Rotor-dynamic instabilities are more common today as the speed and horsepower of turbomachinery have increased. Stability problems become more frequent with time as the affected components begin to wear or fatigue. Bently Pressurized Bearing Co. (Minden, Nevada), formed by GE Power Systems (Schenectady, NY) after it bought Bently Nevada in 2002, focused on new bearing designs. Machinery engineers can now adjust the bearing's pressure, which in turn influence rotor dynamic response, avoiding shutdowns that were previously needed to correct instability problems.
