Private schools have long played a crucial role in male elite formation but their importance to women's trajectories is less clear. In this paper, we explore the relationship between girls' private schools and elite recruitment in Britain over the past 120 years – drawing on the historical database of Who's Who, a unique catalogue of the elite. We find that alumni of elite girls schools have been around 20 times more likely than other women to reach elite positions. They are also more likely to follow particular channels of elite recruitment, via the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, private members clubs and elite spouses. Yet such schools have also consistently been less propulsive than their male-only counterparts. We argue this is rooted in the ambivalent aims of girls elite education, where there has been a longstanding tension between promoting academic achievement and upholding traditional processes of gendered social reproduction. This paper investigates the challenges of tackling multiple uncertainties in strategic plan implementation. Through a case study of a planned urban extension in the east of England, the paper examines the approaches that were adopted to tackle different types of uncertainties, including value uncertainties, organisational uncertainties and external uncertainties. The findings suggest that strategic, sub-regional plans are particularly vulnerable to external uncertainties, and that it is difficult to address external uncertainties through contingency plans, given the impact of political changes on the legitimacy of value assumptions underpinning each plan period. Nevertheless, the findings indicate the importance of mature, multi-actor partnership arrangements for development plan-making and implementation, which can facilitate the mitigation of organisational uncertainties following implementation failure. This implies that effective plan implementation is less about the circumvention of undesirable uncertainties, and more about the capacity to deal with the ongoing, recurring emergence of multiple uncertainties. The key worker concept was introduced into the English land-use planning system as a means to address the affordability problems of low-to-moderate income public sector workers. Local planners were granted significant discretion to interpret national planning guidance as they see fit, which gives rise to variations in local planning practice. Drawing on new institutionalism as a conceptual framework and Cambridge as a case study, the paper examines how the key worker concept has been translated into local planning policy in the light of local priorities. The paper suggests that Cambridge city planners' interpretation of the key worker concept not only provided an opportunity for the University of Cambridge to articulate its own workers' housing needs, but also shaped planning decisions at Cambridge's north-west urban extension site. The article highlights a conference titled "The Islamic Manuscript: A Conference on Conservation, Cataloguing, Accessibility, Copyright and Digitization," held on July 4 to 6, 2005, at King's College in Cambridge, England. The purpose of the conference was to asses the current threat to the preservation and the recording of the numerous and priceless manuscripts which are under threat worldwide. At the conference, Imtiaz Ahmad presented two papers on the current situation.

This paper explores the migration patterns of women who studied at Girton and Newnham prior to 1939 through whom dissemination of knowledge and values flowed from Cambridge overseas. It also considers organisations that fostered women's mobility in empire, particularly the Colonial Intelligence League for Educated Women and the International Federation of University Women. The former exemplified links with empire and Europe and dissemination of imperial values and practices, while the latter fostered women's international mobility around interwar notions of the 'international mind' and links with the League of Nations. It ends by looking at the work of Cambridge-educated women in League of Nations structures. The article addresses cultural transmission through a prosopographical approach to mobility to illustrate the larger patterns constituted by the myriad individual lives that formed themselves in networks, relationships, institutions and careers across a global canvas. For some Cambridge-educated women the notion of career included shifting combinations of paid employment, voluntary activity and domestic and familial responsibilities. While teaching formed their main occupation and the most direct medium for dissemination of knowledge and values, it must be seen alongside a more diverse range of occupations in which academic values might also be embedded. It is argued that values and practices of empire and commonwealth became inflected in internationalism in new ways, and the authors point to the need for further research into the role that Cambridge-educated women played in the tensions of empire, commonwealth and internationalism. This article will argue that the current historiography considers the 'public school experience' of the First World War too narrowly, and will emphasise that boys from a wide range of establishments experienced the war in a similar fashion to those at elite public schools. It will do this through a case study of the alumni of the Perse Grammar School, Cambridge. By approaching the experience of Perseans in a thematic fashion it will shed new light on how the alumni of schools just below and developing towards full public-school status were affected by the war, an area hitherto not fully explored. This paper explores the interplay of factors that produce specific local patterns of interaction between firms and universities, using survey evidence from a comparative study of two e´lite locations, the Oxford and Cambridge regions. It uses these examples to examine why innovating firms have external links, why they have them with universities, which spatial mechanisms are significant in the place-specific technology transfer links universities have with firms in their immediate hinterlands, and what kinds of institutional factors influence the form links take. The 'Cambridge Phenomenon' has achieved global recognition as an exemplar of economic success. After decades of post-war planning restraint, a major shift in the strategic planning framework saw the city region enthusiastically backing future growth. Faced, subsequently, with abolition of formal strategic planning at a national level and when many local councils took the opportunity to scale back development proposals, Cambridge reasserted its commitment to growth. The new 'localism' and the 2012 National Planning Policy Framework, however, leaves this strategy - and the Cambridge Phenomenon itself - potentially vulnerable. This article explains the continuing momentum behind growth in the face of radical planning reform and looks at the potential tensions between this and the new localism. This article explores the ways in which “Englishness” is constructed in relation to the siting of mosques, using Cambridge as a case study. After engaging with contemporary debates on Englishness and multiculturalism, the authors examine the responses to a planning application to build a mosque in the Mill Road area of the city. In public responses to the proposal, discourses of culture and heritage feature strongly. This contrasts with the ostensibly neutral language of the official planning procedure. An early twentieth-century assemblage dating to ca. 1913-21 associated with staff that worked for and lived in the associated hostel of the Robert Sayle department store in Cambridge, England, contained a mixture of material that was supplied by the business for communal activities and personal items. The contrast between these two types of material allows the relationship between the business and its staff to be explored. The article examines theatrical productions presented at the Festival Theatre in Cambridge, England during the 1920s and 1930s. The work of theater owner and promoter Terence Gray in developing a theatre which followed the model of Greek open-air theatres while incorporating modernist equipment such as directed and colored electric lighting. Particular focus is given to productions of plays written by George Bernard Shaw including "Androcles and the Lion," produced by Herbert Prentice, "Caesar and Cleopatra," produced by T. G. Saville, and "Heartbreak House," produced by Cyril Wood. Gray's involvement in the Cambridge community, student involvement in the theatre, and Gray's thoughts concerning Shaw's works are explored.

Fifty years after the death of Jan Smuts, Prime Minister of South Africa and for the last two years of his life Chancellor of Cambridge University, Commonwealth studies in general and history in particular is thriving in the university. The Smuts Memorial Fund for Commonwealth Studies, inaugurated in 1952, has been the backbone of the university's activities through its support for a broad range of activities. But it is accepted that despite his qualities and achievements he did nothing to promote the political advancement of the majority population in South Africa. Equally, he was seen by the Afrikaners as compromised in his relationship with the colonial power, while in 1948 the South African white electorate rejected him, much to the surprise of the British governing elite and the African National Congress. A case study of a pioneering enterprise founded in 1934 by a Cambridge scientist is used to explore the distinctive strengths and weaknesses of technology-based companies with academic origins. The case exemplifies the importance of a knowledge network for technology transfer and of collective effort by a professional team. The need for a close relationship with a major company is identified. Small innovative enterprises are vulnerable to takeover by a larger corporation, which provide needed resources at the price of a reduction in innovative capacity.
