The intestines of Sturnira lilium, Phyllostomus hastatus, Carolliaperspicillata, GlossophagasoricinaíindDesmodus rotundus were analized through macroscopic, morphometric and light microscopy studies. The species studied presented some common charactenstics generally found in bats, such as the absence of a caecum and an appendix. The frugivorous bat S. lilium has a longer intestine than the other species. The intestinal epithelium is of the simple columnar type, constituted of absorptive cells characterized by microvilli and goblet cells, which in all the species proved to be PAS + and AB +. These cells presented some differences in quantity and in distribution among the species. The intestinal mucosa presented morphologic and morphometric differences, such as the shape and size of villi as well as the length of the crypts of Lieberkühn. Histologically the different intestinal portions could be distinguished: in the middle portion we found few goblet cells and long villi; in the distal portion we found an increase in goblet cells and a decrease in villi height; and in the large intestine no villi were found, but rather abundant intestinal glands with numerous goblet cells. In C. perspicillata, P. hastatus and G. soricina we could observe Peyeras patches in the distal portion near the large intestine, whereas in D. rotundus and S. lilium we found aggregations of lymphoid nodulous tissue distributed along the tube. In all species we observed the presence of Paneth cells at the base of the crypts of Lieberkühn. We could observe differences among the species in the distribution of collagen in the small intestine submucosa and serosa. The outer muscular layer has one circular layer and a longitudinal layer, the circular layer increasing in thickness along the tube. Large intestine charactenstics are uniform among the species. Sfractures such as the taenia coli and the appendices epiploicae were absent. These results should contribute not only to improve understanding of bat morphology, but also to provide grounds for the evaluation of evolutionary models on the adaptive radiation of phyllostomid feeding habits. Los intestinos de Sturnira azucenas, Phyllostomus hastatus, Carollia perspicillata, Glossophaga soricina y Desmodus rotundus se analizaron a través de estudios macroscópicos, morfométricos y de microscopía de luz. Las especies estudiadas presentan algunas características comunes en general encontradas en murciélagos, tales como la ausencia de un ciego y un apéndice. Murciélagos frugívoros S. azucenas tienen un intestino más largo que el de otras especies. El epitelio intestinal es de tipo columnar simple, constituido por células de absorción que se caracterizan por microveilosidades y células caliciformes, que en todas las especies resultó ser PAS + y AB +. Estas células presentan algunas diferencias en cantidad y en la distribución entre las especies. La mucosa intestinal presenta diferencias morfológicas y morfométricas, como la forma y el tamaño de las vellosidades, así como la longitud de las criptas de Lieberkühn. Histológicamente las diferentes partes intestinales pueden ser distinguidas: en la parte media encontramos pocas células caliciformes y largas vellosidades, en la porción distal encontramos un aumento de células caliciformes y una disminución en la altura de vellosidades, y en el intestino grueso no se encontraron vellosidades, sino más bien abundantes glándulas intestinales con numerosas células caliciformes. En C. perspicillata, P hastatus y G. soricina podemos observar placas de Peyer en la porción distal, cerca del intestino grueso, mientras que en D. rotundus y S. azucenas se encontraron agrupaciones de tejido linfoide nodular distribuido a lo largo del tubo. En todas las especies se observó la presencia de células Paneth en la base de las criptas de Lieberkühn. Hemos podido observar diferencias entre las especies en la distribución de colágeno en el intestino delgado y submucosa serosa. La capa muscular exterior tiene una capa circular y una capa longitudinal, la capa circular en el aumento de espesor a lo largo del tubo. Las características del intestino grueso son uniformes entre las especies. Estructuras como la taenia coli y los apéndices epiploicos estuvieron ausentes. Estos resultados deben contribuir no sólo a mejorar la comprensión de la morfología del murciélago, sino también para sentar las bases para la evaluación de los modelos evolutivos adaptativa de la radiación en los hábitos alimenticios de filostómidos.

The excavatory movements of the spade-snouted amphisbaenid Leposternon microcephalum (Reptilia, Squamata) was studied with the aid of videofluorscopy (X-ray) techniques. This allows the observation of skull and column movements along tunneling, and a more detailed motion observation, being so a novel approach for amphisbaenian excavatory rescarches. A single specimen of Leposternon microcephalum was kept in a glass terrarium filled with semoline, and filmed with a scopy (X-ray) machine. Fixed anatomical marks on the head of the specimen were put in drawings from the framed recordings. Selected sequences of the recordings were fragmented in isolated frames for motion observation. The analysis of the recordings revealed a repetitive pattern of excavatory cycles, with retreating and downward bending of the head before its upstroke to compact the substrate tunnel roof. Follows a dropping of the head, which lays over the substrate giving support for the next retreating and downward head bending. This is an essential step that was neglected in earlier cycle descriptions. The initial downward head bending was not previously properly described for spade-snouted amphisbaenians. The excavatory movements of spade-snouted amphisbaenians are usually treated as a two-stepped cycle, but the evidence that this excavatory cycle has three steps is given here. Los movimientos excavatorios de la Amphisbaenia (culebrilla ciega), con hocico en forma de pala, Leposternon microcephalum (Reptilia: Squamata) se estudiaron con la ayuda de técnicas de videofluoroscopía (rayos X). Esto permite la observación de los movimientos del cráneo y columna, a lo largo de túneles, y una propuesta más detallada, siendo un enfoque novedoso para investigaciones de la culebrilla ciega excavadora. Un solo espécimen de Leposternon microcephalum se mantuvo en un terrario de vidrio lleno de semolina, y fue filmado con una máquina de escopía (rayos X). Se fijaron marcas anatómicas en la cabeza de éste y luego fueron dibujadas desde las grabaciones. Las secuencias seleccionadas de las grabaciones fueron fragmentadas en fotogramas aislados de la observación del movimiento. Los análisis de las grabaciones revelaron un patrón repetitivo de ciclos excavatorios, con la retirada y doblamiento hacia abajo de la cabeza, antes de su movimiento hacia arriba para compactar el sustrato del techo del túnel. Sigue una caida de la cabeza, que se pone sobre el apoyo del sustrato para la próxima retirada y doblamiento hacia abajo de la cabeza. Esto es un paso esencial que es descuidado en las descripciones anteriores del ciclo. La primera flexión baja de la cabeza no fue debidamente descrita anteriormente para Amphisbaenia con hocico en forma de pala. Los movimientos excavatorios de estos animales suelen ser tratados como un período de dos ciclos intensificados, pero la evidencia que este ciclo excavatorio consta de tres pasos, se dan aquí.

Imantodes cenchoa (Duméril, 1853) is an arboreal, nocturnal and oviparous xenodontine snake, which feeds on amphibians and lizards. It is found in Central and South America, including northern and central Brazil. In this work, we investigated the relationship between topographic anatomy and habitat in I. cenchoa. Twenty specimens (13 non pregnant females and 7 males) were examined. The topographic anatomy study was realized through observations of the internal anatomy, particularly the position and size of lung, heart, liver, left and right gonads and left and right kidneys. Results showed that all the organs are located in a posterior position in relation to the snout vent length (SVL). The centre of gravity is found at about 74% of SVL in both males and females. In males, no positive allometry was observed among the positions of the organs. Negative allometry in females was observed regarding the position of the anterior tip of the left kidney, the anterior and posterior tips of the right kidney and in both ovaries. In males, negative allometry is present in the position of all the organs. The distance between the last follicle and the cloaca was 8.78% of SVL. Our data corroborate the idea that the posterior position of all internal organs is linked to a habitat specialization of a snake, linking the arboreal species I. cenchoa with a relatively posterior internal topography Imantodes cenchoa (Duméril, 1853) es una serpiente xenodontinea, arbórea, noctura y ovípara, que se alimenta de anfibios y largartos. Se encuenta en América Central y del Sur, incluyendo las partes Norte y Central de Brasil. En este trabajo, investigamos la relaciones entre la Anatomía Topográfica y hábitat en I. cenchoa. Fueron examinados 20 especímenes (13 hembras no preñadas y 7 machos). El estudio de la Anatomía Topográfica fue realizada a través de observaciones de la anatomía interna, particularmente la posición y tamaño del pulmón, corazón, hígado, gónadas y riñones derechos e izquierdos. Los resultados mostraron que todos los órganos están localizados en una posición posterior, en relación a la entrada de la longitud del hocico(SVL). El centro de gravedad se encuentra a 74% de SVL en machos y hembras. En los machos, no fue observada alometría positiva entre la posición de los órganos. Fue observada alometría negativa en las hembras, considerando la posición del extremo anterior del riñón izquierdo, los extremos anterior y posterior del riñón derecho y ambos ovarios. En machos, se presentó alometría negativa en la posición de todos los órganos. La distancia entre el último folículo y la cloaca fue 8.78% de SVL. Nuestros datos corroboran la idea que la posición posterior de todos los órganos internos está marcada por una especialización al hábitat de una serpiente, marcando la especie arbórea I. cenchoa con una especial topografía interna posterior

Tijubina pontei is a basal lizard found in the Crato Member, Santana Formation, Lower Cretaceous (Aptian), Brazil. It is considered a sister group of Huehuecuetzpalli mixtetus, the only basal lizard previously known, found in Mexico. The paleoautoecology of T. pontei is compatible with a terrestrial animal, omnivorous, which could eventually occupy other ecological niches. Based on their dentition and ecomorphology, their behaviour could be a combination of active forager or a "sit-and-wait" one. It could even perform bipedal locomotion. Comparing T. pontei with Liolaemus lutzae, an extant brazilian lizard, we find many characters and morphological similarities. This suggests that the L. lutzae habits could be extrapolated to the paleoenvironment of T. pontei which, probably, lived in a sandy habitat, with a vegetation that could support variations in salinity and high temperatures. Tijubina pontei é um lagarto basal encontrado no Membro Crato da Formação Santana, Cretáceo Inferior do Brasil (Aptiano), considerado grupo irmão de Huehuecuetzpalli mixtetus, até então o único lagarto basal conhecido, proveniente do México. A paleoautoecologia de T. pontei é compatível com a de um animal terrestre, onívoro que, eventualmente, pudesse ocupar outros nichos ecológicos. Baseado em sua dentição e ecomorfologia, seu comportamento poderia ser combinado, como forrageador ativo ou senta-espera, podendo apresentar bípedalismo. Comparando-se T. pontei com Liolaemus lutzae, lagarto atual do Brasil, encontramos muitos caracteres e inúmeras similaridades morfológicas entre ambos, sugerindo que os hábitos de L. lutzae, poderiam ser extrapolados para o paleoambiente de T. pontei que, provavelmente, vivia em um ambiente arenoso, praial, com uma vegetação que poderia suportar variações de salinidade e de altas temperaturas.

Tropidurus torquatus and Liolaemus lutzae, found in a restinga habitat, show some morphological differences associated with differential microhabitats use. There were made measurements of the snout-vent length, length and width of the largest toe of hand and foot, and length, width, height and curvature of the claws. We counted the number of adhesive lamellae of the largest toe of each member. T. torquatus has larger toes, greater number of adhesive lamellae and higher and more curve claws than L. lutzae. No significant differences in toe and claw widths were found. These results suggest that the differences found in the morphology of toes and claws of these two species would be associated with the differential microhabitat use. T. torquatus has morphological adaptations that allow it to use the microhabitat both vertically or horizontally, while L. lutzae use it only horizontally Tropidurus torquatus y Liolaemus lutzae hallados en un hábitat de restinga, muestran algunas diferencias morfológicas asociadas a el uso diferencial de microhábitats. Se realizaron mediciones de la longitud "snout-vent", longitud y ancho del dedo mayor de la mano y el pie y, longitud, ancho, altura y curvatura de las garras. Se contó el número de lamelas adhesivas del dedo mayor de cada miembro. T. torquatus posee dedos más grandes, mayor número de lamelas adhesivas y garras más altas y curvadas que L. lutzae. No se hallaron diferencias significativas en los anchos de dedos y garras. Estos resultados sugieren que las diferencias encontradas en la morfología de dedos y garras de estas dos especies estarían asociadas con el uso diferencial del microhábitat. T. torquatus posee adaptaciones que le permiten utilizar el microhábitat tanto vertical como horizontalmente, mientras que L. lutzae solamente lo utiliza en forma horizontal

The ungual phalanxes of recent crocodylomorphs are modified into queratin covered claws. They are conical, ventrally curved with a sharp distal end. They are used during locomotion, digging and female sizing on copula. Nevertheless, fossil crocodylomorphs claws present a wider morphological and functional diversity. It was analysed fossil claws from the Late Cretaceous rocks of Adamantina (General Salgado County) and Marília (Uberaba County) Formations of the Bauru Basin. The claws found in the Adamantina Formation were associated with skeletal remains of a baurusuchid. They are laterally compressed, more ventrally curved and stronger than those of recent crocodylomorphs. They also present, at their base, many furrows related to muscle attachment. The claws found in the Marília Formation were associated to the remains of a peirosaurid. They show a great lateral compression and a blade-like ventral edge. They also present a slight ventral curvature and strong furrows in their base for muscle attachment. The morphological data obtained from these claws allow the investigation of the autoecology of these Cretaceous crocodylomorphs. As falanges ungueais dos crocodilomorfos atuais são modificadas em garras cônicas, curvas ventralmente, com extremidade distal pontiaguda, recoberta por camadas de queratina. São utilizadas comoauxílio para tração durante o deslocamento, escavação e apreensão da fêmea durante a cópula. Entretanto, os crocodilomorfos fósseis apresentam maior diversidade morfológica e possivelmente funcional destas garras. Foram analisadas garras fósseis oriundas de rochas do Cretáceo Superior da Bacia Bauru, nas formações Adamantina (Município de General Salgado) e Marília (Município de Uberaba). As garras encontradas na Formação Adamantina estavam associadas a restos esqueléticos de um baurussuquídeo. Apresentam achatamento lateral, curvatura ventral intensa e robustez maior que a observada entre crocodilomorfos recentes, e várias estrias relacionadas aos ligamentos musculares na base da garra. As garras encontradas na Formação Marília estão associadas aos ossos de um peirossaurídeo. São robustas e intensamente comprimidas lateralmente; sua face ventral é comprimida e possui aspecto laminado. Apresentam pequena curvatura ventral e fortes estrias de fixação muscular em sua base. As características morfológicas destas garras podem auxiliar na investigação dos hábitos de vida destes crocodilomorfos cretácicos.

We studied some ecomorphological relationships in six lizard species (Ameiva ameiva, Cnemidophorus littoralis, Tropidurus torquatus, Liolaemus lutzae, Mabuya agilis and M. macrorhyncha) from Restinga de Barra de Maricá, RJ. These species have marked differences in microhabitat utilization and in foraging behavior, which vary from active to «sit-and-wait». In this study, we compared the morphology of the fingers and claws of these lizards species with the different behaviors. The species that showed higher degree of arboreality (T. torquatus and M. macrorhyncha) had the 4th finger of the forelimb as the largest, while the other species had the 3rd. This seems to give some advantage for vertical sustains of the arboreal species. All species had the 4th finger as the largest of the hind limb. The two scincids (M. agilis and M. macrorhyncha) had more curved and shorter claws, which appears to aid in the climbing on the leaves of the bromeliad Neoregelia cruenta. In addition, the claws of the essentially ground-dwelling species were larger than in the other species, suggesting that larger claws give some advantage for support on sand (providing a better impulse and speed), in the excavation of burrows, in the defense against predators, in the dispute for foraging ranges and in mate selection. In this study, the foraging strategy does not seem to be related to the absolute size of the fingers of the lizards, but with relative differences in the fingers of the forelimbs Estudiamos algunas relaciones ecomorfológicas en seis especies de lagartos (Ameiva ameiva, Cnemidophorus littoralis, Tropidurus torquatus, Liolaemus lutzae, Mabuya agilis y M. macrorhyncha) de la Restinga de la Barra de Maricá, RJ. Estas especies poseen marcadas diferencias en la utilización del microhabitat y en el comportamiento en la búsqueda de alimento, que varía de activo a «sienta-y-espera». Comparamos la morfología de los dedos y de las garras de especies de lagartos con estos comportamientos diferentes. Las especies que mostraron el grado más alto de arborealidad (T. torquatus e M. macrorhyncha) tenían el 4º dedo del miembro anterior como el más grande, y las otras especies tenían el 3º. Esto parece otorgarle una ventaja para la sustentación vertical de las especies arboreas. Todas las especies tenían el 4º dedo como el más grande del miembro posterior. Los dos scincídeos (M. agilis e M. macrorhyncha) tenían garras más cortas y curvas, que parecen ajudarle para la escalada de las hojas de la bromelia Neoregelia cruenta. Adicionalmente, las garras de las especies esencialmente terrícolas son mayores que las de otras especies, sugeriendo que garras mayores confieren un mejor apoyo en la arena (dándole mejor impulso y velocidad), en la excavación de escondrijos, en la defensa contra los predadores, en la disputa por sitios de alimentación y en la selección sexual. En el estudio, la estrategia de alimentarse no parece estar relacionada con el tamaño absoluto de los dedos de los lagartos, pero sí con las diferenciass relativas en los dedos de los miembros anteriores

Os lagartos do gênero Ophiodes, conhecidos popularmente como cobras-de-vidro, se caracterizam pelo corpo em formato serpentiforme, ausência de membros anteriores e membros posteriores rudimentares. Foram registrados em diferentes regiões do Brasil e em outros países da América do Sul. Apesar de suas peculiaridades morfológicas e grande distribuição geográfica, são raros os estudos conduzidos com espécies desse gênero. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de contribuir para o conhecimento de aspectos morfológicos, reprodutivos, citogenéticos e locomotores de uma espécie do gênero utilizando variadas metodologias. Considerando os impasses taxonômicos no gênero, optamos por nomear a espécie estudada como Ophiodes cf. fragilis. Os resultados demonstraram ausência de dimorfismo sexual associada a forma e tamanho em Ophiodes cf. fragilis. Quando avaliados os mesmos parâmetros foi possível diferenciar esta espécie de espécimes de Ophiodes fragilis. O sistema urogenital possui morfologia semelhante a anteriormente descritas para Squamata. Foi constatada variação morfológica microscópica associada a períodos reprodutivos e não reprodutivos do ano. Destaca-se a presença do segmento sexual renal nos rins de machos e fêmeas adultas. O hemipênis e o hemiclitóris possuem estruturas microscópicas similares, se distinguindo quanto ao formato e morfologia externa. O número e morfologia dos cromossomos de Ophiodes cf. fragilis foi semelhante ao já conhecido para outras espécies de Ophiodes. Novas análises de citogenética tradicional e molecular foram realizadas pela primeira vez para uma espécie do gênero. Os espécimes de Ophiodes cf. fragilis se locomovem predominantemente pelos modos serpentina e retilíneo, sendo observado a movimentação em determinadas situações do membro posterior vestigial. Há fortes indícios que o membro posterior seja um membro extremamente reduzido, e não vestigial, pela presença de ossículos que o sustentam com atividade metabólica e ligados a uma fina cintura pélvica. Os osteodermos estão presentes em todo o corpo do animal, com a morfologia dos canículos equivalente a descrita para o gênero. O presente estudo apresenta dados inéditos e complementa outras informações previamente conhecidas para o gênero. As metodologias utilizadas e os resultados obtidos poderão ser facilmente replicados e utilizados como base para estudos futuros com outras espécies de Ophiodes. Lizards from genus Ophiodes, popularly known as glass snakes, are characterized by their serpentiform body, lack of forelimbs and rudimentary hindlimbs. They have been recorded in different regions of Brazil and other countries in South America. Despite their morphological peculiarities and wide geographic distribution, studies envolving this genus are scarce. This work was developed aiming to contribute to morphological, reproductive, cytogenetic and locomotor aspects knowledges of species from the genus using several methodologies. Considering some genus taxonomic issues, we chose to name the species studied as Ophiodes cf. fragilis. The results showed no sexual dimorphism associated with shape and size in Ophiodes cf. fragilis. When the same parameters were evaluated, it was possible to differentiate this species from Ophiodes fragilis specimens. The urogenital system has a morphology similar to that previously described for Squamata. Microscopic morphological variation associated with reproductive and non-reproductive periods of the year was found. We highlight the presence of renal sexual segment in males and females adults' kidneys. The hemipenis and hemiclitors have similar microscopic structures, distinguishing themselves in shape and external morphology. The chromosomes number and morphology of Ophiodes cf. fragilis wassimilar to previous described for other species of Ophiodes. New analysis of traditional and molecular cytogenetics were performed for the first time for a species belonging to the genus. Ophiodes cf. fragilis specimens move predominantly by serpentine and rectilinear modes, with movement being observed in certain situations of vestigial posterior limb. There is a strong evidence that the posterior limb is an extremely reduced limb, not a vestigial one, due to presence of ossicles supporting it with metabolic activity and linked to a thin pelvic girdle. Osteoderms are present throughout the animal's body, with canicles morphology equivalent to that described for the genus. The present study presents unpublished data and complements other information previously known for the genus. The methodologies used and the results obtained can be easily replicated and used as a basis for future studies with other species of Ophiodes.

The genus Leposternon is represented by species that occur in almost all Brazilian states. With the exception of Leposternon microcephalum, which also occurs in Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay, all other species are endemic to Brazil. They have several morphological adaptations to a fossorial lifesyle, which includes a heavily ossified and compacted skull. This assumes four morphotypes, which are associated with different types of excavation. The study of excavation modes, involving kinematics and locomotor performance, as well as 3D structural analysis and cranial morphological variations have been performed within the genus Leposternon. However, observations and models proposed by biomechanical studies do not directly associate cranial morphological variations with the type of movement and locomotor performance produced by the animal. In addition, the cranial variations in Leposternon are based only on descriptive analyzes. The objective of the present study was to verify inter- and intraspecific cranial morphological variations through the Geometric Morphometrics technique and to associate such variations with the locomotor performance of these animals, and to create a three-dimensional model for biomechanical studies, aligning the virtual model of the skeleton with videofluoroscopy images (Scientific Rotoscopy). Significant morphological variations were found among species, and these were related to body size and geographic distribution of specimens. As subtle differences in cranial size or shape may represent significance in bite force and digging capacity and in excavation speed, the cranial variation found between species and Leposternon specimens may directly influence their diet and locomotor performance. Leposternon microcephalum and L. scutigerum are morphometrically distinct species. The first is shorter and robust, with a wider head while the other is longer and thin, with a narrower head. They share the same digging movements. The animals analyzed reached relatively high speeds, but individuals with narrower skulls dug faster. A negative correlation between skull velocity and width was determined, but not with the total length or diameter of the body. The analysis of the biomechanics of the three-dimensional skeleton of a L. microcephalum specimen in the virtual environment was determinant for an even more detailed description of its excavation behavior revealing the effective participation of other structures, such as the ribs, in the excavation concern. We can state that the reliability and complexity of descriptions of cranial variations and locomotor performance and behavior increase according to the use of innovative techniques and methods. Os Amphisbaenia possuem hábito fossorial e pertencem ao grupo Squamata. O gênero Leposternon é representado por espécies que ocorrem em quase todos os Estados do Brasil. Com a exceção de Leposternon microcephalum, que ocorre também na Bolívia, Paraguai, Argentina e Uruguai, todas as outras espécies são endêmicas do Brasil. Possuem diversas adaptações morfológicas que permitem um modo de vida fossorial, incluindo um crânio fortemente ossificado e compacto. Este assume quatro morfotipos, os quais estão associados a diferentes tipos de escavação. O estudo dos modos de escavação, envolvendo cinemática e desempenho locomotor, bem como análises estruturais 3D e variações morfológicas cranianas tem sido realizados dentro do gênero Leposternon. Porém, observações e modelos propostos pelos estudos de biomecânica não associam, diretamente, variações morfológicas cranianas com o tipo de movimento e desempenho locomotor produzido pelo animal. Além disso, as variações cranianas em Leposternon são baseadas apenas em análises descritivas. Sendo assim, os objetivos do presente estudo foram verificar variações morfológicas cranianas intere intraespecíficas por meio da técnica de Morfometria Geométrica e associar tais variações ao desempenho locomotor desses animais, e criar um modelo tridimensional para estudos biomecânicos, alinhando o modelo virtual do esqueleto com imagens sequenciais do movimento em fluoroscopia (rotoscopia científica). Variações morfológicas significativas foram encontradas entre as espécies, e estas se relacionam ao tamanho do corpo e à distribuição geográfica dos espécimes. Como diferenças sutis no tamanho ou forma do crânio podem representar significância na força de mordida e capacidade de escavação, e na velocidade de escavação, a variação craniana encontrada entre as espécies e espécimes de Leposternon pode influenciar diretamente sua dieta e desempenho locomotor. Leposternon microcephalum e L. scutigerum são espécies distintas morfometricamente. A primeira é mais curta e robusta, com uma cabeça mais larga enquanto o outro é mais alongada e afilada, com uma cabeça mais estreita. Elas compartilham os mesmos movimentos de escavação. Os animais analisados atingiram velocidades relativamente altas, mas indivíduos com crânios mais estreitos cavaram mais rápido. Uma correlação negativa entre a velocidade e a largura do crânio foi determinada, mas não com o comprimento total ou diâmetro do corpo. A análise da biomecânica do esqueleto tridimensional de um exemplar de L. microcephalum no ambiente virtual foi determinante para uma descrição ainda mais detalhada sobre seu comportamento escavatório revelando a participação efetiva de outras estruturas, como as costelas, no processo de escavação. Podemos afirmar que a confiabilidade e a complexidade das descrições das variações cranianas e do comportamento e desempenho locomotor, aumentam de acordo com a utilização de técnicas e métodos inovadores.

Sibynomorphus neuwiedi e Sibynomorphus mikanii são serpentes de pequeno porte, conhecidas como cobras dormideiras, noturnas, não peçonhentas e malacófagas. Ambas ocorrem em áreas florestais de Mata Atlântica e ambientes alterados, porém S. mikanii ocorre mais frequentemente no Cerrado. Estudos parasitológicos, biológicos, ecológicos e morfológicos envolvendo essas espécies ainda são escassos. Os objetivos do presente estudo foram analisar a ecologia de helmintos, a dieta e a ecomorfologia das serpentes S. neuwiedi e S. mikanii de Minas Gerais, Brasil, registrar a helmintofauna de suas presas, verificar os efeitos da sazonalidade e do sexo, estado reprodutivo, tamanho e massa corporal destas serpentes, assim como do tamanho dos órgãos parasitados, sobre seus helmintos, e verificar os efeitos ecológico, filogenético e sexual na variabilidade morfométrica. As 39 serpentes analisadas de S. neuwiedi e as 49 de S. mikanii da Coleção Herpetológica da UFJF – Répteis tiveram aferidos comprimento e largura da cabeça, largura interocular, comprimentos rostro-cloacal, da cauda e total, e massa corporal. Posteriormente foram necropsiadas, sexadas e analisadas quanto à maturidade, tendo a cavidade corporal, órgãos e conteúdos digestórios analisados em busca de helmintos e presas. Órgãos parasitados foram medidos. Foram coletados 30 espécimes de moluscos da família Veronicellidae, eutanasiados, fixados, conservados e, somados aos espécimes encontrados nos estômagos das serpentes, foram dissecados e examinados para a identificação e em busca de helmintos. Os helmintos encontrados nas serpentes e nos moluscos foram lavados, fixados, conservados, quantificados, identificados e fotografados. Foi realizada a morfometria de trematódeos e nematoides. As comunidades de metazoários parasitos das serpentes foram formadas apenas por endoparasitos dos grupos dos helmintos e apresentaram riqueza e diversidade baixas, padrão de distribuição agregado, caráter isolacionista, especificidade quanto aos sítios de infecção e predominância de apenas um táxon parasitário por infracomunidade. As prevalências foram medianas. Ambas espécies de serpentes foram parasitadas por dois táxons de trematódeos, enquanto a serpente S. neuwiedi também apresentou três táxons de nematoides e S. mikanii, quatro (dois em comum entre estas serpentes). Os táxons parasitários predominantes foram Rhabdias sp. e Strongyluris sp. em ambas espécies de serpentes, e Mesocoelium sibynomorphi em S. neuwiedi, não apresentando o tamanho deste último helminto nesta serpente relação de intensidade-dependência. As serpentes apresentaram dietas semelhantes: moluscos de espécies da família Veronicellidae, sendo registradas as espécies-presas Sarasinula linguaeformis na serpente S. neuwiedi e Latipes erinaceus e Sarasinula sp. na serpente S. mikanii. Larvas de nematoides Strongyluris sp. foram os helmintos em comum entre essas serpentes e suas presas. A variação na sazonalidade, o sexo, o estado reprodutivo, o tamanho e a massa corporal de S. neuwiedi e S. mikanii, e o tamanho dos órgãos parasitados, não exerceram influência sobre as comunidades de helmintos destas serpentes. Essas espécies não apresentaram dimorfismo sexual. O habitat não influenciou a morfologia dessas serpentes, enquanto a filogenia influenciou a morfologia de fêmeas adultas, o que não ocorreu em fêmeas jovens e machos. Sibynomorphus neuwiedi and Sibynomorphus mikanii are small sized snakes, known as sleepy snakes, nocturnal, non-venomous and snail eaters. Both occurs in Mata Atlânica forests and impacted environments, however S. mikanii is more frequently found in Cerrado. Studies about parasitology, biology, ecology and morphology of both species are scarce. The goals of the present study where to analize ecology of helminths, the diet and ecomorphology of the snakes S. neuwiedi and S. mikanii from Minas Gerais, Brazil, register the helminths presentes in their preys, verify the effects of seazonality and gender, reproductive state, size and body mass of these snakes, so as the size of parasitized organs, on their helminths, and verify the ecological, phylogenetic and sexual effects at morphometric variation. The 39 analyzed individuals of S. neuwiedi and the 49 specimens of S. mikanii from the Herpetological Collection of the UFJF – Reptiles have had measured their length and width of head, length between eyes, rostrum-cloacal length, tail and total, and body mass. Subsequently where necropsied, sexed and analyzed the maturity, the body cavity, organs and digestive contents searched in search of helminths and preys. Parasitized organs were measured. It were colected 30 specimens of snails from Veronicellidae family, euthanasia was realized and the animal fixed, conserved and, added to the specimens found in snakes stomach, these were dissected and examined to identification and pursuit of helminths. The helminths found in the snakes and in molluscs were washed, fixed, conserved, quantified, identified and photographed. It was realized morphometry of trematodes and nematodes. The metazoans parasites communities of the snakes where composed only by endoparasites from helminths group and presents low richness and diversity, distribution patttern assembled, isolacionist profile, specificity to infection sites and predominance of only one parasite taxon by infracommunity. The prevalences were average. Both species of snakes were parasitized by two taxa of trematodes, while S. neuwiedi presented also three taxa of nematodes and S. mikanii, four (two in common amongst these snakes). The prevailing parasites taxa were Rhabdias sp. and Strongyluris sp. in both species of snakes, and Mesocoelium sibynomorphi in S. neuwiedi, do not presenting the size of this last helminth in this snake relation of intensity-dependency. The snakes presented similar diet: molluscs from species of Veronicellidae family, being registered the prey-species Sarasinula linguaeformis in S. neuwiedi and Latipes erinaceus and Sarasinula sp. in S. mikanii. Larval forms from the nematode Strongyluris sp. was the common helmint between these snakes and their prey. The seazonality variation, gender, reproductive state, size and body mass of S. neuwiedi and S. mikanii, and the size of parasitized organs, did not influenced the helminth communities of these snakes. These species did not present sexual dimorphism. The habitat did not influence the morphology these snakes, while the phylogeny influenced the morphology of adult females, what did not occurred in young females and male.

CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior O cágado-pescoço-de-cobra, Hydromedusa maximiliani, é uma espécie endêmica da Mata Atlântica e ameaçada de extinção na categoria Vulnerável pela IUCN, cujas populações estão associadas principalmente com riachos de interior de mata, mas a distribuição geográfica relacionada com esses ambientes hidrologicamente dinâmicos ainda é pouco entendida. Modelagem de Distribuição de Espécies tem sido uma ferramenta amplamente usada nos últimos anos. O algoritmo da Máxima Entropia, Maxent, permite prever a distribuição geográfica potencial de espécies a partir de dados de presença. Este estudo teve por objetivos construir modelos ecológicos para prever a distribuição potencial de H. maximiliani que poderão fornecer subsídios para elaboração de novas estratégias de conservação e, dessa forma contribuir com o avanço no conhecimento sobre o padrão de sua distribuição em regiões com domínio da Mata Atlântica. Os Dados de ocorrência foram obtidos, entre setembro de 2012 e setembro de 2013, através de visitas às coleções zoológicas, levantamentos bibliográficos e coleta de coordenadas geográficas no campo. Para a construção do modelo foi usado o algoritmo Maxent, auxiliado pelo ArcGis versão 10 e pelo modelo digital de elevação do “Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission”. As variáveis ambientais foram obtidas pelo Worldclim version 1.1 Global Cimate Surface 10. O modelo foi avalizado pelo valor de AUC (Area Under the ROC Curve) e pelo teste estatístico Jackknife. Foram compilados 42 pontos para a distribuição da H. maximiliani. A distribuição potencial se estendeu desde o sul da Bahia até o estado de São Paulo. O modelo gerado mostrou uma alta capacidade preditiva, com valor AUC superior a 0,97, e apresentou uma transferabilidade satisfatória (i.e. capacidade para prever distribuições em regiões não amostradas). O alto valor AUC evidencia um bom modelo de distribuição geográfica potencial de espécies. No entanto, em modelos de larga escala, esse valor pode-se apresentar proporcional ao tamanho da escala, o que levaria a uma interpretação equivocada do modelo. Contudo, as áreas previstas para a distribuição da H. maximiliani no presente estudo mostraram-se realistas e condizentes com a distribuição real da espécie. The Maximilian’s snake-necked-turtle, Hydromedusa maximiliani, is specie endemic to the Atlantic Forest and endangered in category Vulnerable by IUCN, whose populations are mainly associated with streams inside the forest, but the geographical distribution related to these environments hydrologically dynamic is poorly understood. Species Distribution Modeling has been a tool widely used in recent years. The Maximum Entropy algorithm, Maxent predicts the potential geographic distribution of species from presence data. This study aimed to build ecological models to predict the potential distribution of H. maximiliani that may provide support for development of new strategies for the conservation and thus contribute to the advancement in knowledge about the pattern of their distribution in regions with the Atlantic Forest domain. The occurrence data were obtained between September 2012 and September 2013, through visits to the zoological collections, bibliographic and collection of geographic coordinates in the field. To construct the model we used the Maxent algorithm, aided by ArcGIS version 10 and the digital elevation model of the "Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission". The environmental variables were obtained by Worldclim version 1.1 Cimate Global Surface 10. The model was endorsed by the AUC (Area Under the ROC Curve) and the statistical test Jackknife. 42 points were compiled for the distribution of H. maximiliani. The potential distribution extended from southern Bahia to São Paulo. The generated model showed high predictive ability, with higher AUC value to 0.97, and showed a satisfactory transferability (i.e. ability to predict distributions in regions not sampled ). The high AUC value shows a good distribution model geographic potential of species. However, in models of large scale, this value can be presented proportional to the size of the scale, which would lead to a misinterpretation of the model. However, the areas provided for the distribution of H. maximiliani in this study are realistic and consistent with the distribution realityof the species.

CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior A costa brasileira é área prioritária para conservação das tartarugas marinhas, pois cinco das setes espécies de tartarugas existentes no mundo podem ser encontradas no Brasil, estando todas ameaçadas de extinção. As ameaças para esses animais incluem: Ocupação da costa, poluição, doenças e principalmente capturas incidentais em artefatos de pesca. Resgatar a sabedoria popular de pescadores e o conhecimento local é essencial para a conservação desses quelônios. O Objetivo desse trabalho foi apresentar e comparar o conhecimento de pescadores sobre tartarugas de três cidades do sul do Espírito Santo. O estudo foi realizado nas cidades de Anchieta, Piúma e Guarapari, ES, Brasil. As informações relacionadas ao conhecimento local e interação entre as pessoas e tartarugas marinhas foram coletadas através de entrevistas utilizando questionário semiestruturado. Foram entrevistados 44 pescadores e 7 marisqueiras, sendo 19 pescadores em Piúma, 5 pescadores e 7 marisqueiras em Guarapari e 20 pescadores em Anchieta. A tartaruga-de-couro é mais conhecida em Piúma e a verde a mais conhecida em Anchieta e Guarapari. As características que permitem diferenciar os animais são formas do casco e cor e os animais são conhecidos por vários nomes populares. Em Piúma e Anchieta foram citadas altas taxas de captura em rede e consumo de carne de tartaruga. As atitudes em relação as tartarugas marinhas e o conhecimento sobre a reprodução desses animais são diferentes em cada cidade devido a fatores como: Cidade que reside e arte de pesca. Os resultados desse estudo indicam que a conservação de quelônios marinhos requer conhecimento das práticas diárias de comunidades locais e as peculiaridades envolvidas na relação entre os pescadores e as tartarugas marinhas, além do levantamento dos impactos causados pelas práticas diárias. The Brazilian coast is a priority for conservation of sea turtles, because five of the seven species in the world and they can be found in Brazil and all of them are endangered. The threats to this animal include: Occupancy of the coast, pollution, disease and mostly incidental catches in fishing artifacts. Rescue the folk wisdom of fishermen and local knowledge is essential to the conservation of these turtles. The aim of this present study was to show and compare the knowledge of fishermen on turtles from three cities in southern of Espírito Santo. The study was conducted in the cities of Anchieta, Piuma and Guarapari, ES, Brazil. The information related to local knowledge and interaction between people and sea turtles were collected through interviews using a semistructured questionnaire. Forty-four fishermen and seven seafood were interviewed, where nineteen were fishermen on Piuma, five fishermen and seven seafood in Guarapari and twenty fishermen in Anchieta. The leatherback turtle is best known in Piúma and the Green one is best known in Anchieta and Guarapari. The characteristics to differentiate these animals are shell shape and color and they are known by several common names. In Piuma and Anchieta were cited high rates of capture on fishing net and consumption of turtle meat. Attitudes and knowledge about reproduction is different in each city due to factors such as location and fishing gear. The results of this study indicate that the conservation of marine turtles requires knowledge of the practices of local communities and the peculiarities involved in the relationship between fishermen and turtles, and a survey of impacts caused by everyday practices.

CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior A autotomia caudal é uma resposta anti-predação voluntária amplamente empregada por lagartos. Suas consequências estão bem descritas na literatura, mas os fatores envolvidos na sua ocorrência carecem de aprofundamento. Pretendeu-se então averiguar se há diferença tanto na propensão à autotomia quanto no padrão de crescimento corporal e caudal de indivíduos com tamanho corporal diferente durante as estações quente/chuvosa (verão tropical) e fria/seca (inverno tropical). Para tanto foram mantidos em terrários externos três grupos experimentais (n = 19) de massas corpóreas diferentes (P1, P2 e P3), cujas caudas foram autotomizadas por constrição mecânica, medindo-se a pressão exercida e o tempo até a soltura da cauda. Dados morfométricos foram aferidos semanalmente e avaliados usando o test T bicaudal para amostras não pareadas, comparando-se as variáveis em função do peso corporal. As porções caudais liberadas foram conservadas em álcool e dissecadas, assim como quatro lagartos que morreram ao longo dos experimentos. A anatomia caudal foi analisada e comparada com descrições existentes. Elaborou-se um modelo tridimensional passível de ser usado como ferramenta didática e analítica. Foram encontradas em média 32 vértebras caudais em T. itambere. A maioria dos parâmetros avaliados não apresentou significância estatística, devido ao pequeno número amostral, mas tendências e possibilidades são apresentadas e discutidas em vista da literatura atual. Foi significativa a relação inversa entre temperatura cloacal e tempo até a autotomia. Autotomy is an anti-predator behavior widely employed by lizards. The energetic consequences of this process are vastly describe in literature, yet the details involved in it’s occurrence lack thoroughness. This study intent to evaluate if there are differences related to body weight in propensity to realize autotomy, in body and caudal growth, both during the hot/wet season (tropical summer) and the cold/dry season (tropical winter). To accomplish that three groups of lizards (n = 19) with different body mass (P1, P2 and P3) were kept in out-doors cages during cold (July to September 2012) and hot seasons (November 2012 to January 2013). Autotomy was induced by constriction of the tail, while measuring the pression applie to it’s surface as well as the time until it’s release. Morphometric data was assessed weekly and processed using two-tailed t-test for unpaired samples, comparing variables according to body weight. The released portion of the tail was preserved in alcohol and dissected, as were the four lizards that happened to die during the experimental process. Caudal anatomy was analyzed and compare with preexisting descriptions. A three-dimensional model with didactic and analytic potential was elaborated. We found an average of 32 caudal vertebraes in T. itambere. Most of the analyzed parameters did not present statistical significance, due to the small sample size. However we present and discuss every tendency and possibility in face of the current literature. We did found a significant inverse relation between cloacal temperature and the time subjects took to undergo autotomy.

CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Os filhotes e juvenis de quelônios não apresentam anatomicamente características sexuais secundárias visíveis, não sendo possível diferenciar o sexo através da observação da carapaça. Vários autores defendem a análise histológica como a melhor técnica para se realizar a sexagem de filhotes da espécie Caretta caretta. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi realizar a identificação sexual de filhotes de C. caretta através da morfometria geométrica e da histomorfologia. Foram utilizados 73 filhotes natimortos, coletados em diversos ninhos ao longo da Praia da Guanabara, Anchieta, Espírito Santo, Brasil. Para a análise morfométrica, cada animal teve a carapaça fotografada. Posicionado em decúbito dorsal foram retirados o plastrão, intestino grosso, fígado e bexiga para permitir a visualização das gônadas e rins, que após fotografados foram armazenados em formalina 10% tamponada. Foram utilizados os softwares TPSUtil, TPSDig2, CoordGen, PCAGen e CVAGen para as análises morfométricas. O processamento do material seguiu as etapas convencionais da técnica histológica. Com base na análise de componentes principais (PCA), PC1 explicou 19,83% da variação na carapaça dos filhotes, enquanto PC2 explicou 14,71%. Análise de variáveis canônicas revelou que há uma tendência de dimorfismo sexual entre os filhotes, através da carapaça e que essa pode estar relacionada com o sexo dos exemplares. As gônadas estavam localizadas próximas ao hilo renal, com formato filiforme. Nos ovários foi possível observar um córtex com epitélio cúbico e bem desenvolvido, associado a uma medula desorganizada e rica em matriz intersticial. O córtex dos testículos era composto por uma fina camada de epitélio pavimentoso simples, uma medula muito bem desenvolvida e com pouca matriz intersticial, observando-se vários túbulos seminíferos, nitidamente distinguíveis. Trabalhos realizados com filhotes de tartaruga cabeçuda e outras espécies de quelônios, utilizando a morfometria geométrica, também demonstraram haver diferenças na carapaça que distinguem o sexo de filhotes recém nascidos. As características histológicas identificadas foram semelhantes às encontradas por outros autores. Outros trabalhos defendem que a análise macroscópica é suficiente para identificar o sexo de filhotes de tartarugas, o que foi demonstrado efetivamente para Dermochelys coriacea e Chelonia mydas, mas não foi efetivo para C. caretta. A morfometria geométrica se mostrou uma ferramenta útil, tendo a histomorfometria das gônadas de filhotes de C. caretta, confirmado o dimorfismo sexual apontado pela morfometria geométrica. The hatchlings and juvenile turtles have not anatomically visible secondary sex characteristics, it is not possible to differentiate sex by viewing the carapace. Several authors advocate histological analysis as the best technique for performing sexing chicks of the species Caretta caretta. The aim of this study was to identify sex of baby C. caretta by geometric morphometrics and histomorphology. 73 stillborn pups were used, collected in different nests along the Guanabara´s, Beach Anchieta, Espírito Santo, Brazil. For morphometric analysis each animal had photographed the shell. Were positioned supine removed the plastron, large intestine, liver and bladder to allow visualization of the kidneys and gonads, photographed after they were stored in 10% buffered formalin. We used the software TPSUtil, TPSDig2, CoordGen, PCAGen CVAGen for morphometrics analysis. The histological analysis followed the steps of conventional histological technique. Based on principal component analysis (PCA), PC1 explained 19.83% of the variation in the carapace of the puppies, while PC2 explained 14.71%. Canonical analysis revealed that there is a trend of sexual dimorphism between the pups through the carapace and that this may be related to the sex of the specimens. The gonads were located near the renal hilum, with threadlike format. Ovarian cortex was possible to observe a cuboidal epithelium with well developed, associated with a disorganized medulla and interstitial-rich matrix. The cortex of the testes was composed of a thin layer of simple squamous epithelium, a very well-developed marrow and low interstitial matrix, observing several seminiferous tubules clearly distinguishable. The macroscopic analysis of gonads alone does not allow the differentiation of the sexes, thus corroborating other work done with this species and other sea turtles. Work done with baby loggerhead turtles and other species also showed significant differences in the carapace that distinguish the sex of newly hatched chicks. The histological features were similar to those identified by other authors, some argue that the macroscopic analysis is sufficient to identify the sex of pups, which has been shown to effectively Dermochelys coriacea and Chelonia mydas, but was not effective in C. caretta. Hormonal measurements were also satisfactory to sex in order to cubs C. mydas, but authors disagree on this method to other species. This genus has a complex systematic history. Although morphological and molecular studies on the genus are available, it is still difficult to identify and classify these individuals who have a high karyotypic diversification. Such peculiarities make them interesting to test the relationship between these characteristics and skull variation. In order to differentiate the species Thrichomys apereoides, Thrichomys laurentius and Thrichomys pachyurus we used geometric morphometrics on skull landmarks. Pictures were taken dorsal, ventral and lateral sides of 204 skulls, in which homologous reference points were established. From the coordinates of these points, it was possible to eliminate the effect of size of the species and to 1) test the differences among species and between animals born and raised in the lab and field animals as well as between sexes and the interaction between these factors 2) quantify shape differences among species 3) to describe differences obtained among the groups tested. The results revealed statistically significant differences in shape among species, between sexes and between laboratory and field animals. Size was not significantly different between any of the factors analyzed. Major shape differences were located in the parietal and parieto-frontal region, in the zygomatic arches e in the incisive region. Differences in skull shape between laboratory and field animals involve the posterior portion of the zygomatic arches. The individual fo Caetit?, BA, are morphologically different from other T. laurentius populations indicating a possible dissociation between morphological and karyotypical evolution. Este g?nero possui uma sistem?tica complexa e apesar de j? existirem estudos moleculares e morfol?gicos sobre o g?nero, ainda ? dif?cil identificar e classificar estes indiv?duos que possuem uma alta diversifica??o cariot?pica. Tais particularidades os tornam interessantes para testar a rela??o existente entre estas caracter?sticas e principalmente, a forma do cr?nio. Para tal, o presente trabalho com o objetivo de diferenciar as esp?cies Thrichomys apereoides, Thrichomys laurentius e Thrichomys pachyurus, utilizou como ferramenta a morfometria geom?trica sob marcos anat?micos cranianos. Foram tomadas imagens dorsais, ventrais e laterais de 204 cr?nios, nas quais foram estabelecidos pontos de refer?ncia hom?logos. A partir das coordenadas destes pontos, foi poss?vel eliminar o efeito do tamanho das esp?cies e 1) testar as diferen?as entre esp?cies, entre animais nascidos em biot?rio e campo e entre sexos assim como suas intera??es 2) quantificar as diferen?as de forma entre as tr?s esp?cies 3) descrever as diferen?as na forma obtidas entre os diferentes grupos testados. Os resultados revelaram diferen?as estatisticamente significativas entre a forma do cr?nio das diferentes esp?cies assim como entre animais criados em biot?rio e animais de campo. Tamb?m foi detectado dimorfismo sexual na forma. O tamanho n?o foi significativamente diferente entre nenhum dos fatores analisados. As principais diferen?as de forma entre as esp?cies se localizaram na regi?o parietal e parieto-frontal, nos arcos zygom?ticos e na inser??o do incisivo. As diferen?as de forma entre animais de biot?rio e de campo se localizaram principalmente na parte posterior do arco zygom?tico. Nonetheless, many snakes are so similar in their morphological patterns that it becomes quite difficult to distinguish any adaptive divergence that may exist. Many authors suggest that the microornamentations on the scales of reptiles have important functional value. Here, we examined variations on the micromorphology of the exposed oberhautchen surface of dorsal, lateral, and ventral scales from the midbody region of Xenodontinae snakes: Sibynomorphus mikani (terricolous), Imantodes cenchoa (arboreal), Helicops modestus (aquatic) and Atractus pantostictus (fossorial). They were pulverized with gold and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All species displayed similar microstructures, such as small pits and spinules, which are often directed to the scale caudal region. On the other hand, there were some singular differences in scale shape and in the microstructural pattern of each species. S. mikani and I. cenchoa have larger spinules arranged in a row which overlap the following layers on the scale surface. Species with large serrate borders are expected to have more frictional resistance from the caudal-cranial direction. This can favor life on environments which require more friction, facilitating locomotion. In H. modestus, the spinules are smaller and farther away from the posterior rows, which should help reduce water resistance during swimming. The shallower small pits found in this species can retain impermeable substances, as in aquatic Colubridae snakes. The spinules adhering to the caudal scales of A. pantostictus seem to form a more regular surface, which probably aid their fossorial locomotion, reducing scale-ground friction. Our data appear to support the importance of functional microstructure, contributing to the idea of snake species adaptation to their preferential microhabitats. Contudo, muitas serpentes s?o t?o semelhantes em seus padr?es morfol?gicos que se torna dif?cil distinguir diverg?ncias adaptativas a olho nu. Diversos autores sugerem que as microornamenta??es das escamas de r?pteis t?m signific?ncia funcional. Nosso trabalho comparou varia??es na micromorfologia da superf?cie das escamas de diferentes esp?cies de serpentes da subfam?lia Xenodontinae com microhabitats distintos, a saber: Sibynomorphus mikani (terrestre), Imantodes cenchoa (arb?rea), Helicops modestus (aqu?tica) e Atractus pantostictus (foss?ria). Foram retiradas da regi?o mediana do corpo das serpentes escamas dorsais, laterais e ventrais. Ap?s isso, foram pulverizadas com ouro e analisadas atrav?s da microscopia eletr?nica de varredura (MEV). As esp?cies apresentaram microestruturas similares, como microcovas e esp?culas quase sempre direcionadas para a regi?o caudal das escamas. Por?m, diferen?as na forma e no padr?o microestrutural foram singulares em cada esp?cie. Sibynomorphus mikani e I. cenchoa mostraram esp?culas grandes e enfileiradas que sobrep?em as camadas subseq?entes na superf?cie das escamas. Em esp?cies com longas denticula??es sobrepostas sobre as bordas posteriores, ? esperada maior resist?ncia friccional da dire??o posterior para a anterior das escamas. Tal disposi??o pode favorecer a locomo??o desses animais em ambientes que requerem mais atrito para a locomo??o. Em H. modestus, as esp?culas s?o menores e mais afastadas das fileiras posteriores, sugerem uma diminui??o da for?a de resist?ncia ? ?gua durante a nata??o. As microcovas, mais rasas, observadas nesta esp?cie, podem reter subst?ncias impermeabilizantes, como j? verificado em outras serpentes Colubridae aqu?ticas. As esp?culas fundidas ?s camadas posteriores nas escamas de A. pantostictus formam uma superf?cie mais regular e sugerem neste tipo de locomo??o foss?ria, ajudar na locomo??o, reduzindo o atrito entre escama e o solo. This diversity could be related to the different microhabitats that these animals live on. This study aims to compare the predatory behavior of Eunectes murinus (semi- aquatic) (n=4), Corallus hortulanus (arboreal) (n=2), Boa constrictor (semi-arboreal) (n=4) e Epicrates cenchria (terrestrial) (n= 1), relating it to their divergent habitats. The specimens were videotaped using a camera VHS. The Eunectes murinus youngsters were taped on a 60X40X30cm aquarium within an acclimatized room and the adult on a non-acclimatized 28m2 room, with a 200X400X100cm pool. For the other species, the animals were on a 90X50X40cm terrarium. The images were analyzed frame by frame on the software Adobe Premi?re. The semi-aquatic species, Eunectes murinus, after the prey detection, submerged completely, leaving only its head above water. After the strike, the anacondas pulled the prey under water, killing them by constriction and drowning. Swallowing only began after the prey s head was found. Coil helped the swallowing supporting the prey. The strikes made by the arboreal snake Corallus hortulanus were the farthest. The preys were rolled up and brought towards the support the snake was using, usually a branch. With part of the coiled body in a branch and the head hung below this, the serpents were positioned with the mouth opened underneath of the preys to swallow them, favored by the action of the gravity. The terrestrial species, Epicrates cenchria, attacked throwing their bodies over the prey and suffocating it by constriction. During swallowing, the ground was used as support, to force the preys into the snake mouth. The Boa constrictor displayed the same arboreal and terrestrial behavior, but it did not use the ground to help during swallowing. These data, in general, help understand the different predatory behaviors of this group of constrictor snakes relating it to their divergent habits. The strategies observed in each species to attack and swallow their preys seem to directly reflect their ecology. This study also analyzed the growth of three female anaconda siblings, with records from their birth in captivity up to around 14 months of age. The snakes were kept in a controlled environment with constant temperature and data related to biometry, feeding and skin shedding were recorded. At the end of these 445 days, the siblings had grown on average 2.6 times their initial length and increased their initial weight by 3830.10g, incorporating about 43.5% of total food ingested to their body mass. They showed a total of 0.69 skin sheddings per month in that period, and did not exhibit significant differences in shedding intervals, nor in body growth (weight and length), when compared among themselves. Food was refused at times, coinciding with the days that preceded the ecdyses. Sheddings do not seem to be explained by feeding or growth, which suggests a relation to other endogenous factors. Este estudo objetivou comparar o comportamento predat?rio de Eunectes murinus (semiaqu?tica) (n=4), Corallus hortulanus (arbor?cola) (n=2) Boa constrictor (semiarbor?cola) (n=4) e Epicrates cenchria (terrestre) (n= 1) e descrev?-los de acordo com seus diferentes h?bitos. Os indiv?duos foram filmados em comportamento de preda??o com uma c?mera de v?deo VHS em recintos que variaram conforme o tamanho corporal de cada animal. Os indiv?duos de Eunectes murinus foram filmados em aqu?rios de 60X40X30cm dentro de uma sala c1imatizada, enquanto que para as outras esp?cies foram utilizados terr?rios de 90X50X40cm. Para a sucuri adulta, um viveiro externo sem climatiza??o, cercado com tela de arame com 28 m2 aproximadamente e uma piscina de 200X400X100cm. As imagens foram analisadas quadro a quadro com um videocassete e pelo programa Adobe Premiere. A esp?cie semi-aqu?tica, E. murinus, ap?s a detec??o da presa submergiam completamente o corpo emergindo a cabe?a ap?s deslocar-se para pr?ximo da mesma. Ap?s o bote, as serpentes puxaram as presas para dentro da ?gua, matando-as por constric??o e afogamento. Posteriormente ? subjuga??o, as serpentes buscaram a cabe?a das presas para iniciar a sua degluti??o. Para ingerir a presa, as serpentes fizeram uso das espiras como apoio, segurando as presas. Os botes desferidos pelas serpentes arbor?colas Corallus hortulanus foram os mais distantes, as presas foram trazidas em dire??o ao suporte onde se encontravam apoiadas, em geral um galho, junto ao corpo das serpentes que as enrodilharam para mat?-las. Com parte do corpo enrolado num galho e a cabe?a pendurada abaixo deste, as serpentes posicionaram-se com a boca aberta por baixo das presas para degluti- las, favorecidas pela a??o da gravidade. Na esp?cie terrestre, Epicrates cenchria, as serpentes desferiram o bote arremessando o corpo sobre as presas, enrodilhando-as para a constric??o. Na degluti??o, o substrato do terr?rio foi utilizado como apoio para for?ar a entrada das presas em sua boca. A Boa constrictor apresentou comportamento arb?reo e terrestre na captura da presa, mas n?o utilizou o substrato para a degluti??o. Os dados possibilitaram observar diferentes comportamentos de preda??o neste grupo de serpentes constrictoras de diferentes h?bitos. As estrat?gias apresentadas pelas esp?cies para subjugar e deglutir suas presas parece refletir a vida nos diferentes habitats ocupados pelos g?neros estudados. Este trabalho tamb?m estudou o crescimento de tr?s proles f?meas de sucuri, com registros desde o nascimento em cativeiro at? cerca de 14 meses de vida. Mantidas em ambiente controlado de temperatura constante. Foram tomados dados biom?tricos, da alimenta??o e de mudas. Ao final desses registros, os filhotes haviam crescido em m?dia 2,6 vezes seus comprimentos e 3830,10g em massa, aproximadamente 43,5% do alimento total ingerido. Realizaram neste per?odo 0,69 trocas de pele por m?s, n?o apresentando significativa diferen?a nestes eventos, nem no crescimento corp?reo. Por vezes o alimento foi recusado, em dias que antecediam as ecdises. As mudas n?o parecem ser explicadas pela alimenta??o ou crescimento, sugerindo rela??es com outros fatores end?genos.

Foram produzidas seções histológicas de 80 espécimes. Métodos de colorações histológicas e histoquímicas foram empregados. Os preparados histológicos foram examinados e fotomicrografias foram realizadas usando um vídeo-microscópio. Cinco macro-categorias do estômago são propostas a partir das variações macroscópicas identificadas: Hematófaga, Simples-sacular, Sacular, Intermediária-sacular, e Complexasacular. Quatro padrões regionais de pregas gástricas (longitudinal e paralelo, ondulado e paralelo, complexo e com interdigitações, e tortuoso e anastomosado) são reconhecidos, assim como dois padrões de esfincter pilórico. Os resultados histológicos mostram que os tipos celulares típicos das glândulas gástricas variam regionalmente dentro da mucosa e principalmente nas glândulas fúndicas. As glândulas fúndicas de Desmodontinae apresentaram a menor profundidade e número reduzido de células. Três padrões morfológicos das vilosidades intestinais (digitiforme, foliáceo e piramidal) são reconhecidos na junção do gastroduodenal. As glândulas de Brünner estão presentes na submucosa duodenal da junção do gastroduodenal em quase todos os Phyllostomidae, à exceção de Uroderma e Platyrrhinus. A histoquÍmica revela diferenças entre a distribuição das glicoproteínas e proteoglicanas na mucosa gástrica. Este é o primeiro estudo detalhado da distribuição e da caracterização das fibras colágenas e elásticas na parede do estômago dos Chiroptera. Avaliações cladísticas das informações contidas no trato digestório de filostomídeos indicam resultados promissores. Comparative morphological study of the stomach and the gastroduodenal junction is undertaken in 12 genera of bats representing five sub-families of the family Phyllostomidae. We dissected and prepared histological sections of the stomach and gastroduodenal junction of 80 microchiropteran specimens. Standard staining and histochemical procedures were employed. Sections were examined under light microscopy and photomicrographies were taken using a video microscope. Line drawings were made for recording gross morphological variations, which indicate that five macro categories are identifiable: Hematophaga, Simple-sacular, Sacular, Intermediate-sacular, and Com pie xsacular. We identified four regional gastric pattems of the rugae (longitudinal and parallel, undulated and parallel, complex and interdigitating, and finally tortuous and ana~tomosed) as well as two pyloric sphincter types. Histological results show that the typical cellular types vary regionally within the gastric mucosae and principally in the fundic glands among genera and between sub-families. The fundic glands of Desmodontinae showed the shallowest depth and the least number of cells. Three pattems of villi morphology (digitiform, foliaceous and pyramidal) are recognized at the gastroduodenal junction. The Brünner' s gland is present at the submucosa of the gastroduodenal j unction in almost all Phyllostomidae except Uroderma and Platyrrhinus. The histochemistry demonstrates differences between the distribution of glycoproteins and proteoglycans which can be possibly related to diet representing adaptations to it. This is the first detailed study of the distribution and characterization of elastic and collagenous fibers in the stomach wall. The distribution of the enteroendocrine cells is also described. Cladistic evaluations of the information content of phyllostomid digestive system indicate quite promising results.
