Purpose: To examine disease profile of tubercular uveitis (TBU) in Paediatric population. Methods: Among 945 patients of the retrospective multinational study by the Collaborative Ocular Tuberculosis Study (COTS)-1, 29 Paediatric patients diagnosed with TBU were analyzed. Results: Mean age of disease presentation was 12.8 (range 4–18 years), with predominance of males (n = 14/20; 70.0%) and Asian ethnicity (n = 25/29; 86.2%). Posterior uveitis (n = 14/28; 50%) was the most frequent uveitis phenotype, with choroidal involvement occurring in 64.7% (n = 11/17). Incidence of optic disc edema and macular edema was higher in children (n = 8/18; 44.4% and n = 5/18; 27.8%, respectively) than in adults (n = 160/942; 16.9% and n = 135/942; 14.3%, respectively). Comparison of optic disc edema between subgroups showed a significant difference (P =.006). All patients received oral corticosteroids, most of them with antitubercular therapy. Treatment failure developed in 4.8% (n = 1/21). Conclusions: Children have a more severe inflammatory response to the disease, and an intensive anti-inflammatory therapeutic regimen is required to achieve a positive treatment outcome. Purpose: To report the clinical findings, anatomical features, and treatment outcomes in subjects with ocular tuberculosis (OTB) at 24 months in the Collaborative Ocular Tuberculosis Study (COTS)-1. Methods: Of the 945 subjects included in COTS-1, those who completed a 24-month follow-up after completion of treatment were included. The main outcome measure was a number of patients with treatment failure (TF). Results: 228 subjects (120 males; mean age of 42.82 ± 14.73 years) were included. Most common phenotype of uveitis was posterior (n = 81; 35.53%), and panuveitis (n = 76; 33.33%). Fifty-two patients (22.81%) had TF. On univariable analysis, odds of high TF was observed with bilaterality (OR: 3.46, p =.003), vitreous haze (OR: 2.14, p =.018), and use of immunosuppressive therapies (OR: 5.45, p =.003). However, only bilaterality was significant in the multiple regression model (OR: 2.84; p =.02). Conclusions: Majority of subjects (>75%) achieved cure in the COTS-1 at 24-month follow-up. Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major infection that can affect the eye as first and sole presentation without features of systemic disease. Controversy exists regarding diagnosis and management of tubercular uveitis (TBU), further compounded by regional variations in disease expression. Purpose: Collaborative Ocular Tuberculosis Study (COTS)-1 aims to address knowledge deficits through collaboration amongst uveitis specialists across the globe by sharing the data of patients with TBU presented at participating centers from January 2004 to December 2014. Methods: Data collection was facilitated by a novel method of real-time encrypted web-based data entry allowing regular updates as new data and recommendations become available. Results: Information on clinical features, investigation findings, management, and treatment outcomes were reviewed to get an idea about real world scenario. Purpose: To contribute a global description of the spectrum of choroidal involvement in tubercular uveitis (TBU).Methods: Retrospective cohort study of TBU patients with choroidal involvement from 25 centers between January 2004 and December 2014. Medical records of patients with a minimum follow-up of 1 year were reviewed.Results: 245 patients were included. The phenotypic variations included serpiginous-like choroiditis (SLC) (46%), tuberculoma (13.5%), multifocal choroiditis (MFC) (9.4%), ampiginous choroiditis (9%), among others. 219 patients were treated with anti-tubercular therapy (ATT) (n = 219/245, 89.38%), 229 patients with steroids (n = 229/245, 93.47%) and 28 patients with immunosuppressive agents (n = 28/245, 11.42%). Treatment failure was noted in 38 patients (n = 38/245, 15.5%). Patients with SLC and ampiginous choroiditis appeared to have superior outcomes on survival analysis (p = 0.06).Conclusion: This study provides a comprehensive description of choroidal involvement in TBU. Post-fever retinitis (PFR) is an infectious or para-infectious uveitic entity caused by bacterial or viral agents and seen mainly in tropical countries. Systemic symptoms such as joint pain, skin rash are common during the febrile stage. On the basis of only clinical presentation, it is difficult to pin-point the exact etiology for PFR. Serological investigations, polymerase chain reaction, and knowledge of concurrent epidemics in the community may help to identify the etiological organism. Bacterial causes of PFR such as rickettsia and typhoid are treated with systemic antibiotics, with or without systemic steroid therapy, whereas PFR of viral causes such as chikungunya, dengue, West Nile virus, and Zika virus have no specific treatment and are managed with steroids. Nevertheless, many authors have advocated mere observation and the uveitis resolved with its natural course of the disease. Retinal vasculitis may occur as an isolated manifestation of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) relapse and precede central nervous involvement. Therefore, a high index of suspicion and repeated ocular and neurological evaluations are essential for early diagnosis and prompt appropriate treatment to save life and sight. Objectives: To investigate the changes over time in extraocular and ocular manifestations of Behçet's disease (BD) in Tunisian patients. Material and methods: Retrospective study of 246 patients divided into two groups: group 1 (147 patients examined from 1995 to 2005) and group 2 (99 patients examined from 2006 to 2017). Results: Active or scarred genital ulcers observed by physician at presentation were significantly less frequent in group 2 (47.2% vs. 29.6%; p = 0.007), as were articular involvement (50.3% vs. 34.7%; p = 0.016) and erythema nodosum (18.4% vs. 8.1%; p = 0.024). One hundred-seven patients (43.5%) developed ocular manifestations during the 23-year study period. Intermediate uveitis was significantly more frequent in group 2 than in group 1 (11.7% vs. 28.4%; p = 0.003), and posterior uveitis less frequent in group 2 than in group 1 (34.2% vs. 19.7%; p = 0.016). Patients from group 2 were more likely to have macular edema (19.8% vs. 45.6%; p = 0.001). However, better visual prognosis, with a lower rate of legal blindness, was noted in group 2. Conclusions: Changes over time included a decrease in the rate of articular involvement and cutaneous involvement. There was an increase in the rate of intermediate uveitis and a decrease in the rate of posterior uveitis over time. Purpose: To describe swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) findings in uveitic cystoid macular edema (CME).Methods: Prospective study of 36 eyes.Results: Cystoid black spaces were shown in the deep capillary plexus (DCP) in 36 eyes (100%) and in the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) in 6 eyes (16.7%). Grayish areas of capillary non perfusion/hypoperfusion were seen in 69.4% of eyes in the DCP (vs 25% in the SCP, p < .001). The foveal avascular zone was larger than in the control healthy eyes in the DCP (p < .001). Capillary density was lower than in the control group in the SCP (p = .001) and the DCP (p < .001). Of 11 eyes with resolved CME on OCT, 4 eyes showed complete recovery of both plexuses on OCTA. There was a persistence of areas of capillary rarefaction in 4 eyes, and of hypoperfusion/nonperfusion in 3 eyes.Conclusion: OCTA visualizes perifoveal microvascular changes in uveitic CME. Purpose: To report optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) findings in eyes with ocular sarcoidosis (OS) and to compare these findings with those of fluorescein angiography (FA). Methods: Observational, cross-sectional, case-control study. Patients presenting with OS involving the posterior segment were evaluated using FA, structural-OCT and OCT-A. OCT-angiograms of the superficial (SCP) and deep (DCP) capillary plexuses and choriocapillaris (CC) were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. Results: OCT-A seemed more sensitive than FA in detecting perifoveal capillary arcade disruptions, areas of hypoperfusion/non-perfusion and capillary abnormalities (p<0.05). Capillary hypoperfusion was more frequently detected in the DCP than in SCP, conversely capillary abnormalities were more often observed at the level of the SCP. Capillary vessel density values were significantly lower in eyes with OS than in healthy controls both at the level of DCP and CC (p<0.05). Purpose: To report the cases of two patients who presented with acute Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease and associated retinal pigment epithelium detachment (PED). Methods: 2 case reports. Case 1: A 22-year-old male patient complained of acute bilateral decrease in vision. Initial best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/63, OU. There was 1+ vitreous cells, OU, exudative retinal detachment (ERD) in the right eye (RE), and a macular deep yellow lesion suggestive of PED in the left eye (LE). Case 2: A 40-year-old female patient presented with bilateral vision blurring. BCVA was 20/40 in the RE and 20/32 in the LE. There was 1+ vitreous cells OU, bilateral optic disc swelling and retinal striae. Results: Multimodal imaging showed features of acute VKH disease with associated PED in the two patients. Purpose: To evaluate the clinical improvement in ocular symptoms and signs in patients suffering from Demodex anterior blepharitis after using a novel cleansing wipe impregnated with 2.5% terpinen-4-ol and 0.2% hyaluronic acid. Study design: This was an exploratory, multicenter, open, randomized, two-parallel group comparative study. Methods: Forty-eight patients with Demodex anterior blepharitis were randomly assigned to apply the sterile wipe T1172 (Blephademodex®), either once daily (n=24, Group 1) or twice daily (n=24, Group 2) for 29 days. Overall ocular discomfort and other individual symptoms were measured using a 0–10 numeric rating scale at Day 8 and Day 29. Ocular signs, including eyelid margin hyperemia and number of cylindrical dandruff, were examined at slit lamp. Overall treatment performance by investigator, patient satisfaction and tolerance were evaluated with questionnaires. Results: Overall ocular discomfort was significantly reduced from baseline (p<0.0001) in both groups at Day 8 (−3.6±0.3 in Group 1 and −4.0±0.4 in Group 2) and Day 29 (−5.7±0.4 and −6.8±0.7, respectively), with no difference between groups (D8: p=0.718; D29: p=0.505). Each ocular symptom associated with Demodex blepharitis was improved in both groups. Eyelid margin hyperemia was significantly reduced at Day 8 (−0.7±0.7; p<0.001) and Day 29 (−1.1±0.7; p<0.0001) in Group 1. Similar results were observed in Group 2 (Day 8: p<0.001; Day 29: p<0.0001). Total disappearance of cylindrical dandruff was reported in 30.4% of patients in Group 1 and 43.5% in Group 2. Improvements in other ocular signs were observed in both groups. The product was well tolerated. All patients were satisfied or very satisfied and would continue using it. Conclusion: Daily eyelid hygiene using this cleansing wipe impregnated with 2.5% terpinen-4-ol and 0.2% hyaluronic acid during a 4-week period led to a rapid and marked reduction in ocular symptoms and signs associated with Demodex anterior blepharitis and was well tolerated. Purpose: To analyze the role of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of ocular fluids in management of tubercular (TB) anterior, intermediate, posterior, and panuveitis. Methods: In Collaborative Ocular Tuberculosis Study (COTS)-1 (25 centers, n = 962), patients with TB-related uveitis were included. 59 patients undergoing PCR of intraocular fluids (18 females; 53 Asian Indians) were included. Results: 59 (6.13%) of COTS-1 underwent PCR analysis. PCR was positive for Mycobacterium TB in 33 patients (23 males; all Asian Indians). 26 patients were PCR negative (18 males). Eight patients with negative PCR had systemic TB. Anti-TB therapy was given in 18 negative and 31 PCR cases. At 1-year follow-up, five patients with positive PCR (15.15%) and three with negative PCR (11.54%) had persistence/worsening of inflammation. Conclusions: Data from COTS-1 suggest that PCR is not commonly done for diagnosing intraocular TB and positive/negative results may not influence management or treatment outcomes in the real world scenario. Abstract Diabetic retinopathy is a major cause of reduced visual acuity and acquired blindness. The aim of this work was to analyze functional and vascular changes in diabetic Meriones shawi (M.sh) an animal model of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. The animals were divided into four groups. Two groups were fed a high fat diet (HFD) for 3 and 7 months, two other groups served as age-matched controls. Retinal function was assessed using full field electroretinogram (Ff-ERG). Retinal thickness and vasculature were examined by optical coherence tomography, eye fundus and fluorescein angiography. Immunohistochemistry was used to examine key proteins of glutamate metabolism and synaptic transmission. Diabetic animals exhibited significantly delayed scotopic and photopic ERG responses and decreases in scotopic and photopic a- and b-wave amplitudes at both time points. Furthermore, a decrease of the amplitude of the flicker response and variable changes in the scotopic and photopic oscillatory potentials was reported. A significant decrease in retinal thickness was observed. No evident change in the visual streak area and no sign of vascular abnormality was present; however, some exudates in the periphery were visible in 7 months diabetic animals. Imunohistochemistry detected a decrease in the expression of glutamate synthetase, vesicular glutamate transporter 1 and synaptophysin proteins. Results indicate that a significant retinal dysfunction was present in the HFD induced diabetes involving both rod and cone pathways and this dysfunction correlate well with the morphological abnormalities reported previously. Furthermore, neurodegeneration and abnormalities in retinal function occur before vascular alterations would be detectable in diabetic M.sh. A 33-year-old patient was diagnosed with acute Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease and was prescribed prednisolone (1 mg/kg/day) and azathioprine (2.5 mg/kg/day). She mistakenly took an excessively high dose (4 mg/kg/day) of prednisolone for 14 days. The erroneous dose of corticosteroids was progressively corrected. Several weeks after initial presentation, the patient developed a polymerase chain reaction-proven bilateral cytomegalovirus retinitis, with extensive occlusive arteritis in the right eye. Systemic immunosuppressive therapy was temporarily discontinued and viral retinitis was successfully managed with systemic and intravitreal ganciclovir. Purpose: Type 2 diabetic retinopathy is the main cause of acquired blindness in adults. The aim of this work was to examine the retinal function of the sand rat Psammomys obesus as an animal model of diet-induced type 2 diabetes when subjected to a hypercaloric regimen. Materials and methods: Hyperglycemia was induced in Psammomys obesus by high caloric diet (4 kcal/g). The visual function of control (n = 7) and diabetic (n = 7) adult rodents were followed up during 28 consecutive weeks with full-field electroretinogram(ERG) recordings evoked to flashes of white light according to the standard protocol of the International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision protocol (ISCEV). Results: Twenty-eight weeks following the induction of diabetes, results revealed significantly reduced and delayed photopic and scotopic ERG responses in diabetic rats compared to control rats. More specifically, we noted a significant decrease in the amplitude of the dark-adapted 0.01ERG (62%), a- and b-wave amplitudes of the dark-adapted 3.0 ERG (33.6%, 55.1%) and the four major oscillatory potentials components (OP1-OP4) (39.0%, 75.2%, 54.8% and 53.7% respectively). In photopic conditions, diabetic rats showed a significant decrease in a- and b-wave (30.4%, 43.4%), photopic negative response (55.3%), 30 Hz flicker (63.7%), OP1-OP4(51.6%, 61.8%, 68.3% and 47.5% respectively) and S-cone (34.7%). Significantly delayed implicit times were observed for all ERG components in the diabetic animals. Results obtained are comparable to those characterizing the retinal function of patients affected with advanced stage of diabetic retinopathy. Conclusion: Psammomys obesus is a useful translational model to study the pathophysiology of diabetic retinopathy in order to explore new therapeutic avenues in human patients. Background: The purpose of this single case report was to report the use of anterior segment optical coherence tomography for the diagnosis and management of a retained vegetal intraocular foreign body. Results: A 23-year-old otherwise healthy male presented with a progressive vision loss in the right eye (RE). He reported a mild ocular trauma with a tree leaf 1 year ago followed by recurrent episodes of redness and pain in the RE that partially resolved after a self-medication with topical steroids. Visual acuity of the RE was limited to light perception. Slit-lamp examination of the RE showed an iris granuloma with overlying exudate and associated anterior chamber inflammatory reaction. Film X-rays, contact B-scan ultrasonography, and CT scan showed no abnormalities. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography revealed an enclaved iris foreign body. The foreign body was removed after a short course of local antibio-corticosteroid therapy. This was followed 2 months later by cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation, with subsequent improvement of visual acuity to 20/40. Conclusions: A missed intraocular foreign body can lead to sight-threatening complications. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography may be useful for detecting non-clinically evident intraocular foreign body involving the anterior segment masquerading as chronic anterior uveitis. Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of gevokizumab for the treatment of Behçet's disease uveitis in a prospective, open-label, randomized phase 2 trial.Methods: Behçet's disease patients with new acute ocular exacerbation or at risk of exacerbation received 30 or 60 mg gevokizumab every 4 weeks intravenously or subcutaneously, on top of a stable regimen of immunosuppressives and corticosteroids (≤20 mg/day equivalent prednisolone). Patients withdrew in cases of ocular exacerbation.Results: A total of 21 patients were included (17 acute and 4 at-risk; mean duration of uveitis 45.6 ± 37.4 months). There were no serious adverse events related to gevokizumab. Recorded adverse events were mostly associated with exacerbation of uveitis or its complications. Response was evaluated for 14 acute patients and all showed rapid control of acute ocular exacerbation, mostly within 1 week, without any increase in corticosteroid dosage.Conclusions: Gevokizumab was well tolerated and rapidly controlled acute ocular exacerbations of Behçet's disease uveitis without the need for high-dose corticosteroid. Purpose: To compare the retinal function of a diurnal murid rodent,Psammomys obesus, with that of Wistar albino rat and human subjects. Materials and methods: AdultPsammomys obesuswere captured and transferred to the animal facilities where they were maintained at 25°C with standard light/dark cycles and natural halophilic plants, rich in water and mineral salts. Standard full-field photopic and scotopic electroretinograms were obtained. Results: The right eye of all animals displayed well detectable and reproducible scotopic and photopic electroretinogram (ERG) responses. Results were compared with those obtained from human subjects and Wistar rats. ERG measurement showed that the amplitudes of scotopic responses inPsammomys obesusare quite similar to those of human subjects. The amplitude of the photopic a-wave was comparable to that of humans and six times higher than that of the albino rat. The amplitudes of photopic b-wave, photopic oscillatory potentials (OPs), and 30 Hz flicker were all markedly larger inPsammomys obesuscompared to those obtained from human subjects and Wistar rats. Furthermore, like the human photopic ERG, the photopic ERG ofPsammomys obesusalso includes prominent post b-wave components (i.e. i- and d-waves) while the ERG of Wistar rats does not. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the retinal function ofPsammomys obesus, especially the cone-mediated function, shares several features with that of human subjects. We believe thatPsammomys obesusrepresents an interesting alternative to study the structure and function of the normal and diseased retina in a human-like rodent model of retinal function. Background: Varicella is a common infectious disease primarily of childhood that is usually benign and self-limited. It is, however, increasingly seen in adults who are at a higher risk of severe infection. Ocular complications of varicella are relatively uncommon and have been rarely described in adults. We describe herein five adults who developed ocular involvement in association with primary varicella-zoster virus infection. Findings: Ocular manifestations included acute anterior uveitis in four eyes, with associated stromal keratitis in one of them, epithelial ulcerative keratitis in the two eyes of one patient, and acute retinal necrosis in one eye. One patient with acute anterior uveitis was treated with topical steroids and cycloplegic agents. The four other patients received topical or systemic antiviral drugs, with subsequent resolution of acute ocular inflammatory disease. Purpose: To describe clinical characteristics and etiological profile of uveitis presenting for the first time in the elderly and explain its therapeutic challenges and evolutive particularities. Methods: Retrospective review of 170 patients in the department of ophthalmology in Fattouma Bourguiba University Hospital, in the period between January 2007 and January 2021. Results: During the study, 221 eyes of 170 patients were affected by uveitis. The mean age was 59.32 ± 7.32 years and a female gender predominance was registered (61.1% were women). The most prevalent anatomical pattern was anterior uveitis (45/170; 26.4%) followed by panuveitis (33.5%). According to laterality, bilateral involvement (53.6%) was more registered. The majority of cases were chronic (67.2%), acute cases occurred in 31.7%, the rest of the cases (10%) were recurrent. Idiopathic uveitis was diagnosed in 21 cases (12.3%). A definitive or presumed specific aetiology was determined in most of our cases (87.7%), the most common specific aetiology in our case series was sarcoidosis (15.2%) followed by ocular Tuberculosis (12.9%), Herpes simplex virus anterior uveitis (10.5%), and chronic recurrent Vogt‐Koyanagi‐Harada disease (9.4%). An Infectious aetiology was established in 39.4% of the cases and noninfectious systemic autoimmune causes accounted for 24.1%. 53 eyes (16.2%) of 33 patients (19.4%) presented complications during the studied period. The most common ocular complication was uveitic cataract occurring in 38% of the cases. Conclusions: Epidemiological characteristics of uveitis in the elderly population is different from other age categories, which should influence the diagnostic approach in these patients. Purpose: To describe clinical features and multimodal imaging findings in primary vitreoretinal lymphoma (PVRL). Methods: Medical records and imaging findings of 4 patients (4 eyes) diagnosed with PVRL were retrospectively reviewed. Detailed ophthalmic examination, fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence (FAF), fluorescein angiography (FA), optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) were analysed in all patients. All patients underwent vitreous biopsy for diagnosis confirmation. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed in all cases. Results: There were 2 women and 2 male patients with a mean age of 68.75 years. Visual blurring was the presenting symptom in all patients (100%). Clinical findings at presentation included vitritis in 4 eyes (100%), vitreous clumps in 2 eyes (50%), subretinal deposits in 3 eyes (75%) and exudative retinal detachment in one eye (25%). FAF showed granular hyperautofluorescence and hypoautofluorescence lesions in 3 eyes (75%) and blockage by mass lesion was seen in 1 eye. The most common pattern on FA was hypofluorescent lesions with a "leopard spot" appearance (75%). OCT revealed hyperreflective sub retinal lesions between retinal pigment epithelium and Bruch's membrane with an undulating shape (seasick sign) in 3 eyes (75%) and epiretinal membrane in one eye. OCTA showed areas of decreased signal on choriocapillaris slab in 2 eyes (50%). MRI of the globes and brain showed no abnormality in all cases. Vitreous cytology revealed atypical mononuclear cells consisting with the diagnosis of PVRL in all cases. The patients were referred to oncology unit. Purpose: To describe the demographics and clinical characteristics of anterior scleritis associated with uveitis in a referral center in Tunisia. Methods: The charts of twenty patients (20 eyes) diagnosed with sclero‐uveitis at Fattouma Bourguiba University Hospital, Monastir, Tunisia, presented between January 2015 and April 2022, were retrospectively reviewed. Detailed ophthalmic examination and fundus photography were performed in all patients. Mean follow‐up period was 28.4 months. Patients with keratitis or posterior scleritis were excluded. Results: There were eight women and 12 males patients with a mean age of 34.8 years. All patients presented with ocular pain. Mean initial best‐corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/80 (range, 20/2000–20/25).There was an associated anterior uveitis in 80% of cases and panuveitis in 20%. Clinical findings at presentation included nodular scleritis in five eyes (25%) and scleromalacia perforans in four eyes (20%). Idiopathic sclero‐uveitis accounted for almost 55%. Identified causes of sclerouveitis included rheumatoid arthritis in four eyes (20%), tuberculosis in three eyes (15%), granulomatosis with polyangiitis in two eyes (10%), sarcoidosis in one eye (5%) and then one case after mRNA 1273 vaccine (5%). Ocular complications included pupillary seclusion in 25% of cases and vision loss in 10% of patients. Mean final BCVA was 20/100 (range, 20/4000–20/32). Treatment modalities of non‐infectious scleritis included indomethacine in 14 patients (82.3%), systemic corticosteroid in seven patients (41.1%) and immunosuppressant or biological agent in five patients (29.4%). Conclusions: Our results provide useful information about the patterns and etiologies of sclerouveitis. The leading causes of sclerouveitis include mainly rheumatoid arthritis and tuberculosis. Purpose: To describe a case of intermediate uveitis and optic neuritis associated with Cogan's syndrome. Methods: A case report. Results: A 29‐year‐old white Caucasian female was referred to our department for decreased vision in her left eye (LE). Previous medical history revealed relapsing intermediate uveitis and optic neuritis in the LE for 5 years and a sensio‐neural hearing loss a year earlier. On presentation, her ophthalmological examination revealed best corrected visual acuity in the LE of 6/60 with a relative afferent pupillary defect. Slit lamp examination revealed a clear cornea, 0.5+ cells in the anterior chamber and 3+ cells in the vitreous. Fundus examination showed an optic disc atrophy. Examination of the right eye was unremarkable. Examination by the internist revealed palmar erythematous lesions. Laboratory work‐up was negative for infectious diseases. Testing for antinuclear antibodies, antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies and rheumatoid factor were negative. The diagnosis of atypical Cogan's syndrome was made based on the association of atypical ophthalmological manifestations and typical audio‐vestibular manifestations. Purpose: To report a case of Vogt‐Koyanagi‐Harada (VKH) disease following a serology‐confirmed bartonella henselae retinitis. Methods: A single case report. Results: A 41‐year‐old female patient presented with a central scotoma in her right eye (RE). Fundoscopic examination showed a focal retinitis with a macular star in the RE. Work‐up revealed positive bartonellosis serology. The patient was treated with oral azithromycine and oral steroids during 4 weeks with subsequent healing of the retinitis lesion. Three months after initial presentation, the patient complained of loss of vision in both eyes. Ophthalmological examination showed a best‐corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 20/200 on both eyes, with a bilateral granulomatous panuveitis with bilateral multifocal exudative retinal detachment. Results of multimodal imaging were consistent with the diagnosis of acute VKH disease. Given the history of positive bartonellosis serology, the patient was treated with doxycycline (200 mg/day) for 6 weeks in association with intravenous methylprednisolone for 5 days followed by oral steroids and progressive tapering. At three‐month follow‐up, BCVA improved to 20/20 in both eyes associated with resolution of clinical and structural OCT changes. Conclusions: Our case suggests that bartonella henselae infection might be a non‐previously reported infectious trigger of VKH disease in genetically predisposed patients. Purpose: To compare clinical profile and visual outcomes of occlusive versus non‐occlusive retinal vasculitis (RV). Methods: A retrospective comparative study. Results: 284 patients were enrolled, including 124 patients with occlusive RV (ORV) and 160 patients with nonocclusive RV (NORV). Patients with ORV were older (p ≤ 10‐3), predominantly male (p ≤ 10‐3), with less bilateral involvement (31.5% vs. 53.4%; p ≤ 10‐3). Infectious RV was more frequently diagnosed in the ORV group than in the NORV group (48.8% vs. 32.9%, p = 0.006). Behçet disease and ocular tuberculosis were the leading causes of ORV. Idiopathic RV, Behçet disease, and sarcoidosis were the most common causes of NORV. Independent predictive factors of poor visual outcome were worse baseline visual acuity in both groups (p = 0.006 and p ≤ 10‐3, respectively), and retinal haemorrhages (p = 0.048) and optic atrophy (p = 0.040) in the ORV group. Purpose: To describe restoration of outer retinal layers on Swept‐Source OCT (SS OCT) in Vogt Koyanagi Harada (VKH) disease over a year after the disease onset. Methods: Prospective longitudinal study carried out at the department of Ophthalmology of Fattouma Bourguiba University Hospital of Monastir. Twenty‐one patients (42 eyes) were followed‐up for 12 months after the disease onset. The patients were included at the acute phase and subsequently treated. Sequential SS OCT changes were assessed. Results: Structural SS OCT changes occurred in 24 eyes (57.1%) on month 3 (M3), in 23 eyes (54.8%) on month 6 (M6), and in 19 eyes (45.2%) on month 12 (M12). They included external nuclear layer atrophy (14.3% on M3; 11.9% on M6; and 9.5% on M12); ellipsoid zone disruption (40.5% on M3; 38.1% on M6; and 33.3% on M12); interdigitation zone disruption (42.9% on M3; 40.5% on M6; and 33.3% on M12); and multifocal retinal pigment epithelium thickening (50% on M3; 45.2% on M6; and 31% on M12). No significant association between final visual acuity and external retinal layers alterations at any stage of the study was found. Stepwise analysis showed that the presence of serous retinal detachment at presentation was an independent factor for structural SS OCT changes on M3. Conclusions: After initial onset, SS OCT shows thinning of the outer nuclear layer, disruption of the ellipsoid and interdigitation zones, and multifocal retinal pigment epithelium thickening. Purpose: To compare clinical findings and visual outcomes of vitreous haemorrhage (VH) associated with inflammatory ocular conditions between children and adults patients. Methods: Retrospective study including 46 patients (56 eyes) diagnosed with VH associated with inflammatory ocular conditions in Department of ophthalmology, Fattouma Bourguiba university hospital, Tunisia. Demographics, clinical findings, etiologies, treatment modalities, and visual outcomes were compared between adults and children. Mean follow‐up period was 18 months. Results: There were 10 children (12 eyes) and 36 adults (44 eyes) patients. Mean age was 9.5 years in the children group (six males and four females) and 35 years in the adult group (26 males and 10 females). Comparative study showed that VH in the paediatric group was associated with a significantly lower presenting visual acuity, more frequently vitritis and fern‐like capillaritis, whereas VH in the adult group were more associated with vascular sheathing and retinal haemorrhages. The main mechanism of bleeding was inflammatory optic disc neovessels (NV) in the children group (66.6%, p ≤ 0.001) and ischemic posterior segment NV in the adult group (81.8%, p ≤ 0.001). Idiopathic intermediate uveitis (40%) was the leading cause of VH in the children group. However, tuberculosis (41.7%), Behçet's (19.4%) disease and sarcoidosis (11.1%) were the most common etiologies in the adult group. The mean final visual acuity was significantly higher in the paediatric group (20/25) than the adult group (20/50) (p = 0.045). Purpose: To describe optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) findings in eyes with active and scarred toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis. Methods: OCTA scans in active (25 eyes) and scarred (17 eyes) retinochoroiditis were retrospectively reviewed at Fattouma Bourguiba University Hospital, Monastir, Tunisia. Results: In active lesions, OCTA findings included a non‐detectable flow signal area in retinal vascular plexuses and choriocapillaris in all 25 eyes (100%), an abnormal intraretinal vascular process in two eyes (8%), and an associated area of retinal flow deficit secondary to branch retinal artery occlusion in one eye (4%). In scarred lesions, OCTA findings included a flow deficit area in retinal vascular plexuses and choriocapillaris in all 17 eyes (100%), a visibility of larger deeper choroidal vessels at the level of choriocapillaris in nine eyes (53%), and a well‐defined intraretinal vascular network in one eye (5.9%). Peripapillary scars were associated on OCTA with wedge‐shaped loss of radial peripapillary capillaries with corresponding localized retinal nerve fibre layer defect and visual field loss. The purpose of this study was to determine final diagnosis of patients referred with a diagnosis of neuroretinitis. A retrospective study of 40 patients with optic disc oedema with macular star (ODOMS) referred with a diagnosis of neuroretinitis was conducted. The final diagnosis was neuroretinitis in 26 patients (65%), with most of these patients (96.1%) having unilateral involvement. Main underlying aetiologies included cat scratch disease (30.8%), rickettsiosis (19.2%), and idiopathic neuroretinitis (23.1%). The remaining 14 patients (35%) had ODOMS that had been mistaken for neuroretinitis. Of these patients, 42.8% were found to have a previously unknown malignant systemic hypertension in association with bilateral ODOMS. Neuroretinitis, usually unilateral, should be differentiated from other causes of unilateral or most often bilateral ODOMS that may masquerade as neuroretinitis, mainly malignant systemic hypertension. Purpose: To describe the pattern of acute retinal necrosis (ARN) syndrome in a referral center in Tunisia.Methods: Retrospective review of the charts of 12 patients (12 eyes).Results: Necrotizing retinitis involved >50% of the retina in 33.3% of eyes. Polymerase chain reaction on aqueous humor sample identified herpes simplex virus-1 in 4 eyes (33.3%) and varicella zoster virus in 3 eyes (25%), and was negative in 5 eyes (41.7%). All patients received intravenous acyclovir, followed by oral antivirals. Follow-up ranged from 6 to 16 months. Retinal detachment (RD) occurred in 3 eyes (25%), but no patient developed bilateral ARN. Final visual acuity was 20/200 or worse in 7 eyes (58.3%). Delay in diagnosis (p = 0.015), macular involvement (p = 0.045), development of RD (p = 0.018), and 25-50% of retinal involvement (p = 0.045) were associated with a worse visual outcome.Conclusion: ARN carries poor visual prognosis in Tunisia. Purpose: Ocular tuberculosis is an extrapulmonary tuberculous condition and has variable manifestations. The purpose of this review is to describe the clinical manifestations of ocular tuberculosis affecting the anterior and posterior segments of the eye in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients. Methods: Review of literature using Pubmed database. Results: Mycobacterium tuberculosis may lead to formation of conjunctival granuloma, nodular scleritis, and interstitial keratitis. Lacrimal gland and orbital caseating granulomas are rare but may occur. The intraocular structures are also a target of insult by M. tuberculosis and may cause anterior granulomatous uveitis, anterior and posterior synechiae, secondary glaucoma, and cataract. The bacillus may involve the ciliary body, resulting in the formation of a localized caseating granuloma. Posterior segment manifestations include vitritis, retinal vasculitis, optic neuritis, serpiginous-like choroiditis, choroidal tubercules, subretinal neovascularization, and, rarely, endophthalmitis. Conclusions: The recognition of clinical signs of ocular tuberculosis is of utmost importance as it can provide clinical pathway toward tailored investigations and decision making for initiating anti-tuberculosis therapy. We report a case of a 52-year-old woman presented with atypical central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) that had been misdiagnosed as posterior uveitis and treated with systemic corticosteroids and immunosuppressive therapy, with subsequent severe chorioretinal damage. Diagnosis was straightened through multimodal imaging. Anatomical improvement was achieved after discontinuation of corticosteroids and intravitreal injection of bevacizumab. However, visual acuity remained severely impaired in one eye. Failure to differentiate atypical CSCR from inflammatory chorioretinal diseases may lead to severe and irreversible visual impairment. Purpose: To characterize and analyze ocular involvement associated with visual loss in a cohort of patients with rickettsial disease. Methods: Retrospective study of 16 eyes of 14 patients. Results: Mean initial visual acuity (VA) was 20/63 (range, 20/800-20/25). White retinal lesions infiltrating inner retina was the most common finding occurring in 14 eyes (87.5%). It was associated with a serous retinal detachment (SRD), accurately detectable by optical coherence tomography, in 11 eyes (78.6%). Other findings included optic neuropathy in 7 eyes (43.75%), cystoid macular edema in 1 eye (6.25%), branch retinal artery occlusion in 1 eye (6.25%), and choroidal neovascularization in 1 eye (6.25%). Thirteen patients were treated with a 2-week course of oral doxycycline 200 mg/day. Mean final VA was 20/40. Primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) is responsible for a significant proportion of childhood blindness in Tunisia. Early prevention based on genetic diagnosis is therefore required. This study sought to determine the frequency of CYP1B1 (cytochrome P450, family 1, subfamily B, polypeptide 1) mutations in 18 PCG patients, recruited from Central and Southern of Tunisia. Genomic DNA was extracted and the coding regions of CYP1B1 were analysed by direct sequencing. A phylogenetic network of CYP1B1 haplotypes was drawn using the median-joining algorithm. Sequence analysis revealed a 'tetra-allelic mutation' (two novel mutations, p.F231I and p.P437A in the homozygous state) in one patient. The healthy members of his family carried those variations on the same allele. Two previously described mutations p.G61E and c.535delG were also identified in the homozygous state in seven and two probands, respectively. Seven single-nucleotide polymorphisms were identified and used to generate haplotypes. Our results showed that the CYP1B1 mutations were present in 55% of Tunisian PCG patients' alleles. Haplotype analysis allowed us to define the proto-haplotype and to confirm historical migratory flows. Methods: Published articles and case reports on parasitic infections of external eye were reviewed and relevant information was collected. Results: Parasitic infections of the eye are rare. However, being more commonly seen in developing nations, they require active measures for screening, diagnosis, and therapy. Parasites of importance causing external ocular disease are protozoan parasites, such as Leishmania; metazoans, such as nematodes (roundworms), cestodes (tapeworms), and trematodes (flatworms); or ectoparasites, such as Phthirus pubis and Demodex. Purpose: To describe a systematic review of population-based prevalence studies of visual impairment (VI) and blindness worldwide over the past 32 years that informs the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors Study. Methods: A systematic review (Stage 1) of medical literature from 1 January 1980 to 31 January 2012 identified indexed articles containing data on incidence, prevalence and causes of blindness and VI. Only cross-sectional population-based representative studies were selected from which to extract data for a database of age- and sex-specific data of prevalence of four distance and one near vision loss categories (presenting and best-corrected). Unpublished data and data from studies using rapid assessment methodology were later added (Stage 2). Results: Stage 1 identified 14,908 references, of which 204 articles met the inclusion criteria. Stage 2 added unpublished data from 44 rapid assessment studies and four other surveys. This resulted in a final dataset of 252 articles of 243 studies, of which 238 (98%) reported distance vision loss categories. A total of 37 studies of the final dataset reported prevalence of mild VI and four reported near VI. Conclusion: We report a comprehensive systematic review of over 30 years of VI/blindness studies. While there has been an increase in population-based studies conducted in the 2000s compared to previous decades, there is limited information from certain regions (eg, Central Africa and Central and Eastern Europe, and the Caribbean and Latin America), and younger age groups, and minimal data regarding prevalence of near vision and mild distance VI. Behçet disease (BD) is a common, complex, and severely debilitating systemic vasculitis. Despite an increasing understanding of BD overall, there remain many critical questions to be addressed in terms of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of this condition. The opinions of uveitis experts related to these issues were recently surveyed and are summarized herein. The survey results revealed significant disparities between responders in terms of important concepts regarding the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of this important inflammatory eye disease. Purpose: To assess the 5-year visual outcome of intravitreal bevacizumab in inflammatory ocular neovascularization. Methods: Retrospective, multicenter, consecutive case series of eight patients with inflammatory ocular neovascularization refractory to standard therapy who were treated with intravitreal bevacizumab and followed for 5 years after first injection. The outcome measures included improvement of best-corrected visual acuity expressed as logarithm of minimum angle of resolution. Results: Mean best-corrected visual acuity significantly improved from 0.58 at baseline (6/23 or 20/76; standard deviation = 0.32) to 0.20 at final assessment (6/10 or 20/32; standard deviation = 0.25) (n = 8; P = 0.02), a gain of 3.8 lines (median: three injections; eight eyes; eight patients). No ocular or systemic complications from intravitreal bevacizumab were noted. Conclusion: At 5 years, intravitreal bevacizumab sustained significant visual improvement in ocular neovascularization due to a variety of inflammatory ocular diseases without major complications after a median of three injections. Posterior microphthalmia (PM) is a relatively rare autosomal recessive condition with normal anterior segment and small posterior segment resulting in high hyperopia and retinal folding. It is an uncommon subtype of microphthalmia that has been mostly reported to coexist with several other ophthalmic conditions and to occur in sporadic cases. The membrane-type frizzled-related protein ( MFRP) is the only gene so far reported implicated in autosomal recessive, non-syndromic and syndromic forms of PM. Here, we performed a clinical and genetic analysis using six consanguineous families ascertained from different regions of Tunisia and affected with non-syndromic PM that segregates as an autosomal recessive trait. To identify the disease-causing defect in these families, we first analysed MFRP gene, then some candidate genes ( CHX10, OPA1, MITF, SOX2, CRYBB1-3 and CRYBA4) and loci (MCOP1, NNO1 and NNO2) previously implicated in different forms of microphthalmia. After exclusion of these genes and loci, we performed a genome-wide scan using a high density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array 50 K in a large consanguineous pedigree. SNP genotyping revealed eight homozygous candidate regions on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 6, 15, 17 and 21. Linkage analysis with additional microsatellite markers only retained the 2q37.1 region with a maximum LOD score of 8.85 obtained for D2S2344 at θ = 0.00. Further investigations are compatible for linkage of four more families to this region with a refined critical interval of 2.35 Mb. The aim of this retrospective study is to assess the frequency of HLA-B27 and HLA-B51 in healthy subjects from the center of Tunisia and to investigate their usefulness in the diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and Behçet's disease (BD), respectively. Microlymphocytotoxicity test was used to perform serologic HLA typing in a group of 124 healthy volunteers and a group of 365 patients suffering from clinical manifestations of AS and/or BD. HLA-B27 was found in 3.2% of healthy subjects and in 42.9% of patients with AS ( P < 0.00006). HLA-B51 is, however, found in 16.1% of healthy subjects and in 30.0% of patients with BD ( P > 0.05). Unlike HLA-B51, which seems to be as frequent in Tunisian patients with BD as in healthy subjects, HLA-B27 is more frequent in patients with AS than in controls. Microspherophakia seems to be the most specific feature of the Weill–Marchesani Syndrome, which could be due to mutations within the ADAMTS10 gene. As the locus responsible for isolated microspherophakia is still unknown, because the reported cases are rare, we checked whether the ADAMTS10 gene is involved in isolated microspherophakia in a Tunisian family. A consanguineous family (MSP-M), including six family members and two patients, presented with decreased vision secondary to bilateral isolated microspherophakia. A linkage analysis was carried out using microsatellite markers flanking the ADAMTS10 candidate gene. In the MSP-M family, isolated microspherophakia is likely inherited as an autosomal-recessive disease. Using a homozygosity-mapping strategy, haplotypic analysis using four STRs showed an exclusion of linkage between the ADAMTS10 gene and the disease locus in this family. Purpose: To assess the role of bevacizumab in inflammatory ocular neovascularization. Design: Retrospective, multicenter, consecutive case series of inflammatory ocular neovascularization. Methods: Patients with inflammatory ocular neovascularization of varying causes for whom standard therapy failed were treated with intravitreal injection of bevacizumab. Main outcome measures included improvement of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) expressed in logarithm of minimum angle of resolution units, response of inflammatory ocular neovascularization by funduscopy and angiography, and decrease in central foveal thickness as measured by optical coherence tomography at the three-month follow-up. Results: At the three-month follow-up, 84 eyes of 79 patients had been treated with a mean of 1.3 injections (range, one to three). Thirty-four eyes showed juxtafoveal choroidal neovascularization (CNV), 34 eyes showed subfoveal CNV, eight eyes showed peripapillary CNV, and 11 eyes showed neovascularization of the disc (NVD) or neovascularization elsewhere (NVE). BCVA improved 2.4 lines from 0.68 (6/28 or 20/94) to 0.44 (6/17 or 20/55) (P < .001). BCVA improved by one to three lines in 34.5% of the eyes, by four to six lines in 16.7% of the eyes, and by more than six lines in 14.2% of the eyes. Function was unchanged in 23.8% of the eyes. BCVA worsened in 10.7% (zero to three lines in 7.1%, more than four lines in 3.6%). Central foveal thickness decreased from baseline 346 to 252 μm (P < .001). For CNV, 32 eyes (43.2%) had complete regression after the injection, 27 (36.5%) had partial regression, five (6.8%) had no response, and 10 eyes (13.5%) were not evaluated by the contributors. For NVD or NVE, seven eyes (63.6%) had complete regression of new vessels and four eyes (36.4%) had partial regression after the injection. Conclusions: Intravitreal bevacizumab led to short-term significant visual improvement and regression of inflammatory ocular neovascularization in a wide variety of inflammatory ocular diseases. In each patient, standardized clinical and biologic data were collected. An ophthalmologic examination searching particularly for multifocal chorioretinitis was performed.Results: Of 64 patients who presented primarily with meningitis and/or encephalitis, 36 had IgM antibodies against WNV. The WNV-infected patients tended to be older (median age of 54 years vs 46 years in WNV infection and control groups, respectively) and more frequently had diabetes (30% vs 7% in WNV infection and control groups, respectively; P = .03). Multifocal chorioretinitis was found in 75% of WNV-infected patients but in no patient in the control group (P = .001). Blood glucose and amylase levels were higher in WNV-infected patients, whereas serum sodium levels were lower. The cerebrospinal fluid leukocyte count and protein levels were significantly higher in WNV meningitis or encephalitis. Overall, multifocal chorioretinitis had 100% specificity and 73% sensitivity (88% when only patients with meningitis or encephalitis were analyzed) for the diagnosis of WNV. Multivariate analysis disclosed multifocal chorioretinitis as the only predictor of WNV infection (odds ratio, 62; 95% confidence interval, 6-700; P = .001).Conclusion: Multifocal chorioretinitis appears to be a specific marker of WNV infection, particularly in patients who present with meningoencephalitis. Purpose: To report 2 cases of branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) associated with Behççet disease (BD). Design: Small case series. Methods: Review of two patients'' charts, fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Results: The authors report two young patients, diagnosed with BD, who developed decreased vision secondary to BRAO for the first patient and cilioretinal artery occlusion associated with branch retinal vein occlusion for the second patient. In the two cases, artery occlusion was associated with active intraocular inflammation. Purpose: To describe a case of orbital sarcoidosis manifesting with enophthalmos. Methods: A 60-year-old woman presented with right enophthalmos. She had a palpable mass in her anterior orbit inferiorly. She underwent a complete ophthalmic evaluation, magnetic resonance imaging, and histopathologic examination. Results: A magnetic resonance imaging scan disclosed an orbital, extraconal mass, with displacement of the orbital floor. A biopsy specimen of the mass demonstrated a granulomatous inflammation without caseation necrosis. Workup revealed hilar lymphadenopathy, pleural nodule, and splenomegaly. The patient was treated with corticosteroids, with subsequent involution of the mass and disappearance of enophthalmos. Conclusion: Although orbital sarcoidosis usually manifests with proptosis or palpebral swelling, enophthalmos should be considered as ophthalmic manifestation of sarcoidosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Herein a case of a 35-year-old woman with a history of Behçet's disease, who presented with swelling and redness of her right eye with increasing pain, is reported. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed enlargement of the right lacrimal gland and contrast enhancement of the extraocular muscles. A diagnosis of orbital inflammation was made and the patient was treated with corticosteroids, with prompt resolution of symptoms and clinical signs. Background: White dot syndromes (WDS) are a group of idiopathic multifocal inflammatory conditions that can be recognized and distinguished by lesion morphology, other specific clinical features, imaging findings, and disease course. Our purpose is to describe an atypical case of WDS with choriocapillaris ischemia shown by multimodal imaging including swept-source OCT angiography (OCTA) in a 30-year-old woman with latent tuberculosis.Findings: At presentation, visual acuity in the left eye was 20/500. Clinical findings included macular granularity, diffuse outer retinal discoloration with satellite yellow-white dots, and disc margin blurring. Fluorescein angiography showed early confluent areas of choroidal hypofluorescence and late perifoveal punctate hyperfluorescence. There was choroidal hypofluorescence in a geographic configuration throughout the indocyanine green angiography sequence. OCTA showed confluent geographic areas of loss of signal in the choriocapillaris. Work-up revealed latent tuberculosis. The patient received corticosteroids and prophylactic anti-tubercular treatment. Nine months later, visual acuity had improved to 20/20, and there were some residual retinal pigment epithelium changes.Conclusion: Atypical WDS associated with choriocapillaris hypoperfusion may show features of multiple evanescent white dot syndrome and acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy melting together. Background: Acute multifocal retinitis is a rare condition that has been considered to be often idiopathic. The purpose of this study was to analyze clinical features and causes of acute multifocal retinitis.Results: This study is a retrospective review of the charts of 35 patients with acute multifocal retinitis. Patients with three or more retinal lesions in at least one eye, with at least one lesion of less than 500 μm in size were included. All patients had complete ophthalmological examination, fundus photography, and fluorescein angiography. Twelve patients (34.3%) had optical coherence tomography. An extensive work-up was performed including a detailed comprehensive medical history, examination by an internist and an infectious disease specialist, a chest X-ray, Mantoux test, and laboratory tests for syphilis, human immunodeficiency virus, Bartonella, and Rickettsia. Of the 35 patients, 25 (71.4%) had bilateral involvement and 10 (28.6%) had unilateral involvement (total number of eyes: 60). Mean best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/25 (range, 20/1000-20/20). Retinal lesions ranged from 3 to more than 20 in number in at least 1 eye, and from 150 to 1500 μm in size. Associated findings included mild anterior chamber inflammation in 5 eyes (8.3%), mild vitritis in 46 eyes (76.7%), optic disc swelling in 9 eyes (15%), macular star in 4 eyes (6.7%), exudative retinal detachment in 6 eyes (10%), and branch retinal artery occlusion in 6 eyes (10%). Acute multifocal retinitis was found to be caused by Rickettsia conorii infection in 20 patients (57.1%), Rickettsia typhi infection in 4 patients (11.4%), cat-scratch disease in 8 patients (22.9%), and syphilis in 1 patient (2.9%). It was idiopathic in two patients (5.7%). Retinal lesions resolved without scarring in 3 to 12 weeks in all but three eyes (5%), in which residual retinal pigment epithelial changes were noted.Conclusion: Rickettsial disease was the most common cause of acute multifocal retinitis. Other identified causes included cat-scratch disease and syphilis, and a very small subset of patients was diagnosed with idiopathic multifocal retinitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
