The millimetre wave radar signatures of sea lions collected from three animals in the outdoor seal pool available at the Sea Mammal Research Unit in St Andrews in the Autumn of 2021 is reported. The objective is to study the radar amplitude and Doppler signatures of the animals when their full body or part thereof is above water, which is important for the application of autonomous marine navigation. The data was collected using 24 GHz (K‐band) and 77 GHz (W‐band) Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave radars with linear polarisation. It has been demonstrated that the sea lions were very clearly detected by the radars with Signal to Noise Ratio greater than 30 dB at a range of 40 m. The calculated modal radar cross section (RCS) of the sea lions in HH polarisation at 24 and 77 GHz vary from −48 to −26 dBsm and −48 to −28 dBsm respectively, corresponding to the different body parts and the amount of exposure to the radar beam. In VV polarisation, the modal RCS value range is from −49 to −26 dBsm and −49 to −22 dBsm respectively. Lice from family Echinophthiriidae are of the few insects that have successfully colonized marine environment living as ectoparasites of pinnipeds, i.e., sea lions, seals, and the walrus. They have developed unique adaptations to cope with the amphibious lifestyle of their hosts. Because eggs do not survive underwater, lice could only reproduce when their host remains on pack ice enough time. Consequently, lice generations per year are limited by host haul-out behavior. The objective of this work is to study the effect of host sex and age class, and the annual variation on the prevalence and mean abundance of Antarctophthirus lobodontis in crabeater seals from the Antarctic Peninsula. During three consecutive field-seasons, we collected lice from 41 crabeater seals (23 females, 16 males, 2 indeterminate, being 24 adults, and 17 juveniles). We investigated this effect on the prevalence and mean abundance by a generalized linear model formulation in a Bayesian framework. According to the lowest Deviance Index Criterion model, sex host does not affect prevalence nor mean abundance. We found that juveniles present greater abundance and prevalence than adults, possibly due to foraging habits. They spent more time on the ice than adults in groups of dozens of animals. This behavior would favor both egg development and lice transmission. We do not find adult females with lice, which suggests that transmission of A. lobodontis should be horizontal. The high mean abundance of lice in 2014 could be associated with an unusual increase in Lobodon carcinophaga population, probably related to the pack-ice availability and zooplankton abundance. Background. Accurate time-energy budgets summarise an animal's energy expenditure in a given environment, and are potentially a sensitive indicator of how an animal responds to changing resources. Deriving accurate time-energy budgets requires an estimate of time spent in different activities and of the energetic cost of that activity. Bio-loggers (e.g., accelerometers) may provide a solution for monitoring animals such as fur seals that make long-duration foraging trips. Using low resolution to record behaviour may aid in the transmission of data, negating the need to recover the device. Methods. This study used controlled captive experiments and previous energetic research to derive time-energy budgets of juvenile Australian fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) equipped with tri-axial accelerometers. First, captive fur seals and sea lions were equipped with accelerometers recording at high (20 Hz) and low (1 Hz) resolutions, and their behaviour recorded. Using this data, machine learning models were trained to recognise four states--foraging, grooming, travelling and resting. Next, the energetic cost of each behaviour, as a function of location (land or water), season and digestive state (pre- or post-prandial) was estimated. Then, diving and movement data were collected from nine wild juvenile fur seals wearing accelerometers recording at high- and low- resolutions. Models developed from captive seals were applied to accelerometry data from wild juvenile Australian fur seals and, finally, their time-energy budgets were reconstructed. Results. Behaviour classification models built with low resolution (1 Hz) data correctly classified captive seal behaviours with very high accuracy (up to 90%) and recorded without interruption. Therefore, time-energy budgets of wild fur seals were constructed with these data. The reconstructed time-energy budgets revealed that juvenile fur seals expended the same amount of energy as adults of similar species. No significant differences in daily energy expenditure (DEE) were found across sex or season (winter or summer), but fur seals rested more when their energy expenditure was expected to be higher. Juvenile fur seals used behavioural compensatory techniques to conserve energy during activities that were expected to have high energetic outputs (such as diving). Discussion. As low resolution accelerometry (1 Hz) was able to classify behaviour with very high accuracy, future studies may be able to transmit more data at a lower rate, reducing the need for tag recovery. Reconstructed time-energy budgets demonstrated that juvenile fur seals appear to expend the same amount of energy as their adult counterparts. Through pairing estimates of energy expenditure with behaviour this study demonstrates the potential to understand how fur seals expend energy, and where and how behavioural compensations are made to retain constant energy expenditure over a short (dive) and long (season) period. The oldest definitive pinniped fossils date from approximately 30.6-23 million years ago (Ma) in the North Pacific. Pinniped monophyly is consistently supported; the group shares a common ancestry with arctoid carnivorans, either ursids or musteloids. Crown pinnipeds comprise the Otariidae (fur seals and sea lions), Odobenidae (walruses), and Phocidae (seals), with paraphyletic 'enaliarctines' falling outside the crown group. The position of extinct Desmatophocidae is debated; they are considered to be closely related to both otariids and odobenids or, alternatively, to phocids. Both otariids and odobenids are known from the North Pacific, diverging approximately 19 Ma, with phocids originating in the North Atlantic or Paratethys region 19-14 Ma. Our understanding of pinniped paleobiology has been enriched by studies that incorporate anatomical and behavioral data into a phylogenetic framework. There is now evidence for sexual dimorphism in the earliest pinnipeds, heralding polygynous breeding systems, followed by increased body sizes, diving capabilities, and diverse feeding strategies in later-diverging phocid and otarioid lineages. RATIONALE: Mixing models are a common method for quantifying the contribution of prey sources to the diet of an individual using stable isotope analysis; however, these models rely upon a known trophic discrimination factor (hereafter, TDF) that results from fractionation between prey and animal tissues. Quantifying TDFs in captive animals is ideal, because diet is controlled and the proportional contributions and isotopic values of all prey items are known. METHODS: To calculate TDFs for the Hawaiian monk seal, northern elephant seal, bearded seal, ringed seal, spotted seal, harbor seal, and California sea lion, we obtained whiskers, serum, plasma, red blood cells, and prey items from nine captive individuals. We obtained δ13C and δ15N values using continuous-flow isotope-ratio mass spectrometry. The average δ13C and δ15N values from bulk and lipid-corrected prey from the diet were subtracted from the δ13C and δ15N values of each blood and whisker sample to calculate tissue-specific TDFs for each individual (Δ13C or Δ15N). RESULTS: The Δ13C values ranged from +1.7 to +3.2‰(bulk prey) and from +0.8 to +1.9‰(lipid-corrected prey) for the various blood components, and from +3.9 to +4.6‰(bulk prey) or +2.6 to +3.9‰(lipid-corrected prey) for whiskers. The Δ15N values ranged from +2.2 to +4.3‰for blood components and from +2.6 to +4.0‰for whiskers. The TDFs tended to group by tissue, with whiskers having greater Δ13C values than blood components. In contrast, the Δ15N values were greater in serum and plasma than in red blood cells and whiskers. CONCLUSIONS: By providing the first TDF values for five seal species (family Phocidae) and one otariid species (family Otariidae), our study facilitates more accurate mixing models for these species. These values are particularly important for critically endangered Hawaiian monk seals and the three Arctic seal species (bearded, ringed, and spotted) that are faced with a rapidly changing environment. In this article we summarize and provide an analysis and interpretation of selected published sources of information pertaining to pinnipeds (marine mammals that have front and rear flippers). Particular attention is given to traditional tribal relationships with and uses of seals and sea lions. In addition to tribal interviews conducted between 1964 and 2015, we rely on existing literature and research to demonstrate traditional Columbia River tribal hunting of pinnipeds. Standard audiometric data, such as audiograms and critical ratios, are often used to inform marine mammal noise-exposure criteria. However, these measurements are obtained using simple, artificial stimuli--i.e., pure tones and flat-spectrum noise--while natural sounds typically have more complex structure. In this study, detection thresholds for complex signals were measured in (I) quiet and (II) masked conditions for one California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) and one harbor seal (Phoca vitulina). In Experiment I, detection thresholds in quiet conditions were obtained for complex signals designed to isolate three common features of natural sounds: Frequency modulation, amplitude modulation, and harmonic structure. In Experiment II, detection thresholds were obtained for the same complex signals embedded in two types of masking noise: Synthetic flat-spectrum noise and recorded shipping noise. To evaluate how accurately standard hearing data predict detection of complex sounds, the results of Experiments I and II were compared to predictions based on subject audiograms and critical ratios combined with a basic hearing model. Both subjects exhibited greater-than-predicted sensitivity to harmonic signals in quiet and masked conditions, as well as to frequency-modulated signals in masked conditions. Modern strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from the Americas are closely related to those from Europe, supporting the assumption that human tuberculosis was introduced post-contact. This notion, however, is incompatible with archaeological evidence of pre-contact tuberculosis in the New World. Comparative genomics of modern isolates suggests that M. tuberculosis attained its worldwide distribution following human dispersals out of Africa during the Pleistocene epoch, although this has yet to be confirmed with ancient calibration points. Here we present three 1,000-year-old mycobacterial genomes from Peruvian human skeletons, revealing that a member of the M. tuberculosis complex caused human disease before contact. The ancient strains are distinct from known human-adapted forms and are most closely related to those adapted to seals and sea lions. Two independent dating approaches suggest a most recent common ancestor for the M. tuberculosis complex less than 6,000 years ago, which supports a Holocene dispersal of the disease. Ultrasonic coded transmitters (UCTs) are high-frequency acoustic tags that are often used to conduct survivorship studies of vulnerable fish species. Recent observations of differential mortality in tag control studies suggest that fish instrumented with UCTs may be selectively targeted by marine mammal predators, thereby skewing valuable survivorship data. In order to better understand the ability of pinnipeds to detect UCT outputs, behavioral high-frequency hearing thresholds were obtained from a trained harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) and a trained California sea lion (Zalophus californianus). Thresholds were measured for extended (500ms) and brief (10ms) 69 kHz narrowband stimuli, as well as for a stimulus recorded directly from a Vemco V16-3H UCT, which consisted of eight 10ms, 69 kHz pure-tone pulses. Detection thresholds for the harbor seal were as expected based on existing audiometric data for this species, while the California sea lion was much more sensitive than predicted. Given measured detection thresholds of 113 dB re 1 μPa and 124 dB re 1 μPa, respectively, both species are likely able to detect acoustic outputs of the Vemco V16-3H under water from distances exceeding 200m in typical natural conditions, suggesting that these species are capable of using UCTs to detect free-ranging fish. With the public health community and general population more concerned with influenza than ever before, it is important to explore all potential vectors for the next pandemic. Potential sources include pinnipeds (seals and sea lions). Between subsistence hunting, managed animals, and shared shoreline habitat, humans are more likely to interact with pinnipeds than any other marine mammal. Sealpox, a zoonotic disease affecting pinnipeds (seals and sea lions), can occur among captive and convalescing animals. We surveyed 1 worker each from 11 marine mammal centers and interviewed 31 other marine mammal workers to ascertain their knowledge of and experience with sealpox virus and to identify factors associated with sealpox virus outbreaks among pinnipeds in marine rehabilitation facilities. Demographic and health data were obtained for 1,423 pinnipeds at the 11 facilities. Among the 23 animals in which sealpox was clinically diagnosed, 4 arrived at the facility ill, 11 became ill <5 weeks after arrival, and 2 became ill ≥5 weeks after arrival; the timing of illness onset was unknown for 6 animals. Most infections occurred in pinnipeds <1 year of age. Nine affected animals were malnourished; 4 had additional illnesses. Sealpox had also occurred among workers at 2 facilities. Sealpox is a noteworthy zoonosis of rehabilitating convalescing pinnipeds; workplace education can help to minimize risks for human infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hookworms are intestinal blood-feeding nematodes that parasitize and cause high levels of mortality in a wide range of mammals, including otariid pinnipeds. Recently, an empirical study showed that inbreeding (assessed by individual measures of multi-locus heterozygosity) is associated with hookworm-related mortality of California sea lions. If inbreeding increases susceptibility to hookworms, effects would expectedly be stronger in small, fragmented populations. We tested this assumption in the New Zealand sea lion, a threatened otariid that has low levels of genetic variability and high hookworm infection rates. Using a panel of 22 microsatellites, we found that average allelic diversity (5.9) and mean heterozygosity (0.72) were higher than expected for a small population with restricted breeding, and we found no evidence of an association between genetic variability and hookworm resistance. However, similar to what was observed for the California sea lion, homozygosity at a single locus explained the occurrence of anaemia and thrombocytopenia in hookworm-infected pups (generalized linear model, F = 11.81, p < 0.001) and the effect was apparently driven by a particular allele (odds ratio = 34.95%; CI: 7.12–162.41; p < 0.00001). Populations of sea otters, seals and sea lions have collapsed across much of southwest Alaska over the past several decades. The sea otter decline set off a trophic cascade in which the coastal marine ecosystem underwent a phase shift from kelp forests to deforested sea urchin barrens. This interaction in turn affected the distribution, abundance and productivity of numerous other species. Ecological consequences of the pinniped declines are largely unknown. Increased predation by transient (marine mammal-eating) killer whales probably caused the sea otter declines and may have caused the pinniped declines as well. Springer et al. proposed that killer whales, which purportedly fed extensively on great whales, expanded their diets to include a higher percentage of sea otters and pinnipeds following a sharp reduction in great whale numbers from post World War II industrial whaling. Critics of this hypothesis claim that great whales are not now and probably never were an important nutritional resource for killer whales. We used demographic/energetic analyses to evaluate whether or not a predator–prey system involving killer whales and the smaller marine mammals would be sustainable without some nutritional contribution from the great whales. In 2017, Robert Pitman and colleagues published a remarkable study recounting many instances of humpback whales ( I Megaptera novaeangliae i ) interrupting the hunting behavior of orcas ( I Orcinus orca i ) ( I Mar Mammal Sci i 2017; B 33 b : 7-58). Perhaps, since orcas attack young humpbacks, taking the opportunity to ruin a mammal-eating orca pod's day helps reinforce an ultimately self-serving message: don't mess with our calves! Parent–offspring conflict theory is well supported by theoretical arguments. However, empirical observations are often difficult to interpret and have contradicted one of its most appealing predictions that parent and offspring should disagree over killing of nest or littermates. We present the first examples of deadly conflict between siblings of different cohorts. In Galápagos fur seals ( Arctocephalus galapagoensis) and sea lions ( Zalophus wollebaeki), mothers often wean their single offspring at 2 years. This leads to a situation where up to 23% of all pups are born while the older sibling is still being nursed. Younger siblings are disadvantaged by being born lighter than neonates without older still dependent siblings. Pups born while an older sib is still dependent grow less in early life (fur seal) and suffer increased early mortality (both species) through direct aggression or scramble competition with the older sibling. This effect is much stronger in years of high sea surface temperature (El Niño) indicating low marine productivity and if the older offspring is a male. In both species, mothers interfere aggressively in this conflict by defending the younger offspring. In years of El Niño, intense resistance to maternal aggression by the older offspring happens frequently in the fur seal. Such resistance against weaning can induce maternal neglect of the newborn. Given substantial year to year variation in offspring growth, maternal aggression forces weaning in the older sibling only if it has reached sufficient size to support itself by foraging. Steller sea lions ( Eumetopias jubatus) are known to have occupied the same terrestrial haul-out and rookery sites across the North Pacific Rim for centuries, but it is not known why they choose and stay at these locations, or what defines their preferred habitat. Classifying and comparing the shoreline type of haul-outs and rookeries against sites not used by Steller sea lions showed that they preferentially locate their haul-outs and rookeries on exposed rocky shorelines and wave-cut platforms. However, no preference was found for selecting rookeries on sheltered shore types. Shoreline types used less frequently by sea lions included fine-to-medium-grained sand beaches, mixed sand and gravel beaches, gravel beaches, and sheltered rocky shores. Quantifying the shoreline types used by sea lions confirms anecdotal reports of habitat preferences and may prove useful in identifying and protecting sea lion terrestrial habitat, or in forecasting how climate change might affect the distribution of sea lions. Aerial and land-based sighting surveys were conducted to clarify the distribution of Steller sea lions during winter in the northern Sea of Japan, along the west coast of Hokkaido, from 2001 to 2003. Aerial surveys revealed that sea lions gathered around the Rishiri-Rebun Islands in March 2002 and 2003, and between Iwanai and Cape Obana in February 2003. Higher numbers of sea lions were also confirmed at Cape Ofuyu and Cape Kamui on the central-west coast compared to that at the haul-out sites in the 1980s on the upper-west coast in March 2002 and 2003. Additionally, fisherman observed sea lions along the coast of the Tsugaru Strait from February to May 2003, where the presence of sea lions was not reported in the 1980s. These facts suggest that sea lions have recently expanded their distribution southward. Land-based surveys at the recent haul-out sites indicated that sea lions in the central-west coast were composed mainly of adult and subadult males (average: Cape Ofuyu 75.2%, Cape Kamui 69.5%), which stayed from November 2002 to May 2003. Abstract: Poxviruses of seals and sea lions have been tentatively identified as both orthopoxviruses and parapoxviruses, but their exact identity remained unconfirmed. Here, poxviral DNA sequences were generated from 39 clinical cases and compared to sequences from earlier poxvirus isolates from seals (Phocidae) and sea lions (Otariidae). Six genetically distinct poxvirus strains were detected, of which three were previously unrecognized. All detected strains were closely related to the parapoxviruses, confirming their classification as members of the genus Parapoxvirus. A phylogenetic analysis showed that pinniped parapoxviruses form a monophyletic group within the genus Parapoxvirus. Parapoxviruses from Atlantic pinnipeds were phylogenetically distant from those of Pacific pinnipeds. Parapoxviruses from phocids and otariids that inhabit the same geographical region were also phylogenetically distant, suggesting that parapoxviruses are not commonly transmitted between free-ranging phocids and otariids. However, one strain was detected in two otariid species, suggesting that pinniped parapoxviruses are capable of infecting multiple species within a phylogenetic family. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Pinnipeds (seals and sea lions) have developed a specialised respiratory system to cope with living in a marine environment. They have a highly reinforced lung that can completely collapse and reinflate during diving without any apparent side effects. These animals may also have a specialised surfactant system to augment the morphological adaptations. The surface activity of surfactant from four species of pinniped (California sea lion, Northern elephant seal, Northern fur seal and Ringed seal) was measured using a captive bubble surfactometer (CBS), and compared to two terrestrial species (sheep and cow). The surfactant of Northern elephant seal, Northern fur seal and Ringed seal was unable to reduce surface tension (γ) to normal levels after 5min adsorption (61.2, 36.7, and 46.2±1.7mN/m, respectively), but California sea lion was able to reach the levels of the cow and sheep (23.4mN/m for California sea lion, 21.6±0.3 and 23.0±1.5mN/m for cow and sheep, respectively). All pinnipeds were also unable to obtain the very low γ min achieved by cow (1.4±0.1mN/m) and sheep (1.5±0.4mN/m). These results suggest that reducing surface tension to very low values is not the primary function of surfactant in pinnipeds as it is in terrestrial mammals, but that an anti-adhesive surfactant is more important to enable the lungs to reopen following collapse during deep diving. Populations of seals, sea lions, and sea otters have sequentially collapsed over large areas of the northern North Pacific Ocean and southern Bering Sea during the last several decades. A bottom-up nutritional limitation mechanism induced by physical oceanographic change or competition with fisheries was long thought to be* largely responsible for these declines. The current weight of evidence is more consistent with top-down forcing. Increased predation by killer whales probably drove the sea otter collapse and may have been responsible for the earlier pinniped declines as well. We propose that decimation of the great whales by post World War II industrial whaling caused the great whales' foremost natural predators, killer whales, to begin feeding more intensively on the smaller marine mammals, thus "fishing-down" this element of the marine food web. The timing of these events, information on the abundance, diet, and foraging behavior of both predators and prey, and feasibility analyses based on demographic and energetic modeling are all consistent with this hypothesis. Tuberculosis in seals is caused by a member of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex referred to as the ‘seal bacillus’. Fluorescent amplified-fragment length polymorphism (FAFLP) analysis was applied to isolates from four Australian and six Argentinean seals and compared with FAFLP pattern for standard strains belonging to the M. tuberculosis complex. The FAFLP profiles derived from EcoRI/MseI restricted fragments of blind coded DNA samples differentiated the seal bacillus from other members of the M. tuberculosis complex. According to the phylogenetic analysis performed using FAFLP data, seal bacilli appear to have diverged significantly from other members of the M. tuberculosis complex. We describe the suitability of a panel of 19 highly polymorphic markers for rapid identification and comparative genomic analyses of the seal bacillus strains. It is likely that these bacilli got separated from the M. tuberculosis lineage as a result of different insertion deletion events occurring on a genome wide scale. Our analysis reveals that the seal bacillus and M. bovis are genetically related and therefore, might have originated from a common ancestor. Pinnipeds are effective bioindicators of the abundance of their prey and changes in marine productivity due to natural oceanographic phenomena or fishery exploitation. In Uruguay, two pinniped species breed sympatrically: Arctocephalus australis, with a growing population, and Otaria flavescens, which has a declining population. Given their contrasting population growth trends, we explored how their trophic patterns varied across age-classes over seven decades using dentin collagen δ13C and δ15N values in teeth sampled from stranded organisms. Dentin collagen accumulates isotopic information in annual growth layers, providing sequential information on an animal’s diet throughout its life. Dentin collagen annual growth layers in 50 A. australis teeth and 37 O. flavescens teeth from individuals stranded over ~ 70 years were processed for isotopic analysis. Importantly, δ13C decreased over time in both species (0.024-0.027‰ year-1 in A. australis, and 0.028-0.035‰ in O. flavescens); this pattern reflects the influence of the Suess Effect, a global phenomenon of decreasing δ13C values in marine ecosystems. Isotopic values were relatively constant over time, suggesting that these species maintained a stable trophic niche during the seven decades examined, with O. flavescens exhibiting higher δ13C and δ15N values. Within each species, there was considerable isotopic niche overlap between different age-classes; however, both species occupied different isotopic niches regardless of age-class during all decades. The isotopic niches of the two species converged during the 2000s. Primarily responsible for this convergence were adult A. australis, which overlapped with juvenile and young adult O. flavescens. Moreover, we propose that before the 2000s A. australis fed on prey from different trophic levels while O. flavescens varied its feeding habitat. Our results suggest that these top predators reflect anthropogenic and environmental changes that have occurred over the last seven decades in Uruguayan waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
