The H9N2 subtype of avian influenza virus (H9N2 AIV) has caused significant losses in chicken flocks throughout China. Our previous research has shown that field isolates of H9N2 underwent antigenic drift to evolve into distinct groups with significant antigenic divergence from the commercially available vaccines. The present study sought to identify which single mutations that have naturally appeared in isolates from the past 5 years have driven antigenic drift. Six high‐frequency mutation sites in/near the receptor binding site region were screened by comparing amino acid alignments of the H9N2 AIVs isolated from China between 2014 and 2019. Two substitutions (A168N and D201G) were demonstrated to have a significant impact on the antigenicity but did not change the growth kinetics of the virus. It is worth noting that the D201G substitution not only significantly changed the antigenicity but also caused immune escape against the parental virus. In conclusion, A168N and D201G substitution are newly discovered determinants that can significantly change the antigenicity of H9N2 AIV, which should be tracked during outbreaks. Global responses to the hotly debated China-Africa ivory trade in the past decade offer an entry point to examine whether and how African elephants have come to matter in China ethically. This article highlights the complexity of more-than-human ethics across geographic spaces and politico-cultural boundaries. We focus on the pivotal roles of conservationists who are embedded in multispecies relations on a transnational scale and who actively cultivate distant care for elephants. Reflecting upon a conservation trip named 'From Kenya to China', we demonstrate a simultaneous process through which the conservationists, on the one hand, have grown to realise different cultural contexts and regimes of values, while continuing to promote conservation ideologies and build human-nonhuman connections on the other. We argue that relational ethics in the more-than-human worlds across borders is not just about how we treat other species, but ultimately about how we treat other humans and how we educate 'others' about treating nonhumans. This article critically examines the role of edutainment – the combination of educational and entertainment activities – in intangible heritage preservation. Drawing upon fieldwork in southwest China's Guizhou province, the article focuses on a cultural park that packages traditional ethnic practices into cultural products and leisure experiences for public participation and display. I consider this site as an example of a new form of hybrid cultural venue that shares similarities with earlier models of theme parks and museums, but also differs from them in important ways. This article discusses the potentials and the limitations of using interactive and experiential elements for facilitating the dynamic safeguarding of intangible heritage in creative urban environments. I argue that edutainment offers new learning opportunities to a public audience and to younger generations, but it inevitably entails transformations of traditional cultural forms and practices. Objectives. To evaluate the role of short-term low-dose glucocorticoids in mild COVID-19 patients. Methods. We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional, single-center study in Kunming, China. A total of 33 mild COVID-19 cases were divided into two treatment groups (with and without glucocorticoids, methylprednisolone, were used in this setting), and the absolute value of peripheral blood lymphocyte count; CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+ T cell counts; and the time to achieve negative transformation of a nucleic acid pharyngeal swab were recorded. Peripheral blood lymphocyte and T cell counts were compared between the treatment group and 25 healthy individuals. At the point of time when there was a 50% accumulation conversion rate (positive to negative nucleic acid on pharyngeal swab), and the nucleic acid turned negative in half of the patients in two groups, the peripheral blood lymphocyte and T cell counts were compared between treatment groups. Results. The mean cumulative time for the 50% negative conversion rate of the nucleic acid in the pharyngeal swab was 17.7 ± 5.1 days and 13.9 ± 5.4 days in the glucocorticoid group and the nonglucocorticoid group, respectively. The absolute peripheral blood lymphocyte count and the T cell subset count in the glucocorticoid group were lower than those in the nonglucocorticoid group. When the nucleic acid turned negative in half of the patients, the absolute value of peripheral blood lymphocyte count and CD4+ T cells of the glucocorticoid group and the nonglucocorticoid group was not significantly different; the CD3+ and CD8+ T cells in the glucocorticoid group were lower than those in the nonglucocorticoid group. The absolute peripheral blood lymphocyte count, CD3+ T cells, and CD4+ T cells in the glucocorticoid group were lower than those of the healthy group during the whole disease period, and CD8+ T cells returned to normal at 19-21 days of the disease period. There was no significant difference between the nonglucocorticoid group and the healthy group for absolute peripheral blood lymphocyte and CD8+ T cells; moreover, CD3+ T cells and CD4+ T cells were lower in the nonglucocorticoid group than those in the healthy group from the day of admission to the 18th day and returned to normal at the period of 19-21 days. The absolute peripheral lymphocyte count (P = 0.048 , effect size d = 0.727) and T cell subset count (CD3: P = 0.042 , effect size d = 0.655 ; CD4: P < 0.01 , effect size d = 0.599 ; and CD8: P = 0.034 , effect size d = 0.550) in the nonglucocorticoid group were higher than those in the glucocorticoid group, and the difference between the groups was statistically significant. Conclusions. This study found that the use of short-term, low-dose glucocorticoids does not negatively influence the clinical outcome, without affecting the final clearance of viral nucleic acid in mild COVID-19 patients. Use of aerobic denitrifying consortia, as a new efficient tool for nitrogen removal, has attracted widespread attention because of their stable and efficient nitrogen removal ability. Yet, little attention has been given to highly efficient aerobic denitrifying consortia from mariculture environments. In this study, a natural aerobic denitrifying consortium, named C3, was obtained by an enrichment technique from a coastal mariculture area of Dongshan Bay of Fujian Province, China. In culture, it exhibited good and stable nitrate removing performance. Nitrogen mass balance indicated that 49.30% of the initial TN was converted into gaseous nitrogen and 49.63% was assimilated to biomass nitrogen. High-throughput sequencing and network analysis revealed that Pseudomonas and Fusarium were putative dominant aerobic denitrifying bacterial and fungal species, respectively, cooperating with Exophiala , Penicillium , Mortierella , Neocamarosporium , Neocosmospora , Sterigmatomyces , Thelebolus , Thermomyces , Cutaneotrichosporon and Gymnopilus to perform aerobic denitrification. In addition, four Pseudomonas strains have been successfully isolated from consortium C3, which supported the inference that Pseudomonas was the dominant contributor in the aerobic denitrifying consortium C3. These results will offer novel insights into aerobic denitrifying consortia in mariculture environments for biotechnological nitrogen pollution removal. • An aerobic denitrifying consortium C3 was screened through sub-cultures. • NO 3 − and TN removal efficiencies of C3 could reach 99.14% and 49.30%, respectively. • NO 3 − removal pathways of C3 were demonstrated by nitrogen mass balance. • Potential microbial cooperative interactions drove the nitrate removal process. • Dominant contribution of Pseudomonas in C3 was supported by the isolation of single strains. Thalassaemia is a typically monogenic disease caused by mutations or deletions in the globin gene and has a high prevalence in southern China. Prenatal screening for thalassaemia can be effective in reducing the incidence of thalassaemia. Haematologic parameters of pregnant thalassaemia carriers are diverse and potentially valuable for identifying different types of genotypes. By comparing and evaluating haematological parameters, formulas in the literature, we tried to reveal differences between pregnant women carrying different types of thalassaemia genes. The Mentzer formula (MCV/RBC) showed a strong ability to differentiate thalassaemia genotypes in pregnant women. In addition, combined with haemoglobin electrophoresis HbA2 can further distinguish the –α/αα, αTα/αα, –/αα, β+/N and β0/N groups. HbA2 divides them into two groups. Based on the Mentzer formula, we can further decide which type of thalassaemia to screen (α/β and the subgroups) for genotyping. Therefore, this simpler and more cost-effective workflow has great potential for application in screening pregnant women for thalassaemia carriers. What is already known on this subject? Currently, it is known that thalassaemia gene carriers have abnormal blood indicators. Many findings describe their important values in distinguishing thalassaemia and other blood diseases. They combined different metrics as an algorithm to distinguish thalassaemia and iron deficiency anaemia. Prenatal screening is an effective method to reduce the incidence of thalassaemia. The current main method is PCR. Due to technical and financial constraints, many backward places cannot use this technology. The necessity for prenatal screening for thalassaemia has been overlooked. Whatthe results of this study add? Among these algorithms, Mentzer formula revealed differences in haematological parameters during pregnancy between normal individuals and thalassaemia carriers. Combining the HbA2, thalassaemia carriers can be distinguished from normal individuals, including –α/αα, αTα/αα, –/αα, β0/N and β+/N. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? We provide another tool for these hospitals that donot have Hb electrophoresis test and PCR. Then the clinical doctor can get some evidence and suggest women go to another big hospital for essential tests. It is an excellent suggestion. Unique names have commonly been viewed as undesirable. However, our studies (total N = 6049) suggest the opposite: unique names are perceived as favourable to creativity in occupational contexts. Generally, people held a perception that unique‐named individuals are more creative (albeit less likable) and therefore more suitable for jobs requiring greater creativity (Studies 1–2). Accordingly, participants tended to select candidates with more unique names for creative positions (Study 3) and recommend more unique names to workers in creative jobs for a name change (Study 4). Furthermore, real‐world archival data revealed that artists (typical creative professions) tended to adopt more unique new names, which was replicated cross‐culturally in American, British, and Chinese samples (Study 5), and that Chinese movie directors with more unique names received higher evaluations for the movies they directed (Study 6). This article analyzes the contemporary salience of yuanshengtai, a Chinese concept that valorizes core features similar to those of “indigeneity,” including cultural distinctiveness and environmental stewardship of ethnic, rural peoples. Yuanshengtai deflects attention away from historically and politically contentious issues and transnational claims for rights that would call for official recognition of “indigenous peoples” by the Chinese state. Such a romanticized rhetoric instead helps reassert the polyethnic nation’s worthiness, mostly through cultural industries since the early 2000s. This article, based on interpretive readings and ethnographic observation, zeroes in on the example of Guizhou to explore how yuanshengtai has been widely constructed as an emergent eco-cultural brand through a combination of academic forums, media events, and cultural industry promotions. It argues that the construction and promulgation of yuanshengtai allows regional elites to reiterate local uniqueness and provincial identity while embracing the state’s agenda and global aspirations, precisely because yuanshengtai hinges upon the state-market mechanism in contemporary China. Mass media worldwide has contributed to increasing awareness of the illegal wildlife trade and its significant impact on wildlife conservation. We used mass media coverage as a proxy for macro‐level public opinion to analyze the media framing of elephant ivory in 6394 Chinese newspaper articles published from 2000 to 2021 and thus determine the effects of wildlife policies on public opinion. We focused on 2 events: the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) approval of China as a trading partner in the purchase and import of ivory stockpiles from Africa in July 2008 and the Chinese government's announcement of a domestic ivory ban in December 2016. Using latent Dirichlet allocation topic modeling, we identified 8 topics about elephant ivory and grouped them into 3 frames: ivory arts and culture, ivory crimes, and elephant conservation. Over the last 2 decades, topics related to ivory crimes remained the most prevalent in news articles. Topics about ivory arts and culture showed a significant shift in media salience before and after the 2 events (from 0.44 to 0.19 and from 0.08 to 0.15, respectively, p < 0.05), whereas the other 2 frames did not change significantly. Contrary to popular belief, our results indicated that Chinese macro‐level public opinion on ivory had become more negative following the CITES approval of ivory importation and less negative after the ivory ban announcement, at least for certain periods. The relationship between mass media, public opinion, and wildlife trade policies is complex and requires further examination of the sociopolitical dynamics that influence media narratives. Our results showed the value of topic modeling in monitoring and assessing media representations of wildlife issues in the era of big data. Conservationists should remain vigilant of mass media coverage and collaborate with media practitioners to produce comprehensive narratives on wildlife issues if resources permit. Dry-wet variations are a hot topic in global climate change research. Climate warming has led to the changes of evapotranspiration and precipitation are unevenly distributed, which have and will undoubtedly affect the dry-wet variations. In this study, based on daily climatic data from 423 meteorological stations in Southwest China (SWC), we analyze the trends and spatial variabilities of dry-wet climatic factors during 1961–2017, such as potential evapotranspiration (ET0), precipitation, and humid index (HI). Also, we investigate the possible influencing factors causing dry-wet variations. The results show that the arid, semi-arid, and humid regions decreased in 1991–2017 compared with those in 1961–1990, but the sub-humid regions increased. During 1961–2017, there was a noticeable decreasing trend in precipitation, while the variation trend in the ET0 was not apparent, which contributed to the dry climate in the SWC. The ET0 was most sensitive to temperature, followed by relative humidity. The contribution to the change of the ET0 was most remarkable for the change of temperature, followed by sunshine hours and wind speed. On the seasonal scale, the climate became drier in summer and autumn during 1961–2017, but there were no obvious wet-dry variations in spring and winter. Temperature and wind speed were the major factors causing the ET0 variation in spring and winter. Temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity were the critical factors contributing to the ET0 variation in autumn. while sunshine hours played a primary role in the ET0 variation in summer. On the monthly scale, the climate tended to be dry in most months, except for January, March, June, and July. Temperature was the most prominent contributor to the ET0 increase in most months. Also, wind speed and sunshine hours were the main factors of the ET0 reduction in October–May and June–September, respectively. Increasing evidence suggests that fungal communities are key components of biogeochemical cycles in coastal ecosystems. However, at a regional scale, the major drivers of the seasonal and spatial distribution of fungi in areas impacted by mariculture remain largely unknown. Intensive aquaculture takes place in Dongshan Bay of Fujian, China, a typical subtropical marine ecosystem with multiple environmental gradients extensively perturbed by anthropogenic activities. To better understand the consequences of mariculture on fungal community composition and activities, we simultaneously evaluated the temporal (four different seasons) and spatial dynamics in total (DNA) and active (RNA) fungal communities of Dongshan Bay in relation to several major physicochemical properties. Our results revealed that fungal communities in the Bay were highly diverse, but showed the ubiquitous dominance of Dikarya and the occasional predominance of Glomeromycota, Mucoromycota, Mortierellomycota, Chytridiomycota, Olpidiomycota, and Rozellomycota. Fungal diversity varied much more with season than with the degree of aquaculture activity, for both total and active communities. This notion is supported by co‐occurrence networks exhibiting a clear seasonal pattern. Furthermore, fungal community structure in coastal waters showed distinct relationships with environmental factors varying both with season and in space. For both total and active fungal communities, a combination of environmental variables including temperature, dissolved oxygen, and nitrite exhibited the greatest impact on community structure. Our study demonstrates a distinct spatiotemporal dynamics of both total and active fungi and provides a foundation to better understand the ecological roles of marine fungi in coastal ecosystems in relation to mariculture activities. Understanding local encounters with large carnivores is important for promoting sustainable coexistence. The use of smartphones and social media in geographically remote areas offers a novel avenue to study human–wildlife encounters from a local perspective. We conducted a content analysis of mobile videos on social media (n = 207) to characterize human encounters with snow leopards, gray wolves, and brown bears on the Tibetan Plateau in China. We also used ethnographic interviews to understand the backgrounds and motivations of videographers. Results show large carnivore encounters are not necessarily conflictual. Over half of encounters are neutral without observable interference between people and predators. The likelihood of a "negative encounter" is significantly associated with the target species, the distance between the videographer and the animal, the level of human influence in the surroundings, and the presence of other animals (i.e., dogs and livestock). Local Tibetan herders document unusual encounters with carnivores using videos for various reasons, but what is deemed unusual is context‐dependent and fluid. Our study demonstrates that social media videos can provide valuable insights into the diversity and complexity of human–wildlife interactions. Narcissism, characterized by grandiose self-image and entitled feelings to others, has been increasingly prevalent in the past decades. This study examined genetic and environmental bases of two dimensions of narcissism: intrapersonal grandiosity and interpersonal entitlement. A total of 304 pairs of twins from Beijing, China completed the Narcissistic Grandiosity Scale and the Psychological Entitlement Scale. Both grandiosity (23%) and entitlement (35%) were found to be moderately heritable, while simultaneously showing considerable non-shared environmental influences. Moreover, the genetic and environmental influences on the two dimensions were mostly unique (92–93%), with few genetic and environmental effects in common (7–8%). The two dimensions of narcissism, intrapersonal grandiosity and interpersonal entitlement, are heritable and largely independent of each other in terms of their genetic and environmental sources. These findings extend our understanding of the heritability of narcissism on the one hand. On the other hand, the study demonstrates the rationale for distinguishing between intrapersonal and interpersonal dimensions of narcissism, and possibly personality in general as well. Introduction: Over the past decade, numerous studies have described the types of pathogens and their antibiotic resistance patterns in patients with burn injuries in China; however, the findings have generally been inconsistent. We conducted a literature search and meta-analysis to summarize the infection spectra and antimicrobial resistance patterns in patients with burn injuries. Methods: We searched the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biomedical Literature, Wanfang, and Weipu databases for relevant articles published between January 2010 and December 2023. The DerSimonian–Laird random-effects model was used to estimate the proportions and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of pathogens among Chinese patients with burn injuries. Meta-regression analyses were performed to explore differences in the proportions of pathogens among different subgroups and their resistance patterns. This study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42024514386). Results: The database searches yielded 2017 records; after removing duplicates and conducting initial screening, 219 articles underwent full-text screening. Ultimately, 60 studies comprising a total of 62,819 isolated strains reported the proportions of pathogens in patients with burn injuries and were included in this meta-analysis. Meta-analyses were conducted on 18 types of pathogens. The most common pathogens causing infections in Chinese patients with burn injuries were Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Similar results were observed in the subgroup analysis focusing on wound infections. Since 2015, there has been a significant decrease in the proportion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (R2 = 4.89%) and a significant increase in the proportion of Klebsiella pneumoniae (R2 = 9.60%). In terms of antibiotic resistance, there has been a significant decrease in the resistance of Staphylococcus aureus to multiple antibiotics and an increasing trend in the resistance of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Conclusions: We systematically summarized the epidemiological characteristics and antibiotic resistance patterns of pathogens among individuals suffering from burns in China, thus providing guidance for controlling wound infections and promoting optimal empirical antimicrobial therapy. While many studies have examined the role of biochar in carbon (C) accrual in short-term scale, few have explored the decadal scale influences of biochar on non-biochar C, e.g., native soil organic C (SOC) and added substrate. To address this knowledge gap, soils were collected from decade-old biochar field trials located in the United Kingdom (Cambisol) and China (Fluvisol), with each site having had three application rates (25–30, 50–60 and 75–100 Mg ha−1) of biochar plus an unamended Control, applied once in 2009. We assessed physicochemical and microbial properties associated with sucrose (representing the rhizodeposits) mineralization and the priming effect (PE) on native SOC. Here, we showed both soils amended with biochar at the middle application rate (50 Mg ha−1 biochar in Cambisol and 60 Mg ha−1 biochar in Fluvisol) resulted in greater substrate mineralization. The enhanced accessibility and availability of sucrose to microorganisms, particularly fast-growing bacterial genera like Arenimonas, Spingomonas, and Paenibacillus (r-strategists belonging to the Proteobacteria and Firmicutes phyla, respectively), can be attributed to the improved physicochemical properties of the soil, including pH, porosity, and pore connectivity, as revealed by synchrotron-based micro-CT. Random forest analysis also confirmed the contribution of the microbial diversity and physical properties such as porosity on sucrose mineralization. Biochar at the middle application rate, however, resulted in the lowest PE (0.3 and 0.4 mg of CO2-C g soil−1 in Cambisol and Fluvisol, respectively) after 53 days of incubation. This result might be associated with the fact that the biochar promoted large aggregates formation, which enclosed native SOC in soil macro-aggregates (2–0.25 mm). Our study revealed a diverging pattern between substrate mineralization and SOC priming linked to the biochar application rate. This suggests distinct mechanisms, biophysical and physicochemical, driving the mineralization of non-biochar carbon in a field where biochar was applied a decade before. Highlights: The application of biochar at a moderate rate (50–60 Mg ha−1) resulted in increased labile C mineralization and decreased priming of native SOC. Biochar amendments led to the reconfiguration of physicochemical properties, including pH, porosity, and the formation of aggregates. Modified microbial community structure towards more r-strategists caused greater sucrose mineralization. As the cultured juveniles are released into self-recruiting wild population to increase fisheries resources yields, they may potentially come along with negative impacts such as intra-inter specific completion, loss of genetic diversity and fitness, even causing genetic risk. To assess the relationship between genetic risk and stock enhancement (SE) of the silver carp in the Yangtze River (YR); microsatellite loci amplification, parentage assignment, genetic diversity, genetic differentiation and structure were conducted and testified by the help of eleven fluorescence-labeled microsatellite markers method. Results showed that silver carp populations in the YR had relatively higher genetic diversity (UHe), inbreeding coefficient (Fis), and effective population size (Ne) than breeding stock populations from eight hatcheries. By using the analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA), results showed that the percentage of variance among populations and within populations were 4.15 % and 95.85 %, respectively, which indicated that genetic structure of YR populations possibly had been changed by SE. Therefore, the present study suggests that the large-scale SE possibly resulted in negative genetic impact on silver carp population. Background: Despite the increasing longevity of the world's population, with an unprecedented rise in the number of people who need palliative care (PC), there has been sparse research regarding palliative care for older people, especially when it comes to comparison of PC between healthcare systems and cultures. The aim of this systematic scoping review was to identify the characteristics of the body of literature and to examine the knowledge gaps concerning PC research for older people (> 60 years) in two healthcare systems and cultures, mainland China and Sweden. Methods: The guidelines PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews), and PICOS (Patient/population, Intervention, Comparison/control, and Outcome) were used. Empirical studies on patients 60 years or older, next of kin or staff participating in a palliative care intervention or setting were included. They were conducted in mainland China or in Sweden during 2007–2019, were published in English and were extracted from seven databases: Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Cinahl, PsycInfo, Academic Search Complete and Cochrane Library. Two independent researchers conducted the selection of studies, data extraction and methodological evaluation. Any disagreements were resolved in consultation with a third researcher. The analysis was manifest directed content analysis based on PICOS domains. Results: Of the 15 studies, four were from mainland China and 11 from Sweden. Both countries included older patients with cancer but also other end-stage diseases such as heart failure and dementia. The studies differed in design, method and the content of the interventions. The study in China based on traditional Chinese medicine concerns traditional Chinese folk music. The six qualitative studies from Sweden were evaluations of five interventions. Conclusions: Despite the high age of the participating patients, there was no focus on an ageing perspective concerning palliative care. To adapt to the changes taking place in most societies, future research should have increased focus on older persons' need for palliative care and should take account of issues concerning research ethics, ethnicity and culture. Paddy fields serve as significant reservoirs of soil organic carbon (SOC) and their potential for terrestrial carbon (C) sequestration is closely associated with changes in SOC pools. However, there has been a dearth of comprehensive studies quantifying changes in SOC pools following extended periods of rice cultivation across a broad geographical scale. Using 104 rice paddy sampling sites that have been in continuous cultivation since the 1980s across China, we studied the changes in topsoil (0–20 cm) labile organic C (LOC I), semi‐labile organic C (LOC II), recalcitrant organic C (ROC), and total SOC. We found a substantial increase in both the content (48%) and density (39%) of total SOC within China's paddy fields between the 1980s to the 2010s. Intriguingly, the rate of increase in content and density of ROC exceeded that of LOC (I and II). Using a structural equation model, we revealed that changes in the content and density of total SOC were mainly driven by corresponding shifts in ROC, which are influenced both directly and indirectly by climatic and soil physicochemical factors; in particular temperature, precipitation, phosphorous (P) and clay content. We also showed that the δ13CLOC were greater than δ13CROC, independent of the rice cropping region, and that there was a significant positive correlation between δ13CSOC and δ13Cstraw. The δ13CLOC and δ13CSOC showed significantly negative correlation with soil total Si, suggesting that soil Si plays a part in the allocation of C into different SOC pools, and its turnover or stabilization. Background Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most common pathogens in surgical site infections (SSIs). However, comprehensive epidemiological and antibiotic resistance details for P aeruginosa in Chinese SSIs are lacking. We evaluated the proportions and antimicrobial resistance of P aeruginosa among patients with SSIs in China. Methods Relevant papers from January 2010 to August 2022 were searched in databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, China Biomedical Literature Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, and Weipu. A meta-analysis was performed to analyze the proportions and 95% confidence interval (CIs) of P aeruginosa among patients with SSIs. Meta-regression analysis was used to investigate the proportion difference among different subgroups and antimicrobial resistance. Results A total of 72 studies met inclusion criteria, involving 33 050 isolated strains. The overall proportion of P aeruginosa among patients with SSIs was 16.0% (95% CI, 13.9%–18.2%). Subgroup analysis showed higher proportions in orthopedic (18.3% [95% CI, 15.6%–21.0%]) and abdominal surgery (17.3% [95% CI, 9.9%–26.2%]). The proportion in the central region (18.6% [95% CI, 15.3%–22.1%]) was slightly higher than that in other regions. Antibiotic resistance rates significantly increased after 2015: cefoperazone (36.2%), ceftriaxone (38.9%), levofloxacin (20.5%), and aztreonam (24.0%). Notably, P aeruginosa resistance to ampicillin and cefazolin exceeded 90.0%. Conclusions The proportion of P aeruginosa infection among patients with SSIs was higher than the data reported by the Chinese Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System, indicating rising antimicrobial resistance. Clear species boundaries are crucial for plans and actions on biodiversity conservation. However, morphological similarities among allied species can result in taxonomic difficulties, thus impeding conservation efforts. In China, Cinnamomum japonicumSiebold is a well‐known endangered plant, yet suffers from longstanding taxonomic issues. Here, we explicitly evaluate whether C. japonicum, C. chenii, and C. chekiangense are the same phylogenetic species on the basis of a multi‐individual sampling strategy. We identified three sets of low‐copy orthologous genes from 19 Lauraceae taxa for phylogenetic inferences. Both the concatenation and coalescent‐based phylogenies supported that C. chenii individuals were embedded in the C. japonicum clade, indicating these two taxa are conspecific. Meanwhile, C. chekiangense accessions formed a monophyly which was not sister to C. japonicum. This result, together with the morphological differences that the leaves of C. japonicum are glabrous with a faveolate pattern of venation while those of C. chekiangense have trichomes and inevident lateral veins, led us to consider both as two distinct species. Based on 17 728 neutral single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), the ADMIXTURE analysis suggested that the Chinese C. japonicum populations in Zhoushan Archipelago (=C. chenii) were genetically differentiated from the Japanese and Korean ones. Furthermore, ecological niche modeling predicted that the present distribution area of Chinese C. japonicum is likely to be unsuitable under global warming scenarios. Background: Parenting is a common and potent environmental factor influencing adolescent anxiety. Yet, the underlying neurobiological susceptibility signatures remain elusive. Here, we used a longitudinal twin neuroimaging study to investigate the brain network integration and its heritable relation to underpin the neural differential susceptibility of adolescent anxiety to parenting environments. Methods: 216 twins from the Beijing Twin Study completed the parenting and anxiety assessments and fMRI scanning. We first identified the brain network integration involved in the influences of parenting at age 12 on anxiety symptoms at age 15. We then estimated to what extent heritable sensitive factors are responsible for the susceptibility of brain network integration. Results: Consistent with the differential susceptibility theory, the results showed that hypo-connectivity within the central executive network amplified the impact of maternal hostility on anxiety symptoms. A high anti-correlation between the anterior salience and default mode networks played a similar modulatory role in the susceptibility of adolescent anxiety to paternal hostility. Genetic influences (21.18%) were observed for the connectivity pattern in the central executive network. Conclusions: Brain network integration served as a promising neurobiological signature of the differential susceptibility to adolescent anxiety. Our findings deepen the understanding of the neural sensitivity in the developing brain and can inform early identification and personalized interventions for adolescents at risk of anxiety disorders. Fostering human–wildlife coexistence necessitates a thorough and nuanced grasp of local attitudes toward wildlife. Attitudes can vary substantially based on the sociodemographic backgrounds of individuals within a society. This study examines Tibetan attitudes toward large carnivores, emphasizing the importance of contextualization in discerning the effects of sociodemographic factors on attitudes. We began by analyzing existing research on Tibetan attitudes toward wildlife in China, identifying previously studied sociodemographic variables. We then executed an online survey to evaluate the affective, behavioral, cognitive, and overall attitudes of ethnic Tibetans in China toward snow leopards (Panthera uncia), gray wolves (Canis lupus), and brown bears (Ursus arctos). Our findings show that while factors such as gender, age, religious identity, and level of education shape these attitudes, their influence differs depending on the specific attitude component and the target animal under examination. Therefore, making broad generalizations about sociodemographic differences in attitudes can be misleading. It is imperative for attitude research to clearly define the attitude component (what type of attitude), object (attitude toward what), and circumstance (attitude in which situation) being studied. Conducting ethnographic fieldwork in collaboration with local cultural experts can deepen our understanding of local perspectives and the ways sociodemographic factors influence attitudes. Background: The job performance of individual employees determines the overall performance of an organization, and organizational support is known as an important resource at the organizational level to enhance job performance. Although nursing scholars have confirmed the crucial role of organizational support in enhancing job performance, there are no studies on whether psychological capital and organizational identification mediate the association between organizational support and job performance. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of organizational support, psychological capital, and organizational identification on nurses' job performance. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 455 nurses from 21 public hospitals in China. Instruments were perceived organizational support scale, task performance scale, contextual performance scale, Nurse Psychological Capital Questionnaire, and Organizational Identification Questionnaire. Survey data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS, and hypotheses were tested using path model analysis. Results: Nurses' perceived organizational support, psychological capital, organizational identification, and task/contextual performance were positively correlated in every two variables. Psychological capital played an important mediating role in perceived organizational support and task/contextual performance, as well as organizational identification. The multi-mediating effect of psychological capital and organizational identification on the relationship between organizational support and task/contextual performance were 0.14 and 0.25, respectively. Conclusions: There was a positive correlation between organizational support and job performance among nurses. Psychological support, organizational identification and contextual performance played a chain mediation role in the relationship between organizational support on task performance in nurses. Nursing managers should pay more attention to enhancing nurses' psychological capital and organizational identification through effective interventions to improve nurses' job performance. To evaluate the characteristics of violent injury cases in Sichuan Province, China. Overall, 4866 violent injury cases in Sichuan province, China from 2014 to 2017 were included. The injury evaluation report was used to classify and summarize the injury information, case and injury characteristics, and to describe the characteristics for each risk factor. The majority of cases were males (n = 3851, 79.14%), aged 20–60 (n = 3867, 79.47%), and living in rural areas (n = 3094, 65.55%). Many cases occurred in public areas (n = 3351, 74.19%) and in the evening (n = 1005, 29.49%). Passion was the main motive for the violent injuries (n = 2098, 82.11%) and the main types of injuries were those to the brain, face, and auricula (n = 3075, 63.21%). Blunt instruments (n = 2951, 64.86%) were most commonly used to inflict injury, and the injury evaluation determined that the majority of injuries were simple (n = 2669, 54.85%) and slight (n = 1685, 34.63%). For cases resulting from passion and money, blunt instruments were more commonly used, while sharp instruments were more commonly used for injuries resulting from emotion and revenge (p < 0.05). Compared with grievous injuries, public and entertainment areas and the use of blunt instruments were risk factors for slight injuries. The use of blunt instruments was a risk factor for simple injuries. The cases of violent injury in the Sichuan Province of China have certain characteristics and causes. In order to reduce the frequency of such cases, corresponding intervention measures should be actively conducted at the identified high risk places, times, and populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The gap between the supply and demand of organs is continuously increasing. The emergence of organ procurement coordinators (OPCs), to a certain extent, has decreased the gap. In China, a majority of OPCs work in hospitals that are qualified for transplants, namely in-hospital OPCs (Ih-OPCs). Their profession experiences are closely related to donation rates and indirectly reveal aspects that should be further improved. However, no data are available in China. We sought to explore Ih-OPCs' subjective feeling of the practice experience and provide targeted interventions for administrators. A project team was established and then interview outlines were listed by virtue of discussion and literature review. Furthermore, a total of 13 Ih-OPCs were selected as participants for interview. After that, the conversation was analyzed and encoded, and themes were finally identified according to phenomenology. A total of 3 themes including positive emotions, negative emotions, and personal needs were identified, which were furthermore divided into 7 minor themes ranging from professional identity, competence improvement, recruitment methods, quality of life, workload evaluation, career prospects, and training courses. Social support and public understanding play a pivotal role in strengthening positive emotions. Meanwhile, the administrators should put more emphasis on negative emotions and personal needs, and management system should be further optimized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Transplant coordinators (TCs) play a pivotal role in the entire donation process. Their professional competences have a direct impact on donation rates. However, few specific indicators are available for assessing TCs' professional competence. Therefore, it is imperative to develop an assessment index system to measure their competence. Our objective was to construct an index system for assessing TCs' professional competences. Based on a literature review and semistructured interviews, a focus group and 12 TCs were enrolled to design the questionnaires. Then, a modified Delphi method was used. Two rounds of questionnaires were distributed to 21 experts from 7 provinces across multiple research areas between October 2020 and March 2021. The data were sorted and analyzed by a focus group. A combined assessment index system, namely, APT, including 3 constructs, the admittance assessment model (henceforth A), practical operation assessment model (P), and thousand-point performance assessment model (T), was constructed. This APT index system consisted of 3 first-level items, 8 second-level items, and 34 third-level items. The APT assessment system has been unanimously recognized by experts. Objective. A rising trend in electronic use has increased the prevalence of myopia in adolescents, but the optimal approach to controlling myopia remains undetermined. Here, we explored the effects of common single vision (SV) spectacle lenses combined with 0.01% atropine eye drops (SV + A), orthokeratology (OK) lenses, and peripheral defocus (PD) spectacle lenses on myopia control in adolescents. Methods. Totally 150 myopic adolescent patients (300 eyes) receiving treatment at The First People's Hospital of Chenzhou City were enrolled. According to doctors' advice and guardians' wishes, the patients were divided into SV + A group, OK group, and PD group, with each group consisting of 50 cases (100 eyes). The spherical equivalent, axial length, accommodative response index (accommodative sensitivity and accommodative lag), and intraocular pressure were compared before and after 12 months of wearing lenses, and the complications were recorded. Results. Before wearing lenses, there was no statistical significance in baseline characteristics such as age, gender, and spherical equivalent among the three groups (P > 0.05). After wearing lenses, the increase in spherical equivalent and axial length in the SV + A and OK groups were lower than in the PD group (P < 0.05), and the SV + A group had the lowest axial length growth. Compared with the SV + A group, accommodative sensitivity was much higher and accommodative lag was significantly lower in the OK and PD groups (P < 0.01). In addition, there was no significant difference in intraocular pressure before and after wearing lenses among the three groups (P > 0.05). Though the OK group patients had more complications, the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Conclusion. SV + A, OK, and PD lenses can effectively control the progression of myopia in adolescents, but SV + A and OK lenses exhibited more significant effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Little is known about the pattern, influencing factors of peer relationships, or their interplays amongst community‐dwelling older people. This qualitative study was undertaken to understand and present these issues under the guidance of existing Adams‐Blieszner‐Ueno integrative conceptual framework for friendship in the context of China. Semi‐structured interviews were undertaken with 20 older adults in Chongqing, China. Interview transcripts were then analysed by performing content analysis under the guidance of existing categories of Adams‐Blieszner‐Ueno integrative conceptual framework for friendship and developing separate categories inductively to ensure all data was captured. The results revealed four themes—context, individual characteristics, interactive motifs and peer relationship patterns—and 16 categories. Based on the original Adams‐Blieszner‐Ueno integrative conceptual framework for friendship, the revised framework for peer relationships modified two dimensions (from structural context to social context, friendship patterns to peer relationship patterns) and added two categories (natural context and health status) that emerge from the data. Besides, different dimensions in the modified framework for peer relationships are explicitly interrelated and not completely independent from each other. In conclusion, this study modified the pre‐existing Adams‐Blieszner‐Ueno integrative conceptual framework for friendship, especially identifying two additional categories, natural context and health status, to understand peer relationships amongst the Chinese community‐dwelling older people through careful examination of the data. All domains concerning the modified conceptual framework of peer relationship may serve as possible targets for developing peer‐involved programs and thus improving social health, well‐being and successful ageing of Chinese older people. Ketamine, as a non-competitive antagonist of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, was originally used in general anesthesia. Epidemiological data show that ketamine has become one of the most commonly abused drugs in China. Ketamine administration might cause cognitive impairment; however, its molecular mechanism remains unclear. The glymphatic system is a lymphoid system that plays a key role in metabolic waste removal and cognitive regulation in the central nervous system. Focusing on the glymphatic system, this study evaluated the behavioral performance and circulatory function of the glymphatic system by building a short-term ketamine administration model in mice, and detected the expression levels of the 5-HT2c receptor, ΔFosb, Pten, Akt, and Aqp4 in the hippocampus. Primary astrocytes were cultured to verify the regulatory relationships among related indexes using a 5-HT2c receptor antagonist, a 5-HT2c receptor short interfering RNA (siRNA), and a ΔFosb siRNA. Ketamine administration induced ΔFosb accumulation by increasing 5-HT2c receptor expression in mouse hippocampal astrocytes and primary astrocytes. ΔFosb acted as a transcription factor to recognize the AATGATTAAT bases in the 5′ regulatory region of the Aqp4 gene (−1096 bp to −1087 bp), which inhibited Aqp4 expression, thus causing the circulatory dysfunction of the glymphatic system, leading to cognitive impairment. Although this regulatory mechanism does not involve the Pten/Akt pathway, this study revealed a new mechanism of ketamine-induced cognitive impairment in non-neuronal systems, and provided a theoretical basis for the safety of clinical treatment and the effectiveness of withdrawal. Aims: This study aimed to investigate professional quality of life (ProQOL) in nurses who were fighting against COVID‐19 in Wuhan and its related factors. Background: COVID‐19 epidemic is a major threat to public health. Frontline nurses have engaged in infection prevention and control, isolation, containment and public health. However, available data on ProQOL in these nurses are limited. Methods: From 15 to 21 March 2020, the Chinese version of ProQOL was utilized to survey a total of 102 nurses through an electronic questionnaire. The stepwise regression analysis was performed to determine which factors (e.g. demographic and work‐related factors) were related to ProQOL. Results: The scores of compassion satisfaction (CS), burnout (BO) and secondary traumatic stress (STS) were 38.09 ± 5.22, 21.77 ± 4.92 and 20.75 ± 6.27, respectively. The STS and CS scores were higher than the critical value. None of the nurses reported a low level of CS or a high level of BO and STS. Nurses' ProQOL was related to working hours, workload, job satisfaction and salary satisfaction. Conclusions: Nurses who were fighting against COVID‐19 had better CS and BO, whereas STS was relatively worse. Nurses who worked for long hours had more severe STS. BO of nurses with heavy workload and dissatisfaction with their salary was more severe. Nurses who were unsatisfied with their job had poor CS. Implications for Nursing Management: It is believed that these results may help nurse managers to improve ProQOL of nurses who were fighting against COVID‐19 by minimizing working hours, reducing workload and improving job satisfaction and rewards. With abundant thermal resources, there is a long-time span for potential maize sowing in the hot subtropical monsoon region. However, with different sowing dates, maize may be exposed to elevated temperatures at different growth stages. This study aims to understand the impact of sowing date on maize growth and development and yield formation as temperatures increase. A 3-year field experiment was carried out in the typical subtropical monsoon region in China, with 11 sowing dates ranging from mid-March to late June with approximately 10-day intervals (named S1 to S11), and three main commercial varieties were included to validate the impact of sowing date. Following delayed sowing, maize plants were exposed to increased temperatures during the emergence (VE) to silking (R1) stages. Maize plants of the three varieties exhibited similar responses to delayed sowing dates in terms of growth, development, and yield performance. Vegetative growth was accelerated, while the anthesis-silking interval (ASI) and the vegetative-to-reproductive transition, that is, the interval of V12 (twelfth leaf) to R1 stages, were prolonged. The grain yield gradually decreased and reached a minimum at approximately S8-S10 (varied among varieties), which was in accordance with the decreased grain number. Further analyses revealed that the decreased grain number and yield were associated with a prolonged V12-R1 interval with delayed sowing. The duration of V12-R1 was significantly positively correlated with the maximum and minimum temperatures within a day, suggesting that the V12-R1 interval could be a parameter for evaluation of heat's impact on yield formation. Grain weight decreased as the temperature of the R1-R6 stage rose before S8 but increased as the temperature dropped after S8. Inconsistently, biomass accumulation, leaf area, and plant and ear height first increased and then decreased before and after S3-S6, respectively. Delayed sowing in hot subtropical monsoon regions exposes maize plants to elevated temperatures, leading to accelerated vegetative and reproductive growth but a prolonged vegetative-to-reproductive transition, and suppresses yield by reducing grain number and/or weight, resulting the yield decreased with the delayed sowing. Introduction: With the global aging process intensified, the demand for end-of-life care has surged, especially in China. However, its development is restricted. Understanding the life and death attitude among the elderly and its formation process, and clarifying their needs, are so important to promote social popularization of end-of-life care. Methodology: This qualitative study included 20 elderly residents in Nan and Shuangbei Communities, Chongqing City, People's Republic of China. Data were collected through semistructured in-depth individual interviews and processed by thematic analysis method. Results: Three themes and eight subthemes were identified: Characteristics of formation process (passive thinking, closed and single), life-and-death attitude (cherish and enjoy life, quality of life priority, let death take its course) and expectations of end-of-life care (preferences, basic needs, good death). Discussion: Life-and-death attitude and end-of-life care expectations of the elderly support the development and delivery of end-of-life care. Introduction: Withholding the malignant bone tumors disclosure from patients is common in China. The purpose of the study was to explore the perceptions of patients, families, doctors, and nurses regarding the disclosure of malignant bone tumors in China. Method: Semistructured interviews were conducted with 25 cases, consisting of 69 participants (14 patients, 25 family members, 17 doctors, and 13 nurses), and the transcripts were analysed using Colaizzi's (1978) descriptive phenomenological analysis process. Results: Five themes were identified: (1) doctors preferred to inform the family members first, (2) family members' decisions depended on different situations, (3) the patients agreed that disclosure should be different for each person/personally, (4) care from nurses reduced the overreaction of patients, and (5) key points improve the informing quality. Background: Military nurses should possess the competency to provide quality care in both clinical and military nursing contexts. This study aimed to identify the competencies of military nurses in general hospitals. Methods: A qualitative study was carried out using a qualitative content analysis. We purposefully sampled and interviewed 21 nurses in general hospitals in China. Results: The data analysis revealed 40 competencies, which were categorised into four main categories according to the Onion Model. These categories were motive (mission commitment), traits (perseverance, flexibility, etc.), self-identity of dual roles (obedience, empathy, etc.), as well as knowledge, skills and abilities (clinical and military nursing knowledge and skills, basic nursing ability, professional development ability, leadership and management ability). Conclusions: Existing knowledge of competencies of military nurses in general hospitals is limited. Abstract: The North China Plain (NCP) is one of the main productive regions for winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and summer maize (Zea mays L.) in China. However, water-saving irrigation technologies (WSITs), such as sprinkler irrigation technology and improved surface irrigation technology, and water management practices, such as irrigation scheduling have been adopted to improve field-level water use efficiency especially in winter wheat growing season, due to the water scarcity and continuous increase of water in industry and domestic life in the NCP. As one of the WSITs, sprinkler irrigation has been increasingly used in the NCP during the past 20 years. In this paper, a three-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the responses of volumetric soil water content (SWC), winter wheat yield, evapotranspiration (ET), water use efficiency (WUE) and irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) to sprinkler irrigation regimes based on the evaporation from an uncovered, 20-cm diameter pan located 0–5cm above the crop canopy in order to develop an appropriate sprinkler irrigation scheduling for winter wheat in the NCP. Results indicated that the temporal variations in SWC for irrigation treatments in the 0–60-cm soil layer were considerably larger than what occurred at deeper depths, whereas temporal variations in SWC for non-irrigation treatments were large throughout the 0–120-cm soil layer. Crop leaf area index, dry biomass, 1000-grains weight and yield were negatively affected by water stress for those treatments with irrigation depth less than 0.50E, where E is the net evaporation (which includes rainfall) from the 20-cm diameter pan. While irrigation with a depth over 1.0E also had negative effect on 1000-grains weight and yield. The seasonal ET of winter wheat was in a range of 206–499mm during the three years experiments. Relatively high yield, WUE and IWUE were found for the irrigation depth of 0.63E. Therefore, for winter wheat in the NCP the recommended amount of irrigation to apply for each event is the total 0.63E that occurred after the previous irrigation provided total E is in a range of 30–40mm. Organ transplantation is an important method to save the lives of patients suffering from organ failure. However, the low rate of organ donation is a common problem worldwide. Many potential organ donors in the intensive care unit (ICU) are not properly identified, which is one reason for the low donation rate. ICU nurses play a key role in organ donation but may be uncertain regarding some issues. In this study, an analysis of the reasons why ICU nurses in western China are reluctant to encourage patients and their families to donate organs is performed, providing a reference for promoting ICU nurse participation in organ donation work. From August to November of 2017, using a purposive sampling method, we conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews using a phenomenological research method with 18 ICU nurses who were working in 4 large hospitals with organ transplant accreditation in Chongqing City, China, and analyzed the data with phenomenology. Reasons for the reluctance of ICU nurses in encouraging patients to donate organs were categorized into the following 4 themes: limitation of the nurses' professional role, influence of the family's negative emotions, lack of training regarding organ donation in medical institutions, and impact of a conservative social attitude. Chinese medical and health institutions need to attach importance to the duties and roles of ICU nurses in organ donation work, the creation of a good death culture, the implementation of training for organ donation specialist nurses, and the strengthening of advocacy efforts for organ donation so that ICU nurses' reluctance in engaging in organ donation coordination in China can be mitigated and the nurses can better participate in promoting organ donation to potential donors. • To the best of our knowledge, China does not have a clear law on the duties of nurses involved in organ donation. However, there are a large number of potential organ donors in the ICU; ICU nurses are the first to identify potential organ donors. The H9N2 subtype of avian influenza virus (H9N2 AIV) has caused significant losses in chicken flocks throughout China. At present, consensus has been reached that field isolates of H9N2 underwent antigenic drift to evolve into distinct groups with significant antigenic divergence from the commercially available vaccines in China. This project continues to monitor the evolution characteristics of H9N2 hemagglutinin (HA) genes in China over the past 3 yr. The results showed that the current circling H9N2 viruses were diversified into h9.4.2.5 subclade, which was genetically distant from commonly used commercial vaccine strains. Compared with vaccine strains or 2014 strains, more than 42.1% of the variable antigenic sites in recent 3 yr' strains have shown significant changes and these stacked changes have caused significant differences in antigenicity. We constructed a recombinant vaccine strain rCQY-GHHA, which uses A/Chicken/China/SichuanCQY/2014 as the framework and A/Chicken/China/SichuanGH/2020 strain, which meets the recent viral antigenic characteristics, as the HA gene donor. The recombinant strain was prepared as an oil-adjuvant inactivated vaccine following an industrial process. The results of the immune protection experiment showed that the rCQY-GHHA vaccine was better than the commercial vaccine strain SS in reducing the morbidity, pathological lesion, virus shedding, and viral load. Global promotion of organ transplantation is contingent upon continuous improvement of the donation rate. Organ donation education is an important measure for changing public awareness and promoting organ donation. Therefore, it is important and urgent to conduct a systematic study of the organ donation courses offered in China and around the world. The aim of this study was to learn the views and needs of Chinese medical students and provide a reference for international peers. Semistructured, in-depth interviews and purposive sampling were used in this study. A total of 18 university students majoring in medicine and nursing were selected according to the principle of data saturation and interviewed. The data were sorted and analyzed with phenomenology. These interviewees generally agreed that an organ donation course should be offered. They were in urgent need of knowledge regarding organ donation procedures and relevant policies and eager for a practical and experience-based teaching method design. The Chinese medical students surveyed also believed that the course should also be available to clinical practitioners, nonmedical students, and the public. Medical students' demand for an organ donation course should be considered. To fully stimulate their interest in learning and to provide support and a guarantee for continuous improvement of transplant operations promotion and donation rate worldwide, specific organ donation courses and flexible training should be created. • To the best of our knowledge, there is no organ donation promotion education in China at present. Background: Previous research regarding the humanistic care ability of Chinese medical professionals was limited to small groups of nurses or students. More systemic analyses involving more general medical professionals are scarce and urgently needed.Objective: To survey the sense and ability of humanistic care on medical professionals in China and to identify the potential influencing factors.Methods: A novel scale of humanistic care indicators was developed. Based on the new scale, a questionnaire was designed, tested and used to survey a total of 928 medical professionals recruited from three hospitals in the Chinese Western city Chongqing. Chi-square test was used for single factor analyses. For multiple factor analyses, multivariate logistic regression was performed.Results: Our selected group of medical professionals scored nearly 4 or above on a 1-5 scale for all our query items related to the sense and ability of humanistic care. The main factors affecting humanistic care ability of medical professionals in Chongqing include gender, nature of department/division, modes of employment and participation in humanistic care ability training and so on.Conclusions: In general, the participants in our study group had a humanistic care ability score lower than the aimed value, suggesting that the ability of humanistic care of these medical professional was not satisfactory. The purpose of this study was to explore whether PAX4 gene R192H polymorphism plays a role in type 2 diabetes in Chinese Han population, using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technology to detect R192H polymorphism in exon 5 of PAX4 gene in 410 cases of patients with type 2 diabetes and 95 cases of non-diabetic controls from January 2014 to January 2015. There are no significant differences in the genotypes or allele frequencies between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and non-diabetic controls about PAX4 R192H polymorphism. Similarly, no statistical differences were observed in the T2DM and non-diabetic controls when adjusting for gender stratification and age stratification. The comparisons on the subjects in clinical characteristics including blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and systolic blood pressure showed no difference between carriers with the GA and AA genotype except diastolic blood pressure (p value = 0.038). Although extensive studies have identified large number of microRNAs (miRNAs) and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in ischemic stroke, the RNA regulation network response to focal ischemia remains poorly understood. In this study, we simultaneously interrogate the expression profiles of lncRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs changes during focal ischemia induced by transient middle cerebral artery occlusion. A set of 1924 novel lncRNAs were identified and may involve brain injury and DNA repair as revealed by coexpression network analysis. Furthermore, many short interspersed elements (SINE) mediated lncRNA:mRNA duplexes were identified, implying that lncRNAs mediate Staufen1-mediated mRNA decay (SMD) which may play a role during focal ischemia. Moreover, based on the competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) hypothesis, a stroke regulatory ceRNA network which reveals functional lncRNA:miRNA:mRNA interactions was revealed in ischemic stroke. In brief, this work reports a large number of novel lncRNAs responding to focal ischemia and constructs a systematic RNA regulation network which highlighted the role of ncRNAs in ischemic stroke. With its huge ageing population, China faces an enormous challenge for its elderly support and care. One of the proposed solutions was to diversify the elderly support systems. Towards this goal, setting up the Elderly Care Departments in the community health service centres is one of such new Chinese endeavour. This qualitative study was conducted among the residents enrolled in existing Elderly Care Departments established at the community health service centres in Chongqing, a Southwestern Chinese city, to evaluate the lived experience of the residents and to find strategies for improvement. Eighteen participants were recruited from the residents of the Elderly Care Departments of three community health service centres in the city. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth individual interviews and were analysed utilising the Colaizzi's phenomenological method. Five main themes were identified: Safety and trust; Satisfaction and relief; Gratitude and mutual understanding; Complaints and helplessness; and Worries and apprehension. We found that set-up of the Elderly Care Departments at the community health service centres appeared to be consistent with the idea of integrated care and in general, the current running mode was able to provide the elderly with effective medical, nursing and other cares. Caprock sealing ability is one of the key geological factors to ensure the stable and safe operation of the underground gas storage (UGS). Gypsum salt rock is the high-quality caprock for oil and gas reservoirs, however, the effect of cyclic stress on its sealing capacity is still unclear, which restricts the construction progress of this kind of UGS. Therefore, taking the H UGS in the Sichuan Basin in China as an example, this paper analyzes the initial sealing capacity of gypsum salt caprock using cast thin section, conventional physical property test, nuclear magnetic resonance and breakthrough pressure tests. On this basis, study the variation characteristics of physical and mechanical parameters of gypsum salt caprock under cyclic stress using cyclic stress loading and unloading experiment, and then analyze the evolution law of its sealing capacity. The results show that gypsum salt caprocks of H UGS can be used as a good tight caprock with the porosity less than 1.0%, permeability less than 0.005 mD, breakthrough pressure greater than 6.0 MPa and triaxial compressive strength greater than 210 MPa. In addition, the physical properties of gypsum salt caprock become worse and the sealing capacity increases under cyclic stress, and physical and mechanical changes of gypsum salt caprock mainly occur in the first 30 cycles accounting for about 75%. Moreover, with the increase of cycles, the Poisson's ratio increases by 88% while the change range of elastic modulus is only 6.4%, indicating that gypsum salt caprocks mainly expands laterally and still maintain good elasticity. However, when the cycle times reach a certain threshold of 1002, the cumulative plastic strain of gypsum salt rock will become larger and larger until fracture. And the gypsum salt caprocks can be effective cover in the 184 cycles of loading and unloading with the maximum pressure threshold of 18 MPa and minimum pressure threshold of 1 MPa. The conversion of natural forests to plantations can lead to a substantial loss of soil organic carbon (SOC) and threaten the function of soil microbial communities. However, the effect of forest conversion on the relationship between SOC dynamics and shifts in the composition and function of the microbial community remain poorly understood, although such information is critical for predicting the long-term effect of land-use change on global SOC dynamics and storage. To fill this knowledge gap, our study investigated the influence of two decades of converting natural forest to a tea plantation on SOC storage, microbial community composition, C-degrading enzyme activity and the abundance of C-degrading microbial functional genes in a subtropical region in China. Two decades after converting natural forest to tea plantation, SOC storage decreased by 30%, and labile SOC [including easily mineralized C (C min), readily oxidizable C (ROC), dissolved organic C (DOC), and microbial biomass C (MBC)] decreased by 21–71%. Land-use change decreased the relative abundance of copiotrophic bacteria but increased the relative abundance of oligotrophic bacteria and lignin-degrading fungi. This resulted in a decrease in cellulase activity and cbh I gene abundance involved in cellulose degradation and conversely an increase in ligninase activity involved in lignin degradation after the conversion. Such shifts in microbial community composition and function associated with land-use change were mediated by the decrease in the labile C pool rather than the total SOC. Our study provided new insights into not only shifts in microbial communities but also specific C functional genes and related enzymes after forest conversion. Tet is a type of alkaloid extracted from Stephania tetrandra, and it has recently been demonstrated that Tet can protect against inflammation and free radical injury and inhibit the release of inflammatory mediators. The present study was designed to observe the protective effect of Tet on sodium taurocholate-induced severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). The rat model of SAP was induced by retrograde bile duct injection of sodium taurocholate and then treated with Verapamil and Tet. The results showed that Tet can reduce NF-κB activation in pancreas issue, inhibit the SAP cascade, and improve SAP through inducing pancreas acinar cell apoptosis and stabilizing intracellular calcium in the pancreas, thus mitigating the damage to the pancreas. Our study revealed that Tet may reduce systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and multiple organ dysfunction syndromes (MODS) to protect against damage, and these roles may be mediated through the NF-κB pathway to improve the proinflammatory/anti-inflammatory imbalance. On the basis of investigations on the composition and contents of heavy metals in the domestic refuse in the Three-Gorges region of the Yangtze River, in combination with the experimental results, this paper deals with the distribution rule of heavy metals in the various compartments of an incineration system: leachate pool, fly ash and residue. It is concluded that in the leachate pool heavy metals should not be neglectable since about 30% of Pb and 10% of Cr are leached here; in the incineration system, above 74% of Cr, As and Pb exists in residue; above 96% of Hg exists in fly ash and the contents of Cd in fly ash are close to those of residue. It is also concluded that the physical conditions of incineration have a significant influence on the distribution of heavy metals in the incineration system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• This was the first study that was conducted by UHPLC-Quadrupole-Orbitrap-HRMS and HPLC-tri-quadrupole-LIT-MS for Meiguihua oral solution (MOS). • Totally 46 compounds (21 flavonoids and 25 tannins) were firstly detected in MOS, and among them 14 polyphenols were identified for the first time in this herb. • This study provides the simultaneous quantification method for ten compounds including hyperoside and isoquercitrin (isomers). Meiguihua oral solution (MOS), a classical Chinese medicinal formula, was approved by the China Food and Drug Administration for production. However, the quality evaluation of MOS has not been reported. In this present study, qualitative and quantitative analysis of MOS were conducted by ultra high performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole-orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-orbitrap-HRMS) and high performance liquid chromatography-tri-quadrupole linear ion trap mass spectrometry (HPLC-tri-Q-LIT-MS). Totally 46 phenolic compounds (21 flavonoids and 25 tannins) were identified in the MOS, among them 14 polyphenols were not reported in raw plant materials of MOS. The simultaneous quantification of ten compounds including gallic acid, quercetin-3- O -sophoroside, ellagic acid, sophoraflavonoloside, hyperoside, isoquercitrin, avicularin, astragalin, quercitrin and juglanin, which were completed in 16 min in the negative electrospray ionization (ESI) mode under multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) method. Linearity was reached fine determination coefficient (r2 > 0.9995). Precisions, repeatability, stability (inter-day and intra-day), and recovery were validated and the relative standard deviations (RSD) were less than 2.9%, 4.7%, 3.6% and 1.79%, respectively. This result proved the high sensitivity and efficiency of the method.
