The article discusses the issue if periodontal disease is preventable in Great Britain. The requirement for the prevention of a disease is the knowledge of its aetiology. The nonspecific plaque theory asserts the primary role of oral bacteria and state that gingival inflammation is produced by accumulations of bacterial plaque in proximity to the gingival margin. A summary of the body of evidence is also emphasized in the article.
