Upon reading the headline, the author decided to dig deeper and found that Lindy Vivas who was a volleyball coach at Fresno State was fired in 2004 after coaching her team to the best season in the history of the college. The author also discovered that the university decided to let Vivas go for failing to meet basic goals for improving the volleyball program.

The article presents information on three sex-discrimination legal cases against California State University at Fresno brought by female employees of the athletics department. The university admits no wrongdoing but settled the lawsuit filed by Diane Milutinovich, a former associate athletics director for the university who maintains that she was forced out due to her advocacy of more opportunities for female athletes. Prior to Milutinovich's case, the university lost a case in which former women's volleyball coach Lindy Vivas accused it of firing her due to officials' impression of her sexual orientation and her advocacy for female athletes. The third case, still pending to date, was brought by former women's basketball coach Stacy Johnson-Klein.
