The pineapple leaves (PL) left over in the fields after pineapple harvest or burnt out, generate waste which contributes to the release of greenhouse gases. As pineapple is one of the most harvested crops in the world, the quantity of pineapple trash and its disposal methods are challenging. The composition of PL waste makes it unique to encounter the increasing demand for renewable energy and other useful products. This review is focused on the production of different biorefinery products and miscellaneous products from PL waste. The high cellulose content in PL makes it a potential feedstock for the production of different biorefinery products like bioethanol, oligosaccharides, nitrocellulose, and humic acid apart from this, waste is also useful for the production of different products like pineapple leaf fibres, fake eyelashes, organic leather, pulp and paper. Although the opportunities, future perspectives, and challenges concerning PL waste utilization to value-added goods were also addressed. The pulp and paper industry is increasingly seeking a sustainable and conscientious development, minimizing the environmental impacts caused by it. Therefore, reducing efficiently the number of stages used in the bleaching process can mean less consumption of water and chemical reagents, contributing to the reduction of harmful waste to the environment. Thus, this study sought to evaluate the pulp quality and some physical-mechanical properties (smoothness, tear and tensile indexes) of two new bleaching sequences A*DP and A*E*DP and compare them with the reference D0(E+P)D1P. To do so, industrial eucalyptus Kraft pulp pre-delignified with oxygen was used. The bleached pulp was refined to 1200, 1800 and 2400, in PFI mill and tested according to TAPPI standards to determine smoothness, tear and tensile indexes. Based on the results obtained, it was verified that the sequences studied are viable for using in bleaching plants, which allowed a reduction in the chlorine dioxide consumption and presented satisfactory smoothness, tear and tensile indexes for paper. The dimensional stability of paper products is a well-known problem, affecting multiple engineering applications. The macroscopic response of paper to moisture variations is governed by complex mechanisms originating in the material at all length-scales down to the fiber-level. Therefore, a recently-developed method, based on Global Digital Height Correlation of surface topographies is here exploited to measure the full-field hygro-expansion of single fibers, i. e. a surface strain tensor map over the full field of view is obtained as function of time. From the strain field, the longitudinal and transverse hygro-expansion and principle strains can be calculated. Long- and intermediate-duration dynamic tests are conducted on softwood and hardwood fibers. A large spread in the softwood fiber's transverse and longitudinal hygro-expansion coefficient ratio was found, while hardwood fibers behave more consistently. Computing the principle strain ratios reduces this spread, as it takes into account the variations of the deformation direction, which is directly affected by the micro-fibril angle (MFA). Furthermore, long-duration tests allow identification of the half-times at which the fibers equilibrate. This research study proposes a classification system to identify and prevent occupational accidents in fiber storage warehouses at a pulp and paper facility. The present analysis is based on variables including pedestrian circulation, bobcat, trailer trucks, access, pedestrian circulation zones, and handrails. The proposed methodology defines and trains the system by using occupational accident event data collected at the facility. Three different predicting algorithms are used: J48 decision-making trees, Naive Bayes, and Bayesian nets. The results show that the J48 decision-making tree algorithm accurately identifies possible occupational accidents 90% of the time. It is concluded that identifying variables involved in occupational accidents allows generating a C4.5 (J48) decision-making tree that can be used as a support tool to prevent occupational accidents. Kraft method, the most widely used method in pulp production, causes to various environmental problems. Therefore, environmentally friendly pulp production methods have been investigated. In recent years, environmentally friendly deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as cooking liquor have been investigated. In this study, the possibilities of using a ternary DES (TDES) in pulp production from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) chips were investigated. TDES constituents were choline chloride (ChCl), lactic acid (LA), and glycerol (G). The effects of cooking temperature (145 °C and 155 °C) and cooking time (3 h, 3.5 h, and 4 h) on pulp and paper properties in TDES pulping were investigated. For comparison, kraft pulp from Scots pine was produced with conditions of 18% active alkali, 25% sulfidity, 155 °C cooking temperature, and 3.5 h cooking time. The highest lignin removal was obtained from TDES3 pulping conditions (155 °C and 4 h) with 76.0%. Lignin removal in the kraft pulp was 67.8%. TDES pulps were more quickly beaten to the target freeness level of 25°SR (the times for TDES3 and kraft pulps were 90 sec and 1350 sec, respectively.). Crystallinity index (CrI) values of kraft pulp and TDES3 pulp were 70.7% and 68.0%, respectively. TDES6 pulp had the highest pulp strength. But, the strength properties of all TDES pulps had lower than kraft pulp. Although they are pegged to receive, emergencies occur with some frequency and sometimes cannot be "predicted" or even when emergency situations occur they become crucial and can save an organization from a harmful disbursement. However, most urgent purchases are oriented toward the low or inexistent planning, which, in addition to the economic factor in increasing the value of the good or the service, affects the areas involved, and even the image of the organization, the environmental and safety factors. Thus, the cause of emergencies becomes an indication and the negotiations can mean reduction of millions in expenses of large industries. Thus, the study became systemic in the emergency purchases of a large Brazilian pulp and paper producer, in addition, a methodology that allowed the reduction of planting and application costs. This paper presents manufacture and testing of paper boards made from recycled paper pulp. The aim was to create material for creating paper boards which could be used in furniture design with various shapes. The used types of pulp were deinked pulp (DIP) and old corrugated cardboards (OCC). Several test pieces - paper boards were made with different combinations of materials and its mechanical and physical properties were tested. The used glue for each material was urea formaldehyde glue and starch in combination with glucose. The tests which were done were determination of density and density profile (EN 323:2005), moisture content (EN 322:2005), modulus of elasticity in bending and bending strength (EN 310:1993), thickness swelling and water absorption (EN317:2005), internal bond (EN 319:2005) and screw withdrawal resistance (EN 320:2011). The aim was to create material for creating boards which could be used in furniture design with various shapes. The result of this paper shows possible material combinations which could be used for furniture parts. Paper boards will be used for table top of side table in following steps. The Siamese people utilized the bark of the Coi tree (Streblus asper Lour.) to manufacture paper approximately 330 years ago. However, there are no studies yet related to the chemical properties of Coi bark as well as the morphological properties of Coi bark fiber and Coi pulp fiber. This research paper discussed such properties of Coi bark. The results indicated that Coi bark possessed a chemical composition that could potentially be used for pulp production, although it contained a high value of ash content, due to many calcium particles in the bark. Even though Coi pulp fibers were very long and stiff, with small lumens and thick cell walls, they could be felted naturally on a washing screen to make a strong wet sheet. This was due to a high felting power of fibers derived from a high value of fiber length and slenderness ratio. Therefore, the handsheets produced from Coi pulp fiber were obtained without chemical and beating treatments. These observations mean that both the archaeological and industrial applications of Coi bark, i.e., an ancient Samud Coi preservation and a new potential source of pulp fiber, are possible. A newly commissioned pulp moulding plant presents potential technical risks associated with the technology transfer process, which could limit the economic benefits and process efficiency indicators. The objective of the present work is to assess the production technology of moulded fibre by implementing a technology assessment model. The model includes the application of water and fiber, heat and mechanical energy balances; design and operation evaluation of equipment, such as oven, cooling tower, dissolved air flotation system and piping system, using DesDaf and dP software. The process is evaluated with TIBCO Business Studio simulator, which facilitates examination of technical and economic criteria that contribute to decision making. The implementation of the model made possible to verify the magnitude of the design and operating variables defined in plant documents, the identification of the potential deficiencies of the technology and the proposal of correction of a deficiency in the technology with the corresponding economic evaluation. This work assesses six different agricultural residues with the aim of finding alternative raw materials for a soda semichemical pulping process: stems of bell and chili pepper ( Capsicum annuum ), broad bean ( Vicia faba ), asparagus ( Asparagus officinalis ), pea ( Pisum sativum ), and okra ( Abelmoschus esculentus ). Pulping yields higher than 60% (m/m) were obtained, except for pea stems (43%). The drainability of all the pulps, expressed as the Schopper-Riegler index (ºSR), had values of over 70 ºSR. The Kajaani analyses of the fibers showed acceptable fiber lengths in all cases (0.64–0.92 mm), but on average shorter than the lengths of pulps from a commercial fluting paper (Old corrugated Container, OCC), that was found to be 1.27 mm. Handsheets of paper were produced both with the pulps under study and with mixtures of these pulps with OCC pulp. Several properties were measured to assess the use of the new fibers in a paper for cardboard production. The property showing the greatest differences was the Gurley porosity, ranging from 25 mL/min (asparagus) to 1300 mL/min (broad bean). Of the six residues tested, the okra residue fiber showed better properties than the commercial paper fiber (Concora Medium Test indexes: 1.5 N m 2 /g and 1.1 N m 2 /g respectively, Burst Indexes: 2.3 kPa m 2 /g and 1.7 kPa m 2 /g, respectively), yielding similar mechanical properties to those of high quality fibers obtained from miscanthus ( Miscanthus giganteus ). Dewatering of pulp and paper mill biosludge is challenging, and it can make up half of overall wastewater treatment costs. By harvesting energy provided by nature, freezing-thawing can notably alter the physical structure of sludge flocs, thereby influencing dewaterability and anaerobic digestibility. Samples of biosludge from three pulp and paper mills (sulfite, kraft, and semi-chemical pulping) as well as biosludge digestate (i.e., biosludge after anaerobic digestion) were subject to freeze-thaw treatment, and they were subsequently tested in terms of dewaterability by using a gravity filtration-crown press unit, and anaerobic digestibility by means of biochemical methane potential assays. Gravity filtrate from dewatering of freeze-thaw treated biosludge was also tested for anaerobic digestibility. Freeze-thaw treatment improved the dewaterability of biosludge mill samples to a larger extent than dewatering polymer. Treatment at −10°C before dewatering increased the dry solid content of the dewatering cake from 13% to 21% (sulfite mill), from 7% to 26% (kraft mill), from 10% to 20% (digestate after 35 days of digestion), and from 17% to 23% (digestate after 60 days of digestion). Biosludge from the semi-chemical pulping mill was only dewaterable after freeze-thaw treatment, which enabled a final cake solid content of 45%. In contrast, the anaerobic digestibility of biosludge and digestate improved, if at all, only to a relatively small extent. A strong improvement in digestibility was only observed in the case of gravity filtrate from dewatering of freeze-thaw treated biosludge (sulfite mill), where the specific biogas yield increased from 111 to 310 mL/g chemical oxygen demand added. Visual inspection on untreated and freeze-thaw treated biosludge confirmed the assumption that the strong effect on dewaterability was caused by irreversible compaction and dehydration of sludge particles. This study aimed to decelerate the weathering of paper from light by utilizing the antioxidant property of sodium ascorbate (SA), which is an ascorbic acid salt. Three different sessions of cooking were carried out by adding 2.5%, 5.0% and 7.5% of SA in proportion to the weight of a completely dried chip in addition to 24% NaOH in order to identify the influence of SA on cooking. It was observed that the pulp yield decreased when SA was added to the cooking. For that reason, it was decided to add SA into the control pulps instead of adding the digester. The same amount ofSA was added to the control. The SA-addedpulps were held in the agitator initially first for 2 hours and then 12 hours before making paper. So as to determine the influence of the treatment on the process. The paper was treated for 72, 144 and 256 hours and values of ΔL, Δa, Δb and ΔE were identified in order to determine the period of the SA's efficacy against weathering. The total discoloration in all the samples of paper, displayed an increase with an extension of the time period. The lowest discoloration after a 256-hour time period was seen in the sample group where 7.5% ofSA was added and soaked in the water. The final results indicated that the most appropriate concentration was 5% and that pulp suspension must be retained for 12 hours to improve mechanical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rice straw pulps produced under different conditions were subject to near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. At the same time, samples from those pulps were used to make handsheets, whose mechanical properties were measured. These values and those of brightness were successfully fitted to the pulping variables. Relating them to the NIR spectra, we found valid correlations for all parameters except the burst index, concluding that NIR spectroscopy could be used as an economical, timesaving and non-intrusive way to predict the mechanical strength of pulps before the paper sheet is made. Wastewater generated during pulp and paper production usually contains large amounts of organic matter that may be converted to biogas through anaerobic treatment. These effluents can also contain a variety of inhibitors such as resin acids and long-chain fatty acids (RFAs) among other compounds. A multivariate data analysis was conducted with performance and water quality data from an anaerobic reactor at a pulp and paper mill, which provides unprecedented evidence for the long-term inhibitory effects of RFAs during full-scale operation. Although RFAs in the reactor influent did not cause serious process disturbance, they significantly contributed to the variability in the percentage removal of soluble chemical oxygen demand (percent sCOD removal) (∼45% to ∼75%), as well as the variability in volatile fatty acid concentration in the effluent (2 to >20 meq/L). Furthermore, a linear correlation was found between RFA concentrations in the reactor sludge bed and the percent sCOD removal. An effective strategy to remove RFAs before anaerobic treatment is upfront removal of particles within the primary clarifier. Based on an exploratory model, a graphical method is introduced that allows for quick assessment of the extent to which resin acids are sorbed to particles, and associated potential for upfront settling. When the pH of high-solids wastewater is below 7, the majority of resin acids will be associated with particles and a considerable fraction of these can therefore be removed by means of settling or floatation. Finally, a novel liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method that rapidly quantifies major RFA constituents was developed. In the full-scale reactor, dehydroabietic acid (DHA) represented the bulk (∼92%) of the resin acids within the granular sludge. This article introduces a method to validate heat of sorption measurements from isotherms by comparing them to direct measurements using reaction calorimetry. We have evaluated some frequently used single-temperature isotherm models (BET, GAB) as well as two multi-temperature isotherm equations (Anderson, Heikkilä). It turned out that the isotherm models with better isotherm curve fitting characteristics did not deliver the best results for the heat of sorption. Multi-temperature isotherm models such as the Heikkilä equation are able to deliver good results in terms of modelling the isotherm data and determining the heat of sorption. Single-temperature models fit the isotherm data better than multi-temperature models, but failed to deliver correct values for the heat of sorption. We specifically investigated the heat of sorption at very low moisture content, which is most relevant for paper drying. The resulting heat of sorption curves were analyzed with respect to their saturation behavior, which is expected to occur below BET monolayer moisture. The objective of this study was to characterize the properties of pulp and paper produced from tea (Camellia sinensis) wastes, an agricultural residue widely available in Turkey, using the kraft-anthraquinone (AQ) cooking method. The chemical components and fiber morphology of tea wastes were investigated. The results indicated that tea wastes had low holocellulose, cellulose, and a-cellulose contents and high lignin content. Also, the suitability of the fiber for pulp and paper production was examined, and the fiber length, fiber width, lumen diameter, and cell wall thickness were measured. According to these values, it was found that the strength properties of papers obtained from tea wastes were insufficient. Therefore, tea waste pulps were mixed with Turkish pine pulps at various ratios. Twelve different cooking experiments were performed on the tea wastes, and the cooking with the best pulp yield was used for mixing. The second cooking, with 0.1% AQ, gave the best yield (33.26%), an increase of about 3.51% compared to the first cooking with no AQ. The physical and optical properties of the papers were also examined. Results showed that paper properties were improved by increasing the Turkish pine pulp rate. This study investigates the operating conditions used in the sodaanthraquinone pulping of Eucalyptus globulus wood after autohydrolysis pretreatment on the yield, kappa number, and brightness of the resulting unbleached pulp. Moreover, strength-related properties of the resulting handsheets was examined to identify the best pulping conditions and compare the outcome with that of a conventional soda-anthraquinone pulping process. The paper strength properties of the pulp were similar to or better than papers made from soda-AQ delignified pulps conducted in a single step. Also, a liquid fraction with a substantial content in hemicellulosic extracts was recovered in the simplified process. Autohydrolysis of the raw material facilitates carrying out soda-AQ pulping under milder conditions. In addition, autohydrolysis improves other properties relative to paper from raw cellulose pulp. Yield, kappa number, and brightness for pulp from solid residues of autohydrolysed eucalyptus wood were similar to those for pulp from untreated eucalyptus wood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pulp and paper mills generate large amounts of waste organic matter that may be converted to renewable energy in form of methane. The anaerobic treatment of mill wastewater is widely accepted however, usually only applied to few selected streams. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rates in full-scale reactors range between 30 and 90%, and methane yields are 0.30–0.40 m 3 kg −1 COD removed. Highest COD removal rates are achieved with condensate streams from chemical pulping (75–90%) and paper mill effluents (60–80%). Numerous laboratory and pilot-scale studies have shown that, contrary to common perception, most other mill effluents are also to some extent anaerobically treatable. Even for difficult-to-digest streams such as bleaching effluents COD removal rates range between 15 and 90%, depending on the extent of dilution prior to anaerobic treatment, and the applied experimental setting. Co-digestion of different streams containing diverse substrate can level out and diminish toxicity, and may lead to a more robust microbial community. Furthermore, the microbial population has the ability to become acclimated and adapted to adverse conditions. Stress situations such as toxic shock loads or temporary organic overloading may be tolerated by an adapted community, whereas they could lead to process disturbance with an un-adapted community. Therefore, anaerobic treatment of wastewater containing elevated levels of inhibitors or toxicants should be initiated by an acclimation/adaptation period that can last between a few weeks and several months. In order to gain more insight into the underlying processes of microbial acclimation/adaptation and co-digestion, future research should focus on the relationship between wastewater composition, reactor operation and microbial community dynamics. The potential for engineering and managing the microbial resource is still largely untapped. Unlike in wastewater treatment, anaerobic digestion of mill biosludge (waste activated sludge) and primary sludge is still in its infancy. Current research is mainly focused on developing efficient pretreatment methods that enable fast hydrolysis of complex organic matter, shorter sludge residence times and as a consequence, smaller sludge digesters. Previous experimental studies indicate that the anaerobic digestibility of non-pretreated biosludge from pulp and paper mills varies widely, with volatile solids (VS) removal rates of 21–55% and specific methane yields ranging between 40 and 200 mL g −1 VS fed. Pretreatment can increase the digestibility to some extent, however in almost all reported cases, the specific methane yield of pretreated biosludge did not exceed 200 mL g −1 VS fed. Increases in specific methane yield mostly range between 0 and 90% compared to non-pretreated biosludge, whereas larger improvements were usually achieved with more difficult-to-digest biosludge. Thermal treatment and microwave treatment are two of the more effective methods. The heat required for the elevated temperatures applied in both methods may be provided from surplus heat that is often available at pulp and paper mills. Given the large variability in specific methane yield of non-pretreated biosludge, future research should focus on the links between anaerobic digestibility and sludge properties. Research should also involve mill-derived primary sludge. Although biosludge has been the main target in previous studies, primary sludge often constitutes the bulk of mill-generated sludge, and co-digestion of a mixture between both types of sludge may become practical. The few laboratory studies that have included mill primary sludge indicate that, similar to biosludge, the digestibility can range widely. Long-term studies should be conducted to explore the potential of microbial adaptation to lignocellulosic material which can constitute more than half of the organic matter in pulp and paper mill sludge. In this study, perennial fast growth Napier grass fibers were used for pulp and papermaking. Chlorination and alkaline processes were carried out using sodium chlorite and sodium hydroxide respectively, for pulp extraction from Napier grass. Detailed chemical composition analysis of the Napier grass fibers and the extracted pulp was carried out and a comparison with other perennial grasses was made. The extracted fibers and pulp obtained from Napier grass were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The physical, optical, and mechanical properties of Napier grass pulp handmade paper sheets produced in the laboratory were investigated by finding the opacity, brightness, tensile index, breaking length, and burst index. Handmade paper sheets made from Napier grass pulp were compared to paper made from other perennial grasses. The superior properties of paper produced from Napier grass pulp indicate the suitability of Napier grass as an alternative non-wood source for papermaking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract:This review article introduces recent technical and scientific reports on near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy in the wood and paper industry, which have increased during the last decade. Many researchers have reported that the NIR technique is useful for detection of both chemical and physical properties of wood materials and has been widely used in cases where the characteristic cellular structure of the material is retained. With regard to application of NIR spectroscopy to pulp and paper, many publications have reported its potential as an on-line measurement technique during paper-making process control. NIR spectroscopy is considered fundamental in applied research on wood and paper. Biomaterials from olive tree pruning are an abundant agricultural residue in various Mediterranean regions. A suggested use of this residue is its separation in a main fraction (trunks and stems with diameter > 1 cm) and a residual fraction (leaves and stems with diameter 1 < cm), using biorefinery procedures. The main fraction is cooked with ethanol, giving rise to a pulp, which can be used either in paper or in bioethanol production if before pulping the main fraction is subjected to a hydrothermal treatment. Pulping with 70% ethanol concentration, 185 °C for 80 min resulted in a pulp with a yield of 46.30% and a content of holocellulose, α-cellulose, and lignin of 77.17%, 62.49%, and 21.73%, respectively. The paper sheets obtained had a breaking length of 1168 m, a burst index of 0.44 kN /g, a tear index of 2.25 mN.m²/g, and a brightness of 43.66%. The pulp converted into bioethanol (by simultaneous hydrolysis and fermentation) achieved a conversion of 70 g bioethanol/100 g potential bioethanol. The residual fraction of olive tree prunings was subjected to combustion to produce thermal energy. The heating value was 18700 kJ/kg, the flame temperature range was 1094 to 2013 ºC, and the dew point temperature range of the flue gases was 47 to 53 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In this paper, the prospect of integrating a combined paper&pulp mill with fuel production via biomass gasification was investigated. In the study, three different types of gasifiers (circulating fluidised bed, entrained flow and indirect gasification) and three fuel processes (dimethyl ether, methanol and Fischer-Tropsch wax synthesis) were investigated using computer simulations. The paper reports differences from the stand-alone cases and the integrated cases, using the electricity equivalence efficiency as a measure. Only 6 out of the 18 integrated cases studied displayed a positive result from integration and no obvious fuel selection that stand out as the most beneficial one, however the synthesis of dimethyl ether is, in combination with all gasifiers assessed a rather good choice, with an change in efficiency from integration ranging from −1% to 4%. Dimethyl ether is not the best choice if the electrical equivalence is to be maximised however. In this case the combination of circulating fluidised bed gasification and methanol synthesis should be pursued. The production of Fischer-Tropsch wax should according to the chosen measure not be produced; however there is an added value in the production of a non-oxygenated fuel which has not been taken into account in this particular study. All cases leads to a reduction of 0.4–0.9 kg CO2 per kg of dry biomass used in the process for fuel synthesis and the possibility to export bark is a more significant factor in this respect than which type of fuel is synthesised. A variety of the Leucaena genus, Leucaena diversifolia, was used for pulp and paper making by kraft and refining processes and a OD(EP)DP bleaching sequence. The same species has been suggested as an energy crop and, in fact, this species used shows a high gross heating value; besides, this variety of Leucaena has appropriate characteristics for pulp and paper making. The holocellulose content was higher than Eucalyptus globulus, and ash and lignin contents were comparable to other varieties of Leucaena. Pulps with a kappa number between 17 and 18, and 21.4 cP viscosity were obtained using an active alkali concentration of 31%. Also, paper sheets showed good strength properties, comparable or even greater than those obtained with Eucalyptus or others varieties of Leucaena at comparable refining degrees, between 30 and 40 °SR. Abstract: This work aims at the characterization and the biorefinery of Hesperaloe funifera by means of the use of its three main components: separating hemicellulose by hydrothermal treatments; cellulose pulp by various pulping processes (soda, soda–anthraquinone, ethanolamine, ethyleneglycol, diethanolamine and diethyleneglycol); and exploitation of pulping liquor, rich in lignin, by pyrolysis and gasification processes. The contents in lignin, α-cellulose, holocellulose, hemicellulose, ethanol–benzene extractives, hot water solubles, 1% NaOH solubles and ash of H. funifera were found to be 7.3%, 40.9%, 76.5%, 35.6%, 4.0%, 13.5%, 29.5% and 5.9%, respectively. The mean fibre length, 4.19mm, exceeds those for some non-wood materials. By using sulfuric acid in the hydrothermal treatment (170°C, 0, 20min after reaching operating temperature, 8 liquid/solid ratio, and 0.3% sulfuric acid), gives a liquid fraction containing 4.62% of glucose, 10.56% of xylose, 1.28% of arabinose, and a solid fraction with a solid yield of 57.0%. The best pulp of Hesperaloe pulp was obtained by cooking with 10% NaOH and 1% anthraquinone at 155°C for 30min, exhibited good values of yield (48.3%), viscosity (737mL/g), Kappa number (15.2), tensile index (83.6Nm/g), stretch (3.8%), burst index (7.34kN/g) and tear index (3.20mNm2/g). Moreover, the soda–anthraquinone pulps of raw material are better than the pulps from solid fraction of hydrothermal treatments. Finally, acidification (pH 6) of soda–anthraquinone pulping liquor was carried out to separate lignin-rich solids, by which pyrolysis gave a gas containing 1.13% H2, 31.79% CO and 1.86% CH4 by weight. Abstract: The aim of this work was to chemically characterize orange tree prunings and use it in pulping and combustion processes. Soda-anthraquinone pulping of the main fraction of orange pruning (stems with a diameter >0.5cm) was simulated with polynomial and neurofuzzy models, that predicted pulp properties as a function of operating variables (155–185°C, 40–90min, soda concentration, 10–16%) with errors less than 20%. The heating values (16,870kJ/kg), the flame temperature (1150–2150°C) and dew point temperature of fuel gas (47–53°C) for the residual fraction from orange pruning (stems diameter <0.5cm and leaves) was determined and compared with other non-wood lignocellulosic materials. As a consequence the price of kJ obtained by combustion of this residual fraction is less than other lignocellulosic materials, much lower than those of fossil fuels. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A quick and direct method for identifying organic components of papers in library and archival collections with minimal destructive sampling is needed for preservation, forensic, and general purposes. Direct analysis in real time mass spectrometry (DART-MS) is used for characterizing 16 reference papers of known manufacture in terms of their pulp composition and pitch contaminants. Unique mass spectra are obtained from bleached kraft, chemithermomechanical, and stone groundwood pulp papers in real time without extractions, derivatizations, chromatographic separations, and other time- and chemical-consuming sample preparations. Phytosteroids are volatilized from bleached hardwood kraft but not from bleached softwood kraft papers, which differentiates the two of them. The kraft papers are in turn differentiated from chemithermomechanical pulp papers by lignin-derived thermolyis products: syringyl products arise from hardwood, but guaiacyl and coumaryl products arise from softwood, chemithermomechanical pulp papers. Stone groundwood papers contain a number of extractives that are volatilized, which serve to differentiate them from all the other papers. Papers that contain rosin vs. alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) sizings are immediately differentiated. The DART-MS methodology is fast and simple, and the spectra are repeatable. Microsamples as small as ∼10μg tweezed from the paper surface may be analyzed. These benchmark spectra are the prelude to further applications of DART-MS in paper research and the beginning of the development of a searchable library of DART-MS spectra of printing and writing papers by the Library of Congress. Ozone bleaching is a common practice in pulping, and also of eucalyptus, where it is usually applied in combination with bleaching sequences based on oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, or chlorine dioxide. Ozone has been proven to be a highly efficient and competitive bleaching chemical in terms of delignification efficiency, low costs, and reducing ecological impact. The objective of the present work was to evaluate technology with ozone/alkaline extraction (Z/E) and ozone/chlorine dioxide (Z/D) for bleaching of eucalyptus kraft pulp. Primarily, the impact of these bleaching steps on refinability and quality of pulp should be investigated. As reference, the sequence D*(EP)D (hot chlorine dioxide, extraction in presence of hydrogen peroxide, chlorine dioxide) was selected, which is considered as the state-of-the-art bleaching in elemental chlorine free (ECF) bleaching technology. Various bleaching sequences with ozone in their first step (Z/D(EP)DP, Z/D(EP)DD, Z/EDP, Z/EDD and A*Z/EDP) were found to provide kraft pulps of similar brightness and in similar yield as the reference sequence D*(EP)D. The kappa number, viscosity, and the contents of glucose and xylose, and hexenuronic acid of the pulps were also similar. In addition, the Z sequences resulted in a substantial reduction of the total chlorine dioxide consumption (more than 30.3% in all cases). The A*Z/EDP sequence, which proved to be the most efficient, yielded 87.5% ClO2 reduction. The studied bleaching sequences also resulted in substantially improved brightness reversal with regard to the reference sequence. The sequence A*Z/EDP was also the most efficient as regards the removal or organochlorines (OX) from the pulp and their reduction in the effluents (AOX). Abstract: The influence of the hydrothermal treatment conditions of rice straw (temperature – 150–190°C , time – 0–20min after reaching the operation temperature – and liquid/solid ratio – 6–8), on the composition of liquid and solid fractions was studied. Polynomial models were found for to reproduce the experimental results with errors less than 6%. Operating to 190°C, 15min and 9 liquid/solid ratio was obtained high values of glucose (1.92g/L), xylose (3.97g/L), arabinose (0.99g/L) and acetic acid (1.96g/L), what allows to save capital when not operating with the maximum time and/or liquid/solid ratio; yield in the solid fraction is 88.1% and lignin content 24.43%. If what it is required to obtain good values of yield (96.46%) and lignin content, is necessary to operate to 150°C, obtaining lower concentrations glucose (1.11%), xylose (2.78%), arabinose (0.56%) and acetic acid (0.39%). Ethanolamine pulping of solid fraction of hydrothermal treatment provides pulp with higher or similar properties to those obtained of pulping rice straw with ethanolamine or soda. The connections between forest products operations and water resources in the United States is considered and, where possible, quantified. Manufacture of wood, pulp, and paper products and the influences of forest management and forest products manufacture on water quality are discussed. Most fresh water in the US originates in forested areas. Responsible harvesting strategies, best management practices, and forest re-growth combine to minimize or eliminate changes in water availability and degradation of water quality due to harvesting. Relative to alternative land uses and large-scale disturbance events, forested areas produce the highest quality of fresh water. Water inputs for the manufacture of forest products total about 5.8 billion m3 per year, an amount equal about 0.4% of the surface and groundwater yield from timberland. Approximately 88% of water used in manufacturing is treated and returned directly to surface waters, about 11% is converted to water vapor and released during the manufacturing process, and 1% is imparted to products or solid residuals. Abstract: The influence of operational variables in the pulping of vine shoots by use of ethylene glycol [viz. temperature (155–185°C), cooking time (30–90min) and ethylene glycol concentration (50–70% v/v)] on the properties of the resulting pulp (viz. yield, kappa number and viscosity) and paper sheets (breaking length, stretch, burst index, tear index and brightness) was studied. A central composite factorial design was used in conjunction with the software ANFIS Edit Matlab 6.5 to develop fuzzy neural model that reproduced the experimental results of the dependent variables with errors less than 5%. Abstract: Rice straw was used as an alternative raw material to obtain paper pulp. Pulping was done by using high-boiling point organic solvents of decreased polluting power relative to classical (Kraft, sulphite) solvents but affording operation at similar pressure levels. The holocellulose, α-cellulose and lignin contents of rice straw (viz. 60.7, 41.2 and 21.9%, respectively) are similar to those of some woody raw materials such as pine and eucalyptus, and various non-wood materials including olive tree prunings, wheat straw and sunflower stalks. Pulping tests were conducted by using ethyleneglycol, diethyleneglycol, ethanolamine and diethanolamine under next operating conditions: 80% solvent, 180°C and 150min. The solid/liquid ratio was 6. The amine solvents were found to provide pulp with better properties than did the glycol solvents. Diethanolamine pulp exhibited the best viscosity, Kappa index, drainage index and burst index (viz. 956mL/g, 17.0, 21°SR and 1.23kN/g, respectively). This study evaluates three non-wood perennials to find alternative raw materials for the paper and pulp industry. Meadow hay, cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum L.) and Virginia mallow (Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby) are attracting attention as potential raw materials for the bioeconomy due to biodiversity benefits, low fertilizer requirements as well as high yields. For the first time a detailed view on their fibre morphology and use as paper feedstock is given. After three different mechanical grinding methods, the plant material was screened, pulped in NaOH and beaten in a PFI mill. Birch fibre has been chosen as short-fibre control and blend base. Hand-sheets with different pulp blends of birch and one of the three raw materials were made, and paper properties were measured. For meadow hay, Virginia mallow and cup plant fibre lengths of 0.5, 1.3, and 0.9 mm were measured. Therefore, all perennial plant materials have comparable fibre lengths to hardwoods. Meadow hay blends with birch pulp percentages of 50 % and 75 % generated higher paper strength compared to the pure birch paper at a beating intensity of 5000 revolutions (PFI). The paper strength of cup plant and Virginia mallow blends is comparable to the strength of the birch control. In order to identify faster-growing non-woody species usable for biomass and paper production, four Leucaena species (L. diversifolia, L. colinsii, L. salvadorensis and three varieties of L. leucocephala) were tested. All the Leucaena species showed a good soil and climatic adaptation to Spain Southwest except for L. salvadorensis. Studied Leucaena species showed biomass productivity ranges from 67.14 to 9.44tha−1 (o.d.b.) and 43.6 to 11.4tha−1 under Mediterranean conditions for the first and second year sprouts, respectively. The quantity of solubles and extractives shows similar values when compared with wood materials. Relatively lower lignin content in Leucaena (from 15.7% to 21.4%) species has been found with respect to other vegetal species. The α-cellulose contents (39.4–45.3%) are in the range of the normal values expected for the other non-wood raw materials. The study confirms the feasibility of organocell yield pulping process to Leucaena species. Organocell process provides an efficient delignification (kappa number 12.4 and pulp yield 42.2%) for L. leucocephala and suitably physical characteristics of paper sheet (tensile index 20.3kNm/kg for L. diversifolia). Abstract: In this work, we characterized various unconventional pulping raw materials in terms of their contents in hollocelulose, α-cellulose, lignin, ethanol–benzene extractables, ash, and hot water and 1% soda solubles. Also, we characterized pulp obtained from each material by using an ethyleneglycol concentration of 65% at 180°C for 75min, followed by beating at 1500 revolutions in a PFI refiner—all of which are compatible with existing facilities for Kraft and soda pulping processes. We characterized vine shoots, cotton stalks, Leucaena leucocephala and Chamaecytisus proliferus as pulping raw materials and found Ch. proliferus and cotton stalks to be the best for the intended purpose on the grounds of their increased contents in holocellulose (79.73 and 72.86%) and α-cellulose (45.37 and 58.48%), and their decreased contents in ethanol–benzene extractables (2.64 and 1.42%), hot water solubles (2.79 and 3.33%) and 1% soda solubles (16.67 and 20.34%). These properties resulted in increased pulp yields and hence in efficient use of these two types of raw material. The paper sheets obtained of different pulps were characterized and those from Ch. proliferus found to be the best overall as they exhibited an increased breaking length (4644m), stretch (2.87%), burst index (2.46kN/g) tear index (0.33mNm2/g) and brightness (49.92% ISO); in addition Ch. proliferus pulp was obtained with a high yield (62.88%). The studied Tagasaste provenances shows biomass productivity ranges from 1.0tha−1 yr−1 to 3.4tha−1 yr−1 (o.d.b.) and 25.3tha−1 yr−1 to 49.4tha−1 yr−1 under Mediterranean conditions for first and second year sprouts, respectively. The quantity of solubles and extractives shows similar values when compared with wood materials. A relatively lower lignin content in Tagasaste (from 13.7% to 17.1%) species has been found with respect to other vegetal species. The α-celullose contents (43.6–45.3%) were in the range of the normal values expected for the other non-wood raw materials. The study confirms the feasibility of the organocell yield pulping process to Tagasaste provenances. Organocell processes provide an efficient delignification (kappa index from 7.2 to 10.9 and pulp yield from 43.6% to 54.1%). The best results are obtained for the physical properties of paper sheets for Tagasaste from Australia in the second year, with values of tensile index of 16.0kNm/kg, burst index of 1.12MPam2/kg and tear index of 0.55Nm2/kg. Abstract: The influence of temperature in the hydrothermal treatment of sunflower stalks on the composition of the liquid fraction obtained was examined. The remaining solid fraction was subjected to ethanol pulping in order to obtain pulp that was used to produce paper sheets. The pulp was characterized in terms of yield, kappa index, viscosity, and cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin contents; and the paper sheets in terms of breaking length, stretch, burst index and tear index. Hydrothermal treatment of the raw material at 190°C provided a liquid phase with maximal hemicellulose-derived oligomers and monosaccharide (glucose, xylose and arabinose) contents (26.9 and 4.2g/L, respectively). Pulping the solid fraction obtained by hydrothermal treatment at 180°C, with 70% ethanol at a liquid/solid ratio of 8:1 at 170°C for 120min provided pulp with properties on a par with those of soda pulp from the sunflower stalks, namely: 36.3% yield, 69.1% cellulose, 12.6% hemicellulose, 18.2% lignin and 551ml/g viscosity. Also, paper sheets obtained from the ethanol pulp were similar in breaking length (3.8km), stretch (1.23%), burst index (1.15kN/g) and tear index (2.04mNm2/g) to those provided by soda pulp. Hemp is a primary substance for papermaking, having been used for 2,000 years in this capacity. In the 20th century wood pulp came to replace hemp and other long fibres, and this has been an environmental disaster. Recent efforts to re-introduce hemp fibres into paper pulp are under way, with a number of writing papers having been manufactured in Europe and North America. However, most of these were done in small batches. Most papermills in southeast Asia produce 500,000 tons or more annually, whilst mills in the West tend to be small, specialty paper mills. Hemp is used rather consistently for fine papers, including cigarette paper and cosmetic tissue paper, but writing paper may continue to be made from trees until we run out and are forced to use other material. One large papermill in Germany, Gmund (which is distributed in the UK by The Hemp Shop) is starting to catch up, with a number of different papers including writing paper now being made in increasingly larger batches. A number of other companies are also offering hemp papers, ranging from writing paper to wallpaper. Since the early 1980s, anaerobic treatment of industrial effluents has found widespread application in the pulp and paper industry. Over 200 installations are treating a large variety of different pulp and paper mill effluents. Amongst various anaerobic systems the UASB and IC are the most applied anaerobic reactor systems. Anaerobic treatment is well feasible for effluents originated from recycle paper mills, mechanical pulping (peroxide bleached), semi-chemical pulping and sulphite and kraft evaporator condensates. The advantages of anaerobic pre-treatment are (1) net production of renewable energy (biogas), (2) minimized bio-solids production, (3) minimal footprint and (4) reduced emission of greenhouse gases. Via in-line application of anaerobic treatment in closed circuits (paper kidney technology) further savings on cost of fresh water intake and effluent discharge levies are generated. This review article introduces recent technical and scientific reports in terms of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy in the wood and paper science and industry, where interest has increased during the last couple decades. Many researchers reported the NIR technique was useful to detect multi information in both chemical and physical properties of wood materials, although it was widely used in a state where characteristic cellular structure was retained. In the case of application of NIR spectroscopy to pulp and paper, many publications have pointed out its high probability as online measurement techniques during paper‐making process control. World demand for paper has increased at an average annual rate of 4.7% over the past 40 years. Although future growth will reduce to 2–3% the existing wood resources may be inadequate to meet this growing demand for paper especially in the Asia-Pacific region and Eastern Europe. In addition, logging is coming under increasing pressure from environmentalists concerned about habitat destruction and other longer-term impacts of forest harvesting. It is, therefore, necessary to consider alternative fiber sources to meet the possible shortfall of wood fiber for papermaking. Abstract: The broader application of the activated sludge process in pulp and paper mills, together with increased production, have amplified sludge management problems. With sludge management costs as high as 60% of the total wastewater treatment plant operating costs, and increasingly stringent environmental regulations, it is economically advantageous for pulp and paper mills to reduce their biosolids production. In order to provide a state-of-the-art review of secondary sludge reduction technologies, we have considered the scenarios of lower sludge production through process modifications, and waste-activated sludge reduction through post-treatment. A critical evaluation of all candidate reduction technologies indicates that sludge reduction through treatment process changes appears more appealing than post-treatment alternatives. The former approach offers a clear advantage over the latter in that the treatment process changes reduce sludge production in the first place, thus decreasing sludge management cost. Although it is technically feasible to eliminate the need for sludge disposal, it is unlikely to be economically feasible at this time. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The results of characterization for four different vine shoot varieties, grown using two different methods, revealed no significant differences in composition among vine varieties or between growing methods. The holocellulose content of vine shoots (67.14%) is lower than those of other non-wood raw materials (e.g. wheat straw, sunflower stalks, cotton stalks, etc.), but similar to those of pine and higher to those of olive trimmings. On the other hand, their lignin content (20.27%) is similar to those of eucalyptus and the non-wood raw materials. Also, their contents in cold-water, hot-water and 1% soda solubles, and ethanol–benzene extractables, are higher than for pine and eucalyptus. Soda, kraft, ethanol and ethylene–glycol pulping processes have low yields (29–47%) relative to the pulping processes applied to olive trimmings and wheat straw. Kraft pulp is that exhibiting the best properties, including a higher α-cellulose content (73.74%) than pulp from wheat straw or olive trimmings, but a higher lignin content (17.18%). Also, kraft pulp provides paper with the highest breaking length, burst index and tear index (viz. 1316m, 1.63kN/g and 1.59mNm2/g, respectively); these values, which are intermediate among those for olive trimmings, wheat straw and sunflower seeds, are low and can be substantially improved by appropriate refining of the pulp. Abstract: Mercury intrusion is frequently used for the characterization of porous materials, giving access to parameters such as porosity and pore size distribution as well as density (skeletal and bulk).The present work aims at studying the suitability of the mercury intrusion technique to evaluate the pore structure and related information of different kinds of woods used for pulp production, pulp handsheets and commercial paper sheets. Differences in wood structure, pulp composition and paper composition and structure could be easily detected by changes in the measured parameters, thus enabling a better understanding and/or prediction of the behaviour of these materials. Abstract: This paper examines the influence of the degree of refining of different pulps, produced from olive trimmings and eucalyptus wood, on various physical properties. Corresponding pulps were obtained by means of different cooking processes. Pulp from olive trimmings was obtained by means of an organosolv process and pulp from eucalyptus was obtained by means of a kraft process. Pulp from olive trimmings exhibited a lower specific surface area, water retention volume, breaking length, stretch and burst index, but a higher porosity, than eucalyptus pulp. On the other hand, the same degree of refining was achieved with less energy for olive pulp than for eucalyptus pulp. Mixed pulp from olive trimmings and eucalyptus provided paper sheets with acceptable physical properties but with reduced refining energy costs relative to eucalyptus pulp alone. Abstract: The influence of temperature (150–170°C), pulping time (15–45min) and soda concentration (5–10%) in the pulping of abaca on the yield, kappa, viscosity, breaking length, stretch and tear index of pulp and paper sheets, was studied. Using a factorial design to identify the optimum operating conditions, equations relating the dependent variables to the operational variables of the pulping process were derived that reproduced the former with errors lower than 25%. Using a high temperature, and a medium time and soda concentration, led to pulp that was difficult to bleach (kappa 28.34) but provided acceptable strength-related properties (breaking length 4728m; stretch 4.76%; tear index 18.25mNm2/g), with good yield (77.33%) and potential savings on capital equipment costs. Obtaining pulp amenable to bleaching would entail using more drastic conditions than those employed in this work. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
