The author relates their involvement in the process of testing a picture storybook to teach science concepts. The project asked: If children were learning through a story where the science content was explicit, would children be able to explain the science in the context of the story and then in real-world contexts? Would the learning become embedded? In this article, the author helps to develop a picture storybook to teach science concepts and compares it with a non-fiction text. To compare learning from the picture book with non-fiction texts, the author compared the effect of reading a non-fiction text with reading the story.

In this paper, we explore our use of a dialogical storytelling approach to alleviate some of the tensions involved in researching another person's embodied experience. These tensions concern the problems of (a) how to "access" another's embodied experience and (b) how to "represent" that experience. We consider these issues through sharing creative nonfiction stories, alongside theoretical reflections, drawn from our research into the meaning and value of an adapted sport and inclusive adventurous training course for military personnel who have experienced serious injury and/or trauma. In terms of accessing another's embodied experience, we observe how co-experienced physical movement seemed to allow taboo tales to be shared. In moments like these, there is a sense of "doing together" that supports story sharing--embodied interaction is the medium that allows it to happen. We suggest that evocative stories of personal embodied experience are unlikely to be shared or witnessed "without" an immersive embodied interaction. In terms of representation, we propose that faithful portrayals of embodied experience are most likely to be achieved through particular writing strategies. Because another's embodied experience can only be glimpsed tangentially, through a physical-emotional sensibility, it needs to be evoked, implied or rendered through aesthetic forms. We have found storytelling to be one way of writing that allows us to express and communicate complex and sometimes ambiguous forms of embodied knowledge, understanding and wisdom that we may not yet have fully grasped ourselves.

The Royal Society Young People's Book Prize is awarded annually in the United Kingdom for the best science information book, and the winning book is chosen by panels of young people. This article discusses the findings of a study of the responses to the books and to their judging experience of young people who participated on panels in the 2011 Royal Society Young People's Book Prize. Interviews were conducted with 46 young people, aged from 8 to 14 years, from across the United Kingdom. The nature of contemporary non-fiction books is discussed, specifically science information books. The impact of their design and format on reading is explored, as is the social nature of reading, which was a consequence of the judging panel context. The young people had opinions on the age range for which each book was most suitable, but they generally did so in such a way as to include themselves. It was found that their judging responsibilities contributed to these young people displaying a positive reading identity and sense of self-efficacy.

Are the books preferred and most enjoyed by children harder than other books they read? Are non-fiction books read and understood at the same level of difficulty as fiction books? The Accelerated Reader software offers computerized comprehension quizzes of real books individually chosen by children, giving children (and teachers, librarians, and parents) feedback on performance. Children can also express preferences for books they enjoy. Quizzes taken by 150,220 children in 967 schools are reported. Considering highly preferred books, children were reading very difficult books with a high degree of success. Non-fiction books were not read or understood as carefully as fiction books. Implications for future research and practice are outlined.

The present research examined the role of personality factors and paratextual information about the reliability of a story on its persuasiveness. Study 1 (N = 135) was focused on recipients' explicit expectations about the trustworthiness/usefulness and the immersiveness/entertainment value of stories introduced as nonfiction, fiction, or fake. Study 2 (experimental, N = 186) demonstrated that a story was persuasive in all three paratext conditions (nonfiction, fiction, or fake versus belief-unrelated control story) and that its influence increased with the recipients' need for affect. Participants' need for cognition increased the difference in persuasiveness of a nonfictional versus a fake story. Additional mediation analyses suggest that fiction is more persuasive than fake because readers of fiction get more deeply transported into the story world. A systematic review was undertaken in 2006 to answer the question "What is the evidence for successful practice in teaching and learning with regard to non-fiction writing (specifically argumentational writing) for 7- to 14-year-olds?", using EPPI-Centre methodology. Results showed that certain conditions have to be in place. These include: a writing process model in which students are encouraged to plan, draft, edit and revise their writing; some degree of cognitive reasoning training in addition to natural cognitive development; peer collaboration, thus modelling a dialogue that will become internal and constitute "thought"; and explicit explanations of the learning processes. Specific strategies include: "heuristics"; planning; oral argument, counterargument and rebuttal to inform written argument; explicit goals (including audiences) for writing; teacher modelling of argumentational writing; and "procedural facilitation". This article confirms the results of the 2006 study in the light of recent research. Implications for policy, practice and further research are considered. (Contains 1 table.)

Examines problems associated with children's use of science text, the implied literacy demands of learning science from currently available science books and schemes, and the extent to which the current interpretation of literacy advocated by the National Literacy Strategy encompasses the skills needed to learn science from a book. Frequency-of-circulation distributions from 16 United Kingdom libraries participating in initial period of operation of the Public Lending Right are discussed. Differences between the libraries are highlighted, and, for each, the adequacy of various refinements of the simplest model (geometric distribution, negative binomial distribution, or mixed negative binomial distribution) is considered. The book "Early Language Policy in the 21st Century. An International Perspective" by Zein, Subhan, and Coady, Maria R. deals with the framework conditions for foreign language teaching in primary education. A total of 14 chapters are dedicated to foreign language teaching in English, Spanish, Arabic, and Chinese on all continents. The focus is on the situation of German language teaching in Great Britain, which is described as sobering. German ranks third among foreign language learners there, while Chinese as a foreign language is gaining momentum. The book "Dansk Bibliotekshistorie" by Nan Dahlkild and Steen Bille Larsen is a comprehensive representation of Danish library history from the Middle Ages to the present. It compares the development of libraries in Denmark with other countries such as France and Great Britain and emphasizes the importance of opening libraries to everyone. The book also covers libraries in other areas that were once part of the Danish realm and is aimed at anyone interested in the social, cultural, and political backgrounds of libraries. This article contributes to the limited body of work attending to girlhood in children's nonfiction, with specific focus on collective biographies about women published since 2016. In recent years, children's nonfiction books about women have proliferated rapidly in the United Kingdom and beyond. This proliferation has coincided with an intensification of academic and public interest in young people's engagement with feminist ideas, where female empowerment is often marketed as a commodity. The biographies often present narratives of "empowered" women, and the implication of their framing is that readers will consume the texts and be inspired to achieve empowerment as well. Such discourses of empowerment are conducive to neoliberal subjectivities, where the self is regarded as autonomous, self-reliant, and responsible. This article offers a critical content analysis of Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo's Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Tales of Extraordinary Women (2016), Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls 2 (2017), and three of Kate Pankhurst's Fantastically Great Women books (2016--2020). My analysis is framed by poststructuralist feminist theories and popular feminism as theorised by Sarah Banet-Weiser. I suggest that, despite the important and admirable intentions underlying their publication, the overarching discourses of girlhood that these texts present are problematic. Specifically, whilst female representation is important, there are undertones that render women and girls individually responsible for themselves, especially for their aspirations and successes. As readers are inspired to take responsibility for their lives, other factors that produce and maintain their unequal status in the first place are eschewed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
