The fatty acid compositions of 180 commercial infant, follow-on and growing-up formulas with different fat sources (plant-oil, cows' milk, goats' milk) on the Chinese market were analysed and compared with mature human milk. Fatty acid composition in formulas was dependent on fat source. The plant-oil formulas were more similar to mature human milk, while the cows' milk and goats' milk formulas contained higher levels of saturated (C4:0–C10:0) and lower levels of oleic acid and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids than those of mature human milk. There was little difference among formulas for the three stages except for the goats' milk formulas. The major fatty acids of formulas were similar to those of mature human milk, while levels of some micro-fatty acids in formulas, such as nervonic acid and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, were significantly lower than in mature human milk. The levels of 12 synthetic musks and one musk metabolite in 24 pooled human milk samples were examined in order to assess the health risks of these contaminants to breast-feeding infants of China. The 24 pooled samples comprised of 1237 individual human milk samples collected from 12 provinces of China according to WHO guidelines. Among the 13 target analytes, OTNE ([1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydro-2,3,8,8-tetramethylnaphthalen-2yl]ethan-1-one), HHCB (1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-4,6,6,7,8,8-hexamethylcyclopenta[?]-2-benzopyran), AHTN (7-acetyl-1,1,3,4,4,6-hexamethyl- 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene), musk ketone (4-tert-butyl-2,6-dimethyl-3,5-dinitroacetophenone, MK), Musk T (1,4-dioxacyclohepta decane-5,17-dione), HHCB-lactone (1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro- 4,6,6,7,8,8-hexamethyl cyclopenta[γ]-2-benzopyran-1-one) and musk ambrette (1-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-2-methoxy-4-methyl-3,5-dinitrobenzene, MA), were found in the milk samples analysed with mean (median) concentrations of 3.96 (3.91), 18.03 (15.10), 10.30 (9.38), 4.68 (4.45), < 3.70 (< 3.70), 10.02 (9.20) and < 5.20 (< 5.20) ng g-1 lipid weight, respectively, whereas ADBI (4-acetyl-1,1-dimethyl- 6-tert-butylindan), AHDI (6-acetyl-1,1,2,3,3,5-hexamethylindan), ATII (5-acetyl-1,1,2,6-tetramethyl-3-isopropylindan), musk xylene (1-tert-butyl-3,5-dimethyl-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene, MX), musk tibetene (1- tert-butyl-3,4,5-trimethyl-2,6-dinitrobenzene, MT) and musk moskene (1,1,3,3,5-pentamethyl-4,6-dinotroindane, MM) were not detected. Significantly positive associations were observed in concentration levels between HHCB and AHTN (p < 0.001), HHCB and HHCB-lactone (p < 0.05), AHTN and HHCB-lactone (p < 0.001), and MK and OTNE (p < 0.05). No statistical difference was found in musk concentrations between rural and urban areas in China (p > 0.05). Themean (median) estimated daily intakes by infants were 20.5 (20.2), 93.4 (78.2), 53.4 (48.6), 24.2 (23.0) and 51.9 (47.6) ng kg-1 body weight for OTNE, HHCB, AHTN, MK and HHCB-lactone, respectively. This study is a one of the very few investigating the dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethanes (DDTs) (summation of o,p′-DDE, p,p′-DDE, o,p′-DDD, p,p′-DDD, o,p′-DDT, and p,p′-DDT) in multiple human matrices in mothers' milk, placenta and hair collected from residents from two coastal cities: Guiyu (GY) and Taizhou (TZ) and one inland city: Lin'an (LA). TZ (milk: 360±319ng/g lipid wt.) showed significantly higher concentrations of DDTs than those from LA (milk: 190±131ng/g lipid wt.), whereas, concentrations of DDTs in GY (milk: 305±109ng/g lipid wt.) were in between TZ and LA. In addition, levels of DDTs in the human tissues from TZ (placenta: 122±109ng/g lipid wt.; hair: 79.9±215ng/g dry wt.) were significantly higher than those from Lin'an (placenta: 49.2±30.2ng/g lipid wt.; hair: 10.8±7.09ng/g dry wt.). The above concentrations of DDTs in milk exceeded the Codex Maximum Residue Limits/Extraneous Maximum Residue Limits for milk (20ng/g lipid wt. whole milk), indicating that the human milk samples were grossly polluted. The present study revealed that human specimens collected from the coastal city (TZ) were more contaminated with inland one (LA), based on the levels of DDTs contained in samples which may be due to the higher dietary exposure to DDTs via consumption of contaminated seafood. The estimated daily intakes of DDTs by GY, TZ and LA infants were 1.69±1.86, 1.48±0.79, and 0.95±0.73μg/kg body wt./day, respectively which did not exceed 10μg/kg body wt./day, the provisional tolerable daily intake proposed by the Food and Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization. Abstract: Exposure of mothers to organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) was assessed by measuring the levels of 20 OCPs in 70 human breast milk samples pooled from 210 individuals from China, Korea and Japan. The OCPs were analyzed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in electron capture negative ionization (ECNI) monitoring. The results showed that β-hexachlorocyclohexane and hexachlorobenzene were one order of magnitude higher in China than in the other nations, whereas chlordanes and polychlorinated biphenyl levels were highest in Japan. Heptachlor epoxide, dieldrin, endrin, toxaphenes and mirex were detected in most samples, and levels of these chemicals were significantly higher in Japan (0.8–4.5ngg−1 lipid), followed by Korea (0.2–4.7ngg−1 lipid), and lowest in China (less than 1.0ngg−1 lipid). α- and β-endosulfans were detected at a range of 0.9–1.5ngg−1 lipid levels in all samples analyzed, and their levels were higher in Korean than in Chinese samples. The concentrations of musks (polycyclic musks and nitro musks) and traditional organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), including dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its metabolites (DDT, DDE, DDD, and total DDTs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) in breast milk collected in Shanghai, China during the period 2006–2010, were determined. The total concentrations ranged from 4.7 to 276.2 (median: 58.4) ng/glipid weight (lw) for musks and from 88.3 to 2532.9 (median: 1003.8)ng/glw for OCPs. 4,4′-DDE (median: 655.4ng/glw) was the predominant OCP, followed by β-HCH (median: 172.5ng/g lw), and HHCB (1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-4,6,6,7,8,8-hexamethylcyclopenta[γ]-2-benzopyran) (median: 17.7ng/g lw) was the dominant musk. There was no statistical correlation between total musk concentrations, and HCB, HCHs, DDTs or total OCP concentrations, indicating their different exposure routes and metabolism in humans (p=0.182–0.325). Clear reductions in temporal trends in the levels of DDTs and HCB, especially HCHs (p<0.01) were observed during the sampling period, and the high DDE/DDT ratios in the samples indicated past exposure to DDTs. The relatively high median concentrations of HHCB and HHCB-lactone in 2010 suggested a probably increasing tendency. There were statistically significant influences regarding maternal age and parity on OCP accumulation (p=0.001–0.002), but no significant effect on musks was found (p=0.542–0.919). Musk exposure in neonates via breast milk was 2–3 orders of magnitude lower than suggested provisional tolerable daily intakes (PTDI). The estimated daily intakes for HCB and DDTs were below the PTDI in Canada, however, 56% of those for HCHs exceeded the Canadian PTDI. OCP contamination of breast milk requires further attention. Abstract: The use of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) is increasing annually in China. Although several studies have reported significant contamination by these compounds in biological samples in China, little is known about the factors that may influence the levels of exposure and the potential health risk for infants. We investigated PBDE exposure levels in breast milk, its influencing factors and the potential health risk for infants in Shanghai, China by enrolling 48 healthy women between September 2006 and April 2007. PBDE exposure was assessed by analyses of seven PBDE congeners in breast milk. The estimated daily intake of PBDEs by infants via breastfeeding was determined for evaluating the potential health risk for infants. The median (range) of total PBDE content in breast milk was 8.81 (1.92–41.55)ng/g lipid. 34 (71%) of the 48 samples tested positive for all seven congeners. Maternal education level and household monthly salary were positively associated with PBDE concentration in breast milk (r=0.337, p=0.019 and r=0.436, p=0.004, respectively). The median of estimated daily intake of BDE-99 (6.67ng/kg/day) by infants via breastfeeding was below the human no adverse effect level (NAEL) set for BDE-99 for neurodevelopmental toxicity (18.8ng/kg/day). However, 3 (6%) of the samples exceeded the human NAEL. Taking the high detection rate of PBDEs in breast milk together with 6% of their EDI higher than NAEL in Shanghai, more studies on the effects of maternal PBDE exposure on fetal growth and child neurodevelopment are warranted. Abstract: Breast milk samples (n=74) from the general maternal population of Zhejiang province were analyzed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Samples were divided into urban and rural groups. Mean ∑PCDD/F, ∑PCB and ∑PBDE concentrations were 71.4±40.8, 42774±27841 and 2679±944pgg−1 lipid in the urban group and 38.6±38.1, 26546±11375 and 2731±1093pgg−1 lipid in the rural group, respectively. WHO-TEQ concentrations for dioxin-like PCBs and PCDD/Fs were 2.66±1.43 and 3.90±2.60pgg−1 lipid in the urban group and 1.83±0.93 and 2.27±1.55pgg−1 lipid in the rural group, respectively. Congener profiles for these pollutants were compared between human samples (adipose tissue and breast milk) and foodstuffs (seafood, hen eggs, and freshwater fish). Similar PCB and PCDD/F congener patterns were observed, suggesting that dietary intake is a significant source for human exposure to PCBs and PCDD/Fs. However, much lower PBDE congener levels were detected in breast milk than in foodstuffs, which implies that pathways other than dietary intake may also account for human exposure to PBDEs. Abstract: Breast milk has been widely used as a bioindicator to assess the extent of human exposure to PBDEs via various exposure routes. In this study, 48 breast milk samples were collected from primiparous women in Shanghai city, and 14 PBDEs congeners (BDE-28, −47, −99, −100, −153, −154, −183, −196, −197, −203, −206, −207, −208, and −209) were quantified using gas chromatography-electron capture negative ionization-mass spectrometry. The mean concentration of total PBDEs was 8.6ng/g lipid weight, and ranged from 1.8 to 26.7ng/g lipid weight. These concentration levels were similar to those reported in Europe and Asia, but one order of magnitude lower than those in North America. The congener profiles in this study exhibited a specific pattern in human milk found worldwide, BDE-153 and BDE-28 accounted for a relatively higher proportion of lower brominated BDEs (from tri- to hepta-BDEs), whereas higher brominated BDEs (from octa- to deca-BDEs) contributed more than 70% of the total PBDEs. The Spearman''s correlation coefficient among higher brominated BDEs showed a positive relationship, and concentration levels of higher brominated BDEs were statistically different between office workers and housewives. Due to relatively higher proportion of PBDEs from octa- to deca-BDEs were detected, air inhalation and dust ingestion might be the major exposure routes of higher brominated BDEs. Abstract: Sixty breast milk samples were collected in Shenzhen, China from July to November in 2007. The samples were analyzed of the concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The range of upper-bound for ∑TEQ-(PCDD/Fs+PCBs) in the samples was 4.10–35.3pgTEQg−1 lipid (median: 10.6pgTEQg−1 lipid; mean: 11.9pgTEQg−1 lipid). The levels of the measured contaminants in the breast milk had significant correlations with the length of inhabitation period in Shenzhen (r=0.487, p<0.05 for PCDD/Fs, r=0.431, p<0.05 for PCBs and r=0.478, p<0.05 for ∑TEQ-(PCDD/Fs+PCBs)), and the consumption rate of fish (r=0.366, p<0.05 for PCDD/Fs, r=0.486, p<0.05 for PCBs and r=0.416, p<0.05 for ∑TEQ-(PCDD/Fs+PCBs)), respectively. Moreover, significant positive correlations were also detected between the participant''s age (r=0.305, p<0.05 for ∑TEQ-PCBs and r=0.275, p<0.05 for ∑TEQ-(PCDD/Fs+PCBs)) and the body burdens of these contaminants respectively. It is estimated that the daily intake (EDI) of the sum of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs by the breast-fed infants was 5.60–161pgTEQkg−1 bw per day (mean: 48.2pgTEQkg−1 bw per day; median: 42.2pgTEQkg−1 bw per day). The result showed that both the body burdens of PCDD/Fs and PCBs of the recruit population and the calculated EDI of the breast-fed infants were higher than those in the non-exposed areas in mainland China. This suggests that continuous surveillance on PCDD/Fs and PCBs levels in human milk is critical to more precisely evaluate the human health risk posed by the negative environmental impact in Shenzhen in the future. This paper provides the results of an investigation on dietary intakes and internal doses of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) for nonsmoking women from Beijing, China. Concentrations of PAHs were measured by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) for human milk, placenta, and umbilical cord blood samples from 40 nonsmoking women and for 144 composite food samples covering major food categories. Information on food consumption and estimated ingestion doses of PAHs by the cohort was also collected individually. Relationship among the studied human samples and relative importance of breastfeeding to the total exposure dose of infants were addressed. The median (mean and standard deviation) total concentrations of 15 PAHs in human milk, placenta, and umbilical cord blood with (or without) fat normalization were 278 (9.30 ± 5.75), 819 (35.9 ± 15.4), and 1370 (5.521 ± 3.71) ng/g of fat, respectively, and the corresponding levels of benzo[a]pyrene equivalent (B[a]Pequiv) were 11.2 (0.473 ± 0.605), 16.2 (0.717 ± 0.318), and 13.1 (0.140 ± 0.225) ng/g of fat, respectively. The calculated intake of B[a]Pequiv by Beijing cohort varied from 0.609 to 4.69 ng·kg-1·day-1 with a median value of 1.93 (2.09 ± 0.921 mean ± standard deviation) ng·kg-1·day-1. Significant correlations were found among human milk, placenta, and umbilical cord blood (p < 0.05) for low-molecular-weight PAHs, indicating selective transfer potential of individual PAHs from mother to fetus. Internal dose of PAHs was not in proportion to amounts of food ingestion, daily dietary intake, lifestyle, and social-demographic characteristics of the participants (p > 0.05). Ingested doses of PAHs (3.00-102 ng·kg-1·day-1), which were much higher than the inhaled doses (0.152-8.50 ng·kg-1·day-1), were 3-4 orders of magnitude lower than the recommended reference doses, unlikely to impose any obvious risk based on current knowledge. The occurrence of persistent organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in breast milk samples collected from mothers from twelve provinces in mainland China was investigated. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) were the most prevalent agent, followed by HCHs and HCB, whereas levels of chlordane compounds, drins and mirex were lower. The relatively lower DDE/DDT ratio in the Fujian rural area suggested more recent exposure to DDT than in other areas. The mean level of DDTs in breast milk from the southern China was higher than those from northern China (p < 0.05). A positive correlation was observed between concentration of DDTs in human milk and consumption of animal-origin food, suggesting that this parameter could play an important part in influencing OCPs burdens in lactating women. Abstract: Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), especially perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), are known to occur throughout the environment and in the human population (Houde et al., 2006). The occurrence of PFCs in human umbilical cord blood and human milk, coupled with the potential developmental toxicity of PFCs, suggests the need for determining the exposure sources and magnitudes of PFCs in infants. In this study, 10 PFCs were measured in 24 pooled samples consisting of 1237 individual human milk samples. The samples were collected from 12 provinces of China in 2007. PFOS and PFOA were the predominant PFCs found in all the samples tested. The geometric mean (GM) and median of the concentrations were 46pg/mL and 49pg/mL for PFOS, 46pg/mL and 34.5pg/mL for PFOA respectively. A large variation in geographical distribution was observed for PFCs in human milk. High concentrations of PFOA (814pg/ml for the rural samples and 616pg/ml for the urban samples) were found in human milk from Shanghai. Estimated dietary intakes (EDI) were established and the median, GM and the highest EDI of the total PFCs were 17.2ng/kg/d, 17.8ng/kg/d and 129.1ng/kg/d respectively. The EDI for PFOA (88.4ng/kg/d) for Shanghai was close to the tolerable daily intake (100ng/kg/d) proposed by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment and the Drinking Water Commission. The results suggest both mothers and infants have a high exposure to PFCs in the Shanghai region. The potential health impact of postnatal exposure through breastfeeding to infants should therefore be comprehensively evaluated. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are potential persistent organic pollutants which have raised many concerns in recent years. Research focusing on children exposure to PBDEs is important but insufficient. The levels and patterns of PBDEs in children''s plasma from Dalian, China were studied for the first time. Seventeen PBDE congeners (BDE-30, 28, 35, 37, 75, 47, 66, 100, 99, 116, 155, 154, 153, 183, 181, 190 and 209) in 29 plasma samples were measured. Median PBDE concentration was 31.61ng g−1 lipid. BDE-153 was the dominant congener, followed by BDE-99, 47, and 183. High abundance of BDE-183 suggested a higher Octa-BDE use in China. No significant differences were observed between males and females or among different age groups. The levels of PBDEs in children''s plasma in the present study were 9–30 times higher than those in non-occupational exposure people from Guangzhou, South China and those in human milk of general adults from other cities of China, but were at the moderate levels of those in children around the world. Abstract: Human breast milk samples collected in 2007–2008 from four countries, Vietnam (Hanoi), China (Beijing), Korea (Seoul) and Japan (Sendai, Kyoto and Takayama), were analyzed for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its metabolites (DDTs), chlordane-related compounds (CHLs), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). Comparing with previous surveys, the present study indicates that the DDTs in breast milk from China and Vietnam had gradually decreased during the last decade, but were still 5–10 times higher than those in other nations. The ratios of p,p′-DDE/p,p′-DDT and o,p′-DDT/p,p′-DDT were higher in Beijing than in the other countries, suggesting that there is less fresh intake of commercial DDT products and a possible exposure to dicofol in China. CHL and PCB levels were relatively higher in mothers from Japan, whereas β-HCH and HCB were more common in Chinese women. In Japan, it is suspected that mothers in the urban/coastal area (Sendai) were more continuously exposed to organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) than mothers in the rural/inland area (Takayama). In addition, OCP levels in primiparae were significantly higher than those in multiparae from Japan and Korea. These indicate that both parity and regional factors are major determinants of the levels of OCPs and PCBs in human milk. On the other hand, higher concentrations of PBDEs were observed in mothers'' milk from Korea. The congener was dominated by BDE-47 (43–54%), followed by BDE-153 (23–33%) in all regions except for Beijing where BDE-28 (23%) was relatively abundant. In Japanese breast milk, regional and parity-dependent distributions were not observed for PBDEs. Among PBDE congeners, age-dependency was observed for BDE-153, which was negatively correlated (p <0.05) to the age of mothers in Kyoto (17 participants were housewives), while it increased with age in Sendai (10 participants were clerks). No such correlation was seen for BDE-47, indicating that BDE-47 was ingested and assimilated via different kinetics or routes from BDE-153 in Japan. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Residues of hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs, including α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, and δ-HCH) in human milk of two populations from Beijing and Shenyang, China were studied. In addition to human milk samples from 76 women, 271 composite food samples covering major food categories were also collected for HCH analysis. The food consumption and social-demographic characteristics of the studied populations were investigated and dietary intakes of HCHs of the milk donors on an individual basis were calculated. The dependences of HCH concentration in the human milk on food consumption, dietary intake of HCHs, and demographic characteristics were studied. It was found that β-HCH dominated the HCHs detected in the human milk. Although there were dramatic declines in HCHs in the human milk compared to historical data, the current levels (312 ± 377 na/g fat and 360 ± 235 ng/g fat as the means and standard deviations for Beijing and Shenyang, respectively) were still much higher than those reported in other cities within China and around the world. It was revealed that the residual level of HCHs in the human milk was positively correlated (p < 0.001) to the quantities of food consumption. Milk, oil, vegetables, and fruits contributed a large portion of HCHs intake in Beijing, while cereals, milk, vegetables, oil, and meat were the most important dietary intake sources of HCHs in Shenyang. Both daily dietary intake of HCHs (p <0.001) and body mass index (BMI, body weight divided by the squared height) (p < 0.01) were significantly correlated with human milk HCHs. A nonlinear model was developed to predict the residues of HCHs in human milk using both dietary intake and BMI as independent variables. The study examined the levels of dioxin-like compounds in 24 pooled samples that were comprised of 1237 individual human milk samples from 12 provinces of China. The samples were taken in different regions to evaluate the body burden of these contaminants and assess their health risk to breast-feeding infants of China. The pooled samples were analyzed for 17 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and 12 dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) congeners. The population of the provinces involved in this study accounts for approximately 50% of the total Chinese population. The range of upper-bound total-TEQ in samples was from 2.59pg TEQ g−1 lipid to 9.92pg TEQ g−1 lipid with a mean of 5.42pg TEQ g−1 lipid and a median of 5.11pg TEQ g−1 lipid. PCDD/Fs-TEQ and total-TEQ in human milk from rural areas were lower than those from urban areas. The positive correlations were found between total-TEQ level in human milk and the consumption of aquatic food and meat respectively. The mean estimated daily intake of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs by infants was 28.0pg TEQ kg−1 bw per day with a range from 14.2pg TEQ kg−1 bw per day to 48.6pg TEQ kg−1 bw per day. In the study, both the TEQ body burden of the sample population and estimated daily TEQ intake of breast-feeding infants were lower than those of developed countries. In 2006–2007, we collected human milk from 60 and 48 donors in the Chinese coastal cities of Tianjin and Yantai, respectively, in accordance with the WHO/UNEP global milk survey. We determined the concentrations of organochlorine pesticides by GC/MS/MS and dioxins by XDS-CALUX bioassay in the individual milk specimens. The geometric mean concentrations (GMs) of β-HCH (586.7ng g−1 fat), total DDTs (855.9ngg−1 fat), and dl-PCBs (4.4pg CALUX-TEQg−1 fat) in the milk from Yantai were higher than those from Tianjin (254.4ng g-1 fat, 654.7ngg−1 fat, 1.9pg CALUX-TEQ g−1 fat, respectively). However, the GMs of HCB (41.1ngg−1 fat) and PCDD/Fs (13.1pg CALUX-TEQg−1 fat) from Tianjin were higher than those from Yantai (15.7ng g−1 fat, 9.9pg CALUX-TEQ g−1 fat). The low ratios of DDT/(DDE+DDD) in milk from both areas suggested that past exposure contributed to the total DDTs body burden. The dl-PCBs body burden in the high sea fish intake group was higher than that in the low intake group, both with and without adjustments for potential influencing factors. For β-HCH, a marginal P value (P =0.063) was observed between high and low sea fish consumption groups after adjusting for potential influencing factors. Donors in the high freshwater fish group showed higher PCDD/Fs and HCB levels than those in the low intake group, both with and without adjustments. Further monitoring studies of POPs contamination in human milk and foods are needed in China. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The breast milk concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs; sum of eight congeners: BDE-28, 47, 99, 100, 153, 154, 183 and 209) were determined (by high resolution gas chromatographic high resolution mass spectrometry) in samples from primiparous women collected in 2006 in Tianjin, China. Dietary and lifestyle habits of the participants were obtained by questionnaires. The median total PBDE concentration (including BDE-28, 47, 99, 100, 153, 154, 183) was 2500pgg−1 lipid weight, ranging from 1700 to 4500pgg−1 lipid weight. These levels were in the same range as those from Europe and Japan but much lower than those from North America. The congener profile in China was also different from other countries. The contribution of BDE-28 was around 15%, much higher than any other country, implying that a different Penta-BDE formulation might be used in the Chinese market. The lower ratio of the sum of BDE-47, 99, and 100 to the sum of BDE-153 and 154 suggested that Octa-products were in more demand in China. A significant correlation was found between a woman’s PBDE concentration and the time she used electronic appliances (h/d). This implies that electronics are a potential source of PBDEs to people. Inhalation or ingestion of particulate matter (such as dust) may also be an important exposure pathway. There was no significant correlation between the PBDE concentration and the consumption of meat, fish, and milk. PCB levels in fish (collected from local rivers), atmosphere and human milk samples have been studied to determine the exposure levels of PCBs for local residents and e-waste workers in Guiyu, a major electronic waste scrapping center in China. The source appointment and correlation analyses showed that homologue composition of PCBs in 7 species of fish were consistent and similar to commercial PCBs Aroclor 1248. PCB levels in air surrounding the open burning site were significantly higher than those in residential area. Inhalation exposure contributed 27% and 93% to the total body loadings (the sum of dietary and inhalation exposure) of the local residents, and e-waste workers engaged in open burning respectively. Total PCB concentrations in human milk ranged from N.D. to 57.6 ng/g lipid, with an average of 9.50 ng/g lipid. The present results indicated that commercial PCBs derived from e-waste recycling are major sources of PCBs accumulating in different environmental media, leading to the accumulation of high chlorinated biphenyls in human beings. Fourteen PBDE congeners from mono- to deca-BDE were determined in breast milk of primiparous mothers from two locations in East China, i.e. Nanjing (n =9), an urban area, and Zhoushan (n =10), a semi rural coastal area. PBDEs were detected in all the human breast milk samples of the present study, indicating that general population in these two locations are widely exposed to these pollutants. Relatively higher concentrations of PBDEs were found in the milk of mothers from Nanjing than Zhoushan, suggesting the existence of significant sources of PBDEs in urban areas. PBDE levels in the present study were similar to those in European countries, but one or two orders of magnitude lower than in North America. Except for BDE-3, all congeners from di- to deca-BDE were detected in the samples of the present study. BDE-209, a congener considered to have less bioavailability, was detected in about 50% of the samples at concentrations higher than that of other congeners. Other higher brominated congeners, such as BDE-153, -197 and -207, were also prominent in the present study, which is different from the pattern generally observed in previous studies on human milk as well as biota samples. These results may indicate that the inhabitants of Nanjing and Zhoushan are exposed to location specific sources of PBDEs. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper presents the results of an investigation on association between dietary intakes and human milk concentrations of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and metabolites (DDTs) of two populations from Beijing and Shenyang, China. We analyzed human milk samples from 76 women and 287 composite food samples covering major food categories for concentrations of DDTs. We also collected information on food consumptions and calculated dietary intakes of DDTs of the participants on individual basis. The median values of the measured DDTs in human milk were 125 ng/g lipid and 132 ng/g lipid for the samples from Beijing and Shenyang, respectively. The mean (±standard deviation) daily dietary intakes of DDTs by the two groups were 32.0 ± 14.2 ng/kg·day and 27.9 ± 11.3 ng/kg·day, respectively. The temporal trends of decreasing in DDTs and increasing in DDE/DDT ratio suggested that the residuals were primarily from historical application. We found a significant correlation between human milk concentration and daily dietary intake of DDTs, while the dietary intake could explain 22% of the variation in the DDTs in human milk. In addition to dietary exposure, we also found that maternal body mass index (body weight divided by the squared height), body weight, body height, and mother's age contributed significantly to the variation of DDTs in human milk after intake normalization. The result of a probabilistic risk assessment indicated that the exposure of infants to DDTs through breast feeding would be a public health concern for years to come, although breast feeding is still recommended. Abstract: The levels of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in breast milk from Beijing, China, were studied. The 6 predominant PBDEs congeners (BDE47, BDE99, BDE100, BDE153, BDE154 and BDE183) in 23 pooled breast milk samples from 205 mothers living in Beijing were measured. Mean and median of ΣPBDEs concentrations in all samples were 1.12ngg−1 lipid and 1.07ngg−1 lipid, respectively. The Statistical difference in concentrations was found between urban areas (1.22ngg−1 lipid, n =14) and rural areas (0.97ngg−1 lipid n =9). The sum of BDE47 and BDE153 accounted for more than 70% of ΣPBDEs in most samples. The significant correlation was found between the ΣPBDEs in pooled samples and average of consumption of food of animal origin in the pools in urban area. However, there was no correlation was found between the ΣPBDEs in pooled samples and average of consumption of food of animal origin in the pools in rural area of Beijing. The current study showed that the level of PBDEs in breast milk from Beijing was lower than that from South China and some developed countries such as USA and Sweden. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been extensively used as flame retardants in consumer goods. Sufficient evidence shows that PBDEs have been rapidly accumulating in the environment worldwide. In Asia, deca-bromodiphenyl ether has been produced and used in large quantities, while penta-BDE has largely ceased in the mid-1990s. This paper summarizes and critically reviews the status of PBDE pollution in East Asia, with emphases on the comparisons with Europe and North America and the interpretation of the differences. In general, the concentrations of PBDEs in atmosphere, sludge, human and biological samples of East Asia are comparable to or lower than those in Europe and North America. However, in the sediments of waters near densely populated and heavily industrialized areas, PBDE levels are among the highest ever reported in the literature. In Japan and China, concentrations of PBDEs in sediment cores showed an increasing trend for the past 20–30 years. Also, PBDEs levels in human breast milk in Japan increased about 10-fold in the past 20 years. The presence of PBDEs in fur seal has increased about 150-fold in 1994 than that in 1972. Regional and inter-continental transport cannot be confirmed due to insufficient information. However, the detection of a number of PBDE congeners in a pristine lake on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau may be an evidence of their long-range transport. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This article attempts to review the usage of nine pesticides included in the 12 Stockholm Convention persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in China and to examine the extent of DDT contamination in human milk, focusing on the Chinese populations. By comparing all the data available concerning DDTs in human milk from 19 countries, it is revealed that the Chinese populations exhibit rather high concentrations of DDTs, due to the fact that China has been a major producer and consumer of DDTs in the past, and also uses DDT for vector control, resulting in higher background levels of DDTs in different ecological compartments. The high body loading of DDT in Chinese populations is also related to the high dietary intake due to contamination of food. When comparing the data obtained recently (1998–2002), the coastal populations such as Guangzhou (DDE+DDT 2.13μgg−1 fat), Hong Kong (2.87μgg−1 fat) and Dalian (2.13μgg−1 fat) contain higher concentrations of DDTs which may reflect the dietary difference of consuming more meat and fish, than other Chinese populations (Beijing 1.96μgg−1 fat; Shenyang 0.87μgg−1 fat). In general, the rather low ratio of DDE/DDT (e.g., 4.07 for Guangzhou) of the Chinese milk samples reflected the more recent releases of DDT. It is recommended to impose a tighter control on the use of DDT for vector control as well as for agricultural application, conduct regular monitoring of DDT concentrations in different ecological compartments which include air, water, sediment and biota. Human milk is a preferred indicator reflecting human body loadings of POPs including DDTs, as well as the risk which may impose on our next generation. A national wide survey is needed to investigate the intake of POPs, including POP pesticides, due to dietary differences, with a strong focus on the more sensitive populations, e.g., coastal residents who consume a large amount of fish. The article cites a study that aimed to identify and quantify organochlorine pesticides (OCP) and their metabolites in human milk in the Chinese Capital of Beijing and to obtain additional information about DDT and BHC present pollution by comparing their levels with those in previous studies. Sixty human milk samples were collected in December 1998 from healthy donors living in four different regions of Beijing including Dongcheng, Xicheng, Xuanwu and Chongwen for at least five years. Results of the study revealed that the total DDT residues in human milk was 2.04 mg/kg and the total BHC residue in women's milk was 1.18mg/kg.
