The behavior and fate of PFOS (perfluorooctanesulfonate) in the aquatic environment have received great attention due to its high toxicity and persistence. The nanoscale supramolecular mechanisms of interaction between PFOS and ubiquitous EPS (exopolymers) remain unclear though EPS have been widely-known to influence the bioavailability of PFOS. Typically, the exposure patterns of PFOS in aquatic animals changed with the EPS-PFOS interaction are not fully understood. This study hypothesized that PFOS exposure and accumulation pathways depended on the PFOS-EPS interactive assembly behavior and animal species. Two model animals, zebrafish and chironomid larvae, with different feeding habitats were chosen for the exposure and accumulation tests at the environmental concentrations of PFOS in the absence and presence of EPS. It was found that PFOS triggered the self-assembly of EPS to form large aggregates which significantly trapped PFOS. PFOS accumulation was significantly promoted in zebrafish but drastically reduced in chironomid larvae because of the nanoscale interactive assembly between EPS and PFOS. The decreased dermal uptake but increased oral uptake of PFOS by zebrafish with large mouthpart size could be ascribed to the increased ingestion of PFOS-enriched EPS aggregates as food. For the chironomid larvae with small mouthpart size, the PFOS-EPS assemblies reduced the dermal, oral and intestinal uptake of PFOS. The nano-visualization evidences confirmed that the PFOS-enriched EPS-PFOS assemblies blocked PFOS penetration through skin of both animals. Light-stabilizing additives may contribute to the overall pollution load of microplastics (MPs) and potentially enter the food chain, severely threatening aquatic life and human health. This study investigated the variation between polystyrene (PS) MPs and phthalocyanine blue (CuPC)-containing MPs before and after photoaging, as well as their effects on Microcystis aeruginosa. The presence of PS-MPs increased cell mortality, antioxidant enzyme activity, and the variation in extracellular components, while the presence of CuPC exacerbated these variations. CuPC-containing MPs caused different increasing trends in superoxide dismutase and malondialdehyde activities due to electron transfer across the membrane. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the MPs and CuPC affected various cellular processes, with the greatest impact being on cell membranes. Compared with MPs, CuPC negatively affected ribosome and polysaccharide formation. Photodemethylation is the major pathway of methylmercury (MeHg) demethylation in surface water before uptake by the food chain, whose mechanisms and influence factors are still not completely understood. Here, we review the current knowledge on photodemethylation of MeHg and divide MeHg photolysis into three pathways: (1) direct photodemethylation, (2) free radical attack, and (3) intramolecular electron or energy transfer. In aquatic environments, dissolved organic matter is involved into all above pathways, and due to its complex compositions, properties and concentrations, DOM poses multiple functions during the PD of MeHg. DOM-MeHg complex (mainly by sulfur-containing molecules) might weaken the C-Hg bond and enhance PD through both direct and indirect pathways. In special, synergistic effects of both strong binding sites and chromophoric moieties in DOM might lead to intramolecular electron or energy transfer. Moreover, DOM might play a role of radical scavenger; while triplet state DOM, which is generated by chromophoric DOM under light, might become a source of free radicals. Apart from DOMs, transition metals, halides, NO 3 - , NO 2 - , and carbonates also act as radical initialaters or scavengers, and significantly pose effects on radical demethylation, which is generally mediated by hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen. Environmental factors such as pH, light wavelength, light intensity, dissolved oxygen, salinity, and suspended particles also affect the PD of MeHg. Bone char is a functional material obtained by calcining animal bones and is widely used for environmental remediation. In this work, iron was inserted into porcine bone-derived bone char via ion exchange to synthesize iron-doped bone char (Fe-BC) for efficient catalysis of hydrogen peroxide. This is the first time that Fe-BC has been used as a catalyst for the activation of H 2 O 2 . The effectiveness of the Fe-BC catalyst was influenced by the annealing temperature and the amount of iron doping. The results showed that the activation of H 2 O 2 by the Fe-BC catalyst with the best catalytic performance could achieve 97.6% of APAP degradation within 30 min. Insights from electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), free radical scavenging experiments and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) proposed a reaction mechanism based on free radicals dominated degradation pathways (OH and O 2 - ). Iron served as the primary active site in Fe-BC, with defect sites and oxygen-containing groups in the catalyst also contributing to the removal of pollutants. The Fe-BC/H 2 O 2 system demonstrated resilience to interference from common anions (Cl - , NO 3 - , SO 4 2- and HCO 3 - ) in water, but was less effective against humic acid (HA). Based on the detection of intermediates produced during APAP degradation, possible degradation pathways of APAP were proposed and the toxicity of intermediates was evaluated. Exploring disinfection byproducts (DBPs) with adverse health effects in drinking water is a constant challenge. Halobenzamides (HBZAMs) are suspected to be a new group of nitrogenous DBPs but have not been reported in drinking water to date. In this study, by coupling SPE and UPLC‒MS/MS, a sensitive method was established to detect eight HBZAMs in drinking water with recoveries and limits of detection of 80-103% and 0.01-0.04 ng/L, respectively. Subsequently, distinct fragments of HBZAMs were extended to the development of a pseudotargeted method for the analysis of the fourteen HBZAMs that were speculated and lack chemical standards. Using the developed method, eight HBZAMs were quantified in ten drinking water samples with concentrations ranging from 2.4 to 7.2 ng/L and a detection frequency of 100%, among which five HBZAMs were stable with half-lives over 72 h under real chlorine levels. Twelve HBZAMs without standards were identified in three to ten drinking water samples with comparable levels. The cytotoxicity of eight quantified HBZAMs in CHO-K1 cells varied with disparity, in which the cytotoxicity of 3,5-DBBZAM was over 10-fold higher than that of aliphatic dichloroacetamide. Microplastics (MPs) exposed to the urban coastal seawater could form biofilms, which facilitate the adsorption and transportation of hazardous contaminants. However, influence of biofilms on the metal adsorption of MPs, especially the co-existence of biofilm and metals on MPs, is still less known. In this study, the adsorption of copper (Cu) on biofilm-coated MPs (BMPs) was visually analyzed and quantified. The results of scanning electron microscopy in combination with energy dispersive X-ray showed that biofilm and metals co-occurred on MPs in seawater. The nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry images further exhibited that the distribution of Cu, chlorine (Cl) and biofilm on MP surfaces was highly consistent. Moreover, the adsorption of Cu(II) on BMPs was enhanced as quantified by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer. Furthermore, different species on BMPs with and without Cu were identified, and their potential functions of metal or Cl metabolism were predicted based on KEGG pathway database. Microplastics (MPs), an emerging pollutant, are of global concern due to their wide distribution and large quantities. In addition to MPs themselves, various additives within MPs (such as plasticizers, flame retardants, antioxidants and heavy metals) may also have harmful effects on the environment. Most of these additives are physically bound to plastics and can therefore be leached from the plastic and released into the environment. Aging of MPs in the actual environment can affect the migration and release of additives, further increasing the ecotoxicological risk of additives to organisms. This work reviews the functions of several commonly used additives in MPs, and summarizes the representative characterization methods. Furthermore, the migration and leaching of additives in the human environment and marine environment are outlined. As aging promotes the internal chain breaking of MPs and the increase of specific surface area, it in turn stimulates the release of additives. The hazards of additive exposure have been elucidated, and various studies from the laboratory have shown that more toxic additives such as phthalates and brominated flame retardants can disrupt a variety of biological processes in organisms, including metabolism, skeletal development and so on. Increase of MPs ecological risk caused by the leaching of toxic additives is discussed, especially under the effect of aging. Environmental behavior and ecotoxicity of microplastics (MPs) are significantly influenced by the omnipresent self-assembly of microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on them. However, mechanisms of EPS self-assembly onto MPs at nanoscale resolution and effects of aging are unclear. For the first time, temporospatial nano-heterogeneity of self-assembly of EPS onto fresh and one-year aged polypropylene (PP) MPs were investigated by atomic-force-microscopy-infrared-spectroscopy (AFM-IR). Natural aging caused high degree nanoscale fragmentation of MPs physically and chemically. Self-assembly of EPS on MPs was aging-dependent. Polysaccharides were assembled on MP surface faster than proteins. Initially, regardless of the fresh or aged MPs, polysaccharides and proteins, with the former being predominant, were successively and separately assembled to different nanospaces because of their competition for binding sites. More and more proteins and polysaccharides were superimposed on each other with assembly time due to intermolecular forces. The nanochemical textural analysis showed that the nano-heterogeneity of EPS assembly to MPs was clearly correlated with the aging-induced nanochemical and nanomechanical heterogeneity of MP surface. A novel catalyst-functionalized microbubble system was developed to trigger both of the Fenton reaction and the flotation separation on the gas-liquid interface of bubbles for efficiently removing the recalcitrant organic pollutants from waters. The Fe(II)-functionalized colloidal microbubbles (FCMBs) were featured as large specific surface area, great bubble density and high ·OH activation capacity. Approximately 98.2% and 93.1% of the triphenylmethane and aromatic azo pollutants were removed within 0.5 min, respectively. Particularly, at the lowest Fe(II) dose of 0.2 mmol/L, the FCMB-triggered Fenton still achieved 7.4-20.6% higher removal than the traditional Fenton method at 0.5 min. In addition to the Fenton oxidative degradation mechanism, the FCMBs themselves were able to capture and remove 20.1-36.8% of pollutants from water. Thus, FCMBs served as micro-reactors in terms of: (i) the target molecules and intermediates were adhered and separated by FCMBs; and (ii) the FCMBs enhanced the mass transfer of catalyst and exposed sufficient active sites on the bubble surface for catalytic oxidation reaction. Compared with the traditional Fenton, the present method showed the robust tolerance of pH (4.0-9.5) and salinity (up to 40‰) at decreased Fe(II) doses, and the bio-toxicity of intermediates was obviously lower. As an emerging pollutant, microplastics (MPs) may interact with dissolved organic matter (DOM) which is prevalent in the aqueous environment. Meanwhile, the aging of MPs in the actual environment increases the uncertainty of their environmental fate. Here, the interaction mechanisms between pristine and aged polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs) and humic acid (HA) at pH 7.0 were explored. Microstructural changes of HA were examined by fluorescence and Fourier transformation infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Atomic force microscopy coupled with infrared (AFM-IR) and micro-Raman techniques were used to characterize and analyze the interacted PP-MPs. The addition of HA increased the surface roughness of both pristine and aged PP-MPs. Results of AFM-IR and Raman spectra showed that the interaction of PP-MPs with HA accelerated their surface oxidation and enhanced the characteristic signals. XPS spectra showed that the oxygen content ratio of pristine and aged PP-MPs increased by 0.95% and 1.48% after the addition of HA, respectively. PP-MPs after aging interacted more strongly with HA and there was a higher affinity between them. Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) combined with FT-IR spectra further elucidated the interaction mechanism at the molecular level. Sediments are considered to be important sinks of microplastics, but the enrichment process of microplastics by blue carbon ecosystems is poorly studied. This study analyzed the spatial distribution and temporal changes, assessed the polymer types and morphological characteristics of microplastics in sediments of five ecosystems, i.e. forests, paddy fields, mangroves, saltmarshes and bare beaches on Ximen Island, Yueqing Bay, China. The trapping effect of blue carbon (mangrove and saltmarsh) sediments on microplastic was further explored. Temporal trends in microplastic abundance showed a significant increase over the last 20 years, with the enrichment of microplastics in mangrove and saltmarsh sediments being 1.7 times as high as that in bare beach, exhibiting blue carbon vegetations have strong enrichment effect on microplastics. The dominant color, shape, size, and polymer type of microplastics in sediments were transparent, fibers and fragments, <1 mm, and polyethylene, respectively. Significant differences in the abundance and characteristics of microplastics between intertidal sediments and terrestrial soils reveal that runoff input is the main source of microplastics. The different types of microplastics (MPs), including debris, fibers, particles, foams, films and others, have become a global environmental problem. However, there is still a lack of research and understanding of the pollution characteristics and main causes of MPs in the arid region of Xinjiang, China. In this survey, we focused on the occurrence and distribution of MPs in urban, farmland and desert areas along a highway in the survey area. Our results showed that the main types of MPs were polypropylene (PP) flakes, polyethylene (PE) films and both PE and PP fragments and fibers. The abundance levels of MPs in street dust of Korla, Alar and Hotan districts equaled 804, 307 and 1526 particles kg−1, respectively, and were positively correlated with the urban population. In farmland areas, there were only two types of MPs (films and fibers), of which the film particles dominated and accounted for 91% of the total on the average. The highest abundance rate of MPs reached 7292 particles kg−1 in the desert area along the highway. The minimum microplastic particle sizes were 51.8 ± 2.2 μm in urban street dust samples, 54.2 ± 5.3 μm in farmland soil samples and 67.8 ± 8.4 μm in samples from along the desert highway. Particle sizes < 500 μm were most common and accounted for 48−91% of the total in our survey. The abundance and shape distribution of the MPs were closely related to the different types of human activities.

Microplastics (MPs) pervade the environment and increasingly threaten both natural ecosystems and human health. In this study, we investigated MP particle concentrations in sediment samples collected from 54 sites along the banks of the Yangtze River and its major tributaries and on lakeshores. The main polymer types found in the samples were polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE). MP particle abundance in the various types of locations was 35-51,968 particles/kg dry weight (d.w.) on the banks of the main river, 52-1463 particles/kg (d.w.) on the banks of tributaries and 2574-23,685 particles/kg (d.w.) on lakeshores. Correlation between MP abundance and mean annual runoff of each upstream tributary was significant, which suggests that increased runoff brings more microplastic waste to streambank sediments. The most common shape of MP particles in all upstream samples was flake, and in downstream samples it was foam. Small microplastic particles (< 0.50 mm) were predominant at all sites in this study, and the minimum particle size in samples from the Yangtze river banks was 0.065 mm. Average abundance of MP particles on the shores of the source lake was 9069 particles/kg around the inlet but only 866 particles/kg around the outlet; the difference was due to interception associated with sedimentation and precipitation in the lake. Our study represents the large-scale study of MPs contamination in sediment along the Yangtze River and provides important data regarding the accumulation and distribution of MPs in shoreline sediments of the upper, middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, main tributaries and lakes in China., (© 2022. Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in freshwater ecosystems, including inland small waterbodies (e.g., ponds and ditches), which are unique habitats for tadpoles. The uptake of MPs by tadpoles is influenced by their habitat, life stage, and feeding strategy. In this study, we investigated MP levels in small waterbodies in three different functional zones from the Hangzhou Great Bay Area, China, and resident tadpoles at different stages of metamorphosis with different feeding habits. Our results indicated that MPs in all three sampling areas were predominantly fibers; and the highest abundances of MPs were observed in water (4.70 ± 2.30 items/L) and sediment (728 ± 324 items/kg) from a textile industrial area, likely the result of nearby human activities. There was no significant difference in MP number in tadpoles between areas; however, omnivorous tadpoles with labial teeth and horny beaks ingested more MPs than did filter feeders. Based on their developmental characteristics, the collected tadpoles were categorized as: pre-metamorphosis, pro-metamorphosis, and metamorphic climax. The MP levels exhibited an upward trend, and MP size gradually increased as tadpole development progressed. Microplastics (MPs, < 5 mm) in the environment have attracted worldwide attention due to their wide distribution and difficulty in handling. Aging processes such as UV irradiation, biodegradation, physical abrasion and chemical oxidation can affect the environmental behavior of MPs. This review article summarizes different aging processes of MPs and subsequent effects on the adsorption of pollutants, the leaching of additives, and the toxicity of MPs. In addition, the formation process of biofilm on the surface of MPs and the interactions between biofilm and aged MPs are revealed. MPs can accumulate different environmental pollutants (organic pollutants, heavy metals, microorganisms, etc.) through surface adsorption, pore filling and distribution. Moreover, the aging of MPs affects their adsorption performance toward these pollutants due to a series of changes in their specific surface area and oxygen-containing functional groups. The release of some toxic additives such as phthalates after aging can enhance the toxic effects of MPs. Aging also changes the shape and size of MPs, which can affect the eating habits of the organisms and further increase the potential toxicity of MPs. This article conducts a systematical analysis and summary of the environmental behavior and physicochemical properties of MPs as well as the changes due to MPs aging, which helps to better understand the impact of aging on MPs in the environment. Uranium (U) is a highly toxic radioactive element and limited to < 30 μg/L in drinking water by the World Health Organization. In this study, the concentration, distribution, possible source, and correlation with other elements of U were investigated in river sediments of the Ili River Basin. Metal contamination factors (CFs) and geoaccumulation index (I geo ) were calculated, and both of them indicated that U in the survey region was unpolluted, slightly polluted, or moderately polluted (its concentration was ranged from 1.37 to 5.99 mg/kg). Notably, U pollution in the tributaries near the Wusun Mountain was evidently higher than those in the main streams of the Ili River and the Tekes River. Principal component analysis (PCA), cluster analysis (CA), and correlation analysis revealed that U was significantly positively correlated with Pb, and both of them might have originated from the dense coal mines in the areas of the Wusun Mountain. Sediment U in the main streams of the rivers was unpolluted or slightly polluted, which might be strongly influenced by the U contamination in their upstream tributaries. The results from this work showed that the source control of the coal-derived U pollution near the Wusun Mountain was critical to protect the aquatic environment in the Ili River Basin.

Intentional or incidental thermal changes inevitably occur during the lifecycle of plastics. High temperatures accelerate the aging of plastics and promote their fragmentation to microplastics (MPs). However, there is little information available on the release of MPs after fires. In this study, an atomic force microscope combined with nanoscale infrared analysis was used to demonstrate the physicochemical properties of polypropylene (PP) plastics under simulated fire scenarios. Results showed that the chemical composition and relative stiffness of heat-treated plastic surfaces changed, significantly enhancing the generation of MPs under external forces; over (2.1 ± 0.2) × 10 5 items/kg abundance of MPs released from PP which were burned at 250 °C in air and trampled by a person. The leaching of antimony (Sb) from MPs in different solutions first increased and then decreased with increasing temperature, reaching a maximum at 250 °C. Higher concentrations of humic acid (10 vs 1 mg/L) caused a greater release of Sb. Furthermore, the tap water leachates of PP burned at 250 °C had the greatest effect on the growth and photosynthetic activity of Microcystis aeruginosa. Nowadays, sanitary landfilling is the most common approach to eliminate municipal solid waste, but a major drawback is the generation of heavily polluted leachates. These leachates must be appropriately treated before being discharged into the environment. Generally, the leachate characteristics such as COD, BOD/COD ratio, and landfill age are necessary determinants for selection of suitable treatment technologies. Rapid, sensitive and cost-effective bioassays are required to evaluate the toxicity of leachate before and after the treatment. This review summarizes extensive studies on leachate treatment methods and leachate toxicity assessment. It is found that individual biological or physical-chemical treatment is unable to meet strict effluent guidelines, whereas a combination of biological and physical-chemical treatments can achieve satisfactory removal efficiencies of both COD and ammonia nitrogen. In order to assess the toxic effects of leachate on different trophic organisms, we need to develop an appropriate matrix of bioassays based on their sensitivity to various toxicants and a multispecies approach using organisms representing different trophic levels. Manganese-oxidizing aerobic granular sludge (Mn-AGS) is a novel extension of AGS technology to treat arsenic (As) in organic wastewater. In this study, Mn-AGS was first applied to treat real wastewater (bottom ash leachates) containing high levels of As(III) and Cu(II) in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for 91 days. Influent and effluent As(III), As(V), Cu(II), as well as pH and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were monitored daily, and sludge was collected regularly for morphological observation, chemical characterization, and microbial analysis. The results indicated that As(III) and Cu(II) could be efficiently removed from wastewater (∼83% and ∼100%, respectively), but the performance was sensitive to pH variation, especially for As(III). The removed As and Cu were mostly bound to carbonates (60.2 ± 2.0% and 70.0 ± 0.6%, respectively) and Fe/Mn oxides (28.2 ± 1.6% and 14.6 ± 0.5%, respectively) in the final sludge. Influent As(III) was partially oxidized into As(V), and high fractions of As(V) were obtained in the Fe/Mn oxide-bound phase. Unexpectedly, microbial analysis revealed that community richness was only slightly changed when the influent was acidized (pH 4.0) but greatly reduced after the influent pH back to 6.0. It could be explained by that acid-fast bacteria rapidly grew after pH recovery and eliminated non-acid-fast bacteria. The hydrophobic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are apt to adhere tightly to the sediments in aquifer and thus pose great threats to the aquatic environment of groundwater and surface water as well as human health. The present study constructed functionalized microbubbles, named colloidal ozone aphrons (COAs), by dissolving ozone-contained air into the nonionic surfactant (Tween-20) solution at the pressure of 300 kPa for the in situ remediation of phenanthrene (PHE)-contaminated sediments. The COA system aimed at improving the PHE elimination in terms of (i) enhancing the migration and transportation ability of the bubble system in the contaminated aquifer matrix, (ii) accurately desorbing the target hydrophobic contaminants from sediments, and (iii) reinforcing the in situ oxidation degradation immediately after or simultaneously when the PAHs are desorbed into the aqueous phase. Experimental results demonstrated that the COAs exhibited similar characteristics as the classical colloidal gas aphrons (CGAs), including the high stability (half-life time > 200 s), typical morphology and average bubble size (114-162 μm); higher air hold-up of COAs was achieved (i. e. > 20%) compared with the air-microbubbles (1-2%) obtained under the same generation conditions. Although the encapsulated ozone could oxidize the surfactant-layers, the properties and behaviors of COAs were not greatly affected. The surfactant multi-layers endowed the COAs with strong hydrophobic attraction with PHE, great migration capacity and enlarged oxidation area in the sediment matrix. Approximately 96.9% of PHE was removed from the sediments and 84.9% of the overall PHE was oxidized at the high ozone concentration of 0.6 mg/L when the initial PHE concentration was 240.0 μg/kg. The COA-involved remediation technology provided the insight of combining the processes of washing and oxidizing through adopting the particularly conceived microbubbles. Chemical additives leaching from microplastics and their effects on physiology of microalgae are of environmental significance. So far, these issues remain unclear. Here, the leaching behavior of fluorescent additives from polyurethane sponge microplastics in simulated (acidic, saline, and basic water) and natural waters (river, lake, wetland, and sea water) was investigated. Release amount of additives increased with increasing solution pH and leaching time. The maximum release amount was reached at the leaching time of 12-24 h and the 3,3'-diaminobenzidine-like substances were identified in the leachate. The leached concentrations of fluorescent additives in simulated and natural waters followed the order of basic water > saline water > seawater > West Lake > River > Wetland. Effects of leachate and microplastics on growth and photosynthesis of Chlorella vulgaris were further evaluated. The maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II (F v /F m ) decreased with increasing leachate concentrations. Only high content (1.6 g L -1 ) of microplastics exerted significant inhibitory influence on cell photosynthesis when microalgae were exposed to microplastics alone. Retention of algal cells inside the porous sponge microplastics did not change their photosynthetic efficiency. Sertraline hydrochloride (Ser-HCl), a widely used antidepressant, becomes an aquatic contaminant via metabolic excretion and improper disposal; however, it is unknown how Ser-HCl affects aquatic microbial communities. The present study investigated the effects of Ser on the structures of aquatic microbial communities via high-throughput sequencing analyses. Ser-HCl treatment inhibited the growth of two model algae (the green alga, Chlorella vulgaris, and the cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa) and decreased the chlorophyll a (Chl-a) concentration in the microcosm to reduce the photosynthetic efficiency. High-throughput sequencing analyses showed that exposure to Ser-HCl disturbed the balance of cyanobacteria species by stimulating the growth of specific cyanobacteria. Among eukaryotes, the richness as well as the diversity indices were significantly enhanced after 5 days of Ser-HCl treatment but sharply decreased with exposure time. Nucleariida occupied an absolute majority (97.83%) within the eukaryotes, implicating that Ser-HCl disturbed the ecological equilibrium in microcosms. Ser-HCl will continue to be an environmental contaminant due to its wide usage and production. Our current study clarified the potential ecological risk of Ser-HCl to aquatic microorganisms. The ability to restore tissue function and morphology after injury is a key advantage of many fish for a greater chance of survival. The tissue regeneration process is regulated by multiple pathways, and it can therefore be hypothesized that environmental contaminants targeting components of these signaling pathways, may disrupt the fish's capability to repair or regenerate. This could lead to higher mortality and eventually even to a decline in populations. In this study, the effects of 17α‑ethinylestradiol (EE2), a synthetic estrogen, were assessed on the regenerative capacity of larval zebrafish. Zebrafish aged 2 hour post fertilization (hpf) were exposed to 1, 10, or 100 ng/L EE2, and the caudal fins were amputated at 72 hpf. It was found that EE2 exposure significantly inhibited fin regeneration and changed locomotor behavior. The transcription levels for most of the genes involved in the signaling networks regulating the fin regeneration, such as axin2, fgfr1, bmp2b and igf2b, were down-regulated in the amputated fish in response to EE2 exposure, which was in contrast to their increased patterns in the vehicle-exposed control fish. Additionally, the mRNA levels of several immune-related genes, such as il-1β, il-6, il-10 and nf-κb2, were significantly decreased after EE2 exposure, accompanied by a lower density of neutrophils migrated into the wound site. In conclusion, the present study indicated for the first time that estrogenic endocrine disrupting chemicals (EEDCs) could inhibit the regenerative capacity of zebrafish, and this effect was speculated to be mediated through the alteration in regeneration-related signaling pathways and immune competence. This work expands our knowledge of the potential effects of EEDCs on injured aquatic organisms, and highlights the ecotoxicological significance of relationships between regenerative process and endocrine system. Waste plastics can be degraded to nanoplastics (NPs, diameter<1 μm) by natural forces. NPs not only directly affect aquatic organisms but also adsorb other pollutants, causing combined pollution. Glyphosate is one of the most widely used herbicides and is commonly monitored in freshwater systems. In this study, the effects of the combined toxicity of polystyrene cationic amino-modified nanoparticles (nPS-NH 2 ) and glyphosate on a blue-green alga, Microcystis aeruginosa, were investigated. Our results demonstrated that 5 mg/L glyphosate had a strong inhibitory effect on M. aeruginosa (the 96-h inhibitory rate was 27%), while 5 mg/L nPS-NH 2 had no apparent effect on the growth of M. aeruginosa. Interestingly, nPS-NH 2 combined with glyphosate showed antagonistic effects on the inhibition of algal growth because nPS-NH 2 displayed a strong adsorption capacity for glyphosate, which significantly alleviated the inhibitory effect of glyphosate on M. aeruginosa growth. However, the presence of glyphosate enhanced the stability of the dispersion system, which allowed more nPS-NH 2 to adsorb on the surface of M. aeruginosa and may result in greater enrichment of nPS-NH 2 in the food chain to show potential repercussions to human life. Linoleic acid (LA), is the product of secondary metabolism secreted from Microcystis aeruginosa, and it exhibits allelopathic activity against eukaryotic algae. However, information about on the mechanisms associated with the inhibition of algal activity by LA is limited. In this study, Chlorella pyrenoidosa was treated with LA (20-120 μg L -1 ) for 4 days, and its growth inhibition and physiological responses were examined for potential toxic mechanisms. The photosynthetic efficiency of C. pyrenoidosa was inhibited by LA treatments, and the F v /F m parameter decreased significantly compared to that of controls; however, the photosynthetic pigment content did not change significantly. Peroxidase activity was enhanced, relieving oxidative damage in algae after LA treatments. However, superoxide dismutase and catalase were suppressed, ultimately leading to the aggravation of lipid peroxidation. Transcriptome-based gene expression analysis revealed that the 120 μg L -1 LA treatment significantly inhibited the transcription of genes related to photosynthesis, carbon metabolism, and amino acid metabolism in C. pyrenoidosa, suggesting that these genes might be key LA targets in C. pyrenoidosa. Moreover, the expression of genes involved in vitamin, lipid, nitrogen cycling, terpenoid, and ascorbate metabolism was also affected, suggesting that LA inhibits algal cell growth through multiple pathways. Mercury contamination is a global concern because of its high toxicity, persistence, bioaccumulative nature, long distance transport and wide distribution in the environment. In this study, the efficiency and multiple-pathway remediation mechanisms of Hg 2+ by a selenite reducing Escherichia coli was assessed. E. coli can reduce Hg 2+ to Hg + and Hg 0 and selenite to selenide at the same time. This makes a multiple-pathway mechanisms for removal of Hg 2+ from water in addition to biosorption. It was found that when the original Hg 2+ concentration was 40μgL -1 , 93.2±2.8% of Hg 2+ was removed from solution by E. coli. Of the total Hg removed, it was found that 3.3±0.1% was adsorbed to the bacterium, 2.0±0.5% was bioaccumulated, and 7.3±0.6% was volatilized into the ambient environment, and most (80.6±5.7%) Hg was removed as HgSe and HgCl precipitates and Hg 0 . On one hand, selenite is reduced to selenide and the latter further reacts with Hg 2+ to form HgSe precipitates. On the other hand Hg 2+ is successively reduced to Hg + , which forms solid HgCl, and Hg 0 . This is the report on bacterially transformation of Hg 2+ to HgSe, HgCl and Hg 0 via multiple pathways. It is suggested that E. coli or other selenite reducing microorganisms are promising candidates for mercury bioremediation of contaminated wastewaters, as well as simultaneous removal of Hg 2+ and selenite., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Catechol, nitrite, and dissolved metals are ubiquitous in source drinking water. Catechol and nitrite have been identified as precursors for halonitromethanes (HNMs), but the effect of metal ions on HNM formation during chlorination remains unclear. The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of metal ions (Fe, Ti, Al) on the formation of trichloronitromethane (TCNM) (the most representative HNM species in disinfected water) on chlorinating catechol and nitrite. Trichloronitromethane was extracted by methyl tert-butyl ether and detected by gas chromatography. The results show that metal ions promoted the formation of TCNM and that the enhancement efficiency followed the order of Fe > Ti > Al. Trichloronitromethane formation increased greatly within 2 h, and a basic condition (pH 8-9) favored TCNM formation more than acidic or neutral conditions. The conjoint effect of the metal-ion mixtures was shown to be similar to that of the single metal ion having the highest promoting effect on TCNM formation. Antimony (Sb(V)) in Sb mine drainage has adverse effects on the receiving water environments. This study for the first time demonstrated the feasibility of using sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) to convert sulfate ions in SMD into sulfides that reduce Sb(V) to Sb(III) and to form complex with Sb(III) as precipitate. The principal compound in the precipitate was stibnite (Sb2S3) at pH 7 and pH 9. The Sb(V) removal mechanism is sulfate-reduction and sulfide oxidization-precipitation, different from the conventional SRB-precipitation processes for heavy metals. Chromium (Cr) is a toxic metal that poses a great threat to aquatic ecosystems. Information is limited on coinstantaneous responses of photosystems I (PSI) and II (PSII) to Cr(VI) stress due to lack of instruments that can simultaneously measure PSI and PSII activities. In the present study, responses of quantum yields of energy conversion and electron transport rates of PSI and PSII in Microcystis aeruginosa cells to Cr(VI) stress were simultaneously analyzed by a DUAL-PAM-100 system. Quantum yield of cyclic electron flow (CEF) under Cr(VI) stress and its physiological role in alleviating toxicity of Cr(VI) were also analyzed. At 5 mg L(-1) Cr(VI), quantum yield and electron transport rate of PSII decreased significantly, and light-induced non-photochemical fluorescence quenching lost. Cr(VI) also inhibited efficiency of PSII to use energy under high light more than of PSI. PSII showed lower maximal electron transport rate and light adaptability than PSI. Electron transport rate of PSI was higher and decreased less than that of PSII, implying less sensitivity of PSI to high light and Cr(VI). Energy dissipation through non-light-induced non-photochemical fluorescence quenching increased with increasing Cr(VI) concentration. CEF was stimulated under Cr(VI) treatment and made a significant contribution to quantum yield and electron transport of PSI, which was essential for protection of PSI from stresses of Cr(VI) and high light., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc. Effects of arsenic on growth, pigments content, oxygen evolution and photosystem II (PSII) activity of Microcystis aeruginosa were investigated in the present study. Various concentrations of As(III) did not show significant effects on growth and total carotenoids content within 24 h of treatment. After 48 h of treatment, 10 mg L(-1) As(III) significantly inhibited the growth and synthesis of carotenoids of M. aeruginosa, while As(III) at concentrations ranging from 0 to 1 mg L(-1) showed no significant inhibition. Chlorophyll a synthesis, oxygen evolution and chlorophyll fluorescence were more sensitive to As(III) exposure than carotenoid synthesis and growth. Chlorophyll a content, fast fluorescence rise transients and fluorescence decay kinetics appeared to be affected after the cells were exposed to 1 and 10 mg L(-1) As(III) for more than 24 h. Treatment with 10 mg L(-1) As(III) for 24 h or longer led to flattening of the fluorescence transient and drastic decrease of amplitude of fast phase of QA- reoxidation kinetics. Exposure to As(III) mainly inhibited the quantum yield for primary photochemistry, density of reaction centers and photosynthesis performance index, and increased the dissipated energy. The decrease in amplitude of the fast and middle phases further revealed that once electron transfer from QA- to QB was inhibited by As(III), more QA- was reoxidized via S2(QAQB)- charge recombination. Antimony (Sb) has received increasing environmental concerns due to its potential toxic and carcinogenic properties. In the present work, the electrocoagulation technique was used to treat the flotation wastewater from a heavy antimony polluted area, and the mechanism of removing Sb was also investigated. The study focused on the effect of operation parameters such as current density, initial pH and standing time on the Sb removal efficiency. Antimony concentration of below 1 mg/L in the treated wastewater was achieved, which meets the emission standards established by State Department of Environmental Protection and State Administration of China for Quality Supervision and Inspection and Quarantine of China.
