The investigation was carried out in the Company Cattle Genetics of Matanzas, which has as problematic the lack of tools that you/they facilitate the registration of environmental indicators, and he/she doesn't have well designed actions that drive to the preservation of the natural resources, especially the floor; all that which limits the achievement of better results. To give solution to the previous problem, you proceeds initially to carry out a bibliographical revision that embraces, among other, fear theoretical related with the environmental administration in Cuba and the world in the mark of the sustainable development; the relationship of the environment with the cattle activity and the importance of the same one keeping in mind the floor like factor of the environment, susceptible of being damaged by actions irresponsible antropogénicas. Later on, based on the studied antecedents, a methodological procedure is elaborated for the design of environmental indicators that you/they allow to the company to improve the mensuration of the environmental acting of its operations, considering the floor like component of interest. Introduction: Diesel oil-based drilling fluids (OBM), while expensive, are highly advantageous for drilling in geological complexities. However, the high hydrocarbon content turns its residues (drilling cuts) into a pollutant with great difficulty for its treatment and final disposal. Objective: To evaluate the drilling waste contaminated with diesel potential for its reuse in cement industry to clinker manufacture as a final disposal alternative. Materials and Methods: In the drilling cuts evaluation as raw material for cement clinker conformation, they were characterized in terms of content of total hydrocarbons, fat and oils, aromatic hydrocarbons, caloric power and flash point. Industrial-type tests were carried out with different mixing ratios between dry cutting and wet cutting with marl and Ferritic soil. Results and Discussion: It was show that with Ferritic soil and dry cutting mixture a lower aromatic fraction content is obtained, which does not affect the clinker quality. Conclusions: Obtained results showed that it is technically feasible, economically sustainable and environmentally friendly; given by cuts contaminated with diesel, generated during oil drilling reuse, and its energy use in cement clinker manufacture. The State Plan for Confronting Climate Change in the Republic of Cuba, Life Task, constitutes the most novel of the current legislation on environmental matters. Recent research reveals the importance of water as sustainability challenges; the integrated management of water resources; and the confrontation with the operational drought, among others. This motivated the author to assess the impact of the Life Task in the investigations carried out by the groups of the Hydraulic Research Center, which she would appreciate, which in general were aimed at confronting climate change, the promotion of a culture aimed at saving water, strengthening the monitoring, surveillance and early warning systems for the systematic evaluation of the different objects of said Plan. LANDSLIDE hazard analysis , *LANDSLIDES , *EARTHQUAKE zones , *INDUCED seismicity , *SOIL liquefaction , *EARTHQUAKE intensity , *FAULT zones - Abstract
The southeastern part of Cuba is considered to be the area of greatest seismic hazard in the country, due to its proximity to the Bartlett-Cayman fault zone, therefore a moderate to high intensity seismic activity can induce geological hazards in this region and impact the environment. The main objective is to propose a methodology that allows to evaluate the susceptibility to landslides and the liquefaction of soils induced by earthquakes for southeast Cuba through the geological characterization, identification of anthropized factors; morphotectonic characterization and seismological evaluation. New maps of landslide susceptibility and liquefaction induced by earthquakes are obtained as results; as well as the direct verification in the terrain of landslides; the main faults that cut the study area are identified; and the morphotectonic blocks and the relative movement between them are established and characterized. This research was carried out on areas of the Agrarian University of Havana, with the objective of determining the power used in traction and gases emitted product of combustion in the plowing labor with the tractor set MTZ-82 and universal moldboard plows of three bodies. To achieve this objective the theoretical and methodological foundations were considered and the necessary measuring instruments were used to determine the reactions of the road on the wheels, the tractor dynamics of traction and the gases emissions produced by the combustion. Starting from the above stated, it was obtained that the biggest road reactions occur on the front wheels of the tractor reaching a value of 6,82 kN, being superior to those of the rear wheels 1,11 kN and wheel field 4,1 kN; the average depth of the work was 16 cm, reaching a mathematical expectation of the speed of 1,34 m/s and a mathematical expectation of the force exerted by the hook of 5,54 kN, being 28,4 L/ha the amount of fuel consumed; hook power reached a value of 7,42 kW, equivalent to 35% of the traction efficiency. In addition, 0, 67 kg of CO, 1,17 kg of CO2 and 0,98 kg of water vapor were ejected to the environment per liter of diesel fuel consumed (C12H26). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Statistical treatment and interpolation procedures applied to historical databases of tropical hurricanes occurring since 1851 within the Atlantic Basin are presented. Indices caracterizing tropical hurricanes threat over Cuba are defined and calculated. They are used to design a Geographic Information System (GIS) project in order to evaluate the threat, which is useful in Territorial, Environmental and Risk Planning studies. It is possible to manage this historical information with these calculated indices by evaluating their spatial behavior. Several interactive maps are introduced: trajectories, probability of affectation, wind average and maximum velocities, trajectories azimuth, month of most frequent occurrence, average hourly duration of affectation and the threat index. Cartographic information used allows representation on a scale of 1:250 000. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NITROGEN in soils , *NITROGEN fertilizers , *POTATO yields , *ALTERNARIA solani , *POTATO diseases & pests , *ERWINIA , *PHYTOPHTHORA infestans - Abstract
In Cuba are applied high amounts of Nitrogen on potato in relation with the average yields obtained. With the aim of define in representative soil-clime conditions the best amounts of Nitrogen for that crop and to prove if the actually recommended amounts decrease the yield because of favouring diseases, three trials were carried out under production conditions in two soils in the province of Villa Clara, Cuba (Typical Red Ferralític soil and Arenic Lixiviated Yellowish Ferralític soil). As control was used the Nitrogen amounts usually applied (220-230 kg ha-1) and lower amounts were tested (160-180-200 kg ha-1 in the first trial; 115-150-185 kg ha-1 in the second and 140-170-200 kg ha-1 in the third one). The Nitrogen was applied at a rate of 80 kg ha-1 as the formula 9 -- 13 -- 17 at plantation and the remainder amount, 30 days later, as formula plus urea. The potato sorts utilized were Chieftain, Romano and Red Scarlet. Each treatment consisted of 4 plots at random with 4 furrows of 340m long. The results showed that the N amounts usually applied under production conditions in Cuba are excessive even for high tuber yields for the country (30t ha-1), so that starting with relatively low amounts, the increasing application of the nutrient decrease the yield; that is associated to an increase of plant diseases such as Phytophthora infestans, Alternaria solani and Erwinia spp. Application of amounts according to the expected yields are recommended; those amounts do not shall surpass 180 kg ha-1 for yields until 30 tha-1. A country development needs an agricultural planning; if it is economically profitable, it should be restricted to the ecological reality of producing areas. In this sense, agroecological zoning is one of the main tools to diminish the risks in agriculture. Keeping in mind these elements, agroecological zoning was carried out in the cordillera de Guaniguanico. Information was recorded in eight meteorological stations and 62 pluviometers from the net of the National Institute of Water Resources to conduct the climatic zoning; 371 000 ha were studied to get data from more than 500 profiles with complete charts, which allowed to characterize soils from the physical, chemical and mineralogical points of view. Different Systems of Geographical Information (SIG) were employed to establish the relationships among several parameters studied to attain the agroecological zoning. Starting from the analysis of information on the performance of crops, the bases for zoning were settled down, considering the temperature and the rain as fundamental climatic elements; both elements were combined to define yield potentials for each condition. The other discriminating element was the soil; firstly, the types of soils and its aptitude for cultivation were kept in mind, later on, its effective depth was considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper the possibilities of application of the method of hedonic prices are examined for the economic valuation of improvements of environmental quality of hotel facilities devoted to tourism in Cuba, with the employment of elements of fuzzy logic for the modeling of relevant information of a subjective character. Existing difficulties in obtaining financing for environmental improvement projects and the objective economic evaluation of investment projects for these purposes are analyzed. When describing the use of the method of hedonic prices for the economic valuation of changes in environmental quality, the possibilities of application of this method are shown, highlighting its relevance in the case of hotel facilities in Cuba. Likewise, as units of information are necessary for the application of the method and as they take on a subjective character, recommendations are introduced regarding their possible modeling with the use of elements of fuzzy logic. INDUSTRIAL wastes , *WASTE management , *MICROBIAL contamination , *SANITARY landfills - Abstract
The City of Havana, main political, administrative and cultural centre of the country, concentrates great part of the economic activities of the nation: industrial, services, scientific nature and tourism. Everything bears it to a high generation of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in connection with other Cuban cities. The non-existence of appropriate and efficient solutions for the final disposition and treatment, as well as the inadequate handling of the same ones, increases the risks and the possible contamination related with this problem. For the development of a system of integral management of the MSW, the main difficulty laid in the real ignorance of the chemical composition of the wastes that are generated in the country and, especially, in The City of Havana, fundamental base for any taking of decision. In this work the results of the characterization of the MSW of Havana City carried out in 2004, are exposed. For the physical-chemical characterization of the MSW the three bigger landfill of this city were selected (Calle 100, Guanabacoa and Ocho Vías), being measured 16 indicators and registering the meteorological conditions. The final results allow affirming that for the first time in the country, there is the necessary information of the physical-chemical composition of the MSW, indispensable for the taking of decisions in the management of these wastes, what constitutes a valuable contribution to the Study for the Director Plan on Integral Management of the MSW in Havana City.
