Abstract

The use of metal compounds such as cisplatin and its derivatives as therapeutic and diagnostic agents against various diseases is well established. Although metallodrugs have been very successful clinically, low therapeutic selectivity and the potential toxicity of the metal compounds mandate the need for a continuous search for more efficient and specific treatments. Hence, the use of computer‐aided drug design (CADD), molecular modelling and theoretical studies in designing, selecting and applying potential drug candidates have become ever more necessary. Among the many computational and theoretical techniques, molecular docking and density functional theory play significant roles in predicting drug activity. Recent methodologies, within the past 5 years, that rely on these techniques to advance the adoption of potential metallodrugs are highlighted and thoroughly discussed. This is because advancements in computing power have led to the wide use of CADD approaches for drug discovery, development and analysis to shorten the time and reduce the costs associated with drug discovery. Abstract

Background: Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is a highly atherogenic particle identified as an independent risk factor for the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). This study aimed to investigate the frequency of Lp(a) testing and the incidence of elevated Lp(a) levels in the Pakistani population. Methods: For this observational study, Lp(a) and lipid profile data from five years (June 2015 to October 2020) were acquired from the electronic patient records of a diagnostic laboratory with a countrywide network. The association of age and total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), non-HDL, and triglyceride (TG) levels with two thresholds for Lp(a), that is, <30 mg/dL and =30 mg/dL, was calculated using the Kruskal-Wallis test, while the association between Lp(a) levels and lipid variables was calculated using Spearman correlation. Results: For five years, 1060 tests were conducted, averaging 212 tests per year. Of these, 37.2% showed Lp(a) levels above 30 mg/dL. No significant differences were observed in the results between males and females. However, younger individuals displayed significantly higher Lp(a) levels. Additionally, there was only a weak correlation between the Lp(a) levels and other lipid variables. Conclusion: Despite being recognized as a risk factor for ASCVD in the Pakistani population, only a small proportion of the large population underwent Lp(a) testing. Abstract

The recent outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) highlights the critical need for rapid, sensitive, and accurate virus detection methods to prevent and manage pandemics. Among the available sensing methods, photonic biosensors have emerged as a forefront technology, characterized by their high sensitivity, minimal analyte requirements, and suitability for miniaturization, making them ideal for point‐of‐care applications in virus detection. This review comprehensively summarizes the recent progress of photonic biosensor technologies, focusing on wavelength shift and luminescence‐based mechanisms. Their operational principles, general configurations, and the challenges associated with these technologies are looked into. An overview of the material developments used in photonic biosensors, encompassing organic, inorganic, and hybrid composite‐based materials is further presented. The discussion extends to surface functionalization using biorecognition elements, including DNA/RNA, aptamers, and antibodies, to craft the specificity of the photonic biosensors for viruses. Ultimately, the importance of a multidisciplinary approach is emphasized in developing new materials architecture, biological receptors, and modifications to photonic methods, aiming to realize better biosensors for virus detection with ultra‐high sensitivity, rapid response, and excellent selectivity. Abstract

We present a search for gravitational waves from 116 known millisecond and young pulsars using data from the fifth science run of the LIGO detectors. For this search ephemerides overlapping the run period were obtained for all pulsars using radio and X-ray observations. We demonstrate an updated search method that allows for small uncertainties in the pulsar phase parameters to be included in the search. We report no signal detection from any of the targets and therefore interpret our results as upper limits on the gravitational wave signal strength. The most interesting limits are those for young pulsars. We present updated limits on gravitational radiation from the Crab pulsar, where the measured limit is now a factor of seven below the spin-down limit. This limits the power radiated via gravitational waves to be less than ~2% of the available spin-down power. For the X-ray pulsar J0537-6910 we reach the spin-down limit under the assumption that any gravitational wave signal from it stays phase locked to the X-ray pulses over timing glitches, and for pulsars J1913+1011 and J1952+3252 we are only a factor of a few above the spin-down limit. Of the recycled millisecond pulsars several of the measured upper limits are only about an order of magnitude above their spin-down limits. For these our best (lowest) upper limit on gravitational wave amplitude is 2.3x10^-26 for J1603-7202 and our best (lowest) limit on the inferred pulsar ellipticity is 7.0x10^-8 for J2124-3358., Comment: 39 pages, 5 figures, Accepted in The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave bursts associated with 137 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that were detected by satellite-based gamma-ray experiments during the fifth LIGO science run and first Virgo science run. The data used in this analysis were collected from 2005 November 4 to 2007 October 1, and most of the GRB triggers were from the Swift satellite. The search uses a coherent network analysis method that takes into account the different locations and orientations of the interferometers at the three LIGO-Virgo sites. We find no evidence for gravitational-wave burst signals associated with this sample of GRBs. Using simulated short-duration (<1 s) waveforms, we set upper limits on the amplitude of gravitational waves associated with each GRB. We also place lower bounds on the distance to each GRB under the assumption of a fixed energy emission in gravitational waves, with typical limits of D ~ 15 Mpc (E_GW^iso / 0.01 M_o c^2)^1/2 for emission at frequencies around 150 Hz, where the LIGO-Virgo detector network has best sensitivity. Abstract

Room temperature reactions of [(η6-arene)Ru(μ-Cl)Cl]2 (arene = p-cymene) with three new bidentate (SS) organochalcogen ligands, 2a–c (2a: 1,1'-ethylenebis(3-ethyl-imidazole-2-thione), 2b: 1,1'-ethylenebis(3-propyl-imidazole-2-thione), 2c: 1,1'-methylenebis(3-ethyl-imidazole-2-thione)), and in situ anionic exchange with KPF6 afforded the corresponding new 18-electron half-sandwich [(η6-arene)RuLCl]PF6 complexes 3a–c (3a: L = 2a, 3b: L = 2b, 3c: L = 2c). The Ru(II) complexes and the organochalcogen ligands were fully characterized by spectroscopic and analytical techniques. Solid state single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of 3a–c displayed the Ru(II) center in the expected piano stool geometry. The catalytic activities of the half-sandwich ruthenium complexes toward the transfer hydrogenation of ketones to their corresponding alcohols were investigated using 2-propanol as a hydrogen source and solvent. All three Ru(II) complexes exhibited excellent catalytic activity for the transfer hydrogenation of ketones in the order 3b > 3a > 3c at an appreciably low catalyst loading of 0.5 mol% under a minimal alkaline condition of 10 mol% KOH. The catalytic activities of the complexes are influenced by the length of the alkyl spacer and the steric bulk of the N-substituents on the chelating organochalcogen ligand framework.
