Leveraging the unexpected variation in the frequency of eating restaurant prepared food due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we seek to identify and estimate the causal relationship between the frequency of eating restaurant prepared food and people's BMI. We use first-differencing and instrumental variable approaches to correct for potential endogeneity bias due to both the time-invariant and time-varying unobserved factors. Our results show eating more restaurant prepared food has a positive and statistically significant effect on BMI, and in addition to other channels that have been identified in the literature, mood-boosting is another channel through which eating restaurant prepared food leads to weight gain. Heterogeneous effect analysis further shows that eating restaurant prepared food is more likely to have an impact on those people who lead a more stressful lifestyle before the pandemic. This study investigated the effects of oral feeding readiness assessments on nutraceutical therapies in infants admitted to neonatal intensive care units. Nutraceuticals are increasingly being used to promote newborn health. However, their effects on feeding transitions and developmental outcomes have not been thoroughly studied. Therefore, this study was conducted on 210 infants to explore the effect of nutraceutical therapies on the rate of successful eating transitions and the incidence of feeding-related problems. Data on age, gender, birth weight, delivery technique, and nutraceutical use were also collected. Successful transitions, delayed transitions, and complications such as aspiration and feeding intolerance were recorded. The findings indicated that infants who received nutraceutical therapies achieved a higher success rate in transitioning to feeding, with a statistically significant difference in outcomes compared to those who did not. Probiotics improved gastrointestinal well-being and decreased challenges during dietary changes. Omega-3 supplements and vitamin D exhibited favorable effects, aiding smooth transitions and reducing hospital readmissions. This study revealed that age and feeding technique significantly influenced the success of transitions. • Serum branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) were unfavorably correlated with obesity. • Dietary BCAA intake was associated with increase in body fat measures. • Dietary BCAAs show a weak correlation with circulating BCAA concentrations. Animal studies showed a detrimental effect of dietary branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) on metabolic health, while epidemiological evidence on dietary BCAAs and obesity is limited and inconclusive. We hypothesized that high dietary and circulating BCAAs are unfavorably associated with obesity in community-dwelling adults. We evaluated the 1-year longitudinal associations of dietary BCAA intake and circulating BCAAs with body fat measures. Body weight, height, and circumferences of the waist (WC) and hip (HC) were measured at baseline and again after 1-year. Body composition and liver fat [indicated by controlled attenuation parameter (CAP)] were also assessed after 1-year. Serum BCAA concentrations at baseline were quantified by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. Diet was collected using 4 quarterly 3-day recalls during the 1-year. The correlation coefficients between dietary and serum BCAAs were 0.12 (P =.035) for total dietary BCAAs, and ranged from -0.02 (soy foods, P =.749) to 0.18 (poultry, P =.001). Total dietary BCAA intake was associated with increase in body weight (β = 0.044, P =.022) and body mass index (BMI, β = 0.047, P =.043). BCAAs from animal foods were associated with increase in HC, while BCAAs from soy foods were associated with weight gain and higher CAP (all P <.05). Serum BCAAs were associated with higher WC, HC, BMI, body fat mass, visceral fat level, and CAP (all P <.05). These results support that dietary and circulating BCAAs are positively associated with the risk of obesity. More cohort studies with validated dietary assessment tools and long-term follow-up among diverse populations are needed to confirm our findings. The tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng was unearthed in 1978 at Leiguudun in Suizhou City, Hubei Province, China. This is the largest wooden coffin in rock pit and vertical cave in the Warring States period in China. The large wooden coffin components provide reliable material data for the study of the feudal burial system in the pre-Qin period and have high value. In this paper, the wooden coffin excavated from the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng was studied. By understanding the composition of wood, studying the weight gain rate, shrinkage rate, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and compression resistance, the wood reinforced by rosin and epoxy resin was compared, and the reinforcement effect and principle of the two reinforcement methods were discussed. The study found that the wood properties of rosin reinforced group were better than those of epoxy reinforced group in the aspects of compressive strength, weight gain rate and volume shrinkage rate, and the mechanical properties of wood were significantly improved. In addition, methanol or ethanol can be used to dissolve the rosin shellac in this strengthening process, which can achieve reversible strengthening treatment. The results provide valuable examples and research ideas for the selection of different conservation techniques of large wooden cultural relics unearthed in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River during the Warring States Period. Background: This study addresses the scarcity of research on nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) in China. It aims to explore the current NVP status in the country using validated questionnaires, analyze associated factors, and provide a useful reference for future research. The study also compares results from different assessment tools. Methods: Online questionnaires were utilized to gather data from 535 pregnant women across 24 provinces. Demographic, pregnancy, and NVP-related information were collected. NVP severity was assessed using Pregnancy-Unique Quantification of Emesis and Nausea (PUQE) and the Rhodes Index of Nausea, Vomiting, and Retching (RINVR) scales. Ordinal logistic regression identified factors linked to NVP severity. Differences between PUQE and RINVR assessments were compared. Results: NVP prevalence exceeded 90%, with 96.1% assessed by PUQE and 90.8% by RINVR. Incidence decreased from nausea to retching and vomiting. Severe NVP correlated with reduced gestational weight gain, younger age, fewer gestational weeks, and living in North (all P values < 0.05). There was moderate consistency between PUQE and RINVR assessments. The NVP prevalence assessed by the PUQE is higher than that assessed by the RINVR in the same population. However, the proportion of NVP levels above moderate assessed by RINVR is greater than that assessed by PUQE. Conclusions: NVP is highly prevalent among Chinese pregnant women, with nausea being predominant. Simple Summary: In China, high-grain diets for ruminants due to forage scarcity cause metabolic disorders. Yeast culture promotes rumen health by stabilizing microbial composition and enhancing nutrition and immunity. Therefore, the objective of this experiment was mainly to investigate the effect of the addition of two different species of yeast culture on goat production performance, rumen fermentation profile, microbial balance, and immunity under high-grain conditions. The results indicated that the incorporation of yeast culture into a high-grain diet significantly enhanced the production performance of goats, augmented their immunity, and stabilized the rumen environment. However, different types of yeast cultures acted by different mechanisms. The results provide a reference for the rational application of yeast culture in production. It is a common practice among farmers to utilize high-grain diets with the intention of promoting ruminant growth. However, this approach bears the risk of inducing rumen disorders and nutrient metabolism diseases. Yeast culture (YC) showed advantages in ruminant applications. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of adding two different types of YC to high-grain conditions on production performance, rumen fermentation profile, microbial abundance, and immunity in goats. A total of 30 male goats with similar body condition were randomly distributed into 3 dietary treatments with 10 replicates per treatment as follows: basic diet group (CON); basic diet + 0.5% yeast culture 1 (YC1) group; basic diet + 0.5% yeast culture 2 (YC2) group. The trial lasted for 36 days. The results demonstrated that dietary YC supplementation led to an increase in the average daily gain and a reduction in feed intake and weight gain ratio in goats. It increased the apparent digestibility of crude protein, NDF, and ADF (p < 0.05). The serum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and Tumor Necrosis Factor-α in the control group were significantly higher than those of the YC groups (p < 0.05). The serum concentrations of Immunoglobulin (Ig)A and IgG in the control group were significantly lower than those in the YC groups (p < 0.05). The rumen concentration of microbial protein (MCP) in the control group was significantly lower than that in the YC groups (p < 0.05). There was a negative correlation between the concentration of IL-10 and Bacteroidota, Spirochaetota, and Succinivibrio, while there was a positive correlation between concentrations of IL-10 and Firmicutes. Nevertheless, discrepancies were observed in the impact of the two different types of YC on the physiological and biochemical indicators of the animals. The concentration of triglyceride in the YC1 group was significantly higher than that of the CON and YC2 groups, while the concentration of urea in the YC2 group was significantly higher than that of the CON and YC1 groups (p < 0.05). At the phylum level, the addition of YC2 to the diet significantly increased the relative abundance of Bacteroidota and Fibrobacterota and significantly decreased Firmicutes compared to the control. At the genus level, the addition of YC1 to the HGD significantly reduced the relative abundance of Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, while the addition of YC2 to the HGD significantly increased the relative abundance of Prevotellace-ae_UCG-001, Fibrobacter, and Prevotellaceae_UCG-003 (p < 0.05). The addition of YC significantly improved growth performance, increased nutrient digestibility, beneficially manipulated ruminal fermentation and microbial diversity, and improved immune function. Aims: To identify health literacy profiles in individuals receiving haemodialysis and to explore how these profiles interact with individuals' self‐efficacy, engagement with traditional dietary habits, self‐reported fluid restriction and relative‐interdialytic weight gain. Design: A cross‐sectional study engaging nephrology departments from four hospitals in Guangdong Province, China. Methods: A sample of 433 individuals receiving haemodialysis participated between December 2018 and July 2019. We assessed health literacy, self‐efficacy and self‐reported fluid restriction using the Health Literacy Questionnaire, the Fluid Self‐efficacy Scale and the Fluid Adherence Subscale, respectively. Traditional dietary habits, including daily tea drinking, soup drinking and preserved food consumption, were measured using three yes/no questions. Relative‐interdialytic weight gain was calculated by dividing the mean interdialytic weight gain (from three recent intervals) by dry weight. Latent profile analysis and structural equation modelling were performed. Results: Three health literacy profiles were identified: low, moderate and high. Compared to those in the low health literacy profile, individuals in high and moderate health literacy profiles demonstrated an indirect association with reduced relative‐interdialytic weight gain. This reduction can be attributed to their higher self‐efficacy levels, decreased reliance on dietary habits and higher self‐reported fluid restrictions. Conclusions: Most participants exhibited either low or moderate levels of health literacy. Improving health literacy has the potential to promote self‐efficacy and foster effective fluid restriction, ultimately leading to a reduction in relative‐interdialytic weight gain in individuals receiving haemodialysis. Impact: This study reveals heterogeneity in health literacy levels among individuals receiving haemodialysis and illuminates the connections between an individual's entire spectrum of health literacy and fluid management. These findings provide valuable insights for developing person‐centred fluid management interventions, especially for individuals with diverse cultural dietary backgrounds within the haemodialysis population. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the experiential meaning of child-rearing for marriage immigrant women in Korea in the context of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: Using the hermeneutic descriptive phenomenology framework developed by Colaizzi, 10 marriage immigrant women rearing preschool and school-age children were invited through purposive and snowball sampling from two multicultural support centers in Korea. The participants were rearing one or two children, and their original nationalities were Vietnamese, Japanese, Cambodian, and Chinese. Individual in-depth, face-to-face, semi-structured interviews were conducted from September 1 to November 30, 2021. We extracted significant statements from the transcripts, transformed these into abstract formulations, and organized them into theme clusters and themes to authentically capture the essence of the participants' subjective experiences. Results: Four theme clusters with 14 themes were derived. The four theme clusters identified were "navigating child healthcare alone," "guilt for not providing a social experience," "worry about media- dependent parenting," and "feelings of incompleteness and exclusion." This study explored the perspectives of mothers raising children as marriage migrant women who experienced physical and emotional health crises due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: The findings underscore that marriage immigrant women encountered heightened challenges in managing their children's health and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic due to linguistic and cultural barriers limiting access to healthcare and information. Additionally, these women experienced considerable emotional stress from perceived inadequacies in providing a holistic social and developmental environment for their children under extensive social restrictions. The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is bred extensively in Eastern and Northern China and faces a series of problems such as frequent diseases, germplasm degradation, and declining benefits, which have appeared to seriously affect the sustainable development of the cultivation industry. Haematococcus pluvialis, a type of unicellular green algae, have been proven to be the suitable dietary supplementation in crustacean feeds. After 14 days of feeding with 5% dietary supplementation with Haematococcus pluvialis powder, the growth, antioxidantase activities, and gut microbiota of E. sinensis were analyzed. The results indicated that H. pluvialis powder could significantly improve growth indicators including weight gain rate (WGR) and specific growth rate (SGR) of E. sinensis (p < 0.05). The levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) declined, while that of phenoloxidase (PO) kept rising under the treatment of H. pluvialis powder. Moreover, alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activity dropped initially and then increased. No significant differences in the Simpson index and Chao1 index in the control and H. pluvialis powder treatment were observed (p > 0.05). Although the dominant microbiota in the crab gut were not affected significantly by H. pluvialis powder, significant differences in the relative abundance of the dominant phyla between the control and H. pluvialis powder treatment groups were observed (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the relative abundance of Firmicutes and Candidatus_Bacilloplasma, which play an important role in the life activities of E. sinensis, were significantly higher in the group treated by H. pluvialis powder than in the control (p < 0.05). Aim: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of URLi (ultra rapid lispro insulin) compared to insulin lispro as bolus insulin with basal insulin using CGM in the individuals with type 2 diabetes(T2D) in China. Methods: This was a double-blind, randomized, parallel, prospective, phase 3 study. Subjects with uncontrolled T2D were recruited and randomized 1:2 into the insulin lispro and URLi groups. Subjects received a consistent basal insulin regimen during the study and self-administered insulin lispro or URLi before each meal throughout the treatment period. Subjects underwent a 3-day continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) at the baseline and endpoint respectively, and then CGM data were analyzed. The primary endpoint was to compare the difference in postprandial glucose (PPG) control using CGM between the two groups. Results: A total of 57 subjects with T2D completed the study. Our CGM data showed that postprandial glucose excursions after breakfast (BPPGE) in the URLi group was lower than that in the insulin lispro group (1.59 ± 1.57 mmol/L vs 2.51 ± 1.73 mmol/L, p = 0.046). 1-hour PPG was observed to decrease more in the URLi group than that in the insulin lispro group (-1.37 ± 3.28 mmol/L vs 0.24 ± 2.58 mmol/L, p = 0.047). 2-hour PPG was observed to decrease more in the URLi group than that in the insulin lispro group (-1.12 ± 4.00 mmol/L vs 1.22 ± 2.90 mmol/L, p = 0.021). The mean HbA1c level decreased by 1.1% in the URLi group and 0.99% in the insulin lispro group, with no treatment difference (p = 0.642). In the CGM profile, TBR was not significantly different between the two groups (p = 0.743). The weight gain also did not differ between the two groups (p = 0.303). Conclusion: URLi can control breakfast PPG better than insulin lispro in adults with T2D in China, while it is non-inferior in improving HbA1c. Background and Objectives: Diagnostic blood loss is a significant factor in the development of anaemia in neonates with very low birth weight. This study aimed to assess the clinical efficacy of intervention approaches involving varying diagnostic blood loss and red blood cell transfusion volumes in neonates with very low birth weights experiencing anaemia during hospitalization. Materials and Methods: A total of 785 newborns with anaemia weighing less than 1500 g were enrolled from 32 hospitals in China. The study involved monitoring diagnostic blood loss and red blood cell transfusion and evaluating relevant interventions such as red blood cell transfusion and clinical outcomes. Three intervention approaches were established based on the difference between blood loss and transfusion (Intervention Approaches 0, 1 and 2). The primary outcomes measured were unsatisfactory weight gain during hospitalization and neonatal mortality. The secondary outcomes included related complications. Results: In the non‐hospital‐acquired anaemia group, Intervention Approach 2 had the highest incidence of below‐normal weight gain (odds ratio [OR]: 3.019, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.081–8.431, p = 0.035). Multivariate analysis revealed that Intervention Approach 1 had a protective effect on weight gain. In the hospital‐acquired anaemia group, Intervention Approach 2 had the highest incidence of below‐normal weight gain (OR: 3.335, 95% CI: 1.785–6.234, p = 0.000) and mortality (OR: 5.341, 95% CI: 2.449–11.645, p = 0.000), while Intervention Approach 1 had the lowest incidence of intraventricular haemorrhage. Intervention Approach 1 demonstrated favourable outcomes in both anaemia groups. Purpose: Nutrient intake for pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is important to ensure satisfactory birth outcomes. This study aims to explore the dietary profiles of patients with GDM, compare the results with the Chinese dietary guidelines or Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) from China and investigate the relationship between maternal dietary intake and pregnancy outcomes. Patients and Methods: A total of 221 patients with GDM in the second trimester were included in the cohort. Dietary intake data were collected using a 24-hour recall method for three consecutive days. The pregnancy outcomes of these participants were subsequently monitored. Both univariate logistic regression and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to explore the associations between dietary intake variables or general characteristics variables and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Results: Participants with adverse pregnancy outcomes showed a lower intake of iodine and vitamin D, a lower percentage of dietary energy intake from carbohydrates and a higher percentage of dietary energy intake from fats, compared to participants without adverse pregnancy outcomes. The gestational weight gain and family history of diabetes were associated with an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Conversely, regular exercise, the intake of iodine and Vitamin D, and the percentage of dietary energy intake from carbohydrates were associated with a decreased risk. Conclusion: The daily diet of pregnant women with GDM in China did not meet the dietary guidelines or DRIs. The low intake of Vitamin D and iodine, the low dietary carbohydrate ratio, family history of diabetes, lack of exercise, and high gestational weight gain were associated with increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in pregnant women with GDM. Purpose: Delayed onset of lactogenesis is a significant barrier to achieving the WHO-recommended 50% exclusive breastfeeding rate in the first six months. This study maps the main factors influencing this condition, addressing gaps in the current research landscape. Methods: Following Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review framework, databases such as PubMed, Web of Science (WOS), Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL plus with full text, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNIK), Weipu Chinese Journal Service Platform (VIP), Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform, and China Biomedical Literature Database (CBM) were searched on February 1, 2023. Studies in Chinese and English involving pregnant and postpartum women, focusing on delayed onset of lactogenesis, were included without restrictions on publication date or geography. Results: Forty-six studies published between 2002 and 2022 met the inclusion criteria, revealing variable incidences of delayed lactogenesis among different groups. Thirty-four influencing factors were identified and organized into five themes: maternal-infant characteristics, perinatal mental state, physical activity participation during pregnancy, breastfeeding behaviors, and medical staff interventions. Within eighteen major factors highlighted, factors such as age, pre-pregnancy BMI, gestational weight gain, average LATCH score within 24 hours postpartum, labor analgesia, sleep, frequency of postpartum breastfeeding, and timing of initial breast suckling/pumping showed inconsistent or conflicting conclusions. Conclusion: High and variable incidences of delayed lactogenesis underline its multifactorial nature. Effective interventions require strong advocacy from healthcare professionals and adherence by pregnant women. Patients with schizophrenia often encounter notable weight gain during their illness, heightening the risk of metabolic diseases. While previous studies have noted a correlation between obesity and cognitive impairment in schizophrenia, many were cross-sectional, posing challenges in establishing a causal relationship between weight gain and cognitive function. The aim of this longitudinal study is to examine the relationship between weight gain and cognitive function in patients with first-episode schizophrenia (FES) during the initial 6-month antipsychotic treatments. Employing linear and logistic regression analyses, the study involved 337 participants. Significantly, baseline scores in processing speed (OR = 0.834, p = 0.007), working memory and attention (OR = 0.889, p = 0.043), and executive function (OR = 0.862, p = 0.006) were associated with clinically relevant weight gain (CRW, defined as an increase in body weight > 7%) at the 6-month endpoint. On the other hand, CRW correlated with improvements in the Brief Visuospatial Memory Test (p = 0.037). These findings suggest that patients with lower baseline cognitive performance undergo more substantial weight gain. Conversely, weight gain was correlated with cognitive improvements, particularly in the domain of visual learning and memory. The evidences on the relationship between gestational weight gain rate (GWGR) and children's cognitive and behavioral development have been limited. A total of 3273 singleton live birth mother-child pairs from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort in China were included in the study. Maternal GWGR was calculated based on the weights measured at multiple antenatal checkups. Children's cognitive and behavioral development were assessed by Chinese version of Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-Fourth Edition and Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist 1.5–5. Then generalized linear models were performed for analyses. In the field of children's cognitive development, excessive GWGR in the second trimester was associated with increased visual space index (VSI), fluid reasoning index (FRI) and full scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) scores, while excessive GWGR in the third trimester was associated with decreased VSI, working memory index (WMI) and FSIQ scores. In the field of children's behavioral development, excessive GWGR in the second trimester was associated with decreased aggressive behaviors and externalizing problems scores. Children's behavioral development was assessed by main caregivers and might cause a certain degree of bias. There might be other potential confounders that we did not take into account. A high GWGR in the second trimester might be beneficial for children's cognitive and behavioral development, while a high GWGR in the third trimester might be harmful. • GWGR is an accurate indicator to assess maternal weight gain in 2nd, 3rd trimester. • New evidence on the effect of GWGR on children's neurodevelopment has been yielded. • GWGR in different trimesters may impact children's neurodevelopment in different way. This study aimed to explore and compare the effect of weight change, and waist circumference (WC) change, on the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in individuals with metabolically healthy overweight or obesity (MHOW/O) and metabolically unhealthy overweight or obesity (MUOW/O) in a health check-up cohort in China. 5625 adults with overweight or obesity, and free from NAFLD at baseline were included. Metabolically healthy was defined as not having any components of metabolic syndrome. Weight/WC changes were calculated as the relative difference between the first and second visits of check-up. NAFLD was assessed based on abdominal ultrasound. During a median follow-up of 2.1 (IQR: 1.1–4.3) years, 1849 participants developed NAFLD. In MHOW/O participants, the multivariable adjusted HRs (95 % CIs) for NAFLD in weight change ≤ −5.0 %, and − 4.9–− 1.0 % were 0.36 (0.23–0.59), 0.59 (0.43–0.80), respectively, compared to the weight stable group (−0.9% to 0.9 %). The corresponding HRs (95 % CIs) for the association between WC change (≤ 6.0 %, - 5.9 to −3.0 %) and NAFLD in MHOW/O participants were 0.41 (0.27–0.62), and 0.74 (0.54–1.01), respectively, compared to the WC stable group (−2.9–2.9 %). Similar patterns were observed in MUOW/O participants. A more marked gradient of cumulative incidence of NAFLD across weight/WC change categories was observed in MHOW/O than in MUOW/O individuals. A more evident association between weight/WC loss and risk of NAFLD was observed in MHOW/O than in MUOW/O individuals. Our findings indicate the practical significance of encouraging all individuals with overweight and obesity to achieve a clinically relevant level of weight/WC loss to prevent NAFLD, even among metabolic healthy groups. Simple Summary: In the winter in northern China, the type of housing or outdoor management may affect the growth and health of sheep, especially if they are young. We compared growth performance, immune function and antioxidant status of female lambs housed there in an enclosed building, a polytunnel or kept outdoors for 28 days. Compared to lambs kept outdoors at −14 °C, those in the enclosed house and polytunnel had improved growth rates, immune function and antioxidant status. We conclude that the polytunnel is best for the sheep's welfare, followed by the enclosed house, with the outdoor treatment being the worst. Cold conditions in northern China during winter may reduce sheep growth and affect their health, especially if they are young, unless housing is provided. We allocated 45 two-month-old female lambs to be housed in an enclosed building, a polytunnel, or kept outdoors, for 28 days. The daily weight gain and scalp and ear skin temperature of outdoor lambs were less than those of lambs that were housed in either a house or polytunnel; however, rectal temperature was unaffected by treatment. There was a progressive change in blood composition over time, and by the end of the experiment, outdoor lambs had reduced total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and increased malondialdehyde compared to those in the house or polytunnel. In relation to immune responses in the lambs' serum, in the polytunnel, immunoglobulin A (IgA), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-4 (IL-4) were higher and immunoglobulin G (IgG) lower compared with the concentrations in lambs that were outdoors. Over the course of the experiment, genes expressing heat shock proteins and antioxidant enzymes increased in lambs in the outdoor treatment, whereas they decreased in lambs in the indoor treatments. It is concluded that although there were no treatment effects on core body temperature, the trends for progressive changes in blood composition and gene expression indicate that the outdoor lambs were not physiologically stable; hence, they should not be kept outdoors in these environmental conditions for long periods. Now, no recommendations of gestational weight gain (GWG) after gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) diagnosis for Chinese women was made. This study aimed to explore the optimal GWG after oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) for Chinese women with GDM. The GWG status of 11,570 women was retrospectively analyzed. Binary regression model and restricted cubic spline were used to estimate the association between GWG after OGTT and the predicted probability of adverse outcomes. Based on above, the optimal GWG was defined as the range that not exceed 1% increase in the predicted probability from the lowest point. Results shown that every increased one unit GWG after OGTT was associated with higher risks of macrosomia, cesarean section and LGA, and lower risk of preterm birth. According to the WHO and Working Group on Obesity in China (WGOC) recommended pre-pregnancy BMI category, the optimal GWG were proposed: 3.66 to 6.66 kg/3.66 to 6.66 kg in underweight group, 3.07 to 6.50 kg/3.02 to 6.40 kg in normal weight group, 1.06 to 2.73 kg/0 to 1.99 kg in overweight group, and not applicable/− 0.22 to 2.53 kg in obese group, respectively. Simple Summary: The production of artificially farmed bullfrogs in China is limited by the low metamorphosis rate of tadpoles. This study investigated the effects of different doses (0 g/kg, 1.5 g/kg, 3 g/kg, 4.5 g/kg, and 6 g/kg) of thyroid powder added to the diets on the metamorphosis and growth of bullfrog tadpoles. The results showed that 4.5 g/kg of thyroid powder could significantly increase the metamorphosis rate and weight gain rate of tadpoles, while adding 6 g/kg of thyroid powder could increase the average weight of tadpoles during metamorphosis. In addition, both doses of thyroid powder could promote the fat breakdown metabolism of tadpoles and alter the intestinal microbiota composition (increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria, especially Akkermansia). In summary, appropriate doses of thyroid powder could promote the metamorphosis and growth of tadpoles, and might be used to solve the problem of the low metamorphosis rate of bullfrogs. A low metamorphosis rate of amphibian larvae, commonly known as tadpoles, limits the farming production of bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeiana). This study aimed to examine the effects of processed thyroid powder as a feed additive on tadpole metamorphosis, lipid metabolism, and gut microbiota. Five groups of tadpoles were fed with diets containing 0 g/kg (TH0), 1.5 g/kg (TH1.5), 3 g/kg (TH3), 4.5 g/kg (TH4.5), and 6 g/kg (TH6) thyroid powder for 70 days. The results showed that TH increased the average weight of tadpoles during metamorphosis, with the TH6 group having the highest values. The TH4.5 group had the highest metamorphosis rate (p < 0.05). Biochemical tests and Oil Red O staining showed that the lipid (triglyceride) content in the liver decreased after TH supplementation, especially at doses higher than 1.5 g/kg. RT-qPCR revealed that TH at doses higher than 4.5 g/kg significantly up-regulated the transcriptional expression of the pparα, accb, fas, fadd6, acadl, and lcat genes, which are related to lipid metabolism (p < 0.05). These results showed that TH seems to simultaneously promote the synthesis and decomposition of lipid and fatty acids, but ultimately show a decrease in lipids. As for the gut microbiota, it is noteworthy that Verrucomicrobia increased significantly in the TH4.5 and TH6 groups, and the Akkermansia (classified as Verrucomicrobia) was the corresponding genus, which is related to lipid metabolism. Specifically, the metabolic pathways of the gut microbiota were mainly enriched in metabolic-related functions (such as lipid metabolism), and there were significant differences in metabolic and immune pathways between the TH4.5 and TH0 groups (p < 0.05). In summary, TH may enhance lipid metabolism by modulating the gut microbiota (especially Akkermansia), thereby promoting the growth of tadpoles. Aim: To critically assess the effects of white noise on the pain level, weight gain and vital signs (heart rate, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation) of preterm infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Design: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs). Methods: Ten databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO, SinoMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP and Wanfang Data) were systematically reviewed from inception to July 2022. Two reviewers evaluated the risk of bias separately using the Cochrane Collaboration criteria and extracted data using a predesigned information form. Results: The meta‐analysis included eight eligible RCTs. According to statistical analysis, white noise significantly affected the pain level, weight gain, heart rate, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation in preterm infants. Regardless of the outcome measurement timing, gestational age and birth weight of preterm infants, subgroup analysis demonstrated that white noise reduced the pain level, heart rate and respiratory rate and promoted weight gain in preterm infants in NICUs. Background: Excessive weight gain and obesity are widely accepted as risk factors for diabetes mellitus, and the age at which obesity onsets may be related to the development of cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers. Here, we aimed to investigate associations between the onset-age of overweight/obesity and risk of developing diabetes mellitus in China. Methods: 42,144 people with the normal weight range and without diabetes at baseline, were enrolled from the Kailuan cohort which began on the 1st June 2006. All participants were followed-up, biennially, until 31st December 2017. During follow-up, 11,220 participants had become overweight/obese. For each case, one normal-weight control was matched according to age ( ± 1 year) and sex. Our final analysis included 10,858 case-control pairs. An age-scaled Cox model was implemented to estimate hazard ratios (HR) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) for diabetes mellitus incidence across age-groups. Results: At a median follow-up of 5.46 years, 1,403 cases of diabetes mellitus were identified. After multivariate adjustments, age-scaled Cox modelling suggested that risk gradually attenuated with every 10 year increase in age of onset of overweight/obesity. Diabetes mellitus adjusted HRs (aHRs) for new-onset overweight/obesity at <45years, 45-54 years, and 55-64 years were 1.47 (95%CI, 1.12-1.93), 1.38 (95%CI, 1.13-1.68), 1.32 (95%CI, 1.09-1.59), respectively. However, new-onset of overweight/obesity at >65 years did not relate to diabetes mellitus (aHR, 1.20; 95%CI, 0.92-1.57). This trend was not observed in women or the new-onset obesity subgroup but was evident in men and the new overweight onset subgroup. Conclusion: Participants with early onset of excessive weight gain issues are at considerably higher risk of developing diabetes mellitus compared to those who maintain a normal weight. This study examines the obesity effect of proximity to US fast‐food restaurants (Kentucky Fried Chicken [KFC] or McDonald) on Chinese. We first provide some stylized facts and raise the hypothesis that proximity to KFC or McDonald increases overweight. We then put the hypothesis into a test using the China Health and Nutrition Survey data. Exploiting community (district in urban area and village unit in rural area) level KFC or McDonald density within 10 km by using the geocoding information, we find that the exposure to KFC or McDonald adversely affects people obesity. Our results are robust in a number of additional checks and placebo tests. The pro‐obesity effects are more pronounced for the lower educated than the higher educated. Background and Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the associations between a combined healthy lifestyle during the second and third trimesters and offspring anthropometric outcomes in China. Methods and Study Design: We examined these associations among 548 participants from nine community health centers and three hospitals in the North China cohort. A pregnant women's healthy lifestyle score (HLS) was constructed based on six lifestyle factors: smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, sedentary behavior, diet, and gestational weight gain. Anthropometric indicators at birth like birth weight (BW), head circumference (HC), and birth length (BL) were collected, and weight to head circumference ratio (WHC, kg/m), body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) and Ponderal Index (PI, kg/m3) were calculated. Multivariate linear and logistic regression models were used to examine the effects of HLS during the second and third trimesters on anthropometric outcomes at birth, respectively. Results: In fully adjusted models, we found a negative association between second and third-trimester HLS and offspring HC and a positive relationship between second-trimester HLS and BL (p<0.05). Neonates with mothers in the highest HLS tertile had a 5.6% relatively lower HC and 2.3% relatively longer body length than women in the lowest tertile. Each additional unit in third-trimester HLS had an associated decrease in HC by 0.96 cm. None of the associations between HLS and BW, WHC, BMI, and PI of offspring were observed. Conclusions: A healthy lifestyle score may significantly impact offspring head circumference and body length, supporting the important role of healthy lifestyles in improving the health of offspring. Over the past few years, China has become a hotspot for the domestication of the commercially valuable largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Although the food preference of this fish has been studied, little is known about the genes regulating its growth. Population breeding was performed using two indigenous strains (QT1 and QT2), with the results showing that the organ/body ratio, abdominal fat rate and the body weight gain of QT1 and QT2 were higher than for the offspring YL1 and Y3 which are extensively cultured in China. Subsequent RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) allowed for the identification of potential genes and pathways involved in growth performance. Overall, the transcriptome analysis generated 89,056 transcripts and 42,529 Unigenes. A PCA revealed significant differences between QT1 and the other three strains, while the other three strains did not show much difference. A KEGG enrichment analysis of differentially expressed genes showed that steroid biosynthesis was the most enriched pathway among the four strains. These pathways could be related to the growth of largemouth bass. In addition, a co-expression network analysis suggested a strong interaction between liver steroid biosynthesis and the genes for photosynthesis, secondary metabolism and stress response. Taken together, the above results can provide new insights into the liver metabolism of different strains of largemouth bass during culture and provide references for the subsequent domestication and breeding programs of largemouth bass. Angelica dahurica radix has a long history of traditional use in China and Korea for treating headaches, cold-damp pain and skin diseases. Despite various pharmacological studies on A. dahurica, its impact on bones remains unclear. Hence, this study investigated the inhibitory effect of A. dahurica's radix water extract (WEAD) on osteoclast differentiation. In vitro experiments showed that WEAD effectively suppresses osteoclast differentiation. Treatment of an osteoclast precursor with WEAD significantly suppressed the expression of nuclear factor of activated T-cells 1 (NFATc1), essential transcription factor for osteoclastogenesis, while increasing the expression of negative regulators, interferon regulatory factor 8 (Irf8) and v-maf musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma oncogene homolog B (MafB). Consistent with the in vitro findings, the oral administration of WEAD (100 and 300 mg/kg/day) to mice subjected to surgical ovariectomy for a duration of six weeks alleviated bone loss, while also mitigating weight gain and liver fat accumulation. In addition, we also identified phytochemicals present in WEAD, known to regulate osteoclastogenesis and/or bone loss. Purpose: This meta-analysis intended to evaluate the safety and metabolic effects of the combination of olanzapine (OLZ) and samidorphan (SAM) in the treatment of schizophrenia (SCZ) patients.Patients and Methods: We searched for the English and Chinese databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the OLZ combined with SAM for SCZ. The English databases included PubMed, Web of Science, EMbase, and Cochrane Library, however, Chinese databases included Chinese Biology Medicine (CBM), VIP, Wanfang, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). All database searches were due by May 31, 2023. Using Review Manager 5.4 software, a meta-analysis was conducted following a literature review and data extraction.Results: This study included five RCTs involving 1781 patients. Regarding safety, the meta-analysis revealed that the probability of weight gain was reduced in the OLZ and SAM group than in the OLZ group (RR = 0.83, 95% CI (0.69, 0.99), P < 0.05). Statistically, the incidence of severe adverse safety events, dry mouth, headache, drowsiness, death, and suicidal perception events was insignificant (P > 0.05); in terms of metabolism, compared with the OLZ group, the OLZ plus SAM group reduced total cholesterol (TC) levels (MD = − 3.58, 95% CI (− 6.81, − 0.34), P < 0.05). However, it had no significant effect on metabolic indices, including low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, glucose, and insulin index (P > 0.05).Conclusion: In patients with SCZ, treatment with the combination of OLZ and SAM decreased the incidence of weight gain adverse events and TC levels; nevertheless, it did not affect other adverse events or metabolic parameters. These findings provide clinicians with evidence-based guidance and support for drug selection. However, it is crucial to confirm these findings through further high-quality research. Simple Summary: The yak is the primary income source for millions of people in remote areas of western China and other parts of Asia, providing a basic subsistence commodity for herdsmen. Yaks depend on natural grazing, but the grass trace elements may be insufficient for the yaks' requirements. Our prior research demonstrated that the levels and sources of copper, manganese, and iodine could influence in vitro rumen fermentation for yaks. The aim of this study was to optimize yak feeding standards by examining the impact of diets containing different levels of copper, manganese, and iodine on yak growth. Results showed that diets containing 15.00 mg/kg of copper, 50.00 mg/kg of manganese, and 0.50 mg/kg of iodine had the most positive effect on the growth of growing yaks. Our study will facilitate yak diet formulation design and promote yaks' industry development. Copper, manganese, and iodine are part of a yak's required trace elements. However, knowledge about their dietary requirements is scarce. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to evaluate rumen fermentation, blood parameters, and growth performance and screen out the optimum levels of trace elements in yaks' diet. Here, 18 three-year-old castrated yaks were randomly divided into four groups, which fed with diets containing basal (CON: 4.40, 33.82, and 0 mg/kg) and low-level (LL: 10.00, 40.00, and 0.30 mg/kg), middle-level (ML: 15.00, 50.00, and 0.50 mg/kg), and high-level (HL: 20.00, 60.00, and 0.70 mg/kg) copper, manganese, and iodine for 30 days. With the increase in trace elements, yaks' daily weight gain (DWG), rumen pH, ammonia nitrogen, microbial protein (MCP), and volatile fatty acids levels and serum triglycerides and urea nitrogen levels showed firstly increasing and then decreasing trends and reached the highest values in ML, and serum ceruloplasmin and total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activities showed continuously increasing trends. Yaks' DWG, rumen MCP, butyrate, and valerate levels and serum triglycerides, urea nitrogen, ceruloplasmin, and T-SOD levels in ML were significantly higher than CON. Enterovirus G (EV-G) is prevalent in pig populations worldwide, and a total of 20 genotypes (G1 to G20) have been confirmed. Recently, recombinant EV-Gs carrying the papain-like cysteine protease (PLCP) gene of porcine torovirus have been isolated or detected, while their pathogenicity is poorly understood. In this study, an EV-G17-PLCP strain, 'EV-G/YN23/2022', was isolated from the feces of pigs with diarrhea, and the virus replicated robustly in numerous cell lines. The isolate showed the highest complete genome nucleotide (87.5%) and polyprotein amino acid (96.6%) identity in relation to the G17 strain 'IShi-Ya4' (LC549655), and a possible recombination event was detected at the 708 and 3383 positions in the EV-G/YN23/2022 genome. EV-G/YN23/2022 was nonlethal to piglets, but mild diarrhea, transient fever, typical skin lesions, and weight gain deceleration were observed. The virus replicated efficiently in multiple organs, and the pathological lesions were mainly located in the small intestine. All the challenged piglets showed seroconversion for EV-G/YN23/2022 at 6 to 9 days post-inoculation (dpi), and the neutralization antibody peaked at 15 dpi. The mRNA expression levels of IL-6, IL-18, IFN-α, IFN-β, and ISG-15 in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were significantly up-regulated during viral infection. This is the first documentation of the isolation and pathogenicity evaluation of the EV-G17-PLCP strain in China. Gestational weight management in obese women is critical in clinical work. Adverse pregnancy outcomes are associated with improper gestational weight gain (GWG). However, the pattern of GWG (PGWG) and its correlation with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) in obesity are still unclear in China. This retrospective cohort study evaluates clinical data from 799 women through multivariate analyses and trajectory analyses. All the participants are stratified per first trimester weight gain category into three groups (Inadequate‐1st, <0.5 kg; Adequate‐1st, 0.5–2.0 kg; Excessive‐1st, >2.0 kg) and PGWG refers to the weekly weight gain during each gestational period. GWG is positively associated with first trimester weight gain. 78.4% of the Excessive‐1st participants have excessive total GWG, in contrast to Inadequate‐1st (32.7%) and Adequate‐1st (48.2%). After 20 weeks, the weekly weight gain rapidly accelerates, and 77.3% have a weekly weight gain exceeding the Institute of Medicine recommendations. Trajectory analysis of weekly weight gain based on HDP shows two separate weight gain curves after 20 weeks in women with and without a high risk of HDP. Especially in Excessive‐1st participants, weekly weight gain after 20 weeks over 0.32 kg/w is positively related to the risk of HDP (<0.32 kg/w vs. 0.32–0.61 kg/w, adjusted odds ratios [aOR]: 2.999, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.054–8.537; <0.32 kg/w vs. >0.61 kg/w, aOR: 5.362, 95% CI: 1.719–16.729). Limited studies have examined the associations between diet quality and gestational weight gain (GWG) among Chinese pregnant women, adopting Chinese GWG guidelines. We prospectively investigate the associations of diet quality, using the Chinese Healthy Diet Index for Pregnancy (CHDI‐P), which assessed diet quality from 'Diversity', 'Adequacy' and 'Limitation' dimensions with overall 100 points, with GWG among participants enroled in Southwest China. Food consumption was collected by 24 h dietary recalls for three consecutive days and CHDI‐P scores were divided into tertiles. GWG was calculated according to the weight measured before delivery and classified into adequate weight gain (AWG), insufficient weight gain (IWG) and excessive weight gain(EWG) following Chinese GWG guidelines. Multinomial regression analyses and stratified analyses by pre‐pregnancy body mass index were performed to estimate the association between CHDI‐P and GWG. A total of 1416 participants were recruited in early pregnancy, and 971 and 997 participants were respectively followed up in middle and late pregnancy. The mean CHDI‐P score was 56.44 ± 6.74, 57.07 ± 7.44 and 57.38 ± 7.94 points in early, middle and late pregnancy, respectively. Women in the lowest CHDI‐P scores group had an increased risk of EWG in middle (OR = 1.53, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.08–2.17) and late pregnancy (OR = 1.71, 95% CI = 1.21–2.41) than women in the highest group, while overweight/obese women had a greater risk of EWG in late pregnancy (OR = 4.25, 95% CI = 1.30–13.90). No association was found between the CHDI‐P scores and IWG. Poor diet quality in middle and late pregnancy was associated with a higher risk of EWG. Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted global economies and individual health. This study uses data from the China Family Panel Data (CFPS) in 2018 (before the pandemic) and 2020 (during the pandemic) to a) estimate the relationships between the perceived risk of unemployment and individuals’ mental health, physical health, and health behaviors; and b) explore the variations of these relationships between rural and urban adults in China. Methods: Ordinary linear regression models or Logit models are employed, depending on the nature (continuous vs. discrete) of the dependent variables. Results: We find that the perceived risk of unemployment was statistically and positively associated with the risk of depression, and the association was greater for rural adults than for urban adults. Rural-urban variations were observed in various dimensions. For rural adults, the perceived risk of unemployment was statistically and negatively associated with life satisfaction, the probability of gaining weight and becoming obese, the probability of having adequate sleep, and computer-based screen time. These associations were statistically insignificant for urban adults. On the other hand, the perceived risk of unemployment was statistically and negatively associated with self-rated very-good-to-excellent health condition and health-compromising behaviors (e.g., smoking and drinking) for urban adults; but such associations were statistically insignificant for rural adults. Discussion: These findings suggest that rural and urban adults exhibited dierent psychological and behavioral responses to the unemployment risk during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past decades, China has seen a dramatic epidemic of overweight and obesity. However, the optimal period for interventions to prevent overweight/obesity in adulthood remains unclear, and little is known regarding the joint effect of sociodemographic factors on weight gain. We aimed to investigate the associations of weight gain with sociodemographic factors, including age, sex, educational level, and income. This was a longitudinal cohort study. This study included 121,865 participants aged 18–74 years from the Kailuan study who attended health examinations over the period 2006–2019. Multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic spline were used to evaluate the associations of sociodemographic factors with body mass index (BMI) category transitions over two, six, and 10 years. In the analysis of 10-year BMI changes, the youngest age group had the highest risks of shifting to higher BMI categories, with odds ratio of 2.42 (95% confidence interval 2.12–2.77) for a transition from underweight or normal weight to overweight or obesity and 2.85 (95% confidence interval 2.17–3.75) for a transition from overweight to obesity. Compared with baseline age, education level was less related to these changes, whereas gender and income were not significantly associated with these transitions. Restricted cubic spline analyses suggested reverse J-shaped associations of age with these transitions. Background: The effect of gestational weight gain (GWG) as a controllable factor during pregnancy pelvic floor function has rarely been investigated, and studies on twin primiparas are even less frequent. The objective of the present study was to explore the effect of GWG on postpartum pelvic floor function in twin primiparas. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 184 twin primiparas in the pelvic floor rehabilitation system of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from January 2020 to October 2021. Based on the GWG criteria recommended by the Institute of Medicine, the study subjects were classified into two groups: adequate GWG and excessive GWG. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were applied to explore the relationship between GWG and pelvic floor function. Results: Among the 184 twin primiparas, 20 (10.87%) had excessive GWG. The rates of abnormal vaginal dynamic pressure (95% vs. 74.39%), injured type I muscle fibers (80% vs. 45.73%), anterior vaginal wall prolapse (90% vs. 68.90%), and stress urinary incontinence (50% vs. 20.12%) of twin primiparas with excessive GWG were significantly higher than those with adequate GWG. There was no significant difference between the total score of the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory-Short Form 20 (PFDI-20) or the scores of the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Distress Inventory 6 (POPDI-6), the Colorectal-Anal Distress Inventory 8 (CRADI-8), and the Urinary Distress Inventory 6 (UDI-6) in the two groups (P > 0.05). After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the results showed that excessive GWG was positively associated with abnormal vaginal dynamic pressure (OR = 8.038, 95% CI: 1.001–64.514), injured type I muscle fibers (OR = 8.654, 95% CI: 2.462–30.416), anterior vaginal wall prolapse (OR = 4.705, 95% CI: 1.004–22.054), and stress urinary incontinence (OR = 4.424, 95% CI: 1.578–12.403). Conclusion: Excessive GWG in twin primiparas was positively correlated with the prevalence of pelvic floor dysfunction but did not exacerbate pelvic floor symptoms in twin primiparas. Objective: Data on iodine loss in breast milk, which are critical for establishing the appropriate dietary iodine intake for lactating women, is currently limited. A study was conducted to assess iodine loss in breast milk among Chinese lactating women to estimate the appropriate dietary intake of iodine. Methods: A total of 54 pairs of healthy, lactating women and their infants aged 0–6 months were recruited from Tianjin and Luoyang cities in China. A 4 days infant weighing study was conducted to assess iodine loss in the breast milk of lactating women. Mothers were required to weigh and record their infants' body weights before and after each feeding for a 24 h period from 8:00 am to 8:00 am. During the weighing study, 2812 breast milk samples and 216 24-h urine samples were collected from each lactating mother for four consecutive days. In addition, a 3 days 24 h dietary record, including salt weighing and drinking water samples collecting, was performed by each lactating mother to determine dietary iodine intake during the weighing study. Results: The average dietary iodine intake of lactating women was 323 ± 80 μg/d. The median breast milk iodine concentration and 24 h urinary iodine concentration of lactating women were 154 (122–181) and 135 (104–172) μg/L, respectively. The mean volume of breast milk and the mean iodine loss in the breast milk of lactating women were 711 ± 157 mL/d and 112 ± 47 μg/d, respectively. The appropriate dietary intake of iodine among lactating Chinese women is approximately 260 µg/d. Conclusions: Based on the iodine loss in breast milk (110 μg/d) found in this study, and the estimated average requirement of iodine for adults, the appropriate dietary intake of iodine among lactating Chinese women is 260 µg/d, which is higher than the 240 μg/d recommended by the China Nutrition Science Congress in 2013. Study Question: Are maternal urinary isoflavone (ISO) concentrations during pregnancy associated with anogenital distance (AGD) in infants at birth, and at 6 and 12 months of age?Summary Answer: Higher maternal urinary ISO concentrations during pregnancy were associated with longer AGD in infants of both sexes, and equol (EQU) and daidzein (DAD) were identified as the important ISO mixture components in the observed associations.What Is Known Already: Evidence of the association of prenatal exposure to ISO with offspring's AGD is mainly derived from animal studies, which used different study designs and had inconsistent results. Only one human study has been reported and it found null associations between maternal ISO exposure during pregnancy and AGD among boys at birth, with a small sample size and a wide range of exposure windows. No human study on girls was found.Study Design, Size, Duration: Prospective cohort study (Shanghai-Minhang Birth Cohort Study), with pregnant women recruited at 12-16 weeks of gestation in Shanghai, China between April and December 2012. One thousand two hundred and twenty-five live singletons were left in the cohort at delivery of which 480 mother-infant pairs had data on both maternal urinary ISO concentrations and at least one AGD measurement and were included in the present study. Anopenile distance (AGDAP) and anoscrotal distance (AGDAS) of boys and anoclitoral distance (AGDAC) and anofourchette distance (AGDAF) of girls were measured at birth and at 6 and 12 months of age.Participants/materials, Setting, Methods: Multiple linear regression models were used to examine the associations between maternal ISO concentrations and AGD. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was implemented to examine both the overall effects of ISO mixture and the single effect of each ISO and identify important components of ISO mixture.Main Results and the Role Of Chance: A general profile of higher concentrations of maternal ISO associated with longer AGD in infants of both sexes was observed, when maternal education, parity, BMI before pregnancy (BMI, categorical variable), passive smoking during early pregnancy, age at delivery, gestational weeks and infant body size were adjusted for. Among boys, EQU was associated with increased AGDAS at birth and at 6 and 12 months, and DAD was associated with increased AGDAP at birth. Among girls, the associations of EQU and DAD with increased AGDAC and AGDAF at birth were found. When gestational weight gain and feeding patterns of infants in the first 6 months were additionally adjusted for, and maternal BMI was adjusted for as a continuous variable, more pronounced associations were observed, especially for associations of genistein (GEN), DAD and glycitein (GLY) with increased AGDAP and AGDAS at 6 months in boys. However, these associations were not always observed in the highest tertile group, and no consistent dose-response relationships were found. Similar results were observed in BKMR models, showing positive correlations of concentration of ISO mixture with increased AGDAS at both 6 and 12 months among boys, and increased AGDAC and AGDAF at birth among girls. Statistically significant increments of 4.96 mm (95% credible interval (CrI): 1.40, 8.52) and 1.07 mm (95% CrI: 0.02, 2.13) in AGDAS at 6 months among boys and AGDAC at birth among girls, respectively, were observed at the 75th percentile of ISO mixture, compared with 25th percentile. EQU and DAD were identified as the important components among ISO-AGD associations.Limitations, Reasons For Caution: First, due to the short half-lives of ISO, the accuracy of a single spot urine sample reflecting ISO exposure during pregnancy may be limited, and thus may cause non-differential misclassification. Second, despite the adjustments for several important covariates in the study, unmeasured and residual confounding factors may remain a concern. Third, false discovery due to multiple testing may remain. Finally, the reduced sample sizes attributed to the loss of follow-up and missing data of confounders may limit our ability to detect an association, if any existed.Wider Implications Of the Findings: Prenatal ISO exposure may affect the reproductive development of offspring. Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between gene polymorphisms and clinical factors with the concentrations of valproic acid (VPA) in adult patients who underwent neurosurgery in China. Methods: A total of 531 serum concentration samples at steady state were collected from 313 patients to develop a population pharmacokinetic (PPK) model. Data analysis was performed using nonlinear mixed effects modeling. Covariates included demographic parameters, biological characteristics, and genetic polymorphism. Bootstrap evaluation showed that the final model was stable. Sensitive analysis was performed to verify the relationship between gene polymorphisms and concentrations of VPA. Linear regression was used to analyze the relationship between VPA concentration, ANKK1, and daily dosage. Results: In the recruited patients, 17 of 25 single-nucleotide polymorphism distributions were consistent with the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. A one-compartment model with first-order absorption and elimination was developed for VPA injections. VPA clearance was significantly influenced by three variables: sex (17.41% higher in male than female patients), body weight, and the ANKK1 gene. Typical values for the elimination clearance and the volume of central compartment were 0.614 L/min and 23.5 L, respectively. The model evaluation indicated the stable and precise performance of the final model. After sensitive analysis using Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U tests, we found that patients with AA alleles had higher VPA concentrations than those with GG and AG alleles. Linear regression models showed that gene polymorphisms of ANKK1 had little effects on VPA concentration. Conclusion: A PPK model of VPA in Chinese Han patients was successfully established; this can be helpful for model-informed precision-dosing approaches in clinical patient care, and for exploring the mechanism of VPA-induced weight gain. Lycium barbarums are traditionally used as a homology of medicinal plants in China with a potent role in metabolism and immunomodulation. The current study was performed to explore the attenuation effect and microbiota regulation of Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (BLBP) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced intestine damage in mice. A total of 70 mice were randomly divided into five groups; negative control (GA), LPS (GB), both treated with an equal volume of normal saline, and BLBP treatment groups GC (100 mg/kg), GD (200 mg/kg), and GE (400 mg/kg) via gavage for 19 days. On Day 19, mice in groups GB, GC, GD, and GE were treated with 10 mg/kg LPS for 24 h and euthanized to collect intestine samples for pathological examination and microbiota sequencing. The results showed a non-significant difference in body weight gain among the five mouse groups; however, mice in the GC and GE groups showed decreased weight gain. An H&E examination revealed that the integrity of intestinal villi was destroyed by LPS, while BLBP supplement alleviated intestinal damage with an increase in villus height and a decrease in crypt depth. A total of over 59,000, 40,000, 50,000, 45,000, and 55,000 raw sequences were found in groups GA, GB, GC, GD, and GE, respectively. LPS challenge decreased alpha diversity indexes significantly (p < 0.05), while a non-significant difference was found between different BLBP treatment groups and the GA group. A total of 8 phyla and 13 genera were found among five mouse groups, and BLBP partly restored the bacterial abundance in mice. LPS changed 282 metabolic pathways in KEGG L2, 77 metabolic pathways in KEGG L3, and 205 metabolic pathways in MetaCyc, respectively. The BLBP-supplemented groups, especially GE, showed reverse effects on those metabolic pathways. The current study revealed that BLBP can effectively decrease intestinal damage through the regulation of intestinal microbiota, which may provide new insights for the prevention of intestinal disease using food and medicine homologous of Lycium ruthenicum. Aim: To examine the optimal gestational weight gain (GWG) for Chinese pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) based on the Chinese‐specific body mass index (BMI) classification. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the 2017–2020 data from pregnant women with GDM in a tertiary hospital. A quadratic function model and the total predicted probability of adverse pregnancy outcomes were developed to obtain the optimal GWG. Differences in the incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes between our optimal GWG recommendations and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) 2009 GWG guidelines were also analyzed. Results: A total of 8103 pregnant women with GDM were analyzed. Based on the Chinese‐specific BMI classification, the optimal GWG range was 11.0–17.5 kg for underweight women, 3.7–9.7 kg for normal‐weight women, −0.6 to 4.8 kg for overweight women, and − 9.8 to 4.2 kg for obese women. Excessive GWG had a higher risk of large for gestational age (LGA) (OR: 2.99, 95% CI: 2.42–3.70), macrosomia (OR: 2.35, 95% CI: 1.77–3.12), pre‐eclampsia (OR: 1.91, 95% CI: 1.37–2.65), gestational hypertension (OR: 1.65, 95% CI: 1.24–2.19), cesarean section (OR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.15–1.44), postpartum hemorrhage (OR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.02–1.64); insufficient GWG had a higher risk of small for gestational age (OR: 1.82, 95% CI: 1.20–2.75). Compared to the IOM 2009 GWG guidelines, the prevalence of macrosomia, LGA, and postpartum hemorrhage were significantly lower in pregnant women following the implementation of our recommended GWG range (p < 0.05). Fuzhuan brick tea (FBT), a type of black tea, is a traditional beverage in China, especially popular among frontier ethnic groups. FBT is well-known for its health benefits, such as hypoglycemic, anti-hypertensive, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and detoxification effects. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms on the molecular level are still elusive and the key compounds responsible for the health benefits are unidentified. Previous studies have mainly focused on functional studies of the water extract. However, FBT is typically cooked with butter or milk. Therefore, we hypothesized that some lipophilic components in FBT, which can be absorbed through the co-consumption of butter or milk, may play an important role in the health benefits. The present study aimed to investigate whether the liposoluble extract of FBT alleviates symptoms related to metabolic diseases and to identify the active compounds involved. By comparing the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) profiles of water, milk and hexane extract, some low polarity peaks were observed in the milk and hexane extracts. Furthermore, the hexane extract treatment alleviated body weight gain, serum total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and inhibited the accumulation of hepatic fat granules in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced C57BL/6N mouse model. In order to identify the key functional lipophilic compounds in FBT, the hexane extract of FBT was subjected to chemical characterization. Four phenol analogs were characterized, namely, isodihydroauroglaucin (1), dihydroauroglaucin (2), tetrahydroauroglaucin (3), and flavoglaucin (4). Compounds 1 and 4 reduced the levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride in vivo. Both compounds also inhibited the high-fat diet-induced body weight gain and accumulation of fat granules in the liver of C57BL/6N mice. Aim: There are no prospective longitudinal studies on the association between well-controlled gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) without pharmacologic therapy and the physical growth of offspring in infancy. We aimed to identify the trajectories in physical growth (from 0–12 months of age) in the offspring of mothers with well-controlled GDM without pharmacologic therapy in a prospective cohort in China. Methods: This study included 236 offspring of mothers with GDM and 369 offspring of mothers without GDM. Mothers with GDM were not on pharmacologic therapy. The length and weight of infants were measured at 0, 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. Linear mixed-effect models and linear mixed-effect models were applied. Results: The fully adjusted model showed that the weight-for-age z-score (WAZ), length-for-age z-score (LAZ), and BMI-for-age z-score (BMIZ) were similar at birth for the GDM and control groups. However, subsequent increases in WAZ and BMIZ for the GDM group lagged the increases for the control group at the subsequent periods of observation, 0–1, 0–6, and 0–12 months. Conclusions: Well-controlled GDM without pharmacologic therapy may normalize physical growth of offspring at birth and decelerate their weight gain in infancy. Simple Summary: China is not only a huge meat rabbit consumer but also the largest meat rabbit producer in the world, contributing a large amount of rabbit meat products to the domestic and foreign markets every year. Therefore, it is important for the domestic and international rabbit meat market to improve rabbit breeding production efficiency and rabbit meat quality based on the good use of domestic feed resources in China. It is well known that dietary amino acid nutrition is of great importance to animal growth. Lysine and methionine are limited in the common domestic rabbit feed sources in China, but they play an important role in rabbit growth. Moreover, different lysine and methionine compositions of the diets respond differently to rabbit growth. Consequently, the search for a better composition of dietary lysine and methionine is the main objective of this study. In recent years, ensuring food security has been an important challenge for the world. It is important to make good use of China's domestic local feed resources to provide safe, stable, efficient, and high-quality rabbit meat products for China and the world. Lysine and methionine are the two most limiting essential amino acids in the rabbit diet. However, little is known about the rational composition of lysine and methionine in rabbit diets and the mechanisms that affect growth and development. Accordingly, in this study, we sought to address this knowledge gap by examining the effects of different compositions of lysine and methionine in rabbit diets. Subsequently, the growth status, nitrogen metabolism, blood biochemical indexes, muscle development, muscle quality, and the growth of satellite cells were evaluated in the animals. The results showed that diets containing 0.80% Lys and 0.40% Met improved average daily weight gain, feed conversion, nitrogen use efficiency, and muscle quality in the rabbits (p < 0.05). Additionally, it altered the amino acid transport potential in muscle by upregulating the expression of the SLC7A10 gene (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the cell viability and the rate of division and migration of SCs in the 0.80% Lys/0.40 % Met composition group were increased (p < 0.05). SLC38A2 and P–mTOR protein expression was upregulated in the 0.80% lysine/0.40% methionine composition group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, 0.80% Lys/0.40% Met was the most suitable lysine and methionine composition in all tested diets. SLC38A2 acted as an amino acid sensor upstream of mTOR and was involved in the 0.80% Lys/0.40% Met regulation of muscle growth and development, thus implicating the mTOR signaling pathway in these processes. Amomum villosum Lour. (A. villosum), a comestible medicinal plant, has been traditionally used in China to treat diarrhea, stomach fullness, and abdominal distension. Polysaccharide, the main chemical component of A. villosum, has been shown to possess potential antioxidant and glycosidase inhibitory activities; however, whether it has anticolitis activity is unknown. The aim of this research was to evaluate the anticolitis effects of A. villosum polysaccharide (AVLP) in BALB/c mice. The results showed that AVLP administration significantly reversed body weight loss, colon shortening and colon weight gain and decreased the levels of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines in colitis mice (p < 0.05). AVLP administration also maintained intestinal barrier function by the upregulation of ZO-1 protein expression (p < 0.05). In addition, high-throughput sequencing analysis showed that AVLP possessed a great regulatory effect on the growth of Adlercreutzia, Clostridium, Streptococcus, Parabacteroides, Helicobacter, Odoribacter, and Alistipes (p < 0.05, LDA score > 2). The correlation analysis revealed that the protective effects against colitis of AVLP were highly correlated with intestinal bacterium regulation. Introduction: Despite the important clinical significance, limited data on the joint contribution of prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) to preeclampsia, the second leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide. This study aimed to estimate the risk of preeclampsia by GWG among women with varied prepregnancy BMI. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data of 117 738 singleton pregnant women aged 18--49 years from 150 maternity hospitals in China between 2015 and 2018. GWG was calculated as the measured weight at the time of preeclampsia assessment minus prepregnancy weight ;GWG velocity was calculated as the GWG divided by the gestational age at weighing. The nonlinear associations of GWG with preeclampsia were examined by restricted cubic spline regression analysis according to prepregnancy BMI. The association of the GWG categories with preeclampsia was further examined by performing robust Poisson regression stratified by the prepregnancy BMI categories. Results: Among participants, 2426 (2.06%) were diagnosed with preeclampsia. Compared to women with normal BMI, those who were overweight and obese had 1.92-fold (95%CI, 1.73--2.14) and 5.06-fold (95%CI, 4.43--5.78) increased risks for preeclampsia, respectively. The association of GWG velocity with preeclampsia was presented as a J-shaped curve with the varied inflexion point (where the rate of preeclampsia was 2%), which was 0.54, 0.38, and 0.25 kg/week in women with normal BMI, overweight, and obesity, respectively; a steep risk rise was observed along with GWG velocity beyond the inflexion points. The overall adjusted relative risk for preeclampsia was calculated among women with the different GWG categories of GWG. Conclusions: The findings highlight that high prepregnancy BMI and exceed GWG contributed to increased risk of preeclampsia with a superimposed effect and underscore the need to optimize the recommendations for GWG for women with different prepregnancy BMI. Preeclampsia (PE) is a common and serious pregnancy-specific disorder, which is closely linked with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate whether maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) was associated with preeclampsia and its phenotypes. In this prospective study, 32,531 women with singleton pregnancies were finally included. Compared with women with normal pre-pregnancy BMI, women with overweight and obesity were at increased risk of PE (RR = 1.62, 95%CI: 1.57–1.66; RR = 2.04, 95%CI: 1.97–2.11, respectively), while those who were underweight had a lower risk of PE (RR = 0.84, 95%CI: 0.81–0.88). When compared with women who gained adequate GWG, pregnant women with inadequate GWG and excessive GWG had an increased risk of PE (RR = 1.15, 95%CI: 1.12–1.19; RR = 1.56, 95%CI: 1.52–1.60, respectively). The observed increased risk was generally similar for mild-, severe-, early- and late-onset PE, and the reduced risk was similar for severe- and late-onset PE. No significant interactions between GWG and pre-pregnancy BMI on the risk of PE were identified (p-interaction > 0.05). In conclusion, pre-pregnancy overweight or obesity and excessive GWG have established risk factors for PE, and that the potential risk may vary according to PE phenotypes. Coccidiosis, which is caused by Eimeria species, results in huge economic losses to the poultry industry. Arbor Acres (AA) broilers and yellow-feathered broilers are the dominant broilers in northern and southern China, respectively. However, their susceptibility to coccidiosis has not been fully compared. In this study, the susceptibility of yellow-feathered broilers, AA broilers and Lohmann pink layers to E. tenella was evaluated based on mortality rate, relative body weight gain rate, intestinal lesion score, oocyst output, anticoccidial index (ACI), and cecum weight and length. The yellow-feathered broilers were shown to produce significantly fewer oocysts with higher intestinal lesion score compared to AA broilers, which had the highest growth rates and ACI scores. Subsequently, changes in the cecal microbiota of the 3 chicken lines before and after high-dose infection (1 × 104 oocysts) with E. tenella were determined by 16S rRNA sequencing. The results showed that composition of the microbiota changed dramatically after infection. The abundance of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes in the infected chickens decreased, and Proteobacteria increased significantly among the different chicken lines. At the genus level, Escherichia increased significantly in all 3 groups of infected chickens, but Lactobacillus decreased to 0% in the infected yellow-feathered broilers. The results of the study indicate that the susceptibility to E. tenella varies among the 3 chicken lines, and that changes in intestinal microbiota by E. tenella -infection among the different chicken lines had a similar trend, but to different degrees. Simple Summary: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is based on ancient Chinese medical principles. In China, these medicines have played a marked role in treating various diseases and maintaining human health for thousands of years. TCM is also increasingly considered a potential alternative to the use of antibiotics in pig production and has attracted a great deal of research interest because it is simple, convenient, cheap, and effective. However, there are few studies on the effects of dietary TCM supplementation on the gut microbiota and the apparent nutrient digestibility of weaned piglets. In our study, dietary Fructus mume and Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi improved growth performance and increased the apparent ether extract (EE) digestibility by modulating gut microbial composition and structure, favoring the health of weaned piglets. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has long been demonstrated to exert a therapeutic effect on various diseases and has been used as a substitute for antibiotics in pig production. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between the intestinal microbiota and apparent nutrient digestibility when weaned piglet diets are supplemented with TCM. One hundred and sixty-two 25-day-old weaning piglets were housed in an environmentally controlled nursery facility and fed a basal diet (control group, n = 54) or a TCM complex (Fructus mume 1%, Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi 3%) (TCM group, n = 54), or a fermented diet with a complex of these two TCMs (F-TCM group, n = 54). Compared with the control group, in the TCM and F-TCM groups, the average daily gain (ADG) increased (p < 0.05), the F:G ratio and diarrhea rate decreased (p < 0.05), and the apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM) and ether extract (EE) of weaned piglets increased (p < 0.05). Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were the predominant phyla, representing approximately 95% of all sequences. The abundance of four genera and 10 OTUs (belonging to Ruminococcaceae_UCG-014, Lachnoclostridium, Prevotellaceae_NK3B31 group, Prevotella_1) were negatively correlated with apparent EE digestibility (p < 0.05). The results suggest that weaned piglets fed with antibiotic-free diets supplemented with Fructus mume and Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi gained more weight and were healthier. When added to the diet, the complex of these two TCMs may have a direct impact on apparent EE digestibility by modifying the gut microbial composition, which favors the health of weaned piglets. This study was conducted to investigate whether the combination of garlic oil and cooked chilli oil is worth using for pigeon production in the context of a total ban on antibiotics in feed additives in China. Two hundred female white king pigeons aged 23 days were randomly divided into five groups with ten replicates (four birds each). In the 47 days trial, the control group was fed with a basal diet, treatment groups were given a basal diet supplemented with 20 mg/kg neomycin sulphate or 2 g/kg corresponding oil (garlic oil or cooked chilli oil or their mixture) respectively. The mixed oil showed obvious antibacterial activity against gram‐positive bacterium and its minimal bactericidal concentration against St. aureus, Salmonella and Escherichia coli were all no more than 1.0 mg/ml. In the feeding experiment, pigeons feed with garlic oil with strong bacteriostatic activity had lower FCR and better protein metabolism, and chilli oil showed strong effects of promoting feed intake and weight gain on pigeons but increased serum glucose and lipid content. Compared with the control and the antibiotic group, the mixed oil got increased growth performance, less drip loss of meat, better protein metabolism promoting, and more complete intestinal structure of pigeon. In addition, the breast meat in the mixed oil group had higher total points in the sensory test. The mixed oil combined the strong bacteriostasis of garlic oil with the feeding promotion effect of cooked chilli oil, it improved the comprehensive performance of pigeons and had the feasibility to be popularized as a non‐antibiotic strategy in pigeon production. Introduction: Previous studies had reported the impact of weight changes in middle age on the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the results were inconsistent. In present study, we aimed to investigate the impact of a 4-year weight change on the risk of CVD in middle-aged and elderly Chinese individuals. Methods: Using nationally representative data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, 7,530 participants (age: 58.2 ± 8.9 years) were included. Weight change was calculated by subtracting weight at baseline from that at 4-year follow-up. Weight change over 4 years was divided into 5 categories (loss ≥5 kg; loss 2–5 kg; stable (change ≤2 kg); gain 2–5 kg; and gain ≥5 kg). Results: During the follow-up period, a total of 758 respondents experienced CVD (including 319 stroke and 477 cardiac events). The multivariable ORs of CVD for gain ≥5 kg compared to stable weight (change ≤2 kg) was 1.50 (95% CI, 1.14–1.97) versus 1.41(1.09–1.83) for losing ≥5 kg. Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression model with restricted cubic splines showed a U-shaped association between weight change and the risk of CVD (p for nonlinearity <0.001). The significant associations did not change in subgroup and sensitivity analysis. Weight change was also associated with higher risk of stroke and cardiac events. Conclusion: Weight changes (weight gain or loss more than 5 kg) during middle age were associated with an increased risk of CVD in middle-aged and elderly Chinese individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
