Natural ingredients have been used in skincare products for thousands of years. The current focus is on novel natural bioactivities that shield the skin from UV rays and free radicals, among other damaging elements, while enhancing skin health. Free radicals significantly contribute to skin damage and hasten ageing by interfering with defence and restorative processes. Plants contain natural chemicals that can scavenge free radicals and have antioxidant capabilities. Plant materials are becoming increasingly popular as natural antioxidants related to the expanding interest in plant chemistry. This review focuses on the significance of medicinal plants in skin health and ageing and their potential as a source of antioxidant substances such as vitamins, polyphenols, stilbenes, flavonoids, and methylxanthines. This chapter reports the ethnomedicinal uses, the phytochemistry, and the antiproliferative potential of Raphia vinifera Palisot de Beauvois (Arecaceae). It is a perennial plant found in several countries of West and Central Africa. Its different parts are used in traditional or folk medicine for the realization of protection rituals for children or against witchcraft. In addition, the decoction of its fruit is consumed for the treatment of gonococcal and other urinary tract infections. The extracts obtained from this part of R. vinifera are rich in several phytoconstituents including alkaloids, saponins, tannins, flavonoids, and glycosides. Several products belonging to these classes of secondary metabolites have been isolated from extracts of the mesocarp of its fruit. These are mainly (25R)-spirost-5-ene-3β, 22β-3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl(1⟶2)-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (1), raphvinin 3 (4), diosgenin (5), deltonin (7) and progenin III (8), mostly belonging to the saponin class. The methanol extract of this plant and its derived compounds showed interesting antiproliferative activities, both on drug sensitive human and animal cancer cell lines and on those with multidrug-resistant phenotypes. Argemone ochroleuca Sweet is an alien invasive weed dominating most cultivated lands, however, the phytochemicals present in this plant and the effects of these on the germination and growth of economically important crops such as maize are not well-documented. The objective of the study was to characterize the phytochemistry of the shoots and roots of A. ochroleuca and determine whether the extracts could inhibit the germination of maize seeds. The shoots and roots of A. ochroleuca were extracted in water, hexane, and acetone. Ten maize seeds were used in the germination bioassay. A phytochemical analysis was conducted using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The effects of the A. ochroleuca water, hexane, or acetone extracts on maize seed germination were concentration and plant-part dependent. The highest reduction was recorded from the water extract with 82%. Identified compounds with high percentages in A. ochroleuca were 9,12-octadecadienoic acid (Z,Z) and 9,12,15-octadecatrienoic acid, (Z,Z,Z)-. The present study indicated that A. ochroleuca extracts suppress the germination of maize seeds, likely due to the presence of both the identified and potentially unidentified phytochemicals that were not detected by the selected method. In this study, silver nanostructures (AgNSs) were obtained using aqueous extracts of elecampane (Inula viscosa) and blueberry (Vaccinium arctostaphylos L.). The synthesized AgNSs were characterized using UV–visible spectrophotometers, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The optimization studies revealed that pH and the extract/AgNO3 ratio played significant roles in the morphology and size of the AgNSs, while temperature did not show any significant role. Both the blueberry and elecampane extracts resulted in a mixture of spherical and aspherical silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). In contrast, utilization of a relatively high extract/AgNO3 ratio accompanied by an extended incubation period (i.e., 10 days) caused the formation of larger spherical (e.g., up to micron-sized) and large 1D AgNPs for the blueberry and elecampane extracts, respectively. The major difference related to the crystal structures was obtained, as the blueberry extracts resulted in face-centric cubic crystals, and the elecampane extracts allowed the formation of hexagonally close-packed (hcp) crystalline structures. The AgNPs were tested for their antibacterial activities using gram (−) and gram (+) bacterial species, where the elecampane-synthesized AgNPs possessed higher antibacterial activity that can be attributed to the hcp crystalline structure of the AgNPs. Sodium nitrite (NaNO2) is a widely used food ingredient, although excessive concentrations can pose potential health risks. In the present study, we evaluated the deterioration effects of NaNO2 additives on hematology, metabolic profile, liver function, and kidney function of male Wistar rats. We further explored the therapeutic potential of supplementation with S. costus root ethanolic extract (SCREE) to improve NaNO2-induced hepatorenal toxicity. In this regard, 65 adult male rats were divided into eight groups; Group 1: control, Groups 2, 3, and 4 received SCREE in 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg body weight, respectively, Group 5: NaNO2 (6.5 mg/kg body weight), Groups 6, 7 and 8 received NaNO2 (6.5 mg/kg body weight) in combination with SCREE (200, 400, and 600 mg/kg body weight), respectively. Our results revealed that the NaNO2-treated group shows a significant change in deterioration in body and organ weights, hematological parameters, lipid profile, and hepatorenal dysfunction, as well as immunohistochemical and histopathological alterations. Furthermore, the NaNO2-treated group demonstrated a considerable increase in the expression of TNF-α cytokine and tumor suppressor gene P53 in the kidney and liver, while a significant reduction was detected in the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-4 and the apoptosis suppressor gene BCL-2, compared to the control group. Interestingly, SCREE administration demonstrated the ability to significantly alleviate the toxic effects of NaNO2 and improve liver function in a dose-dependent manner, including hematological parameters, lipid profile, and modulation of histopathological architecture. Additionally, SCREE exhibited the ability to modulate the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines and apoptotic genes in the liver and kidney. The phytochemical analysis revealed a wide set of primary metabolites in SCREE, including phenolics, flavonoids, vitamins, alkaloids, saponins and tannins, while the untargeted UPLC/T-TOF-MS/MS analysis identified 183 metabolites in both positive and negative ionization modes. Together, our findings establish the potential of SCREE in mitigating the toxic effects of NaNO2 by modulating metabolic, inflammatory, and apoptosis. Tanacetum vulgare is a perennial plant growing wild along roadsides, pastures, and agricultural fields. Its prevalence is due to several factors: good climatic adaptability, high self-seeding potential, phenotypic plasticity, multiplying via underground rhizomes and its allelochemicals, which influence the seed germination, root development and the overall vegetation of the surrounding plants. The phytochemistry of tansy extracts and their allelopathic activity on the seed germination and growth of garden pepper cress (Lepidium sativum L.) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) were investigated. The major volatile compounds, 1,8-cineole, camphor and borneol were determined in tansy flower extracts. The leaf extracts contained appreciable amounts of 1,8-cineole and borneol. Feruloylquinic, (di)ferulic and dehydrocaffeoyl-5-caffeoylquinic acids, acacetin, ludovicin C and tanacetin were determined both in leaf and inflorescence extracts. Root extracts contained minor quantities of some terpenoids and polyphenols. Extracts of T. vulgare's aerial parts showed strong allelopathic effects on model plants. The flower and leaf water extracts inhibited lettuce and pepper cress seed germination and growth the most. According to the fractions, the acidic solution had the strongest effect, followed by neutral and alkaline solutions. At the highest relative concentrations of 0.5 and 1.0 tansy leaf acidic fraction, lettuce seed germination and growth decreased by 89.93% (from 35.07 ± 4.79 to 3.53 ± 2.10 mm) and by 98.46% (from 35.07 ± 4.79 to 0.57 ± 0.98 mm) compared to the control, respectively. Tansy root extracts showed weak effects. Our results demonstrated that the allelopathic inhibitory potential of tansy extracts was higher on garden pepper cress than on lettuce. This narrative review aims to examine the therapeutic potential and mechanism of action of plant extracts in preventing and treating alopecia (baldness). We searched and selected research papers on plant extracts related to hair loss, hair growth, or hair regrowth, and comprehensively compared the therapeutic efficacies, phytochemical components, and modulatory targets of plant extracts. These studies showed that various plant extracts increased the survival and proliferation of dermal papilla cells in vitro, enhanced cell proliferation and hair growth in hair follicles ex vivo, and promoted hair growth or regrowth in animal models in vivo. The hair growth-promoting efficacy of several plant extracts was verified in clinical trials. Some phenolic compounds, terpenes and terpenoids, sulfur-containing compounds, and fatty acids were identified as active compounds contained in plant extracts. The pharmacological effects of plant extracts and their active compounds were associated with the promotion of cell survival, cell proliferation, or cell cycle progression, and the upregulation of several growth factors, such as IGF-1, VEGF, HGF, and KGF (FGF-7), leading to the induction and extension of the anagen phase in the hair cycle. Those effects were also associated with the alleviation of oxidative stress, inflammatory response, cellular senescence, or apoptosis, and the downregulation of male hormones and their receptors, preventing the entry into the telogen phase in the hair cycle. Several active plant extracts and phytochemicals stimulated the signaling pathways mediated by protein kinase B (PKB, also called AKT), extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK), Wingless and Int-1 (WNT), or sonic hedgehog (SHH), while suppressing other cell signaling pathways mediated by transforming growth factor (TGF)-β or bone morphogenetic protein (BMP). Thus, well-selected plant extracts and their active compounds can have beneficial effects on hair health. It is proposed that the discovery of phytochemicals targeting the aforementioned cellular events and cell signaling pathways will facilitate the development of new targeted therapies for alopecia. Berberis vulgaris L. (Berberidaceae) is a shrub that has been widely used in European folk medicine as an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agent. The purpose of our study was to elucidate the mechanisms of the chemopreventive action of the plant's methanolic root extract (BVR) against colon cancer cells. Studies were conducted in human colon adenocarcinoma cell lines (LS180 and HT-29) and control colon epithelial CCD841 CoN cells. According to the MTT assay, after 48 h of cell exposure, the IC50 values were as follows: 4.3, 46.1, and 50.2 µg/mL for the LS180, HT-29, and CCD841 CoN cells, respectively, showing the greater sensitivity of the cancer cells to BVR. The Cell Death Detection ELISAPLUS kit demonstrated that BVR induced programmed cell death only against HT-29 cells. Nuclear double staining revealed the great proapoptotic BVR properties in HT-29 cells and subtle effect in LS180 cells. RT-qPCR with the relative quantification method showed significant changes in the expression of genes related to apoptosis in both the LS180 and HT-29 cells. The genes BCL2L1 (126.86–421.43%), BCL2L2 (240–286.02%), CASP3 (177.19–247.83%), and CASP9 (157.99–243.75%) had a significantly elevated expression, while BCL2 (25–52.03%) had a reduced expression compared to the untreated control. Furthermore, in a panel of antioxidant tests, BVR showed positive effects (63.93 ± 0.01, 122.92 ± 0.01, and 220.29 ± 0.02 mg Trolox equivalents (TE)/g in the DPPH•, ABTS•+, and ORAC assays, respectively). In the lipoxygenase (LOX) inhibition test, BVR revealed 62.60 ± 0.87% of enzyme inhibition. The chemical composition of BVR was determined using a UHPLC-UV-CAD-MS/MS analysis and confirmed the presence of several known alkaloids, including berberine, as well as other alkaloids and two derivatives of hydroxycinnamic acid (ferulic and sinapic acid hexosides). The results are very promising and encourage the use of BVR as a comprehensive chemopreventive agent (anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and pro-apoptotic) in colorectal cancer, and were widely discussed alongside data from the literature. Background: The phytochemical evaluation of the ethanolic extract of the plant, Gymnostachyum febrifugum Benth. (Acanthaceae family) was carried out to evaluate its therapeutic potential. Despite being part of traditional medicine, not much research has been done on the plant. Materials and Methods: The study aimed to understand the plant's phytochemistry and evaluate its therapeutic potential. For this purpose, DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, Total Antioxidant Assay, MTT Assay, and HR-LCMS techniques were employed. Results: Major secondary metabolites in the ethanolic extract were flavonoids, tannins, phenolics, and steroids. The free radical scavenging capacity of the ethanolic extract of the plant was evaluated using four different methods, proving the plant to possess high antioxidant properties. Hence, the hepatoprotective potential of ethanolic extract was evaluated using an MTT assay on Hep G2 cells induced with hepatotoxicity using Acetaminophen. When treated with ethanolic extract, the cell viability was found to be 85.32% at 12.5 µg/mL concentration. IC50 for ethanolic extract was attained at 75.77 µg/mL. Also, chemical characterization of the extract was performed using the HR-LCMS technique. Around 64 compounds were obtained in chromatogram using positive ESI mode, of which 24 are unknown and 40 are known compounds. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) contributes to more than 80% of all primary cancers globally and ranks fourth in cancer‐related deaths, due to the lack of an effective, definite therapeutic drug. Coleus vettiveroides (CV) has been used in Indian traditional medicine to treat diabetes, liver ailments, skin diseases, leukoderma, and leprosy. This study investigates the anticancer effect of CV ethanolic root extract in HepG2 cells. HepG2 cells were treated with CV extract, and its cytotoxicity was analyzed by MTT assay. AO/EB staining, propidium iodide staining, DCFH‐DA assay, phalloidine staining, flow cytometry, and qPCR studies were performed for ROS expression, apoptosis and cell cycle analysis. The phytochemical analysis confirmed the presence of quercetin and galangin in CV root extract. The results showed that CV inhibited the proliferation of HepG2 cells, with altered cellular and nuclear morphology. CV was also found to increase intracellular ROS levels and oxidative stress markers in HepG2 cells. CV significantly altered the actin microfilament distribution in HepG2 cells and caused cell cycle arrest at the sub G0‐G1 phase. CV also induced mitochondria‐mediated apoptosis, as evidenced by increased expression of p53, Bax, cytochrome C, Apaf‐1, PARP, caspase‐3 and caspase‐9, and downregulated Bcl‐2 expression. Therefore, CV exerts its anticancer effect by inducing mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, cytoskeletal disorganization, cell cycle arrest, and mitochondria‐mediated apoptosis, and it could be a potent therapeutic option for HCC. Gardenia is a genus of about 140 different plant species of the Rubiaceae family. Previous studies have shown that terpenes and phenolics extracted from Gardenia sp. showed numerous potential bioactivities. In this study, the chemical constituents of G. angkorensis, their cytotoxic and αglucosidase inhibition activities were investigated. The phytochemical investigation of the dichloromethane extract of G. angkorensis leaves growing in Vietnam has led to the isolation of 19α-hydroxyoleanolic acid 3-Ο-β-D-glucuronopyranoside (1), chikusetsusaponin IVa, 3 β, 16 β, 21 β, 23, 24-pentahydroxy urs-12,18,20-trien-28-oic acid-γ-lactone (3), linalool glucoside and linalyl 6-O-α-L-arabinopyranosyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (5). The identities of the compounds were based on the analysis of their NMR data. Compound 1 showed moderate inhibition against αglucosidase with IC50 value of 58.01 ± 4.45 µM while compounds 3 (IC50 186.60 ± 4.68 µM) and 5 (IC50 239.53 ± 7.22 µM) exhibited weak cytotoxicity against the KB cell line and Hep G2 cell line (IC50 values 180.80 ± 7.16 µM, 253.95 ± 8.14 µM). Mirabilis jalapa L. has been used traditionally in herbal medicine for various purposes, including as a laxative, diuretic, and treatment of inflammations and fever, as it contains various phytochemical compounds. The present study aims to analyze the phytochemical and lipidic profiles of M. jalapa and characterize its methanol seed extract. It also investigates the antioxidant activity, total protein and phenol contents, and anti-inflammatory, antihemolytic, cytotoxic, and antioxidant activities using established methods. The phytochemical profile of the plant was determined with LC-MS and FTIR. Results of the study revealed that the methanol seed extract showed high anti-inflammatory (92.7%) and antioxidant (59.97%) potentials, with moderate antihemolytic (29.3%) activity. Further analysis of the extract showed antiproliferative activity against various cancer cell lines, namely, Prostate DU-145 (49.3%), Lung cancer HCC95 (45.4%), Breast Cancers MDA-MB-231 (38.2%) and 600MPE (24.1%). The methanol seed extract of M. jalapa contains significant quantities of various phytochemicals that may have been responsible for its antiproliferative, antioxidant, anti-hemolytic, and anti-inflammatory properties. The elimination of brownish pigments from plant protein extracts has been a challenge in plant biochemistry studies. Although numerous approaches have been developed to reduce pigments for enzyme assays, none has been able to completely remove pigments from plant protein extracts for biochemical studies. A simple and effective protocol was developed to completely remove pigments from plant protein extracts. Proteins were extracted from red anthocyanin-rich transgenic and greenish wild-type tobacco cells cultured on agar-solidified Murashige and Skoog medium. Protein extracts from these cells were brownish or dark due to the pigments. Four approaches were comparatively tested to show that the diethylaminoethyl (DEAE)-Sephadex anion exchange gel column was effective in completely removing pigments to obtain transparent pigment-free protein extracts. A Millipore Amicon® Ultra 10K cut-off filter unit was used to effectively desalt proteins. Moreover, the removal of pigments significantly improved the measurement accuracy of total soluble proteins. Furthermore, enzymatic assays using catechol as a substrate coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography analysis demonstrated that the pigment-free proteins not only showed polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity but also enhanced the catalytic activity of PPO. Taken together, this protocol is effective for extracting pigment-free plant proteins for plant biochemistry studies. A simple and effective protocol was successfully developed to not only completely and effectively remove anthocyanin and polyphenolics-derived quinone pigments from plant protein extracts but also to decrease the effects of pigments on the measurement accuracy of total soluble proteins. An urgent demand for natural compound alternatives to conventional medications has arisen due to global health challenges, such as drug resistance and the adverse effects associated with synthetic drugs. Plant extracts are considered an alternative due to their favorable safety profiles and potential for reducing side effects. Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is a valuable plant resource and a potential candidate for the development of pharmaceutical medications. A single pure compound or a combination of compounds exhibits exceptional medicinal properties, including antiviral activity against both DNA and RNA viruses, antibacterial effects against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, antifungal properties, antioxidant activity, antidiabetic potential, neuroprotective qualities, and anticancer properties. The plant contains various phytochemical constituents, which mostly consist of linalool, eucalyptol, estragole, and eugenol. For centuries, community and traditional healers across the globe have employed O. basilicum L. to treat a wide range of ailments, including flu, fever, colds, as well as issues pertaining to digestion, reproduction, and respiration. In addition, the current research presented underscores the significant potential of O. basilicum-related nanotechnology applications in addressing diverse challenges and advancing numerous fields. Objective: Salacca wallichiana Mart. is a prominent fruit-bearing tree distributed in Southeast Asia and used in treating many diseases and folk remedies. Thus far, only phytochemical composition-related research has been carried out on this plant, while the other bioactivities retarding its applicability in orthodox medicine have been ignored. Screening for the various bioeffects is needed to verify the authenticity of the medicinal activities of plants. Materials and Methods: Following Ciulei separation, the phytochemical contents of the fruit peel extracts were determined. The antioxidant effect was evaluated by performing the free radical scavenging and potassium ferricyanide-reducing antioxidant power assays. Agar diffusion and broth dilution methods were used to ascertain the antibacterial capacity, and then the minimal inhibitory concentration (MICs) and MBCs were calculated. Results: The results illustrated a robust free radical scavenging but a weak reducing activity. The MIC against Gram-positive bacteria was <4 mg/mL. The phytochemical composition included tannins and flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, organic acids, and reducing sugars. Conclusion: The extracts of S. wallichiana peels demonstrated a potential antioxidant activity along with lethality against Grampositive bacteria, which was attributed to the diversity in the contents of secondary metabolites. Plants are an important source of active compounds with numerous therapeutic benefits. Nowadays, plant extracts have attracted an increased attention as candidates in the prevention and treatment of various diseases, including cancer. Galium verum L. is considered an effective remedy due to its extensive traditional use, thus the investigation of its anticancer potential has gained momentum. Malignant melanoma is an aggressive type of cancer with an increased incidence. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to analyze the cytotoxic effect of GvH2O extract on A375 cells. Furthermore, the safety of the extract was evaluated on HaCaT cells and the results showed that the GvH2O does not exert a cytotoxic action on keratinocytes but stimulates their proliferation at 15 - 55 μg/mL. In addition, the GvH2O extract was characterized from a phytochemical point of view. The results showed that GvH2O contains polyphenolic compounds (rutin and chlorogenic acid), possesses antioxidant activity and can be effective on Gram-positive bacteria as well as on E. coli. GvH2O extract showed a cytotoxic effect on melanoma cells, causing changes in confluence and morphology and revealing nuclear characteristics specific to apoptosis. To examine the leaves of Indigofera suffruticosa's methanolic extracts' antibacterial properties and phytochemical screening. By using the agar well diffusion technique, Many different concentrations of an extract from the Indigofera suffruticosa plant were pumped into bore wells. The average diameter of the zones of inhibition was observed after incubating the culture plates containing the extract and the test organisms at 37°C for 24 hours the antibacterial activity of extracts from Leaves of Indigofera Suffruticosa was assessed against two specific bacterial species. In the Leaves Indigofera Suffruticosa extract, the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, coumarins, triterpenoids, and carbohydrates was confirmed. According to our findings, both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria are significantly resistant to the antibacterial effects of the methanolic extract of plants produced by maceration. Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus are both susceptible to the antibiotic effects of methanolic preparations of Indigofera suffruticosa leaves. The harmful side effects associated with conventional anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals has focussed attention on medicinal plants as alternative therapeutics. However, the use of medicinal plants is predominantly based on ethnobotanical knowledge and often lacks toxicity data and safety validation. A comprehensive review of the toxicity and phytochemical properties of southern African medicinal plants used for inflammation and pain-related ailments was undertaken. Various ethnobotanical books and search engines including Science direct, Sci-Finder, Google Scholar and Scopus were used to determine which medicinal plants have been screened for toxicity. A total of 117 medicinal plants have previously been evaluated by toxicity screening. The predominant toxicity test used was the MTT reduction assay (109 species), followed by the brine shrimp lethality assay (57 species), and the XTT assay (24 species). The Ames test, which was used to screen 20 species, was the most frequently used assay to determine mutagenic properties of the plant extracts. The top five most commonly screened cell lines were Vero monkey kidney cells (46 plant extracts), RAW 264.7 macrophages (23 extracts), human breast cancer cells (MCF-7, 12) (21 extracts), mouse fibroblast (3T3) (18 extracts) and Graham cells (HEK-293) (17 extracts). Over 80% of the tested medicinal plant extracts were found to be non-toxic. Although many species have been evaluated for their toxicity properties, plant extracts are often tested using one or two assays and also lack diversity in terms of choice of cell lines used for screening. The utilization of the stems, leaves, and hulls of peanuts (Arachis hypogea) is not as popular as the seeds. This study aimed to investigate the chemical contents and pharmacological activities of A. hypogaea stems in-vitro and in-silico. This study was also completed with bibliometric analysis. The methanol extract (ME) was reextracted by ethylacetate to get ethyl acetate extract (EAE). The chemical contents of EAE were analyzed by phytochemical screening, Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (LC-MS/MS), TPC (Total Phenolic Content), and TFC (Total Flavonoid Content). In-vitro and in-silico studies evaluated antioxidant potency, toxicity, and cytotoxicity toward MCF-7 cell lines. The results showed that EAE contained terpenoids, flavonoids, alkaloids, and phenolics which were supported by LC-MS/MS data. Prangos ferulacea plant is very popular in Iran due to its unique properties in treating diseases and its special flavor. To check the characteristics of this plant, first, its extract was extracted using the maceration method. Its chemical composition was investigated using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) that p-coumaric was identified as its main compound, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed the presence of functional groups related to phenolic, flavonoid, tannins, and carboxylic acids such as caffeic acid and coumaric acid composition. Total phenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and beta-carotene were equal to 202.04 ± 5.46mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dry weight, 1,909.46 ± 13 µg quercetin (QE)/g of dry weight, and 2.91 mg/100 g. The antioxidant property of the extract was evaluated using 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2' -azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) free radical scavenging and ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP). According to the IC50 obtained for DDPH (274 ± 7.2µg/mL) and ABTS (120.45 ± 9.6µg/mL) and FRAP values [1.92 ± 0.05 µg ascorbic acid equivalent (AAE)/g of extract], this extract had high antioxidant properties. Cytotoxicity was evaluated against the survival of HT 29 cells that IC50 was 82.15 ± 0.02µg/mL. The antimicrobial property of the extract was calculated using disk diffusion agar (DDA), well diffusion agar (WDA), minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). Listeria monocytogenes has the highest sensitivity to this extract and inhibition zone based on DDA and WDA method and with an MIC and MBC equal to 16 and 128 mg/mL has the least resistance. The morphology change of L. monocytogenes strain was proved through scanning electron microscope (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The extract caused a significant reduction in the transcription of genes involved in the film formation ability of L. monocytogenes. Impatiens genus comprises several species important for agriculture and food industries, ethnobotany, and research in pharmacology, phytochemistry, biotechnology and pharmaceutical sciences. In this paper, a systematic review of ethnobotanical uses, bioactivities discovered, and research applications reported for Impatiens plants and their major bioactive constituents are presented aiming to provide an integrative comprehension of relevance of the genus in the mentioned fields and to give guidance for the further research of unexplored or poorly investigated species of this genus. Through this review, an update on this expanding area of research is also provided. According to revisited information, most of bioactive compounds are phenolics, phytosterols, triterpenoids, and peptides. There is a wide spectrum of applications investigated for Impatiens plants extracts and their bioactive metabolites, however, in most cases, they are related to their antimicrobial, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, anti-anaphylactic, and antioxidant properties. Further efforts are needed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Impatiens plants extracts and bioactive compounds to get a complete perspective of their potential applications. Cnidoscolus aconitifolius (CA) and Porophyllum ruderale (PR) are representative edible plants that are a traditional food source in Mexico. This research aimed to analyze the phytochemical composition and untargeted metabolomics analysis of CA and PR and evaluate their antiproliferative effect in vitro. The phytochemical composition (UPLC-DAD-QToF/MS-ESI) identified up to 38 polyphenols and selected organic acids that were clustered by the untargeted metabolomics in functional activities linked to indolizidines, pyridines, and organic acids. Compared with PR, CA displayed a higher reduction in the metabolic activity of human SW480 colon adenocarcinoma cells (LC50: 10.65 mg/mL), and both extracts increased the total apoptotic cells and arrested cell cycle at G0/G1 phase. PR increased mRNA Apc gene expression, whereas both extracts reduced mRNA Kras expression. Rutin/epigallocatechin gallate displayed the highest affinity to APC and K-RAS proteins in silico. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera L. Dunal) roots have been used in Ayurveda for fever, asthma, arthritis, rheumatism, inflammation, tuberculosis, mental diseases, and male sexual disorders. Phytochemical studies revealed that the plant mainly contains alkaloids (withanine, sominiferine, tropine, isopelletierine and anaferine), and steroidal lactones (withanolides A-Y, withaferine A, withasominiferols A-C, withanone and sitoindosides) as bioactive metabolites. These constituents and extracts have several pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, antitumour, antimicrobial, antivenom, and anti-parkinsonian activities. The present review presents updated information on ashwagandha based on its phytochemistry and pharmacology. The plant and many of its secondary metabolites have been found to be effective in the treatment of many human ailments. Euclea (Ebenaceae) is a genus of flowering shrubs and trees widely distributed in Africa, the Comoro Islands, and Arabia. This review aimed to evaluate the ethnobotanical uses, phytochemistry, and biological activities of the genus Euclea on available research reports. This was achieved through PubMed, Medline, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Taylor and Francis Online, Wiley Online Library which provides access to scientific and medical research. The extensive literature survey revealed that plants that belong to this genus are used as folkloric medicine for the treatment of diabetes mellitus, toothache, diarrhea, cancer, malaria, leprosy, and genital and oral diseases in the case of HIV/AIDSrelated diseases. To date, more than 40 secondary metabolites have been isolated and identified from these plants, especially from E natalensis and E. divinorum. Among these, naphthoquinones, terpenes, and flavonoids are potential secondary metabolites with profound biological activities. The purpose of this work was to study the phytochemical screening and the antioxidant activity of the hexanoic extract of the root part of Rhaponticum acaule. The qualitative phytochemical analysis of the extract showed that it is composed mainly of terpenoids. The result of the evaluation of the antioxidant activity revealed that the hexanoic extract is endowed with a very powerful antioxidant activity characterized by inhibitory concentrations of 50% of the free radical DPPH (IC50 = 12.5 µg/mL), which is better than that of ascorbic acid (IC50 = 23.5 µg/mL). Interesting photobiological properties have been demonstrated for some Cachrys species, including C. libanotis L., C. sicula L., and C. pungens Jan. The present study was designed to assess the photocytotoxic activity of Prangos ferulacea Lindl. (synonym of C. ferulacea (L.) Calest.). This plant was previously considered a Cachrys species but, at present, it is part of the Prangos genus. P. ferulacea is an orophilous plant present in the eastern Mediterranean and in western Asia. Three different extraction techniques were utilized. Obtained extracts were compared both for their phytochemical content and for their photobiological properties on human melanoma cells irradiated with UVA light. The apoptotic responses, together with the antioxidant activity, were also assessed. P. ferulacea extracts were able to affect cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner, with the sample obtained through supercritical CO2 extraction showing the highest activity (IC50 = 4.91 μg/mL). This research points out the interesting content in the photoactive compounds of this species, namely furanocoumarins, and could provide a starting point for further studies aimed at finding new photosensitizing agents useful in cancer photochemotherapy. Background: Diabetes is one of the fastest-growing health emergencies of the 21st century, placing a severe economic burden on many countries. Current management approaches have improved diabetic care, but several limitations still exist, such as decreased efficacy, adverse effects, and the high cost of treatment, particularly for developing nations. There is, therefore, a need for more cost-effective therapies for diabetes management. The evidence-based application of phytochemicals from plants in the management of diseases is gaining traction. Methodology: Various plants and plant parts have been investigated as antidiabetic agents. This review sought to collate and discuss published data on the cellular and molecular effects of medicinal plants and phytochemicals on insulin signaling pathways to better understand the current trend in using plant products in the management of diabetes. Furthermore, we explored available information on medicinal plants that consistently produced hypoglycemic effects from isolated cells to animal studies and clinical trials. Results: There is substantial literature describing the effects of a range of plant extracts on insulin action and insulin signaling, revealing a depth in knowledge of molecular detail. Our exploration also reveals effective antidiabetic actions in animal studies, and clear translational potential evidenced by clinical trials. Plants remain a vibrant source of diverse bioactive phytochemicals that are secondary metabolites protecting them from infections and predations. Magnolia champaca is reported to possess a multitude of phytochemicals. In the present study, the phytochemical constituents of the methanolic extract of Magnolia champaca leaves were analysed qualitatively and with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis was performed to identify the chemical nature of the extract and to find structurally similar compounds. Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenes, glycosides, phenols, steroids, tannins and saponins. FTIR spectroscopic analysis revealed structurally related compounds. GC-MS/MS analysis revealed the presence of 99 diverse compounds with varied biological activities, among which 1,2,4-butanetriol, n-hexadecanoic acid, cis vaccenic acid, phytol, trans longipinocarveol and caryophyllene oxide were found predominantly. Spatholobus suberectus vine stem is an important medicinal material in Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean traditional medicines. Its decoction has long been used to treat blood disorders, such as anemia and menstrual irregularity, as well as rheumatoid diseases. Previous phytochemical investigations characterized 88 compounds from S suberectus, which mainly belonged to the phenolic class, especially of the flavonoid type. Pharmacological studies showed the beneficial effects of extracts of the plant on the cardiovascular tract, which is ethnopharmacologically relevant to the plant's use in traditional medicine. Besides that, the extracts and isolated compounds also exhibited antimicrobial, anticancer, antiinflammatory, and antioxidant activities. The effects of Eremomastax speciosa leaf extract on reproductive activities was evaluated; antioxidant activities and the phytochemistry of Eremomastax speciosa were assayed using standard methods. Thirty-five matured male Wistar rats were used for the experiment and they were divided into five groups of seven rats each; groups 1 and 2 were the positive and normal controls respectively and were given Manix capsule and distilled water respectively. Groups 3, 4 and 5 were administered the ethanol extract at the doses of 400 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg, and 100 mg/kg respectively. Twelve matured female rats were used for the aphrodisiac assessment. The phytochemical screening showed the presence of Alkaloids, Tannins, Saponins, Terpenes and Flavonoids and the leaves showed a significant free scavenging activity with an IC50 value of 90 μg/ml. The result showed a dose-dependent significant (P<0.05) increase in Testosterone levels and also an increase in Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH) which was not significant when compared with the normal control. The result also showed a dose-dependent significant increase in the mount, intromission and ejaculatory frequencies while decreasing their latencies when compared with the normal control. Parquetina nigrescens species is a member of the Periploceaceae family, found majorly across countries in Africa. It has myriads of folkloric uses till date in this region. It is sometimes used in combination with other plants traditionally to treat several ailments such as inflammation, insanity, diarrhoea, skin infections, gonorrhoea, menstruation aberrations, helminthic infections, sexual disorders and some other complicated disorders. Based on our search, there is no review article to date on the authenticated biological activities of P. nigrescens, despite numerous researches. The main idea of this research is to synthesize the neodymium oxide (Nd2O3) nanoparticles with a particle size of less than 10 nm and to investigate the influence of leaf extracts of different plants. Leaf extracts of three plants namely Phyllanthus emblica, Citrus limetta, and Citrus paradisi, were used for the fabrication of Nd2O3 via the sol–gel and green synthesis methods, and the mechanism for the synthesis of neodymium oxide has been investigated. All prepared samples were subjected to UV–Visible Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X‐ray (EDX) analysis to study the optical and structural properties. The band gap of the neodymium oxide nanoparticles was observed between 4.45 and 5.26 eV. The bond length of Nd‐O for the neodymium oxide samples as‐synthesized was calculated as 2.18 and 2.24 Å by using FTIR data. Furthermore, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were calculated using TGA. XRD patterns showed the formation of cubic, monoclinic, and hexagonal structures of Nd2O3. The Nd2O3 nanoparticles were used as photocatalysts for the degradation of methylene blue under irradiation of sunlight, and the maximum percentage degradation of 74.8% was observed. Introduction: There is a high interest in creating medicines, dietary supplements, cosmetics including plant extract with antioxidant activity. For understanding whether plant extract has a maximum level of antioxidant activity it is important to know the total antioxidant activity of raw material. Objective: The main goal of study was to find out the green tea leaves total antioxidant activity. Methods: The antioxidant activity was measured by potentiometric method. Total phenolic, flavonoids, catechins and hydrocinnamic acids derivatives were quantified using Folin-Ciocalteu, aluminium chloride, vanillin and sodium molibdate methods, respectively. Results: The green tea leaves total antioxidant activity was 660.75 mmol-eqv./mres. dry weight. A significant correlation was observed between the amount of phytochemicals and antioxidant activity, which indicated its main role in antioxidant activity. Medicinal plants have been used since ancient times for human healthcare as drugs, spices, and food additives. The progress in technology and medicine observed, the last decades, has improved the quality of life and healthcare but with worrisome drawbacks. Side effects caused by synthetic drugs for instance originate sometimes irreversible health disorders. Natural substances, in contrast, are biologically and environmentally friendly. Syzygium jambos L. (Alston) also known as rose apple conveys a long history as essential traditional medicine with a broad spectrum of application in various cultures. The plant discloses a diverse group of secondary metabolites and extracts that displayed major susceptibilities towards various health concerns especially stress-related and inflammatory diseases. Despite a rich literature about the plant, the chemistry and biology of S. jambos have not been comprehensively reviewed yet. Accordingly, we present herein a literature survey of rose apple which aims to draw the chemical identity of the plant and establish a consistent discussion on the respective biological application of plant extracts and their corresponding traditional uses. Plants have phytotherapeutic properties such as antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, and their rare use remains a very interesting task in medicine. The present work addresses the new natural substances extracted from the plant Warionia saharae, and the study of their biological, antioxidant and antifungal activities in vitro. A qualitative analysis was performed by a phytochemical screening of the plants. The direct contact method in solid medium carried a study of the antifungal activity of organic and aqueous extracts against four fungal strains. After, an estimation of the antioxidant power of these extracts and that of ascorbic acid by the DPPH free radical reduction method was performed. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of reducing compounds, saponosides with a foam index of 120, tannins, alkaloids, anthocyanosides. The antifungal activity results show that the hexane extract has potent inhibitory activity against fungal strains. The MIC is 2.42 mg/ml for Penicillium sp. and 3.5 mg/ml for Fusarium sp., followed by the ethanolic extract. The antioxidant activity estimates IC50% of 6.09 µg/ml for the ethanolic extract, while the positive control, ascorbic acid, is 1.02 µg/ml. These preliminary in vitro results show that natural extracts of W. saharae Benth & Coss exhibit significant antifungal activity and antiradical power. Sida pyramidata Cav., well-known in Cuba as Yerba de aura, is traditionally used as a decoction of leaf sprouts to treat digestive disorders and diseases of the uterus. So far there are no reports of phytochemical studies on the plant that scientifically justify the attributed pharmacological properties. The objective of this work was to identify the secondary metabolites of biological and therapeutic interest present in the Sida pyramidata Cav. species. Phytochemical screening, performed on plant leaf extracts and applied thin layer chromatography, allowed to verify the presence of several families of secondary metabolites with pharmacological interest such as: saponins, essential oils, alkaloids, phenols and coumarins; being these with more abundance in the ethanol extract. The phytochemical content and medicinal properties of the mushroom Geastrum saccatum, collected from the northern Western Ghats were evaluated. The mushroom powder was extracted in different solvents separately and assessed for the presence of phytochemicals. Anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, antioxidant and iron chelating activities of the mushroom extract were evaluated. The results revealed that chloroform extract of G. saccatum (CEGS) exhibited the maximum number of phytochemicals compared to the other extracts and hence was selected for further studies. The mushroom analysed contains different types of phytoconstituents having pharmaceutical activities. Maximum activity for the studied bioassays was found at 50 μg/ml of CEGS concentration. Objective To investigate the main chemical components and the anti-inflammatory activity of extracts of Adelia ricinella L. aerial parts. Methods Three extracts obtained by soxhlet extraction and ethanol/water mixtures were evaluated in their chemical composition by UPLC-DAD-MS/MS. The in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of the prepared extracts was assessed through three different assays: COX-1 and COX-2 enzymatic inhibition, cell-based COX assays on RAW264.7 macrophages (ATCC) measuring the COX-2 protein expression by Western blot and the measurement of the PGE2 concentration in the supernatants of the culture medium. Also was determinate the effect of the three extracts on the RAW 264.7 cell viability. Key findings Few differences in the phytochemical profile were found between the three prepared extracts, identifying a blend of thirteen flavonoids derived from luteolin and apigenin, with orientin as main constituent. Plant extracts (alcoholic and aqueous) did not affect the macrophage cell viability (IC50 > 256 μg/ml) and significantly reduced COX-1 and COX-2 enzyme activities. Additionally, COX-2 expression and PGE2 release were suppressed after 24 h of LPS stimulation and treatment with plant extracts (8-64 μg/ml). Conclusions A. ricinella extracts showed the ability to reduce the inflammatory effect exerted by LPS in murine macrophages. However, further studies should confirm their anti-inflammatory activity. Aims: To investigate the biological activity of Thai medicinal plant extracts and their active substances on the inhibition of growth and the transcription of colibactin genes of colibactin‐producing Escherichia coli, and effect on the pathogenesis from colibactin toxin including transient infections and colibactin‐induced DNA damage. Methods and Results: Among 16 medicinal plants examined, aqueous extracts of Terminalia catappa, Psidium guajava and Sandoricum koetjape demonstrated the growth inhibition against E. coli ATCC 25922, which is known to produce colibactin toxin. These plant extracts contain the active phytochemical compounds, tannin and quercetin, which are able to inhibit the growth of E. coli ATCC 25922. Interestingly, the extracts of T. catappa, P. guajava and S. koetjape, and their compounds tannin and quercetin, protected the eukaryotic epithelial cells of Vero cells and Caco‐2 cells from infection and DNA damage by E. coli ATCC 25922. Moreover, these plant extracts and compounds exhibited efficacy to downregulate the expression of five genes (clbA, clbB, clbM, clbN and clbP) that are required for colibactin biosynthesis. Conclusions: The extracts of T. catappa, P. guajava and S. koetjape, and their compounds of tannin and quercetin had ability to inhibit the growth and transcription of colibactin genes of colibactin‐producing Escherichia coli. Hence, these plant extracts and compounds could protect the transient infection and DNA damage of the eukaryotic epithelial cells. In recent decades, the use of plants as a natural remedy has been widely applied in traditional medicine and the treatment of various diseases, including cancer. However, in order to confirm the potential benefits of anticancer drug development from natural sources, in-depth screening assessments are necessary. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of eight medicinal plants against breast carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines. Remarkably, among all the tested plant extracts, Pyracantha angustifolia and Paullinia cupana extracts showed maximum inhibition in the two cancer cell line models, as detected by cell viability assays, but not in normal mammary epithelial cells. Moreover, induction of cell cycle arrest was seen in both cancer cell models after treatment with extracts derived from the fruits of P. angustifolia and the seeds of P. cupana. Phytochemical and antioxidant analyses demonstrated the presence of high phenolic and flavonoid contents, including an increase in 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) activity. The growth inhibition of human breast carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma cells mediated by both extracts appears to be associated with apoptosis and upregulated expression of pro-apoptotic genes (caspase-3, caspase-7, tumor suppressor protein-p53, cytochrome c, poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase, p53 upregulated modulator of apoptosis, and Bcl-2-associated X-protein). Together, these results indicate that P. angustifolia and P. cupana offer a promising approach for the development of anticancer agents. Background: Along with swift economic evolution and continuous amelioration of lifestyle, people at present are paying more attention to health issues. Synthetic drugs will be compensated with other natural ones that belong to natural origin. Plants have always been considered as sources of several compounds that are used in many fields, especially human and animal health, starting from boosting immunity to the treatment of infectious diseases caused by some pathogenic microbes such as bacteria, fungi as well as viruses. This study aimed to incorporate some types of plants within the antimicrobial portfolio through the examination of different six plants which were Cichorium intybus, Cinnamomum camphora, Commiphora myrrha, Foeniculum vulgare, Nerium oleander, and Spartium junceum. As well, attempting to identify the active constituents of their extracts using GC–MS. Materials and methods: All selected plants were analyzed to determine their phytochemical composition such as phenolics, alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and so on. The extraction step was done by sophisticated equipment called supercritical fluid extractor SFE through adjustment of specific conditions include temperature, time, flow rate and pressure to change the behavior of CO2. Testing the antimicrobial activity of each plant extract via agar well diffusion method through the formation of clear zones against a wide range of test microorganisms including both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as yeasts. Finally, attempting to primarily identify the constituents of each plant extract using GC–MS. Results and discussion: The crude extract of F. vulgare showed the highest potency against C. albicans, E. faecalis and S. typhimurium, it contains some unique compounds such as squalene, eugenol and isoeugenol while, Extract of C. intybus showed a moderate activity especially against C. lipolytica and MRSA and it includes Vitamin A like compound which indicates antioxidant property. Conclusion: Conclusively, fennel gave a promising result as a good wide spectrum antimicrobial agent because it contains some compounds act as antimicrobial agents such as eugenol which was used as food preservatives in addition to squalene which acts as an antioxidant and antimycotic agent so, it will be useful especially while it was used in highly purified form excluding all undesirable subcomponents. Background: Natural products are becoming important alternative medicines for diabetes treatment. Many Bauhinia plants in Thailand have been used in Thai traditional medicines for diabetic patients. Bauhinia plants have been reported on anti-alpha-glucosidase activity. However, Bauhinia pottsii var. pottsii G. Don which is a local plant in Southern Thailand has not been reported on antidiabetic activity and phytochemistry. Hence, it was selected for further study. Objectives: Isolation of chemical constituents from B. pottsii var. pottsii and determination of their biological activity on alpha-glucosidase inhibition. Materials and Methods: Chromatographic techniques, enzymatic assay, and molecular docking were done in this study. Results: A new stilbene derivative, 1,3-benzenediol-5-(-2-phenylethyl)-6-(2',3'-butanediol)-3', methyl (1) and five known compounds such as 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2), quercetin (3), 3-O-methylquercetin (4), a mixture of beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol (5), and 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside (6) were isolated from B. pottsii var. pottsii. The plant extracts and isolated compounds were determined for anti-alpha-glucosidase activity. The results showed that the compounds 2, 3, and 4 were inhibited alpha-glucosidase enzyme activity with inhibition concentration at 50% (IC50) values of 3.637 mM, 0.486 mM, and 0.292 mM, respectively. While positive control, acarbose exhibited IC50value as 0.166 mM. The mechanism of action was proved using computer molecular docking. Compound 2 was predicted as mixed-type inhibitor, whereas compounds 3 and 4 were predicted as competitive inhibitors. Purpose: To review the medicinal uses of Mahonia bealei, an important member of the genus Mahonia, with a focus on its various applications in Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as published scientific evidence on its effectiveness. Methods: Information in all available literature was retrieved using different search engines including NCBI, ISI Web of Knowledge and Google. Results: Several compounds have been extracted from M. bealei. These include alkaloids, triterpenes, flavonoids, phytosterols and lignans. Traditionally, the plant is used to treat dysentery, diarrhea and inflammation. Globally, scientists have used in vitro and in vivo techniques to evaluate the usefulness of compounds extracted from M. bealei with respect to their antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antioxidant as well as anti-gastrin properties. Conclusion: Different parts of this plant still remain underexplored. Moreover, comparison of the properties of the isolated compounds has not been carried out, nor are there reports on the synergistic effects of extracts of the plant. In this study the leaves and fruits of wild raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) populations from the central Balkan region were examined to determine the level of secondary metabolites and related antioxidant activity, as well as biological activity, upon existing ethnobotanical evidence, primarily linked to gastrointestinal disorders. The values obtained for total phenols ranged from 59.68 to 96.83 mg GA g-1 and 24.29 to 38.71 mg GA g-1 in leaf and fruit extracts, respectively. The highest values of tannins and anthocyanins were determined for leaf extracts from a population of east Serbia at a level of 1.27 mg mL-1 and 9.00 mg mL-1. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by measuring the scavenging capacity of the extracts on DPPH. Higher antioxidant activity was detected in the leaf extracts than in the fruit extracts. Leaf and fruit extract were the most effective against Escherichia coli (ATCC 8739). Anticancer activity was studied on a human colorectal cancer cell line HCT-116. Leaf extracts exhibited anticancer activity with IC50/24 h 162.38 μg mL-1 and IC50/48 h 95.69 μg mL-1. Wild raspberry leaf and fruit extracts contain numerous secondary metabolites providing marked antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticancer activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
