The notion of the Haagerup approximation property, originally introduced for von Neumann algebras equipped with a faithful normal tracial state, is generalized to arbitrary von Neumann algebras. We discuss two equivalent characterisations, one in terms of the standard form and the other in terms of the approximating maps with respect to a fixed faithful normal semifinite weight. We introduce a natural generalization of the Haagerup property of a finite von Neumann algebra to an arbitrary von Neumann algebra (with a separable predual) equipped with a normal, semi-finite, faithful weight and prove that this property does not depend on the choice of the weight. In particular this defines the Haagerup property as an intrinsic invariant of the von Neumann algebra. We also show that such a generalized Haagerup property is preserved under taking crossed products by actions of amenable locally compact groups. Our results are motivated by recent examples from the theory of discrete quantum groups, where the Haagerup property appears a priori only with respect to the Haar state., Comment: To appear in IMRN

A partial Hadamard matrix is a matrix $H\in M_{M\times N}(\mathbb T)$ whose rows are pairwise orthogonal. We associate to each such $H$ a certain quantum semigroup $G$ of quantum partial permutations of $\{1,...,M\}$ and study the correspondence $H\to G$. We discuss as well the relation between the completion problems for a given partial Hadamard matrix and completion problems for the associated submagic matrix $P\in M_M(M_N(\mathbb C))$, in both cases introducing certain criteria for the existence of the suitable completions., Comment: 15 pages; v2 adds more details of the arguments and updates the references. The quantum symmetry group of the inductive limit of C*-algebras equipped with orthogonal filtrations is shown to be the projective limit of the quantum symmetry groups of the C*-algebras appearing in the sequence. Some explicit examples of such projective limits are studied, including the case of quantum symmetry groups of the duals of finite symmetric groups, which do not fit directly into the framework of the main theorem and require further specific study. The investigations reveal a deep connection between quantum symmetry groups of discrete group duals and the doubling construction for Hopf algebras., Comment: 19 pages

The Haagerup property for locally compact groups is generalised to the context of locally compact quantum groups, with several equivalent characterisations in terms of the unitary representations and positive-definite functions established. In particular it is shown that a locally compact quantum group G has the Haagerup property if and only if its mixing representations are dense in the space of all unitary representations. For discrete G we characterise the Haagerup property by the existence of a symmetric proper conditionally negative functional on the dual quantum group $\hat{G}$; by the existence of a real proper cocycle on G, and further, if G is also unimodular we show that the Haagerup property is a von Neumann property of G. This extends results of Akemann, Walter, Bekka, Cherix, Valette, and Jolissaint to the quantum setting and provides a connection to the recent work of Brannan. A general form of contractive idempotent functionals on coamenable locally compact quantum groups is obtained, generalising the result of Greenleaf on contractive measures on locally compact groups. The image of a convolution operator associated to a contractive idempotent is shown to be a ternary ring of operators. As a consequence a one-to-one correspondence between contractive idempotents and a certain class of ternary rings of operators is established., Comment: 16 pages, v2 contains very minor changes and updates the references. It is shown that if T is a ternary ring of operators (TRO), X is a nondegenerate sub-TRO of T and there exists a contractive idempotent surjective map P:T-->X, then P has a unique, explicitly described extension to a conditional expectation between the associated linking algebras. We investigate the fundamental concept of a closed quantum subgroup of a locally compact quantum group. Two definitions - one due to S.Vaes and one due to S.L.Woronowicz - are analyzed and relations between them discussed. Among many reformulations we prove that the former definition can be phrased in terms of quasi-equivalence of representations of quantum groups while the latter can be related to an old definition of Podle\'s from the theory of compact quantum groups. The cases of classical groups, duals of classical groups, compact and discrete quantum groups are singled out and equivalence of the two definitions is proved in the relevant context. A deep relationship with the quantum group generalization of Herz restriction theorem from classical harmonic analysis is also established, in particular, in the course of our analysis we give a new proof of Herz restriction theorem., Comment: 24 pages, v3 adds another reference. We develop fully noncommutative Feynman-Kac formulae by employing quantum stochastic processes. To this end we establish some theory for perturbing quantum stochastic flows on von Neumann algebras by multiplier cocycles. Multiplier cocycles are constructed via quantum stochastic differential equations whose coefficients are driven by the flow. The resulting class of cocycles is characterised under alternative assumptions of separability or Markov regularity. Our results generalise those obtained using classical Brownian motion on the one hand, and results for unitarily implemented flows on the other., Comment: 27 pages. Minor corrections to version 2. We find an analytic formulation of the notion of Hopf image, in terms of the associated idempotent state. More precisely, if $\pi:A\to M_n(\mathbb C)$ is a finite dimensional representation of a Hopf $C^*$-algebra, we prove that the idempotent state associated to its Hopf image $A'$ must be the convolution Ces\`aro limit of the linear functional $\phi=tr\circ\pi$. A natural scheme is established for the approximation of quantum Levy processes on locally compact quantum groups by quantum random walks. Given a quantum subgroup $G\subset U_n$ and a number $k\leq n$ we can form the homogeneous space $X=G/(G\cap U_k)$, and it follows from the Stone-Weierstrass theorem that $C(X)$ is the algebra generated by the last $n-k$ rows of coordinates on $G$. In the quantum group case the analogue of this basic result doesn't necessarily hold, and we discuss here its validity, notably with a complete answer in the group dual case. We focus then on the "easy quantum group" case, with the construction and study of several algebras associated to the noncommutative spaces of type $X=G/(G\cap U_k^+)$., Comment: 24 pages

Motivated by the work of Goswami on quantum isometry groups of noncommutative manifolds we define the quantum symmetry group of a unital C*-algebra A equipped with an orthogonal filtration as the universal object in the category of compact quantum groups acting on A in a filtration preserving fashion. The existence of such a universal object is proved and several examples discussed. In particular we study the universal quantum group acting on the dual of the free group and preserving both the word length and the block length., Comment: 31 pages, v2 corrects a few minor points and updates the list of references. The external Kasparov product is used to construct odd and even spectral triples on crossed products of $C^*$-algebras by actions of discrete groups which are equicontinuous in a natural sense. When the group in question is $\Z$ this gives another viewpoint on the spectral triples introduced by Belissard, Marcolli and Reihani. We investigate the properties of this construction and apply it to produce spectral triples on the Bunce-Deddens algebra arising from the odometer action on the Cantor set and some other crossed products of AF-algebras., Comment: 22 pages (v4 corrects a mistake in the discussion of the equicontinuity condition and modifies the terminology used). Idempotent states on a unimodular coamenable locally compact quantum group A are shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with right invariant expected C*-subalgebras of A. Haar idempotents, that is, idempotent states arising as Haar states on compact quantum subgroups of A, are characterised and shown to be invariant under the natural action of the modular element. This leads to the one-to-one correspondence between Haar idempotents on A and right invariant symmetric expected C*-subalgebras of A without the unimodularity assumption. Finally the tools developed in the first part of the paper are applied to show that the coproduct of a coamenable locally compact quantum group restricts to a continuous coaction on each right invariant expected C*-subalgebra., Comment: 23 pages, v2 adds a discussion of the coamenability of some examples of locally compact quantum groups and corrects a few minor points. Existence and uniqueness theorems for quantum stochastic differential equations with nontrivial initial conditions are proved for coefficients with completely bounded columns. Applications are given for the case of finite-dimensional initial space or, more generally, for coefficients satisfying a finite localisability condition. Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for a conjugate pair of quantum stochastic cocycles on a finite-dimensional operator space to strongly satisfy such a quantum stochastic differential equation. This gives an alternative approach to quantum stochastic convolution cocycles on a coalgebra., Comment: 20 pages

The paper is concerned with the extension of the classical study of probability measures on a compact group which are square roots of the Haar measure, due to Diaconis and Shahshahani, to the context of compact quantum groups. We provide a simple characterisation for compact quantum groups which admit no non-trivial square roots of the Haar state in terms of their corepresentation theory. In particular it is shown that such compact quantum groups are necessarily of Kac type and their subalgebras generated by the coefficients of a fixed two-dimensional irreducible corepresentation are isomorphic (as finite quantum groups) to the algebra of functions on the group of unit quaternions. An example of a quantum group whose Haar state admits no nontrivial square root and which is neither commutative nor cocommutative is given., Comment: 23 pages, v2 simplifies the constructions of examples in Section 6 and corrects some typos. We study the quantum isometry groups of the noncommutative Riemannian manifolds associated to discrete group duals. The basic representation theory problem is to compute the law of the main character of the relevant quantum group, and our main result here is as follows: for the group Z_s^{*n}, with s>4 and n>1, half of the character follows the compound free Poisson law with respect to the measure $\underline{\epsilon}$/2, where $\epsilon$ is the uniform measure on the s-th roots of unity, and $\epsilon\to\underline{\epsilon}$ is the canonical projection map from complex to real measures. We discuss as well a number of technical versions of this result, notably with the construction of a new quantum group, which appears as a "representation-theoretic limit", at s equal to infinity., Comment: 23 pages, in v2 some proofs are modified and expanded (notably that of Theorem 3.5), a few illustrations of the operations related to the considered categories of partitions added and some typos corrected. We introduce and study natural two-parameter families of quantum groups motivated on one hand by the liberations of classical orthogonal groups and on the other by quantum isometry groups of the duals of the free groups. Specifically, for each pair (p,q) of non-negative integers we define and investigate quantum groups O^+(p,q), B^+(p,q), S^+(p,q) and H^+(p,q) corresponding to, respectively, orthogonal groups, bistochastic groups, symmetric groups and hyperoctahedral groups. In the first three cases the new quantum groups turn out to be related to the (dual free products of) free quantum groups studied earlier. For H^+(p,q) the situation is different: we show that H^+(p,0) is isomorphic to the quantum isometry group of the C*-algebra of the free group and it can be viewed as a liberation of the classical isometry group of the p-dimensional torus., Comment: 29 pages

Let G be a finitely generated discrete group. The standard spectral triple on the group C*-algebra C*(G) is shown to admit the quantum group of orientation preserving isometries. This leads to new examples of compact quantum groups. In particular the quantum isometry group of the C*-algebra of the free group on n-generators is computed and turns out to be a quantum group extension of the quantum permutation group A_{2n} of Wang. The quantum groups of orientation and real structure preserving isometries are also considered and construction of the Laplacian for the standard spectral triple on C*(G) discussed., Comment: 23 pages, v2 corrects a few misprints and adds more explanatory remarks. A study of noncommutative topological entropy of gauge invariant endomorphisms of Cuntz algebras began in our earlier work with Joachim Zacharias is continued and extended to endomorphisms which are not necessarily of permutation type. In particular it is shown that if H is an N-dimensional Hilbert space, V is an irreducible multiplicative unitary on the tensor product of H with itself and F is the tensor flip, then the Voiculescu entropy of the Longo's canonical endomorphism associated with the unitary VF is equal to log N., Comment: 8 pages

The problem of existence of standard (i.e. product-type) invariant MASAs for endomorphisms of the Cuntz algebra O_n is studied. In particular endomorphisms which preserve the canonical diagonal MASA D_n are investigated. Conditions on a unitary in O_n equivalent to the fact that the corresponding endomorphism preserves D_n are found, and it is shown that they may be satisfied by unitaries which do not normalize D_n. Unitaries giving rise to endomorphisms which leave all standard MASAs invariant and have identical actions on them are characterized. Finally some properties of examples of finite-index endomorphisms of O_n given by Izumi and related to sector theory are discussed and it is shown that they lead to an endomorphism of O_2 associated to a matrix unitary which does not preserve any standard MASA., Comment: 22 pages

We show that idempotent states on finite quantum groups correspond to pre-subgroups in the sense of Baaj, Blanchard, and Skandalis. It follows that the lattices formed by the idempotent states on a finite quantum group and by its coidalgebras are isomorphic. We show furthermore that these lattices are also isomorphic for compact quantum groups, if one restricts to expected coidalgebras., Comment: 9 pages

Every Markov-regular quantum Levy process on a multiplier C*-bialgebra is shown to be equivalent to one governed by a quantum stochastic differential equation, and the generating functionals of norm-continuous convolution semigroups on a multiplier C*-bialgebra are then completely characterised. These results are achieved by extending the theory of quantum Levy processes on a compact quantum group, and more generally quantum stochastic convolution cocycles on a C*-bialgebra, to locally compact quantum groups and multiplier C*-bialgebras. Strict extension results obtained by Kustermans, together with automatic strictness properties developed here, are exploited to obtain existence and uniqueness for coalgebraic quantum stochastic differential equations in this setting. Then, working in the universal enveloping von Neumann bialgebra, we characterise the stochastic generators of Markov-regular, *-homomorphic (respectively completely positive and contractive), quantum stochastic convolution cocycles., Comment: 20 pages; v2 corrects some typos and no longer contains a section on quantum random walk approximations, which will now appear as a separate submission. Convolution semigroups of states on a quantum group form the natural noncommutative analogue of convolution semigroups of probability measures on a locally compact group. Here we initiate a theory of weakly continuous convolution semigroups of functionals on a C*-bialgebra, the noncommutative counterpart of locally compact semigroup. On locally compact quantum groups we obtain a bijective correspondence between such convolution semigroups and a class of C_0-semigroups of maps which we characterise. On C*-bialgebras of discrete type we show that all weakly continuous convolution semigroups of states are automatically norm-continuous. As an application we deduce a known characterisation of continuous conditionally positive-definite Hermitian functions on a compact group., Comment: 15 pages; accepted for publication in Mathematische Zeitschrift. v2 contains several minor corrections, main theorems remain unchanged

Unlike for locally compact groups, idempotent states on locally compact quantum groups do not necessarily arise as Haar states of compact quantum subgroups. We give a simple characterisation of those idempotent states on compact quantum groups which do arise as Haar states on quantum subgroups. We also show that all idempotent states on the quantum groups U_q(2), SU_q(2), and SO_q(3) (q in (-1,0) \cup (0,1]) arise in this manner and list the idempotent states on the compact quantum semigroups U_0(2), SU_0(2), and SO_0(3). Let E be a product system of C*-correspondences over N^r. Some sufficient conditions for the existence of a not necessarily regular isometric dilation of a completely contractive representation of E are established and difference between regular and *-regular dilations discussed. It is in particular shown that a minimal isometric dilation is *-regular if and only if it is doubly commuting. Idempotent states on a compact quantum group are shown to yield group-like projections in the multiplier algebra of the dual discrete quantum group. This allows to deduce that every idempotent state on a finite quantum group arises in a canonical way as the Haar state on a finite quantum hypergroup. Quantum isometry groups of spectral triples associated with approximately finite-dimensional C*-algebras are shown to arise as inductive limits of quantum symmetry groups of corresponding truncated Bratteli diagrams. This is used to determine explicitly the quantum isometry group of the natural spectral triple on the algebra of continuous functions on the middlethird Cantor set. It is also shown that the quantum symmetry groups of finite graphs or metric spaces coincide with the quantum isometry groups of the corresponding classical objects equipped with natural Laplacians., Comment: typos corrected, To appear in Trans.AMS

We construct explicit approximating nets for crossed products of C*-algebras by actions of discrete quantum groups. This implies that C*-algebraic approximation properties such as nuclearity, exactness or completely bounded approximation property are preserved by taking crossed products by actions of amenable discrete quantum groups. We also show that the noncommutative topological entropy of a transformation commuting with the quantum group action does not change when we pass to the canonical extension to the crossed product. Noncommutative topological entropy estimates are obtained for polynomial gauge invariant endomorphisms of Cuntz algebras, generalising known results for the canonical shift endomorphisms. Higher-rank graph generalisations of the Popescu-Poisson transform are constructed, allowing us to develop a dilation theory for higher rank operator tuples. These dilations are joint dilations of the families of operators satisfying relations encoded by the graph structure which we call $\Lambda$-contractions or $\Lambda$-coisometries. Besides commutant lifting results and characterisations of pure states on higher rank graph algebras several applications to the structure theory of non-selfadjoint graph operator algebras are presented generalising recent results in special cases., Comment: 25 pages; v3 corrects a definition of a doubly commuting $\Lambda$-contraction and adds a reference. Higher-rank versions of Wold decomposition are shown to hold for doubly commuting isometric representations of product systems of C*-correspondences over N^k, generalising the classical result for a doubly commuting pair of isometries due to M.Slocinski. Certain decompositions are also obtained for the general, not necessarily doubly commuting, case and several corollaries and examples are provided. Schuermann's theory of quantum Levy processes, and more generally the theory of quantum stochastic convolution cocycles, is extended to the topological context of compact quantum groups and operator space coalgebras. Quantum stochastic convolution cocycles on a C*-hyperbialgebra, which are Markov-regular, completely positive and contractive, are shown to satisfy coalgebraic quantum stochastic differential equations with completely bounded coefficients, and the structure of their stochastic generators is obtained. Automatic complete boundedness of a class of derivations is established, leading to a characterisation of the stochastic generators of *-homomorphic convolution cocycles on a C*-bialgebra. Two tentative definitions of quantum Levy process on a compact quantum group are given and, with respect to both of these, it is shown that an equivalent process on Fock space may be reconstructed from the generator of the quantum Levy process. A concept of quantum stochastic convolution cocycle is introduced and studied in two different contexts -- purely algebraic and operator space theoretic. A quantum stochastic convolution cocycle is a quantum stochastic process on a coalgebra satisfying the convolution cocycle relation and the initial condition given by the counit. The notion generalises that of quantum Levy process, which in turn is a noncommutative probability counterpart of classical Levy process on a group. Convolution cocycles arise as solutions of quantum stochastic differential equations. In turn every sufficiently regular cocycle satisfies an equation of that type. This is proved along with the corresponding existence and uniqueness of solutions for coalgebraic quantum stochastic differential equations. The stochastic generators of unital *-homomorphic cocycles are characterised in terms of structure maps on a *-bialgebra. This yields a simple proof of the Schurmann Reconstruction Theorem for a quantum Levy process; it also yields a topological version for a quantum Levy process on a C*-bialgebra. Precise characterisation of the stochastic generators of completely positive and contractive quantum stochastic convolution cocycles in the C*-algebraic context is given, leading to some dilation results. Let X be a Hilbert bimodule over a C*-algebra A and $O_X= A \rtimes_X \Z$. Using a finite section method we construct a sequence of completely positive contractions factoring through matrix algebras over A which act on $s_{\xi} s_{\eta}^*$ as Schur multipliers converging to the identity. This shows immediately that for a finitely generated X the algebra $O_X$ inherits any standard approximation property such as nuclearity, exactness, CBAP or OAP from A. We generalise this to certain general Pimsner algebras by proving semi-splitness of the Toeplitz extension under certain conditions and discuss some examples., Comment: 11 pages, v2 has a modified title, abstract and introduction. In the first part of the paper the natural scheme for proving noncommutative individual ergodic theorems for multiple sequences is described and applied to obtain results on unrestricted convergence of multiaverages. In the second part convergence of ergodic averages induced by several maps satisfying specific recurrence relations, including so-called Multi Free Group Partial Sums, is proved. Let O_{Lambda} be a higher rank graph C*-algebra of rank r. For every tuple p of non-negative integers there is a canonical completely positive map Phi^p on O_{Lambda} and a subshift T^p on the path space X of the graph. We show that ht(Phi^p)=h(T^p), where ht is Voiculescu's approximation entropy and h the classical topological entropy.
