A mixed methods approach for gathering data was adopted to report Level 5, 2nd (N = 34; F27, M7) and Level 6, 3rd (N = 29; M5, F24) year University students’ (N = 63) reflections of dance practice at Leeds Beckett University in the north of England. Five research instruments were utilised to gather data: questionnaires (including both open and closed questions), semi-structured interviews, reflective logs, pictorial evidence and observations. Reflections from practising primary (N = 9; F7, M2) and secondary (N = 8; M1, F7) teachers and their young people (N = 904, 5 to 18-year olds) also informed the students’ practice. The students’ production of original dance teaching resources (N = 17) delivered at the University based professional development days, attended by delegates (N = 121) from across the UK, served to qualify the suitability of the teaching and resources. The collaboratively created resources are highlighted as beneficial to enhance learning, teaching, self-efficacy, resilience and employability. In this reflective piece, representatives of the agencies that funded and managed the Early Learning Systems Research program – the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the World Bank – take stock of recent global developments in research, policy, and financing by donors for early childhood education (ECE). A rapid increase in research on early childhood interventions has secured a consensus that in vesting in early matters for later outcomes in life. In recent years, development finance institutions have taken unprecedented steps to incorporate ECE into their policies and approaches, have helped build research capacity, and fostered communities of practice on ECE. Despite these developments, however, the share of official development assistance (ODA) for ECE remains extremely low. Limited prioritization of ECE by donors may be reinforced by a persistence of low demand for ECE financing from governments and differences in delivery mechanisms between ECE and other levels of education. The concepts of ‘graduateness’ and graduate attributes became contested terrain before COVID-19 destabilised even the most assured of shared learning constructions. Indeed, for those of us immersed in the delivery of work-based learning (WBL), this has long been the case. Promotion of reductive notions of ‘skills’ acquisition to comply neatly with an employability agenda holds little relevance for those students already engaged in full time careers, and with a wealth of professional experience. What can hold influence and interest, however, is the opportunity to engage in meaningful, agentic, professionally-aligned reflective practices as a scaffolded route to promoting self-awareness and developing confidence in mapping competences from the professional domain to the academic (and vice versa). This paper shares an account of taking an embedded approach to supporting the development of academic literacies amongst work-based learners in one UK HEI. In particular, it will consider the use of reflective pedagogical tools and values in supporting work-based learners to become confident and adaptable writers. Discussion considers how work-based pedagogies and approaches may have farreaching relevance in a post-pandemic landscape, where reskilling and professional agility are likely to become more prolific aspects of education and work. Writing itself is framed as an integrated communication practice that encompasses literature retrieval, reading, evaluation, synthesis and articulation of argument. The paper will describe pre-pandemic academic support activities and share qualitative survey data in which students consider their confidence as both professional and academic writers. International research and development projects (or grand challenge projects) consist of multicultural, multi-country, multi-sectoral, and multi-stakeholder initiatives aimed at poverty reduction. They are usually conceived as partnerships between actors in the global north–south. The COVID-19 pandemic was a major unexpected disruption to ongoing projects and challenged their already complex management. The aim of this paper is to present evidence on how international development projects were impacted by COVID-19 with a particular focus on the relationship between research institutions in the north and south. We conducted a mixed-methods research study, combining a reflective exercise with the co-author team and a survey with principal investigators, project managers, and capacity development leads drawn from 31 Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) projects funded through the UK government's Official Development Assistance (ODA) and focused on social–ecological system research. The survey contained closed- and open-ended questions in order to (i) demonstrate how those involved in managing projects adapted to risks, including both threats and opportunities, presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, and (ii) consider the implications for tailoring adaptive management approaches in international research projects amidst uncertainties, with a special focus on enhancing equities in global north–south partnerships. The paper offers the following recommendations on designing, planning, and implementing international research and development projects: (i) devolve project management in order to enhance project resilience and improve north–south equities; (ii) allocate dedicated resources to enable equitable north–south research partnerships; (iii) rely more on hybrid and agile approaches for managing a project's life cycle; and (iv) improve resource flexibility, transparency, and communication through enhanced funder–implementer collaboration. Background: International medical electives (IMEs) provide opportunities for global health education within undergraduate medical curricula; however, ethical and practical preparations vary. Methods: Single-centre, prospective, mixed-methods study, utilising online questionnaires with students and host supervisors, contemporaneous reflective diaries and focus groups, to explore the preparedness and experiences of final-year UK medical students undertaking IMEs. Results: Students experienced communication challenges and felt underprepared prior to IME. Students undervalued cultural preparation, whereas host supervisors primarily desired humility and cultural sensitivity. Visitors to high-income countries underpredicted cultural differences with reflective practice supporting understanding of global health inequalities. Burden on hosts and ethical dilemmas related to acting beyond competence remained significant concerns. Conclusion: International medical electives provide experiential learning, and with authentic reflection facilitate professional development. Enhanced culturally competent preparation and debriefing is however essential for collaborative and responsible student learning. Summary: Reflective learning is a fundamental part of human learning and development and has attracted attention from management scholars as well as practitioners. In this study, we build on trait activation theory and investigate how proactive personality and team task support jointly influence employee reflective learning. Using a questionnaire survey, we collected data at two time points from 154 participants nested in 37 teams in five organizations in the United Kingdom. The results from multilevel analyses showed that proactive personality had a positive effect on reflective learning up to a certain point. Over and above this inflection point, this positive effect ceased to further increase. In addition, the nonlinear effect of proactive personality on reflective learning was much stronger when team task support was weak than when it was strong. The finding regarding the nonlinear relationship extends our understanding of the effect of proactive personality. The cross‐level moderating effect of team task support suggests a complementary perspective to appreciate the interactions between proactive personality and its relevant situational characteristics. Practitioners can use these findings to design effective intervention plans and facilitate employee reflective learning in specific settings and in workplace learning in general. Introduction: In 2018, the General Dental Council introduced reflective practice as part of an Enhanced Continuing Professional Development (ECPD) system, mandatory for registrants in the United Kingdom. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate dental professionals' perceptions and practice of reflection and to explore the benefits of an evidence-informed reflective practice learning course. Material and methods: This study was conducted at two dental schools in the United Kingdom (UK). A short course on reflective practice which included pre-and post-course surveys, using closed-and open-ended questions, was afforded to dental professionals attending Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses. Quantitative data were analysed using SPSS version 25.0 software, and responses to open-ended questions were explored by content analysis. Results: Fifty-two dentists attending the short course provided responses; the majority were female (73%, n = 38) and internationally qualified (60%, n = 31). The pre-course questionnaire revealed that the majority of participants (94%; n = 49) considered reflection as part of their professional practice, with 55% (n = 29) reporting doing so daily. Most (88%; n = 46) had received no formal training. The post-course questionnaire revealed that 88% (n = 46) found the course useful as it gave a "systematic and schematic" approach enhancing the participants' understanding of reflective practice. Conclusion: The findings suggest that a theoretically informed short course on reflective practice was welcomed by participants who showed a strong interest in learning how to reflect supported by mentors. The educational value of portfolios as assessments has been widely acknowledged across the higher education sector and literature as providing a platform to promote student-centred and reflective learning (Brown, 1997; Snadden & Thomas, 1998; Karlowicz, 2000). While there is plentiful research investigating the benefits of providing portfolios at undergraduate level, little has focused on the role of assessment from a students' perspective. This study sought to examine how students from an Academic English course at a UK university perceive assessments in comparison to the intention of the assessment, as designed for the course. A correlation can be seen between the questionnaire results measuring students' perceptions and scores on the assessments. Students who, as intended by the course creator, "related the portfolio tasks to the essay" and "consciously thought about the link between the two assessments" received a higher grade in both assessments; whereas, those who disagreed with these statements, unaligned to the course aims, generally received lower grades in both their portfolio and essay. These results suggest that the intentions of an assessment should be made explicitly clear to the cohort, developing their understanding and thus potentially the importance they assign to the task and the benefits and skills they gain. This letter summarises the perspectives of medical students in the United Kingdom (UK) on the research paper conducted by Wang and colleagues (2023) titled 'Achievement Emotions of Medical Students: Do They Predict Self-Regulated Learning and Burnout in an Online Learning Environment?'. Overall, we find this paper a positive contribution to the literature surrounding medical education. However, we have highlighted some weaknesses in the study design and proposed additional points for exploration in further iterations of this study. In this article the researchers explore the notion of emotional capital in relation to language teachers' emotion labor and the role of reflection in understanding their emotional experiences. They draw on interview narratives with teachers (N = 25) working in higher education institutions in the United States and United Kingdom. During these interview conversations, the researchers elicited accounts of teachers' emotionally charged experiences that arise as part of their ongoing, mundane teaching practice and how they respond to these situations. The researchers argue that as language teachers struggle to orient to the feeling rules of their institutions, they develop the capacity to perform the emotions that they believe are expected of them. This capacity is further shaped through their reflective practice, as both individual reflection and collaborative reflection with colleagues. The researchers thus analyze how language teachers' accruing emotional capital, developed through emotion labor and reflective activity, can be converted into social and cultural capital. Background: The Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) has been proposed as a useful framework to investigate professional behaviour, however, was not yet applied to the evaluation of an educational intervention. This study will address this gap by utilising the TPB to evaluate the effectiveness of an education programme delivered by the professional regulator for UK doctors in enhancing three professional behaviours: raising concerns, engaging in reflective practice, and use of regulator confidentiality guidance. Methods: This is a comprehensive mixed methods study combining qualitative (interviews) and quantitative (quasi-experiment) data. Intervention participants were asked to complete a survey measuring the variables in the TPB (attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and intention) for the three professional behaviours before, immediately post, and 3-months later following the education programme. Ninety-four doctors completed the survey pre/post intervention and 38 at all three times. One hundred and eleven doctors from the same hospital trust who did not take part in the intervention completed the survey at two time points and formed the control group. Forty-two interviews were conducted with intervention participants. Results: The quantitative study revealed that the educational intervention significantly improved attitudes (raising concerns, using confidentiality guidance), subjective norms (raising concerns, reflective practice, using confidentiality guidance), perceived control (raising concerns, using confidentiality guidance), and intentions (using confidentiality guidance) (Group and Time interaction; Fs ≥ 3.996, ps ≤.047, ηp2 ≥.020). Non-UK graduate doctors' subjective norms towards raising concerns and confidentiality guidance increased significantly after the intervention (Fs ≤ 6.602, ps ≥.011, ηp2 =.032 F = 6.602, p =.011, ηp2 =.032), but not UK graduates (p >.05). Interviews revealed that doctors had positive views about professional behaviours but also mentioned numerous barriers to actually engage in more complex, context dependent behaviours. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that an educational intervention was successful in improving the TPB variables of three professional behaviours. It also revealed that teaching professionalism does not happen in isolation and, therefore, personal and contextual factors are crucial to consider. Drawing on elements of self-determined learning or heutagogy, the graduate employability impact of the UK's leading Universities Business Challenge (UBC) competition is investigated over a five year period of from 2012–17. A central research question was addressed, namely: what do inter-university business simulations, such as the UBC, contribute to developing self-determined learner skills and graduate employability? A mixed-methods research approach combined structured equation modelling (SEM) results of 2 student surveys from over 50 (UK) universities, with qualitative analysis of 7 student focus-groups and 15 semi-structured interviews. The article contributes to new knowledge about the role of UBC as an example of an inter-university business simulation. It models the direct and indirect effects of personal/managerial skills development and reflective learning capacity (as mediator) on perceived employability impact. A group study program in the UK provides the setting for understanding deep learning in social work education through inquiry-based learning (IBL). Thirteen undergraduate and graduate students from a large university in Western Canada participated in a 15-day learning journey complete with a research methods conference and multiple exchanges with academics, service providers, and service users during their experiential inquiry. Two student coauthors and a faculty member discuss this unique active learning experience in this reflective essay using a constructivist lens to illustrate and make connections between IBL, student engagement, critical thinking, and deep learning. Students' deep-learning experiences are shared in relation to Sawyer's (2006) six deep-learning activities, adding to our knowledge about how IBL can support student learning preferences. This article explores reflection and reflective thinking, drawing upon qualitative research on international students' perceptions of developing their employability while studying in the UK. It addresses a gap in the literature by making a connection between internationalization and employability, concepts that are mainly framed as separate discursive realms. The literature on internationalization is focused around international student recruitment and the benefits to the host institution; the employability discourse is oriented towards national policies on the development of human capital through home students in the domestic market. The reflective thinking demonstrated by the international students illustrates the challenges they faced in seeking opportunities to enhance their employability within and outside the university; and to (re)assess learning opportunities that are integrated with work experience. The findings suggest that there is scope for embedding employment development opportunities (EDOs) at a systemic level in order to enhance the experience of international students. Background: The prevalence of dementia is surging that results in huge service demand in the community care services. Dementia care competence of staff working in these settings is fundamental of the care quality. This project aims to examine the effects of staff training on their competence for the anticipated challenges in dementia care and explore how the training influence their care practices.Methods: This study adopted a mixed methods triangulation design, including a prospective multi-center study with pre-test post-test evaluations and a narrative analysis of the participants' reflective essays. Seventeen experienced health and social care professionals were trained as trainers at the Dementia Services Development Centre of the University of Stirling, UK. The trainers provided local facilitator training to staff members by using training materials that were culturally adapted to the local context. The facilitators were required to deliver 12 two-hour in-service training sessions for 6 months to their colleagues in a small group format in their respective workplace. Eventually a total of 1347 staff members from community care centers, day care centers, outreach teams and care homes of 70 non-government organizations in Hong Kong participated in the study between April 2017 and December 2018. Validated instruments were used to measure knowledge, attitude, sense of competence in dementia care and job satisfaction at the baseline and at 12-month follow-up. All participants were required to write a reflective essay to describe their experiences in dementia care by the end of the training.Results: A total of 1264 participants, including 195 facilitators and 1069 learners, completed all assessment were included for analysis. Significant improvements were observed in all outcomes at the 12-month follow-up assessment (Ps ≤ .001). The magnitude of improvements in attitudes was the largest. The findings also showed that the effects of the training program significantly varied across different groups of learners in terms of age, occupation, work and training experience.Conclusions: This community-wide large-scale project provided evidence that the train-the-trainer model and reflective learning are effective means to facilitate situated learning that promote awareness and understanding of dementia, and consequently enhance sustainability of changes in care practices. Africa and the developing world have been the theatre of countless rules of law assistance projects since the end of World War II, with mixed results. While the reasons for the mixed results vary from project to project and from country to country, this paper seeks to address the limitations that arise right from project inception, reviews the cycle of project management from problem construction to monitoring and evaluation, taking into account the core and secondary aspects of project management such as scope, budget, quality, schedule, as well as stakeholder engagement, communication, risk management and performance management. With a focus on the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030, the paper addresses the following aspects: identify challenges of past approaches of major development partners and interrogate the current shift in paradigm by the World Bank, United Nations and the United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DfID). It will consider lessons from complexity and other methodologies, theories of change, theoretical frameworks, and the Problem Driven Iterative Adaptation (PDIA) model as tools for doing development differently. The paper concludes with recommendations on improving the effectiveness of rule of law programmes, including a better approach to project design that makes allowance for results based programming, ease of adaptation, reflective learning through after action reviews and lessons learned from military science's doctrines and practices in the management of complex operations. The paper also recommends, back and forth iteration and better stakeholder engagement, including at the lowest level of governance (local contextualization), to increase effectiveness of rule of law and change in mind-sets especially donor and development partner ideology. Aims: Video Enhanced Reflective Practice (VERP) aims to enhance the practitioner's awareness of the impact of their communication by reflecting on a film of their own practice. Whilst, the VERP procedure has only recently been developed, there is initial evidence of the success of video based reflection on practice. The aims of this research were to investigate how students and staff benefit from the VERP intervention and what adaptations would need to be made to staff training to use the VERP procedure to complement the Engagement Profile and Scale and vice versa. Method/Rationale: Teachers and teaching assistants at a school for children with complex needs took part in a VERP intervention. Prior to the VERP intervention staff had been implementing the Engagement Profile and Scale in their school and were then trained by an educational psychologist to use VERP. Following the 16 week period of training and implementation, participants were interviewed using hierarchical focusing and their transcriptions were thematically analysed. Findings: Overall, the majority of the interview data suggest that the implementation of VERP alongside the Engagement Profile and Scale in a school for children with complex needs led to positive outcomes for staff and students. The barriers to successfully implementing VERP in the school related to a lack of time to take the film and microanalyse it. Limitations: Limitations to the research included participant bias and reliance on self-report. Conclusions: VERP is a useful tool for staff to use alongside the Engagement Profile and Scale in a school for children with complex difficulties in order to better understand and meet their needs. Educational psychologists are well placed to provide VERP training to these schools. In order to improve the training, staff may benefit from: attendance at all training and supervision; more focus on the psychological theory; and time available to embed the intervention into their practice. Despite many clinical psychology training programmes utilising reflective practice groups (RPGs) to develop reflective practice (RP) skills, there remains little research examining how trainees experience these groups. This study uses interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to explore the experiences of eight qualified clinical psychologists who attended RPGs on one United Kingdom (UK) clinical psychology training programme. A purposive sample was recruited for single, semi-structured interviews. Five superordinate themes were identified: 'The process: there were so many layers'; 'The impact: an ongoing process'; 'Commitment: I hated it, but I still went'; 'The facilitator: a presence who was not always present'; and 'Getting through it: finding ways to cope'. The findings illustrate the varied and complex experiences of the participants. Whilst the experience was often difficult, the participants were committed to attending and sought out ways to navigate it. The results are conceptualised in terms of existing psychological theory and literature. A critique of the research and suggestions for future studies are offered, including exploring the views of group facilitators and comparing how groups are utilised within different training programmes. Recommendations are made on the development of future RPGs, which include consideration of the facilitation style and the groups' frequency and size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This project seeks to understand the 'possible worlds, possible selves' (Carr, M., A. B. Smith, J. Duncan, C. Jones, W. Lee, and K. Marshall. 2010. Learning in the Making. Rotterdam: Sense) afforded to children by collaborative imaginative play involving negotiation. We investigate how 3 and 4-year-olds achieve their ends through negotiation and collaboration in imaginary play. Preliminary findings suggest that the ability to influence the play appears to depend on the amount of 'negotiation capital' held by each child. Children engage in a process of 'brinkmanship' assessing how much 'negotiation capital' they hold at any time. The capacity to influence is, therefore, both individually and socially determined and time specific. The study raises questions about how adults can move from being 'solution fixers' with an emphasis on adult determined 'rules' as a way of settling differences of opinion in the nursery to engaging in a more reflective pedagogy where the adult 'tunes' to the child's collaborative play in action. The focus of this study was to examine the nature and function of talent identification in category one football academies in the UK. Data were collected from three participant groups: heads of recruitment (n = 12), recruitment staff (n = 18) and scouts (n = 7). Data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews, conducted either face-to-face or via Skype®. Four themes emerged from the data: (1) league structures in junior grassroots football; (2) reflective practice; (3) looking at the whole player; and (4) luck. The paper concludes by suggesting that there are issues that need to be considered by the football association, county football associations and clubs. Those issues include the organization of leagues in junior football, the education of scouts and recruitment staff around reflective practice and understanding how to identify psycho-social attributes whilst identifying talent. This paper considers the effect on students from attending a university foundation degree programme delivered in partnership with six further education teaching institutions in England. The programme is situated within the early childhood education sector using an instructional design which promotes higher-level learning within the teaching institution and the workplace. Learning in one environment is aligned to the other. The research process actively involved students and was conducted within ethical parameters approved by a university ethics committee. A qualitative methodology examined data drawn from focus groups, an online survey and content analysis. Programme effect was seen as enhancing personal and professional capability and promoting higher-order learning. The findings go some way towards theorisation and documentation of programme effect by identifying the influence of instructional design and extend knowledge about aligning the pace of teaching and learning with professional practice. This paper utilised a two-part mixed-methodology to examine the value placed on judgement and decision-making by a sample of qualified mountain leaders in the UK. Qualified leaders (N = 331) completed a web-based survey and a smaller sample (N = 8) were then interviewed. Survey data showed that mountain leaders place greater value on their judgements and decision-making when compared to the technical skills of mountain navigation and rope work; however, the process for developing these judgement skills was unclear. Interview data identified that judgement skills appear transferrable from other domains experienced by the leaders (e.g. emergency services, military) but are then recontextualised and modified for effective use within mountain leadership. The leaders facilitated this via a nested reflective process that combines in-action, on-action and on-action/in-context aspects that rely on metacognition. This combination of reflection and metacognition allows for rapid development of judgement making skills in-context. Implications for mountain leadership training are discussed. This article examines the modest state of reflective practice in management education despite the increasing need for approaches that challenge the traditional overemphasis on rational tools and techniques. Business communication and business writing in UK management education generally take a very conventional approach to genre. As an antidote, emphasis is laid here on the use of journaling in business education including the lecturers actually doing it themselves routinely. Background Reflective practice provides a backbone to professionalism, a commitment to lifelong learning and competency-based education in the form of reflective portfolios. Changes in health care culture have promoted a move towards openness and reflection on challenging clinical encounters. Issue Engagement with reflection has historically proved challenging to clinical educators. This Faculty Development Review examines this using a case study from the UK in which a postgraduate trainee was asked to disclose their reflective portfolio by a patient's legal representation. Critics have consequently questioned whether the educational benefit of reflection warrants these potential legal implications. In the context of pressure from accrediting bodies to demonstrate evidence of reflection, how can learners face this potential conflict of professional versus legal repercussions? Educational rationale We combine professional guidance from the UK and educational rationale from international settings to produce a guide for good practice. We offer guidance on facilitating reflection for learners in an open and honest way without diluting educationally effective critical reflection. Themes of anonymity, taking a balanced approach, seeking senior advice, focusing on learning outcomes and role-modelling are discussed. The research draws from four case studies to investigate the impact of using blogs within postgraduate education. The study explores how postgraduate business students engage with blogs, whether students’ learning preferences correlate with their degree of contribution and how student participation relates with overall achievement. A mixed methods’ approach is adopted using both qualitative and quantitative data. The findings indicate that blogs can contribute to students’ collective and reflective learning, and emphasise the importance of active feedback from the lecturer. Challenges pertinent to using blogs include the choice of assessment strategies and understanding postgraduate students’ goals and expectations. Statistical analyses revealed significant correlation between students’ degree of contribution and their achievement. Reflective practice is at the core of teacher education programmes and is highly regarded as an essential component in the education of new and experienced teachers. Given the recent interest in language use and the role of discourse in articulating knowledge of one’s practice, this paper focuses on how two groups of early career teachers from distinct teaching contexts engage in reflection. The study aims to (i) investigate how they reflect and (ii) explore to what extent their reflections may be influenced by their contexts. The paper mines two small written sub-corpora, which are part of the larger 200,000-word Corpus of Reflective Practice (CoRP). Using corpus-based tools and methodologies, the paper identifies distinct trends which reveal insights into different conceptualisations of reflective practice. As a result, the paper raises awareness of the need to consider (inter)national cultural sensitivity, and questions the assumption that early career reflective practice is flexible enough to work across cultural, social and institutional differences and influences without more careful guidance and consideration. The paper also highlights a predominant shared trait across the data which signals the need to see reflective practice as a process and to value the kind of reflective practice in which early practitioners engage as being reflective of their stage in the process. There has been little research to develop computing technologies to support the care of people with dementia, in spite of the growing challenges that the condition poses for society. To design such technologies, an existing model of computer-support reflective learning was instantiated with findings from a pre-design study in one residential home. The result was a mobile device running an adapted enterprise social media app to support person-centred care. Evaluations of the device and app in two residential homes revealed that use of the app both motivated and increased different styles of care note recording, but little reflective learning was identified or reported. The results suggest the need for more comprehensive and flexible computer-based support for reflective learning about residents in their care – and new designs of this more comprehensive support are also introduced. Much research is dependent on the willingness of participants to give up their time – whether renumerated or not – and engage with the activities we have designed such as interviews, surveys, writing diaries, and taking photos. We talk about social research being dependent on 'self-selection', but we say less about what happens when the people with whom we wish to engage do not agree to do so; when we are unable to get the insights we need to answer our research questions or respond to our research aims. In this Viewpoint, we discuss three interconnected methodological themes: locating and accessing participants, participant self-selection and identification in the context of the research, and topical fatigue. The study informing this paper set out to reframe evaluation as a collaborative, participatory, dialogical process with a focus on learning rather than accountability. Evaluation, much like reflective practice, has been shaped in terms of individual activity and deficit-based discourses. Using an ‘insider’ approach, an innovative methodology was developed and implemented in a voluntary youth organisation in the UK. Data gathered via semi-structured interviews before and after the implementation were analysed using an inductive thematic analysis approach. The findings suggest that collective spaces for reflection and dialogue are disappearing and yet practitioners highly valued this for its re-energising and restorative properties. Evidence is presented to suggest that narratives, in this case co-constructed stories, enabled collective critical reflection and the development of a shared understanding of practice which in turn supported and strengthened professional autonomy. This paper offers a significant contribution to knowledge in regard to the design and use of participatory evaluation. It is argued that the appreciative, collaborative and reflective aspects of the methodology enabled the learning and development functions to be realised. This paper presents findings from a doctoral study, which investigated effective methods for teaching social sustainability within product design courses in British and Irish universities. This paper explores approaches for encouraging students to explore the social aspects of sustainable product design through workshops specifically designed to foster deep learning through collaboration, discovery and critical reflection. The importance of deep learning is reflected in both the sustainable design education (O'Rafferty et al., 2008, Griffith and Bamford, 2007) and education for sustainability literature (Warburton, 2003) as important to an understanding of the holistic and complex nature of sustainability. Three 'Rethinking Design' workshops were designed and developed as part of the doctoral main study to introduce students to the wider social aspects of sustainability and these were conducted in five universities in Britain and Ireland. The workshops were developed to foster principles that encourage students to adopt deep learning methods, taking into account the specific learning preferences of the current generation of students to enhance motivational factors such as relevance, appropriate teaching materials and opportunities for collaborative learning. The workshops were tested amongst 150 undergraduate and postgraduate students and found to be successful in fostering deep learning by facilitating learning through discovery, critical reflection, peer learning and creativity leading to an exploration of design thinking solutions. This study explored in depth the factors that trigger Specialist Trainees’ reflection and why documented evidence may not always encapsulate their practice. Specialist Trainees in the UK are required to record reflections on their clinical experiences and evidence of their professional development in an e-portfolio. Fifteen qualitative semi-structured interviews were undertaken. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with first year general medical Specialist Trainees in one Deanery in the North of England. Thematic framework analysis of the qualitative interviews generated categories. Four categories emerged from the qualitative data analysis: help/hindering forces; strategic and superficial entries; triggers for reflection; and the role of others, including Educational Supervisors. This study identified clear triggers for reflection but the art of writing it down often seems superficial, sometimes hurried, sometimes selective and often strategic. There is some evidence from this series of semi-structured interviews to suggest that reflective entries are limited by time constraints and also privacy concerns regarding the reliability of security systems within the e-portfolio. Findings suggest that the e-portfolio, in its current form, may not be the most appropriate way of encouraging written accounts of reflective practice. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

As a self-employed sports consultant, I was overwhelmed when three of the athletes I work with were selected for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Working in a minority sport, I knew there would not be scope for me to attend to every step of the way; but like all good sports consultants, I was committed to doing the best I could to ensure these athletes performed at their peak when required. This paper follows my journey as performance coach with one Olympic athlete and the National coach, reviewing practice along the way through interviews, conferences, research, journal entries and the social media. It has led me to what some will see as a surprising conclusion; namely, that most sports science is not used in a functional way. This exploratory study considered Larrivee's assessment of teachers' reflective practice levels by using a formative, weekly, online student evaluation of teaching (SET) tool through a virtual learning environment (VLE) as a means to encourage reflective practice. In-depth interviews were conducted with six faculty members in three departments at a university college in the UK. The study found that: (a) faculty who experienced surface-level reflection were more likely to have a reactive reflection style; and (b) faculty who experienced higher levels of reflection were more likely to have a proactive reflection style. Overall, the tool was found to be an efficient means of encouraging reflection by all participants and demonstrated that reflective practice could come about as a result of these weekly formative SETs. The article discusses research on the use of digital storytelling for reflective learning exercises of undergraduate medical students in Great Britain. It states that there were 12 first-year undergraduate medical students who participated in the said research. Using an autoethnographic approach and drawing on principles of reflective practice, this paper illustrates how a long-standing professional involvement in community education evolved into a personal search for meaning that included engagement with the concept of spirituality. It re-views typologies of community education developed in the UK in the 1980s and argues that, when they are viewed holistically, a spiritual dimension is implicit in them. The paper suggests that spirituality needs to be addressed as a dimension of educational practice and research in order to keep pace with growing popular interests and emergent thinking in the natural sciences. Effective Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) requires appropriate pedagogies that engage learners in transformative learning. These pedagogies include reflective and active learning, involving experiential, collaborative and learner-centred activities. This paper discusses student experiences and perceptions of an interdisciplinary social science ESD course at a UK university that incorporated reflective and active learning by using a 'flipped classroom' (FC) design and innovative assessments. FC creates time in class for reflective and active learning by moving content acquisition to pre-class study. Adoption of the flipped classroom in social sciences is rare and literature on use of FC for ESD is very scarce; hence this paper offers valuable insights into the design of a flipped social science ESD course, and participants' responses. Results of two surveys demonstrate very positive student perceptions of the course, and illustrate several benefits of the FC design. Over 90% of respondents agreed that in-class active learning exercises made the classes more engaging and the material more memorable than usual, offering useful opportunities to put information/learning into practice, with most students expressing strong agreement. In-class mini-lectures were nevertheless also appreciated, as were reflective practices. A large majority of the students considered the workload reasonable. Findings also reveal the importance of incentivising pre-class preparation using graded assessments such as quizzes, which additionally helped students understand/remember content, and gave confidence about contributing in class. It is clear that the active and reflective learning that FC facilitates engages students in ESD. This paper examines the use of peer-videoing in the classroom as a tool to promote reflective practice among student teachers. Twenty pre-service teachers from a variety of subject disciplines participating in a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education programme in an Irish university participated in the study. The practice of encouraging student teachers working in the same school to participate in structured video analysis avoids the impact of external observers whose role is largely evaluative and endorses a collaborative model that promotes dialogue and shared learning. This practice promotes a culture of observation and critical dialogue in a profession which has traditionally been characterised by isolation, while at the same time fostering and validating the voice and experience of the student teacher. Locating the discussion within the framework of the theoretical literature on reflective practice, the purpose of this paper is to contribute to the international debate over best practice in supporting, encouraging and scaffolding reflective practice. Health and social care education has a long established association with reflective learning as a way of developing post‐qualifying professional practice. Reflective learning is also a key feature of self‐regulatory learning, which is an essential aspect of life‐long learning for today’s National Health Service workforce. Using a small‐scale case study of practice this paper considers the experiences of 25 learners who, as qualified health and social care practitioners studying a B.Sc. (Hons.) Public Health programme, used Blackboard to reflect online. Questionnaires, a focus group discussion and examination of online dialogue were used to collect data. Findings suggest that learners developed more extensive reflective accounts than they had done previously when reflecting in traditional classroom environments. They reflected further, spent longer reflecting, self‐managed their reflective learning and recognised significant learning achievements through reflection. Data indicate varying levels of engagement in the online reflective process, with not all learners achieving a deep level of critical analysis. Background: Public involvement in research is an established part of the research process in the UK, however there remain questions about what good public involvement in research looks and feels like. Until now public involvement practitioners, researchers and members of the public have looked for answers in examples shared across networks, published case studies, guidance and research articles. Pulling these strands together, the UK Standards for Public Involvement provides six statements (standards) about public involvement in research. They were produced by a partnership of organisations from Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England with contributions from involvement practitioners, public partners, researchers and research funders. Main body: Each standard has reflective questions, which are designed to encourage standard users to use approaches and behaviours that improve involvement, over time. The standards are designed to be used as a practical tool, and reflect the agreed hallmarks of good public involvement in research for example, flexibility in approaches used, shared learning, and mutual respect. The standards development process is described from the initial idea and scoping, via the appraisal of existing standard sets and integration of values and principles in public involvement in research. The collaborative writing process of and consultation on the draft standard set is described, together with what changed as a result of feedback. The initiation of a year-long testing programme with forty participating research organisations, the experiential feedback and the resulting changes to the standards is summarised. Conclusion: This commentary paper describes, in some detail, a process to develop a set of six standards for public involvement in research in the UK. Producing a complex, national public involvement initiative is not without its challenges, and in supplementary material partnership members reflect on and share their experiences of standards development. Introduction: Patient and staff experiences are strongly influenced by attitudes and behaviours, and provide important insights into care quality. Patient and staff feedback could be used more effectively to enhance behaviours and improve care through systematic integration with techniques for reflective learning. We aim to develop a reflective learning framework and toolkit for healthcare staff to improve patient, family and staff experience., Methods & Analysis: Local project teams including staff and patients from the acute medical units (AMUs) and intensive care units (ICUs) of three National Health Service trusts will implement two experience surveys derived from existing instruments: a continuous patient and relative survey and an annual staff survey. Survey data will be supplemented by ethnographic interviews and observations in the workplace to evaluate barriers to and facilitators of reflective learning. Using facilitated iterative co-design, local project teams will supplement survey data with their experiences of healthcare to identify events, actions, activities and interventions which promote personal insight and empathy through reflective learning. Outputs will be collated by the central project team to develop a reflective learning framework and toolkit which will be fed back to the local groups for review, refinement and piloting. The development process will be mapped to a conceptual theory of reflective learning which combines psychological and pedagogical theories of learning, alongside theories of behaviour change based on capability, opportunity and motivation influencing behaviour.
