Recent work demonstrates that processes of stress release in prestrained elastomeric substrates can guide the assembly of sophisticated 3D micro/nanostructures in advanced materials. Reported application examples include soft electronic components, tunable electromagnetic and optical devices, vibrational metrology platforms, and other unusual technologies, each enabled by uniquely engineered 3D architectures. A significant disadvantage of these systems is that the elastomeric substrates, while essential to the assembly process, can impose significant engineering constraints in terms of operating temperatures and levels of dimensional stability; they also prevent the realization of 3D structures in freestanding forms. Here, we introduce concepts in interfacial photopolymerization, nonlinear mechanics, and physical transfer that bypass these limitations. The results enable 3D mesostructures in fully or partially freestanding forms, with additional capabilities in integration onto nearly any class of substrate, from planar, hard inorganic materials to textured, soft biological tissues, all via mechanisms quantitatively described by theoretical modeling. Illustrations of these ideas include their use in 3D structures as frameworks for templated growth of organized lamellae from AgCl-KCl eutectics and of atomic layers of WSe 2 from vapor-phase precursors, as open-architecture electronic scaffolds for formation of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neural networks, and as catalyst supports for propulsive systems in 3D microswimmers with geometrically controlled dynamics. Because interfaces impede phonon transport of thermal energy, nanostructuring can transform fully dense solids into ultralow thermal conductivity materials. Here we report a simple self-assembly approach to synthesizing organoclay nanolaminates with cross-planar thermal conductivities below 0.10 W m(-1) K(-1)-a 5-fold decrease compared to unmodified clay. These organoclays are produced via alkylammonium cation exchange with colloidally dispersed montmorillonite clay sheets followed by solvent casting. Time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) is used to evaluate the thermal conductivity of the organoclay nanolaminates. Variations in both organic layer thickness and cation chemistry are investigated. At these interface densities (1.0-1.5 interfaces/nm), we demonstrate that thermal conductivity is relatively independent of nanolaminate spacing. A simple series resistance model describes the behavior and gives an interfacial thermal conductance value of ≈150 MW m(-2) K(-1) for the organic/clay interface, consistent with similar organic-inorganic interfaces. The wide range of compositional substitutions and structural variations possible in these materials, make organoclays a versatile new platform for investigating the underlying physics of nanolaminate structures.

We use low-cost hole-mask colloidal nanolithography to manufacture large-area resonant split-ring metamaterials and measure their infrared optical properties. This novel substrate is employed for antenna-assisted surface-enhanced infrared absorption measurements using octadecanethiol (ODT) and deuterated ODT, which demonstrates easy adjustability of our material to vibrational modes. An innovative and versatile nanofabrication technique based on template assisted three-dimensional (3D) nanolithography is presented that takes advantage of the irreversibility of conformal growth and conformal etching at locations with negative surface curvatures in 3D templates. Using colloidal crystals as templates, nanoring particles are generated with quantity much higher than conventional methods. Relying on the same principle, metallodielectric photonic crystals with discrete metal elements are fabricated that show strong absorption in the near-IR and transmission at longer wavelengths.

Gold nanoparticles stabilized by thiol-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ethers with molecular weights ranging from 350 to 2000 have been prepared at thiol-to-gold molar ratios ranging from 3:1 to 1:8. Particle size distributions have been constructed for these particles from transmission electron microscopy images of hundreds of particles for each variation in synthetic conditions. The mean diameters of these particles range from 1.5 to 3.2 nm, with a slight increase in particle size with decreasing thiol content; these particles are smaller than those prepared using alkanethiols at similar thiol-to-gold ratios. Particles prepared under thiol-poor conditions exhibit much greater polydispersity than those prepared under thiol-rich conditions and include numerically rare large-particle outliers that contain much of the gold in the sample. The mean diameters of the gold nanoparticles decrease slightly with increasing polymer weight, especially under thiol-rich conditions. A simple model is developed to predict the trends in nanoparticle diameter that would result were the polymer's steric bulk protecting the nanoparticles from additional growth the principal factor controlling nanoparticle size in this system. This model predicts a much stronger dependence on thiol concentration than has been experimentally observed and a dependence on polymer molecular weight opposite to that experimentally observed. This suggests that the polymers' steric bulk is not the principal reason that these polymers yield smaller nanoparticles than alkanethiols at similar thiol-to-gold ratios. It is instead proposed that polar polymers may yield small nanoparticles by accelerating particle nucleation via coordination between functional groups in the polymer and atomic gold.

Abstract: Water vapor condensation is a ubiquitous process in nature and industry. Over the past century, methods achieving dropwise condensation using a thin (<1 µm) hydrophobic “promoter” layer have been developed, which increases the condensation heat transfer by ten times compared to filmwise condensation. Unfortunately, implementations of dropwise condensation have been limited due to poor durability of the promoter coatings. Here, thin‐film condensation which utilizes a promoter layer not as a condensation surface, but rather to confine the condensate within a porous biphilic nanostructure, nickel inverse opals (NIO) with a thin (<20 nm) hydrophobic top layer of decomposed polyimide is developed. Filmwise condensation confined to thicknesses <10 µm is demonstrated. To test the stability of thin‐film condensation, condensation experiments are performed to show that at higher supersaturations droplets coalescing on top of the hydrophobic layer are absorbed into the superhydrophilic layer through coalescence‐induced transitions. Through detailed thermal‐hydrodynamic modeling, it is shown that thin‐film condensation has the potential to achieve heat transfer coefficients approaching ≈100 kW m−2 while avoiding durability issues by significantly reducing nucleation on the hydrophobic surface. High-resolution, conformable phase masks provide a means to fabricate, in an experimentally simple manner, classes of 3D nanostructures that are technologically important but difficult to generate in other ways. In this approach, light passing through a phase mask that has features of relief comparable in dimension to the wavelength generates a 3D distribution of intensity that exposes a photopolymer film throughout its thickness. Developing this polymer yields a structure in the geometry of the intensity distribution, with feature sizes as small as 50 nm. Rigorous coupled-wave analysis reveals the fundamental aspects of the optics associated with this method; a broad-range 3D nanostructures patterned with it demonstrates its technical capabilities. We present a method to enhance the sensing properties of a localized plasmon sensor. The concept is based on the combination of localized plasmons in nanostructures and a photonic microcavity. Metal nanorods that are placed at Bragg distance above a metal mirror form a Fabry-Pérot microcavity and constitute a coupled photonic-plasmonic system. The localized plasmon resonances of the nanorods and the phase shifts upon plasmon excitation are extremely sensitive to changes in the refractive index of the material surrounding the nanorods. Compared to the plasmonic nanorods alone, the coupled photonic-plasmonic system allows for a much more sensitive detection of small refractive index changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Complexes of anionic DNA and citionic liposomes self-assemble into a multilamellar structure where two-dimensional lipid sheets confine a periodic one-dimensional lattice of parallel. DNA chains, between which Cd2+ ions can condense, and be subsequently reacted with H2S to form CdS nanorods. In this work, we identify the synergistic roles of the anionic and cationic components within the DNA-membrane template; DNA is highly anionic and condenses the Cd2+ ions, while the cationic membrane modulates the concentration of condensed the Cd2+ ions to control the final CdS nanorod dimensions. Due to the strong electrostatic interactions between the DNA sugar-phosphate backbone and the Cd2+ ions, crystal-lographic control of CdS nanostructures is possible using these simple DNA-membrane templates, which we demonstrate using nanobeam electron diffraction experiments on individual templated CdS nanorods. The article reports on the formation of a mesostructured hollow ZnS microsphere through double direct templating. It suggests that the formation process takes place at room temperature, employing a hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystal as a soft template for the mesostructure and a colloidal template for the hollow morphology. It argues that regular controlled pore structure of the shell wall has the possibility for the encapsulation of nanoparticles, polymers, and biological macromolecules. It also reports that small chemical species can diffuse rapidly through the shell wall, while the larger species originally sequestered in the colloidal template remain entrapped.
