Sulfur-containing spice compounds possess diverse biological functions and play an important role in food, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture. The development of functional spices has become increasingly popular, especially for medicinal functions for dietary health. Thus, this review focuses on the properties and functions of sulfur-containing spice compounds, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiobesity, anticancer, antibacterial, and insecticidal functions, among others. Developments over the last five years concerning the properties of sulfur-containing spice compounds are summarized and discussed.

The protective effectiveness of oil compositions in the presence of sulfur dioxide was studied. The moisture permeability of oil films and the corrosion rate of steels both protected and unprotected by oil films increase with increasing relative humidity and initial sulfur dioxide concentration in the atmosphere. The contribution of individual components to the protective effect of a film of synthetic Mobil-1 oil inhibited by the additive Emulgin in the presence of sulfur dioxide is considered. The total protective effectiveness of the system can reach 93-96% after one day in 0.5 M sodium chloride solution containing sulfur dioxide and the products of its interaction with water. The slowdown of steel corrosion under a layer of inhibited and non-inhibited oil film is mainly due to retardation of the cathodic process with slight inhibition of the anodic reaction.

Three novel flexible sulfur-containing MOF materials named Co-URJC-5, Cu-URJC-6 and Zn-URJC-7, based on the 5,5′-thiodiisophthalic acid linker have been synthesized through solvothermal methods and characterized by different physicochemical techniques. Hydrogen adsorption analysis at room temperature reveals that these compounds display a gate-opening type adsorption mechanism at low pressures, attributed to the flexible nature of the H4TBTC ligand. This behavior is even more noticeable for Cu-URJC-6, since the layer arrangement by π-πstacking interactions between the aromatic layers could contribute to the flexibility of the structure. The synthesis of sulfur heterocycles via the construction of C–S bonds has received considerable attention due to their biological value and extensive pharmaceutical application. While diverse sulfurating agents have been developed over the past few decades, in this regard, elemental sulfur, with advantages of low toxicity, odorless nature and chemical stability, has great potential for the construction of diverse sulfur heterocycles through its direct incorporation into the target molecules in a concise way. Direct functionalization of inert C–H bonds can shorten the number of reaction steps and minimize the amount of waste formed. Hence, heteroannulations via direct C–H sulfuration is considered to be an attractive strategy for the synthesis of sulfur heterocycles. In the last few years, a vast array of concise systems have been reported for the synthesis of some valuable sulfur heterocycles such as thiophenes, thienoindoles, thienothiazoles, thiazoles, benzothiazoles, and thiadiazoles through direct C–H sulfuration/annulations with elemental sulfur. In this study, the evolution characteristics of sulfur-containing gases during thermal conversion of two coals under different atmospheres were studied through temperature-program decomposition (TPD) and rapid-heating decomposition (RHD) coupled with online mass spectrum (MS). The releasing profiles of H2, CH4 and CO were also measured. Results showed that the effect of atmosphere and heating rate on evolution of sulfur-containing gases was very significant. It was found that Ar atmosphere was more favorable to the formation of sulfur-containing gases than CO2 atmosphere by using TPD-MS. In CO2, the formation of H2S and SO2 was restrained in 260–650 °C, but was promoted in 880–980 °C; the formation of COS was promoted during the whole process. In Ar, high releasing intensity of H2 and CH4 could stabilize sulfur-containing radicals which led to high amount of H2S and SO2; while high releasing intensity of CO in CO2 resulted in high amount of COS. By using RHD-MS, it was found that the steam atmosphere was highly favorable for the transformation of H2S, SO2 and COS during the entire reaction period. However, the CO2 atmosphere was disadvantageous to the transformation of H2S, SO2 and COS at the initial stage, but slight favorable for the transformation of H2S, SO2 and COS during the later stage. These was resulted from the gasification reaction of steam/CO2 with coal. The key factor was the releasing amount of H2 and CO, which promoted the formation and transformation of H2S, SO2 and COS.

This review compiles and summarizes approaches to the preparation of heterocyclic systems containing sulfur atoms based on the reactions of disulfur dichloride which acts as an electrophilic reagent. It is shown that as a result of these transformations heterocycles with different numbers of sulfur atoms can be synthesized: 1,2,5-thiadiazoles, 1,2- and 1,4-thiazines, 1,2-dithiols, 1,2,3-dithiazoles, 1,2,3,4,5-pentathiepines, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7-heptathiocanes, and many others. The yields of the products of these reactions depend to a significant extent on the ratio of the reactants, the nature of the solvent, the base used, and the temperature. The exceptional role of disulfur dichloride in the synthesis of various sulfur-containing heterocycles is shown.

Background: Sulfur-containing compounds represent an important class of chemical compounds due to their wide range of biological and pharmaceutical properties. Moreover, sulfur-containing compounds may be applied in other fields, such as biological, organic, and materials chemistry. Several studies on the activities of sulfur compounds have already proven their anti-inflammatory properties and use to treat diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and HIV. Moreover, examples of sulfur-containing compounds include dapsone, quetiapine, penicillin, probucol, and nelfinavir, which are important drugs with known activities. Objective: This review will focus on the synthesis and application of some sulfur-containing compounds used to treat several diseases, as well as promising new drug candidates. Results: Due to the variety of compounds containing C-S bonds, we have reviewed the different synthetic routes used toward the synthesis of sulfur-containing drugs and other compounds.

The research results of mine atmosphere normalization in potash mines are given.The method of mine air purification from toxic gases through ozonation is proposed. The developed technology of using photochemical method of neutralization hydrogen sulfide and methylmercaptan in mine atmosphere is described. Tests of the developed technology of neutralization sulfur compounds are conducted in mines of Upper reaches of the Kama river’s deposit of potassium and magnesium salts and the results are presented in this article. It is found out that installation of high pressure arc mercury lamps AML-400 for ozone generation on mining excavation machines allows to reduce sulfur gases concentration in workspace up to the level of maximum permissible.

A series of novel sulfur-containing cycliclipopeptides named thioamycolamides A-E, with thiazoline, thioether rings, and fatty acid moieties, were identified from the culture broth of the rare actinomycete Amycolatopsis sp. 26-4. The planar structural elucidation was accomplished by HRMS and 1D/2D NMR spectroscopic data analyses. The absolute configurations were unambiguously determined by Marfey's method, CD spectroscopy, and synthesis of partial structures. Moreover, their growth inhibitory activities against human tumor cell lines were investigated.

The physical and chemical properties of "loose" manganese ore of Ulu-Telyak Deposit of the Republic of Bashkortostan for the possibility of its use as an effective sorbent for purification of exhaust gases of metallurgical, chemical, oil refining, mining and other industries are studied. Analyses were carried out on the phase composition, chemical composition, determined the specific surface area of the pores and thermogravimetric method of water content. The process of sorption of a gas mixture containing hydrogen sulfide, methyl and ethyl mercaptans was also studied. The results of the experiments concluded that the prospects of using this "loose" manganese ore for the sorption of sulfur-containing gases.

An analysis was completed in the field to consider the impact of potassium (K) and sulfur (S) on potato for ideal yield, quality, and supplement use effectiveness. Medicines included four degrees of potassium (0, 100, 200 and 300 kg K ha-1) and five degrees of sulfur (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg S ha-1) in Split plot configuration having three replications in Kanipanka investigate station, Sulaimani Governorate, Iraqi Kurdistan district under inundated condition. The potassium and sulfur collaboration effectsly affected vegetative development. Leaf territory, No. of stem and secured territory per plant indicated a critical effect of potassium and sulfur application. There was noteworthy negative communication among potassium and sulfur. The all out tuber yield expanded on a normal by 17.5 and 37.63 percent at 200 kg K ha-1 and 300 kg K ha-1, individually, when contrasted with no potassium application. Naphtho[2,3b]thiophene is a linear sulfur containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. Naphtho[2,3b]thiophene and its derivatives are commonly accessed by a Bradsher cyclization. Synthesis of the Bradsher cyclization substrate typically requires harsh conditions, including several oxidation state changes. Here we report an improved, multigram synthesis of 3-bromonaphtho[2,3b]thiophene, exploiting a copper-catalyzed cross coupling to prepare the Bradsher substrate in 3 steps from commercial materials while minimizing redox reactions. Modification of the naphthothiophene scaffold in the 3-position has not previously been reported. In this work, the 3-bromonaphthothiophene is further functionalized via lithium-halogen exchange, with the key finding being a specific order of addition in lithiation is required to avoid undesired rearrangement reactions. A small yet versatile set of derivatives, including a naphthothiophene-containing chiral amine are prepared.

In order to explore the influence of the release of sulfur-containing gases in the process of sludge pyrolysis, temperature, time and calcium-based conditioner were selected to conduct low-temperature sludge pyrolysis experiment on sludge, and effective measures to control the release of sulfur-containing gases such as CS2, H2S and SO2 were proposed. The experimental results show that when the temperature is below 200℃, the release of H2S gas is less than 50 µg/g. The release amounts of C2S and H2S within 3min were 20.84µg/g and 339.42µg/g, respectively. Combined with the release characteristics of the three gases, it was concluded that the drying temperature of the sludge was controlled below 250℃ and the drying time was controlled within 1 min. The concentration of sulfur-containing gas is 59.81 mg/m3, 94% lower than that of dry pure sludge gas when the addition of calcium base powder is 20% of the original sludge mass fraction. After absorption of calcium base powder, there are almost no organic compounds containing sulfur and sulfur gas. The research results provide a direction for the selection of pyrolysis sludge treatment process, which is beneficial to control the discharge of harmful gases.

A Ni-catalyzed intramolecular reaction of diarylthioether-tethered 1,8-diynes gave sulfur-containing tetracyclic compounds at ambient temperature. The transformation was initiated by non-activated sp2 C-S bond cleavage along with consecutive alkyne insertions. A double intramolecular reaction of a tetrayne and an intermolecular reaction of monoynes were also available, and the corresponding polycyclic compounds were obtained. Moreover, the obtained cycloadduct showed photo-catalytic activity in benzylic oxidation.

A formal CH2 -CH2 homologation conducted with C1 carbenoids on a carbon electrophile for the obtainment of a four-membered cycle is reported. The logic proposes the consecutive delivery of two single nucleophilic CH2 units to an isothiocyanate-as competent electrophilic partner-resulting in the assembling of a rare imino-thietane cluster. The single synthetic operation procedure documents genuine chemocontrol, as indicated by the tolerance to various reactive elements decorating the starting materials. Significantly, the double homologation protocol is accomplished directly on a carbon electrophile, thus not requiring the installation of heteroatom-centered manifolds (e.g. boron).

Environmental remediation concerns about pollution and contamination removal from environmental media, such as soil, air, or surface water. Enormous efforts have been applied in metal removal from surface water. In this study, four novel heteroaromatic sulfur-containing polyamides 6a-d carry both types of aliphatic and aromatic species in their polymer backbones as selective adsorbents for Hg+2 metal ion from aqueous solution have been synthesized in considerable amounts. The polycondensation method at low temperature is used as a simple and low coast polymerization technique. This occurred by the interaction of the thiophene-based monomer 5 with different diacid chlorides of both types. Beforehand the polymerization, the structures of monomer 5 were confirmed by spectral and elemental analyses. Also, the structures of the new polymers were investigated by both spectral and elemental analysis; besides their solubility, GPC data, XRD diffraction patterns, thermal analysis, and FE-SEM micrographs. The synthesized polymers were freely soluble in polar protic solvents due to the presence of heteroaromatic sulfur functional groups. Furthermore, the analytical competition of the new polymers has been tested using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for its selective extraction across different metal ions. Polymer 6c was the most selective toward Hg+2 and considered as a highly selective adsorbent for Hg+2 environmental remediation among all derivatives and its adsorption detection and efficiency were also investigated. Polymer 6c showed the most effective adsorption quantity on its surface at pH = 1. Moreover, the calculated adsorption isotherm showed a typical isotherm to the Langmuir adsorption type. This showed that the adsorption capacity of polymer 6c for Hg+2 was 47.95 mg g−1. These novel polymers are serving as simple and inexpensive heavy metal ions adsorbent materials from drinking water and wastewater.

With the aim of preparing of sulfur-containing derivatives of cymantrene, the hydrolysis of isothiouronium salts of alkylcymantrenes was studied under various conditions as well as subsequent chemical transformations of hydrolysis products. It was found that alkylcymantrenylthiols can be prepared either by hydrolysis of isothiouronium salts under the action of NaOH in a EtOH-acetone (4 : 1) mixture for 2 h or by the reduction of the corresponding disulfides by LiAlH4 formed in the course of this reaction in good yield for 6 h. Electrochemical properties of disulfides Cym(CHCH3)SS(CHCH3)Cym (Cym = C5H4Mn(CO)3) in solution before and after irradiation with a Hg lamp at λ365 nm were studied. The structures of the compounds were established by the X-ray analysis (CymCH(CH3)SSCH(CH3)Cym (I) (CIF file CCDC no. 1921952) and CymCH2SCH2Cym (II) (CIF file CCDC no. 1921953)).

The review is devoted to modern trends in the chemistry of nitrogen-, oxygen-and sulfur-containing monocyclic, polynuclear and benzo(hetero)annulated heterocyclic compounds. Methods for the synthesis and chemical reactivity of furazan, furoxan, thiazole, thiadiazole, dithiazole, thiophene, glycoluril, imidazotriazine, diaziridine and other heterocycles are discussed. Characteristic features of reactions depending on the structure of the starting compounds, intermediates and reaction medium (organic solvents, ionic liquids) and mechanistic aspects of the most interesting transformations are considered. Data on the biological activities and prospects for practical applications of the indicated heterocyclic systems are presented. The bibliography includes 383 references.

The study is devoted to the normalization of the mine atmosphere in potash mines. We propose the technique of neutralizing toxic gases (hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan) in a mine atmosphere, which is based on photochemical method. It allows reducing concentrations of toxic gases to the maximum permissible values. The developed technique of neutralizing sulfur-containing gases can be used in potash mines.

Introduction. In the development and operation of ore deposits, there is a risk of adverse effects from the occurrence of endogenous mine fires (spontaneous combustion of ore), as a result of which there are emissions of significant amounts of harmful and poisonous gas-dust impurities into the atmosphere. This study was conducted in connection with the current unfavorable sanitary and epidemiological situation in the city of Sibay of the Republic of Bashkortostan, due to the decay of sulfur-containing ore of the underground mine. The purpose of the study is to assess the ecological and hygienic situation associated with air pollution by the decay products of the ore rock of the Sibai underground mine. Material and methods. The assessment of the level of air pollution in residential areas of Sibai was carried out on the basis of the analysis of monitoring data of 4 independent laboratories (more than 40000 samples from atmospheric air). Calculations and assessment of public health risk were carried out in accordance with the Guidelines 2.1.10.1920-04. Statistical processing was carried out using the software “Microsoft Excel”. Results. During the period of an intensive decay of the ore rock of the Sibay underground mine in the atmospheric air of some areas of the city, there were found concentrations of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide exceeding hygienic standards (maximum permissible concentration) by 30 or more times and 80 or more times correspondingly. The values of hazard indices in relation to the respiratory system when combined inhalation substances: hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, nitrogen dioxide were ranging from 0,3 (acceptable risk) to 18,4 (high risk). Sulfur dioxide (the hazard ratio to 14.0) and hydrogen sulfide (the hazard ratio to 6.6) made the greatest contribution to the formation of a health risk. Conclusion. There is a high tendency to spontaneous combustion - the emergence of endogenous fires for copper-pyrite deposits represented by pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite. The decay of the ore rock of the Sibay underground mine resulted in air pollution of residential areas with hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide, which contributed to the formation of an increased non-carcinogenic risk to public health.

Acrylamide, a known neurotoxin, reproductive toxin, genotoxin, probable carcinogen, hepatotoxin, and immunotoxin, has sparked intense curiosity due to its prominent presence in thermally processed, carbohydrate-rich foods. Acrylamide formation occurs via the Maillard reaction at temperatures ≥100ºC. Thorough investigations on acrylamide mitigation through the application of sulfur-containing compounds to raw materials, and during food processing have been conducted. Although prominent results in acrylamide reduction have been observed, limitations are considered. These limitations involve the social and economic challenges of a population, such as the Caribbean. This study seeks to answer just how effective the application of sulfur-containing compounds is in reducing acrylamide exposure, especially when this applies to a developing region.
