The book "Prophets and Patrons: The French University and the Emergence of the Social Sciences," by Terry Nicholas Clark is a work in the sociology of knowledge primarily, but it has inevitable value, given its subject, to historians of social thought and to general students of social organization. Professor Clark's question serves as the pivot for his examination of the rise of the social sciences at the turn of the century in France and more specifically, of the strength of the Durkheim school in relation to the ideas of some of the non and anti-Durkheimians of the time. Terry Clark is concerned with French university as a medium for the social sciences, which leads him to a short but useful description of the academic system in France in Durkheim's day and to the importance of clusters in the making of reputations and the establishing of persisting influence. As Clark shows, the success of Durkheimians, with only rare exceptions, took place within the established structure. If they were attacked as ideologues outside the university in the Latin Quarter, within they were commonly thought of as imperialists.

The article presents a report from the representative to the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) of the U.S. The fifty-second annual meeting of the ACLS was held in New York city. Some of the items reported at the ACLS meeting in the report are as follows. The 50th Anniversary drive was concluded during the preceding year, and the ACLS is now reasonably well assured of income sufficient to defray expenses of a central establishment. The Ford Foundation's grant makes certain the continuation of a solid program of fellowships and grants. The ACLS Fellowship Program has been almost doubled by a supplementary grant of $1,200,000 from the Ford Foundation. Interest of the ACLS in computer activities continues to increase. The Council's Committee on Information Technology serves as the selection committee for its program of Awards for Computer-Oriented Research in the Humanities. ACLS Area-Programs, particularly those in Slavic and East European Studies and in South Asia Studies continue to flourish, helped by substantial grants from the Ford Foundation.
