A series of neutral ruthenium(ii)-arene complexes, [(arene)Ru(Q R )Cl] (arene = p-cymene or hexamethylbenzene), containing 4-acyl-5-pyrazolonate (Q R ) ligands with aromatic substituents in the acyl moiety (a phenyl in Q Ph and a 1-naphthyl in Q naph ) and related ionic complexes [(arene)Ru(Q R )(PTA)][PF 6 ] (PTA = 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane) have been synthesized and characterized by IR, 1 H, 13 C and 31 P NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and ESI mass spectrometry. The structures of five of these compounds were also determined by X-ray crystallography. DFT studies have been performed on all complexes and, in the case of two cationic [(arene)Ru(Q naph )(PTA)][PF 6 ], the existence of two conformers with a different relative orientation of the naphthyl group in the Q naph ligand has been assessed, showing that they possess similar energies, in agreement with the experimentally observed NMR spectra in solution. The cytotoxicity of the 4-acyl-5-pyrazolonate proligands (HQ R ) and complexes was evaluated in vitro against human ovarian carcinoma cells (A2780 and A2780cisR) and non-tumorous human embryonic kidney (HEK293) cells. In general, each complex is about equally cytotoxic to all three cell lines and the PTA derivatives with the naphthyl-modified Q R ligands are the most active of the series.

Compounds that combine metal-based drugs with covalently linked targeted organic agents have been shown, in some instances, to exhibit superior anticancer properties compared to the individual counterparts. Within this framework, we prepared a series of organometallic ruthenium(II)- and osmium(II)-p-cymene complexes modified with the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) indomethacin and diclofenac. The NSAIDs are attached to the organometallic moieties via monodentate (pyridine/phosphine) or bidentate (bipyridine) ligands, affording piano-stool Ru(II) and Os(II) arene complexes of general formula [M(η(6)-p-cymene)Cl2(N)], where N is a pyridine-based ligand, {2-(2-(1-(4-chlorobenzoyl)-5-methoxy-2-methyl-1H-indol-3-yl)acetoxy)ethyl-3-(pyridin-3-yl)propanoate} or {2-(2-(2-((2,6-dichlorophenyl)amino)phenyl)acetoxy)ethyl-3-(pyridin-3-yl)propanoate}, [M(η(6)-p-cymene)Cl2(P)], where P is a phosphine ligand, {2-(2-(1-(4-chlorobenzoyl)-5-methoxy-2-methyl-1H-indol-3-yl)acetoxy)ethyl-4-(diphenylphosphanyl)benzoate} or {2-(2-(2-((2,6-dichlorophenyl)amino)phenyl)acetoxy)ethyl-4-(diphenylphosphanyl)benzoate, and [M(η(6)-p-cymene)Cl(N,N')][Cl], where N,N' is a bipyridine-based ligand, (4'-methyl-[2,2'-bipyridin]-4-yl)methyl-2-(1-(4-chlorobenzoyl)-5-methoxy-2-methyl-1H-indol-3-yl)acetate), (4'-methyl-[2,2'-bipyridin]-4-yl)methyl-2-(2-((2,6-dichlorophenyl)amino)phenyl)acetate), (bis(2-(2-(1-(4-chlorobenzoyl)-5-methoxy-2-methyl-1H-indol-3-yl)acetoxy)ethyl)[2,2'-bipyridine]-5,5'-dicarboxylate), or (bis(2-(2-(2-((2,6-dichlorophenyl)amino)phenyl)acetoxy)ethyl)[2,2'-bipyridine]-5,5'-dicarboxylate). The antiproliferative properties of the complexes were assessed in human ovarian cancer cells (A2780 and A2780cisR, the latter being resistant to cisplatin) and nontumorigenic human embryonic kidney (HEK-293) cells. Some of the complexes are considerably more cytotoxic than the original drugs and also display significant cancer cell selectivity.

Osmium compounds are attracting increasing attention as potential anticancer drugs. In this context, a series of bifunctional organometallic osmium(II)-p-cymene complexes functionalized with alkyl or perfluoroalkyl groups were prepared and screened for their antiproliferative activity. Three compounds from the series display selectivity toward cancer cells, with moderate cytotoxicity observed against human ovarian carcinoma (A2780) cells, whereas no cytotoxicity was observed on non-cancerous human embryonic kidney (HEK-293) cells and human endothelial (ECRF24) cells. Two of these three cancer-cell-selective compounds induce cell death largely via apoptosis and were also found to disrupt vascularization in the chicken embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) model. We report on new anionic tridentate benzimidazole-pyridine-tetrazolate ligands that form neutral 3:1 complexes with trivalent lanthanides. The ligands are UV-absorbing chromophores that sensitize the red luminescence of europium with energy-transfer efficiency of 74-100%. The lifetime and quantum yield of the sensitized europium luminescence increase from 0.5 ms and 12-13% for the as-prepared solids to 2.8 ms and 41% for dichloromethane solution. From analysis of the data, the as-prepared solids can be described as aqua-complexes [Ln(κ(3)-ligand)2(κ(1)-ligand)(H2O)x] where the coordinated water molecules are responsible for the strong quenching of the europium luminescence. In solution, the coordinated water molecules are replaced by the nitrogen atoms of the κ(1)-ligand to give anhydrous complexes [Ln(κ(3)-ligand)3] that exhibit efficient europium luminescence. X-ray structures of the anhydrous complexes confirm that the lanthanide ion (La(III), Eu(III)) is nine-coordinate in a distorted tricapped trigonal prismatic environment and that coordination of the lanthanide ion by tetrazolate is weaker than by carboxylate.

A ruthenium(II)-arene complex with a perfluoroalkyl-ligand was found to display remarkable selectivity toward cancer cells. IC50 values on several cancer cell lines are in the range of 25-45 μM, and no cytotoxic effect was observed on nontumorigenic (HEK-293) cells at concentrations up to 500 μM (the maximum concentration tested). Consequently, this complex was used as the basis for the development of a number of related derivatives, which were screened in cancerous and noncancerous cell lines. The lead compound was then evaluated in vivo for antiangiogenic activity in the CAM model and in a xenografted ovarian carcinoma tumor (A2780) grown on the CAM. A 90% reduction in the tumor growth was observed.

Two hybrid compounds comprising an antimetastatic ruthenium-arene fragment tethered to an indazole-3-carboxylic acid derivative that inhibits aerobic glycolysis in cancer cells have been prepared and evaluated in a variety of cancer cell lines, including highly relevant human glioblastoma cells, with an apparent synergistic action between the two components observed.

A library of emission spectra of 90 bis-cyclometallated iridium complexes has been obtained using a simple combinatorial approach performed at room temperature. Trends in emission maxima are rationalized using Hammett parameters and invoking inter ligand energy transfer (ILET) processes. The screening approach allowed us to observe trends in the broadness of emission spectra opening the way for a rational approach to the engineering of the emission colour purity at a molecular level. A modular approach for the synthesis of cage structures is described. Reactions of [(arene)RuCl(2)](2) [arene = p-cymene, 1,3,5-C(6)H(3)Me(3), 1,3,5-C(6)H(3)(i-Pr)(3)] with formyl-substituted 3-hydroxy-2-pyridone ligands provide trinuclear metallamacrocycles with pendant aldehyde groups. Subsequent condensation reactions with di- and triamines give molecular cages with 3, 6, or 12 Ru centers in a diastereoselective and chemoselective (self-sorting) fashion. Some of the cages can also be prepared in one-pot reactions by mixing [(arene)RuCl(2)](2) with the pyridone ligand and the amine in the presence of base. The cages were comprehensively analyzed by X-ray crystallography. The diameter of the largest dodecanuclear complex is ∼3 nm; the cavity sizes range from 290 to 740 Å(3). A mixture of the Pd(II) complex [Pd(NO(3))(2)(bipy)] (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine) and the fluorescent dye Methylcalcein blue (MCB) constitutes a chemosensing ensemble which can be used for the detection of pyrophosphate (PPi) by fluorescence spectroscopy. The sensor operates in buffered aqueous solution at neutral pH, and allows sensing PPi at low to mid micromolar concentrations with very good selectivity over other anions such as phosphate, acetate, nitrate, sulfate, chloride, and bicarbonate.

The isomerization dynamics of five labile octahedral Co(II) compounds have been investigated by variable temperature and pressure (1)H and (19)F NMR spectroscopy in dichloromethane solution. The X-ray crystal structure of the two tris-chelates, [Co(HFA)(2)bpic] (1) and [Co(TTFA)(2)bpy] (2), show a distorted octahedral arrangement of the 4 oxygen and 2 nitrogen donor atoms, with bidentate ligand bite angles smaller than 90 degrees. On the other hand, in the three bis-chelates, trans(N)-[Co(HFA)(2)(CH(3)py)(2)](3), cis(N)-cis(CF(3))-trans(S)-[Co(TTFA)(2)(CH(3)py)(2)](4), and trans(N)-trans(CF(3))-[Co(TTFA)(2)(CF(3)py)(2)](5), the replacement of the bidentate nitrogen donor ligands by two monodentate Rpy ligands leads to relaxed structures with almost regular octahedral arrangements of the donor atoms (HFA = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedionato anion; TTFA = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-thienyl)-1,3-butanedionato anion; bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; bpic = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine). In solution the five complexes are stereolabile and all possible isomers are formed: from one for 1 up to five for 4 and 5. All cis-N isomers form pairs of enantiomers, whereas the trans-N isomers are achiral. A solid state structure/isomerization mechanism/rate correlation has been established for the isomerization dynamics of these Co(II) tris- and bis-chelates. The two tris-chelate complexes 1 and 2, with a distorted octahedral solid state structure, show one and three isomers in solution and isomerize/tautomerize very rapidly according to Bailar twist mechanisms. The three bis-chelate complexes 3, 4, and 5, with a close to octahedral symmetry in the solid state, show two, five, and five isomers, respectively. They isomerize/tautomerize 3 orders of magnitude slower as the tris-chelates, by an intramolecular dissociative mechanism involving a ring-opening of an arm of a bidentate ligand to form a TBP intermediate with a dangling bidentate ligand. The results of this first systematic investigation of the isomerization mechanisms of highly labile Co(II) complexes are supported by the NMR observed exchange paths (up to five for complexes for 4 and 5), the variable temperature (185 to 312 K) and pressure (up to 200 MPa) activation parameters, and a detailed analysis of the solid state structures.

An improved synthesis of 2-(2'-benzothiazole)- and 2-(2'-benzoxazole)-8-hydroxyquinoline ligands that combine a tridentate N,N,O-chelating unit for metal binding and extended chromophore for light harvesting is developed. The 2-(2'-benzoxazole)-8-hydroxyquinoline ligands form mononuclear nine-coordinate complexes with neodymium, [Nd(kappa(3)-ligand)(3)], and an eight-coordinate complex with ytterbium, [Yb(kappa(3)-ligand)(2) x (kappa(1)-ligand) x H(2)O], as verified by crystallographic characterization of five complexes with four different ligands. The chemical stability of the complexes increases when the ligand contains 5,7-dihalo-8-hydroxyquinoline versus an 8-hydroxyquinoline group. The complexes feature a ligand-centered visible absorption band with a maximum at 508-527 nm and an intensity of (7.5-9.6) x 10(3) M(-1) x cm(-1). Upon excitation with UV and visible light within ligand absorption transitions, the complexes display characteristic lanthanide luminescence in the near-infrared at 850-1450 nm with quantum yields and lifetimes in the solid state at room temperature as high as 0.33% and 1.88 micros, respectively. The lanthanide luminescence in the complexes is enhanced upon halogenation of the 5,7-positions in the 8-hydroxyquinoline group and upon the addition of electron-donating substituents to the benzoxazole ring. Facile modification of chromophore units in 2-(2'-benzoxazole)-8-hydroxyquinoline ligands provides means for controlling the luminescence properties of their lanthanide complexes.

The reactions of arene-metal complexes (arene=p-cymene, benzene or pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, metal=Ru, Rh or Os), including 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphatricyclo-[3.3.1.1]decanephosphine (pta) and chloro co-ligands, with 9-methylguanine, adenine, and a series of nucleosides were studied in water to ascertain the binding modes. The products were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Tandem mass spectrometry was found to provide excellent information on preferential binding sites. In general, the N7 position on guanine (the most basic site) was found to be the preferred donor atom for coordination to the metal complexes. The X-ray structures of the precursor complexes, [(eta5-C10H15)RhCl(pta-Me)2]Cl2, [(eta6-C10H14)OsCl(pta)2]Cl, and [(eta6-C6H6)OsCl2(CH3CN)], are also reported.

The heterobitopic ligands L(AB4) and L(AB5) have been designed and synthesised with the ultimate aim of self-assembling dual-function lanthanide complexes containing either a magnetic and a luminescent probe or two luminescent probes emitting at different wavelengths. They react with lanthanide ions to form complexes of composition [Ln(2)(L(ABX))(3)](6+) of which three (X = 4; Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm) have been isolated and characterised by means of X-ray diffraction. The unit cells contain triple-stranded helicates in which the three ligand strands are wrapped tightly around the two lanthanide ions. In acetonitrile solution the ligands form not only homobimetallic, but also heterobimetallic complexes of composition [Ln(1)Ln(2)(L(ABX))(3)](6+) when reacted with a pair of different lanthanide ions. The yield of heterobimetallic complexes is analyzed in terms of both the difference in ionic radii of the lanthanide ions and of the inherent tendency of the ligands to form high percentages of head-head-head (HHH) helicates in which all three ligand strands are oriented in the same direction with respect to the Ln-Ln vector. The latter is very sensitive to slight modifications of the tridentate coordinating units.

Diiminodipyrromethane complexes of Ni, Pd, and Pt are able to activate O2, resulting in a metal-dependent autoxidation of the ligand.

Organometallic ruthenium(II) complexes of the general formula [Ru(eta6-p-cymene)Cl2(L)] and [Ru(eta6-p-cymene)Cl(L)2][BPh4] with modified phenoxazine- and anthracene-based multidrug resistance (MDR) modulator ligands (L) have been synthesized, spectroscopically characterized, and evaluated in vitro for their cytotoxic and MDR reverting properties in comparison with the free ligands. For an anthracene-based ligand, coordination to a ruthenium(II) arene fragment led to significant improvement of cytotoxicity as well as Pgp inhibition activity. A similar, but weaker effect was also observed when using a benzimidazole-phenoxazine derivative as Pgp inhibitor. The most active compound in terms of both Pgp inhibition and cytotoxicity is [Ru(eta6-p-cymene)Cl2(L)], where L is an anthracene-based ligand. Studies show that it induces cell death via inhibition of DNA synthesis. Moreover, because the complex is fluorescent, its uptake in cells was studied, and relative to the free anthracene-based ligand, uptake of the complex is accelerated and accumulation of the complex in the cell nucleus is observed.

With a view to develop drugs that could resist hydrolysis in aqueous media, organometallic arene-capped ruthenium(II) 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphatricyclo[3.3.1.1]decane (RAPTA) complexes bearing chelating carboxylate ligands have been prepared and studied. The new complexes, Ru(eta6-cymene)(PTA)(C2O4) (1) and Ru(eta6-cymene)(PTA)(C6H6O4) (2), were found to be highly soluble and kinetically more stable than their RAPTA precursor that contains two chloride ligands in place of the carboxylate ligands. They were also able to resist hydrolysis in water and exhibited significantly lower pKa values. Importantly, they showed a similar order of activity in inhibiting cancer cell-growth proliferation (as determined by in vitro assays) and exhibited oligonucleotide binding characteristics (as evidenced by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry) similar to those of the RAPTA precursor, hence realizing a strategy for developing a new generation of stable and highly water-soluble RAPTA adducts.

Ten complexes of general formula [Ru(eta6-arene)Cl2(L)], [Ru(eta6-arene)Cl(L)2][X], and [Ru(eta6-arene)(L)3][X]2 (eta6-arene = benzene, p-cymene; L = imidazole, benzimidazole, N-methylimidazole, N-butylimidazole, N-vinylimidazole, N-benzoylimidazole; X = Cl, BF4, BPh4) have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopy. The structures of five representative compounds have been established in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All the new compounds were assessed by the same in vitro screening assays applied to [imidazole-H][trans-RuCl4(DMSO)(imidazole)] (NAMI-A) and [Ru(eta6-arene)Cl2(1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane)] (RAPTA) compounds. It was found that the new compounds show essentially the same order of cytotoxicity as the RAPTA compounds toward cancer cells. Several of the compounds were selective toward cancer cells in that they were less (or not) cytotoxic toward nontumorigenic cells that are used to model healthy human cells. Thus, two of the compounds, [Ru(eta6-p-cymene)Cl(vinylimid)2][Cl] (vinylimid = N-vinylimidazole) and [Ru(eta6-benzene)(mimid)3][BF4]2 (mimid = N-methylimidazole), have been selected for a more detailed in vivo evaluation.

The chelate ligand tris[(1-vinylimidazol-2-yl)methyl]amine (5) was synthesized in five steps from commercially available starting materials. Upon reaction with ZnCl2 or CuCl2 in the presence of NH4PF6, the complexes [Zn5Cl]PF6 (6) and [Cu5Cl]PF6 (7) were obtained. The structure of both complexes was determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Immobilization of 6 and 7 was achieved by co-polymerization with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. The supported complexes P6-Zn and P7-Cu were found to be efficient catalysts for the hydrolysis of bis(p-nitrophenyl)phosphate (BNPP) at 50 degrees C. At pH 9.5, the heterogeneous catalyst P7-Cu was 56 times more active than the homogeneous catalyst 7. Partitioning effects, which increase the local concentration of BNPP in the polymer, are shown to contribute to the enhanced activity of the immobilized catalyst.

The crystal structure of a strontium-imidazolium polymeric material obtained from the reaction of zwitterionic 1,3-bis(carboxymethyl)imidazolium with SrCO(3) (2:1) in water is reported. The compound crystallized in the orthorhombic space group Pcc2 with a = 14.545(3) A, b = 8.514(5) A, c = 8.5619(14) A, V = 1060.2(6) A(3), and Z = 2. The macromolecular structure is constructed from 8-coordinate strontium, which binds to six different imidazolium carboxylate molecules. The two-dimensional polymer is separated by water sheets in which the water molecules form near-planar hexagons.

The reaction of half-sandwich complexes of ruthenium, rhodium, and iridium with amino-substituted 3-hydroxy-2-pyridone ligands in aqueous solution gives monomeric O,O'-chelate complexes. Upon addition of base, the complexes assemble to form trimeric metallamacrocycles, as evidenced by NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray analyses. The macrocycles are able to act as highly selective receptors for lithium ions. The binding constants depend on the nature of the half-sandwich complex, the ligand, and the pH. With a commercially available (cymene)Ru complex, a receptor with a Li+ binding constant of K(a) = 5.8 (+/-1.0) x 10(4) M(-1) and a Li+-Na+ selectivity of 10 000:1 can be obtained. The fact that the assembly process of the receptor is pH-dependent can be used to detect the presence of lithium ions by a pH measurement. Furthermore, it is possible to transduce the binding of Li+ into a change of color by means of a chemical reaction with FeCl(3). This allows the detection of Li+ in the pharmacologically relevant concentration range of 0.5-1.5 mM by the "naked eye".

The cryptate [EuII(2.2.2)(H2O)2]2+ displays several interesting features with respect to pO2 responsive MRI contrast agent applications: it is relatively stable against oxidation, it has two inner sphere water molecules, and the water exchange and electron spin relaxation rates are in the optimal range to attain high proton relaxivities, provided the rotation is also optimized.

Organometallic multi-decker sandwich complexes containing f-elements remain rare, despite their attractive magnetic and electronic properties. The reduction of the CeIII siloxide complex, [KCeL4] ( 1; L=OSi(OtBu)3), with excess potassium in a THF/toluene mixture afforded a quadruple-decker arene-bridged complex, [K(2.2.2-crypt)]2[{(KL3Ce)(μ-η6:η6-C7H8)}2Ce] ( 3). The structure of 3 features a [Ce(C7H8)2] sandwich capped by [KL3Ce] moieties with a linear arrangement of the Ce ions. Structural parameters, UV/Vis/NIR data, and DFT studies indicate the presence of CeII ions involved in δ bonding between the Ce cations and toluene dianions. Complex 3 is a rare lanthanide multi-decker complex and the first containing non-classical divalent lanthanide ions. Moreover, oxidation of 1 by AgOTf (OTf=O3SCF3) yielded the CeIV complex, [CeL4] ( 2), showing that siloxide ligands can stabilize Ce in three oxidation states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Organometallic half-sandwich complexes based on ruthenium with aminomethyl-substituted 3-hydroxy-2-pyridone ligands exist in aqueous solution as monomeric O,O′-chelate complexes or trimeric metallamacrocycles depending upon the pH. We hypothesized that administration of the compounds as stable trimers, which subsequently convert to active monomers at the reduced pH of the cancer environment, could facilitate their delivery to cancer cells without undergoing deactivation. Thus, the compounds were evaluated against cancer and fibroblast cell lines in vitro. A series of rhodium complexes, which exist mainly as monomers at neutral pH, were also studied for comparative purposes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A new family of organometallic p-cymene ruthenium(II) and osmium(II) complexes conjugated to ethacrynic acid, a glutathione transferase (GST) inhibitor, is reported. The ethacrynic acid moiety (either one or two) is tethered to the arene ruthenium(II) and osmium(II) fragments via strongly coordinating modified bipyridine ligands. The solid-state structure of one of the complexes, i.e. [Os(η6-p-cymene)Cl][(4'-methyl-[2,2'-bipyridin]-4-yl)methyl-2-(2,3-dichloro-4-(2-methylenebutanoyl)phenoxy)acetate]Cl, was established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, corroborating the expected structure. The complexes are efficient inhibitors of GST P1-1, an enzyme expressed in cancer cells and implicated in drug resistance, and are cytotoxic to the GST-overexpressing chemoresistant A2780cisR ovarian cancer cell line. A series of half-sandwich cyclopentadienyl rhodium(iii) and iridium(iii) complexes of the type [Cp*M(curc/bdcurc)Cl] and [Cp*M(curc/bdcurc)(PTA)][SO3CF3], in which Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, curcH = curcumin and bdcurcH = bisdemethoxycurcumin as O^O-chelating ligands, and PTA = 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane, is described. The X-ray crystal structures of three of the complexes, i.e. [Cp*Rh(curc)(PTA)][SO3CF3] (5), [Cp*Rh(bdcurc)(PTA)][SO3CF3] (6) and [Cp*Ir(bdcurc)(PTA)][SO3CF3] (8), confirm the expected “piano-stool” geometry. With the exception of 5, the complexes are stable under pseudo-physiological conditions and are moderately cytotoxic to human ovarian carcinoma (A2780 and A2780cisR) cells and also to non-tumorigenic human embryonic kidney (HEK293) cells, but lack the cancer cell selectivity observed for related arene ruthenium(ii) complexes. Optically active 2,2′,4,4′,6,6′-hexafluorobiphenyl-3,3′-dicarboxylic acid was obtained through its brucine salt. The half-life time for racemization was determined at various temperatures and the torsional barrier for racemization was calculated to be 25.4 kcal/mol. The water exchange process on [(CO)[sub 3]Re(H[sub 2]O)[sub 3]][sup +] (1) was kinetically investigated by [sup 17]O NMR. The acidity dependence of the observed rate constant kobs was analyzed with a two pathways model in which k[sub ex] (k[sub ex][sup 298] = (6.3 ± 0.1 × 10[sup -3] S[sup -1]) and k[sub OH] (k[sub OH][sup 298] = 27 ± 1 s[sup -1]) denote the water exchange rate constants on 1 and on the monohydroxo species [(CO)[sub 3]Re¹(H[sub 2]O)[sub 2](OH)], respectively. The kinetic contribution of the basic form was proved to be significant only at [H[sup +]] < 3 × 10[sup -3] M. Above this limiting [H[sup +]] concentration, kinetic investigations can be unambiguously conducted on the triaqua cation (1). The variable temperature study has led to the determination of the activation parameters ΔH[sup ‡][sub ex] = 90 ± 3 kJ mol[sup -1], ΔS[sup ‡][sub ex] = +14 ± 10 J K [sup -1] mol[sup -l], the latter being indicative of a dissociative activation mode for the water exchange process. To support this assumption, water substitution reaction on 1 has been followed by [sup 17]O/¹H/[sup 13]C/[sup 19]F NMR with ligands of various nucleophilicities (TFA, Br[sup -], CH[sub 3]CN, Hbipy[sup +], Hphen[sup +], DMS, TU). With unidentate ligands, except Br[sup -], the mono-, bi-, and tricomplexes were formed by water substitution. With bidentate ligands, bipy and phen, the chelate complexes [(CO)[sub 3]Re(H[sub 2]O)(bipy)]CF[sub 3]SO[sub 3] (2) and [(CO)[sub 3]Re(H[sub 2]O)(phen)](NO[sub 3])[sub 0.5](CF[sub 3]SO[sub 3])[sub 0.5]·H[sub 2]O (3) were isolated and X-ray characterized. For each ligand, the calculated interchange rate constants K[sub i] (2.9 × 10[sup -3] (TFA) < K[sub 1] < 41.5 × 10[sup -3] (TU) s[sup -1]) were found in the same order as the water exchange rate constant k[sub ex], the S-donor ligands being slightly more reactive.
