The 3.1 pound weight no longer seems ultralight, but considering it has an optical drive built in and the Centrino chipset makes an extended life battery. The C Series Lifebook 2300 laptop from Fujitsu costs about $1500. Nearly 13 inches wide, 11.25 inches deep and weighing in at just under eight pounds. Battery life is less than spectacular, with an estimate of a bit over two hours, though the high capacity battery will double that.

Two-way SMS, e-mail, notifications, and voicemail messaging is supported. The Sony Vaio Z1 (suggested retail price: $2,299.99) packs a lot into a lightweight laptop. Thin and sleek, with a signature curve along the sides that looks like it's just there for coolness but also protect the ports and strengthens the magnesium case. The full featured Z1 features a 1.7 GHz Centrino processor, 512 MB of memory (minimum), and a 60 GB hard drive

HP was showing the HP Forms Automation System optical recognition pen and paper microgrid system, which transfers writing to a computer.

At the top of the list of popular add-ons is Bluetooth, a wireless Personal Area Network connection. There is a long legacy of Pocketable Palmtop PDA, starting with the HP95LX and failing after Psion gave up making the Revo and Hewlett-Packard migrated their platform to something the size of a small laptop. A few companies held on though, notably Sharp with its Zaurus Mobilon, but they finally succumbed to market pressure to go to the pad format. The T2 Palm, which is available and selling for $399, gets a colorful transflective display and Bluetooth connectivity. As promised, Microsoft released Pocket PC 2003 on June 23, 2003. This is more of a technology refresh than a new operating system, with most of its features aimed at working with the Microsoft.NET strategy. There is an improved Connection Manager to make setting up devices and getting on networks easier and more flexible, and a new image viewing/editing application as well. The upgraded OS lets programmers take advantage of features in Intel's X-Scale processors, and adds Pocket MSN and a new application for viewing and editing images, called Pictures. Pocket PC 2003 moves the OS towards Microsoft's .NET strategy, and further releases will integrate it fully.
