Isorhamnetin (ISO) is a phenolic compound belonging to flavonoid family, showcasing important in vitro pharmacological activities such as antitumor, anti-inflammation, and organ protection. ISO is predominantly extracted from Hippophae rhamnoides L. This plant is well-known in China and abroad because of its "medicinal and food homologous" characteristics. As a noteworthy natural drug candidate, ISO has received considerable attention in recent years owing to its low cost, wide availability, high efficacy, low toxicity, and minimal side effects. To comprehensively elucidate the multiple biological functions of ISO, particularly its antitumor activities and other pharmacological potentials, a literature search was conducted using electronic databases including Web of Science, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus. This review primarily focuses on ISO's ethnopharmacology. By synthesizing the advancements made in existing research, it is found that the general effects of ISO involve a series of in vitro potentials, such as antitumor, protection of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular, anti-inflammation, antioxidant, and more. Tianfu peanut series represents a prominent category in China and recognized as the primary cultivar within the peanut-producing region of Sichuan Basin. To comprehend the phylogeny of Tianfu peanut varieties and the evolution of key agronomic and economic traits, we conducted an analysis on the pedigree relationship and evolutionary trends of 37 main Tianfu peanut varieties, focusing on 14 essential agronomic and economic characteristics. Our findings revealed that these 37 varieties originated from 55 nuclear ancestor parents and 15 cytoplasmic ancestor parents, predominatly including Luojiangjiwo, Fuhuasheng, and Xiongyue 1. Among the 52 related direct parents predominately comprising bred varieties and intermediate materials, 34 were derived from Sichuan Basin, accounting for approximately 65.38% of all parentage combinations. Notably, variety improvement predominantly occurred through crossbreeding techniques, with "bred variety x intermediate materials" combinations representing the highest proportion at 40.63%. While there were no significant quality attributes, pod yield significantly increased due to breeding efforts; additionally, a few oleic acid and high oil varieties were successfully developed. Moving forward, our focus lies in transforming general common oleic acid varieties into specialized high oleic acid variants suitable for edible oil production or processing while preserving the traditional characteristics associated with medium-small seed size typical to Tianfu peanuts -- thus meeting diverse demands for superior-quality Tianfu peanut cultivars in this new era. Information disclosure, participatory governance, and collaborative innovation are open government data's (OGD) main goals. Understanding the preconditions that enable the efficient and effective implementation of OGD initiatives is essential for achieving their overall objectives. Therefore, determining its influencing factors helps improve platform quality, prevent misunderstanding, and realize the purpose of OGD. Based on the literature, this study established a user-oriented conceptual model of OGD into which technology acceptance theory was integrated. This model constructed a data analysis model with the number of downloads of OGD platform data as the response variable and the explanatory variables comprising OGD quality score, linked data density, time to inception, and five others. Sixty-one cases of OGD platforms in Chinese prefecture-level cities were analyzed. The results indicated that the effectiveness of OGD was positively correlated with OGD quality score, time to inception, and the number of employees in the case cities. Network density and average disposable income of citizens had non-significant impacts on effectiveness. Strategies for improving the effectiveness of OGD platforms in China were discussed. This study tested cross cultural measurement equivalence of three identity constructs by testing the factor invariance among participants from four nations. Data from measures of identity exploration, commitment, and distress were collected from university students in Mainland China (n = 85), Taiwan (n = 117), Japan (n = 117), and the United States (n = 223) using the Ego Identity Process Questionnaire (EIPQ) and the Identity Distress Scale (IDS). Invariance was not found for the Exploration subscale of the EIPQ, and only partial invariance was found for the Commitment subscale. The Identity Distress Scale did demonstrate invariance across all four samples. Differences varied by degree of Westernization (globalization) of the cultures under study. The results question the cross cultural validity of the EIPQ, particularly the identity exploration subscale. Results are discussed in terms of avenues for improving the cross cultural validity of assessments of identity constructs and implications for interventions that target identity processes to promote positive youth development.

This paper establishes a predictive relationship between financial vulnerability and volatility in emerging stock markets. Focusing on China and India and utilizing GARCH-MIDAS models, we show that incorporating financial vulnerability can substantially improve the forecasting power of standard macroeconomic fundamentals (output growth, inflation and monetary policy interest rate) for stock market volatility. While the Internet has been profoundly changing how people participate in politics and is reshaping their political expressions in authoritarian countries, its exact effects remain ambiguous. This paper studies how Internet access and use influence public trust in local officials in authoritarian China. By using two-period panel survey data and combining difference-in-difference with propensity score matching, we find that, compared to Internet non-users, the Internet new-users show significantly lower political trust in local government officials. Further empirical evidence indicates that its causal mechanism primarily lies in the macro-structure of urban-rural heterogeneity and the micro-process of people's changing cognition and raised expectations. Our results substantially strengthen the argument that the diffusing power of the Internet is weakening the political legitimacy of authoritarian regimes like China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gut microbiota influences nutrient metabolism and immunity of animal hosts. Better understanding of the composition and diversity of gut microbiota contributes to conservation and management of threatened animals both in situ and ex situ. In this study, we applied 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to evaluate the composition and diversity of the fecal bacterial community of four gibbon genera (Family Hylobatidae) at four Chinese zoos. The results showed that the dominant bacterial phyla were Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria and dominant families were Prevotellaceae (Bacteroidetes), Spirochaetaceae (Spirochaetes) and Ruminococcaceae (Firmicutes) in the gut of all gibbons. Both captive site and host genus had significant effects on the relative abundance of dominant bacteria and structure of gut bacterial community. We found that captive site and host genus did not solely impact gut bacterial diversity, but the interaction between them did. This study provides basic knowledge for gut microbiota of all four gibbon genera and contributes to management and conservation of captive gibbons. Rhododendron datiandingense is newly reported and endemic to China. The genome of R. datiandingense is 207,311 bp in length, including a large single-copy region of 190,689 bp and a small single-copy region of 2582 bp, a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRA) of 7020 bp each. The genome encodes 110 genes, comprising 77 protein-coding genes, four ribosomal RNA genes, and 29 transfer RNA genes. Repeat analysis revealed 62 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) in the genome. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that R. datiandingense is clearly separated from the other Rhododendron species and shown in the basal position. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To compare balance ability between elderly individuals who practiced Tai-Chi-Chuan (TCC) for average 9.64 years and elderly individuals who did not practice TCC and its relationship with lower extremity muscle strength and ankle proprioception. Methods: Twenty-five elderly volunteers were divided into two groups according to their TCC practcing experience. Sixteen were TCC group and the other nine were control population. Subjects completed a static balance test and ankle proprioception test using a custom-designed evaluation system, and concentric and eccentric knee extensor and flexor muscle strength tests. Subjects stood on the plate form to measure the proprioception in functional standing position which was differed from the previous studies. Multiple linear regressions were also used to predict the important factor affecting balance. Results: TCC group performed better than the control group in balance, proprioception, and muscle strength of lower extremity. The proprioception was the most important factor related to balance ability and it can be accounted for explaining 44% of variance in medial-lateral sway direction, and 53% of variance in antero-posterior sway direction. The proprioception may be a more important factor which affecting the balance ability. Background: Staphylococcus aureus, particularly methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), is an important cause of pyogenic skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs). The aim of present study is to investigate the molecular characteristic of Staphylococcus aureus isolates isolated from the pus samples from the patients with purulent skin and soft tissue infections in Wenzhou, China. Methods: Between December 2002 and June 2008, a total of 111 nonduplicate S. aureus isolates were collected from the pus samples of the patients with SSTIs in a teaching hospital in Wenzhou, China. All the tested isolates were confirmed as S. aureus using a Staph SPA agglutination kit, Gram's stain and a Vitek-60 microbiology analyzer. The homology among the tested isolates was determined by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was used to determine the sequence types (STs) of the selected isolates. The genotypes of SCCmec were determined by a multiplex PCR in the MRSA isolates. Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) genes and mecA were also determined by another multiplex PCR. Results: Among the 111 S. aureus isolates, 48 and 63 isolates were community-acquired and hospital-acquired respectively. Sixty isolates were confirmed as MRSA harboring mecA detected by PCR. A total of 32 PFGE clonal types were obtained by PFGE, with 10 predominant patterns (types A to J). Twenty-five different STs including ST398 and three novel STs were found among 51 selected isolates. The main STs were ST239, ST1018, ST59, ST7 and ST88. Of 60 MRSA isolates, SCCmec II, III, IV and SCCmec V were found in three, 50, three and two isolates, respectively. The positive rates of PVL genes in overall isolates, HA-isolates, CA-isolates, MRSA isolates and MSSA isolates were 23.4% (26/111), 20.6% (13/63), 27.1% (13/48), 21.7% (13/60) and 25.5% (13/51), respectively. Eight (33.3%, 8/24) of 24 CA-MRSA isolates and 5 (13.9%, 5/36) of 36 HA-MRSA isolates were positive for PVL genes. ST239-MRSA-SCCmecIII and ST1018-MRSASCCmecIII clones were found to be main clones and spread between community and hospital. Conclusion: S. aureus isolates causing SSTIs showed considerable molecular heterogeneity and harbored high prevalence of PVL genes. Although mistakes may have considerable potential for learning, previous research has emphasized that organizational members are often defensive when their mistakes are pointed out and will even continue with their present course of action despite growing costs. Recent research has shown that team-level variables, such as psychological safety and shared mental model, can help overcome barriers to learning from mistakes. Structural equation analyses on teams working in a sample of organizations in Shanghai, China, suggested that teams were able to learn from their mistakes to the extent that they took a problem solving orientation. This orientation in turn was based on developing cooperative but not competitive goals within the team. Although competitive and independent goals induce blaming, blaming itself was not significantly related to learning. Blaming, especially when conducted openly, may hold individual team members accountable as well as provoke defensiveness. Findings empirically link the theory of cooperation and competition with the organizational learning literature. The impacts of environmental pollution extend beyond the issue of health. Using Chinese survey and administrative data, this study sheds new light on the political costs of environmental pollution. We show that citizens' trust in government officials declines significantly with higher levels of measured pollution, perceptions of increased pollution, and a greater degree of willingness to support environmental protection. Political trust is particularly low when measured as well as perceived pollution are severe. However, the effect of greater willingness to support environmental protection on the erosion of political trust is independent of measured pollution. Our findings suggest that there is a tipping point at which legitimacy acquired primarily through economic achievements could be undermined by environmental degradation, which is a byproduct of economic achievements. It is imperative for the Chinese government to achieve a balance between fast-paced growth and environmental sustainability, to pay attention to the potential political consequences of environmental issues, and to permit more public dialogues and deliberations on the topic of environmental governance. • Environmental pollution is shown to be politically costly in China. • Political trust declines with greater pollution, both measured and perceived. • Environmental perceptions interact with measured pollution in affecting political trust. • Political trust declines with greater willingness to support environmental protection. • Willingness to support environmental protection is independent of measured pollution in affecting political trust. Background: Short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS) was caused by novel goose parvovirus (NGPV)--a variant of goose parvovirus (GPV). Ducks infected with NGPV shows clinical signs including growth retardation and protrusion of the tongue from an atrophied beak. SBDS outbreak was first reported at the northern coastal provinces of China during 2015 and it was again reported in Sichuan, an inland province of China in 2016. The disease caused a huge economic loss in Chinese duck feeding industry. Results: The SD15 strain of NGPV was isolated from liver and intestinal tract tissue samples of infected ducks. Real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) was used to estimate viral load in embryonated eggs and cells infected with adapted virus. The data showed that duck embryo fibroblasts (DEFs) were permissive to NGPV, while goose embryo fibroblasts (GEFs) cells were not, and the copy numbers of SD15 in the allantoic fluid of infected eggs remained at 105.0–106.5 copies/ml. The adaption procession of the virus was determined via qPCR, and viral proliferation was detected through indirect fluorescent antibody assay (IFA) in DEFs. It was further determined that viral copy numbers peaked at 96 h post-inoculation (hpi), which is the best time to harvest the virus in DEFs. Cytotoxic effects and cell death were observed at 72 hpi in SD15 infected DEFs, yet SD15 did not induce apoptosis. Conclusions: The growth characteristics of SD15 strain of NGPV determined would be beneficial for further molecular characterization of these viruses and develop potential vaccines if required. Populations of Balanophora from southern China are often identified by local botanists as B. laxiflora based on their long cylindric male inflorescence, subsessile male flowers with slender rudimentary bracts, and subdiscoid synandria. In this study, we clarify the identity of seven such populations based on morphological characters and phylogenetic analysis using nuclear 18S and ITS ribosomal DNA sequences. We confirmed the occurrence of dioecious populations of B. yakushimensis and two previously unrecognized species, which we describe here as B. parajaponica and B. appressa. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that B. parajaponica, B. yakushimensis, B. appressa, B. laxiflora, and the agamospermic B. japonica, formed a well resolved clade, viz. the B. laxiflora clade. The four dioecious species, although highly similar in the morphology of male inflorescence and flowers, can be separated by leaf morphology and arrangement, ovary color, and arrangement of female flowers. Air pollution is more than an environmental or health issue. Our findings suggest that Chinese citizens exposed to more industrial sulfur dioxide (SO 2) and dust emissions are less likely to be satisfied with environmental administration. Chinese citizens living with poorer air quality also tend to be dissatisfied with law enforcement. Last, perceptions of air pollution are affected by measured industrial emissions and shape citizen satisfaction. In sum, this paper provides evidence that air pollution corrodes citizen satisfaction via environmental perceptions. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infects over 95% of the global population and is strongly associated with various autoimmune diseases. Anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) serve as valuable laboratory biomarkers for screening and supporting the diagnosis of various autoimmune diseases. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of EBV infection and its association with ANA. This retrospective study employed standard indirect immunofluorescence assay to determine ANA levels, EBV-specific immunofluorescence assay, or plasma EBV-DNA testing. Demographic data including gender and age were collected to observe variations in EBV infection status and ANA positivity rates among different populations. Incorporating 6492 hospitalized patients who underwent ANA antibody spectrum testing, it was observed that serum positivity rates gradually increased with age. The overall serum positivity rate of ANA in females (25.14%) was significantly higher than that in males (13.76%). Among hospitalized patients undergoing EBV-DNA testing, adults aged 21 to 40 years were least affected by EBV, with a positivity rate of 11.96%; however, as age increased, the positivity rate gradually increased. Among the 5225 patients undergoing EBV antibody spectrum testing, ANA-positive patients exhibited significantly higher serum positivity rates for Epstein-Barr nuclear antigen 1 immunoglobulin G, Epstein-Barr virus early antigen immunoglobulin G, Epstein-Barr virus early antigen immunoglobulin A, and Epstein-Barr virus viral capsid antigen immunoglobulin A antibodies compared to ANA-negative patients (P < .001; P < .001; P = .013; P < .001). The EBV-DNA positivity rate in ANA-positive patients was also significantly higher than in ANA-negative patients, yielding the same conclusion (P = .012). The positivity rates of ANA antibodies in patients with past EBV infection and reactivation were significantly higher than those in uninfected patients (P < .001; P = .006). The positivity rate of ANA antibodies in reactivated patients was significantly higher than that in primary infected patients and those with past infections (P < .001; P < .001). Among ANA-positive patients, the positivity rates of EBV antibody spectrum and EBV-DNA were higher compared to ANA-negative patients. Zidovudine/lamivudine tablets are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors that are used to treat human immunodeficiency virus. The objective of this study was to investigate the bioequivalence and pharmacokinetics (PKs) of test and reference preparations of zidovudine/lamivudine tablets in healthy Chinese subjects. We designed a randomized, open, single-center, single-dose, 2-crossover experiment with a 7-day washout period involving 20 healthy subjects. The subjects were given a single dose of the test or reference preparation after fasting overnight for 10 hours. Blood samples were subsequently collected at scheduled time points from 0 hour (preadministration) up to 24 hours postadministration. The plasma concentrations of zidovudine and lamivudine were determined by a validated ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare differences in the mean values of key PK parameters between the 2 preparations. Bioequivalence was evaluated by 2 one-sided t-tests and 90% confidence intervals (CIs) of the geometric mean ratio (GMR). In total, 19 of the 20 subjects completed the trial. Based on the analysis of PK parameters, the relative bioavailability of zidovudine and lamivudine was 101.1% ± 2.0% and 100.3% ± 1.5%, respectively. ANOVA found no significant difference in primary PK parameters when compared between the 2 formulations, and the 90% CIs of the GMR of the 2 formulations were within the bioequivalence margins of 80%-125%. No serious adverse events occurred. Thus, we confirmed that the 2 preparations were bioequivalent in healthy Chinese volunteers. This research is about constructing and evaluating China's older-adult care services smart supply chain., Methods: Based on the research results of previous scholars, this paper divides the Sun construction of the smart supply chain of China endowment service into four aspects: policy aspect, economic aspect, social aspect, and technical aspect; the four significant elements are divided into the first-level indicators, and 16 second-level indicators are divided under the first-level indicators. The importance and satisfaction of each evaluation index were obtained by distributing questionnaires to the managers who study the supply chain and the employees who are related to the old-age service., Results and Discussion: After the reliability analysis, the importance-performance analysis (IPA) quadrant analysis chart of the evaluation index was constructed using importance-performance analysis. Aim: Previous studies have shown that silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1) expression is elevated in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. However, whether gene polymorphisms in SIRT1 gene associated with RA in a Chinese Han population remains to be discussed., Method: In this case-control study, 529 RA patients and 700 healthy controls were selected, and association of 11 SIRT1 gene polymorphisms (rs12415800, rs3740051, rs932658, rs3740053, rs7895833, rs10509291, rs33957861, rs7069102, rs2273773, rs3818292, rs1467568) with RA susceptibility was evaluated., Results: Frequency of GA+GG genotype of rs3740051 in RA patients was significantly lower than that in healthy controls (P = .037). Frequencies of GC and GC+GG genotypes of rs7069102 were significantly lower than those in healthy controls (P = .036, P = .047). Frequencies of GA and GA+GG genotypes of rs1467568 were lower in RA patients as compared to those in healthy controls (P = .011, P = .013). For rs2273773, RA patients who carried the T allele had higher number of tender joints than patients who carried the C allele (P = .033). Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a complicated rheumatic autoimmune disease. Lectin, galactoside-binding soluble, 2 (LGALS2), LGALS3 and LGALS9, three members of the galectin family, play potential roles in autoimmune diseases, including RA. However, association of genetic polymorphisms of LGALS2, LGALS3 and LGALS9 with RA risk in a Southern Chinese Han population has not been elucidated. A case-control study was conducted herein, including 500 RA patients and 650 healthy individuals of Southern Chinese Han origin. Twelve single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including rs7291467 for the LGALS2 gene, rs4644, rs4652, rs1009977, rs2274273 and rs17128183 for the LGALS3 gene, and rs4795835, rs3763959, rs4239242, rs3751093, rs732222 and rs4794976 for the LGALS9 gene, were genotyped. Polymorphisms were genotyped using the KASP method. Frequencies of rs1009977 genotype TG and rs3751093 genotype GA of LGALS3 gene were significantly different between RA patients and healthy controls (P = 0.049, P = 0.033). Allele T and genotypes TT and TT + TG of rs4794976 for LGALS9 gene were significantly correlated with RA risk (P = 0.017, P = 0.012, P = 0.041). Subgroup analysis revealed that rs1009977, rs2274273 and rs17128183 polymorphisms of LGALS3 gene and rs4795835 polymorphism of LGALS9 gene were correlated with several RA clinical manifestations (all P < 0.05). In addition, haplotype GCGTT showed an increased risk for RA (OR = 1.216, 95% CI: 1.028-1.438, P = 0.023), whereas haplotype GCGTG showed a reduced risk for RA susceptibility (OR = 0.779, 95% CI: 0.625-0.971, P = 0.026). A new species of xenodermatid snake, Achalinus yunkaiensis J. Wang, Y. Li Y.Y. Wang, sp. nov. was described based on a series of specimens collected from Dawuling Forestry Station located in the Yunkai Mountains of western Guangdong Province. It can be distinguished from known congeners by a significant genetic divergence at the mitochondrial CO1 gene fragment examined (p-distance ≥ 12.0%) and the following combination of characters: (1) dorsal scales strongly keeled, in 23 rows throughout the body, the most outer row on each side smooth and significantly enlarged; (2) tail relatively shorter, TaL/TL ratio 18.5-20.0%; (3) maxillary teeth 20-22; (4) length of suture between internasals subequal to that between the prefrontals; (5) nasal divided into two sections by nasal cleft, posterior one half as long as anterior; (6) loreal elongated, nearly twice as wide as high; (7) supralabials six; (8) infralabials six; (9) temporals 2+2+3 (rarely 2+2+4), the two anterior temporals in contact with eye; (10) ventrals 151-162, subcaudals 49-56 arranged in single row, not paired; (11) cloacal entire; (12) uniform brown (in adults) or black (in juveniles) above, tinged weakly iridescent, with a longitudinal dark-colored vertebral line; (13) light brown (in adults) or greyish white (in juveniles) beneath; and (14) dorsum with a longitudinal dark brown vertebral stripe from posterior margin of parietals to tail tip. Currently, 13 species are known in the genus Achalinus, with seven from mainland China.

A new sciaenid fish, Johnius taiwanensis, is described from the southeast coast of mainland China from Zhejiang to Guangdong, Hong Kong, and west coast of Taiwan. Johnius taiwanensis sp. nov. can be distinguished from other Johnius species by having a grayish dorsal half of body divided by a clear line from a whitish ventral half, and a black spot at the dorsal half of pectoral-fin axil, appearing as a distinct dot at the most dorsal point of the pectoral-fin base. First dorsal fin black tipped, other fins pale to dusky but never darkly pigmented. The species lacks distinctly enlarged teeth on upper and lower jaws. Body scales ctenoid, moderately large, with five or six rows between first dorsal-fin origin and lateral line. It is one of the most abundant sciaenids found in the shallow coastal waters (20 m) of southeast mainland China and the west coast of Taiwan. It has often been misidentified as J. macrorhynus in the region. Phylogenetic analysis from all 27 sciaenid species found in Chinese waters based on the complete COI and 16S rRNA gene sequences confirmed that the genus Johnius is monophyletic and J. taiwanensis is placed as a sister species of J. trewavasae. Acoustic analysis has shown that J. taiwanensis produces a unique sound among fishes in Taiwan coastal waters.

To explore the effects of different disturbance patterns on restoring the health of an infected stand, concentrated disturbance of not cutting trees before 10 years after infection, mode-rate disturbance of cutting infected pine trees, and strong distrubance of cutting infected pine trees, the neighboring trees and poorly growing pine trees were compared in a pure Pinus massomiana plantation infected by Bursaphelenchus xylophlius in Anji, Zhejiang, China. After 16 years, the importance values of P. massoniana in the three treatments were: concentrated disturbance &gt; mode-rate disturbance &gt; strong disturbance. However, the importance values of broad-leaved trees showed the opposite trend. Compared with the concentrated disturbance, the average DBH of P. massoniana in the moderate and strong disturbance treatments were 1.2 and 1.7 times higher, respectively, and those of broad-leaved species were 1.3 and 1.9 times higher, respectively. The average height of pine trees in the moderate and strong disturbance treatments increased 1.5 and 2.0 times, respectively, and those of broad-leaved species 1.2 and 1.8 times, respectively. The tree volume per hectare in moderate and strong disturbance treatments were 5.2 and 3.8 times that of concentrated disturbance treatment, respectively. In the moderate and strong disturbance treatments, the number of trees in each diameter class was greater than in the concentrated disturbance treatment. The stand diameter distribution in the multi-storied moderate and strong disturbance treatments followed an inverse J-shaped curve. The species richness and biodiversity were significantly higher in the mode-rate and strong disturbance treatments than in the concentrated disturbance treatment. The individual size inequality and structural complexity indices followed the order of moderate disturbance &gt; strong disturbance &gt; concentrated disturbance. Under moderate and strong disturbance treatments, the single-storied and evenly aged pure P. massoniana plantation became multi-storied and unevenly aged mixed stands. All the three disturbance patterns promoted the succession of broad-leaved trees, with the pace of succession in the order of strong disturbance &gt; moderate disturbance &gt; concentrated disturbance. In conclusion, moderate disturbance achieved better restoration. Thinning pure P. massoniana plantation could accelerate the succession of a mixed stand to enhance resistance against Bursaphelenchus xylophlius invasion.

A new species, Amolops yunkaiensis sp. nov. is described based on a series of specimens from Ehuangzhang Nature Reserve and Yunkaishan Nature Reserve, southwestern Guangdong Province, China. The new species can be distinguished from all known congeners by molecular divergence in the mitochondrial 16S rRNA, 12S rRNA and CO1 genes, and a combination of the following characters: relatively small body size, SVL 31.8-34.1 mm in adult males, 35.2-39.0 mm in adult females; numerous raised large warts on dorsum and flanks; dorsal body olive-brown or light brown with dark brown blotches; absence of vomerine teeth; absence of tarsal glands; presence of a pair of subgular vocal sacs, nuptial spines on the first finger, and sparse translucent tubercles on the lower jaw, forechest, posterior belly and ventral thigh in male. Hence, the genus Amolops contains 52 species, 29 of which occur in China.

Metformin has been demonstrated to prevent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Metformin acts mainly by phosphorylation of AMPK. However, the phosphorylation status of AMPK and its role in the prediction and prevention of HCC in cirrhotic patients remains unclear. The phosphorylation status of AMPK (Thr172) was determined by immunostaining in tissue microarrays of 426 cirrhotic liver tissues. Low expression of p-AMPK was observed in 94 (22.1%) cases. The median follow-up time was 87 months. HCC occurrence probability at 1/3/5/10 years after Hassab procedure was 3.1/9.6/13.8/30.6% in patients with p-AMPK low expression and 0/0.3/0.3/8% in patients with p-AMPK high expression, respectively. HCC occurrence risk was significantly higher in patients with p-AMPK low expression in univariable analysis (HR, 6.25; 95% CI: 3.36-11.60; P < 0.001) and multivariable analysis (HR, 6.0; 95% CI: 3.24-11.10; P < 0.001). An independent external cohort validated the significance of p-AMPK low expression. In addition, in vivo experiments demonstrated that AMPK activation status was negatively related to HCC occurrence and blocking autophagy by chloroquine counteracted the protective effect of AMPK phosphorylation. These results present novel insight into a critical predictive role of AMPK activation in hepatocarcinogenesis and AMPK activation seems to be a potential target for the prevention of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with liver cirrhosis.

Background/aims: This study aims to summarize the diagnosis and management experience of adult choledochal cyst (CC) patients and highlights our experience of reoperation cases., Methodology: The clinical data of 65 adult patients with CCs at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University between 2007 and 2011 were analyzed retrospectively., Results: According to Todani’s classification, there were 40 patients who belonged to type I, 1 patient to type II, 23 patients to type IVa, and 1 patient to type V cysts. Of all the patients, there were 24 patients who needed reoperation. Of the 24 patients, 17 patients had previously obtained erroneous diagnosis, 2 patients had undergone suboptimal treatment, and 5 patients had undergone definitive surgery. Forty-six patients underwent extrahepatic bile duct (EHBD) dilatation resection plus Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy (HJ), 16 patients underwent partial hepatectomy plus EHBD resection plus Roux-en-Y HJ, 1 patient underwent partial hepatectomy, 1 patient underwent external drainage only, and 1 patient underwent reconstruction of hepatoenteric anastomosis by excision of stenosis., Conclusions: Four reasons could account for reoperation: misdiagnosis, severe associated preoperative diseases, severe complications and inappropriate surgical procedures. Complete excision of the cyst including the intrahepatic part plus Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy is the ideal surgical strategy.

Background: Up to 40% of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease fail to respond to proton pump inhibitor therapy., Aims: To determine predictors of clinical response of proton pump inhibitor therapy., Methods: Consecutive patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease were enrolled prospectively. All patients underwent upper endoscopy and 24-h multichannel intraluminal impedance and pH monitoring before receiving esomeprazole 20 mg b.i.d. for 2 months. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the independent predictors of clinical response to proton pump inhibitor therapy., Results: A total of 204 patients with typical reflux symptoms were recruited and screened. Among them 153 patients (mean age 46.3 ± 10.6 years, 51.0% female) completed all the examinations and were assigned to proton pump inhibitor therapy. Ninety-five patients (62.1%) responded to acid suppression after 2 months. Multivariate logistic analysis showed that the predictor for response was pathological distal esophageal acid reflux (P = 0.001). The factors associated with proton pump inhibitor therapy failure were the presence of irritable bowel syndrome alone (P = 0.006), depression (P = 0.005), and overlap of irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia (P = 0.002)., Conclusions: The clinical response of acid suppression on gastroesophageal reflux disease could be predicted by clinical and pH parameters rather than impedance data., (Copyright © 2012 Editrice Gastroenterologica Italiana S.r.l. In order to reveal the population phylogenetic relationships and colonization history of Chinese endemic bat species Myotis davidii, a total of 126 samples from 14 populations in nationwide were collected in 2001-2009, taking the mitochondrial control region as the molecular marker. Based on the TCS network diagram of the mitochondrial DNA control region sequences, the 14 geographical populations were divided into three geographical regions, i.e., mid-east plain region, southwest plateau region, and south hills region. In the 53 haplotypes, the No. 14 in Zhejiang Province, No. 47 in Guizhou Province, and No. 50 in Guangdong Province were the ancestors in the three regions, respectively. Based on Geodis analysis, mismatch distribution analysis, and neutrality test, the population expansion events were found in mid-eastern plain region (76.12 and 79.17 ka BP) and southwest plateau (69.12 ka BP). In 61.24 ka BP, a long distance migration event originated from the southwest plateau region to the mid-east plain region occurred. The evidences of molecular biology, bionics, anatomy, and aerodynamics all revealed the long-distance migration capability of M. davidii.

Conclusion: Three-dimensional reconstruction of maximum intensity projection (MIP) might document objectively, stereoscopically and directly the minute structures of the membranous labyrinth and internal auditory meatus. In this study, we establish magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurement criteria of the inner ear in Chinese adults., Objective: The goal of this study was to provide an anatomic basis for otolosurgery and neurosurgery in Chinese adults., Materials and Methods: Sixteen healthy volunteer subjects were scanned by a GE-signa 1.5T MRI scanner. All original images were transferred to an MRI workstation and all the structures of the inner ear were reconstructed, rotated at various angles and measured with an MIP program., Results: Anatomic structures of the membranous labyrinth and internal auditory meatus were well demonstrated in MIP images in all volunteers. All inner ear structures including utricle, saccule, cochlear duct, internal auditory meatus and three semicircular ducts produced high intensity signals.

Objective: To study the seroprevalence of human T-cell leukaemia virus type I/II (HTLV-I/II) infection in adult population in the east coastal areas of Fujian and to explore the possible risk factors of HTLV-I/II., Methods: A total number of 3259 blood samples from drug users, sexually transmitted disease (STD) patients, prostitutes and blood donors for serologic assays during 1999 to 2002, were collected. All samples were screened for HTLV-I/II antibody, using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. All of the positive samples were confirmed by western blot (WB) kits. Statistical analysis was done by Epi software, and chi(2) test by Fisher's exact test. P value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant., Results: The overall seroprevalence rate of HTLV-I/II in healthy populations was 0.06% including, 0.32% in drug users, 0.58% in STD patients and prostitutes respectively. HTLV-II had not been found. The seropositive rates for HTLV-I in STD patients and prostitutes were significantly higher than the findings among healthy populations (P < 0.05). There were no different seroprevalence rates between drug users and healthy populations (P > 0.05). No significant changes in HTLV-I prevalence rates were found in the different age groups as well as in Fuzhou and Linde cities (P > 0.05)., Conclusion: The result suggested that in the east coastal areas of Fujian province, HTLV-I was the main prevalent virus. The seroprevalence of HTLV-I was very low, with no HTLV-II. Neither age nor gender seemed to be HTLV-I risk factor in the east coastal areas of Fujian province, but the increase of exposure to sex might be one.
