We take up this qualitative inquiry as a means of practicing and advocating for a deeper understanding of South Korean teachers' pedagogy and perspectives in multicultural education, moving beyond surface-level critiques. Through the lens of postcolonial theory, this study highlights how government-led multicultural education places teachers in a position where they participate in the othering and exclusion of multicultural students. Simultaneously, we recognise that teachers contribute their professional insights to envision a Third Space in their practice. This paper also sheds light on the challenges faced when teaching Korean history in classrooms with multicultural students. Overall, this study provides insights into the intricate nature of the hybrid pedagogical space that has evolved historically and socially in South Korea, as well as its interconnectedness with global relationships. Given the professional hybridity of South Korean teachers, we believe that developing a new consciousness within this hybrid space is a crucial starting point for empowering teachers to reflect on their pedagogy and practices when working with students from diverse backgrounds. This paper examines the invisibilization of violence and deaths in India's leading daily during the 1918 influenza pandemic, the Times of India. The pandemic killed more than 14 million Indians in a short span of time. Studying this historical event and the way it was reported in an influential newspaper, this research shows how media representations not only invisibilized the alarming levels of mortality, but also elided the efforts of colonial capitalism to profit from the loss of human life. Building on the work of Achille Mbembe, and through the concept of necroptics, this study examines the invisibility of violence as malign neglect that contributes to death-worlds. It shows how colonial violence was erased or mystified through media necroptics, which created untraceable deaths, that is, framed deaths as natural or systemic outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores anthropogenic climate change, postcolonial theory, and the arts in South Africa through Kevin Volans's early electronic works KwaZulu Summer Landscape (1979) and Studies in Zulu History (1977-1979). Using Dipesh Chakrabarty's »The Climate of History: Four Theses« as a foundation, it examines the collapse between histories of human culture and nature. Volans's compositions, created during a politically-charged era of South African history, reflect on the intersection of capital and climate in a way that challenges postcolonial critique, we argue. This study thus repositions Volans's work within global music discourse and considers new methodologies for analysing his music in what Chakrabarty refers to as »geological time«. This article uses postcolonial theory to examine optimal risk communication practices of new risks and scientific information to non-indigenous communities. The article calls on risk communication scholars and health practitioners to embrace postcolonial theory as it provides a critical and reflective framework to examine ontological beliefs and methodological and structural aspects in the communication of public health messages. The article draws on insight from three studies on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy within Scotland's African, Caribbean, and Black communities between March 2021 and April 2022. The article offers new insight into why some communities hesitate to respond to public health messages such as vaccine uptake advice. Therefore, risk communication scholars should use the postcolonial lens to examine their assumptions, thinking, and perspectives on communicating new science and risk information in emergencies. Timbre, which traditionally was put in the background of musical compositions, now starts to gain a presence in the foreground of contemporary gamelan compositions. It does so to the extent that it dominates other musical parameters; it blurs the distinction between timbre, harmony, rhythm, and many other elements. In this paper, I analyse the rise of timbre as a compositional parameter by looking at new gamelan works after the year 2010. This includes the works of Septian Dwi Cahyo, Irene Tanuwidjaja, Dion Nataraja, Dieter Mack, Putu Septa, Arham Aryadi, Arya Deva Suryanegara, and Yan Priya Kumara Janardhana. Aside from this primary analysis, I also trace the development of the discourse regarding timbre in the gamelan tradition by looking at historical precursors in the twentieth century, such as works by I Wayan Sadra, Pande Made Sukerta, Aloysius Suwardi, Ki Tjokrowasito, and Ki Nartosabdho. I connect my analysis with various critical theories by writers ranging from Bhabha to Derrida to demonstrate that the rise of timbre has brought the gamelan tradition to its breaking point, yet, it is still in relation to that tradition; it is a state of tradition in suspension. Framed by Homi Bhabha's concepts of hybridity and the third space of enunciation, this study explores postcolonial relationships conceivably enacted through policy borrowing processes of learner-centred pedagogy (LCP) in Ghana. Nine Ghanaian and nine foreign stakeholders were interviewed. Conscious of the power imbalance implicit in traditional aid, the case project attempted to challenge the asymmetrical power relationships by allocating policy leadership and responsibility to Ghanaian stakeholders. However, the third space of enunciation created within the project did not seem to lead to a hybridisation of pedagogical ideas: while it was the Ghanaians themselves who promoted LCP within the project, the conceptual basis of the reform was dependent on knowledge and experiences which they gained in the West. This article concludes that the postcolonial turn through hybridisation of indigenous and Western pedagogies was not observed, although hybridity may happen in the process of actualising LCP at school and classroom levels. Disappearance is an inherent quality of the 'trace'. A trace, moving within the ambiguous space between absence and presence, refers to some other event connected with it. In this essay, I apply my hybrid model of the trace, derived from the philosophies of Jacques Derrida, Charles Sanders Peirce, and Tim Ingold, in an analysis of the works of Ghanaian artist, Ibrahim Mahama. Mahama's art responds to traces of failure and disappearance in the urban landscapes of Ghana. Working with materials and spaces in decay, Mahama maps residues of the past embedded in the material, tracing within its narratives of trade, migration, labour, capital, and commodity exploitation. By engaging communities around him in collaborative processes that are often large of scale and presented in public spaces, Mahama recollects memories of labour and exposes extreme histories that inform the present. Scattered across four countries in the Middle East, Kurds are one of the largest stateless nations in the world and have long been portrayed as pawns within imperial interventions in the region, both by some sections of the Left as well as within authoritarian right-wing politics. In parallel, a specific vein of postcolonial theory has treated queer/LGBTI+ activism in the region as "alien," "foreign," and even as a Trojan horse of imperialism, an idea that has been taken up, again, by sections of the Left as well as right-wing authoritarian politicians. Adopting the doubly illegitimized subject position of the "Kurdish queer" as its point of departure, this article highlights the importance of taking the situated knowledge and political analyses of Kurdish queers seriously to uncover histories of violence as well as the multiple layers of queer, postcolonial, and decolonial imagination. Doing so, the author argues, puts theory and visions of democracy under productive scrutiny, stretching them in critical directions. The article concludes that an investment in or curiosity for Kurdish queer studies is needed to complicate our understanding of the history and politics of the region, as well as how sexuality and conflict are entangled. Even though political vlogging, largely understood as the production of online videos to demand accountability from the state, provides an avenue for netizens to express dissent, this form of civic engagement comes with drawbacks. Based on selective archiving of the political rhetoric of 12 disenfranchised Ghanaian migrants domiciled in the United States and Europe, I draw attention to four main epistemic complications inherent in the diasporians' public opinions of a perceived political crisis in Ghana. The analysis shows that the migrants raise emotional arguments concerning such topoi as corruption and bad governance; poor social infrastructure; unemployment; a weak educational system; and the problem of religion and superstition. The study also reveals that the political messaging of the migrants is fundamentally premised on a Eurocentric view of governance which, on the contrary, glorifies Western imperialism, and reinforces Victorian narratives that depict postcolonial subjects as indolent, psychotic, and malevolent. This article critically engages with central tenets of decolonial thought. While sympathetic to decolonial thought's anti-colonialism and critique of Eurocentric universalism, the article argues that decolonial thought's understanding(s) of knowledge relies on an essentialising centralisation of origins and roots. Against decolonial thought's assertion that a knowledge's relevance for anti-colonial struggle results from its position of exteriority vis-á-vis colonial systems of domination, the article suggests that we need to look at the dialectical and hybrid processes through which bodies of knowledge are made agentic in relation to concrete contexts of political conflict. To discern a body of knowledge's meaning and relevance for anti-colonial struggles, we need to understand that it is continually shaped and reshaped from recurrent practices of reading, dissemination and re-articulation, through which the theory or knowledge body becomes hybridised and reformulated in relation to incessantly evolving contexts. The present paper is a retrospective journey/'voyage back' in Moroccan popular art, an invitation to cast a new perspective on its lyrical heritage, to uncover hitherto overlooked dimensions, and ultimately to rethink in novel and original ways Moroccan popular culture. Read through the prism of Postcolonial theory with its arsenal of conceptual tools, Houcine Slaoui's Lmarikane or 'The Handsome Blue eyed Ones' is invested with unsuspected revolutionary potentials in so far as it erects itself as a genuine anthropological document unravelling the deeply ambivalent condition of subalternity. While being politically and historically grounded, the complexity of the song/text lies in forcing the spotlight on the epistemic violence committed by Western imperial powers, namely the American presence in Morocco ensuing Operation Torch in 1942, and ultimately exploring how identity is constructed through a complex engagement with otherness. Whereas translation, as a theoretical and professional discipline, has fairly been scrutinized in the African context and elsewhere in the world, it cannot be downplayed that it continues to suffer a great deal of challenges. Many of these challenges could be pinned on postcolonial and post-apartheid dynamics, which prioritize political agendas over the development of this discipline in the African context. Given this reality, this article problematizes and navigates four pertinent challenges pertaining to the translation of African literature, predominantly from European (or European-Africanized) to indigenous African languages. These four challenges, which are named in the second section of this article, are recognized as principal sources of data to provide empirical evidence and are elicited from different African literary discourses. The objective is to underline that the translation challenges concerning African literature, in large part, are intensified by the vestigial elements of colonialism and apartheid in Africa. Owing to this concern, this article applies postcolonial theory to its discussions. Above all, it is important to note that I use the prefix ‘post-’ from postcolonial theory to imply that although many African states officially ceased colonialism and apartheid, it does not denote that colonialism and apartheid are completely dead. For these reasons, the general findings and discussions confirm that translators continually struggle to strike a balance between linguistic transference and retaining the ethnological, spiritual, and historical tenets in African literature. The closing remarks underline the necessity to continue this discourse in a bid to find reasonable solutions to this conundrum.

In the context of hotly contested debates within critical urban theory, many scholars have recently attempted (both implicitly and explicitly) to move beyond the relational-dialectical concept of 'totality', taking up the notion of 'the constitutive outside' in its place. With this in view, this article seeks to (1) develop a critique of the ways in which the concept of the constitutive outside is deployed in these debates; and (2) to sketch another path forward – one that understands capitalist urbanisation as a distinctive moment in the evolution of a world-encompassing and internally related socio-spatial totality, while also attending to well-founded concerns among theorists of the constitutive outside regarding the question of difference and ascriptive hierarchisation. More precisely, this article will pursue a close reading of work on the constitutive outside in critical urban theory, suggesting that it effectively re-articulates longstanding and entrenched tenets of capitalist ideology, positing the image of a 'space-time of the other'. And it will conclude with a revised conceptualisation of totality for critical urban theory, building on Nancy Fraser's recent work on capitalism's racialised, gendered, and ecological 'hidden abodes'. This article begins by examining the historiography of Shanxi piaohao and asking how modernist financial discourse gradually took shape over the past century. It then counters the persistent modernist discourse and its anachronistic application to the history of piaohao and the north Chinese interior from two aspects. First, how piaohao managed to build an empire-wide financial network and facilitated flows of capital and goods during the nineteenth century. Second, how family-centered capitalist and non-capitalist histories countered piaohao 's unrealized path to modern Western-style banking. This article challenges the perceived universalism of the Western European economy and adopts a Braudelian emphasis on an essential feature of the history of capitalism in a global context—that is, capitalism's unlimited flexibility and capacity for change and adaptation, as seen throughout the history of the Shanxi merchants and piaohao firms, not confined to the singular future of transformation into modern Western-style banks. Orality, literacy, and digitality are forms of knowledge and communication based on speech, reading and writing, and electronic technologies using binary formats, respectively. This article reviews four possible relationships between them: Is literacy (and by extension digitality) the superior form, is orality superior, are all three mostly interchangeable, or do they all change each other as they emerge historically? These different positions imply different histories: linear, contingent, and epochal. This article considers the future of digitality by reviewing these relationships, past and present. These four intellectual positions did not arise neutrally. In fact, the superiority of literacy is rooted in Eurocentric views of technological progress and colonial power. Because this positionality is crucial to understanding the historical relationship among them, the article draws on the philosophy of science of dialectical realism to look for the similarities and differences between the positions, as well as the contradictions. The study of policy alone often means domestic policy, of interest to generalist sociologists interested in how political ideas are turned into domestic legislation, executive action, and/or court litigation. Foreign policy, as the financial, commercial, diplomatic and military relations of a state with foreign states, remains a niche subfield. But foreign relations should be conceived of as the broader set of entanglements between societies, encompassing transnational movements, expert networks, and fields. Then, sociological theories of foreign relations can interest generalist sociologists. In this review, we illustrate how this broad view of foreign relations applies to the study of the United States in the world today (USitWT) by first surveying how sociologists of the world society and world system have focused on transnational relations and the place of the United States in their dynamics, and how they have engaged with the question of power. We then demonstrate how field theorists' study of transnational fields can allow sociologists to reconceptualize the historical role of the USitWT by highlighting continuities between European colonial governmentalities and current US transnational practices. This field perspective can allow sociologists to understand the USitWT as transnational, postcolonial, or neo-colonial governmentality, depending on the sociological and historical depth and range of its relation with different parts of the world. Mithilfe eines Sachstands- und Literaturberichts werden begriffliche Interpretations- und Deutungsschwierigkeiten erläutert. Eine typenbildende Inhaltsanalyse führt zur Entwicklung eines Kategoriensystems der ermittelten Handlungsmöglichkeiten. Insgesamt werden neun Kategorien definiert und durch zugehörige Anwendungsbeispiele ergänzt. The conceptual understanding of decolonization, the interface of decolonial theory with librarianship, and possible options for action in information-providing institutions are contents of this article. With the help of a factual and literature review, conceptual interpretation and interpretation difficulties are explained. A type-forming content analysis leads to the development of a category system of the identified options for action. Postcolonial theory can be paired with a values-engaged educative evaluation approach to resist imperialism and colonialism in evaluation spaces, de-Westernize conceptualizations of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and extend the capacity of culturally responsive evaluation. Beyond the joining of the values-engaged educative approach and postcolonial theory, Collaboration Research Network theories offer another distinct but complementary avenue for exploring structural power imbalance and invisible hierarchies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics evaluation contexts. The evolution of refugee humanitarianism is commonly studied in terms of critical junctures. One such historical moment is the creation of a 'safe zone' for Iraqi Kurdish refugees above the 36th parallel of Northern Iraq through the 1991 United Nations (UN) mission known as 'Operation Provide Comfort.' The UN intervention is widely accepted as a critical juncture because it marked the beginning of international humanitarianism's extra-territorial phase. 'Operation Provide Comfort' brought a paradigm shift in the management of displaced populations by means of introducing "preventive protection" as a novel approach combining protection with control as the idea is to keep refugees in their own countries and offer them help without the need to cross an international border. The standard narrative underlines Western historical priority by attributing the preventive protection to a single source of ideas and processes stemming from the West. Drawing on postcolonial research, this paper argues for recognizing the agency of the non-West in the formulation and execution of the safe haven concept as a historical milestone. More specifically, it demonstrates the pioneering role that Turkey played through international debates and diplomatic action, which culminated into the new episode of refugee humanitarianism. The findings also invite us to revisit current explanations of the evolution of international humanitarian norms by showing the entanglement of refugee protection on the one hand, and domestic and regional questions of ethnicity and counter-insurgency on the other. This paper attempts to demystify the antagonistic relationship between modernity and tradition as construed by Ashis Nandy. As a prominent voice in postcolonial scholarship, Nandy saw modernity as a colonial conception of rights, self, and society. Nandy's critique of modernity laid the grounds for several projects that rejected the modern consensus for its colonial origins. Juxtaposing Nandy's reiteration of early anti-modern nationalist thought with a multi-dimensional reading of colonial modernity in contemporary Ambedkarite scholarship, this paper explores the ambivalences of negotiating modern liberalism in a postcolonial order of hierarchical group identities. Despite the close imbrication of modernity with the imperial centre, Ambedkarite scholarship demonstrated how B.R. Ambedkar, synthesized a middle ground, where he incorporated the promise of modernity to liberate the 'individual' without dismissing the 'communal' collective self, construed by traditions. While postcolonial scholarship is heterogeneous, following Nandy, huge postcolonial melancholia has conflated modernity with coloniality. How do we rethink postcolonial theory from its current culturalist posturing to (re)claim the emancipatory potential of both modernity and tradition? It's difficult to give an account of human history without alluding to the reigns of terror and the fascination with violence perpetrated in the name of freedom and justice. Freedom and violence are two contrasting concepts that have shaped the history of humanity. While freedom is often associated with liberation, violence is characterized by the use of force and coercion. This study delves into the complex relationship between violence and freedom from a phenomenological perspective. Our understanding of freedom is shaped by the Kantian conception of freedom as the property of the will. It's a model of freedom which associates freedom with mastery. It's not only the negative and positive conceptions of freedom that have fallen prey to this attitude but postmodern freedom also operates within the same framework. The paper challenges this conventional understanding of freedom and its alignment with violence by drawing on phenomenological philosophy to explore the experiences of individuals who are both subject and objects of violence. It argues that freedom is not simply the absence of physical constraints, but rather a complex interplay of social and existential factors that shape individuals' experiences of agency and autonomy. Purpose: This study aims to investigate how the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and Chinese outward foreign direct investments (FDI) impact the Belt and Road countries (BRCs). It draws on postcolonial theory to investigate the (geo)political objectives behind the financial and economic means. Design/methodology/approach: In line with the nature of postcolonial studies, the study applies a discourse analysis integrating it with empirical data on indebtedness and trade. Findings: This study finds that FDI and the BRI, as a development project, need to be considered a double-edged sword for the receiving countries. The authors provide evidence that China has instrumentalized financial and economic means to gain political influence and pursue geopolitical ambitions. Moreover, investments into sensitive sectors (e.g. energy, infrastructure), combined with the BRCs' inability to pay back loans, could eventually lead to China gaining control of these assets. Research limitations/implications: The study investigates the financial and economic means that are instrumentalized to gain political influence while not considering flows of technology and know-how. It also limits itself to the study of FDI coming from one specific country, i.e. China. Therefore, no comparison and evaluation are made of FDI from other countries, such as the USA or European countries. Practical implications: By revealing noncommercial objectives and geopolitical ambitions that China pursues through the BRI, the authors derive policy implications for the BRCs, third countries and China. Originality/value: The study contributes to postcolonial theory and neocolonialism by investigating how China uses financial and economic means to achieve noncommercial objectives and pursue geopolitical ambitions. Additionally, the authors enhance the understanding of FDI by highlighting more subtle aspects of the complex and contextual nature of FDI as a social phenomenon, which have been overlooked thus far. Scholars have long grappled with the ways in which unequal power relations influence the creation and circulation of international social work knowledge. I outline a robust postcolonial theoretical framework to elucidate complexities of global knowledge and power and extend possibilities for considering such questions of epistemic justice. Drawing on my own research with service providers in Nepal, I suggest three analytic strategies to apply postcolonial insights in international social work research: reflexivity, critical discourse analysis, and postcolonial translation. In literary criticism, both the context and the content of a given text; speech, graph, image, or picture are essential. It is the totality of these two elements that pave the way for a better understanding of any given text. Hence, since the purpose of every communication or speech act is comprehension, this study examines the stylistic profile of Wole Soyinka and Jean Pliya in The Lion and the Jewel (1964) and La secrétaire particulière (2001) respectively. The study adopts the French ‘explication de texte’ technique as its methodology to carry out a textual analysis of the two selected plays. As a theoretical framework, the study uses Edward Said and Homi Bhabha’s Postcolonial theory which interrogates the effects of the interactions between the centre and the margin with the view to reconstructing the worldview on matters of history, race, identity, and culture. Findings reveal that in resisting colonial domination and imposition, the two African playwrights take advantage of linguistic manipulations in the composition of their literary texts. With the application of transliteration, direct translation, proverbs, figures of speech, allusions, lexical borrowing, and grammatical and phonemic corruption, the writers are able to foreground their intention to postcolonialize and africanize their literary works. This article brings to the forefront Timothy Brennan's emphasis on Edward Said's engagement with philosophy. An attempt is made to reconstruct some of Brennan's claims about Said's views on the relationship between mental representations and the external world. It is shown that Said rejected naïve or direct realism in favor of representationalism. It is also argued that, despite being seen as a post-modern thinker, Said subscribed to a version of the correspondence theory of truth. Said embraced some form of standpoint epistemology, but he did not think that this had any direct bearing on how we should think about what makes a given claim true. Finally, an attempt is made to understand the relationship between Said's project and the classical Marxist project of ideology critique, as well as contemporary attempts to develop an epistemology of ignorance. The Black diaspora was established via several migratory streams-- most notably, the forced migration of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade which was a perilous manifestation of colonialism. Central to the maintenance of the white supremacy characterizing colonialism, Black persons were subjected to racialization and subsequent discrimination which both constructed and perpetuated their subalternity1. The psychosocial internalizations and manifestations of this oppression extended into the postcolonial era as formerly colonized countries gained independence. Previous studies suggest ongoing psychological and socioeconomic disparities between Black persons in postcolonial states and those who most closely resemble the hegemonically Eurocentric groups therein. An additional by-product of colonization has also been the erasure of the perspectives and oppositional knowledge of disenfranchised groups. Furthermore, there exist rather diverse and inconsistent views regarding racial identity, racialization, and racial discrimination between specific ethnic groups within the Black diaspora. As such, the current phenomenological study employed the postcolonial theoretical framework and Van Manen's (1997) existential model of analysis in investigating Black UVIC ("University of Victoria") students' experiences and understandings regarding both racialization and racism. The results of the study's two in-depth interviews revealed that the respondents' experiences and perceptibility of racialization and racial discrimination were considerably low due to the racial homogeneity within their respective countries. Racism was thus regarded as a more irrelevant and foreign concept within such spheres. However, experiences with colorism emerged as a key theme in both interviews. The author concluded that the relational realities spurring the perceptions of racialization may vary across the different corporeal and spatial contexts of postcolonial environments. Therefore, the specific historical, cultural, and geographical components of each postcolonial nation may directly give rise to diverse perceptions and understanding of racial identity, racialization, and racial discrimination. Furthermore, the homogenous and heterogenous racial composition of various postcolonial states seems to have a direct impact on such perceptions. The current research may be useful in identifying and understanding the range of intra- and inter-diasporic psychosocial processes further to complete racial equity and decolonization. In this essay, I draw on interview discourses with 22 Sassoi – same-gender-loving men in Ghana – to examine how they discursively deploy "straight," "gay," and "bisexual" identifications in specific contexts. Drawing on the work of postcolonial studies and queer intercultural communication scholarship, I show how Sassoi infuse gay, bisexual and straight identifications with alternative meanings to resist the exclusionary discourses of Ghanaian sexual citizenship and Western understandings of same-sex sexuality. In the end, I argue that in contrast to narratives of reconciliation where queer subjects resolve multiple aspects of themselves, such as being gay and religious, queer African subjects draw on a politics of complementarity – where polar identities such as gay and straight are not always perceived as oppositional.. The insistence on anachronism, where contemporary migrants forge the unauthorised routes of a present-day underground railroad, not only provides us with another means to map the present. It also reopens a past considered dead, gone, forgotten, and buried. Then, to think of migrants as travellers, is to underline the arbitrary imposition of 'illegality' and returns us to the violence that suffocates mobility despite its structural centrality to the making of the modern world over the last five hundred years. If we were to shift the axis of chronological time 180°, we could then move into the depths to sift its sediments and register the stratifications of the past in the continuing constitution of the present. Time is no longer assumed as a linear flow into the future or place merely a material given. Both are socially produced and culturally configured. This means they can be reconfigured and respond to other coordinates and concerns. In considering the modern migrant as the seeming epitome of the historical present, we encounter all the shifting dynamics and subaltern complexities of time and space as it is suspended, stretched, and twisted by institutional controls and documentation and further deepened by resistance and clandestine movement. This literature review examines research on efforts to decolonize geography education. The main research problems addressed are documenting the history of calls to reform geography curricula to challenge Eurocentric biases, synthesizing arguments on the need to decolonize curricula to empower marginalized voices, and identifying examples of implemented reforms. A systematic review methodology was utilized. Academic databases were searched using relevant terms, and inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied to identify 31 peer-reviewed articles published from 2000-2022. Key data was extracted, and thematic analysis was conducted to identify patterns related to the research problems. The review reveals longstanding calls to decolonize curricula from post-colonial perspectives that critique Western epistemic dominance. Arguments emphasize how current curricula perpetuate cognitive injustice by marginalizing indigenous knowledge and fail to address local perspectives on global issues. Examples of reforms in New Zealand, South Africa, and elsewhere demonstrate the localization of content, pedagogy, and knowledge. However, progress remains uneven. The study concludes that transforming geographic education is critical for social justice but depends on investments in teacher training focused on decolonization and indigenous knowledge to enable meaningful curriculum reforms. In this issue we frame Global Sociology as a critical perspective on doing sociology on a global scale, considering the specificities of societies worldwide as well as global interrelations, and involving areas and sociologies that are only insufficiently represented in the discipline's mainstream. Thus, we consider Global Sociology as a practical as well as critical approach to sociology. We argue that there is a need to strengthen the contribution of empirical, especially qualitative sociological research on and in societies of the Global South to general sociological theory-building. Global Sociology requires, first and foremost, the methodologically informed development of conceptual tools for understanding contemporary, globally entangled social worlds through theory-building based on empirical research in the Global South. Taking, in this way, biographical research as an exemplary field of qualitative research in the contributions to this issue, we suggest three research strategies: First, the scrutinizing of the universality or applicability of existing concepts from the North, when applied elsewhere; second, charting the challenges that emerge for biographical research on the one hand from the transregional entanglements of societies and from the unfolding of processes of biographical becoming across different geographical spaces; and on the other from a comparative perspective, i.e., identifying the differences and similarities between the structural forces that shape biographies and their narrative articulations in different regions. And third, scrutinizing the ways in which the location of societies in the Global South at the margins of global systems of domination in history conditions the possibilities and forms of biographical research via (post-)colonial entanglements. This article offers a postcolonial critique of Niki Daly's Pretty Salma (2006), a Ghanaian retelling of the European folktale Little Red Riding Hood. Here, I particularly examine the role and representation of characters that highlight the conflict between the traditional and non-traditional styles of livelihood within Ghanaian society and argue for a more critically sensitive and inclusive approach to societal representation within Black spaces. This article discusses the lone outlier associated with the cannibal boom of European exploitation films in the 1970s and 1980s – with the main point of diversion being that Sisworo Gautama Putra's film is an Indonesian production rather than the typical Italian fare. Being an Asian film that emulates the traditionally European style of cannibal film, Primitives opens a larger discussion about the role of the theoretical savage and the implications thereof, put in place by ghosts of imperialism and cinematic mimicry. The author explores these concepts with psychoanalytic input, opting to unpack the rationality behind an Indonesian film following the same imperialist notions utilized by the preceding Italian directors, which ultimately results in a subdivision of the artificial–natural dichotomy: the meta-natural. I argue that meta-ignorance and meta-insensitivity are the key sources influencing the reoccurrence of the (un)conscious misrepresentation of marginalized groups in management and organization research; such misrepresentation, in effect, perpetuates epistemic neocolonialism. Meta-ignorance describes incorrect epistemic attitudes, which render researchers ignorant about issues such as contextual history and emotional and political aspects of a social problem. Researcher meta-ignorance can be a permanent feature, given how researchers define, locate, and make use of their epistemic positionality and privilege. In contrast, meta-insensitivity is a special issue that arises when researchers miss multiple opportunities to capture valuable aspects of marginalized groups' voices or their life experiences and expectations. The problem of meta-insensitivity during fieldwork is more serious because researchers—despite their apparent willingness to be innovative—fail to understand how to be sensitive toward marginalized groups. The perpetuation of these elements' misrepresentation contributes to long-lasting negative consequences for marginalized groups. To counter this, I introduce and conceptualize the idea of oppositional views which researchers can mobilize to address misrepresentation of marginalized groups and challenge epistemic neocolonialism. There is an increasing call for addressing the Eurocentrism of research on the external dimension of European Union (EU) migration and border policies and practices. A growing body of work attempts to remedy the discipline's Eurocentrism through postcolonial theory. This article argues that more needs to be done to unsettle the Eurocentrism of migration studies with regard to the question of non-EU political subjectivity. The article adopts an alternative conception of subjectivity, which looks at the "affective" dimension of international relations. Through a close engagement with postcolonial studies on the question of political subjectivity, the article underscores the significance of history and historical relationships in constituting an affective politics of borders and migration in the non-EU world. The argument is illustrated through an empirical focus on Turkey. Drawing on interviews with Turkish border officials, the article aims to contribute to the literature in two ways. First, it argues that affective attachments shape how Turkish actors perceive and attribute meaning to national borders and human mobility across the national territory. Second, and relatedly, Turkish actors' identification with and positioning towards the EU's migration control regime are products of affective attachments rooted in historical experiences and encounters with Europe. Postcolonial theory perceives the world as divided between the coloniser and the colonised, thus indirectly reproducing the centrality of the West. For this reason, in literary studies, postcolonial theory fails to cover the literatures of those nations which were not colonised in a typical sense but rather occupied by Western imperialism, as was the case with Ottoman Turkey. This necessitates a convergent theoretical framework that might help evaluate the fictionalisation of the intersecting dynamics of oppression, violence, exploitation, and resistance in relation to the hegemonic narratives of imperialism and shape a new perspective regarding the politico-cultural dimension of imperial discourse. This article, in this respect, will critically develop the theoretical foundations of imperialism-oriented literary theory and construct it as an interdisciplinary field that has a potential to contribute to contemporary postcolonial theory and to encompass the intersectional dimensions of imperialism and imperial discourse for the articulation of the fictionalisation of imperialism-related issues in the under-considered corpus of modern Turkish literature. This paper considers narratives of refugee experience in postcolonial scholarship. Investigating refugee experiences is indispensable to understanding how postcolonial theory applies to narratives that represent involuntary mobilization. It elucidates how the refugee experience casts an idiosyncratic outlook on the Western and Orientalist formulations, bringing to light a renegotiation of the dynamics of the distinction between the two. Looking at Laila Lalami's Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits, I argue that Hope challenges the naturalized authenticity of Western superiority by employing the refugee trope as a rhetorical counter-narrative of core paradigms of Eurocentrism, contesting the Western ideologies that consolidate this naturalized Western superiority by establishing a parallel paradigm of power between the two locales--West and East. In recent years, the study of Italy's contemporary migrant "crisis" has broadened into explorations of national biopolitics in transhistorical and transnational contexts. This article suggests some useful pathways between critical race theory and postcolonial theory to explore pressing questions related to race-based cultural politics and Italian national identity. It highlights critical race theory's potential to enrich analyses of racializing discourses: for example, the concept of "interest convergence" is harnessed here to describe and understand the mechanisms of Italy's "New Risorgimento," i.e. its recent psychic unification through race-paranoia. The article also investigates possible applications of the widely (mis)used term "intersectionality" and explores some of the limits of both critical race theory and postcolonial theory, especially the ever-present risk of slippage back into preexisting essentialist identity categorizations. To avoid such slippages, the article suggests further exploration of theoretical conceptualizations of hybridity by two of postcolonial theory's foundational scholars, Edward Said and Homi K. Bhabha, due to their emphasis on discourse analysis and "interstitiality" rather than intersectionality. It urges further examination of Italy's questione della razza via interstitiality in order to introduce urgently-needed nuance into analyses of race, nationality, power, and cultural discourse. Finally, the article emphasizes the importance of deploying multiple theoretical approaches and stresses the need to work within a publicfacing "global humanities" framework to explore and expose how racializing discourses generate detrimental manufactured anxieties and hate in contemporary societies. Creating a "sense of the commons" via such transnational and comparative approaches to analyzing biopolitical conflicts would build both inclusivity, and therefore strength, within democratic nations, institutions, and societies, thus allowing them to thrive once again. The mainstream literature on international business has played a key role in an asymmetric international process by prioritizing hegemonic power and dominance of developed countries. Practices of this Imperialism, especially by multinational companies, are traditionally rooted in colonial legacies. This article reviews the theoretical and empirical research on international business from the critical perspective of postcolonialism. The findings show that multinational enterprises possess advantages over their host country, suggesting further traces of dominance between colonizers and former colonies. Specifically, findings show that topics around language, slavery, control mechanisms, imperialism, and capitalism are dominant in the field of international business, suggesting a strong effect of historical colonialism on international business activities. The critical analysis grounded on post-colonial and international business perspectives draw attention to some neglected, if not untouched, strands with substantial gaps in the prevalent knowledge, opening new avenues for future research. The reproductive justice framework shifted understandings and analyses of reproductive oppression beyond individual 'choice' by incorporating analyses of structural injustice, racism, and social and economic concerns. In this article, we build on understandings of the reproductive justice framework by integrating a postcolonial lens and bring the powerful conceptual tools of postcolonial feminist theory to bear on issues of reproductive oppression in India. We articulate the elements of such a postcolonial lens—the transnational operation of race, Orientalism, the subjective experience of colonialism as well as the role of the nation-state and nationalism in shaping reproductive lives—and demonstrate how these elements, along with religion, caste, and right-wing Hindu fundamentalism, structure reproductive oppression in India. Through our discussion of the issues of sterilization, sex-selective abortion, and commercial surrogacy in India we reveal how the underlying coloniality of Malthusian ideas of controlling population to reduce poverty, Orientalist and racist tropes of moral and intellectual inferiority and sexual licentiousness, and the Orientalist and colonial framing of the "East" as backward, uncivilized, and dependent clearly shape reproductive issues in India. Offering a nuanced analysis of the heterogeneity of reproductive oppression within India, our discussion brings reproductive justice into conversation with a feminist postcolonial perspective to foreground the continued impact of colonialism, neo-colonialism, and settler colonialism on reproductive oppression. The politics of history and memory culture have recently been the topic of increased discussion again—and this discussion has by no means been cool-headed, but hot, with a high potential for conflict. An argument is ongoing in the public sphere over which (hi)stories are present and visible and which are not, who is being recognized and who is not, as well as what is being forgotten, repressed, or tacitly accepted in this context. Corresponding to this general development, a debate is currently ongoing in the German press that has been dubbed " Historikerstreit 2.0 ," or "the historians' debate reloaded." The controversy was initially sparked by a discussion about the Cameroonian intellectual Achille Mbembe, his position toward the State of Israel, and his involvement with the BDS movement, before continuing on to a discussion about Michael Rothberg's book Multidirectional Memory when it was published in a German translation.
