Rockbursts have become one of the main engineering disasters in deep-buried tunnel, seriously threatening the safety of worker and equipment. To monitor microseismic (MS) events and predict rockburst, in the present study, a MS monitoring system was established in a deep-buried tunnel excavated by tunnel boring machine (TBM). Characteristics of MS events were studied and a prediction method for intense rockburst was proposed by analyzing the temporal–spatial distribution, source parameters, and failure mechanism. The results indicated that most of MS events occurred during the tunneling process and within 15 min after a tunneling cycle completed. The MS events mainly distributed within 15 m before and after the tunneling face, and within approximate 2.0 times of the tunnel diameter. The energy of these MS events mainly ranged from 30 to 100 kJ. The prediction method based on cumulative energy index of per day and cumulative apparent volume cannot predict intense rockburst accurately in the present study, the forecast accuracy less than 60%. The proposed prediction index based on the energy index of per MS event and the apparent volume of per MS event can effectively sharpen the forecast accuracy (> 85%). The failure mechanism of MS events was predominated by tensile failure. While as the rockburst segment transited from mild to intense, the percentage of MS events of mixed failure and shear failure increased, especially shear failure events. Highlights: The temporal and the spatial distribution characteristics of rockburst segment in a deep-buried tunnel were revealed. Microseismic event count, energy, energy index, apparent volume, failure mechanism, and the development process of mild, moderate, and intense rockburst segments were studied. Due to the variability and randomness of the geotechnical media, it is difficult to determine the constitutive parameters of the geotechnical materials in a numerical model. In this paper, a novel probabilistic back-analysis framework to update geotechnical parameters and better predict displacement due to shield excavations has been proposed. The surrogate model for the three-dimensional finite element model of shield tunneling is proposed to improve the computational efficiency based on proper orthogonal decomposition and artificial neural network (POD-ANN). In view of the cumbersome process of training the surrogate model, a training framework based on ABAQUS-PSO is presented. Considering the uncertainty factors such as the prior information of the geotechnical parameters and observation errors, probabilistic back-analysis based on Bayesian theory is implemented. The POD-ANN surrogate model and Bayesian theory are integrated to achieve an efficient back-analysis, and Delayed Rejection Adaptive Metropolis is used to solve the joint posterior distribution of the geotechnical parameters. To corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, it was applied to the displacement prediction of shield tunneling under a railway project. • Deep-buried TBM-excavated coal mine roadways were supported by rockbolts. • Support schemes of installing inclined and perpendicular rockbolts were compared. • Stress concentration and damage of surrounding rocks were quantitatively analyzed. • Loads applied on rockbolts were monitored by self-developed instrumented rockbolts. There is an increasing number of TBMs applied in coal mine roadway excavation projects due to the higher safety, faster tunnelling speed and fewer labor works. Nevertheless, the experiences gained from TBM tunnelling projects of transportation or water conveyance tunnels are not well applicable in underground coal mines because of their special engineering and geological conditions. This paper proposed a case study of the excavation disturbance behaviors and support design of TBM-excavated roadway in Zhangji coal mine in Anhui Province, China. Mechanical properties of roadway surrounding rocks were obtained based on parameters of intact rocks and Rock Quality Designation (RQD) values of rock masses. The Universal Discrete Element Code (UDEC) software was used to establish numerical model of the roadway and micro-parameters are also calibrated. The excavation disturbance behaviors of unsupported roadway were firstly simulated. Moreover, the excavation disturbance behaviors and rockbolts loading characters under two different support schemes were studied and compared based on simulation and monitoring results. In this case, simulation results are in good agreement with monitoring results. Research results and experiences obtained from the working site suggest that installing rockbolts perpendicularly to rock surface can better satisfy the requirements of TBM tunnelling in weak grounds of coal mine roadways. • A novel algorithm for modeling the reinforcement effect after the slurry coagulation was proposed. • A higher computation efficiency for simulating fluid-solid coupling processes under the framework of NMM was achieved. • The effect of the grouting reinforcement in a deeply buried rock tunnel was studied. In this study, a numerical manifold method (NMM) based simulator, which is able to simulate the whole process of grouting reinforcement, including the migration and coagulation process of injected slurries in rock fractures networks, is developed for evaluating the effectiveness of grouting reinforcement in deep rock tunnels. To implement the migration process, the grouting hole generation algorithm, the Bingham fluid model, the migration network searching algorithm as well as the framework for fluid–solid (FS) coupling process are introduced into the zero-thickness cohesive element (ZE) based NMM (Co-NMM). To reflect the reinforcement effect of the slurry coagulation after the migration process, a bonding reinforcement algorithm based on the ZE model is proposed. To improve the computational efficiency, an explicit integration scheme is introduced. To validate and illustrate the capability of the developed method, an uncoupled and a coupled numerical examples are conducted and the simulation results are in good accordance with the analytical solutions or laboratory observations. In addition, a series numerical direct tensile test and uniaxial compressive test are conducted to verify the capability of the proposed bonding reinforcement algorithm. Finally, to demonstrate the capability of the developed simulator in simulating problems with large scale, grouting reinforcement in a deep rock tunnel model is conducted and the predicted results show that the convergence deformation and fragmentation-bulking phenomenon induced by excavation in the deep rock tunnel are effectively controlled through the grouting reinforcement.
