Valley photonic crystals provide efficient designs for the routing of light through channels in extremely compact geometries. The topological origin of the robust transport and the specific geometries under which it can take place have been questioned in recent works. In this article, we introduce a design for valley photonic crystals with richer arrangement possibilities than the standard valley photonic crystals based on two holes of different sizes in the unit cell. Our approach is based on the permutation of three sets of rhombi in an hexagonal lattice to investigate the interplay between Berry curvature, valley Chern number and chirality of interfaces to achieve robust edge-modes propagation along domain walls. We study three types of interfaces with different symmetries: the non-chiral interface with glide-mirror symmetry commonly used in honeycomb-type valley crystals, and two chiral interfaces with or without inversion symmetry of the adjacent bulk lattices. In the latter case, no valley topology is expected. We show that for the three families, edges preserving the shape of the interface through 120{\deg} sharp corners can sustain edge-modes with comparable robustness. Moreover, interfaces with glide-mirror symmetry offer promising performances in circuits with more exotic configurations, like 60{\deg} and 90{\deg} corners or arbitrary curves in which valley preservation is not guaranteed. We present the results of an optical link to a corner cube on board a tethered balloon at 300 m altitude including a Tip/Tilt compensation for the balloon tracking. Our experiment measures the carrier phase of a 1542 nm laser, which is the useful signal for frequency comparison of distant clocks. An active phase noise compensation of the carrier is implemented, demonstrating a fractional frequency stability of 8x10-19 after 16 s averaging, which slightly (factor ~3) improves on best previous links via an airborne platform. Important applications of single-particle tracking (SPT) aim at deciphering the diffusion properties of single fluorescent nanoparticles immersed in heterogeneous environments, such as multi-cellular biological tissues. To maximize the particle localization precision in such complex environments, high numerical aperture objectives are often required, which intrinsically restrict depth-of-focus (DOF) to less than a micrometer and impedes recording long trajectories when particles escape the plane of focus. In this work, we show that a simple binary phase mask can work with the spherical aberration inevitably induced by thick sample inhomogeneities, to extend the DOF of a single-molecule fluorescence microscope over more than 4 {\mu}m. The effect of point-spread-function (PSF) engineering over spherical aberration regularizes inhomogeneities of the PSF along the optical axis by restricting it to a narrow distribution. This allows the use of a single fitting function (i.e. Gaussian function) to localize single emitters over the whole extended DOF. Application of this simple approach on diffusing nanoparticles demonstrate that SPT trajectories can be recorded on significantly longer times., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures

In this work, we use valley-topological triangular resonators coupled to an input waveguide to evaluate the quality of the topological protection. To that purpose, we first analyze via numerical simulations the existence of backward scattering at cavity corners or transmission with pseudo-spin conversion at the splitter between the input waveguide and the cavity. We evidence that a breakdown of topological protection takes place, in particular at sharp corners, which results in transmission minima and split-resonances, otherwise non-existent. In order to evaluate the small coupling coefficients associated to this breakdown, a phenomenological model based on an exact parameterization of scattering matrices at splitters and corners of the resonators is then introduced. By comparison with the numerical simulations, we are able to quantify the loss of topological protection at sharp bends and splitters. Finally, we use the obtained set of phenomenological parameters to compare the predictions of the phenomenological model with full numerical simulations for fractal-inspired cavities based on the Sierpi\'nski triangle construction. We show that the agreement is overall good, but shows more differences for the cavity composed of the smallest triangles. Our results suggest that even in a system exempt of geometrical and structural defects, topological protection is not complete at corners, sharp bends and splitters. However, simpler but predictive calculations can be realized with a phenomenological approach, allowing simulations of very large devices beyond the reach of standard simulation methods, which is crucial to design photonic devices which gather compactness and low losses through topological conduction of electromagnetic waves., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, one supplementary informations file

Structured illumination in Single Molecule Localization Microscopy provides new information on the position of molecules and thus improves the localization precision compared to standard localization methods. Here, we used a time-shifted sinusoidal excitation pattern to modulate the fluorescence signal of the molecules whose position information is carried by the phase and recovered by synchronous demodulation. We designed two flexible fast demodulation systems located upstream of the camera, allowing us to overcome the limiting camera acquisition frequency and thus to maximize the collection of photons in the demodulation process. The temporally modulated fluorescence signal was then sampled synchronously on the same image, repeatedly during acquisition. This microscopy, called ModLoc, allows to experimentally improve the localization precision by a factor of 2.4 in one direction, compared to classical Gaussian fitting methods. A temporal study and an experimental demonstration both show that the short lifetimes of the molecules in blinking regimes impose a modulation frequency in the kilohertz range, which is beyond the reach of current cameras. A demodulation system operating at these frequencies would thus be necessary to take full advantage of this new localization approach.

We study a one-dimensional array of bosons with infinite-range interactions mediated by a laser-driven dissipative optical cavity. The cavity-mediated infinite-range interactions open up a new pathway to fermionization, hitherto only known for dipolar bosons due to their long-range interactions. In parameter ranges attainable in state-of-the-art experiments, we systematically compare observables for bosons and fermions with infinite-range interactions. At large enough laser pump power, many observables, including density distributions in real and momentum space, correlation functions, eigenvalues of the one-body density matrix, and superradiance order parameter, become identical for bosons and fermions. We map out the emergence of this cavity-induced fermionization as a function of pump power and contact interactions. Timescale comparison between optical atomic clocks over ground-to-space and terrestrial free-space laser links will have enormous benefits for fundamental and applied science, from measurements of fundamental constants and searches for dark matter, to geophysics and environmental monitoring. However, turbulence in the atmosphere creates phase noise on the laser signal, greatly degrading the precision of the measurements, and also induces scintillation and beam wander which cause periodic deep fades and loss of signal. We demonstrate phase stabilized optical frequency transfer over a 265 m horizontal point-to-point free-space link between optical terminals with active tip-tilt mirrors to suppress beam wander, in a compact, human-portable set-up. A phase stabilized 715 m underground optical fiber link between the two terminals is used to measure the performance of the free-space link. The active optics terminals enabled continuous, coherent transmission over periods of up to an hour. We achieve an 80 dB suppression of atmospheric phase noise to $3\times10^{-6}$ rad$^{2}$Hz$^{-1}$ at 1 Hz, and an ultimate fractional frequency stability of $1.6\times10^{-19}$ after 40 s of integration. At high frequency this performance is limited by the residual atmospheric noise after compensation and the frequency noise of the laser seen through the unequal delays of the free space and fiber links. Our long term stability is limited by the thermal shielding of the phase stabilization system. We achieve residual instabilities below those of the best optical atomic clocks, ensuring clock-limited frequency comparison over turbulent free-space links., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures. We propose a straightforward sample-based technique to calibrate the axial detection in 3D single molecule localization microscopy (SMLM). Using microspheres coated with fluorescent molecules, the calibration curves of PSF-shaping- or intensity-based measurements can be obtained for any required depth range from a few hundreds of nanometers to several tens of microns. We study theoretically the two-center interferences occurring in high harmonic generation from diatomic molecules. By solving the time-dependent Schroedinger equation, either numerically or with the molecular strong-field approximation, we show that the electron dynamics results in a strong spectral smoothing of the interference, depending on the value and sign of the driving laser field at recombination. Strikingly, the associated phase-jumps are in opposite directions for the short and long trajectories. In these conditions, the harmonic emission is not simply proportional to the recombination dipole any more. This has important consequences in high harmonic spectroscopy, e.g., for accessing the molecular-frame recombination dipole in amplitude and phase.

We investigate theoretically and numerically the coupling between elastic and localized surface plasmon modes in a system of gold nanocylinders separated from a thin gold film by a dielectric spacer of few nanometers thickness. That system supports plasmon modes confined in between the bottom of the nanocylinder and the top of the gold film, which arise from the formation of interference patterns by short-wavelength metal-insulator-metal propagating plasmon. First we present the plasmonic properties of the system though computer-simulated extinction spectra and field maps associated to the different optical modes. Next a simple analytical model is introduced, which allows to correctly reproduce the shape and wavelengths of the plasmon modes. This model is used to investigate the efficiency of the coupling between an elastic deformation and the plasmonic modes. In the last part of the paper, we present the full numerical simulations of the phononic properties of the system, and then compute the acousto-plasmonic coupling between the different plasmon modes and five acoustic modes of very different shape. The efficiency of the coupling is assessed first by evaluating the modulation of the resonance wavelength, which allows comparison with the analytical model, and finally in term of time-modulation of the transmission spectra on the full visible range, computed for realistic values of the deformation of the nanoparticle., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

In this paper, we describe the design and the main performances of the PHARAO laser source flight model. PHARAO is a laser cooled cesium clock specially designed for operation in space and the laser source is one of the main sub-systems. The flight model presented in this work is the first remote-controlled laser system designed for spaceborne cold atom manipulation. The main challenges arise from mechanical compatibility with space constraints, which impose a high level of compactness, a low electric power consumption, a wide range of operating temperature and a vacuum environment. We describe the main functions of the laser source and give an overview of the main technologies developed for this instrument. We present some results of the qualification process. In this article, we present a numerical study of the optical properties of a metal nanowire interacting with a localized cavity in a two dimensional photonic crystal. The nature of the modes, their wavelength and width are investigated as a function of the particle radius. It is shown in particular that a particle with diameter about the lattice constant presents very narrow resonances corresponding to hybrid photonic-plasmonic modes, where increased lifetime is attributed to the decrease of the radiative losses by interaction with the photonic crystal. These results open interesting applications in areas where narrow plasmonic resonances are required, as in LSP-resonance based biosensing.

Evanescent light excitation is widely used in super-resolution fluorescence microscopy to confine light and reduce background noise. Herein we propose a method of exploiting evanescent light in the context of emission. When a fluorophore is located in close proximity to a medium with a higher refractive index, its near-field component is converted into light that propagates beyond the critical angle. This so-called Supercritical Angle Fluorescence (SAF) can be captured using a hig-NA objective and used to determine the axial position of the fluorophore with nanometer precision. We introduce a new technique for 3D nanoscopy that combines direct STochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy (dSTORM) imaging with dedicated detection of SAF emission. We demonstrate that our approach of a Direct Optical Nanoscopy with Axially Localized Detection (DONALD) yields a typical isotropic 3D localization precision of 20 nm.

We demonstrate sub-wavelength sectioning on biological samples with a conventional confocal microscope. This optical sectioning is achieved by the phenomenon of supercritical angle fuorescence, wherein only a fluorophore next to the interface of a refractive index discontinuity can emit propagating components of radiation into the so-called forbidden angles. The simplicity of this technique allows it to be integrated with a high numerical aperture confocal scanning microscope by only a simple modification on the detection channel. We present the complete characterization of a laser setup for rubidium cooling dedicated to space applications. The experimental setup is realized with commercial off-the-shelf fiber components suitable for space applications. By frequency doubling two fiber laser diodes at 1560 nm, we produce the two optical frequencies at 780 nm required for atomic cooling of $^{87}$Rb. The first laser is locked on saturated absorption signal and long term frequency drift has been canceled using a digital integrator. The optical frequency of the second laser is controlled relatively to the first one by a frequency comparison method. A full characterization of the setup, including frequency stability evaluation and frequency noise measurement has been performed. Although fluorescence is the prevailing labeling technique in biosensing applications, sensitivity improvement is still a striving challenge. We show that coating standard microscope slides with nanoroughened silver films provides a high fluorescence signal enhancement due to plasmonic interactions. As a proof of concept, we applied these films with tailored plasmonic properties to DNA microarrays. Using common optical scanning devices, we achieved signal amplifications by more than 40-fold.

We introduce a full field fluorescence imaging technique with axial confinement of about 100 nm at the sample/substrate interface. Contrary to standard surface imaging techniques, this confinement is obtained through emission filtering. This technique is based on supercritical emission selectivity. It can be implemented on any epifluorescence microscope with a commercial high numerical aperture objective and offers a real time surface imaging capability. This technique is of particular interest for live cell membrane and adhesion studies. Using HEK cells, we show that one can observe simultaneously the surface and in-depth cell phenomena.

In this paper, we report a new scheme to amplify a microwave signal carried on a laser light at $\lambda$=852nm. The amplification is done via a semiconductor tapered amplifier and this scheme is used to drive stimulated Raman transitions in an atom interferometer. Sideband generation in the amplifier, due to self-phase and amplitude modulation, is investigated and characterized. We also demonstrate that the amplifier does not induce any significant phase-noise on the beating signal. Finally, the degradation of the performances of the interferometer due to the amplification process is shown to be negligible.

We present a numerical study and analytical model of the optical near-field diffracted in the vicinity of subwavelength grooves milled in silver surfaces. The Green's tensor approach permits computation of the phase and amplitude dependence of the diffracted wave as a function of the groove geometry. It is shown that the field diffracted along the interface by the groove is equivalent to replacing the groove by an oscillating dipolar line source. An analytic expression is derived from the Green's function formalism, that reproduces well the asymptotic surface plasmon polariton (SPP) wave as well as the transient surface wave in the near-zone close to the groove. The agreement between this model and the full simulation is very good, showing that the transient "near-zone" regime does not depend on the precise shape of the groove. Finally, it is shown that a composite diffractive evanescent wave model that includes the asymptotic SPP can describe the wavelength evolution in this transient near-zone. Such a semi-analytical model may be useful for the design and optimization of more elaborate photonic circuits whose behavior in large part will be controlled by surface waves., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures
