1. Panel debate on energy production in high school physics teaching

Abstract: This paper presents a method to develop students' knowledge about energy resources and energy production through scientific argumentation in a panel debate. The method was used with fifteen different 11th grade classes in a high school in Romania. In the last five years, research was conducted on the change in attitudes of students towards different types of energy resources and how they accepted environmental hazards resulting from energy production. Throughout these years, several misconceptions were observed regarding the origin of energy resources, the energy production processes, and their effects on the environment. To have a sound understanding of these misconceptions, a study was conducted with the help of a 21-item multiple-choice energy resources knowledge assessment. The test was completed by 720 high school students (9th to 11th grade) from nine different schools in Transylvania, Romania. Data analysis shows that misunderstandings regarding energy resources and energy production were similar to those in US schools and presented in other research papers. To help create a society well-prepared to make decisions about energy production constraints, it is essential that we add a chapter to the Physics curriculum. In this paper, we present our arguments for introducing energy production as a new topic in the Physics curriculum. Our results show the energy panel debate is a very effective method for teaching this topic. Nous presentons une methode utilisant des discussions en table ronde, qui vise l'amelioration des connaissances en ressources et productions energetiques chez les etudiants. La methode a ete utilisee avec quinze classes d'etudiants de 11e annee dans des ecoles secondaires de Roumanie. Pendant cinq ans, la recherche s'est faite sur le changement d'attitude des etudiants face a differents types de ressources energetiques et comment ils acceptent les impacts environnementaux resultant de la production energetique. Pendant ces annees, nous avons note plusieurs idees fausses concernant l'origine des ressources energetiques et les processus de production d'energie, avec leurs effets sur l'environnement. Afin d'avoir une solide comprehension de ces idees fausses, nous avons fait une etude a l'aide d'un test de 21 questions a choix multiples sur les ressources energetiques. Le test a ete complete par 720 etudiants du secondaire (9e a 11e annee) de neuf ecoles differentes en Transylvanie, Roumanie. L'analyse des donnees indique que les idees fausses touchant la ressource et la production energetique sont similaires aux idees fausses identifiees dans d'autres publications de recherches faites aux U.S.A. Pour aider a creer une societe bien preparee a prendre les decisions concernant les contraintes touchant la production energetique, il est essentiel d'ajouter un chapitre au cursus de physique au secondaire. Nous presentons ici nos arguments pour l'introduction de la production energetique comme nouveau chapitre a ajouter au cursus de physique. 2. The 2016 Vela glitch: a key to neutron star internal structure and dynamics

Abstract: High resolution, pulse to pulse observation of the 2016 Vela glitch and its relaxation provided an opportunity to probe the neutron star internal structure and dynamics with unprecedented detail. We use the observations of this glitch to infer superfluid characteristics in the framework of the vortex creep model. The glitch rise time constraint of 12.6 seconds put stringent limits on the angular momentum exchange between the crustal superfluid and the observed crust. Together with the observed excess acceleration in the rotation rate as compared to the post-glitch equilibrium value this discriminates crustal superfluid-crust lattice and core superfluid-crustal normal matter coupling time-scales. An evident decrease in the crustal rotation rate immediately before the glitch is consistent with the formation of a new vortex trap zone that initiates the large scale vortex unpinning avalanche. Formation of vortex trap by a crust breaking quake induces short-lived magnetospheric changes. The long term post-glitch spin-down rate evolution reveals the moments of inertia and recoupling time-scales of the superfluid layers participating in the glitch and leads to an estimation of the time to the next glitch which agrees with the time interval between the 2016 and 2019 glitches. Our results are consistent with theoretical estimates of effective neutron and proton masses in the superfluid. Abstract: A fractional step lattice Boltzmann method (FSLBM) is developed for incompressible fluid flow in three dimensions. The presented scheme is based on the time-evolution of velocity and pressure in contrast to the evolution of probability density functions. Furthermore, the discretization with coarse corrective steps (CCS) facilitates calculations up to large Reynolds numbers. The method is validated for the friction factor of pipes with various surface roughness, as well as, for the Reynolds stress of smooth pipes. A good agreement is found to general scaling laws and high quality DNS data respectively. Development of turbulent flow in a pipe calculated with ≈ 0.57 × 109 lattice elements on a single GPU is reported. FSLBMs can process 56.6 million elements per GB of GPU memory which is considered a near-optimum memory efficiency for 3D lattice Boltzmann calculations.

Abstract: We investigated the detailed torque-reversal behavior of 4U 1626-67 in the framework of the recently developed comprehensive model of the inner disk radius and torque calculations for neutron stars accreting from geometrically thin disks. The model can reproduce the relation between the torque and X-ray luminosity across the torque reversals of 4U 1626-67. Our results imply that: (1) rotational equilibrium is reached when the inner disk radius equals the co-rotation radius, r(co), while the conventional Alfven radius is greater than but close to r(co) ; (2) both spin-up and spin-down torques are operating on either side of torque reversal; and (3) with the increasing accretion rate, the spin-up torque associated with accretion onto the star gradually dominates the spin-down torque exerted by the disk. Abstract: The discovery of pulsating ultra-luminous X-ray sources (PULX) suggests that neutron stars are presumably common within the ultra-luminous X-ray source (ULX) population though the majority of the population members are currently lacking pulsations. These systems are likely to host neutron stars accreting mass at super-Eddington (super-critical) rates from their massive companion in high-mass X-ray binaries. Taking into account the spherization of the accretion flow in the super-critical regime, the beaming of X-ray emission, and the reduction of the scattering cross-section in a strong magnetic field, we infer the ranges for the neutron-star surface magnetic dipole field strengths, beaming fractions, and fastness parameters in the PULX M82 X-2, ULX NGC 5907, ULX NGC 7793 P13, NGC 300 ULX1, M51 ULX-7, NGC 1313 X-2, and Swift J0243.6+6124 from a set of conditions based on a variety of combinations of different spin and luminosity states. Using the observed spin-up rates under the critical luminosity condition, we estimate the surface-field strengths in the $\sim 10^{11}-10^{13}\,{\rm G}$ range for all PULX. In general, the results of our analysis under the subcritical luminosity condition indicate surface-field strengths in the $\sim 10^{11}-10^{15}\,{\rm G}$ range. We argue that the PULX do not require magnetar-strength surface dipole fields if beaming is taken into account; yet the fields are strong enough for the neutron stars in ULX to magnetically channel the accretion flow in super-critical accretion disks., 23 pages, 10 figures, 8 tables, published in Astrophysical Journal (updated according to the published version)

Abstract: The phase transitions of random-field q-state Potts models in d=3 dimensions are studied by renormalization-group theory by exact solution of a hierarchical lattice and, equivalently, approximate Migdal-Kadanoff solutions of a cubic lattice. The recursion, under rescaling, of coupled random-field and random-bond (induced under rescaling by random fields) coupled probability distributions is followed to obtain phase diagrams. Unlike the Ising model (q=2), several types of random fields can be defined for q >= 3 Potts models, including random-axis favored, random-axis disfavored, random-axis randomly favored or disfavored cases, all of which are studied. Quantitatively very similar phase diagrams are obtained, for a given q for the three types of field randomness, with the low-temperature ordered phase persisting, increasingly as temperature is lowered, up to random-field threshold in d=3, which is calculated for all temperatures below the zero-field critical temperature. Phase diagrams thus obtained are compared as a function of $q$. The ordered phase in the low-q models reaches higher temperatures, while in the high-q models it reaches higher random fields. Abstract: Highlights • A new method to quantify infra slow oscillations (ISO) in sleep EEG was developed. • Binary sleep spindling signal (on-off) shows ISO at peak frequency, Background It has previously been reported that EEG sigma (10–15 Hz) activity during sleep exhibits infraslow oscillations (ISO) with a period of 50 s. However, a detailed analysis of the ISO of individually identified sleep spindles is not available. New method We investigated basic properties of ISO during baseline sleep of 34 healthy young human participants using new and established methods. The analyses focused on fast sleep spindle and sigma activity (13–15 Hz) in NREM stage 2 and slow wave sleep (SWS). To describe ISO in sigma activity we analyzed power of power of the EEG signal. For the study of ISO in sleep spindle activity we applied a new method in which the EEG signal was reduced to a spindle on/off binary square signal. Its spectral properties were contrasted to that of a square signal wherein the same spindles and also the inter spindle intervals were permutated randomly. This approach was validated using surrogate data with imposed ISO modulation. Results We confirm the existence of ISO in sigma activity albeit with a frequency below the previously reported 0.02 Hz. These ISO are most prominent in the high sigma band and over the centro-parieto-occipital regions. A similar modulation is present in spindle activity. ISO in sleep spindles are most prominent in the centro-parieto-occipital regions, left hemisphere and second half of the night independent of the number of spindles. Conclusions The comparison of spectral properties of binary event signals and permutated event signals is effective in detecting slow oscillatory phenomena.

10. The Largest Crab Glitch and the Vortex Creep Model

Abstract: The Crab pulsar displayed its largest glitch on 2017 November. An extended initial spin-up phase of this largest glitch was resolved, for the first time with high cadence of observations both in radio and X-rays on a time-scale of 2 days. A combination of crustquake and vortex unpinning models is invoked to account for the extended spin-up, magnitude and post-glitch relaxation characteristics of this glitch. We evaluate the extended spin-up followed by the familiar spin-down as due to the creep response to the initial induced inward motion of some vortex lines pinned to broken crustal plates moving inward towards the rotation axis, together with the common and familiar post-glitch creep response to the sudden outward motion of vortices unpinned at the glitch. Our analysis confirms that the number of unpinned vortices participating in glitches are similar in all Crab glitches, and within an order of magnitude in all glitches from all pulsars. This typical number of unpinned vortices is related to the broken plate size in quakes as triggers for vortex unpinning avalanches. The physical determinant of this universal broken plate size is in turn the critical strain angle in the neutron star crust. Occurrence of this largest Crab glitch after a relatively long inactive period is consistent with accumulation of the pinned vorticity to be tapped., Comment: To appear in MNRAS

Abstract: The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, >8m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 degree collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g., GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. 13. Peculiar glitch of PSR J1119−6127 and extension of the vortex creep model

Abstract: Glitches are sudden changes in rotation frequency and spin-down rate, observed from pulsars of all ages. Standard glitches are characterized by a positive step in angular velocity ($\Delta\Omega$ $ > $ $0$) and a negative step in the spin-down rate ($\Delta \dot \Omega$ $ < $ $0$) of the pulsar. There are no glitch-associated changes in the electromagnetic signature of rotation-powered pulsars in all cases so far. For the first time, in the last glitch of PSR J1119-6127, there is clear evidence for changing emission properties coincident with the glitch. This glitch is also unusual in its signature. Further, the absolute value of the spin-down rate actually decreases in the long term. This is in contrast to usual glitch behaviour. In this paper we extend the vortex creep model in order to take into account these peculiarities. We propose that a starquake with crustal plate movement towards the rotational poles of the star induces inward vortex motion which causes the unusual glitch signature. The component of the magnetic field perpendicular to the rotation axis will decrease, giving rise to a permanent change in the pulsar external torque., Comment: accepted by MNRAS, 10 pages, 2 figures

Abstract: The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) was studied within ESA M3 Cosmic Vision framework and participated in the final down-selection for a launch slot in 2022-2024. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument, LOFT will study the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions, such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions of accretion flows close to black holes and neutron stars, and the supra-nuclear densities in the interior of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, 10 m 2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 deg collimated field of view) and a WideField Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g. GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. 15. Nonlinear interglitch dynamics, the braking index of the Vela pulsar and the time to the next glitch

Abstract: The inter-glitch timing of the Vela pulsar is characterized by a constant second derivative of the rotation rate. This takes over after the post-glitch exponential relaxation, and is completed at about the time of the next glitch. The vortex creep model explains the second derivatives in terms of non-linear response to the glitch. We present inter-glitch timing fits to the present sample covering 16 large glitches, taking into account the possibility that in some glitches part of the step in spin-down rate may involve a "persistent shift", as observed in the Crab pulsar. Modifying the expression for the time between glitches with this hypothesis leads to better agreement with the observed inter-glitch time intervals. We extrapolate the inter-glitch model fits to obtain spin-down rates just prior to each glitch, and use these to calculate the braking index n = 2.81 +/- 0.12. The next glitch should occur around Dec. 22, 2017 +/- 197 days if no persistent shift is involved, but could occur as early as July 27, 2016 +/- 152 days if the 2013 glitch gave rise to a typical Vela persistent shift. Abstract: We study the evolution of newborn neutron stars in high-mass X-ray binaries interacting with a wind-fed super-Eddington disk. The inner disk is regularized to a radiation-dominated quasi-spherical configuration for which we calculate the inner radius of the disk, the total luminosity of the system and the torque acting on the neutron star accordingly, following the evolution of the system through the ejector and early propeller stages. We find that the systems with $B \gtrsim 10^{13}$ G pass through a short ($\sim 20\,{\rm yr}$) ejector stage appearing as supernova impostors followed by a propeller stage lasting $\sim 10^3\,{\rm yr}$. In the super-critical propeller stage the system is still bright ($L\sim 10^{40}\,{\rm erg\, s^{-1}}$) due to the spindown power and therefore appears as an ultra-luminous X-ray source (ULX). The system evolves into pulsating ULX (PULX) when the neutron star spins down to a period ($P\sim 1$ s) allowing for accretion onto its surface to commence. Systems with lower magnetic fields, $B \sim 10^{11}$ G, pass through a long ($10^5\,{\rm yr}$) super-critical propeller stage with luminosities similar to those of the ultra-luminous super-soft sources (ULS), $L \lesssim 10^{40}\,{\rm erg\, s^{-1}}$. The equilibrium periods of these systems in the accretion stage is about $10\,{\rm ms}$, which is much smaller than the typical period range of PULX observed to date. Such systems could have a larger population, but their pulsations would be elusive due to the smaller size of the magnetosphere. Our results suggest that the ULS and some nonpulsating ULX are rapidly spinning and highly magnetized young neutron stars at the super-critical propeller stage., ApJ in press. 9 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: We discuss the minimum glitch size of Crab observed by Espinoza et al. (2014). Modelling the crustquake as a trigger mechanism we estimate the size of the broken plate. The plate size obtained, D $\sim 100 m$ is comparable to plate size estimates for PSR J1119--6127. The plate size naturally leads to an estimate of the number of unpinned vortices involved in the glitch, $N \sim 10^{13} $. This number is of the same order in all Crab and Vela pulsar glitches. The mimimum glitch relates the constancy of all these numbers among different pulsars to the basic plate size involved in crust breaking. This in turn depends on the critical strain angle $\theta_{cr}$ of the Coulomb lattice in the neutron star crust. The minimum glitch size implies $\theta_{cr} \sim 10^{-1}$ in agreement with theoretical and computational estimates., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figures. Approved by MNRAS

Abstract: The two component model describes neutron star dynamics incorporating the response of the superfluid interior. Conventional solutions and applications involve constant external torques, as appropriate for radio pulsars on dynamical timescales. We present the general solution of two component dynamics under arbitrary time dependent external torques, with internal torques that are linear in the rotation rates, or with the extremely non-linear internal torques due to vortex creep. The two-component model incorporating the response of linear or nonlinear internal torques can now be applied not only to radio pulsars but also to magnetars and to neutron stars in binary systems, with strong observed variability and noise in the spin-down or spin-up rates. Our results allow the extraction of the time dependent external torques from the observed spin-down (or spin-up) time series, $\dot{\Omega}(t)$. Abstract: G. Srinivasan et al. (1990) proposed a simple and elegant explanation for the reduction of the neutron star magnetic dipole moment during binary evolution leading to low mass X-ray binaries and eventually to millisecond pulsars: Quantized vortex lines in the neutron star core superfluid will pin against the quantized flux lines of the proton superconductor. As the neutron star spins down in the wind accretion phase of binary evolution, outward motion of vortex lines will reduce the dipole magnetic moment in proportion to the rotation rate. The presence of a toroidal array of flux lines makes this mechanism inevitable and independent of the angle between the rotation and magnetic axes. The incompressibility of the flux-line array (Abrikosov lattice) determines the epoch when the mechanism will be effective throughout the neutron star. Flux vortex pinning will not be effective during the initial young radio pulsar phase. It will, however, be effective and reduce the dipole moment in proportion with the rotation rate during the epoch of spindown by wind accretion as proposed by Srinivasan et al. With a predefined choice of parameters like the collision term, density, bulk modulus and with standard Zou-He boundary conditions, it is shown that several flow problems can be covered. 21. Optical Excess Of Dim Isolated Neutron Stars

Abstract: The optical excess in the spectra of dim isolated neutron stars (XDINs) is a significant fraction of their rotational energy loss-rate. This is strikingly different from the situation in isolated radio pulsars. We investigate this problem in the framework of the fallback disc model. The optical spectra can be powered by magnetic stresses on the innermost disc matter, as the energy dissipated is emitted as blackbody radiation mainly from the inner rim of the disc. In the fallback disc model, XDINs are the sources evolving in the propeller phase with similar torque mechanisms. In this this model, the ratio of the total magnetic work that heats up the inner disc matter is expected to be similar for different XDINs. Optical luminosities that are calculated consistently with the the optical spectra and the theoretical constraints on the inner disc radii give very similar ratios of the optical luminosity to the rotational energy loss rate for all these sources. These ratios indicate that a significant fraction of the magnetic torque heats up the disc matter while the remaining fraction expels disc matter from the system. For XDINs, the contribution of heating by X-ray irradiation to the optical luminosity is negligible in comparison with the magnetic heating. The correlation we expect between the optical luminosities and the rotational energy loss-rates of XDINs can be a property of the systems with low X-ray luminosities, in particular those in the propeller phase., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. 22. Numerical study of bipolar coordinate Jeffery-Hamel flow

Abstract: In this paper we report the bipolar coordinate formulation of Jeffery-Hamel (JH) flow and study vorticity-stream function, bipolar coordinate JH and conventional JH solutions. It is shown that our derived equation can intrinsically describe the flow behavior in curved geometries and it gives improved results as compared to conventional JH theory.

Abstract: High-time-resolution X-ray observations of compact objects provide direct access to strong-field gravity, to the equation of state of ultra-dense matter and to black hole masses and spins. A 10 m^2-class instrument in combination with good spectral resolution is required to exploit the relevant diagnostics and answer two of the fundamental questions of the European Space Agency (ESA) Cosmic Vision Theme "Matter under extreme conditions", namely: does matter orbiting close to the event horizon follow the predictions of general relativity? What is the equation of state of matter in neutron stars? The Large Observatory For X-ray Timing (LOFT), selected by ESA as one of the four Cosmic Vision M3 candidate missions to undergo an assessment phase, will revolutionise the study of collapsed objects in our galaxy and of the brightest supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei. Thanks to an innovative design and the development of large-area monolithic Silicon Drift Detectors, the Large Area Detector (LAD) on board LOFT will achieve an effective area of ~12 m^2 (more than an order of magnitude larger than any spaceborne predecessor) in the 2-30 keV range (up to 50 keV in expanded mode), yet still fits a conventional platform and small/medium-class launcher. With this large area and a spectral resolution of, 29 pages, 10 figures. Accepted for publication in Experimental Astronomy

Abstract: The LOFT mission concept is one of four candidates selected by ESA for the M3 launch opportunity as Medium Size missions of the Cosmic Vision programme. The launch window is currently planned for between 2022 and 2024. LOFT is designed to exploit the diagnostics of rapid X-ray flux and spectral variability that directly probe the motion of matter down to distances very close to black holes and neutron stars, as well as the physical state of ultra-dense matter. Abstract: The dynamic consequences of the existence of pinned vort1c1ty in a rotating superfluid are studied by means of a simple model: the behavior of a rotating cylinder which contains a uniform region of either weakly or strongly pinned vorticity and which is being spun up or spun down by an external torque. It is shown that in the case of strong pinning, spin down can lead to periodic jumps (glitches) in the rotation frequency of the cylinder, followed by quasi-oscillatory relaxation, while in the case of weak pinning no glitches occur unless the cylinder is shaken so violently that vortices unpin. We conclude that the giant glitches and post-glitch behavior observed in the Vela pulsar may be explained by the sudden release of some 10% of the strongly pinned vortices in the neutron crust every few years as a result of pulsar spin down. We further suggest that the post-glitch behavior observed in the Crab pulsar can be explained if the macroglitches represent vorticity jumps induced by small starquakes in the weakly pinned vortex region expected in the crust of a young neutron star, and that the differences in "glitch" be havior of the Crab, Vela, and older pul~ars may be explained on evolutionary grounds.

Abstract: Recent measurements showed that the period derivative of the 'high-B' radio pulsar PSR J1734-3333 is increasing with time. For neutron stars evolving with fallback disks, this rotational behavior is expected in certain phases of the long-term evolution. Using the same model as employed earlier to explain the evolution of anomalous X-ray pulsars and soft gamma-ray repeaters, we show that the period, the first and second period derivatives and the X-ray luminosity of this source can simultaneously acquire the observed values for a neutron star evolving with a fallback disk. We find that the required strength of the dipole field that can produce the source properties is in the range of 10^{12} - 10^{13} G on the pole of the neutron star. When the model source reaches the current state properties of PSR J1734-3333, accretion onto the star has not started yet, allowing the source to operate as a regular radio pulsar. Our results imply that PSR J1734-3333 is at an age of ~ 3 x 10^4 - 2 x 10^5 years. Such sources will have properties like the X-ray dim isolated neutron stars or transient AXPs at a later epoch of weak accretion from the diminished fallback disk., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Abstract: Two energetic hard X-ray bursts have recently triggered the Fermi and Swift space observatories from the rotation powered pulsar, PSR J1119-6127. We have performed in depth spectral and temporal analyses of these two events. Our extensive searches in both observatory data for lower luminosity bursts uncovered 10 additional events from the source. We report here on the timing and energetics of the 12 bursts from PSR J1119-6127 during its burst active phase of 2016 July 26 and 28. We also found a spectral softer X-ray flux enhancement in a post burst episode, which shows evidence of cooling. We discuss here the implications of these results on the nature of this unusual high-field radio pulsar, which firmly place it within the typical magnetar population., Revised version, accepted for publication in ApJL. Abstract: Treatment of the vortex motion in the superfluids of the inner crust and the outer core of neutron stars is a key ingredient in modeling a number of pulsar phenomena, including glitches and magnetic field evolution. After recalculating the microscopic vortex velocity in the inner crust, we evaluate the velocity for the vortices in the outer core for the first time. The vortex motion between pinning sites is found to be substantially faster in the inner crust than in the outer core, $v_0^{\rm crust} \sim 10^{7}\mbox{\cms} \gg v_0^{\rm core} \sim 1\mbox{\cms}$. One immediate result is that vortex creep is always in the nonlinear regime in the outer core in contrast to the inner crust, where both nonlinear and linear regimes of vortex creep are possible. Abstract: When an accreting star is close to rotational equilibrium between the dipole component of the stellar magnetic field and the accretion disk, the star's rotation rate is roughly of the order of the Keplerean rotation rate at the inner boundary of the disk, estimated as the conventional Alfven radius. A range of frequencies higher than this equilibrium rotation frequency can naturally arise if the accretion flow is channeled by higher multipoles of the star's magnetic field. The higher multipole components of the magnetic field will balance the material stresses of the accretion flow at radii closer to the star. The Kepler frequencies associated with these generalized Alfven radii increase with the order of the multipole. Other frequency bands, like the epicyclic frequencies associated with the accretion flow, may in turn be higher than the Kepler frequencies. We present expressions for the spectrum of higher frequencies arising due to these effects. Kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillation frequencies that are much higher than the rotation rate of the neutron star, as observed from the recently discovered 11 Hz (P = 90 ms) X-ray pulsar IGR J17480-2446 in the globular cluster Terzan 5, may be due to modulation of the accretion rate by the excitation of these modes in the accretion flow. The very high QPO frequencies observed from the soft gamma repeaters SGR 1806-20 (P = 5.2 s) and SGR 1900+14 (P = 7.5 s) may also correspond to these characteristic frequencies if SGRs accrete from fallback disks around them.

Abstract: We investigate dynamical coupling timescales of a neutron star's superfluid core, taking into account the interactions of quantized neutron vortices with quantized flux lines of the proton superconductor in addition to the previously considered scattering of the charged components against the spontaneous magnetization of the neutron vortex line. We compare the cases where vortex motion is constrained in different ways by the array of magnetic flux tubes associated with superconducting protons. This includes absolute pinning to and creep across a uniform array of flux lines. The effect of a toroidal arrangement of flux lines is also considered. The inclusion of a uniform array of flux tubes in the neutron star core significantly decreases the timescale of coupling between the neutron and proton fluid constituents in all cases. For the toroidal component, creep response similar to that of the inner crust superfluid is possible.

Abstract: We searched for hard X-ray (20-300 keV) emission from nine central compact objects (CCOs) 1E 1207.4-5209, 1WGA J1713-3949, J082157.5-430017, J085201.4-461753, J160103.1-513353, J1613483-5055, J181852.0-150213, J185238.6+004020, and J232327.9+584843 with the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory observatory. We applied spectral imaging analysis and did not detect any of the sources with luminosity upper limits in the range of 10(33)-10(34) erg s(-1) in the 20-75 keV band. For nearby CCOs (less than 4 kpc), the upper-limit luminosities are an order of magnitude lower than the measured persistent hard X-ray luminosities of anomalous X-ray pulsars. This may indicate that the CCOs are low magnetic field systems with fallback disks around them.

Abstract: In the inner regions of accretion discs around compact objects, the orbital frequency of the gas deviates from the local Keplerian value. For long-wavelength modes in this region, the radial epicyclic frequency K is higher than the azimuthal frequency Ω. This has significant implications for models of the twin kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in many neutron star sources that traditionally identify the frequencies of the 2 kHz QPOs with dynamical frequencies in the accretion disc. The recognition that the highest frequency in the transition or boundary region of the disc may be the epicyclic frequency also significantly affects the constraints imposed by the observation of high-frequency QPOs on the mass and radius of the compact objects.

Abstract: The long term (~1.5 years) X-ray enhancement and the accompanying infrared enhancement light curves of the anomalous X-ray pulsar 1E 2259+58 following the major bursting epoch can be accounted for by the relaxation of a fall back disk that has been pushed back by a gamma-ray flare. The required burst energy estimated from the results of our model fits is low enough for such a burst to have remained below the detection limits. We find that an irradiated disk model with a low irradiation efficiency is in good agreement with both X-ray and infrared data. Non-irradiated disk models also give a good fit to the X-ray light curve, but are not consistent with the infrared data for the first week of the enhancement.

Abstract: In this phantom study, we tried to compare matching dosimetry differences between half-blocking of Co-60 and asymmetric collimation of the 4 MV photons during craniospinal irradiation. The dose distributions are compared and discussed. Firstly, some gaps with different sizes are left between cranial and spinal field borders. Secondly, the fields are overlapped in the same sizes. We irradiate the films located in water-equivalent solid phantoms with Co-60 and 4 MV photon beams. This study indicates that the field placement errors in ± 1 mm are acceptable for both Co-60 and 4 MV photon energies during craniospinal irradiation with half-beam block technique. Within these limits the dose variations are specified in ± 5%. However, the setup errors that are more than 1 mm are unacceptable for both asymmetric collimation of 4 MV photon and half-blocking of Co-60.

Abstract: We analysed the RXTE archival data of 1E 1048.1-5937 covering a time span of more than one year. The spin down rate of this source decreases by 30 percent during the observation. We could not resolve the X-ray flux variations because of contamination by Eta Carinae. We find that the level of pulse frequency fluctuations of 1E 1048.1-5937 is consistent with typical noise levels of accretion powered pulsars. Recent RXTE observations of 1E 2259+586 have shown a constant spin down with a very low upper limit on timing noise. We used the RXTE archival X-ray observations of 1E 2259+586 to show that the intrinsic X-ray luminosity times series is also stable, with an rms fractional variation of less than 15 percent. Abstract: The dim isolated neutron stars (XDINs) have periods in the same range as the anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and the soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs). We apply the fallback disk model, which explains the period clustering and other properties of AXP/SGRs, to the six XDINs with measured periods and period derivatives. Present properties of XDINs are obtained in evolutionary scenarios with surface dipole magnetic fields $B_0 \sim 10^{12}$ G. The XDINs have gone through an accretion epoch with rapid spin-down earlier, and have emerged in their current state, with the X-ray luminosity provided by neutron star cooling and no longer by accretion. Our results indicate that the known XDINs are not likely to be active radio pulsars, as the low $B_0$, together with their long periods place these sources clearly below the "death valley"., 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: A region of toroidally oriented quantized flux lines must exist in the proton superconductor in the core of the neutron star. This region will be a site of vortex pinning and creep. Entrainment of the neutron superfluid with the crustal lattice leads to a requirement of superfluid moment of inertia associated with vortex creep in excess of the available crustal moment of inertia. This will effect constraints on the equation of state. Abstract: Using X-ray data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), we report the pulse timing results of the accretion powered high mass X-ray binary (HMXRB) pulsar 4U 1907+09 covering a time span of almost two years. We measured three new pulse periods in addition to the previously measured four pulse periods. We are able to connect pulse arrival times in phase for more than a year. The source has been spinning down almost at a constant rate with a spin down rate of \dot \nu = (-3.54 \pm 0.02) \times 10^{-14} Hz s ^{-1} for more than 15 years. Residuals of pulse arrival times yield a very low level of random walk noise strengths \sim 2 \times 10^{-20} rad ^{2} sec ^{-3} on a time scale of 383 days, which is four decades lower than that of the HMXRB pulsar Vela X-1. The noise strength is only a factor of 5 greater than that of the low mass X-ray binary pulsar (LMXRB) 4U 1626-67. The low level of the timing noise and the very stable spin down rate of 4U 1907+09 makes this source unique among the HMXRBs, providing another example, in addition to 4U 1626-67, of long term quiet spin down from an accreting source. These examples show that the extended quiet spin down episodes observed in the anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) pulsars 1RXS J170849.0-400910 and 1E 2259+586 do not necessarly imply that these sources are not accreting pulsars., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

Abstract: Neutron stars may be surrounded by fallback disks formed from supernova core collapse. If the disk circumscribes the light cylinder, the neutron star will be an active radio pulsar spinning down under the propeller spin-down torque applied by the disk as well as the usual magnetic dipole radiation torque. Evolution across the P- diagram is very rapid when pulsar spin-down is dominated by the propeller torque. This explains the distribution of pulsars in the P- diagram.

Abstract: We have investigated the stability of the pulse frequency second derivatives ($\ddot \nu $) of PSR 0823+26, PSR 1706-16, PSR 1749-28, PSR 2021+51 which show significant quadratic trends in their pulse frequency histories in order to determine whether the observed second derivatives are secular or they arise as part of noise processes. We have used TOA data extending to more than three decades which are the longest time spans ever taken into account in pulse timing analyses. We investigated the stability of pulse frequency second derivative in the framework of low resolution noise power spectra (Deeter 1984) estimated from the residuals of pulse frequency and TOA data. We have found that the $\ddot \nu $ terms of these sources arise from the red torque noise in the fluctuations of pulse frequency derivatives which may originate from the external torques from the magnetosphere of pulsar.

46. Planetary nebulae in open clusters and the mass boundary between the progenitors of white dwarfs and neutron stars

Abstract: The mass boundary between progenitors of white dwarfs and neutron stars is discussed. We propose obtaining the upper mass limit of WD progenitors from PNe in open clusters. The maximum mass on the main sequence for the OC member stars should be a good estimate of the WD progenitor star's mass in view of the negligible lifetime of PNe. This is a direct and more reliable way for the estimation of the mass boundary between progenitors of WDs and NSs, not having the uncertainties in the progenitor masses found by studying WDs in OCs. Observational and theoretical studies indicate preliminary values about 6–8M ⊙ for the mass boundary between WDs and NSs. PN-OC associations are also necessary to study the connections between masses, chemical abundances and other properties of the PNe, their nuclear stars and the progenitors of these objects on the main sequence. We discuss the association of PNe with OCs and globular clusters. One new association of a PN with GC is found (GC M 15 and PN PK 65–27.2).

Abstract: Model dispersion relations are introduced to explore power spectra of the normal-branch (NB) and horizontal-branch (HB) quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs; for reviews see Van der Klis (1989)[ARA&A, 27, 517], (1992) [Proc. of NATO ASI X-Ray Binaries and Recycled Pulsars, eds. E.P.J. Van den Heuvel & S.A. Rappaport, Kluwer, Dordrecht], (1995)[Proc. of NATO ASI The Lives of the Neutron Stars, eds. M.A. Alpar, Umit Kiziloglu, & J. van Paradijs, Kluwer, Dordrecht]) of low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) in terms of wave packets and to illustrate the presence of frequency bands around the Kepler and beat frequencies. For the NB QPOs wave packets of sound waves in a thick middle disk state, with frequencies determined by the rotation frequency, have wavelengths comparable to the size of the middle disk. For Z-sources on the HB, the wave packets result from disturbances in the inner disk induced by the neutron star magnetic field which rotates at the beat frequency with respect to the inner disk. For both the NB and the HB QPOs, we construct simple model dispersion relations, and show that the QPO peaks in the observed power spectra correspond to reasonable wavelengths and system parameters. The kilohertz QPOs, which were discovered after the original version of this paper was submitted, are also discussed as a possible realization of the Kepler and beat frequency bands. Problems of integrating the kHz and HB QPOs in a disk model are briefly noted. It is tentatively suggested that supersonic and wave propagation regions of the inner disk have complementary functions for the origin of kHz and HB QPOs respectively.

Abstract: We investigate the X-ray enhancement and the long-term evolution of the recently discovered, second "low-B magnetar" Swift J1822.3-1606 in the frame of the fallback disk model. During a soft gamma burst episode, the inner disk matter is pushed back to larger radii forming a density gradient at the inner disk. Subsequent relaxation of the inner disk could account for the observed X-ray enhancement light curve of Swift J1822.3-1606. We obtain model fits to the X-ray data with basic disk parameters similar to those employed to explain the X-ray outburst light curves of other AXPs and SGRs. The long period (8.4 s) of the neutron star can be reached by the effect of the disk torques in the long-term accretion phase (1-3 x 10^5 yrs). The currently ongoing X-ray enhancement could be due to a transient accretion epoch, or the source could still be in the accretion phase in quiescence. Considering these different possibilities, we determine the model curves that could represent the long-term rotational and the X-ray luminosity evolution of Swift J1822.3-1606, which constrain the strength of the magnetic dipole field to the range of 1-2 x 10^12 G on the surface of the neutron star., 21 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: The presence of matter with angular momentum, in the form of a fallback disk around a young isolated neutron star will determine its evolution. This leads to an understanding of many properties of different classes of young neutron stars, in particular a natural explanation for the period clustering of AXPs, SGRs and XDINs. The spindown or spinup properties of a neutron star are determined by the dipole component of the magnetic field. The natural possibility that magnetars and other neutron stars may have different strengths of the dipole and higher multipole components of the magnetic field is now actually required by observations on the spindown rates of some magnetars. This talk gives a broad overview and some applications of the fallback disk model to particular neutron stars. Salient points are: (i) A fallback disk has already been observed around the AXP 4U 0142+61 some years ago. (ii) The low observed spindown rate of the SGR 0418+5729 provides direct evidence that the dipole component of the field is in the $10^{12} G$ range. All properties of the SGR 0418+5729 at its present age can be explained by spindown under torques from a fallback disk. (iii) The anomalous braking index of PSR J1734-3333 can also be explained by the fallback disk model which gives the luminosity, period, period derivative and the period second derivative at the present age. (iv) These and all applications to a variety of other sources employ the same disk physics and evolution, differing only in the initial conditions of the disk., 7 pages, 2 figures.
