Background: There is still no specific real-world data regarding the clinical activity of immune checkpoint inhibitors in the elderly with liver cancer. Our study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of immune checkpoint inhibitors between patients aged ≥ 65 years and the younger group, while exploring their differences in genomic background and tumor microenvironment. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at two hospitals in China and included 540 patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors for primary liver cancer between January 2018 and December 2021. Patients' medical records were reviewed for clinical and radiological data and oncologic outcomes. The genomic and clinical data of patients with primary liver cancer were extracted and analyzed from TCGA-LIHC, GSE14520, and GSE140901 datasets. Results: Ninety-two patients were classified as elderly and showed better progression-free survival (P = 0.027) and disease control rate (P = 0.014). No difference was observed in overall survival (P = 0.69) or objective response rate (P = 0.423) between the two age groups. No significant difference was reported concerning the number (P = 0.824) and severity (P = 0.421) of adverse events. The enrichment analyses indicated that the elderly group was linked to lower expression of oncogenic pathways, such as PI3K-Akt, Wnt, and IL-17. The elderly had a higher tumor mutation burden than younger patients. Conclusions: Our results indicated that immune checkpoint inhibitors might exhibit better efficacy in the elderly with primary liver cancer, with no increased adverse events. Atherosclerosis (AS) is a prevalent arteriosclerotic vascular disease that forms a pathological basis for coronary heart disease, stroke, and other diseases. Inflammatory and oxidative stress responses occur throughout the development of AS. Treatment for AS over the past few decades has focused on administering high-intensity statins to reduce blood lipid levels, but these inevitably damage liver and kidney function over the long term. Natural medicines are widely used to prevent and treat AS in China because of their wide range of beneficial effects, low toxicity, and minimal side effects. We searched for relevant literature over the past 5 years in databases such as PubMed using the keywords, "atherosclerosis," "traditional Chinese medicine," "natural medicines," "inflammation," and "oxidative stress." We found that the PI3K/AKT, TLR4, JAK/STAT, Nrf2, MAPK, and NF-κB are the most relevant inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways in AS. This review summarizes studies of the natural alkaloid, flavonoid, polyphenol, saponin, and quinone pathways through which natural medicines used to treat AS. This study aimed to update and summarize progress in understanding how natural medicines treat AS via inflammatory and oxidative stress-related signaling pathways. Polygonal salt crust patches (PSCPs) in modern playas have critical hydrologic implications for arid areas, but the morphology and origin of these polygonal features are under debate. This study investigated the structure and morphological characteristics of crustal landforms in a modern playa located in the West Juyan Lake, western Inner Mongolia of China, through an integrated analysis of high-resolution remote sensing images obtained from Google Earth, pedestrian field surveys, and unmanned aerial vehicle photography. The study area covers approximately 2,650 ha and the number of salt crust patches was 3,491. Across this area, the coverage and number of salt crust patches varied with elevation and sedimentary environment. The results show that the polygonal patch pattern of the salt crust landforms was fractal, and similar polygonal patch perimeter to area ratios and landscape index values prevail in the study area. The wind erosion of material on the surface of the Gobi Desert, a mountain torrent alluvial fan, and material carried by seasonal river water probably provided the provenance of the regional salt crust landforms. The structure and morphological characteristics of salt crust in typical playas of the arid and semiarid region are important for better understanding their composition and sedimentary environment. Background: Dyslipidemia is a significant contributor to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Research on the relationship between breakfast consumption frequency and dyslipidemia in the working population is lacking. Therefore, we aimed to investigate this relationship based on a retrospective cohort study of a large working population in China. Methods: This retrospective cohort study used data from the physical examinations and questionnaire survey of working participants at Nanfang Hospital from January 20, 2015 to October 16, 2020. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to explore the relationship between breakfast consumption frequency and dyslipidemia in this working population (n = 7644). Results: The prevalence of dyslipidemia among the participants was 26.4%. The univariate logistic regression test showed that the breakfast consumption frequency was inversely correlated with dyslipidemia. After adjusting for multiple factors, such as sex, age, body mass index, hypertension, hyperuricaemia, diabetes, smoking status, alcohol consumption, education level, marital status, long-term exposure to kitchen oil fumes, attending business dinners, and sleep time, it was found that breakfast consumption remained inversely associated with dyslipidaemia. The odds ratio for daily breakfast consumption was 0.466 (95% confidence interval 0.283–0.770, P = 0.003). After adjusting for confounding factors, we found that the higher the frequency of breakfast consumption, the lower the odds ratios for hypertriglyceridaemia. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that breakfast consumption frequency was inversely correlated with dyslipidemia. The higher the frequency of breakfast, the lower the risk of hypertriglyceridaemia. This study provides a basis on which dietary suggestions for the working population and lifestyle guidance for patients with a clinical need to prevent dyslipidemia can be made. Purpose: To provide a detailed review on the therapeutic efficacy of conbercept for the management of ocular vasculopathies. Methods: A comprehensive literature search of various electronic databases was performed. Results: Ocular vasculopathy is one of the major causes of visual impairment and blindness which includes a range of disorders. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) regulates angiogenesis, enhances vascular permeability, and drives the formation of neovascularization. Anti-VEGF therapy has been shown to prevent vision loss or potentially improve vision in patients with exudative or neovascular retinal disease. The most recent anti-VEGF drug in China is conbercept. In the USA and Europe, bevacizumab is the most recently approved anti-VEGF agent. Conclusions: Conbercept serves as another anti-VEGF option for patients with neovascular AMD and other retinal vascular disorders. There have not been many clinical trials that study conbercept as compared with other currently available anti-VEGF drugs. There is a need for large-scale, well-designed, randomized clinical trials to ensure its long-term safety and efficacy and to determine if it has any advantages over other anti-VEGF agents. Background: When Angiostrongylus cantonensis develops from the third and fourth stage, it needs to change its host from the middle host, snail to the final host, rat. However, the mechanism involved in this change remains unclear. Methods: The transcriptome differences of the third and fourth stages of A. cantonensis were explored by next-generation Illumina Hiseq/Miseq sequencing in China, in 2018. Results: Overall, 137 956 488 clean reads and 20 406 213 373 clean bases of the two stages larvae were produced. Based on the queries against the Gene Ontology (GO), NCBI non-redundant protein sequences (Nr), Swissprot, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) databases, 14 204 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were predicted. GO enrichment analysis revealed 5660 DEGs with the top s categories as followings: biological process (GO:0008150, related to 5345 DEGs), cellular component (GO:0005575, related to 5297 DEGs), molecular function (GO:0003674, related to 5290 DEGs). In KEGG enrichment analysis, 116 genes were related to oxidative phosphorylation and 49 genes involved in the glycolytic process. Conclusion: Metabolism changes, especially oxidative phosphorylation and glycolysis, might play a key role in A. cantonensis infection of its final rat host. Numerical simulations were conducted to determine the impact of the Tian Shan Mountains and Pamir Plateau on arid conditions over interior Asia. These topographies are crucial for the differentiation of the precipitation seasonality among the subregions in the west, east, and north of the Tian Shan Mountains and Pamir Plateau, namely, arid central Asia, the Tarim basin, and the northern plains. Before the uplift of the Tian Shan Mountains and Pamir Plateau, the precipitation seasonality over the east arid subregion was consistent with that over the west arid subregion, with maximum rainfall in spring and winter and minimum rainfall in summer. After the uplift of the Tian Shan Mountains and Pamir Plateau, the original precipitation seasonality in the west was strengthened. As the precipitation in the east arid subregion increased in summer but decreased in winter and spring, the precipitation seasonality in the east changed to peak in summer, while the precipitation in the north arid subregion showed the opposite change. The precipitation alteration corresponded well with the change of vertical motion. With the modulation of atmospheric stationary waves, the remote East Asian monsoon was also impacted. Though enhanced southerly wind blew over East Asia, the monsoon precipitation over the east coast of China and subtropical western Pacific Ocean was significantly reduced as an anticyclonic circulation appeared. Rainfall in southern China reaches its annual peak in early summer (May-June) with strong interannual variability. Using a combination of observational analysis and numerical modeling, the present study investigates the leading modes of this variability and its dynamic drivers. A zonal dipole pattern termed the southern China Dipole (SCD) is found to be the dominant feature in early summer during 1979-2014, and is closely related to a low-level anomalous anticyclone over the Philippine Sea (PSAC) and a Eurasian wave-train pattern over the mid-high latitudes. Linear regressions based on observations and numerical experiments using the CAM5 model suggest that the associated atmospheric circulation anomalies in early summer are linked to decaying El Niño-Southern Oscillation-like sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the tropical Pacific, basin-scale SST anomalies in the tropical Indian Ocean, and meridional tripole-like SST anomalies in the North Atlantic in the previous winter to early summer. The tropical Pacific and Indian Ocean SST anomalies primarily exert an impact on the SCD through changing the polarity of the PSAC, while the North Atlantic tripole-like SST anomalies mainly exert a downstream impact on the SCD by inducing a Eurasian wave-train pattern. The North Atlantic tripole-like SST anomalies also make a relatively weak contribution to the variations of the PSAC and SCD through a subtropical teleconnection. Modeling results indicate that the three-basin combined forcing has a greater impact on the SCD and associated circulation anomalies than the individual influence from any single oceanic basin. Background: Allergic rhinitis is regarded as an imbalanced Th1/Th2 cell-mediated response. The present study used microarray analysis to compare gene expression levels between allergic rhinitis patients before and after a series of acupoint herbal plaster applications. Methods: In this experimental pilot study, volunteers experiencing sneezing, runny nose, and congestion for more than 9 months in the year following initial diagnoses were included after diagnostic confirmation by otolaryngologists to exclude patients with sinusitis and nasal polyps. Patients with persistent allergic rhinitis each received four acupoint herbal plaster treatments applied using the moxibustion technique. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using the Rhinitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ). Peripheral blood samples were analyzed using an ImmunoCAP Phadiatop test, and patients were classified as phadiatop (Ph)-positive or -negative. Microarray results were analyzed for genes that were differentially expressed between (1) Ph-positive and -negative patients treated with herbal plaster; and (2) before and after herbal plaster treatment in the Ph-positive patient group. Unsupervised and supervised methods were used for gene-expression data analysis. Results: Nineteen Ph-positive and four Ph-negative participants with persistent allergic rhinitis were included in the study. RQLQ results indicated that the 19 Ph-positive volunteers experienced improvement in six of seven categories following acupoint herbal plaster treatments, whereas the four Ph-negative participants reported improvement in only two categories. Hierarchical clustering and principle component analysis of the gene expression profiles of Ph-positive and --negative participants indicated the groups exhibited distinct physiological responses to acupoint herbal treatment. Evaluation of gene networks using MetaCore identified that the "Immune response_IL-13 signaling via JAK-STAT" and the "Inflammation_Interferon signaling" were down- and up-regulated, respectively, among Ph-positive subjects. Conclusions: In this preliminary study, we find that the IL-13 immune response via JAK-STAT signaling and interferon inflammation signaling were down- and upregulated, respectively, in the Ph-positive group. The extended Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence and Technology (STIRPAT) model has been applied to analyzing the relationship between CO2 emissions from power industry and the influential factors for the period from 1997 to 2020. The two groups found through partial least square (PLS) regularity test show two important areas for CO2 emissions reduction from the power industry: economic activity and low-carbon electric technology. Moreover, considering seven influential factors (economic activity, population, urbanization level, industrial structure, electricity intensity, generation structure, and energy intensity) that affect the power CO2 emissions and the practical situation in the power sector, possible development scenarios for the 13th Five-Year Plan period were designed, and the corresponding CO2 emissions from the power sector for different scenarios were estimated. Through scenario analysis, the potential mitigation of emissions from power industry can be determined. Moreover, the CO2 emissions reduction rates in the different scenarios indicate the possible low-carbon development directions and policies for the power industry during the period of the 13th Five Year Plan. Corylopsis sinensis Hemsl. is a deciduous shrub endemic to China, which is a valuable medicinal and ornamental species. In this study, we report the complete chloroplast genome sequence of C. sinensis, providing a genomic basis for future research. The chloroplast genome is 159,419 base pairs (bp) in length, with a large single-copy (LSC) region of 88,152 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of of 18,701 bp, and two inverted repeat (IR) regions of 26,283 bp. The overall GC content is 38.0% and the chloroplast genome encodes 113 unique genes including 79 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes. The phylogenetic results show that C. sinensis is sister to C. spicata. These results of C. sinensis will improve our understanding of the evolution of Corylopsis and Hamamelidaceae. Background: Visceral fat area (VFA), a novel sex-specific index for visceral fat obesity (VFO) might play a major role in the development of vitamin D deficiency. However, the association between VFA and vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency in Chinese population is less clear. The aim of this study was to explore the population-level association between VFA and vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency among Chinese men and women. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 1105 adults aged 20-70 years living in Tianjin who were randomly selected and medically examined. All subjects underwent the bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) method to estimate the VFA. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH) D3) level was assayed by the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method and defined insufficiency and deficiency following recommended cutoffs. The association between VFA and vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency was estimated using binary regression analysis. Results: The total prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency (25(OH) D3: 20-29 ug/L) and deficiency (25(OH) D3 < 20 ug/L) were 26.60 % and 24.89 %, respectively. Significant negative association was observed for VFA with serum 25(OH) D3 levels in men and pre-menopausal women (P < 0.05), not in post-menopausal women (P > 0.05). Moreover, increased VFA was observed to be associated with higher vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency risk with a positive dose-response trend (P for trend < 0.001). As compared to individuals with the lowest VFA, those who had the highest VFA were at 4.9-fold risk of vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency [95 % confidence interval (95 % CI): 1.792-13.365] in men and 1.8-fold risk of vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency (95 % CI: 1.051-3.210) in pre-menopausal women, but not in post-menopausal women [odds ratio (OR) (95 % CI): 2.326(0.903-5.991)]. Conclusions: These results suggest that higher VFA increases the risk of vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency in men and pre-menopausal women, but not in post-menopausal women. VFA is a better and convenience surrogate marker for visceral adipose measurement and could be used in identifying the risk of vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency in routine health examination. Accurate forecasting of fossil fuel energy consumption for power generation is important and fundamental for rational power energy planning in the electricity industry. The least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) is a powerful methodology for solving nonlinear forecasting issues with small samples. The key point is how to determine the appropriate parameters which have great effect on the performance of LSSVM model. In this paper, a novel hybrid quantum harmony search algorithm-based LSSVM (QHSA-LSSVM) energy forecasting model is proposed. The QHSA which combines the quantum computation theory and harmony search algorithm is applied to searching the optimal values of σ and C in LSSVM model to enhance the learning and generalization ability. The case study on annual fossil fuel energy consumption for power generation in China shows that the proposed model outperforms other four comparative models, namely regression, grey model (1, 1) (GM (1, 1)), back propagation (BP) and LSSVM, in terms of prediction accuracy and forecasting risk. Abstract: Recent research has demonstrated the importance of institutional quality at the country level for both the volume of trade and the ability to trade in differentiated goods that rely on contract enforcement. This paper takes advantage of cross-provincial variation in institutional quality in China, and export data that distinguishes between foreign and domestic exporters and processing versus ordinary trade, to show that institutional quality is a significant factor in determining Chinese provincial export patterns. Institutions matter more for processing trade and more for foreign firms, just as we would expect from a greater reliance on contracts in these cases. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Sedum emarginatum Migo is a perennial herb endemic to China. Here, we assembled and characterized the complete chloroplast genome of S. emarginatum using Illumina sequencing data. Our assembled chloroplast genome is 149,188 base pairs (bp) in length, containing a large single-copy (LSC) region of 81,399 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 16,721 bp, and two inverted repeat (IR) regions of 25,534 bp. Aims To evaluate the clinical and radiographic results of dental implant placed using osteotome sinus floor elevation ( OSFE) with and without simultaneous grafting. Materials & Methods Forty-five patients were randomly assigned into two groups: Group1: OSFE with deproteinized bovine bone mineral ( DBBM) mixed with autogenous bone chips, and Group2: OSFE without grafting. The endo-sinus bone gain ( ESBG) was assessed on radiographs at 6, 12, 24, 36 months following surgery as primary outcome measurement. Implant survivals and marginal bone loss ( MBL) were assessed as secondary outcome measurements. Results Twenty-one implants in Group1 and 20 implants in Group2 were analysed. The residual bone height ( RBH) was 4.63 ± 1.31 mm in average (4.67 ± 1.18 mm for Group1 and 4.58 ± 1.47 mm for Group2). The 3-year cumulative survival rates of implants were 95.2% for Group1 and 95.0% for Group2. The ESBG in Group1 reduced from 5.66 ± 0.99 mm at 6 months to 3.17 ± 1.95 mm at 36 months, whereas the ESBG in Group2 increased from 2.06 ± 1.01 mm at 6 months to 3.07 ± 1.68 mm at 36 months. The MBL after 3 years was 1.33 ± 0.46 mm in Group1 and 1.38 ± 0.23 mm in Group2. Conclusions OSFE and simultaneous implant installation with and without grafting both resulted in predictable results. The distributions and effects of 31 selected endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCS) in two drinking water factories were analyzed in this study. The distributions of EDCS were analyzed by solid phase extraction (SPE) combined with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The concentrations of these EDCS were from lower than the LOD (limit of detection) to 23.13 ng L-1 in the samples; most of them were lower than 1 ng L-1. The highest concentration (23.13 ± 1.45 ng L-1) was detected in the raw water. Twenty-six chemicals were found in the raw water and only five in the finished water of drinking water factory A, while 25 chemicals were detected in the raw water and two in the finished water of drinking water factory B. The results indicate that most of the EDCs can be removed by the water treatment process. In the advanced treatment process, the ozonation processes have the highest removal efficiency. Separate analyses in May and September show similar results. Apart from the chemical analysis, yeast strain transformed when the estrogen receptor α (ERα) gene was employed to test the estrogenic effects of the water samples. Objective. To investigate the effects of modified Hungqi Guizhi Wuwu Tang (MHGWT), a formula that comprises Chinese medicinal herbs, in relieving neuropathic pain in diabetics. Method. Between March 2008 and April 2009, 112 participants were randomly assigned to either the MHGWT group, whose members received MHGWT (n = 56), or the control group, whose members received a placebo (n = 56). Diabetic neuropathic pain (DNP) was rated using the 15-item Short-Form Brief Pain Inventory (SF-BPI), the 17-item Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), the 13-item Modified Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MMNSI), and the 36-item "SF-36." Nerve conduction studies (NCSs) were performed before and after treatment. Results. After 12 weeks of treatment, the SF-MPQ and SF-BPI scores of the MHGWT group were significantly (P < 0.05) reduced and a significant difference between the groups was observed (P < 0.05). The levels of NCS in the MHGWT group were nonsignificantly (P > 0.05) reduced, and no significant difference in NCS level was observed between the groups (P > 0.05). Conclusions. Abstract: A novel analytical method employing MCX (mixed-mode cationic exchange) based solid phase extraction (SPE) coupled with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) was developed to detect 31 endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) in surface water samples simultaneously. The target EDCs belong to five classes, including seven estrogens, eight androgens, six progesterones, five adrenocortical hormones and five industrial compounds. In order to simultaneously concentrate the target EDCs and eliminate matrix interferences in the water samples, MCX SPE cartridges were employed for SPE, and then followed by a simple and highly efficient three-step sequential elution procedure. Two electrospray ionization (ESI) detection modes, positive (ESI+) and (ESI−), were optimized for HPLC–MS/MS analysis to obtain the highest sensitivity for all the EDCs. The limits of detection (LODs) were 0.02–1.9ngL−1, which are lower than or comparable to these reported in references. Wide linear ranges (LOD-100ngL−1 for ESI+ mode, and LOD-200ngL−1 for ESI− mode) were obtained with determination coefficients (R 2) higher than 0.99 for all the compounds. With five internal standards, good recoveries (84.4–103.0%) of all the target compounds were obtained in selected surface water samples. The developed method was successfully applied to investigate the EDCs occurrence in the surface water of Shanghai by analyzing surface water samples from 11 sites. The results showed that nearly all the target compounds (30 in 31) were present in the surface water samples of Shanghai, of which three industrial compounds (4-t-OP, BPA, and BPF) showed the highest concentrations (median concentrations were 11.88–23.50ngL−1), suggesting that industrial compounds were the dominating EDCs in the surface water of Shanghai, and much more attention should be paid on these compounds. Our present research demonstrated that SPE with MCX cartridges combined with HPLC–MS/MS was convenient, efficient and reliable for multiclass analysis of EDCs in surface water. A relatively cold period, the ‘Little Ice Age’ (LIA), just prior to the current warm period, has been documented from many regions of the globe. However, hydrological changes (wet/dry conditions) during the LIA appear to be very different across different climatic regimes, suggesting that the position, strength and/or pattern of atmospheric circulation could have changed significantly in the past. Therefore, paleohydrological studies may have some implications for potential future hydrological changes in an anticipated warming world. In this study, we investigated hydrological changes over the last ~800 years in the arid Tarim Basin, northwestern China. We used carbon isotopes of plant remains (mainly leaves) from a 10.5 m long aeolian sand sediment section to evaluate changes in dry/wet conditions. The average value of carbon isotopes of plant remains during the LIA period (~AD 1490 to 1890) is −26.0‰, ranging from −28.2‰ to −23.6‰, much lower than values before (average of −24.3‰, from −25.5‰ to −22.4‰) and after this period (average of −22.8‰, −24.6‰ to −21.6‰). Although other environmental factors could also affect carbon isotopes to some degree, such consistent, large negative isotopic excursions of up to 6‰ strongly suggest a wetter climatic condition in the study area at that time, which is also consistent with two silty clay layers, indicating a wet depositional environment, found around AD 1560 and AD 1625 during the LIA period. This inference is consistent with previous studies suggesting a relatively wet period during the LIA in the Tarim Basin and possibly extending to the western central Asia region, but appears to be opposite to hydrological changes in regions that are today dominated by Asian monsoon systems. This pattern of regional hydrological changes may be related to possible changes in the trajectory or strength of the westerlies and/or the orographic effect in this region, as previous studies suggested. PURPOSE: To investigate the distribution of sensory nerve fibers in the tissue of peri-implant bone and to study the reconstruction procedure of somatosensory evoked potentials of unloaded dental implant. METHODS: The bilateral 2nd, 3rd and 4th mandibular premolars and the 1st molars were extracted from 3 beagle dogs. Three months later, 4 screw-type implants were inserted. Then 1, 6 and 12 weeks later, the sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) tests were performed. The stimulating electrode was connected to the implant, and the recording electrodes were fixed on the inferior alveolar nerve stem to record the amplitude of SNAP. Then the dogs were sacrificed, and the specimens were prepared for immunohistochemical examination. The SNAP results were statistically analyzed using SPSS17.0 software package. RESULTS: SNAP of the inferior alveolar nerve stem could be recorded following stimulations to each implant. The difference in SNAP amplitudes between the 1-week group and the other two groups was significant (P<0.05). But there was no significant difference between the 6-week and 12-week group. Some NFP-positive nerve fibers were found in the tissues of peri-implant bone. These fibers localized in both the bone marrow space and in the peri-implant fibrous tissues. CONCLUSIONS: Neuroreceptors do exist in the tissue of pert-implant bone, but much less than the periodontal ligament. These neuroreceptors could receive electrical stimulus then evoke SNAP of the inferior alveolar nerve stem. In unloaded condition, the reconstruction of never endings in the pert-implant bone tissue is apparently time-dependent. PURPOSE: To evaluate 7-year clinical application of Straumann implant treatment. METHODS: 5532 non-submerged Straumann implants were placed from july 2000 to december 2006 at the department of implantology, Ninth People's Hospital, College of Stomatology, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The average age of 2449 patients was 40.2 years (16 to 87 years) and healing period was 5.39 months (1.75 to 23.75 months). A total of 2710 prostheses were accomplished, including 2640 fixed partial prostheses, 52 implant supported overdentures and 18 implant supported full arch fixed protheses. Patients were recalled 6 months after restoration and later annual follow-up. Clinical and X-ray examinations were performed during the follow-up period. RESULTS: Among the 91 failed implants, 59 implants were failed in healing period and considered early failures. The survival rate was 98.36%. CONCLUSION: Prosthetic restoration of partially edentulous and edentulous patients with the Straumann implant system can be described as a reliable and efficient therapy in the long term. Levels of genetic differentiation, gene flow, and genetic structure of three indigenous cattle populations (Luxi, Bohai, and Minnan) and two reference cattle populations (Chinese Holstein and Qinhai yak) in China were estimated using the information from 12 microsatellites, and 141 microsatellite alleles were identified. The mean number of alleles per locus ranged from 2.9005 in yak to 4.9722 in Holstein. The observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.5325 (yak) to 0.7719 (Holstein); 29 private alleles were detected. The global heterozygote deficit across all populations amounted to 58.5% (p < 0.001). The overall significant (p < 0.001) deficit of heterozygotes because of inbreeding within breeds amounted to 43.2%. The five cattle populations were highly differentiated (Fst = 26.9%,p < 0.001) at all loci. The heterozygote deficit within the population was highest in Luxi cattle and lowest in yak. The average number of effective migrants exchanged per generation was highest (1.149) between Luxi and Holstein, and lowest (0.509) between Luxi and yak. With the application of prior population information, cluster analysis achieved posterior probabilities from 91% to 98% of correctly assigning individuals to populations. Combining the information of cluster analysis, gene flow, and Structure analysis, the five cattle populations belong to three genetic clusters, a taurine (Luxi and Chinese Holstein), a zebu (Bohai and Minnan), and a yak cluster. For improving the environmental quality and ensuring supply of wood and non-timber forest products, many forests have been planted in plain areas of China. Scientists have studied their benefits, almost all of the approaches were based on fixed-point data, and few was considered on the non-efficient factors and temporal scale effects. This paper studies the positive and negative benefits at a large temporal scale, and the effects of plain afforestation on stockbreeding and rural economy. The benefits of plain afforestation, correlation coefficiency of agroforestry and production factors are analyzed via stochastic frontier modeling in Huanghuaihai Plain Area of China; elastic coefficient of agroforestry, husbandry, farming, and total output of agricultural sector are calculated through adopting partial differential equation. Some conclusions can be drawn that, plain forests have an important effect on the development of plain agriculture. But shelterbelts and small-scale forests have different effect on the development of agricultural economy. Shelterbelts have negative effect on the industries, but small-scale forest has positive effect. The utilization of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is becoming an attractive navigation approach for geostationary orbit (GEO) satellites. A high-sensitivity receiver compatible with Global Position System (GPS) developed by the United States and BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) developed by China has been used in a GEO satellite named TJS-5 to demonstrate feasibility of real-time navigation. According to inflight data, the GNSS signal characteristics including availability, position dilution of precision (PDOP), carrier-to-noise ratio (C/N0), observations quantity and accuracy are analyzed. The mean number of GPS and GPS + BDS satellites tracked are 7.4 and 11.7 and the mean PDOP of GPS and GPS + BDS are 10.24 and 3.91, respectively. The use of BDS significantly increases the number of available navigation satellites and improves the PDOP. The number of observations with respect to C/N0 is illustrated in detail. The standard deviation of the pseudorange noises are less than 4 m, and the corresponding carrier phase noises are mostly less than 8 mm. We present the navigation performance using only GPS observations and GPS + BDS observations combination at different weights through comparisons with the precision reference orbits. When GPS combined with BDS observations, the root mean square (RMS) of the single-epoch least square position accuracy can improve from 32.1 m to 16.5 m and the corresponding velocity accuracy can improve from 0.238 m/s to 0.165 m/s. The RMS of real-time orbit determination position accuracy is 5.55 m and the corresponding velocity accuracy is 0.697 mm/s when using GPS and BDS combinations. This work investigated the behaviors of seven glucocorticoids, eight androgens, and nine progestogens compared to six estrogens in a municipal sewage treatment plant (STP) in Beijing, China. Among all of the hormones considered, androgens were the dominant steroids detected in all samples (total concentrations up to 10 216 ± 912 ng/L for influents, 171 ± 10 ng/L for effluents, and 647 ± 52 ng/g for dehydrated sludge samples), followed by estrogens (102 ± 8 ng/L, 14 ± 2 ng/L, and 14 ± 1 ng/g), progestogens (57 ± 6 ng/L, 8 ± 2 ng/L, and 13 ± 3 ng/g), and glucocorticoids (42±2 ng/L, 0.7 ± 0.1 ng/L, and 1.2 ± 0.3 ng/g). With the exception of 19-nor-4-androstene-3,17-diol (NAD, 67%), removal rates for androgens were relatively high (98-99%), while those for glucocorticoids, estrogens, and all progestogens except 6α-methylhydroxyprogesterone (MHPT) were 85-99%, 78-99%, and 73-96%, respectively. Glucocorticoids, androgens, and progestogens were mainly removed by degradation as with estrogens, while different behaviors were observed in the aerated grit chamber, anaerobic tank, anoxic tank, and aerobic tank units. Many of the detected glucocorticoids, androgens, and progestogens were eliminated in the anaerobic tank, but estrogens were largely degraded in the aerobic one. Scientists have become increasingly concerned about the occurrence of antibacterial resistance in the environment. In this study, Escherichia coli resistant to one or more antibiotics among nine antibiotics was screened from Wenyu River Basin in Beijing, China, with mean frequency of 48.7 ± 8.7% of 388 isolates in summer and 47 ± 6% of 236 isolates in winter. The mean multiantibiotic resistance (MAR) index in summer was 0.11 ± 0.03, slightly lower than that (0.14 ± 0.04) in winter. Most frequent resistance appeared for sulfonamides, tetracycline, and ampicillin. The distribution of 20 tetracycline, three sulfonamide, and three β-lactam resistance genes was assessed in the resistant isolates. While 97% of the ampicillin (AMP) resistant mechanism could be explained by the resistance gene TEM, 90% of the tetracycline (TC) and 96% of the sulfonamide (SXT) resistances could be explained by tet(A), tet(B), tet(M), and their combinations and sul(I), sul(II), sul(III), and their combinations, respectively. tet(M), a tetracycline-resistant gene originally detected in Gram-positive bacteria, and its combinations with tet(A) or tet(B) were first detected in E. coli isolated from a natural river basin, suggesting that tet(M) in E. coli might have been transferred from other bacterial species through horizontal gene transfer, which was supported by the fact that no tet(M) was detected in the isolates of human and chicken sources, except for only one isolate from swine. The source of sulfonamide-resistant E. coli in the river was supposed to be mainly from humans, based on a comparison of the sulfonamide resistance genotypes in animals and humans. The Chinese Loess Plateau of central Asia is composed of interbedded loess and paleosol layers, deposited during glacial and interglacial cycles, respectively, during the past ~2.5 m.y. Understanding the provenance of loess is fundamental to reconstructing wind patterns during Quaternary glacial periods. We determined and compared U-Pb ages on zircon crystals from Loess Plateau strata and potential source areas. The results indicate that the loess was largely derived from the Qaidam Basin and the northern Tibetan Plateau to the west, both of which exhibit spatially extensive geomorphic landforms indicative of past (interpreted as pre-Holocene) wind erosion and/or deflation by westerly winds. This challenges the current paradigm that the loess of the Chinese Loess Plateau was largely sourced from deserts located to the northwest, as observed in the modern interglacial climate. We propose that during glacial periods, the mean annual positions of the polar jet streams were shifted equatorward, resulting in more southerly tracks for dust-generating storms and suppression of the East Asian monsoon by inhibiting the subtropical jet from shifting northward across the Tibetan Plateau. The modern Indian summer monsoon (ISM) is characterized by exceptionally strong interhemispheric transport, indicating the importance of both Northern and Southern Hemisphere processes driving monsoon variability. Here, we present a high-resolution continental record from southwestern China that demonstrates the importance of interhemispheric forcing in driving ISM variability at the glacial-interglacial time scale as well. Interglacial ISM maxima are dominated by an enhanced Indian tow associated with global ice volume minima. In contrast, the glacial ISM reaches a minimum, and actually begins to increase, before global ice volume reaches a maximum. We attribute this early strengthening to an increased cross-equatorial pressure gradient derived from Southern Hemisphere high-latitude cooling. Objective: To study the relationship between the changes of environment and the transmission of Schistosomiasis japonica after the construction of the Three Gorge Reservoir. Methods: On the basis of the predictive data on changes of water level and sediment in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River after the dam construction provided by the Yangtze River Committee on Water Conservancy, corresponding data were collected and analyzed. In order to understand the effects of changes of water level and sediment on Oncomelania hupensis, the intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum, field surveys and ecologically intimated experiments were done. The prevalence status and factors related to transmission were investigated by epidemiology, medical geography and public health. Results: Positive impact on control of schistosomiasis is that floods in the Yangtze River will occur less and will decrease the dispersal of snails and the chances of infection for humans and animals as well. Snail habitats’ beach will be reduced in the flushed area along the Yangtze River. Exploitation of beach and elimination of snails will benefit from the beach''s uplift in flushed area. The floods ahead of time in autumn will interfere with the development of snails. Negative impact is that the flushed beaches and migratory settlements at certain altitude may become snail habitats. So the reservoir area will be a potential transmission area of schistosomiasis due to dispersal of infectious resources and Oncomelania snails. The uprising of the water body level may cause the expending of the snail habitats in some places of Jianghan plain during the transition of spring to summer. The destruction of the embankments of the Dongting Lake will be put off by its delayed flush, which causes the beach in a situation of growing reed-grass or grass for a long time that benefits the reproduction of the snails. The chances for schistosome infection to humans and animals will be on the increase, because the water regression occurs ahead of time in the Dongting Lake beach in autumn. The distribution of snails will not be affected by the changes of water level in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River after the dam is built, but the flushed section in Anhui in the recent 80 years are suitable for the snails’ development. The environmental changes due to dam construction will not obviously affect the development of snails and the transmission of schistosomiasis in the Poyang Lake area. Conclusion: The construction of the huge dam and the formation of the Three Gorge Reservoir on the Yangtze River may have both positive and negative impact on schistosomiasis transmission and control. Dust storm originates from arid and semiarid areas and could cause worldwide lasting effects along varying trajectories. As an extreme weather hazard, dust storm is usually induced by strong winds. In this paper, an aerodynamic parameter, defined as the ratio between dust storm frequency (DSF) and strong wind frequency (SWF), was calculated for quantifying dust storm susceptibility (DSS). The characteristic value and temporal change of DSS in five typical land surface areas, including cultivated land, grassland, sand desert, Gobi desert, and salt crust, were analyzed with dust storm and strong wind records at 15 weather stations. The spatial distribution of DSS in the arid and semiarid regions of northern China was described using dust storm and strong wind records at 102 meteorological stations. There are positive correlations between SWF and DSF for any identical land surface type. Land surface conditions have a great influence on dust storm susceptibility. According to DSS value, the five land surface types can be divided into two categories: (1) Cultivated land and sand desert, with DSS between 0.64 and 0.53, about 2.6–10 times higher than that of the other three land surfaces, are prone to forming dust storm under strong wind conditions; (2) Gobi desert, grassland and salt crust, with average DSS from 0.06 to 0.2, exhibit lower probability of dust storm occurrence under strong wind conditions. The DSF in the surrounding areas of the arid Taklimakan desert in Xinjiang are much larger than SWF, and dust storms take place readily even at normal erosive wind conditions. The areas with high DSF are not spatially consistent with SWF distribution but more coincide with high DSS areas where sand deserts and farmland are concentrated. Magmatic rocks can reveal partial melting processes in the lower crust and mantle. Therefore, the petrogenesis of both ore-barren and ore-bearing magmatic rocks can provide key insights into the deep geological processes that control porphyry Cu–(Mo Au) deposits (PCDs). Here, we investigate the petrogenesis of potassic/ultrapotassic igneous rocks in the southwestern Yangtze Craton (SWYC) to constrain their magmatic sources and assess their role in the formation of PCDs. These igneous rocks can be divided into three suites, ore-barren granite porphyry, lamprophyre, and ore-bearing quartz monzonite. U Pb dating of zircons indicates that these potassic/ultrapotassic intrusions crystalized simultaneously between 35.4 and 33.6 Ma. The lamprophyres have low SiO 2 contents and high MgO and K 2 O contents, exhibiting an ultrapotassic affinity. They are depleted in high field strength elements (HFSEs; Nb, Ta, Zr, Hf, and Ti) and enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs; Rb, K, Sr, and Ba). The enriched Sr, Nd, and Hf isotopic compositions of the ore-barren lamprophyres suggest that they were derived from low-degree partial melting of lithospheric mantle that had been metasomatized by subduction-related fluids during the Proterozoic. The ore-barren granite porphyries have high SiO 2 and K 2 O contents, with high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic characteristics. These rocks have low MgO, Cr, Ni, and Co contents. All samples exhibit high Sr/Y ratios, and highly fractionated rare earth elements (REEs) patterns with weak Eu anomalies. Combined with their low total REE contents (75–81 ppm) and ε Hf (t) values, which are similar to Neoproterozoic granulite xenoliths, we conclude that the ore-barren porphyries are adakites derived from thickened Neoproterozoic lower crust. The ore-bearing intrusions show variable SiO 2 and high Na 2 O + K 2 O contents, plotting in the monzonite to quartz monzonite fields in a SiO 2 vs Na 2 O + K 2 O diagram. These samples have much higher total REE contents (346–671 ppm) than the ore-barren intrusions. The homogeneous Sr Nd isotopic compositions and linear trends on Harker diagrams suggest that the magma that formed the ore-bearing rocks underwent fractional crystallization of mainly amphibole and accessory minerals. Water contents are estimated to have been 9–12 wt% at 0.8 GPa on the basis of the retention of plagioclase and low zircon saturation temperatures, which suggests that the primitive magmas of the ore-bearing intrusions were derived from water-fluxed melting rather than dehydration melting. The additional water, required to promote water-fluxed melting, was probably derived from underplated poassic/ultrapotassic mafic magmas. The high total REE contents, Sr/Y and (La/Yb) N ratios indicate that the primitive magmas of ore-bearing intrusions were probably derived from partial melting of potassic/ultrapotassic lower crust, formed by the underplating of mantle-derived potassic/ultrapotassic magma. Background: Artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted clinical trial screening is a promising prospect, although previous matching systems were developed in English, and relevant studies have only been conducted in Western countries. Therefore, we evaluated an AI-based clinical trial matching system (CTMS) that extracts medical data from the electronic health record system and matches them to clinical trials automatically., Methods: This study included 1,053 consecutive inpatients primarily diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma who were referred to the liver tumor center of an academic medical center in China between January and December 2019. The eligibility criteria extracted from two clinical trials, patient attributes, and gold standard were decided manually. We evaluated the performance of the CTMS against the established gold standard by measuring the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and run time required., Results: The manual reviewers demonstrated acceptable interrater reliability (Cohen's kappa 0.65-0.88). The performance results for the CTMS were as follows: accuracy, 92.9-98.0%; sensitivity, 51.9-83.5%; specificity, 99.0-99.1%; PPV, 75.7-85.1%; and NPV, 97.4-98.9%. The time required for eligibility determination by the CTMS and manual reviewers was 2 and 150 h, respectively., Conclusions: We found that the CTMS is particularly reliable in excluding ineligible patients in a significantly reduced amount of time. The CTMS excluded ineligible patients for clinical trials with good performance, reducing 98.7% of the work time. Background: A lack of sleep or disorder in sleep-wake cycles has been associated with metabolic impairments. However, few studies have investigated the association between daytime napping duration and the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This study aimed to investigate the association of daytime napping duration with the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in a Chinese population., Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the Health Management Center of Nanfang Hospital, Guangdong Province. A total of 3363 participants aged 20-79 years were recruited and admitted from January 20, 2018, to October 16, 2020. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease was diagnosed using abdominal ultrasonography. The outcome was the association between daytime sleep duration and the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease., Results: Compared with non-nappers, long daytime nappers (≥ 60 min) were associated with a higher risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in the crude model (odds ratio 2.138; 95% confidence interval 1.88-2.61, P < 0.05) and in the multivariable adjustment model (odds ratio 2.211; 95% confidence interval 1.042-4.690, P < 0.05) after adjusting for demographic, educational, and metabolic risk factors. Background: Ageing and insulin resistant states such as diabetes mellitus frequently coexist and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease development among older adults. Here we investigate metabolic differences in amino acid profiles between ageing and diabetes mellitus, and their associations with cardiovascular function., Methods: In a group of community older adults we performed echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging as well as cross sectional and longitudinal metabolomics profiling based on current and archived sera obtained fifteen years prior to examination., Results: We studied a total of 515 participants (women 50%, n = 255) with a mean age 73 (SD = 4.3) years. Diabetics had higher alanine (562 vs 448, p < 0.0001), higher glutamate (107 vs 95, p = 0.016), higher proline (264 vs 231, p = 0.008) and lower arginine (107 vs 117, p = 0.043), lower citrulline (30 vs 38, p = 0.006) levels (μM) compared to non-diabetics. Over time, changes in amino acid profiles differentiated diabetic older adults from non-diabetic older adults, with greater accumulation of alanine (p = 0.002), proline (p = 0.008) and (non-significant) trend towards greater accumulation of glycine (p = 0.057) among the older diabetics compared to the older non-diabetics. However, independent of diabetes status, amino acids were associated with cardiovascular functions in ageing, [archived valine (p = 0.011), leucine (p = 0.011), archived isoleucine (p = 0.0006), archived serine (p = 0.008), archived glycine (p = 0.006) methionine (p = 0.003)] which were associated with impairments in E/A ratio., Conclusion: Markers of branched chain amino acids and one ‑carbon metabolism pathways were associated with changes in cardiovascular function in older adults regardless of diabetes status. However, nitrogen handling pathways were specifically altered among older adults with diabetes. This paper established the identification technology of the main root origin of three-year-old spring Panax notoginseng aiming at providing theoretical basis for the protection and traceability of geographical indication products of P. notoginseng. Forty-four samples of three-year-old spring P. notoginseng from Guangxi Baise, Yunnan Wenshan, Yunnan new cultivating regions. The stable isotopic ratios of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen were determined by elemental analysis and stable isotope mass spectrometer. Combined with Duncan multiple comparative analysis, fisher discriminant analysis and sequential discriminant analysis, a origin discriminant model for the main root of three-year-old spring P. notoginseng was established for 3 production areas of P. notoginseng. The geographical climate and environment of three production areas of P. notoginseng are obviously different. From Guangxi Baise-Yunnan Wenshan-Yunnan new cultivating regions, the longitude, average annual temperature and annual precipitation gradually decrease, and the elevation and latitude are increasing. The results of multiple comparative analysis showed that there were significant or very signi-ficant differences in the δ~(13)C,δ~(15)N,δ~2H,δ~(18)O of the main roots of P. notoginseng in three regions. The results of fisher's discriminant analysis and sequential discriminant analysis showed that the correct discriminant rates of the main roots of P. notoginseng for three regions were 80.05%,76.47% and 90.91%, respectively, based on four stable isotope ratios, with an average of 84.09%. Using stable isotope fingerprint and chemometrics method, we can distinguish the origin of the main raw materials and products of P. notoginseng.

Background: Accumulating evidence has revealed that dental anxiety (DA) is associated with pain and patient satisfaction related to dental procedures. However, relevant reports are limited and inconsistent in oral implant patients., Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dental anxiety, pain perception, and analyze their interrelationship in Chinese patients with oral implant surgery., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed according to the strengthening the reporting of observational studies in epidemiology (STROBE) guideline. Consecutive patients who received oral implant surgeries during February-March of 2018 in Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital were recruited. The modified dental anxiety scale and visual analog scale were used to evaluate the level of the patient's DA and pain perception. Multivariate logistic regression was applied to analyze the influence of DA on pain perception of patients during oral implant surgery., Results: The prevalences of moderate and high preoperative DA were 66.6% and 11.9% in Chinese patients with oral implant surgery, respectively. Seven points eight percent of patients experienced pain perception during surgery. The result of multiple logistic regression showed that there was no significant influence of moderate preoperative DA (OR = 2.0, 95%CI: 0.5-8.2) on pain perception. However, a significant influence of high preoperative DA (OR = 6.4, 95%CI: 1.3-30.8) was found on pain perception of patients with oral implant surgery. Significant influences of moderate perioperative DA (OR = 5.0, 95%CI: 1.1-22.9) and high perioperative DA (OR = 8.7, 95%CI: 1.1-69.9) were also found on pain perception of patients during oral implant surgery., Conclusions: The results of the study indicated that DA was very common in Chinese patients with oral implant surgery. Aims/introduction: Indian individuals are more insulin resistant (IR) than Chinese individuals, even among those with a non-obese body mass index (BMI). However, BMI often underestimates body fat in Indian individuals, and it remains unclear whether Indians would remain more IR than Chinese individuals when both BMI and body fat are equally matched., Materials and Methods: Using the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp with stable-isotope infusion, we comprehensively assessed IR between 13 non-obese Indian men with 13 Chinese men matched for age, BMI and body fat. We further compared the differences in insulin metabolic clearance rate (MCR) between the two groups and its relationship with various metabolic parameters. The response of lipid and amino acid metabolism to insulin stimulation was also evaluated using metabolomic profiling., Results: The rates of endogenous glucose production during fasting were similar, and endogenous glucose production was completely suppressed during insulin clamp for both ethnic groups. Glucose disappearance during insulin clamp was also similar between the two groups, even after accounting for differences in insulin concentration. Metabolomic profiles of amino acids and various acylcarnitines were similar during both fasting and insulin clamp. However, plasma insulin during clamp was significantly higher in Indian men, indicating that insulin MCR was lower. Insulin MCR correlated significantly with total adiposity and skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity., Conclusion: When equally matched for body fat, non-obese Indian men had similar skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity and endogenous glucose production to Chinese men. The effects of insulin on lipid and amino acid metabolism were also similar. Low insulin MCR is associated with greater adiposity and lower skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity., (© 2018 The Authors. Background: The serum metabolomic profile and its relationship to physiological changes during hyperthyroidism and restoration to euthyroidism are not known. This study aimed to examine the physiological, adipokine, and metabolomic changes that occur when subjects with Graves' disease transition from hyperthyroidism to euthyroidism with medical treatment., Methods: Chinese women between 21 and 50 years of age and with newly diagnosed Graves' disease attending the endocrine outpatient clinics in a single institution were recruited between July 2012 and September 2014. All subjects were treated with thioamides to achieve euthyroidism. Clinical parameters (body weight, body composition via bioelectrical impedance analysis, resting energy expenditure and respiratory quotient via indirect calorimetry, and reported total energy intake via 24 h food diary), biochemical parameters (thyroid hormones, lipid profile, fasting insulin and glucose levels), serum leptin, adiponectin, and metabolomics profiles were measured during hyperthyroidism and repeated in early euthyroidism., Results: Twenty four Chinese women with an average age of 36.3 ± 8.6 years were included in the study. The average duration of treatment that was required to reach euthyroidism for these subjects was 38 ± 16.3 weeks. There was a significant increase in body weight (52.6 ± 9.0 kg to 55.3 ± 9.4 kg; p < 0.001) and fat mass (14.3 ± 6.9 kg to 16.8 ± 6.5 kg; p = 0.005). There was a reduction in resting energy expenditure corrected for weight (28.7 ± 4.0 kcal/kg to 21.5 ± 4.1 kcal/kg; p < 0.001) and an increase in respiratory quotient (0.76 to 0.81; p = 0.037). Resting energy expenditure increased significantly with increasing free triiodothyronine levels (p = 0.007). Significant increases in total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were noted. There was no significant change in leptin levels, but adiponectin levels increased significantly (p = 0.018). Significant reductions in fasting C2, medium-chain, long-chain, and total acylcarnitines were observed, but no changes in the fat-free mass, branched chain amino acid levels, or insulin sensitivity during recovery from hyperthyroidism were noted., Conclusions: Serum metabolomics profile changes complemented the physiological changes observed during the transition from hyperthyroidism to euthyroidism. This study provides a comprehensive and integrated view of the changes in fuel metabolism and energy balance that occur following the treatment of hyperthyroidism.

Background: Nowadays, short dental implants are being increasingly applied in extremely resorbed posterior regions. The recent studies have indicated that short implants present a similar success rate to conventional implants. It is assumed that short implants can avoid additional surgical morbidity and are less technically demanding. However, high-quality evidence (≥ Ib: evidence from at least one randomized controlled trial) on comparing the clinical outcome of short implants and longer implants combined with osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE) technique is limited., Methods/design: The proposed study is designed as a prospective single-center, three-arm parallel group, randomized controlled trial. We plan to enroll 150 patients in need of dental implant treatment in the posterior maxilla. The inclusion criteria include: age ≧ 18 years, partial edentulism in the posterior maxilla for at least 3 months from tooth loss, residual bone height ranging from 6 to 8 mm, sufficient bone width (≥ 6 mm) in the edentulous region. The patients will be divided into three groups according to a table of random numbers: group 1: short implants (6 mm) alone; group 2: short implants (8 mm) combined with osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE); group 3: standard implants (10 mm) combined with OSFE. The assignment will be concealed from the clinical operators until the beginning of implant surgery. The outcome examiners and patients will be kept blinded to the assignment. Implant survival rates, implant success rates, complications, resonance frequency analysis (RFA) measurements, marginal bone level, treatment time and patient-reported outcome (visual analogue scale for intraoperative discomfort and postoperative pain) will be recorded. Clinical re-evaluations will be performed at 12, 24, 36 and 60 months after crown placement., Discussion: The results of the trial will support better decision-making for dental implant treatment in atrophic maxillary ridges. If favorable, the use of short implants may avoid adjunct procedures used for implant insertion, thus reducing operative time, complexity and postoperative discomfort., Trial Registration: Clinicaltrials.gov identifier: NCT02350075 (registered on 17 February 2015).

The distributions and effects of 31 selected endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in two drinking water factories were analyzed in this study. The distributions of EDCs were analyzed by solid phase extraction (SPE) combined with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The concentrations of these EDCs were from lower than the LOD (limit of detection) to 23.13 ng L (- 1) in the samples; most of them were lower than 1 ng L (- 1). The highest concentration (23.13 ± 1.45 ng L (- 1)) was detected in the raw water. Twenty-six chemicals were found in the raw water and only five in the finished water of drinking water factory A, while 25 chemicals were detected in the raw water and two in the finished water of drinking water factory B. The results indicate that most of the EDCs can be removed by the water treatment process. In the advanced treatment process, the ozonation processes have the highest removal efficiency. Separate analyses in May and September show similar results. Apart from the chemical analysis, yeast strain transformed when the estrogen receptor α (ERα) gene was employed to test the estrogenic effects of the water samples. Due to the low concentrations of these EDCs, no significant estrogenic effects were found from the samples.

Background: Hypertensive target organ damage (TOD) is the main reason for mortality or disability in elderly hypertensive patients. The studies on TOD of hypertension in Asia, especially in Chinese elderly hypertensive patients, are very limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and correlative factors of TOD in older Chinese hypertensive inpatients., Methods: This is a retrospective survey and data were collected from the computerized medical files of hypertensive inpatients from January of 1993 to December of 2008. The analysis was done on 17 682 inpatients, aged 60 years or older, with a diagnosis of essential hypertension (EH). The evidence of hypertensive TOD and associated factors with TOD were collected., Results: The prevalence of any hypertensive target organ involvement among these subjects was high. In multivariable Logistic regressions adjusted for potentially confounding factors, older age, male gender, diabetes, EH grade 3, systolic blood pressure (SBP), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), were independently associated with coronary artery disease. Age, duration of EH, EH grade 3, SBP, pulse pressure (PP), and homocysteine (Hcy) were independently associated with cerebrovascular disease. Age, diabetes, duration of EH, EH grade 3, SBP, PP and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were independently associated with chronic kidney disease. Male gender, EH grade 3 and SBP were independently associated with aortic dissection., Conclusions: The prevalence of hypertensive TOD is high in older Chinese hypertensive inpatients. Various cardiovascular risk factors are associated with hypertensive TOD. The level of SBP and severe hypertension (grade 3 hypertension) are common independent risk factors of TOD.

To identify the genetic bases for nine metabolic traits, we conducted a meta-analysis combining Korean genome-wide association results from the KARE project (n = 8,842) and the HEXA shared control study (n = 3,703). We verified the associations of the loci selected from the discovery meta-analysis in the replication stage (30,395 individuals from the BioBank Japan genome-wide association study and individuals comprising the Health2 and Shanghai Jiao Tong University Diabetes cohorts). We identified ten genome-wide significant signals newly associated with traits from an overall meta-analysis. The most compelling associations involved 12q24.11 (near MYL2) and 12q24.13 (in C12orf51) for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, 2p21 (near SIX2-SIX3) for fasting plasma glucose, 19q13.33 (in RPS11) and 6q22.33 (in RSPO3) for renal traits, and 12q24.11 (near MYL2), 12q24.13 (in C12orf51 and near OAS1), 4q31.22 (in ZNF827) and 7q11.23 (near TBL2-BCL7B) for hepatic traits. These findings highlight previously unknown biological pathways for metabolic traits investigated in this study.

Objective: To establish chromatographic fingerprint of Sichuan native medicinal plant Alisma plantago-aquatica by RP-HPLC for the quality control., Method: The gradient elution mode was applied in chromatographic separation, and data were analyzed by "Computer Aided Similarity Evaluation" software to compare the quality of A. plantago-aquatica samples from different habitats., Result: The HPLC chromatographic fingerprinting of A. plantago-aquatica with 26 characteristic peaks was established from 17 lots of A. plantago-aquatica samples, peak 16 and 22 were identified as 24-acetyl alisol A and 23-acetyl alisol B, respectively., Conclusion: The chromatographic fingerprinting of A. plantago-aquatica with high specificity can be used to control its quality and assure lot to lot consistency. The RP-HPLC fingerprint method is repeatable, feasible in analysis of A. plantago-aquatica.

According to the protocol of the national surveillance project, longitudinal observation of the endemic situation of schistosomiasis japonica in China has been carried out at 20 sentinel surveillance sites, commencing in 2000. After four years of surveillance, the infection rate of Schistosoma japonicum gradually decreased in seven sentinel sites. In 10 sites, infection rates remained relatively stable over time, while there was a marked increase in one site. No clear trend became apparent in the remaining two sites. Significant reductions of densities of living intermediate host snails and infected snails were noted in only two sites. In turn, the endemic situation was not well controlled in most of the other sentinel sites. The infection cattle rate fluctuated yearly in the majority of the sites and maintained a high level. During the four years of surveillance, acute cases of schistosomiasis japonica among humans were found in each of the yearly cross-sectional surveys, and the number of patients with advanced schistosomiasis did not change significantly. The surveillance results obtained thus far indicate that current control strategies continue to reduce morbidity due to schistosomiasis. However, concerted control efforts must continue for a long time and the surveillance of intermediate host snail and animal reservoirs (e.g. cattle) should be strengthened.

For improving the environmental quality and ensuring supply of wood and non-timber forest products, many forests have been planted in plain areas of China. Scientists have studied their benefits, almost all of the approaches were based on fixed-point data, and few was considered on the non-efficient factors and temporal scale effects. This paper studies the positive and negative benefits at a large temporal scale, and the effects of plain afforestation on stockbreeding and rural economy. The benefits of plain afforestation, correlation coefficiency of agroforestry and production factors are analyzed via stochastic frontier modeling in Huanghuaihai Plain Area of China; elastic coefficient of agroforestry, husbandry, farming, and total output of agricultural sector are calculated through adopting partial differential equation. Some conclusions can be drawn that, plain forests have an important effect on the development of plain agriculture. But shelterbelts and small-scale forests have different effect on the development of agricultural economy. Shelterbelts have negative effect on the industries, but small-scale forest has positive effect. On the whole, contribution of forest resource to value of animal husbandry and gross production value of agriculture is positive, and to the value of farming is negative.
