Alveolar ridge resorption following tooth extraction often renders a lateral bone augmentation inevitable. Some patients, however, suffer from severe early (during graft healing, EPatients who underwent a guided bone regeneration (GBR) were screened for inclusion according to the following criteria: (1) a relatively symmetrical maxillary arch, (2) an intact contra-lateral alveolar bone dimension, (3) the presence of a pre-operative cone-beam CT (CBCT), (4) a CBCT taken immediately after GBR, and (5) at least one CBCT scan ≥6 months after surgery. CBCT scans from different timepoints were registered and imported into Mimics software (Materialise, Leuven, Belgium). Bone dimensions of the contra-lateral site of the augmentation, representing the "individual phenotypical dimension of the alveolar crest" (IPD) were super-imposed on the augmented site and registered accordingly. As such, EA total of 17 patients (23 augmented sites) were included. After EWithin the limitations of this study the results indicate that the dimensions of a lateral bone augmentation are defined by the "individual phenotypic bone boundaries" of the patient. The objective of this review was to assess the accuracy of available means of determining the BBT (buccal bone thickness) and/or BBL (buccal bone level). This was translated into the following research question: What is the accuracy of the available means of visualizing the BBP (buccal bone plate) to establish the BBT and/or the BBL, when compared to control measurements? As control measurements histomorphometric measurements, direct measurements and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) measurements in the absence of metal are accepted.METHODS: The literary search was performed by searching the databases of MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science, up to July 13, 2021. Types of studies included were clinical, in vitro and animal trials, specifically looking into the bone level and/or bone thickness of the buccal bone plate at oral implants. Reference lists were hand searched for relevant articles. Two reviewers performed the data extraction and analysis. Only studies using reliable control measurements to evaluate the accuracy of the tested means of visualizing BBT and/or BBL were included for analysis. The QUADAS-2 tool was used to perform bias analysis on the relevant studies. Extracted data was tabulated to show the differences between test and control measurements for BBT and BBL. For in vitro studies on CBCT measurements of BBT meta-analysis could be performed.A total of 1176 papers were identified in the search. Twenty-two articles were used for data extraction and qualitative analysis. Of these studies nine were animal studies, 9 were in vitro studies and four were human studies. Six animal studies and three human studies provided data on probing. CBCT and sonography as techniques for visualizing the buccal bone plate. Probing at implant sites seems to provide data that correlates with a consistent distance from the BBP. Meta-analysis for probing studies could not be performed due to heterogeneity in the setups of these studies. Eleven studies on CBCT were eligible for inclusion. Of these three were animal studies, the remaining 8 studies were all in vitro studies. Meta-analysis was performed on the accuracy of CBCT for in vitro studies, finding a significant underestimation of the BBT when compared to control measurements by a mean difference of -0.15 mm with 95%CI [-0.26,-0.03]. Three studies were identified on measurement of BBT and/or BBL by sonography. This included one human study and two in vitro studies. The identified studies show a low error when determining the buccal bone level or thickness using sonography. All included studies possess a high risk of bias according to risk of bias analysis, mostly due to selection of the patient.A strong limitation of this systematic review is the inclusion of different studies with heterogeneous designs. Within the limits of this analysis it cannot be concluded that probing is an accurate way of visualizing the BBP. CBCT cannot yet be recommended as a standard diagnostic tool for follow-up of the BBP at oral implants. The application of sonography as a diagnostic tool to visualize the BBP needs further scientific validation.

OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND: Little is known about structural and mechanical properties of leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) membranes and even less about the influence of antithrombotic drugs on L-PRF. The aim of this in vitro study is therefore to investigate mechanical properties, fibrin structure and cell content of L-PRF membranes and the impact of anticoagulant therapy on L-PRF. METHODS: Blood samples were obtained from 12 volunteers and supplemented with either no, 1.25 IU, 2.5 IU, 5 IU, or 10 IU enoxaparin. L-PRF membranes were characterized with tensile testing, scanning electron microscopy, and measurement of platelets and leukocytes. Control and enoxaparin-supplemented L-PRF membranes were compared. RESULTS: At 10 IU enoxaparin, no L-PRF membranes could be generated, whereas the low doses of 1.25 and 2.5 IU had no influence on L-PRF properties. The mechanical properties, fibrin networks, and number of platelets and leukocytes of 5 IU supplemented membranes were unlike the control membranes, but were not found to be significantly different because of limited sampling and inter- and intra-variability. AIM: The aim of this retrospective radiographic study in Flemish children was to examine the bone level and bone loss around deciduous molars and factors influencing this. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two thousand eight hundred ninety six digital intra-oral radiographs of children younger than 18 years old were screened for eligibility. The distance from the cementoenamel junction to the alveolar bone crest was measured, and tooth surfaces were screened for local risk factors that are presumably related to changes in the bone level. A distance >2 mm was defined as bone loss based on previous literature. All measurements were performed by two examiners. RESULTS: One thousand four hundred ninety one radiographs of 796 patients (mean age 6.46 ± 2.38 years) were included. The distance between the cementoenamel junction and the alveolar bone crest ranged from 0.07 to 2.88 mm, and the mean distance was 0.93 ± 0.37 mm. This distance was positively correlated with age (p

The aim of this study was to examine the potential influence of antithrombotics on leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) membranes.Tensile tests and cell counts were performed with L-PRF membranes originating from patients on anticoagulants and antiplatelets versus patients not taking antithrombotics.For the tensile tests, 13 control patients, 12 on anticoagulants, and 10 on antiplatelets donated blood. Compared to controls, membranes from anticoagulated donors were weaker (strength 0.57 ± 0.24 MPa vs. 0.80 ± 0.27 MPa, p = .03) and could not be stretched as far (1.8 ± 0.3 vs. 2.1 ± 0.3 times the initial length, p = .01). For the cell counting, 23 control patients, 16 on anticoagulants, and 16 on antiplatelets donated blood. The percentage of platelets was ±50% in the three groups. The percentage of leukocytes was lower in the anticoagulant group compared with controls (69 ± 10% vs. 78 ± 8%, p = .04). However, because of the unknown error of method, it is questionable whether the statistical significance is meaningful. There was no difference between membranes from the control group and the group on antiplatelets.Our results indicate that L-PRF membranes originating from patients on anticoagulants are weaker, stretch less far, and contain less leukocytes than L-PRF membranes of patients not taking these drugs.

The aim of the present study was to compare leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) membranes with a connective tissue graft (CTG) in combination with a coronally advanced flap (CAF) in the treatment of Miller Class I or II localized gingival recessions. A randomized controlled clinical trial with 17 recessions in each group was initiated; the control group received treatment with CAF+CTG, and the test group received CAF+L-PRF. The following variables were measured before treatment and after 1, 3, and 6 months: gingival recession depth (RD), gingival recession width (RW), gingival thickness (GT), probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and keratinized tissue height (KTH). Also, the root coverage percentage (RC), the pain score, postoperative complications, and the root coverage esthetic score (RES) were recorded after surgery. Both treatments presented significant improvements in the RD, RW, and CAL at 1, 3, and 6 months. CTG achieved a significantly higher RC at 1, 3, and 6 months and a significantly higher RES score at 6 months. L-PRF presented a significantly lower pain score and less postoperative complications. Both strategies were effective for the treatment of localized gingival recessions. The CTG obtained higher RC and esthetic results, and L-PRF had less pain and postsurgical complications.

Aim The aim of the study was to evaluate whether the use of a xenograft is not inferior to the use of xenograft and autogenous bone chips in treating dehiscences at implant placement. Materials and methods After implant placement, leaving a dehiscence, control sites were treated using a composite graft (autogenous bone chips and xenograft) and at the test sites 100% xenograft was used. Both sites were covered with a resorbable collagen membrane. Dehiscences were measured clinically at implant placement and at re-entry. CBCT was taken immediately after implant placement and after 4 months. Results In total, 28 GBR procedures were performed in 14 patients. On average, the change in vertical defect height was 2.07 mm (46.7%-test group) and 2.28 mm (50.9%-control group) (p > .05). The horizontal defect width at the implant shoulder change on average 1.85 mm (40.5%-test group) and 1.75 mm (40.9%-control group) (p > .05). On average, a loss in augmentation thickness of 0.45 mm (68.9%-test group) and 0.64 mm (55.5% control group) between implant placement and augmentation and abutment surgery was obtained at the implant shoulder. Conclusion Both treatment modalities seem to work to a certain extent. At implant shoulder level, the augmentation thickness seems to be disappeared after the healing phase. (NCT03946020).

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), a second-generation platelet concentrate, has been the focus of intensive research endeavors over the past 2 decades. Over the years, however, numerous reports have inaccurately reported relative centrifugal force (RCF) values, which has caused considerable confusion in the field. Furthermore, the use of trade names such as leukocyte and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) and advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) has further confused many readers, since studies have not always used centrifugation parameters with equal rotor sizes, angulation of tubes, and/or tube design. This has led to considerable misperception in the report of relative centrifugal force. Herein is described necessary parameters pivotal for the future report of RCF in studies related to PRF, which include: 1) dimensions of the rotor (radius at the clot and end of the tube); 2) rotor angulation for the tube holder; 3) revolutions per minute (RPM) and time; 4) RCF value calculated at either the RCF-minimum, RCF-clot, or RCF-maximum; 5) composition and size of tubes used to produce PRF; and 6) centrifugation model used. This editorial aims to minimize confusion in the field and create more transparent research reporting RCF values in future studies.

AIM: To evaluate dimensional changes in the alveolar ridge and bone structure after tooth extraction when L-PRF or A-PRF+ was used in comparison to unassisted socket healing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients in need of at least three tooth extractions in the aesthetic zone were included. L-PRF, A-PRF+ or control was randomly assigned, leaving one empty socket/edentulous site between conditions. CBCT scans were obtained immediately after tooth extraction and after 3 months of healing. Horizontal and vertical dimensional changes of the ridge and socket fill were calculated. Histological and micro-CT analysis of bone biopsies were used to evaluate post-surgical bone structural healing. RESULTS: Mean horizontal and vertical changes at 1-mm below the crest (buccal and palatal side) were similar for the three sites (p > 0.05). For the socket fill, L-PRF (85.2%) and A-PRF+ (83.8%) showed superior values than the control (67.9%). The histological and radiological analysis reported more newly formed bone for the PRF groups, without any significant differences between both. CONCLUSIONS: PRF matrices failed to reduce the dimensional changes after multiple tooth extractions in the premaxilla. After 3-month healing, both PRF matrices showed radiographically a significant superiority for the socket fill. BACKGROUND: This study aims to evaluate the use of the leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) membranes in increasing the width of the keratinized mucosa (KM) around implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eight patients in need for bilateral widening of the KM around implants in the lower jaw were recruited for a spit-mouth randomized controlled trial. At the control site, a free gingival graft (FGG) was used, whereas at the other side (test), L-PRF membranes were applied. The primary outcome was the increase in width of KM around the implants. As secondary outcomes, the postoperative pain and surgical time were assessed. The follow-up period was 6 weeks. Background and Objective Little is known about the initiation of dysbiosis in oral biofilms, a topic of prime importance for understanding the etiology of, and preventing, periodontitis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of crevicular and salivary peroxidase and catalase on dysbiosis in multispecies biofilms in vitro. Material and Methods The spotting technique was used to identify the effect of different concentrations of myeloperoxidase, lactoperoxidase, erythrocyte catalase, and horseradish peroxidase in salivary and crevicular fluid on the inhibitory effect of commensals on pathobiont growth. Vitality–quantitative real-time PCR was performed to quantify the dysbiotic effect of the peroxidases (adjusted to concentrations found in periodontal health, gingivitis, and periodontitis) on multispecies microbial communities. Results Agar plate and multispecies ecology experiments showed that production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by commensal bacteria decreases pathobiont growth and colonization. Peroxidases at concentrations found in crevicular fluid and saliva neutralized this inhibitory effect. In multispecies communities, myeloperoxidase, at the crevicular fluid concentrations found in periodontitis, resulted in a 1-3 Log increase in pathobionts when compared with the crevicular fluid concentrations found in periodontal health. The effect of salivary lactoperoxidase and salivary myeloperoxidase concentrations was, in general, similar to the effect of crevicular myeloperoxidase concentrations. Conclusions Commensal species suppress pathobionts by producing H2O2. Catalase and peroxidases, at clinically relevant concentrations, can neutralize this effect and thereby can contribute to dysbiosis by allowing the outgrowth of pathobionts.

Background and Aims: The scope of this working group was to review (1) ecological interactions at the dental biofilm in health and disease, (2) the role of microbial communities in the pathogenesis of periodontitis and caries, and (3) the innate host response in caries and periodontal diseases. Results and Conclusions: A health-associated biofilm includes genera such as Neisseria, Streptococcus, Actinomyces, Veillonella and Granulicatella. Microorganisms associated with both caries and periodontal diseases are metabolically highly specialized and organized as multispecies microbial biofilms. Progression of these diseases involves multiple microbial interactions driven by different stressors. In caries, the exposure of dental biofilms to dietary sugars and their fermentation to organic acids results in increasing proportions of acidogenic and aciduric species. In gingivitis, plaque accumulation at the gingival margin leads to inflammation and increasing proportions of proteolytic and often obligately anaerobic species. The natural mucosal barriers and saliva are the main innate defence mechanisms against soft tissue bacterial invasion. Similarly, enamel and dentin are important hard tissue barriers to the caries process. Given that the present state of knowledge suggests that the aetiologies of caries and periodontal diseases are mutually independent, the elements of innate immunity that appear to contribute to resistance to both are somewhat coincidental.

Aim To analyse the effect of Leucocyte- and Platelet Rich Fibrin (L-PRF) on bone regeneration procedures and osseointegration. Materials and Methods An electronic and hand search was conducted in three databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane). Only randomised clinical trials, written in English where L-PRF was applied in bone regeneration and implant procedures, were selected. No follow-up restrictions were applied. Results A total of 14 articles were included and processed. Three subgroups were created depending on the application: sinus floor elevation (SFE), alveolar ridge preservation, and implant therapy. In SFE, for a lateral window as well as for the trans-alveolar technique, histologically faster bone healing was reported when L-PRF was added to most common xenografts. L-PRF alone improved the preservation of the alveolar width, resulting in less buccal bone resorption compared to natural healing. In implant therapy, better implant stability over time and less marginal bone loss were observed when L-PRF was applied. Meta-analyses could not be performed due to the heterogeneity of the data. Conclusions Despite the lack of strong evidence found in this systematic review, L-PRF might have a positive effect on bone regeneration and osseointegration. This article is protected by copyright. AIM: To examine the adjunctive effect of a Lactobacillus reuteri probiotic (ATCC PTA 5289 & DSM 17938) on the re-instrumentation of residual pockets. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study included 39 previously non-surgically treated periodontitis patients. A re-instrumentation was carried out, and probiotic and/or placebo drops were applied according to the study protocoll. Patients afterwards received lozenges to use 2×/day for 12 weeks. Probing pocket depth (PPD), recession, bleeding on probing and plaque levels were analysed, next to the microbiological impact. RESULTS: No effects of the probiotic drops could be found. However, after 24 weeks, the overall PPD in the probiotic lozenges group (2.64 ± 0.33 mm) was significantly lower compared to the control lozenges (2.92 ± 0.42 mm). This difference was even more pronounced in moderate (4-6 mm) and deep (≥7 mm) pockets. In the probiotic lozenges group, there were also significantly more pockets converting from ≥4 mm at baseline to ≤3 mm at 24 weeks (67 ± 18% versus 54 ± 17%) and less sites in need for surgery (4 ± 4% versus 8 ± 6%). However, the probiotic products did not influence the microbiological counts of the periodontopathogens. Peri-implantitis can be explained using a multicausality model. Many factors are involved in the etiology of peri-implantitis, but patient compliance also plays a key role. Oral hygiene, attending recall visits, smoking behavior, and therapy comprehension are relevant factors that contribute to peri-implant health. The clinician should create the most optimal conditions for patients to facilitate adequate oral self-care and to help patients improve their oral hygiene skills. Implementation of a supportive periodontal therapy program is mandatory to control inflammation and plaque accumulation, as well as to keep the incidence of peri-implant diseases low. Patient compliance, including plaque control and dental follow-up, must be optimal. Aim To analyse the regenerative potential of leucocyte‐ and platelet‐rich fibrin (L‐PRF) during periodontal surgery. Materials and Methods An electronic and hand search were conducted in three databases. Only randomized clinical trials were selected and no follow‐up limitation was applied. Pocket depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), bone fill, keratinized tissue width (KTW), recession reduction and root coverage (%) were considered as outcome. When possible, meta‐analysis was performed. Results Twenty‐four articles fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Three subgroups were created: intra‐bony defects (IBDs), furcation defects and periodontal plastic surgery. Meta‐analysis was performed in all the subgroups. Significant PD reduction (1.1 ± 0.5 mm, p 0.05), CAL gain (0.2 ± 0.5 mm, p > 0.05), KTW (0.3 ± 0.4 mm, p > 0.05) and recession reduction (0.2 ± 0.3 mm, p > 0.05). Conclusions L‐PRF enhances periodontal wound healing.

AIM: To examine an organoleptic scoring method (OLS) whereby the sample is collected by negative pressure in a syringe and is subsequently smelled and rated away from the patient. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data of 476 patients visiting a specialized halitosis clinic in Leuven (Belgium) were reviewed retrospectively. Organoleptic (with the classic and with the negative-pressure method) and instrumental (with the Halimeter® and OralChroma™ ) ratings of breath odour were retrieved from patient files together with the final diagnosis. The correlations between the different methods were examined (Spearman correlation coefficient) as well as the positive (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV), sensitivity and specificity of all methods. RESULTS: Both methods of OLS correlated similarly with the instrumental measurements (Halimeter® and OralChroma™ ). Analysis of PPV, NPV, sensitivity and specificity of both methods of examination showed that the negative-pressure method performed best. AIM: To compare the clinical and microbiological performance of minimally and moderately rough implants in patients with a history of severe periodontitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-eight minimally (Turned surface [Tur]) and moderately (TiUnite surface [TiU]) rough implants were placed in eighteen patients according to a split-mouth protocol. Marginal bone loss, probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and bleeding on probing (BoP) were recorded, and microbial samples were analysed by means of quantitative PCR. RESULTS: The amount of bone loss over the 5-year period tended to be lower along Tur when compared with that of TiU surfaces (1.0 versus 1.7 mm, p = .06). Although the clinical outcomes tended to be better for Tur surfaces, there were no significant differences between both surfaces in mean PPD (Tur: 3.1 versus TiU: 4.2 mm, p = .09) or CAL (Tur: 0.5 versus TiU: 1.7 mm, p = .06). More bone loss and deeper pockets were recorded for partially than for fully edentulous patients. The cumulative survival rate at 5-year follow-up was 95.8% for Tur, and 100% for TiU surface implants. No significant differences were found between the surfaces in counts for key pathogens. AIM: To evaluate the impact of two non-surgical periodontal treatment modalities on metabolic and periodontal clinical parameters in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and poor glycaemic control and chronic periodontitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted. Ninety-three T2DM subjects with glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) > 7% were randomly assigned to one of two groups receiving scaling with root planing in multiple sessions quadrant-by-quadrant (Q by Q) or within 24 hr (one stage). Periodontal parameters, HbA1c, glycaemia blood levels (FPG) and C-reactive protein (CRP) values were assessed at baseline and at 3 and 6 months post-therapy. RESULTS: At 6 months, HbA1c had decreased by 0.48% in the Q by Q group and by 0.18% in the one-stage group (p = 0.455). After therapy, subjects with an initial HbA1c 9% regardless of treatment modality. Objective To examine the effect of tongue cleaning with a tongue scraper (TS) or toothbrush (TB) in patients with periodontitis. Background The tongue is a possible reservoir for bacterial (re)colonization of the periodontal tissues in patients with periodontitis. To date, it is not known what the influence of tongue cleaning is on the tongue coating of patients with periodontitis. Material and Methods Eighteen systemically healthy, untreated moderate to severe adult patients with periodontitis with some degree of tongue coating were randomly assigned to the use of a TS or TB for cleaning the tongue. Microbial load of the saliva and tongue dorsum, amount of tongue coating and patient perception about tongue cleaning were studied at baseline and 2 weeks later. Results Two weeks of tongue cleaning with either a TB or a TS, did not influence the microbiological counts, neither in the saliva, nor in the tongue coating, even though tongue coating was significantly less. The patients themselves experienced no differences in breath odour or taste sensation after 2 weeks of tongue cleaning; however, they felt that their tongue was cleaner at the end of the study compared to baseline. No differences could be detected between the uses of a TS vs a TB. Conclusion In patients with periodontitis, tongue cleaning does not influence the bacterial load in the saliva or on the tongue dorsum.

Aim The objective of this proof-of-concept study was to investigate the effects of a new guided bone regeneration technique with a tissue engineering approach. Materials and methods This single cohort observational study evaluated the outcome of the leucocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) Block for horizontal bone augmentation in the maxilla. The L-PRF Block is prepared by mixing a particulated biomaterial with chopped L-PRF membranes at a 50:50 ratio and adding liquid fibrinogen to glue all together. Horizontal augmentation was assessed linearly and volumetrically immediately after surgery and 5-8 months later by matching consecutive cone beam computed tomography (CBCTs). Results Ten patients (mean age of 50.7 years [±17.2]) representing 15 sites with horizontal alveolar deficiencies were included. Superimposition of pre-operative and posthealing CBCT scans showed an average linear horizontal bone gain of 4.6 mm (±2.3), 5.3 mm (±1.2) and 4.4 mm (±2.3), measured at 2, 6 and 10 mm from the alveolar crest, respectively. The volumetric gain was 1.05 cm3 (±0.7) on average. The resorption rate after 5-8 months was 15.6% (±6.7) on average. Conclusions L-PRF Block may be a suitable technique to augment deficient alveolar ridges.

Background and Objective: To the best of our knowledge, the healing time for toothbrush-induced gingival abrasions in humans has not yet been explored. The aim of this study was to evaluate the time needed to heal for toothbrush-induced abrasions of the keratinized mucosa of the palate. Material and Methods: In patients without, with mild periodontitis or with periodontitis, gingival abrasion lesions were induced at the keratinized mucosa of the palate by brushing up to 2 minutes. Healing as observed clinically was followed via calibrated digital photographs of the lesion after staining, every 24 hours until the lesion had resolved. In patients without or with only mild periodontitis, the healing time of lesions caused by 30 seconds and 1 minute of brushing was also recorded. Results: Thirty-one participants (11 without or with mild periodontitis, 20 with periodontitis) met the inclusion criteria. In patients without or with mild periodontitis, the lesions induced by brushing for 2 minutes diminished by 48.7% of their original surface area within 24 hours. In patients with periodontitis the respective outcome was 45.4% (P =.87). Abrasions caused by 2 minutes of brushing needed more than 24 hours to heal completely. When decreasing the time exposed to trauma, fewer lesions were visible at baseline and the time needed to heal decreased. The subgroup of smokers was too small to evaluate any effect. Conclusion: The longer the exposure time of the keratinized mucosa of the palate to trauma, the more lesions were visible, the larger the abrasions were and the more time they needed to heal completely. More studies are needed to investigate the role of smoking, gingival biotype and to link these findings with gingival recessions.

A classification for peri-implant diseases and conditions was presented. Focused questions on the characteristics of peri-implant health, peri-implant mucositis, peri-implantitis, and soft- and hard-tissue deficiencies were addressed. Peri-implant health is characterized by the absence of erythema, bleeding on probing, swelling, and suppuration. It is not possible to define a range of probing depths compatible with health; Peri-implant health can exist around implants with reduced bone support. The main clinical characteristic of peri-implant mucositis is bleeding on gentle probing. Erythema, swelling, and/or suppuration may also be present. An increase in probing depth is often observed in the presence of peri-implant mucositis due to swelling or decrease in probing resistance. There is strong evidence from animal and human experimental studies that plaque is the etiological factor for peri-implant mucositis. Peri-implantitis is a plaque-associated pathological condition occurring in tissues around dental implants, characterized by inflammation in the peri-implant mucosa and subsequent progressive loss of supporting bone. Peri-implantitis sites exhibit clinical signs of inflammation, bleeding on probing, and/or suppuration, increased probing depths and/or recession of the mucosal margin in addition to radiographic bone loss. The evidence is equivocal regarding the effect of keratinized mucosa on the long-term health of the peri-implant tissue. It appears, however, that keratinized mucosa may have advantages regarding patient comfort and ease of plaque removal. Case definitions in day-to-day clinical practice and in epidemiological or disease-surveillance studies for peri-implant health, peri-implant mucositis, and peri-implantitis were introduced. The proposed case definitions should be viewed within the context that there is no generic implant and that there are numerous implant designs with different surface characteristics, surgical and loading protocols. PubMedID: 26427036 Aim To evaluate the adjunctive effects of a Streptococcus oralis KJ3, Streptococcus uberis KJ2 and Streptococcus rattus JH145 containing probiotic tablet after scaling and root planing (SRP). Materials and Methods Forty-eight periodontitis patients were included in this double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. After root planing, patients used either a placebo or a probiotic tablet twice a day for 12 weeks. The pocket probing depth (primary outcome measure), bleeding on probing and relative attachment levels were measured at baseline, 12 and 24 weeks. At baseline, 4, 8, 12 and 24 weeks, microbiological sampling was performed and plaque and gingival indices were recorded. Results The primary and secondary outcome measures were significantly (p < 0.05) improved at the 12- and the 24-week evaluation in both groups. However, no significant inter-group differences could be detected at any time point, except from the % of sites with plaque that were significantly lower in the probiotic group than in the control group at the 24-week evaluation. In addition, at the 12-week time point, the salivary Prevotella intermedia counts were significantly lower in the probiotic group. Conclusions No differences were detected when comparing the adjunctive use of a placebo or the investigated streptococci containing probiotic tablet after SRP. BACKGROUND: A broader understanding of the immune inflammatory profile of peri-implant diseases could be helpful in the development of host-targeted preventive and therapeutic strategies. The aim of this study is to answer two clinical questions: 1) whether patients with peri-implantitis (PP) present higher prevalence of any specific inflammatory cytokine in peri-implant crevicular fluid (PICF) compared with healthy patients; and 2) whether local inflammation measured in PICF can be used as a predictor for incipient PP. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature on the most common cytokines released in PICF in healthy and PP-affected sites was conducted from 1996 up to and including October 2013 using predefined search strategies. Cross-sectional and prospective longitudinal studies were considered. Meta-analyses were done separately for healthy, mucositis (MU), and PP outcomes. RESULTS: Interleukin (IL)-1β was the most studied cytokine (n = 12), followed by tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α (n = 10). Other cytokines were also linked to PP, such as IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, and IL-17. Statistical differences were revealed when IL-1β release was compared between healthy implant sites and PP (P = 0.001) or MU sites (P = 0.002), respectively; when PP and MU were compared, no statistical differences could be detected (P = 0.80). For TNF-α release, significant differences were found between healthy and PP implants (P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: PICF containing inflammatory mediators, such as IL-1β and TNF-α, can be used as additional criteria for a more robust diagnosis of peri-implant infection. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The scope of this working group was to review: (1) the effect of professional mechanical plaque removal (PMPR) on secondary prevention of periodontitis; (2) the occurrence of gingival recessions and non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL) secondary to traumatic tooth brushing; (3) the management of hypersensitivity, through professionally and self administered agents and (4) the management of oral malodour, through mechanical and/or chemical agents. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Patients undergoing supportive periodontal therapy including PMPR showed mean tooth loss rates of 0.15 ± 0.14 teeth/year for 5-year follow-up and 0.09 ± 0.08 teeth/year (corresponding to a mean number of teeth lost ranging between 1.1 and 1.3) for 12-14 year follow-up. There is no direct evidence to confirm tooth brushing as the sole factor causing gingival recession or NCCLs. Similarly, there is no conclusive evidence from intervention studies regarding the impact of manual versus powered toothbrushes on development of gingival recession or NCCLs, or on the treatment of gingival recessions. Local and patient-related factors can be highly relevant in the development and progression of these lesions. Subgingival debridement is the part of nonsurgical therapy which aims to remove the biofilm without intentionally removing the cementum or subgingival calculus. The objective of this review was to describe the end point of this therapy, the different methods used and how often it should be carried out. The literature shows that several methods are currently available for subgingival debridement, namely hand instrumentation, (ultra)sonic instrumentation, laser, photodynamic therapy and air-polishing. None of these methods seems superior to any other regarding clinical benefits or microbiological differences. However, less treatment discomfort is reported using laser, photodynamic therapy or air-polishing compared with hand- and/or (ultra)sonic instrumentation. Background: Only recently the concept of prebiotics has been introduced in oral health. Few potential oral prebiotics have already been identified in dual species competition assays, showing a stimulatory effect on beneficial bacteria and by this suppressing the outgrowth of pathogenic species. This study aimed to validate the effect of previously identified potential prebiotic substrates on multispecies cultures by shifting the biofilm composition towards a more beneficial species dominated microbiota. Methods: A chemostat culture containing 14 model oral bacterial species was used to grow biofilms for 24 hours which subsequently were treated with prebiotic solutions three times a day for 3 consecutive days. Further the influence of environmental factors such as pH, nutrient availability, oxygen concentration and prebiotic dose on the efficacy of the prebiotic substances was investigated. Results: Three potential prebiotic substrates N-acetyl-D-mannosamine, succinic acid and Met-Pro were able to bring the beneficial proportion to > 95%. While the pH of the prebiotic solution did not have an influence on the prebiotic effect, the interplay of nutrient availability, oxygen concentration and prebiotic treatment resulted in significant changes of the microbial composition identifying N-acetyl-D-mannosamine as the most promising oral prebiotic substrate. Showing a clear dose dependent effect, concentrations of N-acetyl-D-mannosamine of 1.0 and 1.5 M resulted in a biofilm composition of 97% beneficial species. Conclusion: Introducing the prebiotic concept in oral health might reveal a valid approach for treatment and prevention of oral diseases and promote oral health.

Aim To investigate the influence of various surgical techniques for sinus augmentation on the volumetric changes of graft, membrane and the post-operative discomfort. Materials and Methods Eighteen patients in need of bilateral sinus floor elevation (SFE) were assigned to lateral SFE, transcrestal SFE and intralift procedures. CBCT images taken at baseline, 1 week and 6 weeks were analysed for volumetric changes in graft and Schneiderian membrane. Questionnaires were used to analyse post-op discomfort. Results The overall average graft volume obtained after 1 week was 1.87 cm3 (range 0.12–4.72 cm3). Volumes decreased after 6 weeks to an overall mean volume of 1.33 cm3 (range 0.10–4.29 cm3 – average decrease of 27.6%). After 6 weeks, the amount of graft volume decreased in every treatment option, ranging from −23.13% for the tSFE, over −24.55% for the lSFE, to −33.71% for the IL. Although all treatment options correspond in an increase in Schneiderian membrane volume, no statistically significant correlation between this increase and loss of graft volume could be obtained for all treatments (p = 0.97). Conclusion All SFE techniques provided sufficient graft volume for implant treatment. All techniques provoke a partially transient swelling of the Schneiderian membrane. All techniques resulted in a decrease in graft volume after 6 weeks; however, no significant differences were obtained between treatments. Furthermore, no statistical significant correlation between the post-operative swelling of the Schneiderian membrane and reduction in graft volume at 6 weeks could be obtained.

Aim To identify potential oral prebiotics that selectively stimulate commensal, albeit beneficial bacteria of the resident oral microbial community while suppressing the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Material and Methods Using Phenotype MicroArrays as a high-throughput method, the change in respiratory activity of 16 oral bacteria in response to 742 nutritional compounds was screened. Most promising prebiotic compounds were selected and applied in single species growth and biofilm formation assays, as well as dual species (beneficial-pathogen) competition assays. Results Increased respiratory activity could not always be related to an increase in growth or biofilm formation. Six compounds were used in dual species competition assays to directly monitor if selective nutritional stimulation of the beneficial bacterium results in the suppression of the pathogenic bacterium. Two compounds, beta-methyl-d-galactoside and N-acetyl-d-mannosamine, could be identified as potential oral prebiotic compounds, triggering selectively beneficial oral bacteria throughout the experiments and shifting dual species biofilm communities towards a beneficial dominating composition at in vitro level. Conclusion Our observations support the hypothesis that nutritional stimulation of beneficial bacteria by prebiotics could be used to restore the microbial balance in the oral cavity and by this promote oral health.

Objective The purpose of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the effectiveness of different systemic antibiotics in combination with scaling and root planing (SRP) when compared to SRP alone in patients with untreated chronic periodontitis. Background Although chronic periodontitis is mostly treated without adjunctive systemic antibiotics, some recent meta-analyses have shown clinical benefit for some systemic antibiotics when used as an adjunct to SRP. However, there is a wide variety of systemic antibiotic regimens used today. It remains unclear if the selected type of systemic antibiotic influences the magnitude of clinical benefit. Material and Methods The MEDLINE-PubMed database was searched from their earliest records through May 16, 2013. Several journals were hand searched and some authors were contacted for additional information. Outcome measures analysed were mean bleeding on probing change, mean clinical attachment level gain and mean probing pocket depth reduction. Extracted data were pooled using a random effect model. Weighted mean differences were calculated and heterogeneity was assessed. Results The search yielded 281 abstracts. Aim To assess, in a randomized study, the implant (clinical and radiological) and patient outcomes of guided implant placement at 1-year follow-up, compared to conventional implant treatment. Material and Methods A total of 314 were placed in 59 patients, randomly assigned to one of the treatment groups. Radiographic and clinical parameters were recorded at the time of implant placement, prosthesis instalment (baseline) and at 1-year follow-up. Patient satisfaction was measured with the oral health-related quality of life instrument (OHIP-49). Results No implants were lost. The mean marginal bone loss after the first year of loading was 0.04 mm (SD 0.34) for the guided surgery and 0.01 mm (SD 0.38) for the control groups. In the guided surgery groups, the mean number of surfaces with BOP and plaque at 1-year follow-up was 1.41 (SD 1.25) and 1.10 (SD 1.22), for the control groups this was, respectively, 1.37 (SD 1.25) and 1.77 (SD 1.64). The mean pocket probing depth was 2.81 mm (SD 1.1) for the guided, and 2.50 mm (SD 0.94) for the control groups. For all treatment groups, a significant improvement in quality of life was observed at 1-year follow-up (p ≤ 0.01), no differences between groups were observed. Conclusion Within the limitations of this study, no difference could be found at 1-year follow-up between the implant and patient outcome variables of guided or conventional implant treatment.

The widespread use of oral implants in recent years has resulted in various types of complications. One of those complications is the periapical implant lesion. Different factors have been proposed to play a role in the development and emergence of a periapical implant lesion. To date, there is no consensus on the etiology and therefore periapical lesions around dental implants are considered to have a multifactorial etiology. The diagnosis of an implant periapical lesion should be based on both clinical and radiological findings. Additionally, in order to apply the best treatment strategy the evolution of the lesion should be taken into account. The treatment of this kind of lesion, however, is still empiric. Data, primarily from case reports, seem to indicate that the removal of all granulation tissue is a first step to arrest the progression of the bone destruction. The removal of the apical part of the implant seems a valuable treatment strategy.

AIM: To assess in a randomized study the patient-centred outcome of two guided surgery systems (mucosa or bone supported) compared to conventional implant placement, in fully edentulous patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-nine patients (72 jaws) with edentulous maxillas and/ or mandibles, were consecutively recruited and randomly assigned to one of the treatment groups. Outcome measures were the Dutch version of the McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ-DLV), the Health-related quality of life instrument (HRQOL), visual analogue scales (VAS), the duration of the procedure, and the analgesic doses taken each day. RESULTS: Three hundred and fourteen implants were placed successfully. No statistical differences could be shown between treatment groups on pain response (MPQ-DLV), treatment perception (VAS) or number or kind of pain killers. For the HRQOLI-instrument, a significant difference was found between the Materialise Mucosa and Materialise Bone group at day 1 (p = 0.02) and day 2 (p = 0.01). For the duration of the surgery, a statistical difference (p = 0.005) was found between the Materialise mucosa and the Mental group, in favour of the first. CONCLUSION: In this study little difference could be found in the patient outcome variables of the different treatment groups. Despite etiological differences between aggressive and chronic periodontitis, the treatment concept for aggressive periodontitis is largely similar to that for chronic periodontitis. The goal of treatment is to create a clinical condition that is conducive to retaining as many teeth as possible for as long as possible. When a diagnosis has been made and risk factors have been identified, active treatment is commenced. The initial phase of active treatment consists of mechanical debridement, either alone or supplemented with antimicrobial drugs. Scaling and root planing has been shown to be effective in improving clinical indices, but does not always guarantee long-term stability. Antimicrobials can play a significant role in controlling aggressive periodontitis. Few studies have been published on this subject for localized aggressive periodontitis, but generalized aggressive periodontitis has been subject to more scrutiny. Studies have demonstrated that systemic antibiotics as an adjuvant to scaling and root planing are more effective in controlling disease compared with scaling and root planing alone or with supplemental application of local antibiotics or antiseptics. It has also become apparent that antibiotics ought to be administered with, or just after, mechanical debridement. Several studies have shown that regimens of amoxicillin combined with metronidazole or regimens of clindamycin are the most effective and are preferable to regimens containing doxycycline. Azithromycin has been shown to be a valid alternative to the regimen of amoxicillin plus metronidazole. A limited number of studies have been published on surgical treatment in patients with aggressive periodontitis, but the studies available show that the effect can be comparable with the effect on patients with chronic periodontitis, provided that proper oral hygiene is maintained, a strict maintenance program is followed and modifiable risk factors are controlled. Both access surgery and regenerative techniques have shown good results in patients with aggressive periodontitis. Once good periodontal health has been obtained, patients must be enrolled in a strict maintenance program that is directed toward controlling risk factors for disease recurrence and tooth loss. The most significant risk factors are noncompliance with regular maintenance care, smoking, high gingival bleeding index and poor plaque control. Aim: Although the complexity of the oral ecology and the ecological differences between health and disease are well accepted, a clear view on the dynamics in relation to disease is lacking. In this study the prevalence and abundance of 20 key oral bacteria was assessed in health and disease and more importantly a closer look was given to the inter-bacterial relationships. Materials and Methods: A blinded microbiological database was analyzed in this cross-sectional, retrospective study. The database was constructed based on microbiological analyses of samples from 6308 patients, with gradations of periodontitis (healthy to periodontitis). Data concerning the abundance of 20 oral bacteria and probing pocket depth was provided. Results: P. gingivalis, T. forsythia, T. denticola, E. nodatum, P. micra and P. intermedia showed a clear increase in abundance and prevalence with increasing pocket depth. Correlation matrices illustrated that almost all microorganisms were in one way correlated to other species and most of these correlations were significant. Several beneficial bacteria showed strong correlations with other beneficial bacteria. Combining several beneficial bacteria could therefore lead to a stronger effect. Patientsreceiving the 3D animations had significantly higher scores for both the post-testand the follow-up test, when compared with patients receiving sketch animations.Conclusion: 3D animations are more effective than real-time drawings for peri-odontal patient education in terms of knowledge recall. 3D animations may be apowerful tool for assisting in the information process.

BACKGROUND: There has been an explosion in research into possible associations between periodontitis and various systemic diseases and conditions.AIM: To review the evidence for associations between periodontitis and various systemic diseases and conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, chronic kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, cognitive impairment, obesity, metabolic syndrome and cancer, and to document headline discussions of the state of each field. Periodontal associations with diabetes, cardiovascular disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes were not discussed by working group 4.RESULTS: Working group 4 recognized that the studies performed to date were largely cross-sectional or case-control with few prospective cohort studies and no randomized clinical trials. The best current evidence suggests that periodontitis is characterized by both infection and pro-inflammatory events, which variously manifest within the systemic diseases and disorders discussed. Diseases with at least minimal evidence of an association with periodontitis include COPD, pneumonia, chronic kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, cognitive impairment, obesity, metabolic syndrome and cancer. The working group agreed that there is insufficient evidence to date to infer causal relationships with the exception that organisms originating in the oral microbiome can cause lung infections.CONCLUSIONS: The group was unanimous in their opinion that the reported associations do not imply causality, and establishment of causality will require new studies that fulfil the Bradford Hill or equivalent criteria. Precise and community-agreed case definitions of periodontal disease states must be implemented systematically to enable consistent and clearer interpretations of studies of the relationship to systemic diseases. The members of the working group were unanimous in their opinion that to develop data that best inform clinicians, investigators and the public, studies should focus on robust disease outcomes and avoid surrogate endpoints. It was concluded that because of the relative immaturity of the body of evidence for each of the purported relationships, the field is wide open and the gaps in knowledge are large.

This 3-year prospective randomized controlled trial compared the clinical, microbiological and biochemical outcome of minimally (Turned, Tur) and moderately rough (TiUnite®, TiU) implant surfaces in a split-mouth design.The study population included 14 subjects: nine fully edentulous and five partially edentulous subjects with a history of periodontitis. Implants (n = 78, 39 Tur and 39 TiU) were installed randomly in each patient. Peri-implant clinical parameters and intra-oral radiographs were recorded after 3 years of loading. Longer follow-up and studies using different implant types are needed to confirm the statement that minimally and moderately rough implant surfaces perform similar, both from a clinical and from a microbiological point of view.

Abstract: Background: Recent studies showed that qPCR could detect bacteria related to periodontitis and peri-implantitis in a low concentration after full-mouth tooth extraction. This study monitored the microbiota from tooth extraction, over 9 months of full edentulism, up to 1 year after abutment connection. Material and methods: Ten patients with severe periodontitis were recruited. Six months after tooth extraction, implants were inserted. Three to 6 months later, they were connected to abutments. Plaque samples were collected from the tongue dorsum, saliva, and subgingival area (teeth/implants) before extraction up to 1 year after abutment connection, and analysed via culture, qPCR, and checkerboard technology. Results: A reduction in the total amount of aerobic and anaerobic CFU/ml was observed. The concentration of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Tannerella forsythia (qPCR and checkerboard) in the saliva and, to a lower extent, on the tongue dorsum reduced. For Prevotella intermedia, changes were negligible and no changes could be detected for Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. The pristine subgingival niches were quickly colonized by key pathogens. Their final concentration remained low, while the detection frequencies remained very high over time. Conclusion: Complete edentulation results in a significant reduction of bacteria related to periodontitis and peri-implantitis, with the exception of A. actinomycetemcomitans, which might indicate that key pathogens can survive without pockets.

Abstract Background: As in other fields of healthcare, probiotics have been introduced for prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases. Objective: This review was initiated to explore whether the use of probiotics can influence the periodontal microbiota and periodontal health. Materials and Methods: Literature on the mode of action of oral probiotics was reviewed and a systematic review was performed on the microbiological and clinical effects of oral probiotics on periodontal health. Results: Three animal and 11 in vivo human studies were retrieved. Six studies reported on microbiological effects whereas eight studies report on clinical effects. Seven studies were performed on healthy or gingivitis patients and four studies on periodontitis patients. Many of the retrieved studies are pilot in nature and with low quality. The high degree of heterogeneity between studies hampered analysis. Conclusion: Taking into consideration all limitations, the currently available data indicate an effect of probiotics on the oral microbiota and a more limited effect on clinical periodontal outcome measures. However, there is an urgent need for properly conducted clinical trials where probiotics are used as adjuncts to standard periodontal care, similar to antibiotics, using probiotic strains with, at least at an in vitro level, proven periodontal probiotic effects.

Abstract Introduction: Many studies have dealt with the clinical outcome of oral implants, yet none applied a randomized split-mouth design for a long-term follow-up of similar implant systems. Aim: To evaluate two oral implant systems with different surface characteristics in a randomized split-mouth design and to radiologically analyse peri-implant bone level and density over an up to 16-year period. Materials and Methods: The study comprised clinical and radiographic records of 18 partially edentulous patients treated with both implant types randomly placed in either left or right jaw sides. Outcome was evaluated over time. Results: Clinical and radiographic parameters showed no significant differences over time for both systems. Ten years after implant placement, a significantly increasing peri-implant bone density was noted, while Periotest values were found to be significantly decreasing. Fifteen years after implant loading, mean bone loss was 0.02 mm (range −1.15 to 1.51; SD 0.45) for Astra Tech® implants (n=24) and 0.31 mm (range −0.98 to 2.31; SD 0.69) for Branemark® implants (n=23). Conclusions: The study failed to demonstrate significant differences in the outcome of the peri-implant bone for two implant systems with different surface characteristics. J Clin Periodontol 2010; 37: 398–403. doi: 10.1111/j.1600-051X.2010.01535.x Abstract Aim: To assess the accuracy of implants placed flapless by a stereolithographic template in partially edentulous patients. Material and Methods: Eight patients, requiring two to four implants (maxilla or mandible), were consecutively recruited. Radiographical data were obtained by means of a cone beam or a multi-slice CT scan and imported in a software program. Implants (n=21) were planned in a virtual environment, leading to the manufacture of one stereolithographic template per patient to guide the implant placement in a one-stage flapless procedure. A postoperative cone beam CT was performed to calculate the difference between virtual implant (n=21) positions in the preoperative planning and postoperative situation. Results: A mean angular deviation of 2.7° (range 0.4–8, SD 1.9), with a mean deviation at the apex of 1.0 mm (range 0.2–3.0, SD 0.7), was observed. If one patient, a dropout because of non-conformity with the protocol, was excluded, the angular deviation was reduced to 2.2° (range 0.6–3.9, SD 1.1), and the apical deviation to 0.9 mm (range 0.2–1.8). Conclusion: Based on this limited patient population, a flapless implant installation appears to be a useful procedure even when based on accurate and reliable 3D CT-based image data and a dedicated implant planning software.

Aims: The aim of this paper was to analyse the aetiology and characteristics of 2000 patients who visited a multidisciplinary bad breath clinic in Leuven, Belgium and to correlate organoleptic ratings with portable device measurements. Materials and Methods: The characteristics and aetiology of breath malodour of two thousand consecutive patients who visited a halitosis consultation were explored by means of a standard questionnaire and a clinical examination, including organoleptic scores provided by a trained and calibrated judge, and a portable bad breath detector (Halimeter®). Results: Most patients came without referral and had complaints for several years (mean: 7 years, SD: 8 years). For 76% of the patients, an oral cause was found [tongue coating (43%), gingivitis/periodontitis (11%) or a combination of the two (18%)]. Pseudo-halitosis/halitophobia was diagnosed in 16% of the cases; and ear, nose and throat/extra-oral causes were found in 4% of the patients. Most patients had an organoleptic score

In the past few decades, more patients have been treated orthodontically, but no longitudinal study has compared orthodontic bands and brackets microbiologically and clinically.This longitudinal trial (split-mouth design) included 24 patients. Microbiology (sub- and supragingival), probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP), and gingival crevicular fluid flow (GCF) were assessed at baseline (band placement) and at weeks 18 (bracket bonding) 20, 24, and 36. A statistical comparison was made over time and among the banded, bonded, and control sites.The aerobe/anaerobe ratio of sub- and supragingival colony forming units decreased significantly (relatively more anaerobes) over the study period for the banded and bonded sites (P0.001). This decrease was accompanied by significant elevations in PD, BOP, and GCF. These changes occurred faster after bonding compared to banding. No significant changes were observed 18 weeks after banding with the exception of increased PD (P0.001). At week 36, all microbial and clinical variables at the bonded site had changed significantly in the negative direction (P0.001) compared to week 18. The control sites did not show any significant changes over time, indicating that the effects were localized.The placement of fixed orthodontic appliances had a significant impact on microbial and clinical variables. The changes occurred faster at the bonded sites compared to the banded sites, probably because wire insertion caused difficulties in approximal cleaning. Over the long term, banding did not lead to more adverse microbial and periodontal effects than bonding.
