The purpose of this literature review is to describe intervention research studies in which paraprofessionals received training applicable to student with disabilities. Thirty studies were systematically reviewed to identify (a) characteristics of study participants and settings, (b) characteristics of paraprofessional training and paraprofessional-implemented intervention evaluated within these studies, (c) quality of the studies, and (d) implications for practice and areas for future research. Overall, paraprofessional training and subsequent intervention with students yielded positive outcomes. Training sessions typically were delivered by workshops, lectures, or classes and classroom-based training. However, numerous studies failed to demonstrate characteristics of study quality.

Research supports the benefits of inclusive education for all students, including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Additionally, educators are supportive of the idea of including students with IDD in general education classrooms. However, they report many barriers to doing so, including a lack of a systematic process to plan for successful inclusive experiences. The purpose of this demonstration was to evaluate a universal intervention during teacher-identified routines that were characterized by significant classwide problem behavior. Six Head Start classrooms (seven groups of children, with one classroom divided into two groups) received two workshops and two coaching sessions on universal Positive Behavior Support. Participating teams were taught to use an antecedent-behavior-consequence problem-solving process and to develop and implement action plans addressing prevent-teach-respond (PTR) strategies to improve targeted routines. Following intervention, children's inappropriate behavior decreased to below baseline levels in all six classrooms. Intervention fidelity in all six classrooms averaged 82.6% for the total intervention. Social validity ratings indicated that interventions were feasible for use in their classrooms and had positive effects on students and staff. This program evaluation suggests that, with support, preschool classroom teams can apply assessment-based action plans using PTR strategies to reduce the inappropriate behavior of students during difficult classroom routines.

Following the implementation of Tier 1 and Tier 2 Positive Behavior Support (PBS) strategies in six Head Start (HS) classrooms, three children in two classrooms were identified who had significant behavioral challenges and met the criteria for the use of individualized PBS. The purpose of this demonstration was to evaluate whether the effects of individualized PBS intervention implemented by HS classroom staff would have a generalized effect on inappropriate and appropriate behaviors, defined both individually for each child in a support plan and globally across three children. Following intervention with all three target children, both individually and globally defined inappropriate behavior showed decreases over baseline levels, whereas individually and globally defined appropriate behavior showed increases over baseline levels. Overall fidelity was high for implementation of prevention strategies but varied by child and classroom. Social validity ratings indicated that intervention strategies were feasible for use in classrooms and had positive effects on students and staff.

First, teachers should consider the need for curricular adaptations (i.e., adaptations to what is taught in the general education classroom that prioritize content aligned to state-adopted general education standards and incorporate student's individualized support needs; [11]). Paraeducators assume a range of responsibilities to assist school members in supporting students who receive special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2004). These responsibilities often include supporting the behavioral needs of students with extensive support needs. Given the growing adoption of school-wide positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) as a framework for supporting students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs and increasing reliance on paraeducators among schools in the United States, we conducted an exploratory survey study of 82 paraeducators to explore their involvement and perceived importance of involvement in various PBIS aspects, perceived barriers and facilitators of involvement in PBIS, and their interest in professional development to learn about PBIS. Our findings suggest that, although paraeducators valued involvement in PBIS, their overall level of involvement was low across most aspects. Common barriers included limited training and membership on PBIS teams, and paraeducators viewed in-district workshops and one-on-one coaching and mentoring as the most preferred approaches for learning about PBIS. A survey of pharmacy students indicates that student attitudes roughly parallel those reported for practitioners: that continuing education (CE) is necessary to remain competent. Attitudes--toward participation, toward professional organizations as the source, and toward institutional emphasis on postgraduate degrees versus CE--are reported. The questionnaire is appended. As inclusive opportunities increase for students with disabilities, additional research is needed to examine high school students' classroom interactions. This descriptive study explores the nature of the social interactions of 10 high school students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in the general education classroom. Findings from our observations indicated that students with IDD interacted with peers during approximately one out of every four minutes and interacted with the general educator during one out of every 10 minutes, less than their peer comparisons' interactions with peers and teachers. Students with IDD were present (M = 89.9%) and in proximity to peers (M = 71.7%) during the majority of the class period.
