52. Monte Carlo Simulation to relate primary and final fragments mass and kinetic energy distribution from low energy fission of $^{234}U$

Abstract

The kinetic energy distribution as a function of mass of final fragments (m) from low energy fission of $^{234}U$, measured with the Lohengrin spectrometer by Belhafaf et al. presents a peak around m=108 and another around m = 122. The authors attribute the first peak to the evaporation of a large number of neutrons around the corresponding mass number; and the second peak to the distribution of the primary fragment kinetic energy. Nevertheless, the theoretical calculations related to primary distribution made by Faust et al. do not result in a peak around m = 122. In order to clarify this apparent controversy, we have made a numerical experiment in which the masses and the kinetic energy of final fragments are calculated, assuming an initial distribution of the kinetic energy without peaks on the standard deviation as function of fragment mass. As a result we obtain a pronounced peak on the standard deviation of the kinetic energy distribution around m = 109, a depletion from m = 121 to m = 129, and an small peak around m = 122, which is not as big as the measured by Belhafaf et al. Our simulation also reproduces the experimental results on the yield of the final mass, the average number of emitted neutrons as a function of the provisional mass (calculated from the values of the final kinetic energy of the complementary fragments) and the average value of fragment kinetic energy as a function of the final mass., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Journal of Physics G

Abstract

The mass and kinetic energy distribution of nuclear fragments from thermal neutron-induced fission of 235U have been studied using a Monte-Carlo simulation. Besides reproducing the pronounced broadening in the standard deviation of the kinetic energy at the final fragment mass number around m = 109, our simulation also produces a second broadening around m = 125. Abstract

The pharmaceutical cold chain (PCC) deals with specific logistics operational require-ments related to product quality, safety, and regulations that make the supply chain management process complex. Also, the pharma industry market growth increases the awareness, in terms of good's temperature monitoring and controlling, of the storage and transportation processes across the network. This study provides a novel approach to PCC, based on a systematic literature review with an extensive analysis of the main aspects that influence the supply chain processes. The major findings highlight the recently worldwide research progress on the PCC subjects related, the challenges involving the PCC and its associated technological advances based on three attributes (product characteristics, vehicle capabilities, and logistics service provider’s expertise) and, finally, the impact of technologies and its potential utilization to im-prove the decision-making process on integrated cold chain operations.

Abstract

A statistical method is developed to infer the typical density profiles of poor galaxy systems without resort to binning of data or assuming a given center to each system. The method is applied to the accordant redshift quartets in Hickson's compact groups (HCGs). The distribution of separations in these groups is consistent with a unique generalized modified Hubble surface density profile, with best-fit asymptotic slope beta = 1.4 and core radius R_c = 18 h^{-1} kpc, although a King profile (beta = 1) is also consistent with the data (with R_c = 6 h^{-1} kpc). These distributions are more concentrated than what has been previously determined for these groups. HCGs are unlikely to act as strong gravitational lenses, but analogous systems 5 to 10 times more distant should produce a non-negligible fraction of giant arcs., Comment: ApJL in press. 12 pages, incl. 1 table and 2 figures. Abstract

La violencia de género es un fenómeno social en crecimiento, se presenta de distintas formas en el hogar, la escuela y el ámbito laboral. Este artículo examina el impacto de la violencia de género de tipo psicológico y verbal, la intención de rotar e impacto en la mujer en el desempeño individual, de mujeres trabajadoras de los sectores agrícola e industrial en México. La investigación es cuantitativa no experimental, la muestra de 560 empleadas. Las relaciones entre constructos se probaron con modelos de mínimos cuadrados parciales. Los resultados indican que la intención de rotar e impacto en la mujer, afectan positivamente al desempeño; la violencia de género de tipo psicológica y verbal, lo afectan negativamente, pero por medio de variables mediadoras. El modelo explica de forma débil a la intención de abandono (0.067), la violencia de género de tipo verbal (0.115), de tipo física (0.268) y el impacto en la mujer (0.283); explica de forma moderada la violencia de género de tipo sexual (0.429) y de tipo psicológica (0.469); y de forma sustancial al desempeño individual (0.831). Se concluye que la violencia de género impacta negativamente el desempeño de las trabajadoras que la padecen y aumenta su intención de rotar.

76. Role of CO2 and Southern Ocean winds in glacial abrupt climate change

Knorr and to three anonymous reviewers whose recommendations have contributed to improve the manuscript., The study of Greenland ice cores revealed two decades ago the abrupt character of glacial millennial-scale climate variability. Several triggering mechanisms have been proposed and confronted against growing proxy-data evidence. Although the implication of North Atlantic deep water (NADW) formation reorganisations in glacial abrupt climate change seems robust nowadays, the final cause of these reorganisations remains unclear. Here, the role of CO2 and Southern Ocean winds is investigated using a coupled model of intermediate complexity in an experimental setup designed such that the climate system resides close to a threshold found in previous studies. An initial abrupt surface air temperature (SAT) increase over the North Atlantic by 4 K in less than a decade, followed by a more gradual warming greater than 10 K on centennial timescales, is simulated in response to increasing atmospheric CO2 levels and/or enhancing southern westerlies. The simulated peak warming shows a similar pattern and amplitude over Greenland as registered in ice core records of Dansgaard-Oeschger (D/O) events. This is accompanied by a strong Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) intensification. The AMOC strengthening is found to be caused by a northward shift of NADW formation sites into the Nordic Seas as a result of a northward retreat of the sea-ice front in response to higher temperatures. This leads to enhanced heat loss to the atmosphere as well as reduced freshwater fluxes via reduced sea-ice import into the region. A-S was also funded by the Spanish programme of the International Campus of Excellence (CEI)., Heinrich events, identified as enhanced ice-rafted detritus (IRD) in North Atlantic deep sea sediments (Heinrich, 1988; Hemming, 2004) have classically been attributed to Laurentide ice-sheet (LIS) instabilities (MacAyeal, 1993; Calov et al., 2002; Hulbe et al., 2004) and assumed to lead to important disruptions of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) and North Atlantic deep water (NADW) formation. However, recent paleoclimate data have revealed that most of these events probably occurred after the AMOC had already slowed down or/and NADW largely collapsed, within about a thousand years (Hall et al., 2006; Hemming, 2004; Jonkers et al., 2010; Roche et al., 2004), implying that the initial AMOC reduction could not have been caused by the Heinrich events themselves. Here we propose an alternative driving mechanism, specifically for Heinrich event 1 (H1; 18 to 15 ka BP), by which North Atlantic ocean circulation changes are found to have strong impacts on LIS dynamics. By combining simulations with a coupled climate model and a three-dimensional ice sheet model, our study illustrates how reduced NADW and AMOC weakening lead to a subsurface warming in the Nordic and Labrador Seas resulting in rapid melting of the Hudson Strait and Labrador ice shelves. Lack of buttressing by the ice shelves implies a substantial ice-stream acceleration, enhanced ice-discharge and sea level rise, with peak values 500-1500 yr after the initial AMOC reduction. Abstract

ScienCity es una actividad que viene siendo continuada desde 2018 con el objetivo de dar a conocer los conocimientos y tecnologías emergentes siendo investigados en las universidades, informar de experiencias, servicios e iniciativas puestas ya en marcha por instituciones y empresas, llegar hasta decisores políticos que podrían crear sinergias, incentivar la creación de ideas y posibilidades de desarrollo conjuntas, implicar y provocar la participación ciudadana, así como gestar una red internacional multidisciplinar de investigadores que garantice la continuación de futuras ediciones. Abstract

Este trabajo evaluó la condición ambiental de un tramo del Río San Juan por medio del índice de calidad ecológico (ICE) usando como grupo indicador las algas perifíticas. El método determinó un gradiente ambiental a partir de correlaciones entre variables fisicoquímicas y abundancia a través de un análisis de correspondencias canónicas, las puntuaciones obtenidas en cada punto de muestreo se utilizaron en una correlación estandarizada para un modelo de promedios ponderados (WA) que finalmente permitieron estimar el óptimo y la tolerancia de cada taxón. El agrupamiento determinó tres conjuntos, uno de ellos reunió estaciones y períodos con mayores valores medios de sólidos disueltos y ortofosfatos y menores en cuanto a la alcalinidad y ICESJ-Alg, a este grupo se asociaron la estación 2 (Quebrada la Chaparrala) y la estación 5 (Sitio Remolinos), ambos sitios se caracterizan por aguas turbias e intervención antrópica. En contraste, otro grupo tendió a registrar las tendencias contrarias, es decir, tendencia a mayores valores de la alcalinidad y el índice, características de la estación 1 (Charco corazón, sitio caracterizado por aguas claras con reducida intervención antrópica). La clasificación de los sitios ubicados en el tramo del Río usando el ICE explicó que las concentraciones de los sólidos disueltos, la alcalinidad y los ortofosfatos definieron las categorías de estado ecológico, se identificó que a mayores concentraciones de sólidos disueltos y ortofosfatos y a menores concentraciones de la alcalinidad el ICESJ-Alg es menor, es decir la calidad ecológica de las algas perifíticas disminuye. El índice brindó una respuesta objetiva y rigurosa para evaluar en forma numérica la posición de cada una de las estaciones del tramo del Río San Juan basada en la biota y variables fisicoquímicas propias del sistema.

Abstract

Antecedentes: Aunque las unidades de dolor torácico (UDT) permiten la estratificación y atención apropiada de los pacientes con dolor de pecho, en Colombia el desarrollo e implementación sistemática y estandarizada de este proceso de atención es escaso. Objetivo: Evaluar el impacto clínico y la seguridad del proceso de atención de una UDT en pacientes con probabilidad baja e intermedia de síndrome coronario agudo en Medellín, Colombia. Métodos: Estudio descriptivo que incluyó 277 pacientes, que fueron ingresados en una UDT de quienes se obtuvo información demográfica, clínica y de la gestión del proceso de atención. En el seguimiento a 30 días se evaluó la sobrevida y eventos compatibles con la enfermedad coronaria. Resultados: De toda la muestra, el 13,0% de los pacientes fue remitido a un tercer nivel de atención y solo el 2,5% tuvieron un diagnóstico final confirmado de síndrome coronario agudo. La mediana del tiempo entre la recepción en urgencias y la toma del electrocardiograma fue 10,0 minutos, en el servicio de urgencias se calculó el puntaje TIMI y se hizo la estratificación del riesgo en el 85,5 y 73,9%, respectivamente.
