Optimizing old urban areas is crucial, particularly in the context of urban aging. These areas typically have a high proportion of elderly residents and require special attention. Thermal comfort significantly influences the utilization of outdoor spaces, yet guidance for urban renewal and design regarding thermal environment improvement remains insufficient. This study focuses on Da Long Wang Xiang (DLWX), a historical district in Zhenjiang City, China, to assess the thermal comfort for the elderly and investigate the urban geometric characteristics that influence it. Both on-site meteorological measurements and numerical modeling were used to observe the variation in the microclimate, and Physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET) was calculated for assessing the thermal comfort. The findings reveal that the elderly have a higher neutral thermal comfort value, exhibited greater tolerance to heat, and are more sensitive to cold compared to other age groups. Moreover, the factors affecting thermal comfort vary across different street orientations. In NW–SE-oriented alleys, the PET is significantly correlated with the width of alleys (W) and the building height-to-alley width ratio (H/W) in both summer and winter. In NW-SW-oriented alleys, PET is significantly correlated with H/W and the Sky View Factor (SVF) in these two seasons. This nuanced understanding emphasizes the necessity of tailored urban-renewal strategies, thereby contributing to the development of more sustainable and inclusive urban environments. Historic districts play an important role in urban planning and protection. While previous research on soundscapes has focused on acoustic comfort or preferences in these districts, the aspect of authenticity has been somewhat overlooked. Therefore, this study proposes a methodology for constructing soundscapes that enhance the authenticity of such districts. Using the grounded theory approach, we identified four key components for enhancing authenticity via soundscapes: the aim of soundscape design, physical and cultural characteristics of soundscapes, the effects of soundscapes, and the influence of spatial characteristics on soundscapes. A theoretical framework was developed to illustrate the enhancement of authenticity in historic districts via soundscapes. To verify the applicability and advancement of the proposed framework, it was compared with methodologies and steps obtained from previous soundscape research in historic districts. This study underscores the significance of soundscape design in creating authenticity in historic districts, thereby contributing to the development of soundscape design in historic districts and offering sustainable solutions for the protection and renewal of urban cultural heritage. The city, like a piece of architecture, is a structure in space, but one of gigantic scale, something perceived only over a long period. A space is termed a place when it acquires an identity. The entirety of urban personality, urban communication, urban conduct, and urban design constitute the urban identity. This research delves into divided urban identities and examines how urban and architectural design influence the fragmentation of the cityscape. It explores the connection between urban environments' physical attributes and the divide of social, cultural, and political identities within cities. This study uses a multidisciplinary method to acquire thorough knowledge by combining architectural studies, urban planning theories, and social-cultural perspectives. The case study of reference is the city of Matera, in southern Italy, which has a unique history of a slow shaping of its urban and productive landscape throughout centuries due to heavy environmental constraints and resource availability and which has suffered forced evacuation and major discontinuities in the past century. Here, the opposing traits of the historical Sassi district and the new town are examined, focusing on their resulting separated urban identities. The study also looks at how divided cities may be reconciled and integrated, emphasizing the relevance of a holistic urban approach for the framing of complex issues. The research proposes methods and best practices for developing inclusive urban settings that promote cohesion and shared identities through the analysis of successful cases of urban regeneration, adaptive reuse of spaces, and participatory design processes. The findings of this research contribute to both academic and practical knowledge by deepening the understanding of the relationship between urban design, architecture, and divided urban identities. It emphasizes the value of comprehensive approaches to urban planning that take into account the social, cultural, and historical settings of cities to foster inclusivity, rapprochement, and the development of common urban identities. In the context of historical districts becoming a key to the urban transformation and high-quality development of Chinese cities, this paper investigates the regeneration of historic environments in China, emphasizing the creation of public value through urban morphology. By analyzing five distinct case studies—Chengdu KuanZhai Alley, Shanghai TianZiFang Alley, Guangzhou EnNing Road, Taiyuan ZhongLou Street, and Beijing NanLuoGu Alley—this study explores the relationship between urban form and public value creation from 2000 to 2020. The research posits that the spatial attribute of "public nature" is central to the regeneration process, highlighting the importance of understanding how urban spaces can foster community engagement and social interaction. An evaluation system is constructed to assess the regeneration of historic areas based on spatial "publicness" and people's perceptions, addressing the need for a more nuanced approach to urban planning. The findings reveal that effective urban regeneration not only preserves historical significance but also enhances the quality of public spaces, thereby contributing to social equity and cultural integrity. This study aims to provide valuable insights for urban planners and policymakers, advocating for a public value-oriented approach to the renewal of historic districts that balances economic development with the preservation of cultural heritage. This study examines the potential of urban landscape transformation to generate and develop new heritage and the role of heritage urbanism in an industrial city. It explores whether the changeover of urban heritage districts in Pittsburgh (PA, USA) can give rise to a novel type of urban heritage. Pittsburgh experienced urban development primarily driven by the presence and accessibility of natural resources, rather than favorable geographical conditions: topography characterized by rugged hills, rock formations, rivers, and stream valleys. The integration of the American-style grid within this unique natural environment resulted in intriguing juxtapositions. Consequently, elements such as bridges, viaducts, stairs, tunnels, and historical inclines gained paramount importance in shaping the urban fabric. The city's remaining preserved or transformed urban heritage is protected through historic districts designated by the Department of City Planning, which enforces specific planning and design guidelines. The study employs a multi-faceted approach combining the concepts of historic stratification (urban palimpsest), integrated urban morphology, space syntax (integration analysis), and heritage urbanism. During the personally conducted long-term fieldwork, the selected case studies described herein (historic districts, university campus, and traditional neighborhood) proved to be the most suitable for demonstrating urban heritage formation through urban landscape transformation. Urban street vitality has been a perennial focus within the domain of urban planning. This study examined spatial patterns of street vitality in the old city of Nanjing during working days and weekends using real-time user datasets (RTUDs). A spatial autoregressive model (SAM) and a multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) model were employed to quantitatively assess the impact of various factors on street vitality and their spatial heterogeneity. This study revealed the following: (1) the distribution of street vitality in the old city of Nanjing exhibited a structure centered around Xinjiekou, with greater regularity and predictability in street vitality on working days than on weekends; (2) eight variables, such as traffic location, road density, and functional density, are positively associated with street vitality, whereas the green view index is negatively associated with street vitality, and commercial location benefits street vitality at weekends but detracts from street vitality on working days; and (3) the influence of variables such as traffic location and functional density on street vitality is contingent on their spatial position. Aims This study aimed to revitalize the historical districts of Shiraz using a foresight methodology, with a focus on the year 2051. Methodology Conducted in 2023 (1402 in the Islamic calendar), the research employed a foresight approach to analyze Shiraz’s historical areas. A researcher-developed questionnaire was utilized for data collection, beginning with a review of existing literature to identify key indicators affecting the revitalization process. These indicators were used to design the research questionnaire, which was validated using the Delphi method. The study’s sample consisted of 30 experts in urban planning, selected through purposive sampling. To assess the key driving forces, foresight tools such as MicMac and Scenario Wizard were applied. Findings Fourteen significant factors impacting the revitalization of Shiraz’s historical fabric were identified, including the degradation of historically significant buildings, limited financial resources for restoration, declining public appreciation of historical buildings, and the underutilization of tourist attractions in these areas. Among the six potential scenarios, the fourth scenario, which exhibited 13 favorable conditions, was deemed the most optimal, followed by the sixth scenario with 12 favorable conditions. The remaining scenarios (first, second, third, and fifth) were classified as critical due to their negative status. The fourth scenario, with a desirability score of 21.10, was the most advantageous, while the fifth scenario, with a critical rate of 33.33%, represented the worst-case scenario. Conclusion Six possible scenarios, each representing different combinations of favorable, static, and critical conditions, may arise in the revitalization of Shiraz’s historical districts. The urban heritage regeneration strategy through walkability is widely accepted. However, in the context of a developing country, the tools to measure walkability, which are crucial for urban planning and development, still need to be improved. This article investigates ways to revitalise a run-down historic riverside area in Bangkok. It develops two indices, the Thai GoodWalk Index (TGWI) and the Thai Walkability Index (TWI). A hybrid of both indices is based on geospatial techniques and technology to optimise problem analysis processes, create problem-solving options, enhance spatial site selection decision capabilities, and assist urban planners in carrying out spatial scenario planning processes. It demonstrates how the GoodWalk Index has been employed to plan and prioritise urban development projects. This is exemplified by the Master Plan for the Regeneration of Kadeejeen-Klongsan, a historic riverside neighbourhood in Bangkok with limitations in density, functional mix of spaces, and access networks, especially in riverfront areas. The building of a city is made up of a complex system of activities that vary in the importance of distribution on a geographical area within the city depending on the city's size and importance to its surrounding region. Due to its ability to examine spatial correlations and variations, the geographer plays an important role in studying and evaluating the various land uses in the city by disclosing the disadvantages and positives associated with their distribution. As a result, the study of the city's functional uses (composition) illustrates the diversity of the city's activities and the activities that exist on its territory. This research is concerned with the study (the impact of population changes on the functional composition of the city of Samarra and future horizons) by clarifying the population changes of the city and its reflection on how the land of the city and the activities that were built on it now and questioned in the future. These functions and analysis of their geographical distribution and the use of planning standards to identify the functional and spatial efficiency of the various jobs, and the extent of these functions to serve the city's population and region. The research showed that the city suffers from an imbalance in the relationship between the population and jobs, such as the commercial function, which contributed to the security conditions in the transfer of this function from the old city to the new quarters without reference to planning standards, as well as the phenomenon of confusion in some residential quarters through which Randomization in the distribution as well as for the educational function, which can be addressed part of its problems through the optimal use of the space available to them .. etc. of other functions. The article is devoted to the classification of regeneration methods of buildings damaged by factors of aging, emergency situations and military events. Regeneration is becoming more urgent due to the destruction of a large number of historical quarters by military aggression. Different methods inherent in the regeneration of destroyed neighborhoods are classified, namely restoration, reconstruction and various options for new construction. The methods are illustrated with examples of their use mainly based on the experience of regeneration of Kyiv Podol district and other historical areas of Ukraine, as well as foreign ones. In the complex regeneration of neighborhoods, the preservation of architectural monuments, the restoration of the most valuable and preserved objects of the historical background building, the reconstruction of a certain part of the built objects that have value due to their facade solutions, new construction with the reproduction of the traditional character of the environment in various forms. At the moment, the new construction takes on the solution of modern urban planning and functional requirements for city centers as much as possible, and also serves as a hub of ideas for engineering reconstruction of the entire quarter, is the basis of sustainable development. With the rapid development of Chinese cities, the spatial pattern in historical districts has deteriorated due to a lack of protection measures. Indigenous communities have taken it upon themselves to expand certain spaces around the original residential buildings in order to meet the demands of modern life. However, this expansion has had a negative impact on the stylistic integrity of historical districts, leading to a conflict between cultural heritage and district protection. This study focuses on Tanhualin, a representative historical district in Wuhan. The study divides the district into 10 sub-areas, extracting a total of 4850 street views and selecting 6752 spontaneous spatial samples from them. Utilizing the Mask R-CNN model, the study uses computer-based deep learning to identify, summarize, and categorize the various forms and functions of these spontaneous spaces. The study also analyzes the negative impact of these spaces on the unity of the historical blocks' interfaces, as well as their positive impact on cultural heritage and the creation of a distinctive atmosphere. Finally, the study proposes reconstruction and renewal strategies from both urban design and architectural design perspectives. These strategies aim to improve the quality of life for indigenous communities, establish a sustainable system for preserving historical imprints, protect the cultural atmosphere of historical blocks, and enhance the adaptability of these blocks in modern cities. The urban renewal and redevelopment in the early 1970s of the Borgia Street area. The City Center mall replaced this old and historic neighborhood of the city. The renewal plan did not provide for new residential accommodations in the redeveloped area. Former residents were marginalized. This massive architectural intervention in Sudbury's inner-city neighborhood was made under a typical modern urban renewal plan belonging to a discernible era of urban revitalization. These renewal plans, mostly conducted in the 1950s and 1960s, resulted in gentrification, spatial segregation, spatial injustice, and the marginalization of deprived people. In detailed interviews with former residents of Borgia Street, we inquired about the main good thing about the Borgia neighborhood that they missed. Their answers were analyzed, coded, and categorized by applying the grounded theory method. People stated that they had lost their childhood memories. They felt lonely, evicted, and unsafe. They had lost their collective memories while suffering from a lack of sense of belonging to the place. We discuss people's deep interconnection with their constructed environment, which is known as place attachment. Modern urban renewal plans made dramatic changes to inner-city neighborhoods and led to large shifts in society in inner-city neighborhoods. We argue that what occurred in Sudbury systematically led to spatial separation and should be considered as a form of spatial injustice. Massive urban interventions in Sudbury and, we surmise, in other similar cities, caused irreversible changes to the composition of these societies and have contributed to spatial injustice. The quality of the urban environment is crucial for societal well-being. Yet, measuring and tracking the quality of urban environment, their evolution, and spatial disparities is difficult due to the amount of on-the-ground data needed to capture these patterns. The growing availability of street view images presents new prospects in identifying urban features. However, the reliability and consistency of these methods across different locations and time remains largely unexplored. We aim to develop a comprehensive index of urban quality and change at the street segment level using Google Street View (GSV) imagery. We focus on eight object classes that indicate urban decay or contribute to an unsightly urban space, such as potholes, graffiti, garbage, tents, barred or broken windows, discolored or dilapidated façades, weeds, and utility markings. We train an object detection model on a dataset of images from different cities and assess the performance of these urban indices. We evaluate the effectiveness of this method in various urban contexts over time and discuss its potential for urban planning and public policy. We demonstrate the use of these indices in three applications: the Tenderloin in San Francisco, the Doctores and Historic Center neighborhoods in Mexico City, and South Bend, Indiana. One of the most volatile sites in Jerusalem is the Palestinian neighbourhood of Silwan, at the heart of which lies the City of David archeological site. Much scholarship focuses on the contemporary tensions that arise from its two contradictory identities: an East Jerusalem Palestinian residential community and a Jewish symbol of a mythical past. This article, by contrast, explores a largely overlooked historical moment that has been key to the shaping of these dynamics: the declaration within merely six weeks after the 1967 war of an Israeli national park around the Old City Walls. The article explores how an unrealized British colonial plan for a green belt around the historic walls of Jerusalem was updated in 1967 by Israeli landscape architects using cutting-edge North American environmentalist ideas. Their blueprint, we argue, was crucial to the shaping of the 'holy basin's' spatial logic, landscape imaginaries, and legal structures, necessary to understand the current turn of events. In this process, we highlight the centrality of incorporating longer-term perspectives in the study of contemporary urban realities, bringing into closer dialogue scholarship on present-day urbanism with historical studies of planning and cities. In the process of old city reconstruction, the extensive management and control system cause the evolution and disintegration of the overall style of historical urban areas, and the phenomenon of "having a district without a city" is widespread. In this regard, based on the policy consciousness of fine management, the research puts forward the goal requirements of guiding and controlling the style of historical urban areas in the new period. In other words, with the "boundary-pattern-unit" nested style system as the route, in the overall background of the integration of history and current style, it sorts out the list of fine controlled styles in the historical urban area under the approachable scale. With the case of Xiangyang Ancient City, this paper discusses the problems and corresponding planning strategies of fine management and control in practice, in order to provide some reflections for the restoration of historical urban features. This paper focuses on how to solve the demand of how to quickly explore more urban space design and layout in terms of the conservation and reuse of historical blocks under computer-aided design technology. Referring to urban inductive patterns, the author establishes an urban space design grammar of historical districts based on shape grammar and pattern language. It forms a complete generative urban space design method involving morphological analysis, rule-making, and scheme generation. Furthermore, taking the typical Russian-style historical block along the Chinese Eastern Railway—the historical district in front of Anda Station as an application example—this paper completed the generative urban space design process of block redevelopment and environmental reconstruction, which, using computer-aided technology, was under the premise of protecting the original historic block fabric. The final two group results of the experimental plot and the other plots of the historical district show that this method can quickly and accurately generate lots of urban space design schemes that meet the designers' pre-thinking, and these schemes can be modified by real-time calculation and interactive operation. In recent years, artificial intelligence technology has widely influenced the design field, introducing new ideas to efficiently and systematically solve urban renewal design problems. The purpose of this study is to create a stylized generation technology for building facade decoration in historic districts, which will aid in the design and control of district style and form. The goal is to use the technical advantages of the conditional generative adversarial network (CGAN) in image generation and style transfer to create a method for independently designing a specific facade decoration style by interpreting image data of historical district facades. The research in this paper is based on the historical district of Putian in Fujian Province and facilitates an experiment of image data acquisition, image processing and screening, model training, image generation, and style matching of the target area. The research found the following: (1) CGAN technology can better identify and generate the decorative style of historical districts. It can realize the overall or partial scheme design of the facade. (2) In terms of adaptability, this method can provide a better scheme reference for historical district reconstruction, facade renovation, and renovation design projects. Especially for districts with obvious decorative styles, the visualization effect is better. In addition, it also has certain reference significance for the determination and design of the facade decoration style of a specific historical building. (3) Lastly, this method can better learn the internal laws of the complex district style and form to generate a new design with a clear decoration style attribute. It can be extended to other fields of historical heritage protection to enhance practitioners' stylized control of the heritage environment and improve the efficiency and capability of professional design. This article reveals that the problem of sedimentation on the coast causes the loss of the old city. Sedimentation caused the Demak sultanate (1478-1586) no longer be on the coast and lose its power as a Maritime kingdom. What was the old Demak city shape? Historical records state that the strait had become a swamp and experienced frequent flooding. After going through three generations from 1478-1546, the fourth king moved the Demak to Prawata Hill (1546-1549 AD). Due to the lack of maps and historical data, we analyze the old Demak using maps and pictures of contemporary Javanese sultanate cities such as Cirebon (1506-present) and Banten (1526-1815). We also use its predecessor kingdom, Majapahit (1293 to 1527 AD) as a reference and the successor sultanate as an analytical tool. The long-lasting sultanate had a city centre that grew and developed with complete urban facilities and infrastructure. The sultanate had a short life; the city core was still intact as the city nucleus, like Demak. Due to geological problems, the king needed more time to complete the city plan with city facilities. Demak was a transitional city from the Hindu/Buddhist-Islamic concept and coastal city to the inland concept. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This research study aims at revealing a planning method for the development of the Souq Waqif-Transit village. Design/methodology/approach: Over the past decade, transit-oriented developments (TODs) have become an international city planning model for promoting sustainable urbanism. On a regional scale, the State of Qatar launched the construction of Doha Metro. The current network consists of three lines with a central interchange station within the city's most vibrant cultural core, i.e., between Msheireb Downtown Doha and Msheireb, near to the Souq Waqif historical site and Al Corniche waterfront promenade. The Qatar National Development Framework emphasizes the importance of stimulating sustainable urban growth by linking the Doha Metro with TODs. Findings: The findings show that the benefits of a strategy for monitoring and assessing the potential benefits of the investigated TOD linked to the analysis of the indices for (1) travel behavior, (2) built environment diversity and (3) other categories specific to the site's historical-heritage preservation. Research limitations/implications: Namely, a comprehensive approach for developing a historical site is/should be grounded in a planning method for enhancing the mixed-used urban fabric, public realm and walkability, and heritage preservation. Social implications: The insights from this research study aim to guide the long-term sustainable urban growth of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) cities in the future. Originality/value: The proposed sustainable growth planning scheme for the Souq Waqif addresses gaps highlighted through design tools of investigation. The missing attributes concern three key factors: (1) mixed-used urban fabric, (2) public realm and walkability and (3) built heritage preservation. The quality of streetscape, corridors, connections and connectivity of pedestrian and walkable network: TOD is not dependent on a singular mode of transport (Doha Metro), but it includes all systems that allow for mass public mobility within the city districts. Integrating other transport systems within mixed-use areas should be reevaluated based on accessibility to such systems, including taxi services, public bus services and public shuttles. Many historic Middle East cities are undergoing social and spatial transformations, and, in many cases, their vernacular built heritage is being transformed or even demolished. This is a challenge for urban planning policies aiming at preserving cities' cultural identities. Monitoring and controlling these processes of urban change and their impacts require new approaches and methodologies to deal with their systemic nature. This paper explores a configurational approach focusing on the spatial locations of traditional houses in the Islamic Middle East city of Herat, Afghanistan. The traditional houses are constructed with local materials and identified with domical vault roofs. They are located in both preserved historic areas and outside. The objective is to develop a spatial analysis linking the street grid hierarchy to the locations of these traditional housing typologies. We question: does the level of accessibility and centrality of a location affect the housing typological substitution? The methodology adopts urban modeling and two types of indicators: configurational (accessibility and centrality models) and typological (traditional and modern houses). Data for both indicators come from 2017 satellite imagery. Results indicate that areas maintaining traditional houses are, on average, less accessible and central than those with modern houses. Lower accessibility and centrality have been translated into heritage preservation inside historic districts. In urban fringes, we also identified the presence of traditional housing typologies resulting from low-income families seeking cheaper construction in lower accessible and less central locations. The goal of this paper is to present a methodology for setting priorities among interventions in the old city center of Florence, going from the conservation to the regeneration of its heritage. The proposed methodology is based on specific methods of analysis of degradation and parameters for the optimization of construction costs. The methodology can be considered an additional part of the Management Plan of the site of the Historic Center of Florence (adopted for the first time in 2016 and now updated with the inclusion of a buffer zone) that "represents an important tool for the conservation and enhancement of the Heritage and is also a source of address for the choices that the Administration is called to adopt regarding the use of the city and its spaces". The application of the method, in addition to being in harmony with some of the action projects of the second macro-area of the new Management Plan, also has points of contact with the provisions of the Municipal Operational Plan that provides for a reinterpretation of the existing building heritage. From the monitoring of individual buildings, aimed at their preservation, we will move to study the relationships that promote the creation of joint construction sites, thus optimizing costs. The public's mental health is obviously impacted by the perception of green quantity in urban streets. As one of the important urban spatial indicators, the Green View Index (GVI) reflects the green quantity of streets, which is helpful in revealing the level of street vegetation from the perspective of pedestrians. The GVI can improve the attraction and the visual experience in urban streets. Taking Qingdao Coastal Streets as an example, the study used OpenStreetMap, Baidu Street View (BSV) image, DeepLabV3+ semantic segmentation, and the SD method to obtain the GVI and Visual Comfort (VICO), and the correlation and influence mechanisms were discussed. The result showed that the greening landscape of the overall Qingdao Coastal Streets was of high quality, and the historic district was the most outstanding. The greening quality was a little low in the transitional district and the western modern district, which should be improved. In addition, the relationship between GVI and VICO showed a strong positive correlation. The spatial distribution of the VICO was more consistent with the GVI. The street VICO was affected by the GVI, plant richness, the street scale, and landscape diversity. Moreover, with the increase of the GVI, the increase trend of the VICO instead gradually decreased. The contribution of this study was not only accurately diagnosing the problems of street greening quality, shedding light on the relationship between GVI and VICO, but also providing theoretical support for urban greening planning and management, especially for healthy street design. During the process of the high-speed urbanization in Chinese cities, the social, economic, and political status and the interaction between each factor have been more focused on urban traditional district renewal. However, the effects on urban microclimate and the residential living conditions in traditional districts are not well discussed, which is strongly related to the living comfort and citizens' well-being. In this study, two typical traditional districts in Xi'an are selected. According to the original situation of building functions and the community characteristics, two renewal plans are proposed by adding vegetation in open spaces (V), and adding vegetation combined with building redevelopment (V&B), in order to balance the living convenience and thermal environment. Via ENVI-met simulation, the effects of the district renewal plans on thermal environment including wind speed, air temperature, and mean radiant temperature are evaluated. This study provides method of environmental evaluation for traditional district renewal, which contributes to sustainable urban planning in historical districts, and provides recommendations for related policy development. The loss of traditional features and place memory, and ultimately vibrancy in historic districts, has attracted substantial attention in today's urban design. Most conventional theories are of the consensus that diversity and accessibility characteristics play important roles in creating street vitality, whereas how these characteristics influence street vitality in historic districts has not been thoroughly explored. Furthermore, it is less clear as to which characteristics exert greater influence. Taking the Drum Tower Muslim District, a historical neighborhood in Xi'an, China, as a case study, this paper employs geospatial data to examine how diversity and accessibility influence street vitality. This study identifies seven factors of diversity and accessibility, and incorporates them into a spatial multivariate regression model for analysis. The results indicate that accessibility makes a stronger impact on the street vitality than diversity does. Furthermore, the closeness of streets, the functional density, the intersection density, the location of public transportation and the density of public infrastructure are the top five factors influencing street vitality. The reason for constructing urban features is to enhance the happiness of local residents in a city. It can also enhance the favorability of the floating population to a city and attract population inflow. In order to clarify the differences of satisfaction with urban features (SWUFs) between natives and floating population and explore their influencing mechanisms. On the bases of a large-scale questionnaire survey data involving 11 cities in the pilot city of an urban physical examination conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban–Rural Development of the People's Republic of China in 2019, this paper used the hierarchical linear model (HLM) to empirically analyze the perception and influencing factors of SWUFs of the floating population and local people. The conclusions are as follows: (1) there are obvious differences between the natives and floating population's SWUFs. And the floating population's evaluation of the urban features is more convincing; (2) the higher level of the city's economy and the higher protection rate of the historic district will both take the higher the SWUFs of the floating population; and (3) floating populations are more sensitive than locals when it comes to perceiving urban features. Based on these conclusions, this paper suggests that the government should start more from the perspective of floating populations when planning and designing urban landscapes and fully consider the influencing factors affecting the satisfaction of floating populations with urban features. In addition, this study can enrich the literature of subjective research on urban features and provide practical suggestions for the concept of people-centered urban construction. This article attempts to analyze the comprehensive urban plan commissioned by the municipality of Jerusalem from Brown Engineers International in 1963 in light of the status of the city within Jordanian governance and politics, and also compared to earlier British plans. This plan was the basis for the 1966 town scheme submitted to the Jordanian government just one year before the 1967 war by Henry Kendall, who was in charge of city planning for the municipality between 1963 and 1966. Faced with the extreme reduction of the space for urban development after the division of the city, the plan ambitioned to lay the basis for a “complete city” and to compensate for the lack of vital infrastructures. For the Old City, the plan sought to further approaches to preservation initiated during the Mandate period, while calling for the creation of residential neighborhoods outside of it. With the gradual improvement of urban construction, more and more experts and the public realized that the speed of urban development be reasonable, which caused urban regeneration to turn to a new-minded "urban micro-regeneration". "Micro-regeneration" is an extension of the concept to the direction of urban construction. The concept of micro-regeneration was first applied to the regeneration of individual buildings in the old city. The research on the intervention of public art in urban micro-regeneration is still in its infancy in China. Barcelona, and especially, its historic center, has undergone a profound transformation from an industrial city to a global tourism and services center. Some authors insist on the destructive nature of the urban regeneration of the historic Barcelona district of Raval as a process of de-identification of the city center or as an intentional falsification of its identity to turn it into a tourist space. However, as we discuss in this article, urban branding and urban change projects should address not only the infrastructural issues of transformation, but also the development of new urban branding based on recreating a memory of the place. Thus, in the case of Raval, the urban and cultural planning led by the local government and the development of cultural institutions took place as part of the construction and revitalization of the identity of the neighborhood from that of a barrio chino red-light district stigma to one of a new cultural quarter. Italy's policies for the protection of historical cities in the 1960s and early 1970s met with great praise from European countries and institutions at the time of their implementation. In the following decades, they became a model for architects and planners worldwide and particularly for large international organizations. This article focuses on the international dissemination of Leonardo Benevolo's work during the 1970s, identifying three defining moments: the 1976 UN Habitat Conference, the meetings organized in the framework of the 1975 European Year of Architectural Heritage, and, notably, the consulting work for UNDP/UNESCO carried out in Latin America by Benevolo and his younger colleague, Giorgio Lombardi. In this context, one specific facet of Benevolo's approach emerges: the idea that preserving historic districts constitutes an integral component of the modern city development. The article provides insights into how Benevolo's approach to the preservation of historical centres was received, manipulated, and used by international agencies, local experts, and institutions in Latin America. With the application and popularization of big data technology, it is more advantageous than traditional urban planning to use big data multimedia technology to reasonably plan the historical blocks of the city. The protection and renewal of historical and cultural blocks have become the core elements to improve the quality of urban development and promote the development of "people-oriented" new urbanization. We analyze and study the planning methods of urban historical blocks under the big data technology. This paper analyzes the different values of historical blocks. By comparing the division effect and business operation mode of historical blocks under different technological environments, it is concluded that the efficiency of traditional data survey and statistical mode is faster than that of big data multimedia technology, and it is more accurate and efficient in analyzing and studying the commercial market and tourism development planning of historical blocks. Through big data multimedia technology data query, we have mastered the cultural connotation of the historical district, protected the historical environment, excavated the historical culture, activated the vitality of the district, and optimized the district environment. This paper analyzes how the City of Montréal employed tools of urban planning—including a district plan, street redesign, rezoning, selective public consultation, expropriation, policing and surveillance—to spatially banish sex work from its historic district, using the red light symbol as a branding strategy. This coincided with a change in federal law (Bill C-36) and a policy shift to reposition sex workers as passive victims of sex trafficking. Using a case study design, this work explores the state's refusal to recognize the agency of those engaged in embodied socio-economic exchanges and the safety and solidarity possible in public space. In interviews, sex workers described strategies of collective organizing, resistance and protest to hold the city accountable during this process of displacement. Mediterranean cities are the oldest in Europe, built according to the practices and worldviews of their times. City cores are densely settled, having developed spontaneously with almost no systematic planning. The result is a core that lacks open spaces for greenery. The goal of the present study is to compare the existing state of residential greenery and urban parks in the Mediterranean with cities in Northern Europe that include such spaces. To achieve that goal, existing greenery per capita (residential greenery and urban parks) data for selected Mediterranean cities were gathered based on Google Earth. Results are compared with greenery per capita in selected cities in Northern Europe. Additional aspects of urban green spaces, such as landscaping and urban park design, are identified and compared to Mediterranean city cores. A historic district is a historic and cultural conservation area that reflects traditional aspects from the past. A sense of memorable pathway allows pedestrian to experience the city happily and attract touristic activity in urban historic districts. The characteristics of touristic districts which facilitate pedestrian movement help in determining the optimum track. The aim of the research is to create an agent-based model (ABM) to simulate the activity of pedestrians in historic districts in order to way find the best touristic paths. Using Space-Syntax, a simulation of the interaction of tourists with the attraction points in old districts pathway will be made in two different case studies located on North Lebanon. A comparison will be made between the simulation model results and field observation. Findings show that the results of the simulation are different than the real environment. The importance of the research is based on developing a framework that helps urban designers and individuals that are concerned with tourism to find the best factors that can affect tourist way-finding and thus being able to develop these districts. Concerning the complexity and diversity of demands in historic and cultural districts, the protection and regeneration planning (PRP) practice has been gradually shifted from spatial design to pluralistic and participatory community governance. Previous studies have pointed out that community trust is an essential means to eliminate social resistance and improve community cohesion and executive capability. However, the trustbuilding mechanism has been given little attention in urban planning. This study intends to improve the theoretical cognition of trust in community governance and provide suggestions for addressing issues of protection and regeneration planning in historic and cultural districts. With Shijia Hutong in Dongcheng District of Beijing, as an empirical case, this paper conducts a household survey and applies the Structural Equation Model (SEM) to explore the influencing elements and community trust-building path in the protection and regeneration planning from the perspective of residents. Through analyzing the influencing mechanism of residents' perception, it reveals that, firstly, pluralistic governance that is composed of the grass-roots government, NGOs, and residents can directly promote residents' perception of the protection and regeneration planning, and have a greater influence by facilitating public participation in building up community trust. Secondly, residents' perception of the protection and regeneration planning would not be improved if public participation failed to build up community trust. Thirdly, community trust consists of neighborhood trust and leadership trust, of which the latter is more important. These findings contribute a new perspective and solution to urban regeneration and heritage protection in the future. The article focuses on the new concept of 'ambiente urbano', as emerged at the turn of the last century in Venice. Painters, photographers, and writers contributed to the elaboration of this concept, partly reflected into the new term 'Venezia minore'. Born out of the conflict initiated in 1885, due to urban modernization projects, these notions were initially based on spatial identity and focused on the less known corners of the city, fostering their conservation. Following 1910, however, architects start applying these concepts to the field of urban design, as shown in the social housing settlement of Sant' Elena, in the city's periphery. In the 1940s, there was an attempt to mirror the old into the new, by recreating urban patterns, presumably typical of the old city of Venice. It was until the publication in 1948 of the book Venezia minore analysing in terms of morphology the urban context, that this story was fully elaborated. Highlighting unknown fragments of Venetian contemporary urban history and integrating them to the planning history of the city, this article overcomes the usual antithetical reading of conservation against sanitary planning, throwing light to the Italian concept of ambiente and tracing its history up to the 60s. The most recent approaches to historic centers propose the need to understand these sectors by incorporating the concept of historic urban landscapes. This term proposes an integral perception of the city and its surroundings, its historical physical-environmental, sociocultural and economic processes; in addition, it encourages the incorporation of contemporary architecture, respecting the inherited urban landscape, its landscape environment and sustainable urban development. In this context, the present study confronts the Management Plan for the Historic District of Buenos Aires (2015) -as a planning instrument- with the Methodology for the valuation, intervention and management of historic urban landscapes -as an academic instrument-. The objective is to put forward suggestions that can be applied to the Management Plan, and thus have a normative instrument that incorporates the notion of historic urban landscapes. Urban planning is important in terms of the continuity of the historical features of the cities as well as fulfilling the living requirements of the age. Safranbolu is a world heritage city with its cultural values. The aim of this study is to protect and preserve the universal historical and cultural values of the city, to ensure its continuity by integrating its natural and cultural features together, to increase the quality life of the city for daily use and touristic uses. In the study, a conservation-usage planning was proposed for the Safranbolu Old Bazaar City and its surroundings. The urban planning proposal was made by taking the opinions of the public with the survey as well as on-site observation and field studies. ArcGIS 10.2 and Photoshop CS6 software were used for field analysis and preparation of layouts.
