Introduction: Educators require focused training to foster the development of intercultural competence in nurses. Training programs for educators need to be based on a comprehensive profile with a focus on intercultural learning. This study aims to define and validate a profile of the Intercultural Nursing Educator (INE). Method: The Delphi method was used with an iterative, multi-stage process to transform opinions into group consensus. A total of 46 European, African, and American experts from the nursing and intercultural field participated. Inclusion criteria required English at a level of B2, expertise in the field of intercultural competence, experience in teaching intercultural competence in the nursing context, and publications focused on intercultural topics. Results: The INE profile was developed and all 126 competencies were validated. Discussion and conclusion: The profile is freely available on the project website and provides the basis for curricula, training programs and assessment of the required competences. Participants found the course was highly beneficial, enhanced independent and critical thinking, and instilled them with the confidence and skills to deliver such courses to Indian researchers, nurses and other healthcare professionals. Conclusion: Contextualising materials and methods to participants' experiences made learning more relatable. The use of adult learning approaches enabled participants to apply the same approaches when leading training in their own institutions and underpinned long-term sustainable working relationships between facilitators and learners, leading to new studies and new resources to support evidence-informed decision-making. Implications for practice: An educational intervention on 'indigenising systematic reviews' with online collaborative learning can produce improvements in the knowledge and skills of participants. Advantages of this educational approach include its flexibility, active involvement of participants and sustainable partnership building. Internationalisation of the curriculum (IoC) is a focus for higher education institutions. IoC aims to equip students with essential enhanced skills in relation to becoming global citizens and ensuring that their practice is culturally competent. Undergraduate courses must furnish children's nursing students with learning opportunities that meet the outcomes of the 2018 Nursing and Midwifery Council standards of proficiency. The standards require that nursing education, supervision and training should provide students with the learning opportunities needed to achieve the desired proficiencies and programme outcomes. This article analyses and evaluates the implementation of an online international learning (OIL) project in an undergraduate children's nursing programme in the UK. The pilot project has been identified as a useful and successful teaching method for promoting intercultural awareness among students and provides guidance for future OIL design. Purpose: To measure the perceptions of caring between Slovene and Russian members of nursing teams and compare the results with earlier findings in other European Union countries. Method: A cross-sectional study that included nurses and nursing assistants in Slovenia (n = 294) and Russia (n = 531). Data were collected using the 25-item Caring Dimensions Inventory. Results: The most endorsed item for Slovene and Russian members of nursing teams was an item related to medication administration. All items that were endorsed by Russian participants were also endorsed by Slovenian participants; however, they ascribed a different level of importance to individual aspects of caring. Discussion: Compared with other European Union countries, such as the United Kingdom and Spain, Slovenian and Russian members of nursing teams endorsed more technical aspects of nursing duties as caring, suggesting cultural differences and previous influences of the biomedical model on nursing education and practice. Aim The aim of this study was to explore bilingual nurses' perspective about providing language concordant care to patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) and its impact on patients and nurses. Factors affecting the provision of language concordant care to patients LEP were also explored. Background With an increase in migration and mobility of people across the world, the likelihood of experiencing language barriers while providing and receiving care is high. Nurses are responsible for providing care to patients regardless of their culture, religion, ethnic background or language. Language barriers, however, are hurdles that hamper development of effective communication between nurses and patients. Eliminating language barriers is a crucial step in providing culturally competent and patient-centred care. Design Qualitative descriptive study. Methods During January-August 2015, 59 nurses, working in acute hospitals in the UK, participated in 26 individual in-depth interviews and three focus group discussions. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. Findings Four themes: 'when we speak the same language'; 'when I speak my patient's language'; 'what facilitates provision of language concordant care' and 'what hinders the provision of language concordant care' were identified. Factors affecting nurses' ability to provide language concordant care included individual factors (confidence; years of experience as a nurse; years of experience in the work setting; and relationship with colleagues), patients' expectation, attitudes of other patients, colleagues and nurse managers, organizational culture and organizational policies. Conclusion Bilingual nurses can play a very important role in the provision of language concordant for patients with LEP. Further research is needed to explore patient perspective. Aims A discussion of recently discovered literature that reveals how after the Crimean War ended in 1856, Jamaican nurse, doctress and entrepreneur Mary Seacole travelled more widely and gained further international recognition than had previously been appreciated. Background New findings demonstrate that Seacole's international charitable and business activities were reported more widely than realised. Recently discovered literature uncovers her networking and strategic skills in various social milieus. A former Scutari nurse and 39 other women, offered their service to Seacole to nurse British soldiers in India. Newspapers also reported the medal she had been awarded from the Turkish government. Design Discussion paper. Data sources Digitized 19th-century newspaper reports, and 1857 Dutch and 1858 French translations of Seacole's autobiography and a recently discovered handwritten letter dated 1 October 1857 from Seacole to Sir Henry Storks, at the time Secretary for Military Correspondence at the War Office, London. Implications for nursing Awareness of the findings affords a more thorough understanding of the scope and diversity of nursing history. This can provide valuable role models for the 21st century generations of competent and self-confident healthcare professionals. The new evidence offers further testimony that Seacole can truly be considered as one such figurehead. Since the purchase of the Riotinto mines by the Rio Tint Rio Company Limited in 1873, the region actually became a British colony until 1954. The creation of a hospital to attend the English people was an example of its organization, although as time went by its staff would be Spanish. Some of the main targets of this study are to identify the British and the Spanish nurses who worked at the hospital, as well as to find out the kind of nursery craft and its influence on the Spanish professionals who worked there. By the moment we have identified not less than 36 British nurses (1873- 1954), 13 male nurses and 11 Spanish female nurses (1954-1983). It seems that the Spanish nursery was not really in contact with its British precedent in the hospital, mucho more advanced as for organization and competence, but not for that its professional prestige was lower. Background: theoretical guidance and policy directives emphasize the necessity of considering the culturally-specific needs of health and social care service users as part of 'person-centred' approaches to care. This article outlines the ideas underpinning an ongoing PhD study of the interactions between care staff and residents which is aimed at gaining insights into how person-centred care is fulfilled for people with dementia in Scottish care homes. Discussion: certain dynamics may constrain the deployment of culturally-meaningful care approaches for certain service users in Scottish care homes. These include limited understandings of the nature of cultural diversity in modern Scotland, failure to recognize the import of 'inter-generational' cultural change, lack of research around the interactions between staff and service users from different cultural backgrounds, and a sketchy demographic picture of the ethnic/cultural composition of Scottish care home populations. Groups of service users in particular settings (such as older people with dementia in long-term care) may be especially vulnerable to the effects of care processes constituted under such circumstances. Conclusion: poorly recognized gaps in understanding of the sociocultural and historical influences which help constitute 'the person' in many Scottish care home residents may exist. The aim of this study was to describe the stressors experienced by Japanese mothers living in the United Kingdom. An ethnomethodological design was used by means of an open-ended, in-depth interview. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 10 Japanese mothers living in the United Kingdom. Analysis was performed using the KJ (Kawakito Jiro) method, equivalent to content analysis and data reduction. The main stressors were participation in the small hierarchical society of the Japanese business climate, isolation, language and cultural barriers, and raising Japanese children in a British cultural context. Unsatisfactory experiences of childbirth, child rearing, and contacts with medical services were reported. Recognizing cultural differences and the difficulties that may be experienced by Japanese clients is a first step. Resources may be provided to help these clients widen their social contacts and improve communication with providers of health care and education for their children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

(2004) Journal of Advanced Nursing 46(2), 144–151 International educational partnership for practice: Brazil and the United Kingdom To enhance healthcare globally, successful academic partnerships between institutes of higher education are crucial to strengthen collaboration between countries and identify new ways of working. The desire to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity among childbearing women in north-east Brazil urged professional nurses to seek new ways of working through such a partnership. Reflections on the success of the link identify the key qualities uniting the partnership. This paper explores the key qualities of a higher education partnership between the United Kingdom and north-east Brazil. These qualities can act as a guide to other faculties engaged in such links to facilitate successful collaborative working for gains on both sides. Critical reflections from both partners revealed that the key qualities identified are effective communication, deep commitment and the need for both partners to understand each other's context of care. Examination of each of these qualities illustrates that the shared perspectives, mutual respect and enriched educational experience are valuable and essential to successful partnership working. This critical reflection illustrates the process of success and how others can benefit from the lessons learned, whatever the nature of partnership. Understanding the nature of collaborative working has strengthened each education and practice community, encouraged them to take risks, and remain committed to collective success. Working in a hospital situated in a city of Great Britain, where over one-third of the population can be classified as Asian, day-to-day practice often leads the author to reflect on the care provided to this client group. The author have spent some time talking to colleagues about their feelings regarding caring for Asian patients. The main reaction appears to be that, they feel that the standard of care provided for Asian patients is not as high as they would like. There appears to be a feeling that Asian patients suffer because of communication difficulties and a tack of nursing knowledge about their supposedly different needs. The Asian population itself is a diverse group, thus the information which classifies people according to religion is likely to be limiting and generalized. Transcultural nursing theory tends to be American and thus not necessarily applicable to British nurses.
