vol. 79 no. 5, "Column Platoon Leading Platoon" seems to be the order of the day as girls vie for Derby honors. The above event was one of many during the field day of Derby Week. (p. 1). An explosive roar from a pistol shot, and the action freezes, much to the delight of the students during "Oklahoma," one of the numbers done in last week's choral program presented in Branscomb Auditorium. (p. 2). Lee Rust, a junior at the College, has written over 200 songs and written one song which was later recorded by Elvis Presley. (p. 4). Tragedy strikes the farm! Nellie, her mother, and the neighbor girl ponder their fate. (p. 5). "Yeah, well you don't look so great in your bermuda shorts either, Dr. Hoffman," Mr. David Readdick seems to be saying. The Vagabonds, campus theatrical group, has provided students, faculty and townspeople many an exciting evening with the theatre. (p. 4) -- Students take advantage of the opportunity to watch intercollegiate athletics and the well-rounded campus intramural program. (p. 4) -- Branscombe Auditorium now affords the students an opportunity for campus-wide meetings as well as weekly convocations. Southern's ROTC program plays an important part in the lives of all students as well as the administration, as this formal review illustrates. Steve Hockensmith, collects a single for one of the Mocs' nine hits in the 15-8 loss to the Gators. Hockensmith delivered another hit Tuesday which helped upset the University of Florida 3-2 in 10 innings. Southern plays Florida State and Valdosta State over the spring vacation. vol. 76 no. 15, Last Friday the faculty presented a check for $5,000 to the United Fund Drive. On behalf of the faculty, Dr. Robert V. Guthrie, center, presented the donation to Quintin Hicks, left, representing the United Fund. The faculty drew this money from a fund they set aside by deducting a certain percentage monthly from their pay checks. Money from this fund also is used for other worthy projects. Head of arrangements from the disbursement of this fund is David Readdick, shown at the above right. Other members of the committee include Rev. Francis Luce and Dr. Derrell Roberts. This fund began in the days when the late Ludd M. Spivey, president emeritus of Florida Southern, was in office. This year the donation to the United Fund increased by $200 over last year's $4,800. vol. 79 no. 2, After being welcomed to the fraternity house, a rushee signs-in during fall rush last week. The picture is a typical of activity of Greek men during rush week. (p. 1) -- Southern's Greek women held a series of parties this week, getting acquainted with the transfers and other women participating in rush. The parties were both formal and informal, giving everyone a chance to "just be themselves," as the above picute illustrates. (p. 1). The Rev. Stuart I. The presentation was Southern's first attempt at an outdoor production held successively Founders' weekend and the following weekend. Starring roles in the play were Al Lewison as Sid, the factory superintendent, and Bonnie Belloc as Babe, head of the union grievance committee.
