51. Barriers to accessing and using health insurance cards among methadone maintenance treatment patients in northern Vietnam

Abstract: Abstract Background Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) patients face unique costs associated with their healthcare expenditures. As such, it is important that these patients have access to health insurance (HI) to help them pay for both routine and unforeseen health services. In this study, we explored factors related to health insurance enrollment and utilization among MMT patients, to move Vietnam closer to universal coverage among this patient population. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1003 patients enrolled in MMT in five clinics in Hanoi and Nam Dinh provinces. Patients were asked a range of questions about their health, health expenditures, and health insurance access and utilization. We used multivariate logistic regressions to determine factors associated with health insurance access among participants. Results The majority of participants (nearly 80%) were not currently enrolled in health insurance at the time of the study. Participants from rural regions were significantly more likely than urban participants to report difficulty using HI. Family members of participants from rural regions were more likely to have overall poor service quality through health insurance compared with family members of participants from urban regions. Overall, 37% of participants endorsed a lack of information about HI, nearly 22% of participants reported difficulty accessing HI, 22% reported difficulty using HI, and more than 20% stated they had trouble paying for HI. Older, more highly educated, and employed participants were more likely to have an easier time accessing HI than their younger, less well educated, and unemployed counterparts. HIV-positive participants were more likely to have sufficient information about health insurance options. Conclusions Our study highlights the dearth of health insurance utilization among MMT patients in northern Vietnam. It also sheds light on factors associated with increased access to and utilization of health insurance among this underserved population. These results can help improve health insurance enrollment among MMT patients, a population that is at increased need of financial assistance in accessing health services.

Abstract: Abstract Background The expansion of methadone maintenance treatment in mountainous areas in still limited and little is known about its health impacts on drug users. This study aimed to examine health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and health care access among patients engaging in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) in Tuyen Quang, a mountainous province in Vietnam. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional survey with 241 patients conveniently recruited in two MMT clinics (Son Duong and Tuyen Quang). EuroQol-5 Dimensions – 5 levels (EQ-5D-5 L) and Visual analogue scale (VAS) were employed to measure HRQOL. Multivariate logistic and tobit regressions were used to determine the factors associated with HRQOL and health care utilization. Results The overall mean score of the EQ-5D index and EQ-VAS were 0.88 (SD = 0.20) and 81.8% (SD = 15.27%), respectively. Only 8.7% utilized inpatient services, and 14.9% used outpatient services. Being more highly educated, suffering acute diseases, and using health service within the last 12 months were associated with a decreased EQ-5D index. Individuals who were multiple substance abusers and those who recently had inpatient care were more likely to have a lower VAS. Older respondents, those taking their medications at the more impoverished clinic, substance abusers, and individuals who were struggling with anxiety/depression or their usual daily activities were more likely to use both inpatient and outpatient care. Conclusions In summary, we observed good HRQOL, but high prevalence of anxiety/depression and low rates of service utilization among MMT patients in Tuyen Quang province. To improve the outcomes of MMT services in mountainous areas, it is necessary to introduce personalized and integrative services models with counseling and interventions on multiple substance use.

Abstract: Most studies of T lymphocytes focus on recognition of classical major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I or II molecules presenting oligopeptides, yet there are numerous variations and exceptions of biological significance based on recognition of a wide variety of nonclassical MHC molecules. These include αβ and γδ T cells that recognize different class Ib molecules (CD1, MR-1, HLA-E, G, F, et al.) that are nearly monomorphic within a given species. Collectively, these T cells can be considered "unconventional," in part because they recognize lipids, metabolites, and modified peptides. Unlike classical MHC-specific cells, unconventional T cells generally exhibit limited T-cell antigen receptor (TCR) repertoires and often produce innate immune cell-like rapid effector responses. Exploiting this system in new generation vaccines for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), tuberculosis (TB), other infectious agents, and cancer was the focus of a recent workshop, "Immune Surveillance by Non-classical MHC Molecules: Improving Diversity for Antigens," sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Here, we summarize salient points presented regarding the basic immunobiology of unconventional T cells, recent advances in methodologies to measure unconventional T-cell activity in diseases, and approaches to harness their considerable clinical potential.

Abstract: Spanis abstract. El diseño e implementación de sistemas informáticos para las organizaciones deben basarse en las políticas y reglas del negocio. Hoy día se considera ventajoso aplicar el enfoque de reglas de negocio en el desarrollo de sistemas de información, y de esta manera garantizar la inserción y modificación de las reglas de manera automática. Una de las formas para implementar un sistema de información usando reglas de negocio, es a través del tipo de herramienta independiente de los gestores de datos, pero que genera recursos de bases de datos. Ante la necesidad de desarrollar un sistema de información transaccional para la gestión de menús de comedores en la UCLV, se hizo necesaria una aplicación cuya interfaz de entrada realice las operaciones de inserción y actualización en una base de datos. La existencia de un conjunto de reglas de negocio que deben ser chequeadas al realizar estas operaciones, hace posible la utilización de la herramienta LPT-SQL con vistas a disminuir el esfuerzo de programación al insertar el código, que garantiza el cumplimiento de las reglas, y su posible modificación independientemente de la interfaz de usuario. English abstract The design and implementation of informatics systems for the organizations must be based in the business policies and rules. Nowadays, to apply a focus on business rules in the development of information systems is considered advantageous, hence guarantee the automatic insertion and modification of rules. One of the ways to implement an information system using business rules is through the independent tool type of the data managers, but that generates data bases resources. In view of the need to develop a transactional information system for the menus management of UCLV dining centres, an application which input interface makes the insert and update operations on a database was necessary. The existence of a set of business rules that must be checked to perform this operations, make the usage of the LPT-SQL tool possible. Consequently, the programming effort to insert the code is reduced ensuring the compliance of the rules and its possible modification regardless the user interface.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to explore health-seeking behaviors and barriers faced in accessing care among homeless youth living in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Twelve in-depth interviews were conducted with homeless youth aged 18 to 25. Participants were identified using purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using constructivist grounded theory techniques. Interviews with youth revealed that while living on the streets, they had to balance their need for security with attending to their daily survival needs, which led to a disconnection from thinking about their health. When faced with a major health issue, youth turned to their informal networks of support instead of seeking immediate medical care. To manage their basic health needs, youth obtained medicine and health advice from local pharmacies and sought advice from social workers. Homeless youth interviewed in this study relied on an informal network of peers, social workers, and pharmacies when engaging with the health care system. They also faced several barriers to accessing health services, many of which are tied specifically to policies that make homelessness discriminated against in Vietnam. Within Vietnam’s unique political and social context, there is a need for increased collaboration between service providers such as health clinics, local pharmacies, and social workers to provide appropriate health services to this vulnerable population.

59. A DNA inducing VLP vaccine designed for HIV and tested in mice.

Abstract: We developed a DNA vaccine that induces the formation of a VLP in vivo. This VLP was designed to elicit neutralizing antibodies, to induce better T-cell responses and to activate the innate immune system. Overall, 5 groups of 10 mice were electroporated with the following constructs: pVLP-LTR-GagPro [full], pVLP-GagPro [VLP wihout RNA], pVLP-LTR-Gag [VLP immature], pVLP-Gag and pVLP-EnvBG505 [regular DNA vaccine] and a mock group. We performed ICS on the mouse spleens and performed ELISA for ENV antibodies and a Luminex assay for inflammatory cytokines. The VLP showed good binding to the neutralizing antibodies. The percentage of CD4 cells producing cytokines was 0.1% [IFNg], 0.15%[IL-2] and 0.2% [TNFa] for the construct pVLP-LTR-GagPro. The percentage of CD8 cells producing cytokines was 0.3%[IFNg], 0.2%[IL-2] and 0.25%[TNFa]. All pVLP constructs induced more antibodies for EnvBG505 than the regular DNA vaccine Env. The pVLP-LTR-GagPro induced more IL-1B than the other constructs 24 hours post-vaccination.

60. Influencia del ambiente lumínico sobre la cobertura vegetal y metabolismos fotosintéticos en comunidades de sotobosque

Abstract: The characteristics of forest plantations condition the dynamics of photosynthetically active radiation under the tree canopy and its area of influence, determining the development of understory communities. The purpose of this work was to study the relationships between the lighting environment and vegetation cover (%), the existing species and their photosynthetic metabolism. The study was performed in commercial forest plantations, along nine transects in a North-to-South direction that were located between rows, in alleys and natural grasslands, by placing 15 frames of 0.25 square meters every two meters in each one of them. The photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) value for each environment was recorded between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. P. taeda and E. grandis displayed similar light interception while E. globulus provided a greater passage of PAR transmission into the forest floor, with favourable consequences to the development of the herbaceous structure community of the underbrush. C4 species increased their coverage when faced with elevated PAR levels. On the contrary, C3 species achieved greater coverage during intermediate levels of light interception. Higher levels of light interception indicate a lower coverage of the underbrush community, and the species with C4 metabolic pathways were the most affected, Las características de las plantaciones forestales condicionan la dinámica de la radiación fotosintéticamente activa bajo el dosel arbóreo y su área de influencia, determinando el desarrollo de comunidades de sotobosque. El objetivo del trabajo fue estudiar las relaciones entre el ambiente lumínico y la cobertura vegetal (%), las especies presentes y sus metabolismos fotosintéticos. El estudio se realizó en plantaciones forestales comerciales, en nueve transectos con dirección N – S ubicados en la entre fila, callejones y campo natural, localizando 15 marcos de 0,25 m2 a cada dos metros en cada una. Se determinó la radiación fotosintéticamente activa (RFA) en cada uno de los ambientes en el horario de 11:00 a 13:00 hrs. P. taeda y E. grandis mostraron un régimen de interceptación luminosa similar, en cambio E. globulus determina un mayor pasaje de RFA trasmitida (RFAt) hacia el piso forestal, con la consecuencia favorable sobre el desarrollo de la comunidad herbácea de sotobosque. Especies C4 aumentan su cobertura frente a incrementos en los niveles de RFA, en tanto, especies C3 logran la mayor cobertura en niveles intermedios de intercepción luminosa. Altos niveles de interceptación luminosa determinan una baja cobertura de la comunidad de sotobosque, y las especies con vía metabólica C4 fueron las más afectadas.

Abstract: Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are an extremely common set of more than 50 disorders characterized by persistent and recurring gastrointestinal symptoms. Most of these patients can be diagnosed and managed by primary care physicians. Treatment includes patient education and reassurance, eliminating triggers, dietary modification, and pharmacologic management. Primary care physicians should consider referral to gastroenterologists when patients exhibit red flag symptoms such as blood in stool, abnormal laboratory findings, involuntary weight loss, age of presentation greater than 50 years, or certain concerning family history.

Abstract: Introducción: los rápidos y constantes cambios en el ambiente de los negocios afectan tanto a los negocios como a las aplicaciones informáticas. Las aplicaciones médicas manejan gran cantidad de reglas para adoptar decisiones que requieren mucha precisión. Los especialistas necesitan comprender con facilidad los sistemas para adaptarlos a las nuevas necesidades. Objetivo: es en este artículo aplicar el enfoque de reglas de negocio (RN) en el desarrollo sistemas de información (SI) que permite usar el lenguaje médico para la captura de los requisitos necesarios. Material y métodos. Para el desarrollo del trabajo se emplea la documentación disponible sobre el tema y se realizan entrevistas a los especialistas para identificar un amplio conjunto de RN. Resultados: El presente trabajo muestra el desarrollo de una aplicación para el control de pacientes en el área de trasplante renal empleando dicho enfoque, lo que facilita asumir el reto de actualización de los sistemas a nuevas condiciones impuestas por los avances médicos. Conclusiones: Estos resultados muestran la efectividad y validez de la captura de RN desde la perspectiva de los usuarios del negocio.Introduction: Business and computer applications are affected by the rapid and continuing changes in business environment. Medical applications handle large number of rules to make decisions that require high precision. Specialists need to understand easily the systems to adapt them to new conditions. Objective: The goal of this article is to apply the business rules approach (BRA) in the development of information systems (IS) in order to enable the use of medical language to capture the requirements. Material and methods: The development stage of this paper uses the available literature on the subject, and specialists' interviews to identify a broad set of business rules (BR). Results. This work shows the development of an application for monitoring patients in the kidney transplantation area using this approach, which facilitate the challenge of upgrading systems to new conditions imposed by medical advances. Conclusions: These results show the effectiveness and validity of the capture of BR from the perspective of business users.

In this article, we document our experiences conducting two related studies on HIV/AIDS in Northern Vietnam. We describe how our research relied on harnessing the social capital of vital community stakeholders, such as key informants, interpreters, and host organizations, to effectively engage with government bodies on a macro level and with local communities on a microlevel. By highlighting our processes, pitfalls, and successes, we provide current and future scholars with strategies to use when conducting cross-national field research.

Abstract: Annual winter pastures are strategic components in crop-livestock systems in Uruguay. The aim of this study was to evaluate the N legume fixation into an annual ryegrass pasture contrasted to the N fertilizer addition. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with 2x2 factorial arrangement of the treatments, two pasture types: a) annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) pasture, and b) of annual ryegrass with two annual legume species (Trifolium resupinatum L. and Trifolium vesiculosum L.); and two levels of N fertilizer: a) no N fertilizer, and b) 64 kg N ha-1. They were grazed with Holstein steers. Setaria italica crop was planted in summer to evaluate the carry over effects of the treatments on its herbage mass production. Pasture accumulated herbage mass was significantly increased with N fertilizer (P ≤ 0.01), increment of 1277 ± 322.5 kg DM ha-1. The legume species’ addition plus N fertilization led to a higher nitrogen nutrition index in the mixed pastures. Ryegrass herbage mass was positively influenced by N addition, but with that there was a 47% of weed herbage mass increase in the pure annual ryegrass pastures. The average daily gain of steers was positively influenced by legumes, with an average of 1.01 kg PV day-1 in mixtures. N fertilizer addition allowed a higher stocking rate and higher animal production in winter. A carryover effect of the treatments was not found on S. italica accumulated herbage mass. Legumes’ addition to annual ryegrass allowed a greater animal performance but did not provide any additional benefit to the following summer crop. Las pasturas anuales de invierno son componentes estratégicos de los sistemas agropecuarios en Uruguay. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de la fijación biológica de N de leguminosas en una mezcla con raigrás anual en contraste con la adición de fertilizante nitrogenado. El diseño experimental fue un diseño de bloques completos al azar con arreglo factorial 2 x 2 de los tratamientos, con dos tipos de pasturas: a) pastura de raigrás anual (Lolium multiflorum L.), y b) pastura mezcla de raigrás anual con dos especies de leguminosas anuales (Trifolium resupinatum L. y Trifolium vesiculosum L.); y dos niveles de fertilización con N: a) sin fertilizante, y b) 64 kg N ha-1. Las pasturas fueron pastoreadas con novillos Holstein. En verano se realizó un cultivo de Setaria italica para evaluar los efectos de los tratamientos en la producción de biomasa de este. La biomasa acumulada de las pasturas de invierno incrementó significativamente con fertilización de N (P ≤ 0.01), con un incremento de 1277 ± 322.5 kg MS ha-1. La pastura mezcla fertilizada con N produjo un mayor índice de nutrición nitrogenada que la pastura de raigrás anual. La biomasa aérea de raigrás presentó un incremento con el agregado de N; sin embargo, en las pasturas monofíticas de raigrás hubo un aumento del 47% de malezas. La ganancia media diaria de los novillos incrementó con la incorporación de leguminosas, con un promedio en las pasturas mezclas de 1,01 kg PV día-1. La adición de fertilizante nitrogenado permitió una mayor carga animal y una mayor producción animal en invierno. No se encontró un efecto de los tratamientos en la biomasa acumulada de S. italica. 65. Real-time sampling of reasons for hedonic food consumption: Further validation of the Palatable Eating Motives Scale

Abstract: Highly palatable foods play a salient role in obesity and binge-eating, and if habitually eaten to deal with intrinsic and extrinsic factors unrelated to metabolic need, may compromise adaptive coping and interpersonal skills. This study used event sampling methodology (ESM) to examine whether individuals who report eating palatable foods primarily to cope, to enhance reward, to be social, or to conform, as measured by the Palatable Eating Motives Scale (PEMS), actually eat these foods primarily for the motive(s) they report on the PEMS. Secondly this study examined if the previously reported ability of the PEMS Coping motive to predict BMI would replicate if the real-time (ESM-reported) coping motive was used to predict BMI. A total of 1691 palatable eating events were collected from 169 college students over 4 days. Each event included the day, time, and types of tasty foods or drinks consumed followed by a survey that included an abbreviated version of the PEMS, hunger as an additional possible motive, and a question assessing general perceived stress during the eating event. Two-level mixed modeling confirmed that ESM-reported motives correlated most strongly with their respective PEMS motives and that all were negatively associated with eating for hunger. While stress surrounding the eating event was strongly associated with the ESM-coping motive, its inclusion in the model as a predictor of this motive did not abolish the significant association between ESM and PEMS Coping scores. Regression models confirmed that scores on the ESM-coping motive predicted BMI. These findings provide ecological validity for the PEMS to identify true-to-life motives for consuming palatable foods. This further adds to the utility of the PEMS in individualizing, and hence improving, treatment strategies for obesity, binge-eating, dietary nutrition, coping, reward acquisition, and psychosocial skills.

Abstract: Una de las tendencias actuales en el desarrollo de los sistemas de información es su conducción mediante el enfoque de reglas de negocio. Las reglas de negocio que son tratadas en este trabajo son aquellas conocidas como reglas de restricción y permiten expresar restricciones de integridad sobre datos en una base de datos. Este tipo de regla puede ser implementada más cerca de los datos. Ellas pueden involucrar a varias tablas de una base de datos, y para generar la regla, lo más importante es descubrir automáticamente a qué tabla debe ser aplicada, y con qué recursos se puede aplicar. En este artículo se propone un método para resolver esta problemática para las reglas de restricción cuando la base de datos ya ha sido creada. Los ejemplos utilizados se refieren a parte de una aplicación para el control del trasplante renal.

75. Multidisciplinary management of laryngeal pathology identified in patients with COVID-19 following trans-laryngeal intubation and tracheostomy

Abstract: Background COVID-19 disease often requires invasive ventilatory support. Trans-laryngeal intubation of the trachea may cause laryngeal injury, possibly compounded by coronavirus infection. Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) provides anatomical and functional assessment of the larynx, guiding multidisciplinary management. Our aims were to observe the nature of laryngeal abnormalities in patients with COVID-19 following prolonged trans-laryngeal intubation and tracheostomy, and to describe their impact on functional laryngeal outcomes, such as tracheostomy weaning.Methods A retrospective observational cohort analysis was undertaken between March and December 2020, at a UK tertiary hospital. The Speech and Language Therapy team assessed patients recovering from COVID-19 with voice/swallowing problems identified following trans-laryngeal intubation or tracheostomy using FEES. Laryngeal pathology, treatments, and outcomes relating to tracheostomy and oral feeding were noted.Results Twenty-five FEES performed on 16 patients identified a median of 3 (IQR 2–4) laryngeal abnormalities, with 63% considered clinically significant. Most common pathologies were: oedema (n = 12, 75%); abnormal movement (n = 12, 75%); atypical lesions (n = 11, 69%); and erythema (n = 6, 38%). FEES influenced management: identifying silent aspiration (88% of patients who aspirated (n = 8)), airway patency issues impacting tracheostomy weaning (n = 8, 50%), targeted dysphagia therapy (n = 7, 44%); ENT referral (n = 6, 38%) and reflux management (n = 5, 31%).Conclusions FEES is beneficial in identifying occult pathologies and guiding management for laryngeal recovery. In our cohort, the incidence of laryngeal pathology was higher than a non-COVID-19 cohort with similar characteristics. We recommend multidisciplinary investigation and management of patients recovering from COVID-19 who required prolonged trans-laryngeal intubation and/or tracheostomy to optimise laryngeal recovery.

Abstract: With the purpose of developing a methodology for the propagation in vitro of Eucalyptus grandis (former Hill Maiden), they were carried out investigations that embraced from the pretratamiento of the donating plants until the evaluation of the plants in vitro in the field. The results showed that the previous application of fungicides and insecticides to the plants donating 21-30 days before the establishment it increased the efficiency of this phase, in which the best results in the disinfection were obtained with the application of hipoclorito of sodium to 1.0% during 10 minutes. With the addition of 6-bencilaminopurina and sour naftalenacético (0.1 mg.l-1) in the multiplication phase buds of more quality were obtained, that showed 75% rooting when they were individualized and transferred to a means of cultivation with 0.3 mg.l-1 of AIB. The evaluations carried out in the field to the in vitro plants demonstrated a dynamics of very superior growth to those taken place starting from seeds. Abstract: Supplementing calves on deferred native grasslands during their first winter, helps overcoming the nutritive deficits which occur during this season. However, the demand of both qualification and availability of labour may restrain its adoption. The objective of this work was to evaluate calves’ average daily live weight gain (ADG) and supplemental feed efficiency (SFE) as a response to self-feeding methods. Two experiments (Exp) were carried out: i) Exp A, on sandy soils with Braford calves and, ii) Exp B on basaltic soils with Hereford calves. In each experiment 40 castrated male calves were used and randomly allotted to one of two replicates of these treatments: non-supplemented control (C); everyday restricted supplementation (E); restricted self-fed supplementation delivered two times a week (RSF); ad libitum self-fed (ASF). Exp A registered lowest ADG for C (0.155 kg an-1 day-1), similar ADG between E and RSF (0.623 kg an-1 day-1 on average) and highest for ASF (1.135 kg an-1 day-1) (p 0.05) between treatments for Exp A, even though ASF presented a 50% higher SFE (9.4) than RSF (6.2) and E (6.1). 91. Incidencia de variables biológicas y edáficas en el establecimiento de mezclas forrajeras

Abstract: With the aim of evaluating the incidence of biological and edaphic factors on the establishment of forage mixtures, a trial was set consisting in 180 sites in the states of Florida, Durazno and Lavalleja, Uruguay. The percentage of establishment was measured 90 days after seeding through the percentage of emergency, in three types of mixtures: a) perennial grass and legumes; b) perennial grass and legumes, and annual ryegrass; c) perennial grass and legumes, and wheat. Biological (predecessor crop, predecessor crop stubble, date of seeding, species sown) and edaphic (organic matter, pH, phosphorus) factors were quantified to determine their effects on the establishment period of the sowed seeds. This period was 29.2% for all the sites and species. Type of predecessor crop and species sowed (Festuca arundinacea Schreb., Dactylis glomerata L., Trifolium repens L., Trifolium pratense L., Lotus corniculatus L., Medicago sativa L., Lolium multiflorum Lam., Triticum aestivum L.) in the mixtures were determinant in the establishment percentage of the mixtures (perennial grass and legumes). Annual grasses reached the highest establishment percentage (50%) but supressed perennial grasses. Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv., was the best predecessor crop allowing an establishment of 40% in a mixture of perennial grass and legumes. On the other hand, Lotus corniculatus achieved the lowest establishment (14%). A negative correlation was found between legume establishment and a pH lower than 5.9., Con el objetivo de evaluar la incidencia de factores biológicos y edáficos en el establecimiento de mezclas forrajeras, se efectuó un experimento que abarcó 180 sitios en los departamentos de Florida, Durazno y Lavalleja, Uruguay. El porcentaje establecimiento fue medido a los 90 días de la siembra en tres tipos de mezclas: a) gramíneas y leguminosas perennes; b) gramíneas y leguminosas perennes, y raigrás anual; c) gramíneas y leguminosas perennes, y trigo. Fueron cuantificados distintos factores biológicos (tipo de rastrojo, fecha de siembra, especies sembradas) y edáficos (materia orgánica, pH y fósforo), para determinar las causas que afectaron el establecimiento de las semillas sembradas. El establecimiento promedio para todos los sitios y especies fue de 29,2%. El cultivo antecesor y el tipo especie sembrada en la mezcla (Festuca arundinacea Schreb., Dactylis glomerata L., Trifolium repens L., Trifolium pratense L,, Lotus corniculatus L., Medicago sativa L., Lolium multiflorum Lam., Triticum aestivum L.) fueron determinantes en el porcentaje de establecimiento de las mezclas. Las gramíneas anuales fueron las de mayor establecimiento (50%) pero deprimieron a las especies perennes. Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv., fue el antecesor más apto (40%) para el establecimiento de las gramíneas perennes y leguminosas. Por el contrario, Lotus corniculatus alcanzó el menor establecimiento (14%). Asimismo, se encontró una correlación negativa entre el establecimiento de leguminosas y nivel de pH menores a 5,9.

Abstract: Resumen: El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar el efecto antiparasitario de Plantago lanceolata (Llantén) frente a Lolium multiflorum (Raigrás anual). Se utilizaron 40 corderos Merino Australiano de 7 meses, clínicamente sanos y castrados. Dos grupos tomados al azar de 20 animales fueron asignados, después de ser dosificados con un antihelmíntico de amplio espectro, a 1 hectárea de Plantago lanceolata cv. Tonic y a 1 hectárea de Lolium multiflorum cv. Pronto, las que se fraccionaron en tres parcelas de 0,33 hectárea cada una y se manejaron con 14 días de ocupación y 28 días de descanso. La disponibilidad inicial de forraje fue de 1380 kg/ha MS para Llantén y 1441 kg/ha MS para Raigrás. La evolución de la infección parasitaria y el peso vivo se realizó cada 14 días y se estudiaron mediante análisis de varianza y diferencias de medias. Los géneros parasitarios se evaluaron cada 28 días y el hematocrito se determinó en ocasión del quinto muestreo. Ambos grupos mantuvieron niveles parasitarios leves y culminaron con iguales cargas parasitarias. Los dos grupos de animales ganaron peso durante todo el experimento con excepción del segundo y noveno muestreo. No se observaron diferencias estadísticas en ninguno de los muestreos. Los géneros predominantes fueron Haemonchus spp. y Trichostrongylus spp., y en menor proporción Ostertagia spp., Cooperia spp. y Oesophagostomum spp. En todos los casos se determinaron valores normales de hematocrito y una correlación negativa con el HPG. Se concluye que corderos con niveles de parasitosis leves son capaces de realizar buenas ganancias de peso vivo en pasturas con altos niveles nutritivos y que Plantago lanceolata es capaz de generar adecuada productividad animal. No logró ser demostrado que los taninos condensados hayan actuado como controladores de la parasitosis. Summary: The objective of the present work was to evaluate the antiparasitic effect of Plantago lanceolata (llantén) against Lolium multiflorum (annual rye grass). Forty healthy and castrated 7 months old Merino lambs were used. Were assigned randomly, after being drenched with a broad spectrum antiparasitic drug, in two groups of 20 lambs each to one Hectarea (ha) of Plantago lanceolata cv. Tonic and one ha of Lolium multiflorum cv. Pronto, which were divided into 3 paddocks of 0,33 ha each, and were managed in periods of 14 days on 28 days off the paddocks. Initial forage availability was 1380 kg/ha DM for llantén and 1441 kg/ha DM for rye grass. Evolution of parasite load and animal live weight every 14 days were evaluated, and by variance analysis and mean differences studied. Parasitic genes were evaluated each 28 days and hematocrit determined at the fifth sampling. Both groups maintained low parasitic levels and finished the trial with similar loads. The animals gained weight along the experiment but the second and ninth sampling. No statistical differences were observed in all samplings. Haemonchus spp. and Trichostrongylus spp. prevailed, being Ostertagia spp., Cooperia spp. and Oesophagostomun spp. less important. Normal values for hematocrit and a negative correlation with eggs counts were found. It has been concluded that lambs with slight levels of parasite loads are capable of achieve good live weight gains on pastures with high nutritive levels, and that Plantago lanceolata is suitable for generating a good animal productivity. It could not be demonstrated that condensed tannins had acted on parasitic control.

93. Grazing Intensity Controls the Seasonal Utilization of Functionally Diverse Patches by Mediating Herbivore Selectivity

Abstract: Understanding the mechanistic link between plant functional traits and foraging patterns across seasons and grazing intensities is crucial for implementing sustainable grazing systems and predicting ecological successions. We assessed the interaction effects of grazing intensity, season, and leaf functional traits on herbivore grazing patterns in a native grassland composed of functionally diverse patches in four 10–14 ha paddocks managed under lenient or moderate grazing intensities. Seasonal botanical composition was estimated in permanent 20 × 20 cm patches. Defoliation events of species in patches were recorded every 7–10 d, four times during summer-autumn, and five times during winter and spring. Leaf dry matter content, specific area, tensile strength, and width of dominant grass species were measured seasonally, and species were allocated to functional groups. The proportion of total defoliation events occurring in each functional group and their selectivity index were estimated for each period and season. We tested the relationship between trait community weighted mean in the pasture and that grazed by cattle for each quadrant and period within seasons. Cows focused grazing on resource-acquisitive strategy species with wider and more tender leaves during summer-autumn under both grazing intensities. As herbage mass and accumulation decreased during winter, cows shifted their foraging strategy toward shorter patches and previously rejected, tougher-thinner leaves and resource-conservative strategy species stockpiled from summer-autumn, not overgrazing the resource-acquisitive species. However, this general pattern was modulated by grazing intensity; cows grazed taller patches and more tender and wider-leaved species under lenient than moderate grazing intensity. Thus, the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of desired and rejected stockpiled patches of different functional groups was managed by integrating seasonality, grazing intensity, and leaf functional traits. Therefore, the general principle of foraging selectivity toward desired species can be altered by management practices and inherent species attributes, maintaining communities of species of different ecosystem functions in equilibrium.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION We investigated whether apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) could better identify patients with severe vessel damage than HDL-cholesterol in a population with recent acute myocardial infarction (AMI). METHODS One hundred and forty-one male patients (mean age: 54.3 +/- 7.3 years) who had undergone coronary angiography within 3 weeks of an AMI were studied. Coronary angiography data were evaluated both anatomically (as single, double or multivessel disease) and by means of the Gensini score. The main lipid parameters were evaluated on admission to the Coronary Care Unit. RESULTS ApoA1 and the ApoA1/ApoB ratio (A1/B) mean values were significantly (P 18), there was a statistically significant difference for ApoA1 (P < 0.01), HDL-cholesterol and A1/B (P < 0.05): only this latter was able to discriminate between the two groups. The mean ApoA1 and A1/B (P < 0.01), Gensini score (P < 0.001) and total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol (P < 0.05) values of patients in the single-vessel disease group differ from those both of double- and multivessel disease groups. A1/B is also able to discriminate between single- and double-vessel disease. DISCUSSION Our results confirm that ApoA1 and ApoA1/ApoB ratio are better than HDL-cholesterol in assessing the severity of coronary damage.

Abstract: Consumption of fast food and street food is increasingly common among Vietnamese, particularly in large cities. The high daily demand for these convenient food services, together with a poor management system, has raised concerns about food hygiene and safety (FHS). This study aimed to examine the FHS knowledge and practices of food processors and sellers in food facilities in Hanoi, Vietnam, and to identify their associated factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1,760 food processors and sellers in restaurants, fast food stores, food stalls, and street vendors in Hanoi in 2015. We assessed each participant's FHS knowledge using a self-report questionnaire and their FHS practices using a checklist. Tobit regression was used to determine potential factors associated with FHS knowledge and practices, including demographics, training experience, and frequency of health examination. Overall, we observed a lack of FHS knowledge among respondents across three domains, including standard requirements for food facilities (18%), food processing procedures (29%), and food poisoning prevention (11%). Only 25.9 and 38.1% of participants used caps and masks, respectively, and 12.8% of food processors reported direct hand contact with food. After adjusting for socioeconomic characteristics, these factors significantly predicted increased FHS knowledge and practice scores: (i) working at restaurants and food stalls, (ii) having FHS training, (iii) having had a physical examination, and (iv) having taken a stool test within the last year. These findings highlight the need of continuous training to improve FHS knowledge and practices among food processors and food sellers. Moreover, regular monitoring of food facilities, combined with medical examination of their staff, should be performed to ensure food safety.
