Hospital accreditation has become ubiquitous in developing countries. While research acknowledges that accreditation can enhance healthcare quality, efficiency, and safety, concerns persist regarding hospitals' management of conflicts stemming from the diverse institutional logic inherent in this process. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate how professional and market logic, alongside conflicts arising from institutional demands, affect compliance with hospital accreditation. To this end, we conducted a multiple-case study in four Brazilian hospitals employing in-depth interviews and on-site observations. The triangulation of narrative analysis and the outcomes of multiple correspondence analysis revealed that when professional logic predominates, there is a greater propensity to tailor accredited activities by segmenting the tasks between physicians and nurses with the intention of mitigating existing conflicts. Conversely, when conflicts occur over established goals between professionals and orientated marked logic executives, the accreditation process is impeded, resulting in non-compliance. Ultimately, the findings underscore the alignment between the pursuit of legitimacy and efficiency within the accreditation process. Studies have shown that fruits of plants from the Fabaceae family harbour a diverse community of herbivorous insects and their natural enemies. Despite this observation, we still lack information on the specific interactions within these multi‐trophic communities. Herein, we describe the food web of insects associated with fruits and seeds of Leucaena leucocephala (Fabaceae), an invasive plant in Brazil, and their relationship with plant traits including seed biomass.We found 17 species of insects distributed across three trophic levels. The main herbivore species sampled was Acanthoscelides macrophthalmus (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Bruchinae), which was responsible for most of the seed predation and associated with the highest parasitoid biodiversity (N = 10 species). Four other herbivorous species were lower in abundance, including a previously unreported Lepidopteran species with two parasitoids and one hyperparasitoid associated with it.Seeds with more mass promoted an increase in insect abundance, insect species richness, and the number of links and connectivity. We observed two native parasitoid species, Paracrias pluteus and Stenocorse suldamericanos, shift from herbivores on native plants to herbivores on the invasive L. leucocephala, consistent with a potential host shift. However, more investigation is required to ascertain the effects of recent shifts of native insect communities (on native plants) to non‐native ones and their consequences on plant fitness. Our study contributes to the understanding of the dynamics of communities and food webs in unknown systems, specifically in fruits of an invasive plant, and provides information about the influence of different plant traits on these communities. We describe the diverse community of insect herbivores and parasitoids associated with the seeds and fruits of three sympatric Fabaceae species in Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brazil: Inga vera, Senna multijuga and Leucaena leucocephala.A total of 5353 individual insects, representing 77 different species, were identified via morphology and DNA barcoding. The non‐native L. leucocephala had the least diverse natural enemy community (N = 17 species), while two native species, I. vera and S. multijuga, were more diverse (N = 40 and N = 24 species, respectively).Individuals from the insect order Hymenoptera, a group dominated by parasitoid wasps, were the most diverse recovered from our samples in all hosts. Additionally, individual herbivore and parasitoid species were more likely to be found on a single host, with only four out of the 77 species found in more than one plant species.This includes the generalist agricultural pest herbivore, Lasioderma serricorne, found in two species, and three parasitoids connecting native S. multijuga and non‐native L. leucocephala communities, hinting at recent host shifts.Furthermore, different host plant traits had complex effects on the herbivore and parasitoid communities, where seed number per fruit promoted a propagating effect on the abundance and richness at both higher trophic levels, whereas seed and fruit weight did not.We highlight the importance of including parasitoids in insect community studies because they are highly diverse and provide important ecosystem services. The fluctuations in yield and consequently in production occurred due to climatic adversities in the main producing states of Brazil. Farming has changed over time, and past scenarios have shown high exploitation of natural resources focusing on soil tillage and conventional seeding methods. This study aimed to determine the yield performance of soybean grown under 10 consolidated crop succession systems. The experiment was conducted during the 2018/2019 crop season, before the research project entitled "Sustainable production systems with better use of biological and natural resources, with treatments arranged in a randomized block design and four replications". The treatments consisted of the following predecessor crops: Avena sativa, Avena strigosa, Triticum aestivum, Secale cereale, Brassica napus, Raphanus sativus, Avena strigosa + Raphanus sativus + Vicia sativa, Fallow, Avena strigosa + Lolium multiflorum, and Triticum aestivum - Fodder. Soybean was subsequently sown across winter crops. The succession that showed superior yield was Avena strigosa + Lolium multiflorum. This attribute was established by associating taller plants with the maximization of the number of grains per pod, hundredgrain mass, grain mass, and plant dry mass; in contrast, there was a lower emphasis on plant residue. The determining attributes for soybean yield were plant stand, plant height, the number of pods per plant, and total grain mass, with contrasts among groups composed of the succession of Avena sativa, Avena strigosa, Triticum aestivum, Secale cereale, and Brassica napus, distanced from Raphanus sativus, Avena strigosa + Raphanus sativus + Vicia sativa, Fallow, Avena strigosa + Lolium multiflorum, and Triticum aestivum - Fodder. Aims: To describe beginning nursing student learning styles and to determine whether there are relationships between learning style and sociodemographic or educational background. We also aim to compare these data with the normative values of the 3.1 version of the Kolb learning style inventory and verify its reliability. Background/Literature: Learning style is related to the way in which an individual interacts with learning conditions, involving cognitive, affective, physical and environmental aspects. In nursing education, few studies have focused on knowing the learning styles of beginning nursing students, despite the need for students to develop critical thinking skills required of nurses. Design: Descriptive, cross‐sectional, correlational, multi‐site study. Method: The study took place at five universities in Brazil and one university in the United States. Data were collected from a sample of beginning nursing students (n = 176) in 2019, using the Portuguese and English 3.1 versions of Kolb's learning style inventory. Results: Most students' learning styles were classified as divergers (34.10%), while 28.41% were assimilators, 23.86% were accommodators and 13.63% were convergers. Kolb describes learning as a four‐stage cyclical process grounded in experience. The mean score of one learning stage, the concrete experience, showed those who attended public high schools compared with private high schools was higher (mean = 26.22; p =.0019), and there were different results between Brazilian state universities, Brazilian federal universities and the American university (p =.0149). Conclusion: The diverger style was the most common among beginning nursing students in Brazil and the United States. There was a significant relationship between learning style, the educational background of students, the type of institution they attend and their previous experience with some active learning methodologies. Relevance to clinical practice: Aligned with Kolb's experiential learning theory, nurse educators must be aware of student learning styles so they may use teaching strategies to meet their students' needs. A list of amphibian and reptile species that occur in open and forested areas of the Atlantic Forest in the municipality of Cruz das Almas, in the Recôncavo Baiano, eastern Brazil is presented. Field sampling occurred between January 2015 to March 2019, totalling 117 samples distributed in three areas: Parque Florestal Mata de Cazuzinha, Mata da Cascalheira, and Riacho do Machado. A total of 1,848 individuals of 69 species (31 anurans, 14 lizards, 19 snakes, two amphisbaenians, and three testudines) was recorded. Additionally, one individual of Ophiodes striatus was found in Mata da Cascalheira after the end of sampling, totalling 15 lizard species and 70 herpetofaunal species. The prevalence of open-area species and the presence of Phyllopezus lutzae, Diploglossus lessonae, and Dryadosaura nordestina in interior forest patches are discussed. Leaf-cutting ants (genera Atta and Acromyrmex) are defoliation pests of great agronomic importance. Currently, the most effective control method is chemical using granulated baits containing sulfluramid as a standard active ingredient. In this work, a new protocol was proposed for the synthesis of the encapsulates with chitosan, tapioca, citrus pulp and sulfluramid. A sulfluramid is a pesticide which is used extensively in Brazil for management of leaf cutting ants. The main focus of this work is to use a polymeric combination aligned with the active ingredient that allows the formation of an encapsulated which the ants can transport and incorporate to their nests, being an effective methodology for the death of colonies. The encapsulated makes the active ingredient less available to the environment, but maintains the mortality level similar to the used granulated baits. For this reason, it was proposed to develop a chitosan and tapioca encapsulated for the control of leaf-cutting ants.The presence of sulfluramid in the encapsulated was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The behavioral acts related to the transport and the incorporation of leaf disks and encapsulates were observed utilizing A. sexdens colonies. The encapsulates containing sulfluramid have presented a similar intoxication of A. sexdens workers causing mortality in the same proportion as the commercial baits. The protocol for the synthesis of the encapsulates can be utilized with other substances, as entomopathogenic and parasite microorganisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to characterize the fishing, the fishermen and ethno-knowledge related to them of Ponta do Tubarão Sustainable Development State Reserve, Rio Grande do Norte State - Brazil. The local fishing is an artisanal labor that provided to the fishermen over the time a broad knowledge about fishing species and their habitats as well. In the RDSEPT, the fishing environments correspond to the river/estuary, coastal beaches and the open sea. In terms of fishery production, between 2006 and 2016, RDSEPT summed around 9.4 tons of fish. Interviews with local fishermen revealed a little of the socioeconomic profile of the people employed in this activity. Of the total interviews, about 80% claimed to have been fishing for more than 20 years, 48% are married, while 36% are illiterate or semi-illiterate, and only 10% have completed high school. In addition, 72% of the interviewees had a monthly income of up to 1 minimum wage (about 270 dollars). Regarding ethno-knowledge, it is possible to affirm that their maintenance in the RDSEPT is mainly due to the family ties, since 48% of the interviewees declared that they learned the art of fishing with their parents. It is worth mentioning that many fishermen had to learn to fish when they were still children, which implied in the low schooling they have nowadays. Despite this reality, it is perceptible that the ethno-knowledge those men have acquired along their lives, is a valuable instrument to recognize the relation between man and nature, as well as it can be used for the management of natural resources. The Mais Médicos (More Doctors) Program (MMP), which was launched in 2013, sought to provide doctors to work in primary health care in priority areas within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). This article analyzes the perception of MMP service users through the results of a qualitative study that consisted of interviews with service users of the Family Health Strategy (ESF) in which doctors from the MMP worked. The service users who were interviewed had a positive view of the MMP because it had expanded access to health care, although there still remained organizational and technical problems that limited the use of services. The performance of foreign doctors was well viewed, with an emphasis on a humanized relationship between doctor and service user, which was characterized by listening, attention and dialogue. In terms of communication with these professionals, some service users referred to language as being a barrier, which was ameliorated by the use of communication strategies within the ESF. The MMP offered a quick and satisfactory resolution to the historical problem of difficulty of access to doctors in Brazil. However, the effectiveness of the Brazilian health system requires that weaknesses are overcome, such as access to specialized services, organizational problems and the implementation of service production models that are centered on illness. • We analyze the correlation of meteorological and human mobility in Brazilian capitals. • We propose the EEMD-ARIMAX method to predict time series with independent variables. • We introduce an anomaly detection algorithm to adjust the prediction. In 2020, Brazil was the leading country in COVID-19 cases in Latin America, and capital cities were the most severely affected by the outbreak. Climates vary in Brazil due to the territorial extension of the country, its relief, geography, and other factors. Since the most common COVID-19 symptoms are related to the respiratory system, many researchers have studied the correlation between the number of COVID-19 cases with meteorological variables like temperature, humidity, rainfall, etc. Also, due to its high transmission rate, some researchers have analyzed the impact of human mobility on the dynamics of COVID-19 transmission. There is a dearth of literature that considers these two variables when predicting the spread of COVID-19 cases. In this paper, we analyzed the correlation between the number of COVID-19 cases and human mobility, and meteorological data in Brazilian capitals. We found that the correlation between such variables depends on the regions where the cities are located. We employed the variables with a significant correlation with COVID-19 cases to predict the number of COVID-19 infections in all Brazilian capitals and proposed a prediction method combining the Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) method with the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average Exogenous inputs (ARIMAX) method, which we called EEMD-ARIMAX. After analyzing the results poor predictions were further investigated using a signal processing-based anomaly detection method. Computational tests showed that EEMD-ARIMAX achieved a forecast 26.73% better than ARIMAX. Moreover, an improvement of 30.69% in the average root mean squared error (RMSE) was noticed when applying the EEMD-ARIMAX method to the data normalized after the anomaly detection. Commercial exploitation of the Argentine shortfin squid (Illex argentinus) was virtually nonexistent in Brazilian waters until 2000 when foreign trawlers initiated their operations on slope grounds as part of a government-induced chartering program. Since then, the species has been included among the targets of a developing slope trawl fishing off southeastern and southern Brazil. Biological samples were collected from commercial catches of 25 national and seven foreign (chartered) trawlers between 23°-33°S and 170-740 m depth. These samples represent two periods of the commercial exploitation of Illex argentinus in Brazil: 2001- 2003, when both chartered and national trawlers operated simultaneously, and 2006-2007, when only national vessels continued to exploit I. argentinus along with other slope stocks. Catches contained immature and maturing squid throughout the year, as well as at least two distinct, fully mature, spawning groups: one composed of small-sized males and females present year-round on the shelf-break/ upper slope (< 400 m), and the other consisting of large squid present only in austral winter-spring in southern (26°-29°S) and deep fishing grounds (400-700 m). The latter group has sustained the large winter catches reported since 2000 and the large sizes and concentrations of the specimens sparked the interest of the fishing industry as a potential target of the slope fishery. The reproductive attributes and temporal/ spatial distribution patterns of winter spawners support the hypothesis that relates this group to migrating concentrations of a north Patagonian shelf stock. If confirmed, the present data would underscore the need to consider multinational shared stock management strategies in the SW Atlantic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present work had as objective to evaluate the effect of application or not of nitrogen in covering on "water" beans, cultivated under different vegetal covers. The experiment was carried out in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks in an split-plot outline scheme, with four repetitions. The parcels were constituted by different vegetal covers (high density maize, cotton and wheat) and subparcels by nitrogen sidedressing application (0 and 70 kg ha-1). Bean sowing (Carioca Precocious) was carried out in September, 2005. The following evaluations were conducted: cycle, plant population, components, mass of 100 grains, yield, dry matter and grain crude protein. It can be concluded that bean yield was increased when cultivated after wheat culture, and that nitrogen fertilization in covering increased yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The soils in the common bean-producing regions (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) of Brazil are usually acid and conta\y66\yin toxic levels of aluminum (Al) for plants. This ion causes yield losses by inhibiting root cell expansion, thus reducing water and nutrient uptake. This study investigates the optimal Al concentration for the screening of genotypes in hydroponics cultivation and tries to identify cultivars and lines for cultivation in Al-toxic soils. The study consisted of two series of experiments. In the first one, four cultivars were evaluated at five Al concentrations (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 ppm) and in the second, four independent tests were carried out (1-carioca, 2-black, 3-red, and 4-white), each with seven genotypes and two Al concentrations (0 and 4 ppm). The optimized concentration of Al in the first stage was 4 ppm, which allowed the early identification of genotypes with less affected development under Al toxicity in the second stage. The common bean cultivars IPR Quero-Quero (carioca group), BRS Esplendor (black group), KID 44 (red group), and WLine 5 (white group) may be indicated for cultivation under Al toxicity. [Display omitted] • Prescribed fire (PF) is a land management practice. • Knowledge on PF application in Brazilian mountain environments is scarce. • Soil properties and organic matter chemistry were monitored in the short and medium term after PF application. • Organic matter recovered to its initial condition after 240 days since PF. Prescribed fire (PF) is a management practice used ecosystems where the occurrence of wildfires is high due to the accumulation of biomass on the surface. In general, studies dealing with fire-affected soils evidence the degradation of less thermo-labile structures, with the preservation of more thermo-stable phases. As studies in mountain environments in Brazil are scarce and considering that the practice of PF has been on the rise in recent years, the present study aimed to quantifying and characterizing the impact of PF on soil organic matter in the Itatiaia National Park, Rio de Janeiro-Brazil. In a 240 days period, we assessed the impact of PF on soil pH, base cations release, available P, C and N contents and stocks, soil organic matter (SOM) quality. Among other techniques, we applied ATR-FTIR and 13 C NMR spectroscopy. Soil chemical and physical attributes were also quantified. At 10 days, PF application caused the release of labile organic carbon (LOC) forms, inducing an increase in content of humic fractions in the form of C-FA and C-HA. The humification process, nevertheless, occurred at a lower speed than the incorporation of LOC. Humin contents, in fact, did not systematically increase with time. At 10 days following PF, a decrease in carbohydrates and peptides occurred, with greater HA aromaticity. After 240 days since PF, the structural characteristics of HA were restored to levels like the original (pre-PF) condition. At 120 days after PF, the pH value, base saturation, Mg, Na and P increased in soil. However, the amount of C and N accumulated in the soil did not increase with PF application. We observed that up to 120 days of PF, the mineralization process seems to occur in priority over humification. A period longer than 240 days seems anyway needed to restore soil C and N stocks. We investigated the influence of seed-feeding beetles (Chrysomelidae, Bruchinae) and their parasitoids on the germination performance of two Fabaceae, Leucaena leucocephala and Senna multijuga. We collected 150 fruits per species in forest fragments in the city of Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brazil, between July and August 2020. Seeds were examined and separated into predated and non-predated categories. The predated category was divided into two subcategories: predated by Coleoptera (Bruchinae) (PCO) and predated in the presence of Coleoptera parasitoids (PARCO). The non-predated category was divided into artificially injured (AI), intact seeds without insect infestation (IS), and intact seeds with insect infestation (SIF). Seeds of S. multijuga and L. leucocephala germinated to 40% and 30%, respectively. PCO and PARCO seeds not only had a negative and restricting influence on S. multijuga germination (no germination) but also contributed to a large proportion of non-viable predated seeds (38%). PCO (7%) and PARCO (23%), on the other hand, improved L. leucocephala germination. This work represents one of the first attempt to evaluate the parasitoid effect on seeds germination. Our results contribute to a better understanding of the effect of herbivore predation and the presence of parasitoids on host plant seed germination, which can be critical to mother plant fitness depending on plant species. Further studies are necessary to determine the extend seed consumption by beetles and the presence of their parasitoids may facilitate or impair seed germination, and consequently plant fitness in other systems. Due to the energy crisis caused by the progressive depletion of fossil fuel sources, the search for alternative fuels from renewable sources is in growing demand. Therefore, the manufacturing of biodiesel from fish waste might help the environment as an alternative for the reduction of residues that are harmful if incorrectly disposed. Biodiesel from residual oil of tilapia waste was manufactured by means of transesterification, basic catalysis and methyl route. This study assessed mandatory parameters regulated by the Brazilian National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) for biodiesel commercialization. It also determined values for specific mass, kinematic viscosity, water content, acidity level, flash point, oxidative stability and calorific value of fish oil biodiesel. Biodiesel calorific value analysis reported levels that are similar to those of diesel. Other parameters that characterize fish oil biodiesel physically and chemically according to specifications of ANP resolution No. 7/2008 were evaluated, and indicated that fish oil is a promising alternative for biodiesel manufacturing. Deforestation of native ecosystems causes microclimatic changes at the edge of the remaining forest fragments. This "edge effect" can modify soil attributes, although there is little information on this. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the edge effect on soil microclimate conditions, chemical, microbiological and arthropod community attributes and their relationship with litter attributes in a fragment of Semideciduous Seasonal Forest, in Piraí, RJ, Brazil. In the middle of the dry period (June/2019), four ranges of distances parallel to each other were established from the edge of the forest fragment: Edge: 0 m; Range 1: 50 m; Range 2: 100 m; and Interior: 160 m. In each range, five sampling points were established, spaced 10 m apart, where soil samples were collected in the 0–5 cm layer and litter samples. This material was employed to determine microclimatic, chemical and biological (arthropod community and microbiological attributes) attributes of the soil; and litter stock, concentration and content of nutrients. Forest fragmentation altered litter attributes and consequently soil moisture and nutrients, the communities' attributes of soil arthropods and microorganisms. These modifications in such aspects of nutrient cycling could compromise the forest functioning and the conservation of local biodiversity. Thus, we suggested the planting of non-pioneer native tree species in distances closest to the forest edge and installing of ecological corridors to connect the forest fragment to other remnants, in order to diminish the edge effect. • Deforestation of native ecosystems induces tropical forests fragmentation. • We evaluated the edge effect on litter and soil attributes. • Forest fragmentation changed litter, soil chemical and microbiological attributes. • Soil arthropod community was also affected by edge effect. • Edge effect changed the attributes up to 50 m towards the interior of forest. • Cover crops and soil management had no influence on crambe oil content. • Cover crops, chiseling and no-tillage did not affect crambe oil yield. • Crambe presents rusticity for marginal soils. Soil compaction on no-tillage (NT) system is one of the main problems for sustainable grains production in clay soils. However, some Brassicas, such as crambe (Crambe abyssinica Hochst), may show tolerance to moderately-compacted soils. The objective of this study was evaluate the effect of cover crops and chiseling on the soil physical properties, grain yield and oil content of crambe. Five summer cover crops, pear millet (Pennisetum americanum), sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea), pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan), sunn hemp (Crotalaria spectabilis), and velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens) and two soil management systems (chiseling and no-tillage) were evaluated for three years in Brazil. Chiseling soil management decreased soil bulk density and increased total porosity, but chiseling had short-term effects on soil physical properties (12 months). Cover crops showed no difference regarding the effects on soil physical properties. The traditional no-tillage system presented higher soil bulk density and lower total porosity, which did not affect crambe grain and oil yield. In this study we investigate the niche interaction between the frogs Physalameus cuvieri and Physalaemus kroyeri that occur in syntopy in water bodies of the Atlantic Forest located in the eastern Bahia State, Brazil. We investigated the niche width and overlap in the calling activity time, microhabitat use, diet composition, advertisement call, and body size. Both species preferred the same substrate and calling substrate categories, and showed low niche width values and high spatial niche overlap values. The pseudocommunity analysis revealed the absence of competition in space use. Ants and termites were the most important items in the diet of both species with the pseudocommunity analysis indicating an absence of competition in the diet. The two species demonstrate a greater similarity in body proportions and a high overlap in the calling activity time. However, they showed divergence in acoustic parameters, especially in the dominant frequency and call duration. Our results reinforce the role of advertisement call as a relevant attribute for anuran coexistence and highlight the importance of analyzing the various axes of the multidimensional niche for the most reliable description of the existence and magnitude of niche partitioning.

Objectives: to review the state of the art on Advanced Nursing Practices., Methods: a scoping review of existing publications up to 2020, in the PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, LILACS, BDENF, Web of Science and Scopus databases, identified by descriptors "Prática Avançada de Enfermagem" or "Advanced Practice Nursing". A total of 184 documents were selected. The characterization of this study was carried out, followed by the construction of an overview of different regions of the world., Results: studies showed an increasing trend in the last decade, being present in all continents, although 43.5% correspond to opinion articles, comments, editorials and event reports. Even with similar aspects, the justifications for Advanced Nursing Practices reflect specific regional needs., Final Considerations: the studies still lack methodological variety and emphasis on the specificities of countries and their health systems, in addition to greater detail on labor regulation, professional training and the impacts of these practices in nursing.

Undergraduates may face challenges to assure food security, related to economic and mental distress, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to assess food insecurity and its associated factors in undergraduates during the COVID-19 pandemic. An online cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2020 to February 2021 with 4775 undergraduates from all Brazilian regions. The questionnaire contained socio-economic variables, the validated Brazilian food insecurity scale, and the ESQUADA scale to assess diet quality. The median age of the students was 22.0 years, and 48.0% reported income decreasing with the pandemic. Food insecurity was present in 38.6% of the students, 4.5% with severe food insecurity and 7.7% moderate. Logistic regressions showed students with brown and black skin color/race presented the highest OR for food insecurity; both income and weight increase or reduction during the pandemic was also associated with a higher OR for food insecurity, and better diet quality was associated with decreased OR for food insecurity. Our study showed a considerable presence of food insecurity in undergraduates. Policy for this population must be directed to the most vulnerable: those with brown and black skin color/race, who changed income during the pandemic, and those presented with difficulties maintaining weight and with poor diet quality.

The search for vegetal species regarding effectiveness in the phytoremediation of soils is of great importance, mainly in function of the great environmental problems, such as soil contamination with heavy metals, the necessity of producing more food, among others that mankind face today. This work aimed (i) to evaluate phytoremediation capacity of Crambe abyssinica Hochst and its growth in soil artificially contaminated with Cd and Pb, and (ii) to evaluate the possible impacts of crambe cultivation in contaminated soil conditions, in order to evaluate, to test, and to question the Brazilian CONAMA 420, providing important information that can be useful for governmental and environmental purposes. Two simultaneous experiments were developed, one for each metal. The soils were contaminated with salts of CdCl 2 and PbCl 2 H 2 O in five doses based on the investigation values (IV) of CONAMA Resolution 420, resulting in 0; 1.5; 3; 9 and 30 mg kg -1 for Cd and 33; 90; 180; 540 and 1800 mg kg -1 for Pb. Gaseous exchange, development, nutritional composition and production of plant components, as well as phytoavailability of metals, were evaluated. The contamination with metals reduced photosynthesis, increased breathing as well as leading to a negative effect on the mineral nutrition and productivity in general; Plants cultivated in soil with Cd presented higher phytoavailability when compared to those cultivated in the Pb conditions, being found metals in all parts of the crambe plants from 1.5 mg kg - 1 of Cd in the soil; and Pb was retained only in roots, not being translocated in the plant. The world currently faces severe biodiversity losses caused by anthropogenic activities such as deforestation, pollution, the introduction of exotic species, habitat fragmentation, and climate changes. Disease ecology in altered environments is still poorly understood. The golden-headed lion tamarin (GHLT, Leontopithecus chrysomelas) is an endangered species that became invasive in an urban park in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The initially few invasive GHLT individuals became hundreds, adapted to living in proximity to humans and domestic animals. These GHLTs were captured as part of a conservation project; some animals were translocated to Bahia and some were kept in captivity. This study tested 593 GHLT for Leptospira serology; 100 and 95 GHLT for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) toLeptospira and hepatitis E virus genotype 3 (HEV-3), respectively, and 101 familiar groups for PCR to viruses (rotavirus A, norovirus GI and GII, and HEV-3). One animal had antibodies for Leptospira serovar Shermani and another for serovar Hebdomadis. One saprophyticLeptospira was found by the 16S PCR and sequencing. Viruses were not detected in samples tested. Findings suggest that the epidemiological importance of such pathogens in this GHLT population is either low or nonexistent. Background: Several food and nutrition education actions have been described in the literature, with emphasis on the recommended use of innovative methods when addressing a young audience. Digital games are an attractive, dynamic, and motivating resource for teaching and learning practices, and adolescents form the group that readily accepts and adopts new technologies. Adapting dietary and nutritional guidelines to change dietary behavior is a challenge, and game-based learning has several benefits that can be used in this sense. Thus, this study aims to outline a nutritional intervention for school-aged adolescents from the Federal District, Brazil, whose object is a digital card game aimed at promoting healthy dietary practices., Methods: In this randomized study with intervention and control groups, we propose a nutritional intervention for adolescents studying in Federal District private schools. The intervention group will be introduced to Rango Cards, a digital game specifically developed for this study. The purpose of the game is to present the concept of an adequate and healthy diet using simple information in a playful context. This game features cards for foods/meals, characters, and healthy habits. The players' choices may lead them to winning or losing. Theme selection and phase order were designed to provide a learning experience. The control group will not receive any material during the study. Both groups will complete questionnaires before and after the intervention. The game is expected to improve food knowledge and self-efficacy in the adoption of healthy practices, thus contributing to appropriate dietary consumption., Discussion: The game was designed as a food and nutrition education tool based on Brazilian dietary guidelines. We believe that Rango Cards will provide a comprehensive experience on the topic, improving the students' autonomy, motivation, and pleasure of learning., Trial Registration: RBR-72zvxv June 29, 2018; Retrospectively registered.

Two new species of Culicoides Latreille of the Neotropical subgenus Mataemyia Vargas are described and illustrated based on female specimens from Juruti, Pará, Brazil and compared with their similar congeners. This paper also presents a diagnosis of the subgenus Mataemyia and a systematic key for the identification of the 19 species of the subgenus.

Background: Studies have demonstrated that some polymorphisms in different interleukin genes may increase the risk of cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the IL-8 (rs4073) -251A/T gene polymorphism and the risk of gastric cancer (GC)., Patients and Methods: A case-control study was conducted on patients with noncardia gastric cancer. DNA was extracted from leukocytes and the IL-8 (rs4073) -251A/T polymorphism was analyzed by PCR-RFLP. Infection with Helicobacter pylori was investigated in the serum by ELISA., Results: The sample consisted of 104 patients with GC and 196 controls. Cigarette smoking (P=0.007) and high fat intake (P=0.01) were more frequent in patients with GC. The proportion of patients infected with H. pylori was similar in the two groups (P=0.101). The frequency of the genotype A/T was higher in the cancer group (P=0.008). An increased risk of GC was found in subjects carrying the genotype A/T (OR=2.50, CI: 1.27-4.90), subjects with high fat intake (OR=1.92, CI: 1.17-3.15), and smokers (OR=2.00, CI: 1.203.31)., Conclusions: Subjects with the heterozygous A/T genotype, high fat intake and smokers or ex-smokers presented an increased risk of GC. Individuals with A/A genotype may have protective effect for GC.

This study is a descriptive epidemiological analysis of morbidity and mortality from suicide in people aged 10 to 19 years living in the state of Minas Gerais. The source of the mortality data were the data available in the Mortality Information System, DATASUS of the Ministry of Health, over the period 1980-2002. The morbidity data were collected from the Hospital Information System, over the period 1998-2003. Absolute and relative simple frequencies of 2.338 hospitalizations and 1.212 deaths from attempted suicide and suicide over the chosen period were analyzed according to sex, age and method used. The population data used for calculating rates was extracted from the census conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. The International Classification of Diseases - ICD 9, from the years 1980 to 1995 and the 10th review since 1996, codes E950 to E959 and X60 to X84, were adopted respectively. The highest hospitalization rates were found among women. Self-poisoning was the most common method for attempting suicide in both sexes. However, adolescent males had the highest mortality rates and the most common methods of suicide (hanging and use of firearms) were more lethal than the method commonly chosen by females (self-poisoning). Based on these findings, the authors emphasize the need for preventing these events among young people.

The objective of this study is to contribute to the analysis of the behavior of mortality from epilepsy in Brazil over the period 1980-2003. The data were obtained through the SIM/MS (Mortality Information Subsystem of the Brazilian Health Department) and from the demographic database of the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). There was a reduction of 20,35% in the mortality rate from epilepsy in Brasil (1,13/100.000 in 1980 to 0,9/100.000 in 2003). The epidemiological analysis of the mortality rate showed: predominance of males; higher mortality coefficient in the advanced age groups; expressive increase of mortality from epilepsy in the Brazilian Northeast over the studied period. The reduction of mortality from epilepsy in Brazil evidenced in this study is in accordance with international standards. The reasons leading to the increase of mortality from epilepsy in certain population groups, particularly in the elderly, were discussed.

The objectives were to study: (1) acceptance of STD screening in non-clinical settings for asymptomatic individuals; (2) risk factors and STD prevalence among individuals in non-clinical and clinical settings; and (3) non-clinical screening of asymptomatic populations as a feasible method for STD control. We recruited 139 males and 486 females between 18 and 30 years of age from a family planning clinic, schools, and community centers in low-income neighborhoods. We asked about STD symptoms and STD/HIV risk behaviors and tested the individuals for gonorrhea, Chlamydia, syphilis, and HIV. Except for HIV, women recruited directly from the community had higher STD rates than those who came in for care at the clinic. Screening in non-clinical settings in Brazil is feasible and has a high yield among young adults in low-income communities. Infected participants would likely never have otherwise sought care or been tested or treated. STD control efforts could be implemented in any site that can reach populations at risk and become a routine procedure in health care settings where people report for problems unrelated to STDs.
