It is no secret that the American intellectual and business communities have for some time had very little to say to one another. To those preoccupied with the life of the mind, the world of commerce has appeared at best irrelevant and at worst morally inferior. Similarly, to those concerned with the life of commerce, the world of abstract ideas has appeared at best merely impractical and at worst ideologically suspect. On the few occasions when communication between the two communities has become necessary, the result has more often been angry recrimination than productive discourse. From this unfortunate state of affairs, both sides have suffered. With little direct knowledge of capitalism, intellectuals have written and argued in a vacuum; with little time for abstract ideas, business people have been unable to formulate a broadly satisfactory rationale for what they do or for the economic system they represent. But, as the author of this article suggests, this stalemate is at last breaking down.
