Individuals born preterm present lower exercise capacity. Along with the cardiopulmonary responses and activity level, muscle strength is a key determinant of exercise capacity. This systematic review aimed to summarize the current knowledge on the impact of preterm birth on skeletal muscle mass and function across the lifespan. The databases PubMed, MEDLINE, EBM, Embase, CINAHL Plus, Global Index Medicus, and Google Scholar were searched using keywords and MeSH terms related to skeletal muscle, preterm birth, and low birth weight. Two independent reviewers undertook study selection, data extraction, and quality appraisal using Covidence review management. Data were pooled to estimate the prematurity effect on muscle mass and function using the R software. From 4378 studies retrieved, 132 were full-text reviewed and 25 met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Five studies presented a low risk of bias, and 5 had a higher risk of bias due to a lack of adjustment for confounding factors and presenting incomplete outcomes. Meta-analyses of pooled data from homogenous studies indicated a significant reduction in muscle thickness and jump test (muscle power) in individuals born preterm versus full-term with standardized mean difference and confidence interval of - 0.58 (0.27, 0.89) and - 0.45 (0.21, 0.69), respectively.    Conclusion: Overall, this systematic review summarizing the existing literature on the impact of preterm birth on skeletal muscle indicates emerging evidence that individuals born preterm, display alteration in the development of their skeletal muscle mass and function. This work also highlights a clear knowledge gap in understanding the effect of preterm birth on skeletal muscle development. What is Known: • Preterm birth, which occurs at a critical time of skeletal muscle development and maturation, impairs the development of different organs and tissues leading to a higher risk of comorbidities such as cardiovascular diseases. • Preterm birth is associated with reduced exercise capacity. Objectives: Extremely preterm babies have a significant risk of neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI). There has been little investigation regarding the impact of prematurity on families. The objective of this study was to explore parental perspectives regarding the impact of prematurity on themselves/their family., Methods: Over 1 year, parents of children born <29 weeks' gestational age (GA) who were between 18 months old and 7 years old and came for their follow-up visit were invited to participate. They were asked to categorise the impacts of prematurity on their life and their family as positive, negative or both and to describe those impacts in their own words. Thematic analysis was performed by a multidisciplinary group, including parents. Logistic regression was performed to compare parental responses., Results: Among parents (n=248, 98% participation rate), most (74%) reported that their child's prematurity had both positive and negative impacts on their life or their family's life, while 18% reported only positive impacts and 8% only negative impacts. These proportions were not correlated with GA, brain injury, nor level of NDI. The positive impacts reported included: an improved outlook on life, such as gratitude and perspective (48%), stronger family relationships (31%) and the gift of the child (28%). The negative themes were stress and fear (42%), loss of equilibrium due to medical fragility (35%) and concerns about developmental outcomes including the child's future (18%)., Conclusion: Parents report both positive and negative impacts after an extremely preterm birth, independent of disability. Introduction: Although relevant for precision pharmacovigilance, there are conflicting data on whether former preterm birth is associated with QT c-Bazett prolongation in later life., Methods: To explore QT c-Bazett interval differences between former preterm and/or extremely low birth weight (ELBW) cases and term-born controls in adolescence and young adulthood, we analyzed pooled individual data after a structured search on published cohorts. To test the absence of a QT c-Bazett difference, a non-inferiority approach was applied (one-sided, upper limit of the 95% confidence interval [CI] mean QT c-Bazett difference, 5 and 10 ms). We also investigated the impact of characteristics, either perinatal or at assessment, on QT c-Bazett in the full dataset (cases and controls). Data were reported as median and range., Results: The pooled dataset contained 164 former preterm and/or ELBW (cases) and 140 controls born full-term from three studies. The median QT c-Bazett intervals were 409 (335-490) and 410 (318-480) ms in cases and controls. The mean QT c-Bazett difference was 1 ms, with an upper 95% CI of 6 ms (p > 0.05 and p < 0.01 for 5 and 10 ms, respectively). In the full dataset, females had a significantly longer QT c-Bazett than males (415 vs. 401 ms; p < 0.0001)., Conclusions: QT c-Bazett intervals are not significantly different between former preterm and/or ELBW cases and term-born controls, and we rejected a potential prolongation > 10 ms in cases. Objectives: To explore decisional regret of parents of babies born extremely preterm and analyze neonatal, pediatric, and parental factors associated with regret., Study Design: Parents of infants born <29 weeks of gestational age, aged between 18 months and 7 years, attending neonatal follow-up were enrolled. Hospital records were reviewed to examine morbidities and conversations with parents about levels of care. Parents were asked the following question: "Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently?" Mixed methods were used to analyze responses., Results: In total, 248 parents (98% participation) answered, and 54% reported they did not have regret. Of those who reported regret (n = 113), 3 themes were most frequently invoked: 35% experienced guilt, thinking they were responsible for the preterm birth; 28% experienced regret about self-care decisions; and 20% regretted decisions related to their parental role, generally wishing they knew sooner how to get involved. None reported regret about life-and-death decisions made at birth or in the neonatal intensive care unit. Impairment at follow-up, gestational age, and decisions about levels/reorientation of care were not associated with regret. More mothers reported feeling guilt about the preterm birth (compared with fathers); parents of children with severe lesions on ultrasonography of the head were less likely to report regret., Conclusions: Approximately one-half of the parents of infants born extremely preterm had regrets regarding their neonatal intensive care unit stay. Aim: To describe pulmonary important outcomes (PIO) reported by parents of children born extremely preterm., Methods: Over 1-year, all parents of children aged 18 months-7-years born <29 weeks' GA were asked regarding their perspectives. The proportion of parents who described PIO and the themes they invoked were examined. Results were analysed using mixed methods., Results: Among parental responses (n = 285, 98% participation rate), 44% spoke about PIO, invoking 24 themes pertaining to NICU hospitalisation and/or long-term respiratory health. Some themes had an impact primarily on the child (e.g. exercise limitation), while the majority had an impact on the whole family (e.g. hospital readmissions). None mentioned oxygen at 36 weeks nor bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). The proportion of responses invoking PIO were statistically similar between parents of children with and without BPD, born before or after 25 weeks or with birthweight < or ≥750 g. PIO were more likely to be mentioned in males and among those readmitted for respiratory problems., Conclusion: Parents describe many PIO, most related to the functional impact of lung disease on their child (and family), rather than the diagnosis of BPD itself. Aim: To describe parental perspective on health and developmental outcomes of their preterm child in relation to level of neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI)., Methods: A parental survey about their children aged 15-36 months corrected age born ˂29 weeks' gestation investigated parental concerns and positive attributes. Parental responses in relation to their child's level of NDI were examined using Kruskal-Wallis and chi-square for trend tests., Results: One hundred ninety-nine parental responses were obtained for 163 children, including 44% with NDI. Vast majority of parents reported their children were developing well with good physical health. All parents, irrespective of NDI, reported their children were happy and had a positive personality. Appreciation of social interactions was higher for parents of children without versus with NDI (96% vs. 87%, p = 0.039). Parents of children with NDI were more likely to express concerns than those without NDI. Overall, development was the most common area of concern (45%), followed by the child's future (40%) and physical health (35%)., Conclusion: Parents of preterm children report many positive points and concerns, some of which are not examined in neonatal follow-up data. Background: Preterm birth may affect maternal mental health, yet most studies focus on postpartum mental disorders only. We explored the relationship between preterm delivery and the long-term risk of maternal hospitalization for mental illness after pregnancy., Methods: We performed a longitudinal cohort study of 1,381,300 women who delivered between 1989 and 2021 in Quebec, Canada, and had no prior history of mental illness. The exposure was preterm birth, including extreme (<28 weeks), very (28-31 weeks), and moderate to late (32-36 weeks). The outcome was subsequent maternal hospitalization for depression, bipolar, psychotic, stress and anxiety, personality disorders, and self-harm up to 32 years later. We used adjusted Cox proportional hazards models to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between preterm birth and mental illness hospitalization., Results: Compared with term, women who delivered preterm had a higher rate of mental illness hospitalization (3.81 vs. 3.01 per 1000 person-years). Preterm birth was associated with any mental illness (HR 1.38, 95% CI 1.35-1.41), including depression (HR 1.37, 95% CI 1.32-1.41), psychotic disorders (HR 1.35, 95% CI 1.25-1.44), and stress and anxiety disorders (HR 1.42, 95% CI 1.38-1.46). Delivery at any preterm gestational age was associated with the risk of mental hospitalization, but risks were greatest around 34 weeks of gestation. Preterm birth was strongly associated with mental illness hospitalization within 2 years of pregnancy, although associations persisted throughout follow-up., Conclusions: Women who deliver preterm may be at risk of mental disorders in the short and long term., (© 2022. Background and Objective: Neonatal outcome research and clinical follow-up principally focus on neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) after extremely preterm birth, as defined by the scientific community, without parental input. This survey aimed to investigate parental perspectives about the health and development of their preterm children., Methods: Parents of children aged 18 months to 7 years born <29 weeks' gestational age presenting at a neonatal follow-up clinic over a 1-year period were asked to evaluate their children's health and development. They were also asked the following question: 'if you could improve two things about your child, what would they be?' Responses were analysed using mixed methods. Logistic regressions were done to compare parental responses., Results: 248 parents of 213 children (mean gestational age 26.6±1.6 weeks, 20% with severe NDI) were recruited. Parents evaluated their children's health at a median of 9/10. Parental priorities for health improvements were (1) development, mainly behaviour, emotional health and language/communication (55%); (2) respiratory heath and overall medical fragility (25%); and (3) feeding/growth issues (14%). Nineteen per cent explicitly mentioned 'no improvements'. Parents were more likely to state 'no improvements' if child had no versus severe NDI OR 4.33 (95% CI 1.47 to 12.75)) or if parents had no versus at least a high school diploma (OR 4.01 (95% 1.99 to 8.10))., Conclusions: Parents evaluate the health of their preterm children as being very good, with positive perspectives. Pregnancy outcomes of women with serious injuries due to violence receive limited attention. We examined the association of assault before and during pregnancy with maternal and infant outcomes at delivery. We performed a retrospective cohort study of 2,193,711 births in Quebec, Canada between 1989 and 2016. We identified women who were hospitalized for physical assault, sexual assault, and assault with documented intimate partner violence before and during pregnancy. We examined adverse outcomes at delivery, including preeclampsia, placental abruption, antepartum hemorrhage, stillbirth, preterm birth, low birthweight, and other disorders. In log-binomial regression models, we estimated risk ratios (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between violence hospitalization and adverse birth outcomes, adjusted for potential confounders. Compared with no exposure, violence before or during pregnancy was associated with the future risk of placental abruption (RR 1.49, 95% CI 1.23-1.82), antepartum hemorrhage (RR 1.43, 95% CI 1.19-1.71), stillbirth (RR 1.83, 95% CI 1.27-2.63), preterm birth (RR 1.70, 95% CI 1.54-1.87), and low birthweight (RR 1.78, 95% CI 1.58-2.00). Physical assault, sexual assault, and assault with documented intimate partner violence were all associated with adverse outcomes. The risk of adverse outcomes was elevated regardless of timing and number of violence admissions, although associations were stronger for women hospitalized twice or more. Physical assault, sexual assault, and intimate partner violence are important risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes. Screening for violence in women of childbearing age and closer follow-up during pregnancy may help improve birth outcomes.

The emotional turmoil associated with extremely preterm birth is inescapable parents. How each parent handles the unexpected, makes sense of the unknown and learns to parent their child is uniquely personal. A rigid standardized approach to support families through their journey before and during neonatal intensive care disregards this individuality. This article reviews general concepts and practices that can be learned and applied by clinicians to promote resiliency and help parents cope adaptively. This review will describe how to personalize parenting support during the antenatal consultation and hospitalization for parents of extremely premature infants. To facilitate this, mindsets and care delivery models need to shift from inflexible standardized protocols to flexible guidelines that enable personalized communications, support structures and care delivery models tailored to each person's characteristics, preferences, and values., (Copyright © 2022. Neonatal follow-up studies traditionally report on long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes as a metric of success of neonatal intensive care. Research endpoints are also typically deficit-based, assessing whether disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, cognitive impairment, deafness or blindness, are present or not. These historical approaches have resulted in neonatal follow-up programs that narrowly focus on the early identification of neurodevelopmental problems, possibly to the detriment of other outcomes that matter to parents. This focus on neurodevelopmental disability may also contribute to the negative stereotypes associated with extreme preterm birth. In this article, we discuss parental perspectives regarding important long-term outcomes. Parents of preterm children are more likely to adopt non-optimal parenting behaviors than parents of full-term (FT) children. However, there is a lack of studies on parents of children born moderate to late preterm (MLP; 32-36 gestational weeks). In this study, we aimed to examine: (1) the association between MLP birth status and the trajectory of parental overprotection throughout preschool years, and (2) the role of parental overprotection, MLP birth status, and their interaction in the prediction of the trajectories of hyperactivity-impulsivity and inattention throughout childhood. Data comes from a Canadian representative population-based cohort including 2028 FT, 100 MLP children, and their parents. Overprotective parenting was measured when children were 5, 17, and 29 months old. Hyperactivity-impulsivity and inattention symptoms were measured repeatedly from 4 to 8 years of age. Trajectories of parents' overprotectiveness and children's hyperactivity-impulsivity and inattention were modeled. MLP birth status was associated with an increase in parental overprotectiveness across the preschool period. MLP birth status and parental overprotection were both found to be associated with higher levels of hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms across childhood. No interaction was found between birth status and parental overprotection. The results suggest that parents of MLP children become more overprotective across time compared to parents of FT children and that children born MLP and/or exposed to higher levels of parental overprotection demonstrated higher levels of hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms across childhood.

Background: Preterm birth occurs during a critical period of bone mineralization. We assessed whether preterm birth increases the risk of childhood fracture., Methods: We analyzed a cohort of 788,903 infants born between 2006 and 2016 in Quebec, Canada. The exposure was preterm birth (<37 weeks). The outcome was any future hospitalization for fracture before 2018. We estimated hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association of prematurity with fractures in adjusted Cox regression models. We determined if the risk of facture varied by the child's age., Results: The incidence of fracture hospitalizations was higher in preterm children than in term children (17.9 vs. 15.3 per 10,000 person-years). Compared with term, preterm children had 1.27 times the risk of femur fracture hospitalization (95% CI 1.01-1.60) and 2.27 times the risk of assault-related fractures (95% CI 1.37-3.76). Preterm children had 2.20 times the risk of femur fracture between 6 and 17 months of age (95% CI 1.45-3.35)., Conclusions: Preterm birth is associated with an increased risk of hospitalization for femur fractures and assault-related fractures. Associations are stronger before 18 months of age. Families of preterm children may benefit from counseling and support for fracture prevention during early childhood.

Background: Preterm birth has adverse consequences on the cardiovascular system. Whether premature birth is associated with conduction and repolarisation abnormalities past childhood and into adulthood still needs to be demonstrated., Methods: We analyzed the ECG of young adults (23.9 ± 3.1 years) born term (≥37 weeks, n = 53) and preterm (<30 weeks, n = 49) at rest, peak exercise and 3 min into recovery during an exercise test on a cycle ergometer. We measured PR, QRS and QT intervals, calculated the corrected QT (QTc), and determined blood calcium, magnesium, potassium and fasting glucose., Results: Mean gestational age was 39.7 ± 1.1 and 27.3 ± 1.3 weeks for the term and the preterm groups, respectively. Apart from an increased heart rate at rest in individuals born preterm, no significant difference was found between both groups for any other ECG parameters at rest. None of the participants had a severely prolonged QTc (>500 ms) at rest; exercise revealed severely prolonged QTc in two participants including one in the preterm group. The use of QT-prolonging medications did not influence ECG parameters in either groups., Conclusions: We observed no significant difference in electrocardiographic measurements between young adults born preterm and term. Current results do not support avoidance of QT-prolonging medications in individuals born preterm., Impact: Preterm birth is associated with adverse cardiovascular consequences in early adulthood, but controversial evidence exists regarding differences in electrocardiographic features between young individuals born term and preterm.This study aims to assess the differences in electrocardiographic features between young adults born term and preterm, at rest and during exercise training.In contrast with previously published data, we observed no significant difference in electrocardiographic measurements between young adults born preterm and term.Our study does not support that preterm birth itself exposes young adults to a higher risk of QT prolongation.Current results do not support avoidance of QT-prolonging medications in individuals born preterm.

Background: Although erythropoiesis is impaired and anaemia frequent in neonates born preterm, haematopoiesis in adults born preterm has not been previously studied., Objective: We, thus, aimed to evaluate haemoglobin and erythropoietin levels in young adults born preterm, to identify neonatal events associated with erythropoiesis in adulthood and to examine the relationships of haemoglobin levels with respiratory function and blood pressure., Methods: We assessed a cohort of 101 young adults (ages 18-29) born preterm (≤29 weeks of gestation), in comparison to 105 full-term controls. We measured haemoglobin, erythropoietin levels and blood pressure. We also assessed respiratory function using spirometry., Results: Compared with controls, tobacco use and sex-adjusted haemoglobin levels were 5.3 (95% CI 2.9 to 7.7) g/L higher in preterm-born individuals, but erythropoietin levels were similar. Duration of oxygen supplementation in the neonatal period was independently associated with higher haemoglobin levels in the preterm group. In young adults born preterm with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, airflow limitation was associated with higher haemoglobin levels. Both systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure were increased in individuals born preterm (p=0.042 and p=0.0008, respectively). Higher haemoglobin levels were associated with higher SBP and DBP, independently of term or preterm status. Mediation analysis suggests that haemoglobin increase contributes to 37% and 32% of the effect of preterm birth on SBP and DBP, respectively., Conclusions: Haemoglobin levels are higher in young adults born preterm, while erythropoietin levels are similar, especially in case of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and airflow limitation, and haemoglobin increase is associated with elevated blood pressure in this population., Competing Interests: Competing interests: None declared., (© Author(s) (or their employer(s)) 2020. Introduction: Risk of developing a malignancy when born premature is unknown. We hypothesised that risk of certain cancers might be increased in youth born preterm versus term. We therefore performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the incidence of malignancy in the context of preterm birth, according to various cancer types., Methods: The study was designed per MOOSE and PRISMA guidelines. Articles were identified through November 2015. Observational studies exploring the association between childhood malignancy and birth characteristics were included. Of the 1658 records identified, 109 full text articles were evaluated for eligibility. Random effects meta-analyses were conducted on 10/26 studies retained; 95% confidence intervals were computed and adjusted following sensitivity analysis. Publication bias was evaluated using funnel plots, Begg's and Egger's tests., Results: No differences in risk of primary central nervous system tumor [OR 1.05; 95% CI 0.93-1.17, 5 studies, 580 cases] and neuroblastoma [OR 1.09; 95% CI 0.90-1.32, 5 studies, 211 cases] were observed in individuals born <37 versus ≥37 weeks' gestation. Preterm birth was consistently associated with hepatoblastoma [ORs 3.12 (95% CI 2.32-4.20), 1.52 (95% CI 1.1-2.1), 1.82 (95% CI 1.01-3.26), and 2.65 (95% CI 1.98-3.55)], but not leukemia, astrocytoma, ependymoma, medulloblastoma, lymphoma, nephroblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, retinoblastoma or thyroid cancer., Conclusions: Children born premature may be at increased risk for hepatoblastoma but there is no strong evidence of an increased risk of primary central nervous system tumours or neuroblastoma. Preterm birth incurs a higher risk for adult cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension. Because preterm birth may impact nephrogenesis, study objectives were to assess renal size and function of adults born preterm versus full term and to examine their relationship with blood pressure (BP; 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring) and circulating renin-Ang (angiotensin) system peptides. The study included 92 young adults born (1987-1997) preterm (≤29 weeks of gestation) and term (n=92) matched for age, sex, and race. Young adults born preterm had smaller kidneys (80±17 versus 90±18 cm 3 /m 2 ; P<0.001), higher urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (0.70; interquartile range, 0.47-1.14 versus 0.58, interquartile range 0.42 to 0.78 mg/mmol, P=0.007), higher 24-hour systolic (121±9 versus 116±8 mm Hg; P=0.001) and diastolic (69±5 versus 66±6 mm Hg; P=0.004) BP, but similar estimated glomerular filtration rate. BP was inversely correlated with kidney size in preterm participants. Plasma Ang I was higher in preterm versus term participants (36.3; interquartile range, 13.2-62.3 versus 19.4; interquartile range, 9.9-28.1 pg/mL; P<0.001). There was no group difference in renin, Ang II, Ang (1-7), and alamandine. In the preterm, but not in the term group, higher BP was significantly associated with higher renin and alamandine and lower birth weight and gestational age with smaller adult kidney size. Young adults born preterm have smaller kidneys, higher urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio, higher BP, and higher circulating Ang I levels compared with term controls. Extremely preterm babies are exposed to various sources of injury during critical stages of development. The extremely preterm infant faces premature transition to ex utero physiology and undergoes adaptive mechanisms that may be deleterious in the long term because of permanent alterations in organ structure and function. Perinatal events can also directly cause structural injury. These disturbances induce morphologic and functional changes in their organ systems that might heighten their risks for later adult chronic diseases. Preterm birth severely disrupts the normal developmental maturation of organ systems, resulting in lasting adverse effects. High blood pressure, cardiac dysfunction, obstructive lung disease, elevated blood glucose, and mental health problems occur earlier and at higher rates in the preterm-born than in the term populations. Disadvantageous health conditions may have a significant impact on the well-being of preterm-born individuals from childhood through adulthood. Preterm birth is associated with alteration of the vascular tree that can result in disease states such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia and retinopathy of prematurity during the neonatal period and emphysema and hypertension in adulthood. Studies have suggested a potential role for endothelial progenitor cells in the pathophysiology of prematurity-related complications involving blood vessels; however, this knowledge has never been synthesized. We conducted a systematic review of the published data to examine the characteristics of endothelial progenitor cells in relation to preterm birth in humans. Preterm infants compared with term controls displayed similar or increased circulating/cord blood endothelial progenitor cell counts. However, the preterm endothelial progenitor cells were more vulnerable to exogenous factors such as oxidative stress. A reduced number, in particular of endothelial colony-forming cells, was associated with bronchopulmonary dysplasia. No studies have examined endothelial progenitor cells beyond the neonatal period. These findings could prove useful in the identification of biomarkers for prognostication or therapeutic strategies for vascular-related diseases in preterm-born individuals. Factors in perinatal life have recently been recognized as determinants of later life health and diseases, especially hypertension. The detection of higher values of blood pressure in preterm-born individuals reaching adulthood has turned the attention to preterm birth-related complications and deleterious conditions as factors triggering early cardiovascular alterations, which may increase hypertension risk and associated complications in this population. Further, preterm birth is frequently associated with pregnancy complications such as lower placental perfusion, increased blood pressure in the mother and preeclampsia, often resulting in intrauterine growth restriction. These conditions further impact the risk of hypertension in the offspring whether through inherited genetic factors or perpetuated pathophysiology leading to preeclampsia, preterm delivery, and chronic hypertension. In this review, we will highlight evidence of developmental cardiovascular alterations and potential mechanisms linking preterm birth to the risk of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases into adulthood.

Aim Methods Results Conclusion To examine the relationship between preterm birth and hospitalisation for paediatric complex chronic conditions.We conducted a cohort study of 1 269 745 children born between 2006 and 2022 in Quebec, Canada. We classified preterm birth as extreme (<28 weeks), very (28–31 weeks), and moderate (32–36 weeks). The outcome was hospitalisation for complex chronic conditions, including neurologic, neuromuscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal, haematologic, immunologic, endocrine, and neoplastic disorders up to 16 years of age. We computed adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between preterm birth and complex chronic conditions during 9 948 734 person‐years of follow‐up.Hospitalisation rates for complex chronic conditions were higher for children born preterm than at term (6.88 vs. 2.24 per 1000 person‐years). Preterm birth was associated with all complex chronic conditions, especially respiratory (HR 4.64, 95% CI 4.01–5.37), cardiovascular (HR 3.68, 95% CI 3.47–3.90), and neurologic disorders (HR 3.48, 95% CI 3.21–3.77). Associations were present at all ages and for all degrees of prematurity, but were strongest with extreme prematurity.Preterm birth increases the risk of hospitalisation for complex chronic conditions up to age 16 years.
