INTRODUCTION There is a wide variation in the knowledge related to oral radiology. This study aims to assess the prior knowledge of radiology among freshman dental students prior to beginning any formal dental school instruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS 139 newly matriculated freshman dental students were asked to complete a seven-question radiology take home survey regarding their prior knowledge. The questionnaire was built within their course site and was presented prior to beginning the radiology lectures. RESULTS The responses were varied for all seven questions based on previous experiences and existing knowledge. Significant variation was noted in responses to Q4, Q6, and Q7 as opposed to Qs 1-3 and 5. Many students believed that the acquisition of radiographs should be selective. The acquisition of radiographs in pregnant women yielded comments in line with the belief that dose and frequency of radiation exposure would impact the health of the pregnant woman and developing fetus. Additionally, many students agreed with the statement regarding orthodontists over-radiating children as reported in the New York Times. Perceptions based on social media and news outlets needs to be addressed and changed in a dental school setting based on evidence. CONCLUSION Dental school instruction must use the cues from surveys similar to that used in this research and structure their instruction to increase the critical teaching of radiology. The eventual goal of such an instruction would be to have a scientifically accurate information and remove the perceptions that the students came with when they began their dental education.

Purpose: This research note evaluated the collaboration, recruitment, enrollment processes, as well as outcomes of an online, self-managed parent training program (Success With Stories [SWS]) concurrent with a Head Start school curriculum. Method: This case examination presents the research processes used to examine an online program concurrent with Head Start school programming. Challenges, outcomes, and next steps in the process were evaluated. The engagement of parents who completed the program was examined. Results: Collaborative processes were developed, and recruitment strategies were initiated. Of the 92 parents who expressed immediate interest, 38 registered and 16 consented but only seven completed the program. Of the parents who completed the program, survey data revealed high levels of parent satisfaction, motivation, and perceived competence. Conclusions: Results indicate a breakdown in the recruitment, enrollment, and completion processes. Results indicate that SWS has promised to address target areas with the intended audience. However, online interventions are only useful if they are accessed and completed. Future directions to increase program completion are discussed.

Purpose: The purpose of this exploratory study was to obtain documentation about interpretive interactions that include speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and interpreters in public schools, including information on best practices and difficulties. Method: Seven California public school SLPs were interviewed by the authors using preset questions. Their responses were transcribed, then coded into 55 codes, and then combined into six different themes. Results: Results included the following six themes: (a) interpreter roles, (b) SLPs' characteristics or actions, (c) characteristics of effective interactions, (d) interpreters' positive characteristics or actions, (e) characteristics of ineffective interactions, and (f) interpreters' negative characteristics or actions. Some of the positive characteristics or actions reported about some interpreters included direct translation without adding, changing, or deleting information, knowledge of professional vocabulary, training as an interpreter, and demonstrating empathy. In addition, the majority of respondents stated that they used the briefing, interaction, and debriefing process in interpreted interactions. Conclusions: It was concluded that additional training of SLPs and interpreters was indicated. Given the small sample, generalizability is limited, but there is a need for further research, especially given that the quality of bilingual assessments and individualized education program rests directly on the skills of effective interpretation.

Childhood trauma has well-documented negative effects on children, including in the school setting. First Nations students are disproportionately exposed to trauma. However, limited research has explored teachers’ experiences in response to trauma-affected First Nations students. This study aimed to explore teachers’ experiences of supporting First Nations students with a trauma history. Ten teachers and school staff were interviewed using a semi-structured interview schedule, and the interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. Six themes emerged from the interviews: (1) The Landscape of Trauma; (2) The Impact of Trauma; (3) Trust and Relationships; (4) An Individualised Approach; (5) Red Tape; and (6) The Silver Lining. Results showed that culturally responsive training is required to equip schools to support First Nations students with a trauma background. Future research should also evaluate the effectiveness of trauma-informed programs with marginalised student populations.

PurposeTeachers are exposed to many stressors. Compared to other occupational groups, they are more frequently affected by psychosomatic complaints. In recent decades, numerous prevention and intervention measures for promoting health have been developed and implemented for this target group. However, it remains unclear how the uptake of health-promotion measures (HPMs) by teachers can be increased in order to prevent stress-related disorders. This paper examines two facets of health literacy—health awareness and health value—in terms of their importance in both the take-up and intended take-up of HPMs.Design/methodology/approachIn the 2017/2018 school year, data were collected by paper and pencil from a representative sample of 830 teachers across all school types in the German State of Brandenburg.FindingsTeachers who place great value on their own health show significantly higher levels of take-up and intended take-up of HPMs. The findings regarding health awareness are more heterogeneous. Further associations were found with age and psychosocial stress.Originality/valueWhile there has been growing academic interest in developing HPMs for teachers, there has been relatively little focus on the factors that may influence the implementation and uptake of these measures. The paper contributes to addressing this gap by shedding light on the relevance of two facets of health literacy. Strengthening the perceived importance of health could be a starting point for increasing the use of HPMs by teachers and thus improving their health.

The purpose of this study was to explore the phenomena of participation in a democratic large ensemble experience in a secondary public school setting. Specific research questions included (a) Do high school band students feel capable of performing a music work without teacher intervention? (b) In what ways do high school band students describe the experience of performing in a student-led large ensemble? (c) What music decisions were most often made by high school band students in a student-led large ensemble? and (d) Were there any changes in high school students’ perceptions of autonomy following a student-led large ensemble music rehearsal and performance experience? Findings illustrated that the democratic experience increased student autonomy and music discrimination across larger distances in the classroom as students listened to other nonsimilar sections. Furthermore, student voice, self-efficacy, and personal affect also increased as a result of the experience. Students felt empowered to offer their rehearsal critiques; however, a lingering concern is that participants continued to feel that their peers would not listen to their opinions on rehearsal issues or strategy usage.

The learning styles theory is spread across the education field, despite previous research, especially from cognitive neuroscience, that concluded the lack of empirical support in its use in teaching. In this study, we used a survey to analyse the perception of learning styles in different professionals working in the Portuguese educational system. We recruited 136 participants, between the ages of 22 and 68 years (M=38,5 years; SD=10,51), 95% of them were female. The average of working experience it is 13.8 years (SD= 9.15). We analysed the answers of three groups of professional from different specializations, Teachers (n=42), Psychologists (n=44) and Speech-Language Pathologists (n=50) and no differences were found in their answers since all the groups scored above 80% as they classified as fact the benefits of teaching by learning styles. Our empirical data stand aligned with the scientific literature, suggesting that the learning styles myth is widely present in the school setting, affecting other professions beyond teachers. With this undistinguishable knowledge despite specialization, we discuss this bias's probable impact in the educational contexts.

Objectives-\ud \ud Arts on Prescription (AoP) programmes were among the first forms of social prescribing in the UK. Most of the studies of AoP programmes focus on adults and currently there is no published research on the impact of AoP on children and young people. This study investigates the impact of 10 weekly AoP workshops delivered in a school setting on the mental well-being and resilience of adolescents aged 13–16 years at risk of emotional or behavioural problems.\ud \ud Study design-\ud \ud The study design used is a longitudinal cohort study of an AoP programme implemented in 10 schools in the East of England.\ud \ud Methods-\ud \ud Changes in mental well-being and resilience of school children were assessed using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS), and the True Resilience Scale applied pre- and post-intervention, with follow-up at 3 months. In total, 91 young people participated in the programme and 65 completed pre- and post-intervention measures.\ud \ud Results-\ud \ud Data from the WEMWBS and True Resilience Scale indicated that the AoP Programme had a positive impact on both well-being and resilience of participants with a statistically significant increase recorded immediately post-intervention. However, these improvements were not sustained upon observation at 3-month follow-up.\ud \ud Conclusion-\ud \ud This article presents the first indication of the effectiveness of a programme of AoP workshops on the mental well-being and resilience of children and young people. It suggests the potential of AoP as a means of support the mental health and well-being of secondary school aged children.

Purpose: The study aimed to determine the respondents’ beliefs and practices in the implementation of PETAs. Approach/Methodology/Design: This is a quantitative study wherein statistical treatments such as mean and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) are utilized. A self-made questionnaire was used that underwent a validity and reliability test. The participants of this study were selected from the seven Senior High School with a tertiary level in the University belt area in the city of Manila. Findings: Results indicated that the commonly held beliefs of the respondents are consistent with the premises of PETAs described by Department of Education and by the literature reviewed in this study. This shows that teachers implement PETAs that are real-life applications of learning. Even though there are difficulties in implementing this type of assessment the respondents apply it in their classes not only because it is mandated by the Department of Education but because they have high beliefs in PETAs being a valid and meaningful way to assess learning. Practical Implications: The study can serve as a basis for the development of an enhancement program for proper implementation and management of PETAs for senior high school teachers. Originality/value: Much research may have been conducted regarding PETAs particularly in the foreign setting, but there is much dearth of literature on this topic in the Philippines particularly in the Senior High School setting. It is expected that most of the research efforts of the Department of Education will focus on studying the many aspects of the K to 12 programs such as the efficacy of the curriculum and instruction. Interestingly, the implementation of the PETAs could be one of those aspects that need empirical data for policymaking in the future.

Disciplining preschool-aged children is pivotal since it helps parents to introduce rules and basis to face challenges in life. Students in RA Baiturrahman Tasikmalaya tend to exhibit a discipline attitude. The present study aimed to investigate how students’ parents and children applied discipline character. To this end, a qualitative descriptive method was applied. The participants of the study were recruited using proportional sampling technique. The data were collected through observation and interviews. The obtained data were analyzed. The data analysis process includes data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing of conclusion. The result of the study revealed that parents and teachers implemented conditioning and modeling to internalize the character. In the school setting, teacher internalize the character based on Islamic values in a structured manner.

Purpose School-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are responsible for providing services to about 55% of students with disabilities in the school setting across the nation. A shortage of qualified school-based SLPs continues to persist in the United States. Research has aimed to identify factors that lead to diminished career intentions, occupational stress, and ultimately, job burnout. However, there is a dearth of literature regarding the prevention of job burnout in the school setting. In this tutorial, we provide school-based SLPs with strategies that aim to reduce and prevent burnout symptoms related to occupational stress and satisfaction. We (a) define and describe burnout, (b) discuss the possible stressors and job-related challenges that are within SLPs' control of change, (c) provide evidence-based strategies that may alleviate occupational stress related to workload factors before and after burnout has occurred, and (d) provide examples of ways to advocate within the profession. Conclusions SLPs are encouraged to make minor adjustments in their work settings. Suggested strategies include recognizing overwhelm, incorporating broader and workload-specific changes to daily routines, and engaging in advocacy efforts. Two resources, one for evaluation and another for consolidating information about a caseload, are provided.

Educators recognize that parental participation is a critical factor in the success of children within a school setting. This is particularly true for parents who have children with disabilities or who are from a culturally or linguistically diverse background. However, reaching out to these families can be a difficult task even for the most empathetic and concerned educator. And while communicating directly with individual parents about their children’s academic and social welfare provides some degree of effective engagement and communication between them and the school, the parents often remain isolated from the concerns and thoughts of other parents who are in similar situations. The Delphi process described in this article creates a collaborative workspace that moves parents from being a “watcher” of school policy or school-based decisions to a “developer” of school policy or school-based decisions. The article outlines and illustrates the steps in the process and further elaborates through an ongoing commentary depicting the creation and implementation of a Delphi with the goal of better engagement with parents.

The influence of emotion on thoughts, memories, behaviors and everyday decisions is currently being researched across multiple disciplines of psychology. Children and adolescents are not born with the skills needed to regulate their emotions; these skills are something learned over time. However, some children are never properly taught these skills, which can cause difficulties in the school environment because they are more likely to experience problems both academically and behaviorally. This paper explores the possible benefits of offering mental health services in schools that are focused towards promoting emotional health while also developing emotional regulation skills for children. Beginning with the ways in which children learn to express their emotions and the factors that contribute to an inability to express emotion appropriately, to the influence of emotions on academic performance, how emotional regulation skills can benefit academic success, how we can best build these emotional regulation skills in the school setting, discussion of Emotion Regulation Therapy (ERT) which is an example of a service that could be used, the importance of parental involvement when offering these types of services and concluding with possible obstacles that could interfere with the effectiveness of these services in the school setting

BACKGROUND: Spinal pain is one of the leading causes of morbidity globally. There is an increase in the number of children and adolescents who experience spinal pain and the lifetime prevalence of adolescent spinal pain varies between countries. In Africa, one in two adolescents experiences spinal pain and the prevalence is increasing. OBJECTIVE: This study reports on the knowledge and perspectives of school-attending children, adolescents, teachers, and parents/guardians regarding spinal health. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive qualitative case study with an interpretative and phenomenological approach. Data coding, management and analysis was done using ATLAS.ti computer software. RESULTS: Ninety-three participants (66 women and 27 men) were enrolled in the study. The barriers associated with students’ spinal health were multifactorial, including low levels of physical activity, dangerous gameplay, sports risks, poor ergonomics, school bags, insufficient knowledge, and pregnancy risks. Participants proposed strategies to improve spinal health including the provision of students’ lockers, advice on appropriate school bag types, embedding spinal education in the curriculum, general advocacy for spinal health, and integration of technology in teaching and learning. CONCLUSION: There is a need for further engagement on school-based spinal health promotion programs that consider local socio-economic, educational, and cultural factors.

This article focuses on children’s perspectives of belonging to a place, in this case a Finnish preprimary school setting. This study explores “place-belonging” in photographs originally taken by the children in their preprimary school activities. “Photo-telling” was applied as a methodology to link narrative and visual approaches. The research data consist of 13 children’s photographs and group discussions, in which the children viewed the photographs with the researcher. The study shows that children’s belonging in the preprimary school was intertwined with various elements of the setting, including the people, activities, materiality, and institutional and cultural practices. The findings show how the children can make places of their own and contribute to the setting, how they build their own places, and how these places and associated structures affect the children’s actions. Play allows the children to gain familiarity and attachment to places, materials, and peers, hence building a sense of belonging to the preprimary school as a setting. Children’s photographs and storytelling activities provide educators with a significant means to support and understand children’s perspectives on place and belonging.

This paper describes a focus group approach to curriculum consultation and gathering data for the purposes of research within a primary school setting. The aim of the research was to explore teachers’ and parents’ attitudes towards Relationships and Sex Education for Key Stage 1 children and to examine how these align with the way children of this age (5–7 years old) construct, experience and perceive their sexuality and gender. At the same time, the focus groups served as a consultation process for the development of a KS1 RSE curriculum within the school. This approach allowed adults to discuss, develop and change their perspectives and consider their own attitudes and behaviours. It also ensured that children’s prior knowledge, understanding and lived experiences were the starting point of the development of the new curriculum.

Mental health challenges (including mood, anxiety, and behavioral disorders) affect up to one-fifth of adolescents ages 13–18. Although these disorders are associated with impairments in psychological, academic, social, and family domains, they are often left untreated. Schools have great potential to address this service-underutilization gap by identifying those students at risk through mental health screening tools and by providing treatment at no cost for students. However, at the secondary level, school personnel partly expect high school students to initiate support for themselves. The present study advances research by exploring the variables related to adolescent mental health help-seeking intentions within the school setting. Specifically, this study assesses the utility of the theory of planned behavior in an effort to identify what factors relate to high school students' willingness to seek help at school. A secondary aim of this study was to examine why adolescent boys are consistently less willing to seek help for mental health problems than adolescent girls. Results of this study highlight important factors to target when developing interventions to increase help-seeking intent in high school students.

The effects of a multiple schedule of reinforcement for two children with autism spectrum disorder who engaged in problem behavior were evaluated in a school setting. Following functional behavior assessments, functional communication training was provided to teach a replacement behavior for requesting preferred items. Next, we introduced a fixed-sequence multiple schedule of reinforcement with one S-Delta within a reversal design. One child’s problem behavior was reduced with the initial treatment, but the other child required the addition of an alternative activity procedure. Resurgence of problem behavior was observed with the child whose treatment did not include an alternative activity procedure. Generalized responding across teachers and settings was demonstrated for one of the two children. The addition of an alternative activity was necessary for one child. The use of an alternative activity in a multiple schedule of reinforcement intervention may facilitate generalized responding.

The philosophy of inclusion is not new to India. It was very much there in the ancient times when all children were sent to ‘gurukuls’ for education. In today's context also, the emphasis is on providing education to all children in an inclusive environment. Inclusive education means education of all children, with and without disabilities together in regular schools. It is an approach, which takes into account unique characteristics, interests, abilities and learning needs of all children. It is an attempt to meet the unique needs of every child in a regular school setting where all children, including those with disability, try to participate in all facets of school life. The goal is to provide accommodating and personalized education for all students within the context of a general educational classroom. The need of the hour is to develop a universal design of learning which makes learning joyful for all children.

Resumen La práctica docente del profesorado falto de experiencia es el proceso de construcción de hechos en el contexto escolar, con el propósito de desarrollar competencias para la atención educativa. En tiempos de contingencia, iniciarla en aislamiento en casa dirige al estudiantado novel en educación inclusiva a llevarla a cabo en escenarios virtuales que permiten la construcción de vivencias que serán parte de su preparación profesional. El objetivo de este artículo es reflexionar sobre el complejo proceso en la formación de inicio, donde, a través de la investigación etnográfica, se logre conocer, desde los testimonios del estudiantado, la forma en la que recapacita la primera aproximación a la distancia durante el ciclo escolar 2020-2021. Este documento concluye en la idea de que las personas que estudian crean pensamientos acerca del ser profesional de la educación aún en encierro, así como un concepto de identidad en cuanto a ser docente en tiempos confusos. Abstract Teaching practices of less experienced teachers build on events within the school setting to help hone and develop better teaching skills. During contingencies, novice teachers have had to teach online due to the lockdown, thereby creating their own experience and initial training in an unconventional setting. The objective of this article is to reflect on this complex process. As a result of ethnographic research, student testimonies convey their perception about distance learning during the 2020-2021 school year. As a result, it is revealed that student teachers create thoughts about teaching under lockdown, thereby establishing the concept of their own teaching identity even during these uncertain times.

In this paper, we examine teacher beliefs and advocacy intentions in relation to provision of social and emotional learning (SEL) and gender and respectful relationships (G&RR) education. Using multivariate binary logistic regression analysis, we examine the impacts of gender, teaching experience and school setting on (1) teachers’ beliefs about the significance of teaching for SEL and G&RR, and (2) their intentions to advocate for program implementation in their schools. Data were collected from a survey of 293 Australian teachers (137 primary and 156 secondary teachers) at exit from 13 two-day professional learning workshops aimed to foster readiness to teach a SEL and G&RR education program. The findings show significant differences remain post-training in beliefs and advocacy intentions on the basis of teacher gender, experience and location in a primary or secondary school setting. Females, teachers with 10 or more years of experience, and those teaching in primary schools demonstrate stronger beliefs in and greater intention to advocate for the implementation of SEL and G&RR education. We discuss the implications of these findings in relation to developing a deeper understanding of the ways in which gender and institutional norms might work to constrain or enable provision of SEL and G&RR education.

Students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are incredibly vulnerable to poor post-school outcomes. Two mandates, the Higher Education Opportunity Act and Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, have emerged that may provide avenues to counter the discrepancy between the desire for career and college paths and actualization of employment and enrollment. The authors explore these legislative acts, their impact on transition services for students with IDD, and how school personnel can collaborate to create family, school, and community partnerships. Based on these acts, a practice framework, and the unique transition needs of students with IDD, practice recommendations are provided. Specific strategies for promoting application of these laws in the school setting are offered. Special attention is given to the partnership between special educators and school psychologists to help them navigate the legal implications for students with IDD and their families.

Typically students in their final year of school report high levels of anxiety, depression and stress. This study evaluated Study without Stress, a group cognitive behavioural program to reduce student stress. Fifty-six final year students (77% female) from four Australian secondary schools were randomly allocated to Study without Stress delivered by school staff, or to an 8-week usual care condition. Changes in self-reported stress, anxiety, depression, self-efficacy, and teacher reported emotional problems were assessed pre to post-treatment using intent-to-treat analyses. Maintenance of changes were examined 3-months later. Compared to usual care, Study without Stress led to significant reductions in self-reported stress and distress, and increases in self-efficacy that were maintained over time, with no significant changes in anxiety, depression or teacher reported emotional problems. Study without Stress is beneficial for reducing academic stress and improving self-efficacy in final year students when delivered in a school setting.

Check-In Check-Out (CICO) is an evidence-based Tier 2 intervention that has most often been used to support students who exhibit externalizing problem behaviors; however, emerging research suggests that CICO may be effective when extended to students who are engaging in internalizing problem behaviors (CICO-IB). The purpose of this study was to replicate previous research using CICO to support students with internalizing behaviors as well as to extend the research using a standardized Daily Progress Report (DPR) for all students. A multiple baseline design across students was used to examine the effects of CICO-IB on social and academic engagement with four elementary students from an urban U.S. elementary school who were exhibiting internalizing behavior problems (e.g., shyness, social withdrawal). Results indicated that CICO-IB was effective in improving active academic and social engagement for all four students included in the study as measured by both teacher rating on a DPR and direct observation. Overall, the majority of teachers, parents, and students found the intervention socially acceptable. Implications for future research and practice with students who are at risk or exhibiting emotional/behavioral disorders along with limitations are discussed.

The use of mindfulness as a tool to improve mental health has received increased attention. Schools provide ideal environments for short-term prevention and skill development for mental health. Further, teachers can promote and reinforce students’ daily use of mindfulness. This study explored the effects of a short-term group mindfulness-based intervention on the mental health of adolescents who have experienced trauma. A total of 49 high school students received a mindfulness-based intervention session followed by homework and teacher reinforcement. The results suggest that a short-term group intervention for mindfulness can potentially improve mindfulness attention awareness and reduce depression and anxiety symptoms in adolescents. As there was no control group, additional research examining the effectiveness of the intervention is essential.

This paper focused on six adolescent Australian schoolboys with ADHD, their perspectives about managing and maintaining friendships at school and why the classroom environment was challenging for them. Utilising qualitative phenomenographical methodology, data were collected using semi-structured individual and focus group interviews. Findings suggested that these Australian adolescent boys experienced some difficulty making and managing friends in primary school but were able to maintain a small friendship group in secondary school. For them, the classroom was a challenging environment both in the primary and secondary school setting, but specific teacher/teaching strategies assisted each boy to better concentrate and focus on the learning process.

The aim is to contribute knowledge about the ways in which Swedish pupils with a migrant background speak about school performances and their first experiences of being graded. The results describe pupils and parents as positioned as being lower down in a top-down relationship vis-à-vis school. The separation between home and school is best described as robust. Some pupils want and ask for a better school-home relationship because they think it would harmonise the relationship with their parents and facilitate their school work. The main conclusion is that pupils find themselves in a vulnerable position between schools’/tea- chers’ demands and parents’ aspirations for them. Objective: To ascertain teachers’ articulation and experiences of navigating dilemmas that inhibit and/or enable the fostering of health literacy in primary school settings. Design: Qualitative analysis of teachers’ written reflections on introducing health literacy into their school and classroom. Setting: Tasmania, Australia. Method: Eighty-four teachers in five primary schools participated in the HealthLit4Kids programme. Teacher reflections were collected at the conclusion of the first year of the programme and assessed using Windschitl’s Dilemmas to identify recurrent themes raised by the conceptual, pedagogic, cultural and political dilemmas teachers faced. Results: Key dilemmas faced by teachers concerned the development of a whole-of-school approach, student engagement and professional development. Conclusion: Internationally few health literacy programmes for primary schools exist. The theory developed from the themes identified in this study will inform future health literacy programme design and implementation strategies. Purposeful consideration of each theme will guide their success, scalability and sustainability. Future research on the role of constructivist teaching styles in health literacy development in the school setting is urgently required.

Aims To analyze the association between moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) and AP in adolescents, considering potential confounding variables of school setting and self-concept in adolescents. Method The final sample was composed of 394 students (186 boys) with a mean age of 11.3 (SD= 0.8) years. The school grades were used as an indicator of AP. Measurements of body mass and stature were collected, and the body mass index was calculated and converted intoz-score values. Maternal education, socioeconomic status, self-concept, and variables of the school setting were self-reported. MVPA and sedentary behavior (SB) were measured through accelerometry (GT3X and GT3X+; ActiGraph, Pensacola, Florida). Multiple linear regression was used for the association analyses, adoptingp< .05. Results MVPA was inversely associated with global AP and mathematics only for girls: beta = -.105 (95% CI [-0.205, -0.006];p= .038); beta = -.136 (95% CI [-0.261, -0.011];p= .033). After adjusting for the school setting and self-concept, these significant associations disappear. Discussion MVPA was inversely associated with global AP and mathematics only for girls regardless of age,z-score body mass index, maternal education, socioeconomic status, and SB. However, after adjusting for school setting and self-concept, theses association disappear in mathematics and global AP, respectively. Conclusion The device-measured MVPA was not associated with AP after controlling for important variables (school setting and self-concept). The advantages of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and insulin pump systems have increased the popularity of these devices among students in the school setting. The use of diabetes technology at school and school-sponsored activities strengthens the student’s consistent use of the technology and increases the overall beneficial effects. The school nurse has many considerations when supporting the student with diabetes technology. Integrating this technology into diabetes care at school can be complex with collaboration and safety considerations fundamental to success. This is the third article in a three-part series on the use of technology in managing diabetes in youth. The first article described CGM devices and provided tips for the school nurse in incorporating CGM into the student’s individualized healthcare plan. The second article summarized insulin pump technologies, from conventional insulin pump therapy to advance automated insulin delivery systems and described keys to success with insulin pump technologies. The purpose of this article is to address some special considerations for facilitating the use of diabetes technology in the school setting. Topics to be discussed are tips on including insulin pump therapy in the student’s individualized healthcare plan, safe use of diabetes technology during physical activity, and implications for school nursing practice.

To date, little research has systematically considered the ways in which schools can better address the needs of immigrant-origin youth (IOY). Further, considering the increased negative attitudes toward and policies targeting IOY and families within the U.S., there is a need to go beyond targeting just IOY at risk for mental health concerns and promote a culture of inclusion throughout the school. The goal of this paper is to address ways in which schools can best attend to the mental health needs of IOY by systematically integrating prevention and intervention efforts across three tiers of support within the school setting. Specifically, we propose a three-tiered model of school based mental health services for IOY. Based on a thorough review of current literature, we propose universal, selective, and targeted programming to support the MH needs of IOY and families. We discuss implications for implementation as well as future directions for research.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of an intervention selection model on the outcomes of function-based interventions for escape-maintained problem behavior. The study included five children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and was conducted in a school setting. We conducted functional analyses to determine the function of problem behavior. BCBAs and special educators then independently used the intervention selection model to select an indicated intervention for each participant, with agreement as to the selected intervention in four of five cases. We then implemented identified function-based interventions resulting in reductions in problem behavior and acquisition of an appropriate replacement behavior for all participants. This study has implications for practitioners seeking to reduce problem behavior of students with ASD in school settings.
