New graduate registered nurses (NGRNs) face a great challenge during the transition from school to clinical practice. We conducted a quasi-randomized controlled study to evaluate the effects of a new training mode for newly recruited NGRNs in a Chinese teaching hospital. A total of 150 NGRNs were recruited from a teaching hospital and assigned into two groups. The conventional training and a new training program were taken for the control group and the research group, respectively. At the end of the training, the two groups were evaluated and compared for theoretical knowledge and operation skills using a mutual-evaluation examination and the Chinese Registered Nurse Core Competency Scale. The scores of theoretical knowledge (88.4 vs. 81.7, p < 0.001) and operation skills (94.8 vs. 90.3, p < 0.001), and the total core competencies score (156.2 vs. 148.8, p < 0.05) in the research group were statistically significantly higher than those in the control group. Compared with the control group, the research group also had statistically significantly higher scores in education and consultation (2.47 vs. 2.40), clinical nursing (2.87 vs. 2.62), interpersonal relationship (2.56 vs. 2.43), and critical thinking and scientific research (2.78 vs. 2.61). The innovative pre-job training program for NGRNs conducted in Chinese clinical nursing skill training bases might significantly improve the training effects and is worthy of broader implementation.

To evaluate the earthquake disaster resistance capability of highway tunnels, it is necessary to study an index system for the earthquake disaster resistance capability of highway tunnels. This paper uses a literature research method. The damage of highway tunnels in 12 earthquake disasters recorded in detail in China and abroad was investigated. According to the types of hazard-beating bodies and damage forms, 17 seismic damage scenes of highway tunnels are classified. According to different damage scenes, the fault tree analysis model is used to identify the damage-causing factors. Combined with the industry standards, norms and research results related to the earthquake resistance of highway tunnels, the evaluation indices are analyzed from three perspectives: engineering geological factors, tunnel structural factors and operation management factors. According to the principle of index system construction, a four-level index system is constructed, which takes the earthquake disaster resistance capability of highway tunnels as the target layer; engineering geological factors, tunnel structural factors and operation management factors as the criterion layer indices; 12 indicators as the index layer and 35 specific indicators. The established index system for the earthquake disaster resistance capability of highway tunnels has strong scientific, rational and application value and can provide a reference for the evaluation of the earthquake disaster resistance capability of highway tunnels and can also provide important support for the safe operation and sustainable development of highway tunnels. Purpose: Soil contamination and solid waste accumulation pose significant risks to the safety of agricultural produce and residential areas. In China, coal gangue, a typical form of solid waste, is rich in valuable elements like silicon and aluminum, making it an ideal precursor for the synthesis of zeolite molecular sieves. This study focuses on transforming coal gangue into iron-enhanced X-type zeolite (Fe-NaX) molecular sieve and explores its potential in remediating lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) co-contaminated soil. Methods: Fe-NaX was synthesized from coal gangue in Sichuan using an alkaline melting hydrothermal method. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of Fe-NaX in remediation and assess its ecological risk, soil culture and acid rain leaching experiments were conducted. The microstructures of Fe-NaX were detected to explore its remediation mechanism. Results: The optimal Fe-NaX was synthesized at a 110 °C hydrothermal reaction temperature, a 1.5 mass ratio of NaOH and pretreated coal gangue (PCG), a 2.0 Si/Al molar ratio, and a 3.5 M alkalinity. Fe-NaX demonstrated outstanding performance in remediating Pb and Cd contaminated soil, with immobilizing efficiency for high bioavailability fractions of Pb and Cd at 44.4% and 21.9%, respectively. Even under acid rain stress, Fe-NaX was able to decrease the release of Pb and Cd in the soil by 42.3% and 59.6% respectively, with minimal ecological risk. Conclusion: This study, based on a "solid waste for soil-remediation" strategy, transforms coal gangue into Fe-NaX for use in soil remediation and holds great promise for the contaminated soil remediation and coal gangue comprehensive utilization. Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder that significantly benefits from early diagnosis for effective disease management and intervention. Despite advancements in medical technology, there remains a critical gap in the early and non-invasive detection of PD. Current diagnostic methods are often invasive, expensive, or late in identifying the disease, leading to missed opportunities for early intervention. Objective: The goal of this study is to explore the efficiency and accuracy of combining fNIRS technology with machine learning algorithms in diagnosing early-stage PD patients and to evaluate the feasibility of this approach in clinical practice. Methods: Using an ETG-4000 type near-infrared brain function imaging instrument, data was collected from 120 PD patients and 60 healthy controls. This cross-sectional study employed a multi-channel mode to monitor cerebral blood oxygen changes. The collected data were processed using a general linear model and β values were extracted. Subsequently, four types of machine learning models were developed for analysis: Support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbors (K-NN), random forest (RF), and logistic regression (LR). Additionally, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) technology was applied to enhance model interpretability. Results: The SVM model demonstrated higher accuracy in differentiating between PD patients and control group (accuracy of 85%, f1 score of 0.85, and an area under the ROC curve of 0.95). SHAP analysis identified the four most contributory channels (CH) as CH01, CH04, CH05, and CH08. Conclusion: The model based on the SVM algorithm exhibited good diagnostic performance in the early detection of PD patients. This paper aims to investigate the manufacturing strategies for the manufacturing systems in the context of 3D printing, referring to ecosystem-based manufacturing systems, rather than firm-based and network-based ones. A case study approach was adopted for this research, as the data was mainly collected via semi-structured interviews with staff members of companies in China. Besides the elements of strategic choices and manufacturing capabilities identified in the extant literature, this research verified three additional strategic choice elements (functional role, platform and solution) and identified two factors (platform openness and solution diversity) to classify an ecosystem-based manufacturing system. Meanwhile, four manufacturing capabilities of the ecosystem-based manufacturing system have been identified: collaborative manufacturing flexibility, rapid thriftiness ability, self-customisation and co-evolved design capability. The research results contribute to the area of manufacturing strategy via expanding its view from the firm and network levels to the ecosystem level. Meanwhile, the research results present operations managers with an understanding of the strategic choices and manufacturing capabilities of an ecosystem-based manufacturing system in the context of 3D printing. The water-level fluctuation zone of the lower Jinsha River Basin is a fragile ecosystem with limited water resources in the southwest of China. Soil water is critical for maintaining ecological balance and promoting the healthy development of animals and plants in this region. In this study, eight typical soil profiles were monitored for hydrochemistry in soil-soluble salt from upstream to downstream of the lower Jinsha River Basin. The results show that the soil water content was low and had a negative correlation coefficient with major ions in the soil-soluble phase. The soil-soluble salt is slightly alkaline, and Ca2+, Na+, SO42−, and HCO3− are important components for ions in a soluble phase. Major ions in soluble salt originate from various sources, including precipitation, anthropogenic input, silicate weathering, and carbonate weathering, and the contribution rates from each end member were 0.7%, 45.1%, 25.2%, and 29%, respectively. The ion composition in surface soil soluble salt is mainly influenced by precipitation and human activities, while the ions in the 0–50 cm soil layer originate from the precipitation input and water-rock interaction. In addition, rock weathering is a vital process for releasing ions into soil-soluble salt from 50 to 100 cm soil layer. Our findings provide important references for ion sources and the eco-hydrological process in limited water resources in the water-level fluctuation zone of the lower Jinsha River Basin. The imbalance of gut microbiota has been confirmed to have a close pathological and physiological correlation with obesity and metabolic syndrome. Ramulus Mori (Sangzhi) Alkaloids (SZ-A) derived from twigs of mulberry was approved by the National Medical Products Administration of China in 2020 for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. In addition to its hypoglycemic effect, previous studies have confirmed that SZ-A also alleviates high-fat diet-induced obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and ameliorates obesity-linked adipose tissue metabolism and inflammation, indicating the potential of SZ-A to regulate obesity and metabolic syndrome. However, whether SZ-A can improve obesity and metabolic syndrome by regulating gut microbiota and its metabolism profiles remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of SZ-A on gut microbiota in obese mice and to explore the association among changes in gut microbiota, obesity, and lipid metabolism. The results showed that oral administration of SZ-A could significantly reduce body weight, fat mass, and the level of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein in serum in obese mice induced by a high-fat diet. Interestingly, SZ-A also regulated gut microbiota and changed the fecal metabolite composition of obese mice. Compared with the high-fat diet group, the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroides changed at the phylum level and the abundance of Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia muciniphila significantly increased at the genus level in the SZ-A group. The gut microbiota of the SZ-A group was reshaped and the relative abundance of microbial genes in bile acid metabolism and fatty acid metabolism were altered, which was consistent with the metabolomics results. Additionally, SZ-A greatly enriched the number of goblet cells and reduced inflammatory colon injury and pro-inflammatory macrophage infiltration induced by a high-fat diet in obese mice. Background: Targeted therapy combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors is considered a promising treatment for primary advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Nevertheless, the difference between synchronous and asynchronous treatment of lenvatinib with programmed death receptor‐1 (PD‐1) inhibitor in advanced HCC is still unclear. The aim of this investigation is to evaluate the effectiveness of synchronous and asynchronous of lenvatinib and PD‐1 inhibitor on the advanced HCC beyond oligometastasis. Methods: In this study, 213 patients from four institutions in China were involved. Patients were split into two collections: (1) lenvatinib plus PD‐1 inhibitor were used synchronously (synchronous treatment group); (2) patients in asynchronous treatment group received PD‐1 inhibitor after 3 months of lenvatinib treatment prior to tumour progression. To analyse progression‐free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), efficacy and safety of patients in both groups, we employed propensity score matching (PSM). Results: The 6‐, 12‐ and 24‐month OS rates were 100%, 93.4% and 58.1% in the synchronous treatment group and 100%, 71.5% and 25.3% in the asynchronous treatment group, respectively. In contrast to the asynchronous treatment group, the group treated synchronously exhibited a substantially enhanced OS (hazard ratio [HR], 0.45; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.30–0.66; p <.001). The 6‐, 12‐ and 18‐month PFS rates were 82.6%, 42.6% and 10.8% in the synchronous treatment group and 63.3%, 14.2% and 0% in the asynchronous treatment group, respectively. A significant difference was observed in the PFS rate (HR, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.33–0.63; p <.001) between the two collections. Panzhihua, China, ranks third in the world in vanadium (V) and titanium (Ti) resources reserves. Due to the development and utilization of vanadium, vanadium enters the surrounding soil and groundwater, affecting the ecological environment and human health. In this study, humin (HM) was extracted from peat soil and modified with iron-based materials to get Fe-HM (Fe(NO3)3 and FeSO4). The properties of Fe-HM characterized by EA, NMR, SEM, EDS, BET, and FTIR showed larger specific surfaces and more oxygen-containing groups. Then, Fe-HM was applied to V-contaminated soil to investigate its immobilization effect. Applying HM/Fe-HM to vanadium-contaminated soils can alter soil properties, reduce the bioavailability of vanadium (23.5% to 21.0%(HM), 17.0% (Fe(NO3)3-HM), and 17.7%(FeSO4-HM)), and improve immobilization efficiency (40.0%(HM), 79.2%(Fe(NO3)3-HM), and 75.9%(FeSO4-HM)), thus achieving the aim of remediating vanadium-contaminated soils and reducing the risk of vanadium to the environment. Goose astrovirus (GAstV), an agent of fatal visceral gout in goslings, has been widely circulating in eastern China since 2017, but little is known about its genetic diversity and systematic evolution. In this study, we isolated and sequenced nine nearly full‐length GAstV genomes and conducted comprehensive genetic diversity and evolutionary analysis and compared them with other reported GAstV sequences. Our results indicated that two genotypic species of GAstV were circulating in China, and GAstV‐2 subgenotype II‐c had arisen as the dominant genotype in Shandong province and across the whole country. Multiple alignments of GAstV amino acid sequences revealed several characteristic mutations in GAstV‐2 II‐c strains, as well as additional residues in the nine new isolates which varied over time. Phylogenetic analysis of three open reading frames demonstrated different evolutionary histories. Evidence of natural recombination was also detected in GAstV, with most of the recombination occurring in the GAstV‐2 II‐c subgenotype. Molecular adaptation analyses revealed that the evolution of GAstV was shaped by strong negative selection, although a number of amino acids, which potentially affect host infection and cell entry, were subjected to positive pressure. Background: Little is known about the relation between perioperative inflammatory changes and long-term survival in cancer patients. The aim of the study was to assess the association of perioperative serum interleukin-6 (IL6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) levels with the 5-year overall survival in locally advanced gastric cancer.Methods: The 135 eligible patients in one center of Nanfang Hospital were retrieved from CLASS-01 trial (NCT01609309), an open-label, multicenter, randomized clinical noninferiority trial conducted at 14 centers in China. Serum IL6 and TNFα levels were tested before surgery, and on postoperative day (POD) 1, POD3, and POD5, respectively, referring to IL6_0, IL6_1, IL6_3, and IL6_5 and TNFα_0, TNFα_1, TNFα_3, and TNFα_5. Kaplan-Meier methods and COX models were used for survival analysis.Results: High levels of IL6_0 (≥3.67 pg/mL) and TNFα_0 (≥14.8 pg/mL) presented worse disease-free survival (DFS) (P = 0.0057 for IL6_0 and P = 0.0014 for TNFα_0) and overall survival (OS) (P = 0.0021 for IL6_0 and P = 0.0019 for TNFα_0). Both high IL6_0 and high IL6_5 levels indicated worse prognosis than other combinations (P = 0.0045 for DFS and P = 0.0022 for OS). In multivariate analysis, both high IL6_0 and high IL6_5 levels were significantly associated with poor DFS (HR = 4.29, 95% CI: 1.42-12.95, P = 0.01) and OS (HR = 4.11, 95% CI: 1.35-12.49, P = 0.013) after adjustment of tumor stage and TNFα_0. Also, high IL6_5 level was identified as the independent-related factor for postoperative infectious complications (OR = 2.69, 95% CI: 1.03-7.01, P = 0.043).Conclusions: Perioperative high serum IL6 and TNFα levels are negatively associated with 5-year survival outcomes in patients with locally advanced gastric cancer, indicating the potential survival benefits from perioperative anti-inflammatory treatment. Objective: To investigate the clinical features of multicentric reticulohistiocytosis (MRH).Methods: The clinical manifestations, laboratory examination results and histologic characteristics of eleven patients with MRH were collected and compared with those of 33 patients with rheumatoid arthritis.Results: In total, 72.7% of the MRH patients were women. The median age was 46 years (range 33-84 years). Diagnosed by specific pathologic features, all MRH patients exhibited cutaneous involvement. The dorsa of the hands, arms, face and auricle were the most commonly affected areas. Nodules were also located on the legs, scalp, trunk, neck, and even the hypoglossis and buccal mucosa. Ten MRH patients (90.9%) had symmetric polyarthritis. Compared with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, MRH patients were more likely to have distal interphalangeal joint (DIP) involvement (63.6% vs 24.2%, P = 0.017) and less likely to have elbow (36.4% vs 72.7%, P = 0.003), ankle (45.5% vs 93.9%, P < 0.001) and metacarpophalangeal joint (MCP) (36.4% vs 78.8%, P = 0.009) involvement. Positivity for rheumatoid factor (RF) (36.4% vs 84.6%, P = 0.001) and anti-CCP antibody (9.1% vs 81.8%, P = 0.000), as well as the median RF titer [43.8 (31.7-61.0) vs 175.4 (21.3-940.3), P = 0.021], in MRH patients was lower than in RA patients. Elevation of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) was also less common in MRH patients than in RA patients (36.4% vs 72.7%, P = 0.030). After treatment with median- to large-dose corticosteroids and disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, 8 patients achieved complete remission and 2 patients partial remission (skin lesions ameliorated, joint lesions not ameliorated).Conclusion: Always pathologically diagnosed, MRH is a systemic disease involving RA-like erosive polyarthritis and a specific distribution of skin nodules characterized by "coral beads". More DIP involvement and less elbow, ankle and MCP involvement are seen in MRH than in RA. In addition, less positivity and lower-titer RF, uncommon presence of anti-CCP antibodies and ESR elevation may be helpful to distinguish MRH from RA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chemical oxidation processes are widely used for the remediation of organically contaminated soils, but their potential impact on variable-valence and toxic metals such as chromium (Cr) is often overlooked. In this study, we investigated the risk of Cr(Ⅲ) oxidation in soils during the remediation of 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) contaminated soils using four different processes: Potassium permanganate (KMnO 4), Modified Fenton (Fe2+/H 2 O 2), Alkali-activated persulfate (S 2 O 8 2−/OH−), and Fe2+-activated persulfate (S 2 O 8 2−/Fe2+). Our results indicated that the KMnO 4 , Fe2+/H 2 O 2 , and S 2 O 8 2−/Fe2+ processes progressively oxidized Cr(III) to Cr(Ⅵ) during the 2-CP degradation. The KMnO 4 process likely involved direct electron transfer, while the Fe2+/H 2 O 2 and S 2 O 8 2−/Fe2+ processes primarily relied on HO• and/or SO 4 •- for the Cr(III) oxidation. Notably, after 4 h of 2-CP degradation, the Cr(VI) content in the KMnO 4 process surpassed China's 3.0 mg kg−1 risk screening threshold for Class I construction sites, and further exceeded the 5.7 mg kg−1 limit for Class II construction sites after 8 h. Conversely, the S 2 O 8 2−/OH− process exhibited negligible oxidation of Cr(III), maintaining a low oxidation ratio of 0.13%, as highly alkaline conditions induced Cr(III) precipitation, reducing its exposure to free radicals. Cr(III) oxidation ratio was directly proportional to oxidant dosage, whereas the Fe2+/H 2 O 2 process showed a different trend, influenced by the concentration of reductants. This study provides insights into the selection and optimization of chemical oxidation processes for soil remediation, emphasizing the imperative for thorough risk evaluation of Cr(III) oxidation before their application. In recent years, organizations across myriad industries have begun adopting novel digital technologies and, in doing so, fostered their digital transformation. This study examines the digital transformation in state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in China. We conducted comparative case studies on China Mobile and China Unicom, two typical and leading SOEs in China's telecommunications industry, to identify the company's transformation characteristics and how key factors impact the transformation process. This research also contributes to digital transformation literature and to the institutional theory. We develop a conceptual framework for analyzing enterprise digital transformation, and generate some theoretical prescriptions. The research findings conclude that, based on innovation in digital technology by generations, enterprise digital transformation on strategic positioning, value proposition (services and products), and value creation (assets and organizational structure) presents a process by stages; both institutional pressures and technological attraction impact how SOEs carry out digital transformation; different SOEs with different characteristics in value creation present different transformation process. Future research could use the framework as an analytical tool and draw upon the theoretical prescriptions to examine digital transformation in different kinds of organizations. At last, this research also offers practical insights for SOEs to carry out digital transformations and for governments to offer supportive institutional environment for this process. • This research contributes to digital transformation literature and institutional theory. Background: The benefits of adjuvant chemotherapy for elderly patients with gastric cancer (GC) remain unknown because elderly patients are underrepresented in most clinical trials. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and complications of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients > 65 years of age after laparoscopic D2 gastrectomy. Methods: This was a single-center retrospective cohort study of elderly patients (> 65 years) with stage II/III GC who underwent curative laparoscopic D2 gastrectomy with R0 resection between 2004 and 2018. The adjuvant chemotherapy regimens included monotherapy (oral capecitabine) and doublet chemotherapy (oral capecitabine plus intravenous oxaliplatin [XELOX] or intravenous oxaliplatin, leucovorin, and 5-fluorouracil [FOLFOX]). The data were retrieved from a prospectively registered database maintained at the Department of General Surgery in Nanfang Hospital, China. The patients were divided as surgery alone and surgery plus adjuvant chemotherapy (chemo group). The overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), chemotherapy duration, and toxicity were examined. Results: There were 270 patients included: 169 and 101 in the surgery and chemo groups, respectively. There were 10 (10/101) and six (6/101) patients with grade 3+ non-hematological and hematological adverse events. The 1−/3−/5-year OS rates of the surgery group were 72.9%/51.8%/48.3%, compared with 90.1%/66.4%/48.6% for the chemo group (log-rank test: P = 0.018). For stage III patients, the 1−/3−/5-year OS rates of the surgery group were 83.7%/40.7%/28.7%, compared with 89.9%/61.2%/43.6% for the chemo group (log-rank test: P = 0.015). Adjuvant chemotherapy was significantly associated with higher OS (HR = 0.568, 95%CI: 0.357–0.903, P = 0.017) and DFS (HR = 0.511, 95%CI: 0.322–0.811, P = 0.004) in stage III patients. Conclusions: This study suggested that adjuvant chemotherapy significantly improves OS and DFS compared with surgery alone in elderly patients with stage III GC after D2 laparoscopic gastrectomy, with a tolerable adverse event profile. Studies on trace element (TE) pollution in abiotic matrices have typically focused on water, sediment, and soil, either separately or in pairs. The importance of multi-media connectivity has been ignored. This study analyzed the concentrations of 6 TEs in three connected environmental compartments of a 28-km section of the lower reach of the Jinsha River. The ecological risk posed by TEs was higher in soil than in sediment. The contribution of exposure pathways to human health risk were ranked as ingestion > dermal contact > inhalation. An improved regional environmental risk index (RERI) method was then developed to evaluate the comprehensive risk on both ecology and human health caused by TEs. The average RERI value was generally higher in the wet season (0.42) than in the dry (0.41) and dry-to-wet transition seasons (0.08) because of the combined effects of the high TE concentrations in riparian soil and the long exposure time. Source apportionment indicated that industrial activities, weathering of parent rock, and agricultural activities were possible sources of TEs in this region. Cadmium (Cd) contamination in farmland is extensive in China. Thus, exploring a cost‐effective and practical approach to control Cd contamination and ensure the sustainable use of soil is essential. Agronomic management practices, such as foliar spraying of nano‐silicon (nano‐Si) or nano‐selenium (nano‐Se), and soil amendments are very effective in soil contamination control and ensuring agricultural security. In this study, foliar application of nano‐Si (or Se) and soil application of nano‐humus were combined and applied to Cd‐contaminated soil (1.9 mg kg‐1) sown with rice. The application of nano‐humus in soil mainly reduced the proportion of oxidizable Cd and inhibited Cd migration from soil to rice. Cd translocation to the grain in rice was prevented by foliar application of nano‐Si or nano‐Se. Importantly, foliar application of 0.025 mM nano‐Se decreased Cd in rice grain to around 72% of that in the control, leading to a Cd content lower than the Cd standard limit in rice (0.2 mg kg‐1). Background: Panax notoginseng triol saponins (PTS) has been used clinically for ischemic stroke therapy (IST) in China for more than 17 years due to its anti-platelet aggregation and neuro-protective effects, but its mechanism of action is not fully understand. In this study, anti-platelet aggregation-related protein analysis and computer simulations of drug-protein binding interactions were performed to explore the mechanism of the effects of PTS against ischemic stroke in an ischemia reperfusion model. Methods: Three oral doses of PTS were administered in a model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in rats. Panax notoginseng total saponins (PNS) and a combination of PTS and aspirin were chosen for comparison. To evaluate therapeutic effects and explore possible mechanisms of anti-platelet aggregation, we measured cerebral infarct size and water content in brain tissue, histomorphological changes, expression of related factors (such as arachidonic acid metabolites) and platelet receptors in serum, as well as the binding affinity of PTS for platelet adhesion receptors. Results: Compared with PNS, PTS showed a stronger and more potent anti-platelet aggregation effect in MCAO model rats. The combination of PTS and aspirin could reduce adverse gastrointestinal effects by regulating the TXA2/PGI2 ratio. We demonstrated for the first time that PTS was able to regulate Glycoprotein Ib-α (GP1BA) in a model animal. The binding of ginsenoside Rg1 and GP1BA could form a stable structure. Moreover, PTS could reduce von Willebrand factor (VWF)-mediated platelet adhesion to damaged vascular endothelium, and thus enhance the probability of anti-platelet aggregation and anti-thrombosis under pathological conditions. Conclusions: Our results showed that GP1BA was closely related to the anti-platelet aggregation action of PTS, which provided new scientific and molecular evidence for its clinical application. Because of the increase in the nation's need for wind energy, the impacts of climate change on wind energy have been investigated. In addition to long‐term changes, wind energy also shows robust interannual variations, but little effort has been devoted to understanding the underlying mechanisms. In this study, the impact of El Niño on the summer mean wind power density (WPD) over China is investigated. The abilities of five sets of reanalysis data in measuring the interannual variability of the WPD over China are assessed. Encouraging results are seen for all reanalysis datasets, with the MERRA and ERA‐Interim datasets showing the best performance. The relationship between El Niño and the following summer WPD is identified over China. During El Niño decaying year summers, the WPD over south of the Yangtze River valley increases, whereas the WPD over north of the Yangtze River valley decreases. The WPD changes are dominated by an anomalous anticyclone located in the northwestern Pacific. The anticyclone leads to strong southerly winds in southern China and thereby enhances the WPD. In regions north of the Yangtze River valley, the low surface pressure gradient causes a reduction in wind speed and thereby a weak WPD. Because the year‐by‐year variation in El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is highly predictable, our results shed light on the seasonal prediction of wind power over China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hybrid rice has a higher yield potential than inbred rice, but the difference in CH4 emissions between the two groups is still unclear, particularly regarding straw incorporation. In the present study, a pot experiment was conducted to examine the difference in CH4 emissions between inbred (Huanghuazhan) (IR) and hybrid (Rongyouhuazhan) (HR) rice cultivars, both with or without straw incorporation in subtropical China. The results showed that HR produced both greater grain yield and biomass than IR. In contrast, when compared with IR, HR reduced the cumulative CH4 emissions by an average of 18.6%. No significant interactions between rice cultivars and straw management on yield or CH4 emissions were found. HR significantly increased the abundance of methanogens and methanotrophs by 38.9% and 93.4% relative to IR, respectively, thereby reducing CH4 concentrations in the soil pore water. Therefore, we suggest that cultivar rice can produce a higher yield and better mitigate CH4 emissions when compared to inbred rice, regardless of the use of straw incorporation. Weeds and crops that grow together often confront similar types of environmental stress, especially drought stress. Weedy rice (Oryza sativa f. spontanea) and cultivated rice (O. sativa L.) provide a unique pair consisting of a weed and a conspecific model crop that can be used to study the drought tolerance of plants across a large distributional range. The investigation on weedy rice's damage to paddy fields showed that it was more serious in dry direct seeding than water direct seeding. Compared with water direct seeding, the seeds of cultivated rice and weedy rice in dry direct seeding will absorb water and germinate under the condition of insufficient soil moisture. Our hypothesis is that weedy rice seeds have evolved stronger germination ability than coexisting cultivated rice under water stress, so that they can obtain more growth space in the early stage in dry direct seeding and thus obtain higher fitness. Seeds of weedy rice populations and coexisting rice cultivars were collected from 61 sites across China and were germinated with 20% polyethylene glycol‐6000 to simulate drought stress. Two drought response indices, which assessed germination rate and germination index, plus one germination stress tolerance index, indicated significantly greater drought tolerance in weedy rice populations than in coexisting rice cultivars (P < 0.01). Drought tolerance for the three indexes were indica weedy rice > indica rice cultivars, japonica weedy rice > japonica rice cultivars, and indica weedy rice > japonica rice cultivars. These results indicate that weedy rice populations show stronger drought stress tolerance than coexisting rice cultivars at various sites, specifically during the seed germination period. Furthermore, Pearson's correlation found that drought response of weedy rice populations and coexisting rice cultivars were significantly different with these environmental factors: latitude, altitude, annual mean precipitation, mean annual temperature, mean precipitation in the sowing month, mean temperature in the sowing month, and sowing methods. Weedy rice shows different patterns of drought tolerance variation across geographical (latitude and altitude) and environmental (precipitation) gradients compared to coexisting rice cultivars. This study suggests that weedy rice might have evolved new drought tolerance and could provide a useful source of genetic resources for improving drought tolerance of crop cultivars and breeding direct seeded cultivars to reduce the usage of seeds in direct seeding. Rodent populations are known to be reservoirs of viruses with the potential to infect humans. However, a large number of such viruses remain undiscovered. In this study, we investigated the shedding of unknown viruses in long-tailed ground squirrel (Spermophilus undulatus) feces by high-throughput sequencing. A novel and highly divergent virus related to members of the genus Hepacivirus was identified in ground squirrel liver. This virus, tentatively named RHV-GS2015, was found to have a genome organization that is typical of hepaciviruses, including a long open reading frame encoding a polyprotein of 2763 aa. Sequence alignment of RHV-GS2015 with the most closely related hepaciviruses yielded p-distances of the NS3 and NS5B regions of 0.546 and 0.476, respectively, supporting the conclusion that RHV-GS2015 is a member of a new hepacivirus species, which we propose to be named "Hepacivirus P". Phylogenetic analysis of the NS3 and NS5B regions indicated that RHV-GS2015 shares common ancestry with other rodent hepaciviruses (species Hepacivirus E, and species Hepacivirus F), Norway rat hepacivirus 1 (species Hepacivirus G), and Norway rat hepacivirus 2 (species Hepacivirus H). A phylogenetic tree including the seven previously identified rodent hepaciviruses revealed extreme genetic heterogeneity among these viruses. RHV-GS2015 was detected in 7 out of 12 ground squirrel pools and was present in liver, lung, and spleen tissues. Furthermore, livers showed extremely high viral loads of RHV-GS2015, ranging from 2.5 × 106 to 2.0 × 108 copies/g. It is reasonable to assume that this novel virus is hepatotropic, like hepatitis C virus. Importance: Laparoscopic distal gastrectomy is accepted as a more effective approach to conventional open distal gastrectomy for early-stage gastric cancer. However, efficacy for locally advanced gastric cancer remains uncertain.Objective: To compare 3-year disease-free survival for patients with locally advanced gastric cancer after laparoscopic distal gastrectomy or open distal gastrectomy.Design, Setting, and Patients: The study was a noninferiority, open-label, randomized clinical trial at 14 centers in China. A total of 1056 eligible patients with clinical stage T2, T3, or T4a gastric cancer without bulky nodes or distant metastases were enrolled from September 2012 to December 2014. Final follow-up was on December 31, 2017.Interventions: Participants were randomized in a 1:1 ratio after stratification by site, age, cancer stage, and histology to undergo either laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (n = 528) or open distal gastrectomy (n = 528) with D2 lymphadenectomy.Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary end point was 3-year disease-free survival with a noninferiority margin of -10% to compare laparoscopic distal gastrectomy with open distal gastrectomy. Secondary end points of 3-year overall survival and recurrence patterns were tested for superiority.Results: Among 1056 patients, 1039 (98.4%; mean age, 56.2 years; 313 [30.1%] women) had surgery (laparoscopic distal gastrectomy [n=519] vs open distal gastrectomy [n=520]), and 999 (94.6%) completed the study. Three-year disease-free survival rate was 76.5% in the laparoscopic distal gastrectomy group and 77.8% in the open distal gastrectomy group, absolute difference of -1.3% and a 1-sided 97.5% CI of -6.5% to ∞, not crossing the prespecified noninferiority margin. Three-year overall survival rate (laparoscopic distal gastrectomy vs open distal gastrectomy: 83.1% vs 85.2%; adjusted hazard ratio, 1.19; 95% CI, 0.87 to 1.64; P = .28) and cumulative incidence of recurrence over the 3-year period (laparoscopic distal gastrectomy vs open distal gastrectomy: 18.8% vs 16.5%; subhazard ratio, 1.15; 95% CI, 0.86 to 1.54; P = .35) did not significantly differ between laparoscopic distal gastrectomy and open distal gastrectomy groups.Conclusions and Relevance: Among patients with a preoperative clinical stage indicating locally advanced gastric cancer, laparoscopic distal gastrectomy, compared with open distal gastrectomy, did not result in inferior disease-free survival at 3 years.Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT01609309. Abstract Providing, integrating and improving efficient public service in the construction of 'smart cities' in metropolitan areas have been showed to be difficult to achieve. In this article, we propose a strategy for developing service-dominant platforms with the advancement of ICT and more internet enterprises initiatives. We use the concept of SDP (service dominant platform) as a key contributor in a smart city's construction to explain how value can be co-created during the formation and evolution of the platform. Drawing on case materials from a Business-oriented platform named WeChat in Guangzhou and a government-oriented one in Shanghai, an analytic framework on platform and service innovation-relevant theories are built around the dynamic cyclical value co-creation, and three elements are identified in this process defined as value proposition, value in exchange and value in use, which consist of ten sub-elements on different SDPs along four dimensions, namely openness, services innovation, governance and resource. The study makes three contributions. First, it provides new evidence that pursuing smart city construction is not a mere technological architecture but a value co-creation oriented strategy. While facing persistent problems, China's paths exhibit significant and rapidly improving readiness for it. Second, the study provides new insights into, by positively bridging the linkage between platform governance and service innovation and proposing the service dominant platform (SDP) as a clear sustainable strategy. Finally, the study proposes two different resources-based models for guiding smart city initiatives in developing countries. By providing theoretical concepts to support public service innovation, identifying some implications for smart city developed in emerging countries, and suggesting some operational approaches to co-creating value against the local context, this paper has made a meaningful theoretical and practical significance about smart city. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), an economically significant pandemic disease, commonly results in increased impact of bacterial infections, including those by Streptococcus suis (S. suis). In recent years, PRRS virus (PRRSV) NADC30‐like strain has emerged in different regions of China, and coinfected with S. suis and PRRSV has also gradually increased in clinical performance. However, the mechanisms involved in host innate responses towards S. suis and their implications of coinfection with NADC30‐like strain remain unknown. Therefore, the pathogenicity of NADC30‐like strain and S. suis serotype 2 (SS2) coinfection in vivo and in vitro was investigated in this study. The results showed that NADC30‐like increased the invasion and proliferation of SS2 in blood and tissues, resulting in more severe pneumonia, myocarditis, and peritonitisas well as higher mortality rate in pigs. In vitro, NADC30‐like strain increased the invasion and survival of SS2 in porcine alveolar macrophages (PAM) cells, causing more drastic expression of inflammatory cytokines and activation of NF‐ĸB signalling. Background/aim: This study evaluated the usefulness of measuring the atlantodental interval (ADI) and lateral atlantodental spaces (LADSs) by retrospectively analyzing the imaging data of children of various ages with and without atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation (AARS). Materials and methods: The data of 495 children who underwent cranial computed tomography were collected. Among these children, 255 children were clinically diagnosed with AARS while 240 children were not. ADI and LADS values were measured. Results: The difference in mean ADI between children with and without AARS in all age groups was statistically significant (t-test, all P < 0.05). In children without AARS, the 95% reference range for ADI was <3.2 mm. The difference in the variance of bilateral lateral atlantodental spaces (VBLADSs) between children with and without AARS in all age groups was statistically significant (rank-sum test, all P < 0.05), with a 95% reference range of 0–2.20 mm (D-test). Conclusion: The ADI is a well-known and frequently used parameter and is not new, but there is little research about this in China and here we confirm its application in Chinese children. The LADS is not a frequently used parameter, but it does not significantly differ. The VBLADS parameter is new and significant in this manuscript. We concluded that VBLADSs of >2.2 mm are useful indicators for the diagnosis of AARS in patients ≤14 years old. Finally, it can be concluded that ADI of ≥3.2 mm and VBLADS of >2.2 mm are useful indicators for the diagnosis of AARS in patients ≤14 years old. Background: Preterm birth and small for gestational age (SGA) are strong indicators of neonatal adverse outcomes. With the growing importance of preterm SGA infants, we aim to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors for preterm SGA in China.Method: We analyzed the data of parents and infants from a population-based cohort research of the free National Pre-pregnancy Checkups Project (NPCP) in rural China. Only singleton live births that occurred between 24 weeks +0 days and 36 weeks +6 days of pregnancy were included in this study. SGA was defined as birth weight less than the 10th percentile of the reference birth-weight-for-gestational-age population. A multiple logistic regression model was built using the statistically significant variables from the 371 variables in the questionnaire.Results: A total of 11,474 singleton, preterm, live-birth infants were included. Of the total infants, 317 (2.77%) were preterm SGA infants. A higher risk of preterm SGA infants was observed among mothers who were on oral contraceptives (OR: 8.162, 95% CI: 1.622-41.072), mothers who had syphilis (OR: 12.800, 95% CI: 1.250-131.041), and mothers with a high eosinophil percentage (OR: 13.292, 95% CI: 1.282-135.796). Maternal intake of folic acid at least 3 months before pregnancy (OR: 0.284, 95% CI:0.124-0.654) and paternal intake of egg and meat (OR: 0.097,95% CI:0.030-0.315) were protective factors. Compared with North China, the incidence of preterm SGA infants was higher in South China.Conclusion: Preterm SGA infants were associated with both maternal and paternal factors. Background: Motivated by the first mathematical model for schistosomiasis proposed by Macdonald and Barbour's classical schistosomiasis model tracking the dynamics of infected human population and infected snail hosts in a community, in our previous study, we incorporated seasonal fluctuations into Barbour's model, but ignored the effect of bovine reservoir host in the transmission of schistosomiasis. Inspired by the findings from our previous work, the model was further improved by integrating two definitive hosts (human and bovine) and seasonal fluctuations, so as to understand the transmission dynamics of schistosomiasis japonica and evaluate the ongoing control measures in Liaonan village, Xingzi County, Jiangxi Province. Methods: The basic reproductive ratio R0 and its computation formulae were derived by using the operator theory in functional analysis and the monodromy matrix theory. The mathematical methods for global dynamics of periodic systems were used in order to show that R0 serves as a threshold value that determines whether there was disease outbreak or not. The parameter fitting and the ratio calculation were performed with surveillance data obtained from the village of Liaonan using numerical simulation. Sensitivity analysis was carried out in order to understand the impact of R0 on seasonal fluctuations and snail host control. The modified basic reproductive ratios were compared with known results to illustrate the infection risk. Results: The Barbour's two-host model with seasonal fluctuations was proposed. The implicit expression of R0 for the model was given by the spectral radius of next infection operator. The R0s for the model ranged between 1.030 and 1.097 from 2003 to 2010 in the village of Liaonan, Xingzi County, China, with 1.097 recorded as the maximum value in 2005 but declined dramatically afterwards. In addition, we proved that the disease goes into extinction when R0 is less than one and persists when R0 is greater than one. Comparisons of the different improved models were also made. Conclusions: Based on the mechanism and characteristics of schistosomiasis transmission, Barbour's model was improved by considering seasonality. The implicit formula of R0 for the model and its calculation were given. Theoretical results showed that R0 gave a sharp threshold that determines whether the disease dies out or not. Simulations concluded that: (i) ignoring seasonality would overestimate the transmission risk of schistosomiasis, and (ii) mollusiciding is an effective control measure to curtail schistosomiasis transmission in Xingzi County when the removal rate of infected snails is small. Over the past decade, the Chinese government has conducted the joint-stock reform of state-owned commercial banks. The joint-stock reform improves the marketization level of the ownership structure of commercial banks and consequently leads to impacts on the effectiveness of monetary policy. This paper first presents the impacting mechanisms of the joint-stock reform of commercial banks on the effectiveness of monetary policy and then constructs an empirical model to test those impacts. The empirical results show that the increasing degree of joint-stock reform of commercial banks enhances the effectiveness of expansionary monetary policy but weakens the effectiveness of contractionary monetary policy in China. Background: Single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) is an emerging minimally invasive surgery to reduce abdominal incisions. However, despite the increasing clinical application of SILS, no evidence from large-scale, randomized controlled trials is available for assessing the feasibility, short-term safety, oncological safety, and potential benefits of SILS compared with conventional laparoscopic surgery (CLS) for colorectal cancer.Methods/design: This is a single-center, open-label, noninferiority, randomized controlled trial. A total of 198 eligible patients will be randomly assigned to transumbilical single incision plus one port laparoscopic surgery (SILS plus one) group or to a CLS group at a 1:1 ratio. Patients ranging in age from 18 to 80 years with rectosigmoid cancer diagnosed as cT1-4aN0-2 M0 and a tumor size no larger than 5 cm are considered eligible. The primary endpoint is early morbidity, as evaluated by an independent investigator. Secondary outcomes include operative outcomes (operative time, estimated blood loss, and incision length), pathologic outcomes (tumor size, length of proximal and distal resection margins, and number of harvested lymph nodes), postoperative inflammatory and immune responses (white blood cells [WBC], neutrophil percentage [NE %], C-reactive protein [CRP], interleukin-6 [IL-6], and tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α]), postoperative recovery (time to first ambulation, flatus, liquid diet, soft diet, and duration of hospital stay), pain intensity, body image and cosmetic assessment, 3-year disease free survival (DFS), and 5-year overall survival (OS). Follow-up visits are scheduled for 1 and 3 months after surgery, then every 3 months for the first 2 years and every 6 months for the next 3 years.Discussion: This trial will provide valuable clinical evidence for the objective assessment of the feasibility, safety, and potential benefits of SILS plus one compared with CLS for the radical resection of rectosigmoid cancer. According to the features of Chinese personal name, we present an approach for Chinese personal name recognition based on conditional random fields (CRF) and knowledge base in this paper. The method builds multiple features of CRF model by adopting Chinese character as processing unit, selects useful features based on selection algorithm of knowledge base and incremental feature template, and finally implements the automatic recognition of Chinese personal name from Chinese document. The study explores variation in L2 motivation (Ideal L2 self and Ought-to L2 self) of 88 Chinese English university learners in China over a one-year period. It examines change in L2 motivation and the evolving relationship with other measures at three data collection points. No significant changes were found in Ideal L2 self values but Ought-to L2 self values increased significantly between Time 1, 2 and 3. Regression analyses suggest that the significant increase in values of Ought-to L2 self is affected by different motivational factors at various times. We claim that perceptions of the dynamic variation can be obscured in conventional statistical analyses because of the graphical representation of mean values of groups at different times. The use of bubble graphs representing number of participants whose values increase, decrease or remain stable between data collection points, shatters the false impression of stability. Sepsis, a systemic inflammatory response to infection, is the major cause of death in intensive care units (ICUs). The mortality rate of sepsis remains high even though the treatment and understanding of sepsis both continue to improve. Sinomenine (SIN) is a natural alkaloid extracted from Chinese medicinal plant Sinomenium acutum, and its hydrochloride salt (Sinomenine hydrochloride, SIN-HCl) is widely used to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, its role in sepsis remains unclear. In the present study, we investigated the role of SIN-HCl in sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) in BALB/c mice and the corresponding mechanism. SIN-HCl treatment improved the survival of BALB/c mice that were subjected to CLP and reduced multiple organ dysfunction and the release of systemic inflammatory mediators. Autophagy activities were examined using Western blotting. The results showed that CLP-induced autophagy was elevated, and SIN-HCl treatment further strengthened the autophagy activity. Autophagy blocker 3-methyladenine (3-MA) was used to investigate the mechanism of SIN-HCl in vitro. Autophagy activities were determined by examining the autophagosome formation, which was shown as microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 (LC3) puncta with green immunofluorescence. SIN-HCl reduced lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory cytokine release and increased autophagy in peritoneal macrophages (PM). 3-MA significantly decreased autophagosome formation induced by LPS and SIN-HCl. The decrease of inflammatory cytokines caused by SIN-HCl was partially aggravated by 3-MA treatment. Taken together, our results indicated that SIN-HCl could improve survival, reduce organ damage, and attenuate the release of inflammatory cytokines induced by CLP, at least in part through regulating autophagy activities. This paper aims to understand why MNCs choose different embedding strategies in standardization based innovation, and how MNCs׳ competitive landscapes evolve alongside the transition of indigenous innovation in China. Using the multiple case study approach based on the interviews and archival data about China׳s mobile standards, we find that MNCs may choose to proactively or reactively embed in China׳s business and institutional systems by aligning their interests with the standard-based indigenous innovation strategy. Although there are high risks in China׳s standardization, MNCs cannot ignore the huge benefits of China׳s mobile market, and may join in this standardization process when they are ensured the government support would sustain. Abstract: We have reconstructed the spring (March–June) temperature from 1701 to 2008 for the Changling Mountains, the southern edge of the Gobi Desert, using mean earlywood density data of Pinus tabulaeformis. The reconstruction explains 41.7% of the actual temperature variance during the common period 1959–2008. The temperature reconstruction is representative of temperature conditions over a large area of Central and East Asia, especially in the Gobi Desert. Significant spectral peaks are identified at 2.0–2.8 and 26.9years. Our temperature reconstruction successfully captured most recent warming and agreed in general with other temperature reconstructions from nearby regions, eastern China and Northern Hemisphere on a decadal timescale. Our reconstructed temperature is significantly correlated with sea surface temperature in the western tropical and northern Pacific Ocean. Preliminary analysis of links between large-scale climatic variation and the temperature reconstruction shows that there is a relationship between extremes in spring temperature and the Asian summer monsoon circulations. The article discusses a study which aimed to identify environmental factors affecting phytoplankton structure in Daya Bay, South China Sea. It found that temperature and nutrient ratios are the factors driving phytoplankton succession in the bay. The role played by hydrodynamic processes in phytoplankton growth is noted. Also mentioned are diatoms which are the dominant species in the bay, including Chaetoceros affinis, Chaetoceros lorenzianus, and Nitzschia pungens.

Background Higher intakes of cruciferous vegetables or their constituents have been shown to lower inflammation in animal studies. However, evidence for this anti-inflammatory effect of cruciferous vegetable consumption in humans is scarce. Objective/Design In this cross-sectional analysis, we evaluated associations of vegetable intake with a panel of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers among 1,005 middle-aged Chinese women. Dietary intake of foods was assessed by a food frequency questionnaire. Results Multivariable-adjusted circulating concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interlukin-1β (IL-1β), and IL-6 were lower among women with higher intakes of cruciferous vegetables. The differences in concentrations of inflammatory biomarkers between extreme quintiles of cruciferous vegetable intake were 12.66% for TNF-α (Ptrend=0.01), 18.18% for IL-1β (Ptrendd=0.02), and 24.68% for IL-β (Ptrend=0.02). A similar, but less apparent, inverse association was found for intakes of all vegetables combined but not for noncruciferous vegetables. Levels of the urinary oxidative stress markers F2-isoprostanes and their major metabolite, 2,3-dinor-5,6-dihydro-15-F2t-IsoP, were not associated with intakes of cruciferous vegetables or all vegetables combined. Conclusions This study suggests that the previously observed health benefits of cruciferous vegetable consumption may be partly associated with the anti-inflammatory effects of these vegetables. Abstract: This paper categorizes the multiple-faced roles of the government in technology standardization in the catching-up contexts. It presents a case that China has developed a third generation (3G) of mobile system, TD-SCDMA, and deployed it in the Chinese market. The authors attribute the success of this national standardization initiative to that the government is able to balance the interests of different stakeholders of mobile technology and market, and enroll them into the process of TD-SCDMA development and industrialization. The TD-SCDMA case demonstrates that the government in the standardization process can act as a project founder, risk undertaker, interest moderator, collaboration facilitator, and process monitor. Based on the analysis of mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experimental data for core plugs, which were drilled from two Chinese tight sandstone reservoirs, permeability prediction models, such as the classical SDR, Timur-Coates, the Swanson parameter, the Capillary Parachor, the R10 and R35 models, are calibrated to estimating permeabilities from field NMR logs, and the applicabilities of these permeability prediction models are compared. The processing results of several field examples show that the SDR model is unavailable in tight sandstone reservoirs. The Timur-Coates model is effective once the optimal T2cutoff can be acquired to accurately calculate FFI and BVI from field NMR logs. The Swanson parameter model and the Capillary Parachor model are not always available in tight sandstone reservoirs. The R35 based model cannot effectively work in tight sandstone reservoirs, while the R10 based model is optimal in permeability prediction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After entry into the WTO, China's domestic agricultural market is more and more closely integrated into the world market. Recently, a significant price fluctuation of agricultural commodities in the global market has increased concerns over its impact on the economic stability in those developing countries such as China, which has a large import and export of agricultural commodities every year. This paper attempts to study the short-term impact from price fluctuations of the world agricultural commodities upon the China's domestic agricultural market by investigating the dynamic correlation between the price change in the world and Chinese market in the copula framework. Our findings suggest a weak but strengthening short-run impact with an asymmetric nature. At the same time, diversified short-run impacts are observed in four main agricultural commodity markets. Empirical results show that the world price fluctuation has a volatile but decreasing influence on the China's rice market. This volatility of price impact is also observed in the wheat market but it has an escalating trend. The corn market experiences an intensified price shock with a distinct stage characteristic and the soybean market is under the strongest influence from the international price fluctuation. Abstract: September–March mean temperature has been reconstructed to A.D. 1680 for the Kaiduhe River watershed on the southern slope of the Tien Shan Mountains, China, using the Picea schrenkiana tree-ring width. The reconstruction explains the variance of 47% in the observed mean temperature from 1953 to 2011. Power spectral and wavelet analyses demonstrated the existence of significant 50-year and 2- to 7-year cycles of variability. The results of the spatial correlations suggest that our reconstruction contains climatic signals for Central Asia. Warm periods occurred during 1696–1708, 1730–1748, 1784–1804, 1832–1855, 1892–1903, 1924–1928, 1937–1943, and 1987–2006; while the periods of 1685–1695, 1709–1729, 1749–1783, 1805–1831, 1856–1891, 1904–1923, 1929–1936, and 1944–1986 were relatively cold. The significant correlation coefficient between the reconstruction and the temperature reconstruction for the Urumqi River source reveals that the temperature variations in the annual cold period for the southern and the northern slope of the central Tien Shan Mountains are roughly synchronous over the last nearly 300 years. Background: Schistosomiasis japonica, caused by infection with Schistosoma japonicum, is still recognized as a major public health problem in the Peoples' Republic of China. Mathematical modelling of schistosomiasis transmission has been undertaken in order to assess and project the effects of various control strategies for elimination of the disease. Seasonal fluctuations in transmission may have the potential to impact on the population dynamics of schistosomiasis, yet no model of S. japonicum has considered such effects. In this paper, we characterize the transmission dynamics of S. japonicum using a modified version of Barbour's model to account for seasonal variation (SV), and investigate the effectiveness of the control strategy adopted in Liaonan village of Xingzi county, Jiangxi Province. Methods: We use mathematical tools for stability analysis of periodic systems and derive expressions for the basic reproduction ratio of S. japonicum in humans; we parameterise such expressions with surveillance data to investigate the conditions for persistence or elimination of the disease in the study village. We perform numerical simulations and parametric sensitivity analysis to understand local transmission conditions and compare values of the basic reproductive ratio with and without seasonal fluctuations. Results: The explicit formula of the basic reproduction ratio for the SV-modified Barbour's model is derived. Results show that the value of the basic reproduction ratio, R0, of Liaonan village, Xingzi county is located between 1.064 and 1.066 (very close to 1), for schistosomiasis transmission during 2006 to 2010, after intensification of control efforts. Conclusions: Our modified version of the Barbour model to account for seasonal fluctuations in transmission has the potential to provide better estimations of infection risk than previous models. Ignoring seasonality tends to underestimate R0 values albeit only marginally. In the absence of simultaneous R0 estimations for villages not under control interventions (such villages do not currently exist in China), it is difficult to assess whether control strategies have had a substantial impact on levels of transmission, as the parasite population would still be able to maintain itself at an endemic level, highlighting the difficulties faced by elimination efforts. Abstract: July–June precipitation has been reconstructed back to A.D. 1464 for the Baluntai region on the southern slope of the central Tien Shan Mountains, China, using the Picea schrenkiana tree-ring width. The reconstruction explains the variance of 51% in the observed precipitation from 1959 to 2005. By employing a 21-year moving average to the reconstruction, nine periods with above average reconstructed precipitation comprised ∼1474–1503, 1550–1577, 1588–1619, 1658–1713, 1790–1812, 1833–1867, 1890–1907, 1923–1944, and 1988–1995∼; eight periods with below average reconstruction consisted of 1504–1549, 1578–1587, 1620–1657, 1714–1789, 1813–1832, 1868–1889, 1908–1922 and 1945–1987. The wet/dry periods of the reconstructed precipitation correspond well with other reconstructions. Some droughts in the historical documents are also precisely captured in the reconstruction. Precipitation variations for the southern slope of the central Tien Shan Mountains are roughly synchronous with that of the northern slope in the recent ∼300 year. Power spectral and wavelet analysis demonstrated the existence of significant ∼100-y, ∼60-y, ∼50-y, ∼16-y, ∼10-y and ∼2-y cycles of variability. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Drought is a recurring phenomenon in north-central China. Long-term information about the history of drought is still limited because the instrumental records for many areas in north-central China go back only a few decades at best. This paper presents an earlywood width (EWW) chronology of Chinese pine (Pinus tabulaeformis) in the Shimen Mountains, Tianshui, eastern Gansu, north-central China. The climate-response analysis shows that April–July precipitation is the main factor limiting the earlywood growth of Chinese pines in the Shimen Mountains, Tianshui. Based on the EWW chronology, an April–July precipitation reconstruction for the period A.D. 1629–2008 was developed for Tianshui. The climate/tree-growth model accounts for 41.6% of the observed precipitation variance during the period 1953–2008. Spatial analysis shows that the precipitation reconstruction contains a strong common drought signal for north-central China. Reconstructed drought events are compared to a precipitation reconstruction of Huashan and historical archives for north-central China. The results reveal common climatic extremes over much of north-central China. Moreover, some dry periods coincided with solar minima or volcanic eruptions over the past several hundred years. Multi-taper spectral analysis reveals the existence of significant 3.8-year (90%), 3.1-year (95%), 2.7-year (99%), 2.4-year (99%) and 2.0-year (99%) periods of variability. The linkages to the Asian-Pacific Oscillation Index suggest regional precipitation variations may be linked to the East Asian summer monsoon circulations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper aims to identify key policy paradigms and strategic dynamics driving wireless broadband infrastructure (WBI) development in China. It is argued that large emerging countries like China can design their own policy agenda to deal with the diverse interests of different political institutions and business companies under the globalization. It has been found that, facing high uncertainties in future technology trajectories, these countries may follow both mission-orientation and diffusion-orientation paradigms in technology development. Until recently, there have been very few tree-ring studies in southeast China due largely to the scarcity of old trees and the complexity of relationships between tree growth and climate in subtropical regions of China. Recent studies on the conifers in southeast China revealed that tree ring-based climate reconstructions are feasible. Here, we describe a reconstruction (AD 1850-2009) of November-February maximum temperatures for Changting, Fujian, southeast China based on tree ring width data of Pinus massiniana which considerably extends the available climatic information. Calibration and verification statistics for the period 1956-2009 show a high level of skill and account for a significant portion of the observed variance (32.9%) irrespective of which period is used to develop or verify the regression model. Split sample validation supports our use of a reconstruction model based on the full period of reliable observational data (1956-2009). Warm periods occurred during 1854-1859, 1868-1880, 1885-1899, 1906-1914, 1920-1943, 1964-1975 and 1994-present; while the periods of AD 1850-1853, 1860-1867, 1881-1884, 1900-1907, 1915-1919, 1944-1963 and 1976-1993 were relatively cold. The climate correlation analyses with gridded temperature dataset and SST revealed that our season temperature reconstruction contains the strong large-scale climate signals. Our results suggest that some warm winters of Changting are coincident with El Niño events over the past 150 years. In addition, several severely cold winters coincide with major volcanic eruptions.
