Abstract: We report a measurement of the π − photoproduction beam asymmetry for the reaction → γ p → π − Δ + + using data from the GlueX experiment in the photon beam energy range 8.2–8.8 GeV. The asymmetry Σ is measured as a function of four-momentum transfer t to the Δ + + and compared to phenomenological models. We find that Σ varies as a function of t : negative at smaller values and positive at higher values of | t | . The reaction can be described theoretically by t -channel particle exchange requiring pseudoscalar, vector, and tensor intermediaries. In particular, this reaction requires charge exchange, allowing us to probe pion exchange and the significance of higher-order corrections to one-pion exchange at low momentum transfer. Constraining production mechanisms of conventional mesons may aid in the search for and study of unconventional mesons. This is the first measurement of the process at this energy.

Abstract: We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry Σ for the reaction γp→K+Σ0 (1193) using the GlueX spectrometer in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. Data were collected by using a linearly polarized photon beam in the energy range of 8.2–8.8 GeV incident on a liquid hydrogen target. The beam asymmetry Σ was measured as a function of the Mandelstam variable t , and a single value of Σ was extracted for events produced in the u channel. These are the first exclusive measurements of the photon beam asymmetry Σ for the reaction in this energy range. For the t channel, the measured beam asymmetry is close to unity over the t range studied, − t = ( 0.1 – 1.4 ) ( GeV / c ) 2 , with an average value of Σ = 1.00 ± 0.05 . This agrees with theoretical models that describe the reaction via the natural-parity exchange of the K ∗ (892) Regge trajectory. A value of Σ = 0.41 ± 0.09 is obtained for the u channel integrated up to − u = 2.0 ( GeV / c ) 2 .

Abstract: Background: Measurements of exclusive meson production are a useful tool in the study of hadronic structure. In particular, one can discern the relevant degrees of freedom at different distance scales through these studies. Purpose: To study the transition between non-perturbative and perturbative Quantum Chromodyanmics as the square of four momentum transfer to the struck proton, -t, is increased. Method: Cross sections for the $^1$H(e,e'$\pi^+$)n reaction were measured over the -t range of 0.272 to 2.127 GeV$^2$ with limited azimuthal coverage at fixed beam energy of 4.709 GeV, Q$^2$ of 2.4 GeV$^2$ and W of 2.0 GeV at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) Hall C. Results: The -t dependence of the measured $\pi^+$ electroproduction cross section generally agrees with prior data from JLab Halls B and C. The data are consistent with a Regge amplitude based theoretical model, but show poor agreement with a Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) based model. Conclusion: The agreement of cross sections with prior data implies small contribution from the interference terms, and the confirmation of the change in t-slopes between the low and high -t regions previously observed in photoproduction indicates the changing nature of the electroproduction reaction in our kinematic regime., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures Physical Review C, in press

Abstract: The barrel calorimeter is part of the new spectrometer installed in Hall D at Jefferson Lab for the GlueX experiment. The calorimeter was installed in 2013, commissioned in 2014 and has been operating routinely since early 2015. The detector configuration, associated Monte Carlo simulations, calibration and operational performance are described herein. The calorimeter records the time and energy deposited by charged and neutral particles created by a multi-GeV photon beam. It is constructed as a lead and scintillating-fiber calorimeter and read out with 3840 large-area silicon photomultiplier arrays. Particles impinge on the detector over a wide range of angles, from normal incidence at 90 degrees down to 11.5 degrees, which defines a geometry that is fairly unique among calorimeters. The response of the calorimeter has been measured during a running experiment and performs as expected for electromagnetic showers below 2.5 GeV. We characterize the performance of the BCAL using the energy resolution integrated over typical angular distributions for $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ production of $\sigma_E/E$=5.2\%/$\sqrt{E(\rm{GeV})} \oplus$ 3.6\% and a timing resolution of $\sigma$\,=\,150\,ps at 1\,GeV., Comment: 46 pages, 33 figures

Abstract: We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry Σ for the reactions γ - p→pπ0 and γ - p→pη from the GlueX experiment using a 9 GeV linearly polarized, tagged photon beam incident on a liquid hydrogen target in Jefferson Lab's Hall D. The asymmetries, measured as a function of the proton momentum transfer, possess greater precision than previous π0 measurements and are the first η measurements in this energy regime. The results are compared with theoretical predictions based on t-channel, quasiparticle exchange and constrain the axial-vector component of the neutral meson production mechanism in these models.

Abstract: The η → π 0 γγ rare decay was measured at the AGS with the Crystal Ball photon spectrometer and its relative branching ratio was extracted to be B 1 =(8.3±2.8±1.4)×10 −4 , based on the analysis of 3×10 7 detected η mesons. This leads to a lower partial width for this eta channel than past measurements and is in line with chiral perturbation theory calculations.

Abstract: We report a helicity analysis of subthreshold rho production on 2H and 12C nuclei at low photoproduction energies and large |t|. The results are indicative of a large longitudinal rho polarization (l=1, m=0) and are consistent with a strong helicity-flip mechanism of rho production. The analysis is model-independent and supports the large mass shift reported from the earlier 3He experiments.

Abstract: The ratio of the proton's elastic electromagnetic form factors was obtained by measuring the transverse and longitudinal polarizations of recoiling protons from the elastic scattering of polarized electrons with unpolarized protons. The ratio of the electric to magnetic form factor is proportional to the ratio of the transverse to longitudinal recoil polarizations. The ratio was measured over a range of four-momentum transfer squared between 0.5 and 3.5 GeV-squared. Simultaneous measurement of transverse and longitudinal polarizations in a polarimeter provides good control of the systematic uncertainty. The results for the ratio of the proton's electric to magnetic form factors show a systematic decrease with increasing four momentum squared, indicating for the first time a marked difference in the spatial distribution of charge and magnetization currents in the proton.

Abstract: The deuteron elastic structure function A(Q2) has been extracted in the range 0.7≤Q2≤6.0(GeV/c)2 from cross section measurements of elastic electron-deuteron scattering in coincidence using the Hall A Facility of Jefferson Laboratory. The data are compared to theoretical models, based on the impulse approximation with the inclusion of meson-exchange currents, and to predictions of quark dimensional scaling and perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Abstract: The 1 H(e, e′K + )Λ and 1 H(e,e′K + )Σ 0 reactions were studied as a function of the squared four-momentum-transfer, Q 2 , and the virtual photon polarization, e, thus enabling the separation of the longitudinal and transverse parts of the cross section. The existence of a sizable longitudinal component for the 1 H(e,e′K + )Λ reaction seems to be indicated by these data.

Abstract: Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) on the proton has been studied at Jefferson Lab using the exclusive photon electroproduction reaction (e p --> e p gamma). This paper gives a detailed account of the analysis which has led to the determination of the structure functions P{sub LL}-P{sub TT}/epsilon and P{sub LT}, and the electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities (GPs) alpha{sub E}(Q{sup 2}) and beta{sub M}(Q{sup 2}) at values of the four-momentum transfer squared Q{sup 2} = 0.92 and 1.76 GeV{sup 2}. These data, together with the results of VCS experiments at lower momenta, help building a coherent picture of the electric and magnetic GPs of the proton over the full measured Q{sup 2}-range, and point to their non-trivial behavior.

Abstract: Precise measurements of the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio R = mu(p)G(E)(p)/G(M)(p) using the polarization transfer method at Jefferson Lab have revolutionized the understanding of nucleon structure by revealing the strong decrease of R with momentum transfer Q(2) for Q(2) greater than or similar to 1 GeV2, in strong disagreement with previous extractions of R from cross-section measurements. In particular, the polarization transfer results have exposed the limits of applicability of the one-photon-exchange approximation and highlighted the role of quark orbital angular momentum in the nucleon structure. Abstract: Angular distributions of the differential cross sections and analyzing powers have been measured for the [sup 3]He([ital [rvec p]],[pi][sup +]) [sup 4]He and [sup 4]He([ital [rvec p]],[pi][sup +])[sup 5]He reactions at proton bombarding energies between 240 and 507 MeV. These new results provide a comprehensive set of data spanning the region of the [Delta][sub 1232] resonance and are compared with a phenomenological model that incorporates the amplitudes for the [ital pp][r arrow][ital d][pi][sup +] reaction, and with calculations from a microscopic ([ital p],[pi][sup +]) model. A [sup 5]He final state interaction calculation based upon the low energy [ital n]+[alpha] elastic phase shifts indicates that the [sup 4]He([ital p],[pi][sup +])[sup 5]He spectra are nearly independent of pion angle and proton energy. Comparisons made with the time reversed charge symmetric reaction [sup 3]H([ital n],[pi][sup [minus]])[sup 4]He reaction indicate substantial Coulomb effects are still present at 300 MeV.

Abstract: Differential cross sections for K{sup -} radiative capture in flight on the proton, leading to the gammaLAMBDA and gammaSIGMA{sup 0} final states, have been measured at eight K{sup -} momenta between 514 and 750 MeV/c. The data were obtained with the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer installed at the separated K/pi beam line C6 of the BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The results substantially improve the existing experimental data available for studying radiative decays of excited hyperon states. An exploratory theoretical analysis is performed within the Regge-plus-resonance approach. According to this analysis, the gammaSIGMA{sup 0} final state is dominated by hyperon-resonance exchange and hints at an important role for a resonance in the mass region of 1700 MeV. In the gammaLAMBDA final state, in contrast, the resonant contributions account for only half the strength, and the data suggest the importance of a resonance in the mass region of 1550 MeV.

Abstract: We report the first measurements of the total cross section of the reaction K{sup -}p{yields}{sigma}{sup 0}{gamma} at eight beam momenta from 514 to 750 MeV/c. The data were obtained at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory using the Crystal Ball detector consisting of 672 NaI crystals. All charged particles were vetoed by a barrel of plastic scintillators, resulting in a study of only the neutral decays of the {sigma}{sup 0}. The prompt photon and the photons from the decay products of {sigma}{sup 0} were detected for each reconstructed event; the neutron was also detected in a small fraction of the events.

Abstract: We have made the first measurements of the virtual Compton scattering (VCS) process via the H$(e,e'p)\gamma$ exclusive reaction in the nucleon resonance region, at backward angles. Results are presented for the $W$-dependence at fixed $Q^2=1$ GeV$^2$, and for the $Q^2$-dependence at fixed $W$ near 1.5 GeV. The VCS data show resonant structures in the first and second resonance regions. The observed $Q^2$-dependence is smooth. The measured ratio of H$(e,e'p)\gamma$ to H$(e,e'p)\pi^0$ cross sections emphasizes the different sensitivity of these two reactions to the various nucleon resonances. Finally, when compared to Real Compton Scattering (RCS) at high energy and large angles, our VCS data at the highest $W$ (1.8-1.9 GeV) show a striking $Q^2$- independence, which may suggest a transition to a perturbative scattering mechanism at the quark level., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures. Abstract: Cross sections for the reaction {sup 1}H(e,e'{Pi}{sup +})n were measured in Hall C at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) using the high-intensity Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) to determine the charged pion form factor. Data were taken for central four-momentum transfers ranging from Q{sup 2} = 0.60 to 2.45 GeV{sup 2} at an invariant mass of the virtual photon-nucleon system of W = 1.95 and 2.22 GeV. The measured cross sections were separated into the four structure functions {sigma}{sub L},{sigma}{sub T}, {sigma}{sub LT}, and {sigma}{sub TT}. The various parts of the experimental setup and the analysis steps are described in detail, including the calibrations and systematic studies, which were needed to obtain high-precision results. The different types of systematic uncertainties are also discussed. The results for the separated cross sections as a function of the Mandelstam variable t at the different values of Q{sup 2} are presented. Some global features of the data are discussed, and the data are compared with the results of some model calculations for the reaction {sup 1}H(e,e'{Pi}{sup +})n.

Abstract: We measured angular distributions of differential cross section, beam analyzing power, and recoil polarization for neutral pion electroproduction at Q(2)=1.0 (GeV/c)(2) in 10 bins of 1.17 M-Delta. We performed a multipole analysis that adjusts suitable subsets of center dot(pi) Delta quadrupole ratios are not negligible. Parabolic fits to the W dependence around M-Delta for the multiple analysis gives values for Re(S1+/M1+)=(-6.61 +/- 0.18)% and Re(E1+/M1+)=(-2.87 +/- 0.19)% for the p pi(0) channel at W=1.232 GeV and Q(2)=1.0 (GeV/c)(2) that are distinctly larger than those from the Legendre analysis of the same data. Similarly, the multipole analysis gives Re(S0+/M1+)=(+7.1 +/- 0.8)% at W=1.232 GeV, consistent with recent models, while the traditional Legendre analysis gives the opposite sign because its truncation errors are quite severe.

Abstract: The 1H(e,e'pi+)n cross section was measured at four-momentum transfers of Q2=1.60 and 2.45 GeV2 at an invariant mass of the photon nucleon system of W=2.22 GeV. The charged pion form factor (F(pi)) was extracted from the data by comparing the separated longitudinal pion electroproduction cross section to a Regge model prediction in which F(pi) is a free parameter. The results indicate that the pion form factor deviates from the charge-radius constrained monopole form at these values of Q2 by one sigma, but is still far from its perturbative quantum chromodynamics prediction.

Abstract: The recoil proton polarization was measured in the {sup 2}H(e-vector,e{sup '}p-vector)n reaction in Hall A of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The electron kinematics were centered on the quasielastic peak (x{sub Bj}{approx_equal}1) and included three values of the squared four-momentum transfer, Q{sup 2}=0.43,1.00 and 1.61 (GeV/c){sup 2}. For Q{sup 2}=0.43 and 1.61 (GeV/c){sup 2}, the missing momentum, p{sub m}, was centered at zero, whereas for Q{sup 2}=1.00 (GeV/c){sup 2} two values of p{sub m} were chosen: 0 and 174 MeV/c. At low p{sub m}, the Q{sup 2} dependence of the longitudinal polarization, P{sub z}{sup '}, is not well described by a state-of-the-art calculation. Further, at higher p{sub m}, a 3.5{sigma} discrepancy was observed in the transverse polarization, P{sub x}{sup '}. Understanding the origin of these discrepancies is important to confidently extract the neutron electric form factor from the analogous {sup 2}H(e-vector,e{sup '}n-vector)p experiment.

Abstract: We report a new measurement of the differential cross section for {pi}{sup -}p{yields}{pi}{sup 0}n from p{sub {pi}}=649 to 752 MeV/c, which is around the opening of the {eta} channel (685 MeV/c). Our data support the main features of the {pi}{sup -}p charge-exchange differential cross sections generated by the SAID {pi}N partial-wave analysis. The opening of the {eta} channel has a clear effect on the shape of the excitation function for d{sigma}({pi}{sup -}p{yields}{pi}{sup 0}n), which is most noticeable in the backward direction.

Abstract: We measured angular distributions of recoil-polarization response functions for neutral pion electroproduction for W=1.23 GeV at Q^2=1.0 (GeV/c)^2, obtaining 14 separated response functions plus 2 Rosenbluth combinations; of these, 12 have been observed for the first time. Dynamical models do not describe quantities governed by imaginary parts of interference products well, indicating the need for adjusting magnitudes and phases for nonresonant amplitudes. We performed a nearly model-independent multipole analysis and obtained values for Re(S1+/M1+)=-(6.84+/-0.15)% and Re(E1+/M1+)=-(2.91+/-0.19)% that are distinctly different from those from the traditional Legendre analysis based upon M1+ dominance and sp truncation., 5 pages, 2 figures, for PRL

Abstract: The ratio of the proton elastic electromagnetic form factors, GEp/GMp, was obtained by measuring Pt and P, the transverse and longitudinal recoil proton polarization components, respectively, for the elastic epepreaction in the four-momentum transfer squared range of 0.5 to 3.5 GeV2. In the single-photon exchange approximation, GEp/GMp is directly proportional to Pt/P. The simultaneous measurement of Pt and P in a polarimeter reduces systematic uncertainties. The results for GEp/GMp show a systematic decrease with increasing Q2, indicating for the first time a definite difference in the distribution of charge and magnetization in the proton. The data have been reanalyzed and their systematic uncertainties have become significantly smaller than those reported previously. (Less)

Abstract: We report a virtual Compton scattering study of the proton at low c.m. energies. We have determined the structure functions P(LL)-P(TT)/epsilon and P(LT), and the electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities (GPs) alpha(E)(Q2) and beta(M)(Q2) at momentum transfer Q(2)=0.92 and 1.76 GeV2. The electric GP shows a strong falloff with Q2, and its global behavior does not follow a simple dipole form. The magnetic GP shows a rise and then a falloff; this can be interpreted as the dominance of a long-distance diamagnetic pion cloud at low Q2, compensated at higher Q2 by a paramagnetic contribution from piN intermediate states.

Abstract: Exclusive electroproduction of pi{sup 0} mesons on protons in the backward hemisphere has been studied at Q2 = 1.0 GeV2 by detecting protons in the forward direction in coincidence with scattered electrons from the 4 GeV electron beam in Jefferson Lab's Hall A. The data span the range of the total (gamma*p) center-of-mass energy W from the pion production threshold to W = 2.0 GeV. The differential cross sections sigma{sub T} + epsilon sigma{sub L}, sigma{sub TL}, and sigma{sub TT} were separated from the azimuthal distribution and are presented together with the MAID and SAID parameterizations.

Abstract: The instrumentation in Hall A at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility was designed to study electro-and photo-induced reactions at very high luminosity and good momentum and angular resolution for at least one of the reaction products. The central components of Hall A are two identical high resolution spectrometers, which allow the vertical drift chambers in the focal plane to provide a momentum resolution of better than 2 x 10(-4). A variety of Cherenkov counters, scintillators and lead-glass calorimeters provide excellent particle identification. The facility has been operated successfully at a luminosity well in excess of 10(38) CM-2 s(-1). The research program is aimed at a variety of subjects, including nucleon structure functions, nucleon form factors and properties of the nuclear medium. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The first results obtained in 1998 by the Crystal Ball collaboration from a measurement of the total and differential cross sections for the reaction pi(-)p --> etan are presented.These new experimental results for the total cross sections are compared with the predictions of the K-matrix model for pion- nucleon scattering.The angular distribution at momenta near the reaction threshold (685 MeV/c) is determined by the S-wave contribution.The P-wave contribution begins to manifest itself from a momentum of 720 MeV/c.

Abstract: Background: Measurements of forward exclusive meson production at different squared four-momenta of the exchanged virtual photon, $Q^2$, and at different four-momentum transfer, t, can be used to probe QCD's transition from meson-nucleon degrees of freedom at long distances to quark-gluon degrees of freedom at short scales. Ratios of separated response functions in $\pi^-$ and $\pi^+$ electroproduction are particularly informative. The ratio for transverse photons may allow this transition to be more easily observed, while the ratio for longitudinal photons provides a crucial verification of the assumed pole dominance, needed for reliable extraction of the pion form factor from electroproduction data. Method: Data were acquired with 2.6-5.2 GeV electron beams and the HMS+SOS spectrometers in Jefferson Lab Hall C, at central $Q^2$ values of 0.6, 1.0, 1.6 GeV$^2$ at W=1.95 GeV, and $Q^2$=2.45 GeV$^2$ at W=2.22 GeV. There was significant coverage in $\phi$ and $\epsilon$, which allowed separation of $\sigma_{L,T,LT,TT}$. Results: $\sigma_L$ shows a clear signature of the pion pole, with a sharp rise at small -t. In contrast, $\sigma_T$ is much flatter versus t. The longitudinal/transverse ratios evolve with $Q^2$ and t, and at the highest $Q^2$=2.45 GeV$^2$ show a slight enhancement for $\pi^-$ production compared to $\pi^+$. The $\pi^-/\pi^+$ ratio for transverse photons exhibits only a small $Q^2$-dependence, following a nearly universal curve with t, with a steep transition to a value of about 0.25, consistent with s-channel quark knockout. The $\sigma_{TT}/\sigma_T$ ratio also drops rapidly with $Q^2$, qualitatively consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. The $\pi^-/\pi^+$ ratio for longitudinal photons indicates a small isoscalar contamination at W=1.95 GeV, consistent with what was observed in our earlier determination of the pion form factor at these kinematics., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures, 6 tables

Abstract: We present data on the inclusive scattering of polarized electrons from a polarized ^3He target at energies from 0.862 to 5.06 GeV, obtained at a scattering angle of 15.5°. Our data include measurements from the quasielastic peak, through the nucleon resonance region, and beyond, and were used to determine the virtual photon cross-section difference σ_(1/2)-σ_(3/2). We extract the extended Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for the neutron in the range of four-momentum transfer squared Q^2 of 0.1–0.9 GeV^2.

Abstract: Separated longitudinal and transverse structure functions for the reaction 1H(e,eprime pi+)n were measured in the momentum transfer region Q2=0.6-1.6 (GeV/c)**2 at a value of the invariant mass W=1.95 GeV. New values for the pion charge form factor were extracted from the longitudinal cross section by using a recently developed Regge model. Abstract: Differential and total cross sections for π+ absorption on 12C are presented at incident pion energies of 100 and 165 MeV. This is the first time that this reaction has been measured with a combination of good energy and angle information over an extensive region of phase space. Results are compared to extensive Monte Carlo simulations in order to investigate the role of two- and multinucleon absorption processes in this nucleus. Abstract: The angular distributions of the differential cross sections and analyzing powers are presented for the /sup 12/C(p,..pi../sup +/)/sup 13/C( reaction leading to the ground state of /sup 13/C as well as some of the /sup 13/C( low-lying excited states. The analyzing powers for some of the transitions exhibit a considerable energy dependence while for other transitions they remain relatively unchanged, thus indicating a dynamic sensitivity of the analyzing power dependent on nuclear structure. Comparisons of theoretical predictions for A/sub N/0 and dsigma/d..cap omega.., based on microscopic two-nucleon models, with our results indicate that substantial differences between theory and experiment still exist for A(p,..pi../sup +/)A+1 type of reactions.

Abstract: Four telescopes of three (2-ΔE, 1-E) silicon surface barrier detectors each, mounted in the focal plane of a magnetic spectrometer, have been used to detect positive pions in the energy range from 4.7–17.9 MeV and negatice pions from 14.1–17.9 MeV. Positive pions from 4.7–12.7 MeV were stopped in the third detector while positive and negative pions from 14.1–17.9 MeV were detected in transmission. For energies greater than 7.4 MeV aluminum moderators were placed in front of the first detector to degrade the pion energy. Energy spectra show well resolved pion peaks with extremely low background. Double differential cross sections for the 12C(e, π+)12B, e′ reaction have been measured.

Abstract: Angular distributions of the tensor analyzing powers T/sub 20/ and tau/sub 21/ have been measured for ..pi..d elastic scattering, in a single scattering experiment employing a tensor polarized deuteron target. Measurements of T/sub 20/ were obtained for pion bombarding energies of 134, 151, 180, 220, and 256 MeV. Measurements of tau/sub 21/ were obtained for pion bombarding energies of 134, 180, and 220 MeV. The results are compared with three-body calculations where effects relating to pion absorption are seen to play an important role.

Abstract: Measurements of the tensor polarization t/sub 20/ in ..pi../sup +/d elastic scattering have been performed at theta/sub d//sup lab/ = 15/sup 0/ between T/sub ..pi../ = 116 and 145 MeV. Angular distributions at 133 and 140 MeV were also determined. These results resolve the discrepancy that has existed between the measurements made by other groups at SIN and at LAMPF, as our values are negative for all energies and angles investigated and consistent with the LAMPF data. Our results are also in good agreement with the corresponding measurements of analyzing powers. Lack of any significant oscillatory nature is in general agreement with theories at these kinematic regions and does not lend support to exotic effects such as dibaryon resonances.

50. Measurements of cross sections and analyzing powers for the inclusive pp→pnπ+reaction at 400 and 450 MeV

Abstract: Single arm spectrometer measurements of the differential cross sections and analyzing powers of the pp pn reaction have been performed at 400 and 450 MeV incident proton energy. The measurements covering an angular range from 46 to 90 (lab) spanned pion energies corresponding to production of the np system with relative energies between 0 and 30 MeV, a region where the influence of the np final state interaction is particularly important. The trend of the measured analyzing power is very similar to that of the pp d reaction, and is well explained by calculations that use this latter data as input. Dominance of the triplet pn final state is implied by these results.
