OBJECTIVE To describe the prevalence of elbow dysplasia (ED) in 13 dog breeds in France. ANIMALS A total of 18,870 elbow radiographs taken from 2002 to 2022 were evaluated by 2 independent examiners. METHODS For each breed, the incidence of each of the 4 International Elbow Working Group scoring classes was extracted from the database. Breeds were excluded if fewer than 150 radiographs had been read for that breed. RESULTS This study included 17,861 records for 13 dog breeds: American Akita, Alaskan Malamute, Old German Shepherd (Altdeutscher Schäferhund), American Staffordshire Terrier, Australian Shepherd, Belgian Shepherd, White Swiss Shepherd, Bernese Mountain Dog, Cane Corso, Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler, and Dogue de Bordeaux. The overall prevalence of ED was 11.4%, ranging from 1.1% in the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog to 32.2% in the Dogue de Bordeaux. The Dogue de Bordeaux, Rottweiler, Bernese Mountain Dog, and Cane Corso breeds were most commonly affected by ED. The prevalence of ED was significantly higher in male dogs than in female dogs (17.5% vs 10.5%, P < .05). Joint incongruity and fragmented coronoid process were the 2 most common primary ED lesions identified. The prevalence of ED among the dogs evaluated decreased over the timeframe of the study. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The results of this study help to clarify the prevalence of ED in different breeds in France. CONTEXT: In women's handball, the large numbers of throws and passes make the shoulder region vulnerable to overuse injuries. Repetitive throwing motions generate imbalance between shoulder internal- and external-rotator muscles. It has not yet been established whether sling-based training can improve shoulder external-rotator muscle strength. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effectiveness of a 6-wk strengthening program in improving shoulder functional profile in elite female high school handball players. DESIGN: Crossover study. SETTING: National elite handball training center. PARTICIPANTS: 25 elite female high school handball players. INTERVENTIONS: The program, completed twice per week for 6 wk, included sling-based strengthening exercises using a suspension trainer for external rotation with scapular retraction and scapular retraction alone. MAIN OUTCOMES: Maximal shoulder external- and internal-rotation strength, shoulder external- and internal-rotation range of motion (ROM), and maximal throwing velocity were assessed preintervention and postintervention for dominant and nondominant sides. RESULTS: After sling training, external- and internal-rotation strength increased significantly for both sides (P ≤ .001, and P = .004, respectively), with the result that there was no significant change in external- and internal-rotation strength ratios for either the dominant or the nondominant shoulder. No significant differences were observed for external-rotation ROM, while internal-rotation ROM decreased moderately, in particular in the dominant shoulder (P = .005). Maximal throwing velocity remained constant for the dominant arm, whereas a significant increase was found for the nondominant arm (P = .017). CONCLUSIONS: This 6-wk strengthening program was effective in improving shoulder external-rotator muscle strength but resulted in a decrease in the ROM in shoulder internal rotation, while throwing velocity remained stable. Canine hip dysplasia (HD) is a complex developmental disease of the coxo-femoral joint and is one of the most common orthopedic conditions in dogs. Due to the genetic contribution, most of the programs fighting against HD recommend selective breeding that excludes affected dogs. Using the best-scoring dogs for breeding may reduce the prevalence of HD. In France, the phenotypic screening of coxo-femoral joint conformation remains a strategy for breeders to establish selection decisions. The HD prevalence was evaluated in 10 breeds, based on the assessment of 27,710 dogs, during the 1997–2017 screening period, which was divided into 3 homogeneous cohorts for analysis. The global HD prevalence varied widely among breeds from 5% (Siberian Husky) to 51.9% (Cane Corso). It decreased over time in 6 breeds, among which 4 (Cane Corso, Gordon Setter, Rottweiler and White Swiss Shepherd) showed a significant decrease. A statistically significant increase in HD prevalence was noted for the Siberian Husky. Although the efficacy of phenotype-based breeding programs remains controversial, our results are in accordance with several recent studies showing that long-term selection policies are valuable, as they may help decreasing the HD prevalence in some breeds. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the upper limb anthropometric dimensions and a history of dominant upper limb injury in tennis players. Dominant and non-dominant wrist, forearm, elbow and arm circumferences, along with a history of dominant upper limb injuries, were assessed in 147 male and female players, assigned to four groups based on location of injury: wrist (n = 9), elbow (n = 25), shoulder (n = 14) and healthy players (n = 99). From anthropometric dimensions, bilateral differences in circumferences and in proportions were calculated. The wrist group presented a significant bilateral difference in arm circumference, and asymmetrical bilateral proportions between wrist and forearm, as well as between elbow and arm, compared to the healthy group (6.6 ± 3.1% vs. 4.9 ± 4.0%, P < 0.01; −3.6 ± 3.0% vs. −0.9 ± 2.9%, P < 0.05; and −2.2 ± 2.2% vs. 0.1 ± 3.4%, P < 0.05, respectively). The elbow group displayed asymmetrical bilateral proportions between forearm and arm compared to the healthy group (−0.4 ± 4.3% vs. 1.5 ± 4.0%, P < 0.01). The shoulder group showed significant bilateral difference in elbow circumference, and asymmetrical bilateral proportions between forearm and elbow when compared to the healthy group (5.8 ± 4.7% vs. 3.1 ± 4.8%, P < 0.05 and −1.7 ± 4.5% vs. 1.4 ± 4.3%, P < 0.01, respectively). These findings suggest that players with a history of injury at the upper limb joint present altered dominant upper limb proportions in comparison with the non-dominant side, and such asymmetrical proportions would appear to be specific to the location of injury. Further studies are needed to confirm the link between location of tennis injury and asymmetry in upper limb proportions using high-tech measurements in symptomatic tennis players. The article presents a comparison of the effectiveness of two tennis training protocols in improving forehand drive performance. Players trained with either handled medicine ball throws, overweighed rackets, or control regular training. After six weeks, increased crosscourt forehand drive velocity was found in the medicine ball and overweighed racket groups, but shot accuracy also declined in the medicine ball group.

We assessed over 15 months the distribution of total coliforms concentrations of Escherichia coli, Enterococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus in three monitoring points in the Etueffont landfill (Belfort, France). We selected the piezometer (PZ30) which is located downstream from the dump and two leachate collectors from the old dump and the new casing. The results showed that the leachate was free from both Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus. The absence of Salmonella was most likely due to the small occupation of the landfill environment by vertebrates, especially rodents, birds and reptiles, which are known to be principal vectors of Salmonella. S. aureu, is generally hosted on skins and mucus of animals. The mean densities of E. coli and Enterococcus in the leachates were low. In contrast, P. aeruginosa abundance was high and closely related to precipitations. Coliform bacteria concentrations in the leachate averaged UFC.100 CFU. ml-1. In the contaminated groundwaters, the coliforms, E. coli and Enterococci were always present at concentrations 10 to 100 fold higher than those reported from septic tank effluents. P. aeruginosa concentrations were low (mean: 11 CFU.100 ml-1) and inferior to those quoted in the leachate. This may be explained by the anoxic conditions which prevailed in the shistous aquifer. The absence of Salmonella in groundwaters may be due to its sensitivity to disinfectants and that of S. aureus linked to the fact that it is not a common host of the human intestine. Finally, our study clearly indicates the role played by E. coli and Enterococci as biomarkers of recent faecal contamination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the highlights of an advisory meeting held by a group of experts in Lyon, France in November 1997, which explored the comparative pathology, biology and natural occurrence of tumors in rodents and in humans, as well as summarizes the evaluations that were made by an October 1998 Working Group that were based on the meeting's findings. Certain aromatic amines have been found to cause bladder carcinoma in humans and to cause cancers in rodents at some sites that do not always include the urinary bladder.

• In 2019, 387 children were treated at home with noninvasive ventilation in France. • Most children had spinal muscular atrophy or congenital myopathy/dystrophy. • Ninety-four percent of children were treated with noninvasive ventilation. • Treatment was initiated electively for 85% of children. • Mean objective noninvasive ventilation use was 8.0 ± 3.1 h/night. The aim of the study was to describe the characteristics of children with neuromuscular diseases treated with long term noninvasive ventilation or continuous positive airway pressure in France. On June 1st 2019, 387 patients (63% boys, mean age 11.2 ± 5.5 years) were treated with long term noninvasive ventilation/continuous positive airway pressure. Thirty three percent of patients had spinal muscular atrophy, 30% congenital myopathy/dystrophy, 20% Duchenne muscular dystrophy, 7% Steinert myotonic dystrophy, and 9% other neuromuscular diseases. Ninety-four percent of patients were treated with long term noninvasive ventilation and 6% with continuous positive airway pressure. Treatment was initiated electively for 85% of patients, mainly on an abnormal overnight gas exchange recording (38% of patients). Noninvasive ventilation/continuous positive airway pressure was initiated during a respiratory exacerbation in 15% of patients. Mean duration of noninvasive ventilation/continuous positive airway pressure was 3.3 ± 3.1 years. Mean objective long term noninvasive ventilation/continuous positive airway pressure use was 8.0 ± 3.1 h/24. Spinal muscular atrophy, congenital myopathy/dystrophy, and Duchenne muscular dystrophy represented 83% of children with neuromuscular diseases treated with long term noninvasive ventilation in France. Purpose: The aim of the study was to analyze the characteristics of otherwise healthy children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA; OSA-I) and children with OSA and non-syndromic obesity (OSA-II) treated with long term continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in 2019 in France., Methods: Data were collected from a national survey on paediatric home noninvasive ventilatory support. CPAP/NIV initiation criteria and duration, age at CPAP/NIV initiation, equipment used and CPAP/NIV settings, and objective compliance were analyzed., Results: Patients with OSA-I and OSA-II represented 6 % (n = 84, 71 % males) and 10 % (n = 144, 72 % males) of the national cohort, respectively. The apnea-hypopnea index (63 % vs 76 %), alone or combined with nocturnal gas exchange (25 % vs 21 %, for OSA-II and OSA-I patients respectively) were used as initiation criteria of CPAP/NIV. OSA-II patients were older at CPAP/NIV initiation (mean age 11.0 ± 4.0 vs 6.8 ± 4.5 years, p < 0.001) and were treated for a longer time (2.3 ± 2.6 vs 1.3 ± 1.5 years, p = 0.008) than OSA-I patients. NIV was used in 6 % of OSA-I patients and 13 % of OSA-II patients (p = 0.142). Both groups used preferentially a nasal mask. Mean CPAP level was higher in OSA-II patients as compared to OSA-I patients (8.7 ± 2.0 vs 7.7 ± 2.4 cmH 2 O, p = 0.02). Objective compliance was comparable (mean use 6.8 ± 2.6 vs 5.9 ± 3.0 h/night in OSA-I and OSA-II, respectively, p = 0.054)., Conclusion: Six and 10 % of children treated with long term CPAP/NIV in France in 2019 had OSA-I and OSA-II, respectively. Objective: To describe the characteristics of children treated with long term continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in France., Design: Cross-sectional national survey., Setting: Paediatric CPAP/NIV teams of 28 tertiary university hospitals in France., Patients: Children aged <20 years treated with CPAP/NIV since at least 3 months on June 1st, 2019., Intervention: An anonymous questionnaire was filled in for every patient., Results: The data of 1447 patients (60% boys), mean age 9.8 ± 5.8 years were analysed. The most frequent underlying disorders were: upper airway obstruction (46%), neuromuscular disease (28%), disorder of the central nervous system (13%), cardiorespiratory disorder (7%), and congenital bone disease (4%). Forty-five percent of the patients were treated with CPAP and 55% with NIV. Treatment was initiated electively for 92% of children, while 8% started during an acute illness. A poly(somno)graphy (P(S)G) was performed prior to treatment initiation in 26%, 36% had a P(S)G with transcutaneous carbon dioxide monitoring (PtcCO 2 ), while 23% had only a pulse oximetry (SpO 2 ) with PtcCO 2 recording. The decision of CPAP/NIV initiation during an elective setting was based on the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) in 41% of patients, SpO 2 and PtcCO 2 in 25% of patients, and AHI with PtcCO 2 in 25% of patients. Objective adherence was excellent with a mean use of 7.6 ± 3.2 h/night.
