TREES ,RACISM ,JENA High School (Jena, La.) - Abstract
The article focuses on the controversy over a tree which became a symbol for racial bias in Jena High School in Louisiana. Issues were raised when three nooses appeared on the tree after a black student sat under it where only white students used to sit. The incident dismissed as a prank sparked fights between black and white students. On September 20, 2007, about 20,000 people demonstrated in Jena against the unfair treatment of black students who came to be known as the Jena Six. It says that school officials have cut down the controversial tree.
