Abstract

The design, development, and successful implementation of pop-up Langmuir probes installed in the water-cooled divertor of W7-X are described. The probes are controlled by drive coils (actuators) installed behind the divertor plates. These drive coils make use of the magnetic field in W7-X to move the probe tips into and out of the plasma. The drive coils were installed in the vacuum vessel after extensively testing the durability of the coils and analyzing the criteria for safe operation. The probe design is carefully tailored for each of the 36 probe tips in order to be suitable for the different magnetic field configurations used in W7-X and ensure that the probes do not present leading edges to the magnetic flux tubes. An electronic bridge circuit is used for measurement to compensate for the effects of signal propagation time on the long cable lengths used. The diagnostic is integrated with the segment control of W7-X for automated operation and control of the diagnostic. The evaluation of the results from the plasma operation is presented after accounting for appropriate sheath expansion for negative bias voltage on the probes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Wendelstein 7-X(W7-X), an optimized stellarator, conducted its first divertor operation. It uses an island divertor concept for the heat and particle exhaust. Large wetted areas of up to 1.5 m2 have been reached, showing the benefits of the divertor concept and very efficient heat flux spreading. Moreover, a positive scaling of the wetted area with increasing SOL power is observed, which is important for operations at high input power. A definition of the wetted area is made based on thermographic camera observations for the 3D structure of W7-X with comparability to the definitions of other machines (e.g. tokamaks). Abstract

In 2015, the optimized stellarator Wendelstein 7-X stellarator (W7-X) started with operation. The main objective of W7-X is the demonstration of the integrated reactor potential of the optimized stellarator line. An important element of this mission is the achievement of high heating power and high confinement in the steady-state operation. The approach to this mission is the following three steps. First, plasmas were produced in a limiter configuration [operation phase (OP 1.1)], then a test divertor unit is being installed (temporary divertor unit) for the next campaign, OP 1.2, before the full steady-state capability will be achieved implementing active cooling of all in-vessel components and a steady-state high heat-flux divertor. In December 2015, the first helium plasma was generated using electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH), in February 2016, the working gas was switched to hydrogen. The first OP (OP 1.1) was successfully finished in March 2016. At the end of OP 1.1, the discharge duration was close to 6 s, the limit for the integrated heating power was increased to 4 MJ and electron temperatures of ~10 keV were achieved. Due to the low densities in the range of 1019 cm−3 and the pure electron heating by ECRH, the ion temperatures reached only 2 keV. At present, W7-X is undergoing the next completion phase, including the installation of the test divertor unit, the installation of the carbon tiles on the inner plasma vessel wall, an upgrade of existing diagnostics, and the installation of new diagnostics. Abstract

The superconducting stellarator Wendelstein 7-X is currently being commissioned. First plasmas are expected for the second half of 2015. W7-X is designed to overcome the main drawbacks of the stellarator concept and simultaneously demonstrate its intrinsic advantages relative to the tokamak—i.e., steady-state operation without the requirement of current drive or stability control. An elaborate optimization procedure was used to avoid excessive neoclassical transport losses at high plasma temperature, while simultaneously achieving satisfactory equilibrium and stability properties at high $\beta $ in combination with a viable divertor concept. In addition, fast-ion confinement must be consistent with the requirements of alpha-heating in a power plant. Plasma operation of Wendelstein 7-X follows a staged approach following the successive completion of the in-vessel components. The main objective of Wendelstein 7-X is the demonstration of steady-state plasma at fusion relevant plasma parameters. Wendelstein 7-X will address major questions for the extrapolation of the concept to a power plant. These include divertor operation at high densities, plasma fueling at high central temperatures, avoiding impurity accumulation, and an assessment of the effect of neoclassical optimization on turbulent transport and fast-ion confinement. Abstract

The Columbia Non-neutral Torus is a stellarator devoted to non-neutral and electron-positron plasma research. Confinement and transport processes have been studied in some detail now, and an understanding of these processes has emerged. Transport is driven in two ways: The presence of internal rods, and the presence of neutrals. Both transport processes are clearly distinguished experimentally, and a model of the rod driven transport has been developed, yielding very good agreement with experimental data. The neutral driven transport is faster than originally expected and indicates the presence of unconfined orbits in CNT. Numerical modeling of the electron orbits in CNT confirms the existence of loss orbits and shows that a flux surface conforming electrostatic boundary will greatly improve confinement. Such a boundary has now been installed in CNT, with initial results showing an order of magnitude improvement in confinement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

An instability has been observed in non-neutral plasmas confined on magnetic surfaces in the presence of a finite ion fraction [Phys. Rev. Letters 100, 065002 (2008)]. The dependence of the frequency and amplitude of the instability on neutral pressure, magnetic field strength, and ion species show that the mode consists of interacting perturbations of ions and electrons. In the Columbia Non-neutral Torus (CNT) the instability has a poloidal mode number of m = 1. This does not correspond to a rational surface, implying that the parallel force balance of the electron fluid is broken. Abstract

The confinement of pure electron plasmas in the Columbia Non-neutral Torus (CNT) stellarator is limited by the presence of unconfined orbits. The existence of a very large electric field across magnetic surfaces should preclude such unconfined orbits. However variations in the electric potential on magnetic surfaces, inherent to the CNT equilibrium, add to the complexity of the trajectories and lead to bad orbits. We have written a code using magnetic coordinates to integrate the electron drift trajectories in the electric and magnetic fields expected in CNT equilibria. Recently the measured confinement time in the Columbia Non-neutral Torus (CNT) has been increased by nearly an order of magnitude to 190 ms. Previously, enhanced transport caused in part by the mismatch of constant potential and magnetic surfaces limited confinement times to 20 ms. A conducting boundary conforming to the last closed magnetic flux surface has been installed to minimize potential variation along magnetic surfaces, provide new methods to influence the plasma, and act as an external diagnostic. A summary of new results with the conducting boundary installed will be presented, including discussion of how confinement is influenced by neutral pressure, magnetic field strength, and the effect of biasing individual sectors of the mesh. The Columbia Non-neutral Toms (CNT) is a simple stellarator being used to study non-neutral plasmas. At low neutral pressures these plasmas are pure electron plasmas. In this paper some studies of the equilibrium and transport of these plasmas will be described. An axial density variation has now been measured that is roughly the size predicted numerically. The equilibrium of plasmas created by an off-axis emitter have properties that are consistent with global thermal equilibrium. Abstract

We report on the creation and up to 90 ms sustainment of pure electron plasmas confined in a stellarator without internal objects. Injection of positrons into such plasmas is expected to lead to the creation of the first electron-positron plasma experiments. These newly created plasmas will also allow a study of pure electron plasmas without the perturbing presence of internal objects. The plasmas were created by thermionic emission of electrons from a heated, biased filament that was retracted in 20 ms. The confinement of these transient plasmas is different from that of steady state plasmas with internal objects and emissive filaments, and is generally shorter, limited by ion buildup. The decay time is increased by lowering the neutral pressure, lowering the electron plasma temperature, or operating with neutrals with high ionization energies (helium). These findings are all consistent with ion accumulation being the cause for the shorter than expected confinement times. The magnetic field strength also moderately increases the decay times. The deleterious effect of ions is not expected to imply a similar deleterious effect when introducing positrons, but it implies that ion accumulation must be avoided also in an electron-positron experiment. Electron-positron plasmas are unique in their behavior due to the mass symmetry. Strongly magnetized electron-positron, or pair, plasmas are present in a number of astrophysical settings, such as astrophysical jets, but they have not yet been created in the laboratory. Plans for the creation and diagnosis of pair plasmas in a stellarator are presented, based on extrapolation of the results from the Columbia Non-neutral Torus stellarator, as well as recent developments in positron sources. Abstract

Techniques for measuring local plasma potential, density, and temperature of pure-electron plasmas using emissive and Langmuir probes are described. The plasma potential is measured as the least negative potential at which a hot tungsten filament emits electrons. Temperature is measured, as is commonly done in quasineutral plasmas, through the interpretation of a Langmuir probe current-voltage characteristic. Due to the lack of ion-saturation current, the density must also be measured through the interpretation of this characteristic thereby greatly complicating the measurement. Measurements are further complicated by low densities, low cross field transport rates, and large flows typical of pure-electron plasmas. This article describes the use of these techniques on pure-electron plasmas in the Columbia Non-neutral Torus (CNT) stellarator. Measured values for present baseline experimental parameters in CNT are [lowercase_phi_synonym]p=-200±2 V, Te=4±1 eV, and ne on the order of 1012 m-3 in the interior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

An experimental demonstration of a compact stellarator magnetic trap created from four circular coils is presented. The coil manufacturing and assembly tolerances were on the order of 0.5–1%, far less stringent than most other stellarators. The simplicity, loose mechanical tolerances, and low cost of the trap design makes it feasible for stellarators to be used for a variety of novel physics experiments, in addition to their present use for magnetic confinement fusion. The experiment, the Columbia Non-neutral Torus, has several other desirable features such as no significant internal island chains and the lowest aspect ratio, A≤1.9, of any stellarator built to date. Abstract

We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases.
