The United States Government Accountability Office has identified three major IT acquisition and management challenges facing federal agencies. These challenges include strengthening oversight and management of IT portfolios, implementing mature IT acquisition and development practices, and building federal IT capacity and capabilities. The report emphasizes the urgent need for federal agencies to take nine critical actions to address these challenges, as many recommendations made since 2010 have not been implemented. The report specifically highlights the need for USDA's FPAC mission area to improve oversight and implement leading practices for IT modernization in the Farmers.gov program, in order to enhance service for farmers, ranchers, and foresters. The recommendations outlined in the report aim to strengthen oversight, enhance strategic planning, improve monitoring of IT investments, and implement leading IT acquisition and development practices to maximize the benefits of federal IT investments and provide essential services to the public.
