In this article, Julio Antonio Yanes Mesa proposes a methodology to expand the contents of classic Spanish journalism stories to the entire national territory, including peripheral regions such as the Canary Islands. The author argues that this proposal enriches knowledge by considering people's experiences and reflecting the reality of different regions of Spain. The importance of considering the influences of both Europe and America on the communicative model of the Canary Islands is highlighted. In addition, the history of journalism in the Canary Islands and its treatment in various works is analyzed, as well as the British presence on the islands and the relationship with Latin America. The article also discusses the dynamics of journalism in the Canary Islands during different periods, such as the period from 1868 to 1874 and the Second Republic in Spain. Canarian newspapers that carried out their work with freedom and independence during the Second Republic are mentioned, and the financial autonomy of Canarian newspapers during that period is highlighted. The document provides a list of books and articles related to the history of journalism in Spain and the Canary Islands. In summary, the author proposes a methodology from the "periphery" of the Canary Islands to address the history of Spanish journalism and avoid the reductionism of stories developed from the "center". Understanding how the Spanish state and the Canary Islands dealt with the cayuco crisis and its aftermath is instructional for the current migrant crisis facing Europe. Employing the theoretical lenses of liberal intergovernmentalism and neo-institutionalism, this article studies how the EU has shaped the governance of migration policy using both hard and soft governance. Hard governance refers to coercive legally imposed mechanisms, whereas soft governance may be cooperation or voluntary adoption of EU models. During the cayuco crisis, as thousands of African migrants arrived to the Canary Islands, the Spanish government sought assistance from the EU and its member states via Frontex, and adopted the EU's externalization of migration policy with Plan Africa, an aid package to stop immigration at its source. Both Frontex and Plan Africa were EU policy prescriptions, that exhibit EU soft governance and the Europeanization of migration policy. As a result, Spain achieved its goal of stopping the flow of irregular migrants, yet the state remained the main actor in migration policy, as liberal intergovernmentalists assert. However, the EU-inspired policies that Spain ultimately adopted during the cayuco crisis have been emulated in the current migrant crisis, inspiring a model for present and future migration policies in Europe. [EN] A revised checklist of eight of the twelve known palaearctic species in the subgenus Macroneura of Eupelmus occurring in the Iberian Peninsula, Balearic and Macaronesian islands (Azores, Balearics, Canaries, Madeira) is presented. Records of the distribution in the region of all the revised species are given with new biological notes, including host insects and plants. Eupelmus (Macroneura) seculatus is a new record for the Canary Islands and Eupelmus(Macroneura) vesicularis is recorded for the first time in Portugal. Additionally, a study of Malaise trap captures of species of Macroneura in an arid habitat in south-east Spain is presented and discussed. 358 individuals belonging to six species were collected and identified. The Canary Islands are a territory geographically distant from the Iberian Peninsula and with specific conditions that sometimes causes that the authors often do not focus their attention on the Archipelago in their research. That is why this project will expose the digital journalism of the Canary Islands compared to the rest of Spain, briefly reviewing its beginnings, defining what the Canary Islands digital press consumer is like and what is the position of the canarian newspapers in comparison to those of the rest of the country, in order to find out their traffic and audience of them, as well as to determine if there is a plurality of press in the Canary Islands.

Objective To determine the status of tobacco consumption in the Canary Islands during 2000-2015, according to social class. Location Canary Islands. Participants General population cohort, with contacts in 2000 (n = 6,729), 2008 (n = 6,171) and 2015 (n = 4,705). Main measurements Smoking, gender, age, and social class. Results Consumption decreased by 6% (5-7%, P < .001) in general, being more accentuated in the period 2000-2008 (5%). The decrease was greater in men, although they continued to smoke more than women, with a prevalence of 25% (24-26%) compared to 18% (17-19%, P < .001). A decrease in consumption was only observed in the younger groups (6% [3-5%], P = .011) and intermediate ages (7% [6-8%], P < .001). A similar decrease was observed in all the social classes, but there was a higher prevalence of smoking in the upper class: 24% (23-25%) in 2015 (P < .001). By jointly assessing gender, age, and social class, younger and middle age men had the greatest decreases in consumption: 8% (7-9%) low and upper classes, 10% (9-11%) middle class. In the lower social class, younger women continue to smoke more (27%) although more of them quit smoking (14%), a phenomenon that occurred in the middle class at intermediate ages. Conclusions The evolution of tobacco consumption in the Canary Islands follows a pattern similar to that of mainland Spain. The abandonment of tobacco consumption has slowed down in the period 2008-2015, especially in men, and middle and upper social classes. Volcanic areas create spectacular landscapes that contain a great diversity of geoheritage. The study of this geoheritage enables us to inventory, characterise, protect and manage its geodiversity. The Canary Islands are a group of subtropical active volcanic oceanic islands with a great variety of magma types and eruption dynamics that give rise to a wide diversity of volcanic features and processes. The aim of this paper is to identify, for the first time, the diversity of volcanic geoheritage of the Canary Islands and to appraise the protection thereof. To this end, a geomorphological classification is proposed, taking into account the features and processes directly related to volcanism, such as those resulting from erosion and sedimentary processes. The main findings demonstrate that the volcanic geoheritage of the Canary Islands is extremely varied and that this geodiversity is safeguarded by regional, national and, international protection and management frameworks. Even so, and given the enormous pressure of coastal tourism on the coastlines of the islands, we believe that continuing efforts should be made to conserve and manage their volcanic and non-volcanic geoheritage, so that these places can continue to be enjoyed in the form of geotourism.

Irregular immigration arriving on small boats from the African continent has placed the Canary Islands at the center of the national and European political agenda regarding immigration. It has also converted the archipelago into an observatory where the connections between migration policies and human rights can be analyzed. One of the main arguments of this article is that despite the archipelagos long history of receiving immigrants and the presence of other groups of irregular migrants, what triggered the incorporation of immigration into the regional political agenda and political rhetoric was the flow of clandestine African immigrants at the end of the 1990s. EnglishThis article examines the debate on the Spanishness of the Canary Islands in the second half of the twentieth century (1956-1981) with a twofold objective: to analyse the international controversy on whether the archipelago was a territory to be decolonized, and to examine the Spanish Government’s reaction to this issue. The work draws on detailed bibliographical study, together with international organisations documentation, the published press, and some protagonists’ testimonies. The involvement of various actors –both national, regional and international– provides an idea of the dimension of this controversial debate. The findings of this research reveal that the controversy was not anecdotic, but lasted for more than two decades. In fact, there was a real possibility that the Canary Islands could go through a decolonization process.

A participatory scenario building process for small island resilience is carried out for the Tenerife Island (Canary Islands, Spain). The plot of the scenarios is based on institutional analyses and participatory techniques where key local stakeholders and citizens were engaged. A press analysis was done in order to identify the main narratives regarding the current level of resilience and its potentialities in the future, as well as to identify the stakeholders involved in the discourse. Meanwhile, in-depth interviews, questionnaires and focus groups were carried out to engage the stakeholders and local citizens in the exploration of future scenarios for resilience in Tenerife. The scenarios brought out three potential pathways for 2040. The first scenario prolongs the current business-as-usual situation where the island may be defined as highly vulnerable to external shocks, especially due to its high external dependency on food and energy production, as well as the need for energy allocated to water desalination. The second scenario relies on an active local community that encourages increasing rates of local food production and a 100 % renewable energy system such that desalination may no longer depend on fossil fuels. Lastly, the third scenario depicts a pathway where several active groups of people engage in building resilience without the umbrella of local governments, due to politicians who are no longer seen as part of the solution, but part of the problem. Now, collaborative community networks in bio-agriculture, fog-water collection, and cooperative-based renewable energy production become increasingly important. Findings show that resilience is understood as the reinforcement of the nexus between water-energy-food sovereignty that might imply a change in the local economic model such that poverty can be reduced and climatic shocks can be buffered n la isla de Tenerife (Islas Canarias, España) se lleva a cabo un proceso de construcción de escenarios participativos para la resiliencia en las islas pequeñas.

New data on the distribution, biology and phenology of 25 brown lacewings species (Insecta, Neuroptera: Hemerobiidae) of Iberian and Canaries fauna are given. The species Hemerobius bolivari Banks, 1910, widely distributed in the Neotropical Region, is recorded for the first time in Europe as a new invasive species, from specimens collected on Thaumastocoris peregrinus Carpintero & Dellapé, 2006 (Hemiptera: Thaumastocoridae) colonies on Eucalyptus in Lisbon (Portugal). This brown lacewing species, along with Sympherobius gayi Navás, 1910, also known from South America, is the second invasive species of neotropical origin, belonging to this family, that is recorded in the Iberian Peninsula, both from Portugal. We also mention several species that have been seldom recorded in the Iberian Peninsula, and among them Wesmaelius ravus (Withycombe, 1923) is recorded for the second time in the Iberian Peninsula, now from Sierra Nevada (Granada). From samplings made in southern Spain (Malaga, Granada) Micromus angulatus (Stephens, 1836) shows activity as imagoes during winter time (the entire year in the Iberian Peninsula, including this area), and these data seem also to confirm its link to grass vegetation.

The educational model of the pre-military and military schools, despite their specific variations over time due to their adaptation to successive governments and the existing legislative regulations, has an invariable characteristic: enter at the young men in the circles of the army, instructing them in practices tactics, in their Catholic dogmas - except the republican period - and through own corporate spirit of the institution. In this line of action, and to be more widely accepted by civil society, is presented as modernization, educational and regeneration proposal for broad social projection. However, the compensation to stimulate such studies among young men had little incentive, for learning the first letters and redemption of certain stretch of military service just encouraged the lower and depressed sectors of the social ladder who would preferably intended.

In the following article we will lay out the urban development guidelines which two municipalities of Gran Canaria have undergone, Gáldar and Guía which, together with Agaete, make up the Northwest sector of the island. The urban expansion took place mainly on the coastal strip of both municipalities, below 300m of altitude above sea level due to the strong demographic increase that took place there at the beginning of the 20th century as a result of agricultural development, particularly in banana and tomato farming; and stemming from the fact that, from the sixties onwards, and more precisely the eighties, property developers realized that the transformation of rural land into urban could be very profitable. This fact caused an urban expansion in the aforementioned strip by means of the legal norm known as the Urban Development Agreement. With this agreement an abstraction was made of the Subsidiary Planning Regulations and furthermore a great connivance between local powers and property developers took place. All with the aim of warranting the private interests of the latter, over the general welfare of the community, in these municipalities., En el artículo que se presenta a continuación damos a conocer las pautas del desarrollo urbano que han experimentado dos municipios de Gran Canaria, Gáldar y Guía, que, con Agaete conforman el sector noroeste de esa isla.

All with the aim of warranting the private interests of the latter, over the general welfare of the community, in these municipalities.

[EN] Irregular immigration arriving on small boats from the African continent has placed the Canary Islands at the center of the national and European political agenda regarding immigration. It has also converted the archipelago into an observatory where the connections between migration policies and human rights can be analyzed. One of the main arguments of this article is that despite the archipelago’s long history of receiving immigrants and the presence of other groups of irregular migrants, what triggered the incorporation of immigration into the regional political agenda and political rhetoric was the fl ow of clandestine African immigrants at the end of the 1990s. The increased frequency with which these boats began to arrive on its shores in the fi rst half of 2006 has reignited and intensifi ed the debate on population, territory and identity in the archipelago, [ES] La llegada de inmigración irregular en embarcaciones procedentes del cercano continente africano a las Islas Canarias ha situado a este archipiélago en el centro de la agenda política española y europea sobre inmigración. 14 pages, 18 figures., [EN] Recognized as occurring in the Iberian Peninsula and Canary Islands are nine species of Calosota, seven species of Eusandalum and one species of Pentacladia in Calosotinae, and one species each of Metapelma and Neanastatus in Neanastatinae. Taxonomic and biological data, keys to species of Calosota and Eusandulum, and descriptions of two new species of Calosota are provided. The following new synonymies are proposed: Calosota fumipennis Bolívar under C. aestivalis Curtis, C. lixobia Erdös under C. obscura Ruschka, C. matritensis Bolívar and C. modesta Bolívar under C. viridis Masi. A supplementary note on Brasema (Eupelminae) in Spain is appended with Brasema ephedricola Askew synonymized under Brasema stenus (Boucek) (new combination)., [ES] Se revisan las especies de la Península Ibérica e Islas Canarias de las subfamilias Calosotinae y Neanastatinae (Eupelmidae). Finalmente se añade una nota suplementaria sobre Brasema (Eupelminae) y Brasema ephedricola Askew se sinonimiza con Brasema stenus (Boucek) (combinación nueva)., The work was assisted by grants to RRA for studies at the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Madrid from the European Commission Human Potential Programme through BIODIBERIA, the European Community´s Programme Structuring the European Research Area under SYNTHESYS, and from Ministry of Education and Science, to J.
