We report the design and simulation performance of a digital push–pull switch based on a wide-angle, asymmetric X-junction that we recently proposed (truncated-structural X-branch). At a full-branching angle of 1.2°, the crosstalk and (straight-port) transmission at the zero-voltage state were -19 and -0.92 dB, respectively. We propose a new class of Y-junctions based on wavefront processing to facilitate phase matching during branching. This is achieved by grading the lateral index profile of the waveguides. Simulations show that, at 85% power transmission, when compared to an all step-profile truncated-structural Y-branch (TSYB) that we proposed earlier, it widens the full branching angle by 1.5°. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
