Ponies with recurrent airway obstruction (principal ponies) and their controls were given aerosolized Micropolyspora faeni antigen via endotracheal tube during a period when the principal ponies were in disease remission. In both groups of ponies, we performed bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and measured pulmonary function at base line, and 5 hours after aerosol administration of 30 ml of 0.9% NaCl solution or 30 ml of 1% w/v particulate M faeni antigen in 0.9% NaCl solution. In both groups of ponies, aerosolized M faeni antigen increased WBC count, neutrophil numbers, and albumin concentration in BAL fluid, but macrophage numbers decreased. In the principal ponies, BAL mast cell numbers were decreased 5 hours after administration of M faeni antigen. The M faeni antigen had no effect on the mechanical properties of the lungs or on gas exchange in the control ponies, but did increase respiratory frequency minute ventilation and pulmonary resistance, and decreased arterial oxygen tension in the principal ponies. Changes in pulmonary function were apparent only in the principal ponies, which suggests that neutrophils, per se, do not cause pulmonary dysfunction and that M faeni may be one of the etiologic agents involved in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Two cases of intranasal caseous fibrinous plugs causing upper respiratory distress in two African grey parrots are described. The causal bacterial agents in one case were Klebsiella spp., Bacillus mycoides, Staphylococcus epidermitis, and Pasteurella multocida. Both cases produced pressure necrosis and obstruction of the naris.

Male and female F344 rats choked on fecal pellets and regurgitant during the course of two long-term experiments. Each study involved feeding standard and high bulk diets containing 10% wood cellulose or 10% chrysotile asbestos fiber. Choke deaths occurred at all stages of the experiments. A total of 36 of 774 (4.6%) rats in the two studies died of choke. Females died of choke more frequently (26/382 or 6.8%) than did males (10/392 or 2.6%). Rats on high bulk diets were affected more frequently (33/571 or 5.8%), especially those on 10% asbestos diet (26/311 or 8.4%, than rats consuming standard diet (3/190 or 1.6%). The reason for the difference between females and males was not determined. Although choke may be related to some characteristics of high nonnutritive bulk feed fed in pellet form, the higher risk for females even on standard diet (3/95 or 3.2%) than for males (0/95) indicated that more than one factor operated in the etiology of these events.

Fibreoptic endoscopy was used to study the movements of the larynx and pharynx during nasal occlusion in 10 horses, which showed signs consistent with functional pharyngeal obstruction (FPO) on exercise. Cine-endoscopic films were made on 3 such horses. Consideration of the anatomy of the region indicates that FPO may best be regarded as a subluxation of the nasopharyngeal and larygneal airways and it was found that a constant component of the movements which brought about this subluxation was a marked caudal retraction of the larynx. It is suggested that this caudal retraction of the larynx occurred as a result of the action of th sternothyrohyoid and omohyoid muscles and that removal of a portion of these muscles might prevent subsequent airway subluxation in horses prone to FPO on exercise.

Initial management of the seriously injured animal involves the immediate recognition of life-threatening abnormalities and prompt resuscitation based on priorities of care. Of equal importance to the ultimate survival of the animal is an aggressive approach to the diagnosis and control of the complications and sequelae of injury. This approach to patient care requires constant attention to details, but offers the most efficient management of these critically ill animals.

Postoperative laryngeal webbing in four dogs was corrected with a mucosal flap technique using mucosa harvested from the lateral wall of the laryngeal ventricle. Airway obstruction caused by the webbing was relieved in all dogs. Follow-up time was 3 months to 5 years. The technique allowed mucosal apposition without undue tension on the suture line.

Effects of ventriculectomy and prosthetic laryngoplasty on upper airway flow mechanics and blood gas tensions in exercising horses with induced left laryngeal hemiplegia were assessed. Five adult horses were trained to stand, trot (4.5 m/s), and gallop (7.2 m/s) on a treadmill (6.38 degrees incline). Inspiratory and expiratory airflows (VImax, VEmax, respectively) were measured using a 15.2-cm diameter pneumotachograph in a face mask. Inspiratory and expiratory transupper airway pressures (PuI, PuE, respectively) were determined as pressure differences between barometric pressure and lateral tracheal pressure. Blood collected from exteriorized carotid arteries was analyzed for PaO2, PaCO2, pH, hemoglobin (Hb) content, and HCO3- values. Heart rate (HR) was determined with an HR monitor. Measurements were made with horses standing, trotting, and galloping before left recurrent laryngeal neurectomy (LRLN; base line), 14 days after LRLN, 30 days after ventriculectomy (44 days after LRLN), and 14 days after prosthetic laryngoplasty (58 days after LRLN). Before LRLN (base line), increasing treadmill speed for horses from standing to the trot and gallop progressively increased HR, respiratory frequency, VImax, VEmax, PuI, PuE, Hb, and PaCO2 values and decreased PaO2, pH, and HCO3- values; inspiratory and expiratory impedances were unchanged. After LRLN, inspiratory impedance and PuI were significantly (P less than 0.05) increased in horses at the trot and gallop, and PaCO2 was significantly increased in horses at the gallop. The VImax and respiratory frequency were significantly (P less than 0.05) decreased in horses at the gallop. Left recurrent laryngeal neurectomy had no effect on PuE, VEmax, HR, PaO2, pH, Hb, or expiratory impedance values.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Esophageal strictures developed in 7 horses that were treated for esophageal obstruction. A soft diet was fed to all horses, with intermittent nasogastric tube feeding in one, and medication included nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Maximal reduction in esophageal lumen diameter was evident by 30 days following circumferential esophageal ulceration, after which lumen diameter increased rapidly. Five horses were clinically normal by 60 days after the esophageal injury. Two horses were euthanatized at the owner's request, 16 and 17 days after the original insult.

We examined the response of five ponies with recurrent airway obstruction (principals) and five age- and gender-matched controls to the aerosol alpha-adrenergic agonist phenylephrine after blockade with propranolol and atropine. Measurements were made with principal ponies in clinical remission (period A) and during acute airway obstruction (period B). The blockade had no effect on base-line pulmonary mechanics in control ponies during periods A and B or in the principal ponies during period A. However, in the principal ponies during period B, blockade increased dynamic compliance (Cdyn) and decreased pulmonary resistance (RL). Phenylephrine had no effect on the controls during either period. In the principals, phenylephrine decreased Cdyn and increased RL during both periods. The alpha 1-agonist aerosol prazosin shifted the phenylephrine dose-response curves to the right, but prasozin did not bronchodilate the principals during period B. This suggests that the role of alpha 1-adrenergic receptors in airway narrowing in ponies with recurrent airway obstruction is minimal. However, the response to phenylephrine in only the principal ponies suggests an increase in alpha-receptor numbers and/or activity in these animals compared with controls.

Pulmonary function and airway reactivity to IV histamine were measured in a group of ponies with a history of recurrent airway obstruction (heaves) and their age-, weight-, and gender-matched controls. Ponies were studied during a period of clinical remission (period A), after exposure to a barn environment (period B), and twice during a 2-week recovery phase (periods C and D). At periods A, C, and D, PaO2, dynamic compliance (Cdyn), pulmonary resistance, tidal volume, respiratory frequency, and the log dose of histamine required to reduce Cdyn to 65% of base-line value (log ED65Cdyn) of principals and controls did not differ. Barn exposure (period B) decreased Cdyn, PaO2, and ED65Cdyn and increased pulmonary resistance in principals but not controls. The slope of the histamine dose-Cdyn response curves was not different between principal and control groups of ponies and was unaffected by barn exposure or return to pasture. There was a poor correlation between ED65Cdyn and indices of airway caliber. During acute airway obstruction, ponies with a history of heaves were hyperreactive to IV histamine, but during disease remission, airway response to histamine was not different from that of control ponies. Seemingly, hyperreactivity in principal ponies after exposure to a barn environment cannot be explained solely by alterations in base-line airway caliber.
