Abstract

As wildfires intensify and fire seasons lengthen across the western US, the development of models that can predict smoke plume concentrations and track wildfire-induced air pollution exposures has become critical. Wildfire smoke plume height is a key indicator of the vertical placement of plume mass emitted from wildfire-related aerosol sources in climate and air quality models. With advancements in Earth observation (EO) satellites, spaceborne products for aerosol layer height or plume injection height have recently emerged with increased global-scale spatiotemporal resolution. However, to evaluate column radiative effects and refine satellite algorithms, vertical profiles of regionally representative aerosol properties from wildfires need to be measured directly. In this study, we conducted the first comprehensive evaluation of four passive satellite remote-sensing techniques specifically designed for retrieving plume height. We compared these satellite products with the airborne Wyoming Cloud Lidar (WCL) measurements during the 2018 Biomass Burning Flux Measurements of Trace Gases and Aerosols (BB-FLUX) field campaign in the western US. Two definitions, namely, "plume top" and "extinction-weighted mean plume height", were used to derive the representative heights of wildfire smoke plumes, based on the WCL-derived vertical aerosol extinction coefficient profiles. Using these two definitions, we performed a comparative analysis of multisource satellite-derived plume height products for wildfire smoke. We provide a discussion related to which satellite product is most appropriate for determining plume height characteristics near a fire event or estimating downwind plume rise equivalent height, under multiple aerosol loadings. Our findings highlight the importance of understanding the sensitivity of different passive remote-sensing techniques on space-based wildfire smoke plume height observations, in order to resolve ambiguity surrounding the concept of "effective smoke plume height". As additional aerosol-observing satellites are planned in the coming years, our results will inform future remote-sensing missions and EO satellite algorithm development. Abstract

Establishing the abundance and physical properties of regolith and boulders on asteroids is crucial for understanding the formation and degradation mechanisms at work on their surfaces. Using images and thermal data from NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft, we show that asteroid (101955) Bennu's surface is globally rough, dense with boulders, and low in albedo. The number of boulders is surprising given Bennu's moderate thermal inertia, suggesting that simple models linking thermal inertia to particle size do not adequately capture the complexity relating these properties. At the same time, we find evidence for a wide range of particle sizes with distinct albedo characteristics. Our findings imply that ages of Bennu's surface particles span from the disruption of the asteroid's parent body (boulders) to recent in situ production (micrometre-scale particles).

Abstract

Endogenous Cushing syndrome derives from a chronic, inappropriate, and sustained increase in glucocorticoids, mainly in response to remarkably high serum concentrations of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) secreted from an adenohypophyseal tumor, Cushing's disease, or due to ectopic production by neuroendocrine tumors. Adrenal Cushing’s disease is caused by tumors of the adrenal cortex that autonomously produce cortisol and this is independent from ACTH action. Clinical course, treatment, prognosis, and possible complications depend on correctly identifying the triggering lesion; this situation frequently becomes a challenging experience for clinicians. We present the case of a 62-year-old woman, admitted for constitutional symptoms with severe hypokalemia that was difficult to correct and severe hypercortisolism., El síndrome de Cushing endógeno deriva de un aumento crónico, inapropiado y sostenido de glucocorticoides principalmente como respuesta al exceso en las concentraciones séricas elevadas de la hormona adrenocorticotropa (ACTH) desde un tumor adenohipofisiario, enfermedad de Cushing; o producida de forma ectópica por tumores neuroendocrinos. El Cushing suprarrenal se origina por tumores de la corteza adrenal que producen de forma autónoma cortisol y es independiente de ACTH. El curso clínico, tratamiento, pronóstico y posibles complicaciones dependen de identificar de forma correcta la lesión desencadenante; situación que en múltiples ocasiones resulta en una experiencia retadora para los clínicos. Se presenta el caso de una mujer de 62 años, ingresada por síntomas constitucionales con hipocaliemia severa de difícil corrección e hipercortisolismo severo.

Abstract

Study objectives The marginalisation of undocumented migrants raises concerns about equitable access to COVID-19 vaccination. This study aims to describe migrants' hesitancy about the COVID-19 vaccination during the early phase of the vaccination campaign. Setting This multicentric cross-sectional survey was conducted in health facilities providing care to undocumented migrants in the USA, Switzerland, Italy and France in February-May 2021. Participants Eligibility criteria included age >16 years, being of foreign origin and living without valid residency permit in the country of recruitment. A convenience sample of minimum 100 patients per study site was targeted. Primary and secondary outcome measures Data were collected using an anonymous structured questionnaire. The main outcomes were perceived access to the local COVID-19 vaccination programme and demand for vaccination. Results Altogether, 812 undocumented migrants participated (54.3% Geneva, 17.5% Baltimore, 15.5% Milano and 12.7% Paris). Most (60.9%) were women. The median age was 39 years (interquartile range 1). Participants originated from the Americas (55.9%), Africa (12.7%), Western Pacific (11.2%) Eastern Mediterranean (7.9%), Europe (7.6%) and South-East Asia (4.7%). Overall, 14.1% and 26.2% of participants, respectively, reported prior COVID-19 infection and fear of developing severe COVID-19 infection. Risk factors for severe infection were frequently reported (29.5%). Self-perceived accessibility of COVID-19 vaccination was high (86.4%), yet demand was low (41.1%) correlating with age, comorbidity and views on vaccination which were better for vaccination in general (77.3%) than vaccination against COVID-19 (56.5%). Participants mainly searched for information about vaccination in the traditional and social media. Abstract

Essential oil applications that act as antimicrobial agents are frequently studied for their ability to protect foods against pathogenic microorganisms. The antibacterial activity was determined by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the essential oils of Minthostachys mollis Griseb. “muña” and Piper carpunya Ruíz & Pav. “pinku”. The “muña” collected from the district of San José de Lourdes-Cajamarca; and the “pinku”, from the Camporredondo-Amazonas district. Essential oils were obtained by steam distillation from the leaves; being the density of M. mollis 0.886 and P. carpunya 1.023; Using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (CG-MS), 24 compounds were identified in “muña”, the highest percentage being pulegone (40.94%), menthone (32.72%) and limonene (1.92%); and in “pinku”, 22 compounds, with the highest percentage being methyleugenol (40.49%), safrole (31.24%) and isohomogenol (7.5%). Each essential oil challenged microorganisms of interest in food hygiene: gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. The essential oils of M. mollis and P. carpunya exhibited a broad spectrum of antibacterial action for both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, with a MIC, in M. mollis, for S. aureus 8.86 µg/ml and E. coli 70.88 µg/ml and in P. carpunya, for S. aureus 5.12 µg/ml and E. coli 20.46 µg/ml. It is concluded that the essential oils used in this study, in low concentrations, have antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus bacteria., Las aplicaciones de aceites esenciales que actúan como agentes antimicrobianos se estudian con frecuenciaLas aplicaciones de aceites esenciales que actúan como agentes antimicrobianos se estudian con frecuencia por su capacidad para proteger alimentos contra microorganismos patógenos. Se determinó la actividad antibacteriana mediante la concentración mínima inhibitoria (CMI), de los aceites esenciales de Minthostachys mollis Griseb. “muña” y Piper carpunya Ruíz & Pav. “pinku”. La “muña” colectada del distrito de San José de Lourdes-Cajamarca; y el “pinku”, del distrito de Camporredondo-Amazonas. Los aceites esenciales se obtuvieron por destilación por arrastre de vapor a partir de las hojas; siendo la densidad de M. mollis 0,886 y de P. carpunya 1,023; mediante cromatografía de gases acoplada a espectrometría de masas (CG-MS) se identificaron en “muña” 24 compuestos, siendo los de mayor porcentaje pulegona (40,94%), mentona (32,72%) y limoneno (1,92%); y en “pinku”, 22 compuestos, siendo los de mayor porcentaje el metileugenol (40,49%), safrol (31,24%) e isohomogenol (7,5%). Cada aceite esencial se enfrentaron a microorganismos de interés en la higiene alimentaria: bacterias gram negativas como Escherichia coli y Pseudomonas aeruginosa, y las bacterias gram positivas como Staphylococcus aureus y Enterococcus faecalis. Los aceites esenciales de M. mollis y P. carpunya exhibieron un amplio espectro de acción antibacteriana tanto para bacterias gram positivas como gram negativas, con una CMI, en M. mollis, para S. aureus 8,86 µg /ml y E. coli 70,88 µg /ml y en P. carpunya, para S. aureus 5,12 µg /ml y E. coli 20,46 µg/ml. Se concluye que los aceites esenciales utilizados en este estudio, en bajas concentraciones, poseen actividad antibacteriana contra las bacterias E. coli y S. aureus.

Abstract

This article presents the most important developments in the recognition process of foreign medical degrees in Costa Rica over the past fifteen years. Most applicants received their medical degrees in Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Mexico. By far the most numerous group completed their studies in Cuba, followed by graduates from Venezuelan and Nicaraguan universities, the number of which has increased in the last five years. The pass rate of the written examination used in the recognition process is 23.9% with relatively large fluctuations between graduates of the individual countries, especially between the countries with the lowest numbers of graduates. The main goal of the recognition process is to ensure that graduates from different study conditions and curricula as well as from diverging areas of specialization of the faculties abroad have competencies and knowledge comparable to those of medical graduates in Costa Rica. The focus is on the safety of the patient, as is the case with state exams in many countries., Der vorliegende Beitrag pr��sentiert die wichtigsten Entwicklungen des Anerkennungsprozesses der im Ausland erworbenen medizinischen Abschl��sse der letzten f��nfzehn Jahre in Costa Rica. Die meisten Bewerber haben ihren Medizin-Abschluss in Kuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua und Mexiko erworben. Die mit Abstand zahlreichste Gruppe hat ihr Studium in Kuba absolviert gefolgt von Absolventen von venezolanischen und nikaraguanischen Universit��ten, deren Anzahl in den letzten f��nf Jahren zugenommen hat. Die Bestehensquote der im Rahmen des Anerkennungsprozesses angewandten schriftlichen Pr��fung betr��gt 23,9% mit relativ gro��en Schwankungen zwischen Absolventen der einzelnen L��nder, besonders denjenigen mit den geringsten Anzahlen Absolventen. Das Hauptziel des Anerkennungsprozesses ist es zu gew��hrleisten, dass Absolventen aus verschiedenen Studienbedingungen und Curricula sowie aus divergierenden Schwerpunkten der Fakult��ten im Ausland vergleichbare Kompetenzen und Kenntnisse aufweisen, die mit jenen der in Costa Rica graduierten Medizinern vergleichbar sind. Im Vordergrund steht dabei die Sicherheit der Patienten, wie es auch bei Staatsexamina in vielen L��ndern der Fall ist.

98. Los significados de apropiación pedagógica de TIC para profesores formadores de docentes

Abstract

El artículo resume la investigación realizada sobre los significados de la apropiación pedagógica de las tecnologías de información y comunicación (TIC), para una muestra representativa de profesores formadores de docentes de la Universidad Pedagógica Experimental Libertador, Instituto Pedagógico de Caracas (UPEL-IPC), desde el abordaje de la problemática de las demandas de incorporación de TIC en su labor educadora. Se articula la epistemología fenomenológica hermenéutica de Heidegger, con una ruta metodológica cualitativa de la investigación, fundamentada en los postulados de este filósofo, a partir de la metáfora de un viaje a la comprensión del fenómeno de la apropiación de TIC y su incidencia en el ser profesional docente. La interpretación de los significados de apropiación pedagógica de TIC para profesores formadores de docentes de la UPEL-IPC, devela fases en el tránsito de uso, adopción y apropiación de estas tecnologías, vinculadas con el preguntar por el sentido del ser docente en el siglo XXI. ABSTRACT The research presents the meanings of the pedagogical appropriation of information and communication technologies (ICT), for a representative sample of teacher-training professors of the Libertador Experimental Pedagogical University, Caracas Pedagogical Institute (UPEL-IPC), from the approach to the problem of incorporation of ICT by teachers in their educational work. Heidegger's phenomenological phenomenological epistemology is articulated, with a qualitative methodological path of research based on the postulates of this philosopher, based on the metaphor of a trip to the understanding of the phenomenon of the appropriation of ICT and its impact on the professional being teacher. The interpretation of the meanings of ICT pedagogical appropriation for teacher-training teachers of the UPEL-IPC, reveals phases in the transit of use, adoption and appropriation of these technologies, linked to asking about the meaning of being a teacher in the 21st century. RÉSUMÉ La recherche présente les significations de l'appropriation pédagogique des technologies de l'information et de la communication (TIC), pour un échantillon représentatif de professeurs de formation des enseignants de l'Université pédagogique expérimentale Libertador, Institut pédagogique de Caracas (UPEL-IPC), de l'approche au problème de l'incorporation des TIC par les enseignants dans leur travail éducatif. L'épistémologie phénoménologique de Heidegger s'articule, avec un parcours méthodologique qualitatif de recherche basé sur les postulats de ce philosophe, de la métaphore d'un voyage à la compréhension du phénomène d'appropriation des TIC et de son incidence dans Être un enseignant professionnel. L'interprétation des significations de l'appropriation pédagogique des TIC pour les enseignants-formateurs de l'UPEL-IPC, révèle des phases de transit d'utilisation, d'adoption et d'appropriation de ces technologies, liées à une interrogation sur le sens d'être enseignant au 21e siècle.
